TROPICAL ADVENTURES Beloved among nature lovers and environmentalists alike in Dubai, The Green Planet’s man-made biodome in City Walk is home to more than 3,000 species of tropical plants and animals including a pair of sloths, twin Tamarin monkeys and colourful parrots. Adding to its ever-growing family, The Green Planet recently welcomed 1,000 piranhas, giving visitors a rare, up-close look at these famously ferocious creatures from South America. So if you’re looking for a tropical escape in the heart of the desert, head indoors for a day well spent exploring nature.  thegreenplanetdubai.com

IN THE FRAME The Dubai Frame, which stands tall at a whopping 150 metres, gives you a fascinating perspective of the city, as a striking blend of the old and the new. Designed by award-winning architect Fernando Donis, the structure features two towers connected by a glass bridge, where you can enjoy 360-degree panoramas of the city. It’s almost like taking a journey through time as you witness historic landmarks in Deira and Bur Dubai on one side and a maze of skyscrapers along Sheikh Zayed Road on the other. There’s also a museum on the ground floor that traces Dubai’s remarkable transformation from a humble fishing village to a modern metropolis.  thedubaiframe.com

When Dubai Opera first opened its doors in the summer of 2016, all eyes were on this new realm of entertainment in the region, with the king of opera, Plácido Domingo himself, gracing the stage. Now, almost three years later, having wrapped up several iconic shows, the venue is gearing up to usher in a new season of entertainment. One of the biggest highlights of 2019 was the three-week limited run of award-winning musical The Phantom of the Opera. And while following in the footsteps of this legendary production is no easy feat, Dubai Opera promises an exciting season celebrating the best of music and theatre. Set to perform later this year is jazz singer Mica Paris followed by iconic productions including La Traviata and The Nutcracker.  dubaiopera.com

IN THE GROOVE Dubai’s first-ever indoor arena recently opened to the public, bringing some of the world’s biggest stars to the emirate. Starting with renowned stand-up comedian Russell Peters as the inaugural act followed by pop music sensation Maroon 5, Coca-Cola Arena in City Walk, Dubai, has, quite literally, set the stage for a unique entertainment experience. Irish boy band Westlife and motivational speaker Tony Robbins also made appearances at the arena. In the months ahead, expect major live music concerts, sporting events and family shows all year round. And with a capacity for 17,000 spectators, it doesn’t get bigger than this!  coca-cola-arena.com

NEW IN TOWN Greek seems to be the f lavour of the season in the emirates. The Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue is now home to a trendy new Greek dining concept that offers the best of the Med in a stunning setting. Straight from London’s Marylebone, Opso has opened its doors to the emirate’s gourmands with an expansive menu featuring a traditional-meets-modern touch – think Greek salad ceviche, smoked cheese croquettes, eggplant and beef mousaka and prawn pasta. Keeping things unique at the venue is a feta bar with baked, creamy and fried feta varieties. Enjoy all of this and more from the expansive terrace overlooking Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Fountain.  054 4244999

CLOSE TO HOME

Oman remains a favoured destination among GCC travellers looking for a quick escape without the hours of flight time. The city of Salalah is especially popular, thanks to its tropical vibes. Escape the desert dunes and head to this verdant oasis in the Gulf, where huge herds of camels grazing alongside cattle and goats are a common sight. While the destination is best enjoyed during the monsoon season from June to August, Salalah’s palm-fringed beaches ooze with tropical flair all year round, making it a must-visit for those seeking a quick recharge.

LOCAL FLAVOUR Long before Dubai became known for its spectacular skyscrapers, it was a tiny fishing village surrounded by vast stretches of dunes. Today, the desert provides the ideal escape from the bustle of the city and offers the chance to experience the natural beauty of Dubai. One of the best ways to explore the sandy expanse is with an authentic desert safari experience. Luxury eco-tour operator Platinum Heritage offers sunrise, sunset and overnight safaris within the pristine Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, giving you the chance to spot native wildlife, participate in a host of cultural activities and also enjoy a sumptuous meal in traditional Bedouin fashion.  platinum-heritage.com

A creative hub

The UAE is home to a host of inspiring spaces designed to serve its cultural scene, offering everything from attractions and film screenings to workshops and more The country’s decision to highlight its rich heritage has led to the creation of several fascinating cultural facilities across the emirates. This means visitors and residents looking to get their art and culture fix have no dearth of venues to explore. Some of the most iconic attractions in the city are built on the foundations of the nation’s history, narrating rare stories of the country’s development from fishing village to modern metropolis through its fascinating exhibits. Also, in recent years, a flourishing creative scene has led to the emergence of several art centres and galleries, and there’s plenty on offer for every type of art buff looking to soak up some inspiration, be it film screenings, unique gallery showcases or edgy art installations and architectural masterpieces.

Q ASR AL WATAN One of the newest cultural attractions to open to the public, Qasr Al Watan, housed within Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace complex, is a working palace that hosts official state visits, summits as well as the council and cabinet meetings. Here, visitors will be able to explore a collection of fascinating exhibits, artefacts and manuscripts that shed light on Emirati governance, the UAE’s vision for the future as well as contributions from the Arab world to various intellectual fields. General and private tours are also available, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the stately structure.  qasralwatan.ae

MANAR AT AL SA ADIYAT Billed as one of the capital’s most loved hubs for art and community events, Manarat Al Saadiyat encompasses Abu Dhabi’s vibrancy and cultural energy. The first artistic venue to open on Saadiyat Island, which now also boasts the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat offers a range of insightful exhibitions, talks and workshops across various venues, including a modern arts and culture centre, several gallery spaces and a theatre. Not only can visitors discover regional and international talent throughout the year, but they can also explore their own creativity through initiatives that have been designed to encourage community participation. A must for art lovers, the Art Studio offers drop-in sessions and classes with topics that range from art and science to figure drawing and printmaking.  manaratalsaadiyat.ae

AL SERK AL AVENUE Al Quoz, previously thought of as something of a Bermuda Triangle among Dubai dwellers, thanks to its maze of indistinct warehouses and similar-looking streets, is now one of the city’s most up-and-coming art quarters. With its backto-basics approach and hip industrial façades, Al Quoz is the perfect spot for Alserkal Avenue’s creative vision. Not only is the district home to a host of emerging and established galleries, Alserkal Avenue has also become synonymous with homegrown cultural initiatives and inventive public spaces, offering a range of commissions, screenings and talks to upcoming talent. The new season will also see theatre productions and workshops for children.  alserkalavenue.ae

CINEMA A KIL Cinema Akil, the UAE’s newest arthouse cinema, has only been in its permanent venue for a few months, but already feels like an institution. A hub for film fans and culture buffs to appreciate the artistry of moviemaking, the setting here elevates the ordinary viewing experience and celebrates the cinematic craft. As yet another hidden gem to be located in Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue, this leading arthouse cinema pays tribute to the art of moviemaking with an intensive programme of events over the coming months, including special screenings throughout the year. Regional and international documentaries and feature films from directors in the US, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon that tackle a range of topics from politics to social issues, are part of the venue’s annual programming.  cinemaakil.com

ABU DHABI CULTUR AL FOUNDATION Al Qattara Arts Centre in Al Ain runs monthly events throughout the year with local artists sharing their unique skills. These workshops offer enthusiasts an opportunity to engage with Emirati artists and immerse themselves in the region’s arts scene. Participants can benefit from sessions that offer insights into painting, drawing, calligraphy and pottery. Younger visits can also enjoy interesting workshops that delve into traditional and modern art techniques. For those looking to soak up the artistic vibe, the redeveloped Al Qattara Fort also houses a brilliant arts centre and gallery with a stunning showcase of iconic creations.  culturalfoundation.ae

GREEK CHIC Traditional meets modern with both cuisine and décor at Gaia in DIFC, serving up the best of the Med

A single visit to Gaia is all it takes to discover why this Greek restaurant rose to prominence on Dubai’s dining scene within a short span of time. Tucked away in the bustling neighbourhood of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the venue has quickly established itself as a popular hangout among Dubai’s chic gourmands. Given that DIFC’s dining scene is packed with restaurants serving up cuisines from all across the globe in a variety of settings, we’ve seen quite a few hits and misses. But Gaia became an instant crowd favourite – no surprises here – thanks to an exceptional menu. You can expect to be wowed every time you visit. And with chef Izu Ani at the helm, who charms with his creative spin on classic Greek cuisine, you know it’s culinary magic waiting to happen. It seems like everything chef Ani touches turns to gold lately. Following the success of Le Petite Maison, La Serre, Carine and The Lighthouse, he set his sights on Gaia, and together with head chef Orestis Kotefas, he conceptualised a menu that champions humble and authentic Greek cuisine that relies solely on fresh produce. And this concept shines through in every creation on offer. We recommend making reservations when you plan on visiting because Gaia is fully booked almost every evening. In fact, one of the first things we noticed on our visit is the social buzz – a house full of diners eagerly waiting to sample the culinary brilliance showcased by the restaurant’s chefs. But once you settle down, you’ll notice how truly stunning the venue is. The clean neutral interiors are highlighted in creamy whites, greys and beige, while comfy seating and bright chandeliers light up the expansive space. Solid marble furnishings and rose gold elements

FINE DINING  |  IN THE UAE

add a touch of elegance to the venue, and it all comes together as a nod to a traditional taverna, but with Gaia’s modern touch. Taking centre stage at the venue is an ice market, brimming with fresh catches, from lobsters, prawns and squid to more local varieties. Here you can take your pick of seafood, with the help of the restaurant’s staff who will be happy to assist with recommendations. We started off with the choriatiki salata (Greek salad) and we recommend you do, too. Giving you a true taste of the Med with fresh and flavourful ingredients, the dish is one of the restaurant’s many highlights. Simply put together with a mountain of tomatoes, barrel-aged feta and homemade pickled olives, it works well as a light starter, offsetting all the indulgence that lies ahead. From the menu’s raw section, the most recommended items include the salmon carpaccio, served simply with lemon, olive oil, chilli and dill. The lightly smoked tuna carpaccio with black truffle dressing is also not to be missed. Fans of oysters can take their pick from the fresh market, while caviar is also on offer. Paired with some bubbly, this makes for the ideal treat. Up next, we opted for the restaurant’s fresh catch of the day as our mains – the calamari. With very little in the way of other ingredients – tomatoes, pickled shallots and a dash of lemon juice – the fresh flavour of the squid really shone through. While the calamari is grilled to a slight crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, the leftover dressing goes well with the crusty bread on your table, so don’t be afraid to dunk it right in. Accompanying our seafood mains was a vegetarian option – the creamy mushroom pasta topped with white or black truffle –definitely an item you shouldn’t miss. But if there’s one thing you’ll find yourself coming back for, it’s the wonderfully delicious filo mille feuille, made up of crispy filo sheets, sweet fresh cream and drizzled with pistachios. We couldn’t ask for a sweeter end to our meal! 

The menu champions humble and authentic Greek cuisine that relies solely on fresh produce

THROUGH the LABYRINTH Discover the charms of old Dubai as you lose yourself in the maze of alleyways that is Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – a tribute to the emirate’s past Visiting the quaint quarters of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood feels like taking a step back in time. Gone are the record-breaking skyscrapers that dominate the emirate’s skyline, replaced instead by traditional structures fashioned out of stone, rustic courtyards and wind towers. Intertwined narrow alleys and cobbled pathways – punctuated with creek views – fan out in every direction, inviting you to lose yourself in Dubai’s beating cultural heart. For a glimpse of life in the emirates as it was years ago, there is no substitute for a visit to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. But it is not only its traditional architecture that offers insight into the region’s past. Peppered throughout the labyrinthine district are museums, art galleries and kiosks that showcase traditions practised in the days gone by. And it is here that visitors can discover the nation’s humble beginnings and gain a deeper appreciation for the local way of life. Built with traditional materials such as stone, gypsum, teak, sandalwood, palm fronds and wood, the architectural structures found in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood span decades, from the early 19th century to the 1970s.

As you meander the lanes, you’ll notice that most of the buildings have been ingeniously recreated to mimic the days of old. But they seamlessly blend in with the original structures left behind. Feel free to explore at your own leisure and pop into the museums, galleries, cafés and arts and crafts shops lining the streets to make the most of your visit. Previously known as Al Bastakiya, the district has always played a crucial role in the country’s economy. Its prime position along Dubai Creek, with the Arabian Gulf, only metres away, allowed international trade to flourish in the region, transforming the UAE from a humble fishing and pearl diving village to a global metropolis, known for its record-breaking structures and penchant for luxury. Even today, this cultural sanctuary is a status symbol and occupies a strategic position adjacent to the diwan of Dubai’s ruler. Winding through these streets tells a story of the nation’s past that joins the dots to its present, an immersive tale that can only be truly experienced with a visit to this fabled district. From the art galleries to quaint cafés and more, there’s plenty to explore.

DUBAI MUSEUM, AL FAHIDI FOR T

A short walk from the cultural centre, the Al Fahidi Fort, which is the oldest structure in the emirate, is home to the Dubai Museum. Built in 1787, it was once a monarch base. Following renovation a few years ago, the fort reopened in 1971 as Dubai Museum – the same year the United Arab Emirates was formed. Housed within are galleries that shed light on the region’s history and heritage with recreations of everyday life in the emirates before the discovery of oil. Explore historic local houses, mosques, souks, date farms, desert fauna, marine life and the practice of pearl fishing, a stark contrast to the Dubai that the world knows today.   dubaiculture.gov.ae

COFFEE MUSEUM

Gahwa or coffee shares inextricable links with Emirati hospitality and a journey into the region’s traditions wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Coffee Museum. A hub for all things coffee, you’ll find everything from early bean grinders and brewers on display while also enjoying tastings. Settle down for a refreshing brew at the museum’s coffee shop and grab a front seat at the counter to learn about the various stages of preparation from roasting to grinding and brewing. With films, demonstrations and tastings, it is the hub for all things coffee.   coffeemuseum.ae

Nestled within XVA Hotel Dubai, the art gallery has championed contemporary Middle Eastern art in the region since 2003. While enthusiasts will find themselves immersed in the artwork and installations on display as part of the gallery’s rotating exhibitions, the space’s unique setting is equally worthy of your attention. An ode to the area’s natural surroundings, the trees, which blossomed in the building’s internal courtyards, have been retained to reflect the district’s old-world ambience.   xvagallery.com

One of the original cultural centres in the area, this informative space allows visitors the chance to delve deeper into local customs. The centre offers a variety of interactive activities including one-on-one sessions to connect with its Emirati hosts. Events are also held with the aim of sharing knowledge about the history of Dubai and its people. One of the most popular experiences offered here is an authentic Emirati breakfast or lunch, served in a traditional majlisstyle set-up, while a local host talks about the region’s culture.   cultures.ae

Roaring success Dubai-based interior designer Pallavi Dean talks design philosophy and fashion fads

An architecture graduate of the American University of Sharjah with a masters degree in Interior Design Theory from Savannah College of Art and Design, Pallavi Dean has emerged as one of the most influential figures in the UAE design community. A winner of the Middle East Young Interior Designer of the Year award in 2010 and having previously worked as an associate in the interior design department of Godwin Austen Johnson, one of the Middle East’s leading architecture practices, Dean went on to open her own business in 2013. Originally named Pallavi Dean Interiors, the company rebranded as Roar in September 2018 and has now completed close to 120 projects in eight countries and won 21 awards. LuxLife met with Dean to discover more about her passion for design and where she finds inspiration.

INTERVIEW | INSPIRED LIVING

“The fast pace of Dubai’s development drew me in and propelled me to study architecture” When did your passion for interior design begin? “Born in India, but raised in Dubai, I grew up in the city in the 1980s and 1990s, just as it was embracing design and was about to make a splash on the world stage. Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Burj Al Arab Jumeirah used architecture as a marketing tool and this got Dubai on the front cover of magazines. But there was something so fascinating about it. The fast pace of Dubai’s development throughout my youth drew me in and propelled me to study architecture at the American University of Sharjah. “After practising in the UAE for two years, I decided to go back to school. After a summer semester studying set design at Central Saint Martins in London, I developed an interest in smaller-scale structures, particularly spatial installations. Interiors for me was a happy middle ground between the two: architecture on a macro scale and installations on a micro scale.”

Can you describe your first design project? “A mouse trap-style marble obstacle course I created in my first year at architecture school.” What was the inspiration behind your company name changing from Pallavi Dean Interiors to Roar? “We work in such a collaborative way that having one name above the door just didn’t feel right and we wanted something with emotion and identity. We worked with a bunch of coaches who were very useful in helping us understand the DNA of the firm: things like personality, agility and unrelenting energy kept cropping up. INTERVIEW | INSPIRED LIVING

What would you say is the key to success in the world of interior design? “Collaboration with like-minded people and having a very clear business goal. Yes, the senior team – that’s myself, Kathryn Athreya, Managing Director, and Agata Kurzela, Design Director, we all have our own unique design styles and preferences, but as a firm, we share a common design philosophy. For us, it’s not about trends, fashions or fads. We all believe that at the core of design it’s all about the human experience. “Our work aims to give people an amazing experience in the spaces we design. The staff in an office, the family at home, the children in school, the guests in a restaurant; we wake up and go to work for them. Secondly, we have a very clear business goal: to attract world-class opportunities. Hands down, the areas where you make the biggest difference in a design firm are people and culture. It’s about how you foster that. We like to think we’re changing what it means to be an interior design firm. A better culture, a better philosophy, a better way of working. “For example, we’ve scrapped fixed hours for designers and found that the benefits to us – and our clients – are huge. It’s a big factor in attracting and retaining talent. But, most importantly, creative people do their best work when you set them free.” Who or what is your biggest inspiration? “Is it predictable as a designer to say that inspiration comes from everywhere? Perhaps then, travel. I am naturally a curious mind and love exploring. As a designer, I think it’s essential to keep on that journey of discovery, to invest time in learning, experiencing new ways of living, working and playing – to keep things fresh and continue to innovate.” What is the most frustrating part of your job as a designer? And what is the most rewarding? “Kengo Kuma said an architect is never satisfied – that’s what drives us forward to create a body of work. But it can equally be a

source of great frustration. At our studio, we are constantly seeking opportunities to do our best work and the most rewarding day is when, I hope, I can look back and be content not with the volume, but the quality of design we’ve produced.” What is your ultimate design project? “That’s a tricky question to answer since there’s so much out there I’d like to get my hands on. I guess, one prospect that excites me is taking Roar overseas. Partly that means getting on a plane as India and Africa are definitely calling. In fact, there’s a collaboration with an international lighting manufacturer on the horizon. But it also means getting in a car. We’re already strong

As a designer, I think it’s essential to keep on that journey of discovery, to invest time in learning in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and we’ve done a bit of work in Ras Al Khaimah, but Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah are still largely uncharted territory. “What is really taking shape is our ‘ultimate design research project’. We are collaborating with psychologist Briar Jacques, who works at the Lighthouse Centre for Wellbeing in Dubai, on a piece of detailed research into workplace usage and design in the Middle East. It’s all under wraps at the moment, but we’ll hopefully be sharing findings soon. So keep your eyes peeled as exciting surprises lie ahead.” 

A STORY TO TELL

Following a decade of careful restoration and renovation, Qasr Al Hosn has transformed into a museum highlighting the rich history of Abu Dhabi 33 LUXLIFE_ISSUE 02_2019_INSPIRED LIVING_QASR AL HOSN.indd 33

When visiting the UAE capital, there are all the hallmarks of a modern city. Huge highways lead to sprawling malls, towering skyscrapers and world-class attractions. Yet as the emirate continues to evolve and look towards the future, it is determined to remember and honour its past. It was back in 1761 that the Bedouin Bani Yas tribe first settled on the island of Abu Dhabi. Little more than a desert outpost, the town began to expand rapidly during the heyday of the pearl trade. When the industry collapsed, the power and prosperity of the emirate declined until the discovery of oil in 1958. From this moment, the development of the city truly began and it has flourished ever since. Throughout this entire period of history, one monument has remained. Qasr Al Hosn is Abu Dhabi’s oldest heritage site, parts of which date all the way back to the 1760s. Made up of an inner fort that was built with coral and sea stone by Sheikh Shakbut bin Dhiyab in 1795 and an outer palace added by Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1939, it has been home to the ruling family, the seat of government and a national archive. Now, after more than a decade of restoration, it has reopened as a living memorial and a narrator of Abu Dhabi’s history. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of the royals who lived there more than 200 years ago, climb the watchtower which was built to overlook the coastal trade routes and explore a museum with artefacts and archival materials that date as far back as 6,000 BCE. Within Qasr Al Hosn there are also historical photographs that sit alongside modern Emirati artwork, while traditional crafts of Bedouin women are showcased through an interactive exhibition in the House of Artisans. Here you will see demonstrations of talli embroidery and braiding date palm leaves to make baskets.

Qasr Al Hosn will remain a permanent reminder of just how far the emirate has come With so much to offer, it is difficult to know where to begin. Fortunately, Salama Al Shamsi, Director of Al Hosn, is more than happy to detail the best way to spend a day at the historic structure. “I suggest spending the morning wandering through the palace and the historic watchtower,” she explains. “Then stroll through the landscape, experiencing the water feature and the oasis inspired by the polygonal-patterned shapes of the dried salt flats. “In the afternoon, head to the Cultural Foundation and start off by seeing the current exhibition and walking through the artist studio. Then take part in an afternoon workshop such as acrylic painting with a local artist, followed by an evening talk from a leading industry expert.” As Al Shamsi explains, there is a great deal to do at Qasr Al Hosn beyond just exploring the history of this magnificent structure.

There are exhibitions through the year as well as heritage workshops and a calendar of Emirati music events. Ultimately, the aim is for the site to reclaim its bygone status as a hub for culture and community in the UAE capital. To help achieve this, there will also be an annual series of specialised tours that highlight the major themes, including architecture, history and anthropology. “We are striving to have Qasr Al Hosn as the first stop of every visitor who visits Abu Dhabi,” adds Al Shamsi. As Abu Dhabi continues to evolve and transform, Qasr Al Hosn will remain a permanent reminder of just how far the emirate has come and it is the perfect way for visitors to discover that there is much more than just meets the eye in the emirate.   qasralhosn.ae

Decorative arts LuxLife looks at some of the most exceptional pieces from the recent Christie’s auction for an insight into the wonderful world of interiors

Throughout the year, renowned auction house Christie’s works with a guest curator and hosts an interiors sale. Designed to show how you can mix different periods and styles to create individual design schemes in your own home, these feature everything from antique furniture to modern classics. Held in London, New York and Paris, there is a mix of contemporary and classic pieces. We take a look at the most recent auctions to see which lots created the most buzz.

COCK TAIL SHA KER

At first glance, it may seem little more than an ornament, but at closer inspection, this lighthouse is revealed to be a cocktail shaker. Produced in Connecticut in 1927, the novelty silver-plated product is bound to catch the eye of any visitor. It eventually sold for almost triple its estimate – reaching a price of AED56,000.

DUNHILL YACHT TABLE LIGHTER

Only expected to fetch AED14,000, this pair of table lighters from dunhill eventually sold for AED53,516 – proving that there is still a market for these iconic products. Produced in the mid-20th century and decorated with an aquarium design, this style of petrol lighters became hugely popular in the 1940s and ‘50s, especially with former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.

HICKS & MEIGH IRONS TONE CHINA DINNER SERVICE

Dating back to 1820 and painted in blue, iron-red and gold with oriental flowering plants, this huge collection of plates and dishes showed that there is a huge demand for classic Chinaware in immaculate condition. Expected to reach between AED58,000 and AED78,000, the lot eventually went for a huge total of AED203,000.

CHRISTIE’S AUCTION | INSPIRED LIVING

These extraordinary pieces feature everything from antique furniture to modern classics INDIAN WHITE-PAINTED ARCHITEC TUR AL FAÇADE Selling at 50 times its AED10,000-20,000 estimate, this Indian white-painted architectural façade from the late 19th or early 20th century reached an impressive AED483,000 at a recent auction. Modelled to depict a grand Mughal facade with pierced and carved pavilions, the 1.6-metre-high and 1.8-metre-wide piece was later painted and fitted for electricity.

SHEEP IN A L ANDSCAPE W ITH A CHURCH BE YOND Owning a statement art piece is a must and this oil on canvas production by William Henry Davis unsurprisingly proved hugely popular when auctioned in London. Signed, inscribed and dated, the piece went for almost six times its estimate, eventually being sold for more than AED83,000.

SOUTH GERMAN ORMOLU TABLE CLOCK This museum-quality piece demands attention and is sure to be the focal point of any home. Expertly gilded in silver and brass and dating back to 1705, this quarter-striking astronomical masterpiece table clock fetched an astonishing AED2.5 million.

Rule breaker Renowned for creating truly unique timepieces, MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser has never been afraid to go against the grain

Working as a senior manager at Jaeger-LeCoultre and then as CEO at Harry Winston, Maximilian Büsser had always conformed to the rules of corporate watchmaking. Then, after 15 years at these famous brands, he decided to break free of the chains and start his own avant-garde boutique watch brand called MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends). In the 14 years since that decision, MB&F has established itself as one of the most innovative watch

brands in the world. Each timepiece is unique, with Büsser seeing his creations as mechanical works of art. The newest production, the Legacy Machine FlyingT, was unveiled recently at Baselworld to critical acclaim. We met with Büsser at The MB&F M.A.D. Gallery in Dubai to learn more about his creative approach to watchmaking, discover why its important to embrace the digital age and find out why events such as Baselworld and SIHH remain hugely important.

MB&F | FINER THINGS

We have seen big name brands embracing the digital age by coming out with smartwatches. What do you make of this trend and can you see the watch industry changing in the years to come? “The smartwatch is changing our industry for sure. And those who think that traditional high-end mechanical watchmaking will not be affected are delusional. At the same time, it seems insane for the Swiss to try to compete with the USA, China and Korea in that industry. No one would expect the Swiss to compete in the smartphone market so why do you think we have a chance in the smartwatch world which is not a watch but a mini-computer? “The real battle we are facing is a real-estate one, and the prized possession is actually our clients’ wrists. Will our clients start wearing a smartwatch on one wrist and a beautiful mechanical timepiece on the other or will they just abandon art for convenience. I actually have no idea but the big watch brands will have to come out with way more interesting and enthusiasm-generating creations if they want to level the playing field.”

What were you looking for when you decided to make the move to your new home? “MB&F was definitely a life decision, not a business one. I needed to create a small company that would allow me to be free on a creative and human level. By following my own path, I have invented a seemingly new business model and am happy if it inspires others to find their own way. “When I first launched, I had the designs of HM1 and HM2 and a sketch of HM3. That is all. Now 14 years later, we have created 10 horological machines, five legacy machines and dozens of co-creations. I had no idea I would be creating all that.” Towards the end of last year, you released the HM9, when did you dream up the concept and how many years did it take to create? “I wanted the HM9 Flow to be a tribute to the great aerodynamic designs of the 1940s and ‘50s. A time when creators and engineers did not have wind tunnels to ensure their designs were actually efficient. With no such boundaries, the designers had finally way more freedom to create something beautiful. “I had the idea to create the watch in early 2015 and it took three and a half years to come to life, but it should have taken much longer. We were lucky that we had already spent many years developing the very first double flying balance wheel movement with LM2 and that we had experimented so much with insanely difficult cases like our HM4 and HM6 before that. Otherwise, it would have easily taken eight to nine years and I’m still not sure it would have seen the light of day.”

How important are shows such as SIHH and Baselworld and is it a good idea for them to run back to back from 2020? “They are far from ideal but they bring convenience. We are retailed through 24 retailers in 19 countries. If we were not presenting at SIHH and Baselworld, we would be travelling the world for months trying to showcase our novelties to all our retail partners and the press. “Next year, the two shows being back to back, we will need to decide which one we choose. Each show has its pros and cons. It will, for sure, make the retailers and press’ lives much easier by travelling only once to Switzerland instead of twice in a short timespan.” Do you already have ideas for watches that MB&F will produce in the next several years? “The most frustrating part of my work is that it is so incredibly engineering intensive, which means that any new idea will take us three to four years to complete. If I do not know today what is coming out in four years, there will be nothing. We have at the moment seven movements in the pipeline, taking us to 2024. Some are fully functional and waiting to be delivered, others are at the early stages of feasibility studies. However, not knowing what will pop into my head and therefore take the company to the next step is a great part of the fun.” 

You also recently released the HM6 Final Edition, but do you ever feel pressured by collectors and enthusiasts to keep coming up with new takes on a series? “Our collectors and fans’ expectations keep on increasing with each launch. It is something I cannot think about because it would completely block my creative process. At the end of the day, I am not interested in recreating something I have already done so I am the most difficult person to please. “In the case of the HM6 Final Edition, it was truly a way to honour our word. We had said from the launch date that there would be only 100 movements crafted. After four years, there were eight movements left to craft and we decided to make a very special piece out of them. It honestly makes no economical sense to create a new case for eight pieces, but that is also why I created MB&F; to be free to create whatever I want without having a CFO or CMO tell me what to do.”

HAUTLENCE HL SPHERE

Dividing opinion at the show, this hand-wound calibre timepiece features Hautlence’s eighth internally developed movement. The sphere rotates 450 degrees on two spindles at 21-degree angles every hour to display the correct hour while the retrograde minute display makes this watch very power hungry.

ALCHEMIS TS CU2 9

Visually stunning, this haute horlogerie piece has a lot of interesting elements. The case material is a cuprom alloy which is a blend of copper, gold and silver, while the bubble-like aesthetic allows for an interesting view of all the mechanical components.

LuxLife test drives the new Lamborghini Urus to find out if the world’s fastest SUV is worth the substantial price tag

Few cars have polarised opinion in recent times like the Lamborghini Urus. The thought of an SUV from the makers of the Miura, Countach and Diablo was too much for some. Well, we’ve driven it on the road, the racetrack and in the bush and thankfully it’s still a Lamborghini in all the right places. Lamborghini has stepped into the rich family territory for the first time with the 641bhp, twin turbo V8 Urus SUV and it can only be described as explosive regardless of what surface its wheels are on. It’s hard to dispute the claim that the US$200,000 Urus is the world’s fastest SUV with a zero to 100kmph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 305kmph because that’s faster in both respects than Lamborghini’s V10 Gallardo supercar from a decade earlier. The 370mm carbon ceramic discs with six-piston callipers on the rear are bigger than the front discs on most Lamborghinis while the 440mm discs with 10-piston callipers on the front are the biggest brakes on any production car in the world. This enables it to stop its 2.2-tonne mass from 100kmph in a shorter distance than the Gallardo in just 33.7 metres. While the company claims to still predominantly be a supercar manufacturer, every second Lamborghini it sells from now on will be an SUV which they hope will be used as a daily driver to win over first-time owners. “We are now competing in a segment that is represented by all the manufacturers, not just our traditional rivals,” said company Chairman and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

ANIMA OR EGO?

While Urus shares underpinnings with other VW Group SUVs, namely the Bentley Bentayga and Audi Q7, it has a longer wheelbase. Likewise, it shares the 48-volt, self-levelling rear suspension from the Bentayga but has exclusive use of a torque vectoring system and four-wheel steering taken from the Aventador S. At just over five metres long, Urus is imposing but its all-wheel steering turns the back wheels three degrees in and out to reduce its perceived wheelbase by 600mm to just 2.4 metres giving it a smaller turning circle than the Huracan. A Torsen centre self-locking diff provides maximum control and agility in most conditions but especially off road. Torque is split 40/60 front to rear with a maximum of 70 percent sent to the front or 87 percent back to the rear depending on the driving circumstances.

45 LUXLIFE_ISSUE 02_2019_FINER THINGS_Lamborghini.indd 45

12/18/19 11:38 AM

Its active torque vectoring provides more traction to each rear wheel as well as additional steering control, so less steering effort is required and it also raises its corner speed on the road and track. Sitting behind the Alcantara-covered wheel, peering out over instruments that are more at home in a low-slung Aventador, the driver’s view feels oddly high by comparison but the engineering team have worked hard to keep its centre of gravity as low as possible. The Tamburo mode selector on the Urus offers a labyrinth of chassis set-up options with the Anima console on the left housing six settings, while the Ego console on the right offers nine further permutations within each of the six from Anima. The Anima console features six drive settings from Strada (street), Sport and Corsa (track) on tarmac that mimic those used on the Huracan and Aventador as well as Neve (snow), Terra (gravel) and Sabbia (sand) for off-road use. Once selected, the mode can be further refined using the Ego selector on the right to find smooth, medium or sports settings for the Traction, Steering and Suspension controls. Confusing? Yes, but once mastered it lets you get the absolute maximum performance from every facet of the Urus for virtually any condition.

PERF ORM A NCE ON ROA D, TR ACK AND GR AVEL On road, it felt little different to most other high-end luxury SUV’s though its optional 23-inch rims made the ride a bit stiffer than expected, even in Strada mode. But the steering was docile enough around town and the change up pattern from the eight-speed box was soft and smooth. On track in Corsa mode, it hunkered down and got to business turning in some impressive lap times. The exhausts opened up to fire a few deep belches on change up as it sailed to easily into the 5,800rpm redline cut off. Its understeer, when pushed hard under extreme conditions, was about the only feedback reminding you that this was a big five-door wagon and not an Aventador. Finally, it attacked a gravel course like a rally stage, using its massive torque curve to carve its way through sandy ruts spitting out giant rooster

tails, traversing up loose, gravelly hills like it was the Pikes Peak Hillclimb and even held itself together over a small jump where it briefly managed to get air. Lamborghini will also offer an off-roading package that will use the standard sized 21-inch rims coupled with a body kit comprising restyled front and rear bumpers for better approach and departure angles.

WINNING OVER NE W CUSTOMERS

The biggest job for Urus is to convince customers to consider a Lamborghini for the first time and as Chief Marketing Officer, Katia Bassi noted, Urus is about shifting the company towards a new, more suburban demographic. “Urus has given us a chance to not so much re-invent Lamborghini, but to widen our scope.” With a target to double the company’s output from 3,500 vehicles per year to 7,000, Urus needs to find a lot of new customers and that means women for what until now has been a largely male-dominated buyer profile. Lamborghini established a Female Advisory Board comprising 250 women globally who are influential but not influencers, from many industries to predict future trends. “We created the board so that we can talk to women about Lamborghini in a different way. It’s not about technicalities or performance but more related to the car business in general and how things are changing for women,” said Bassi. “These ladies come from different professional circles so they can show us what’s happening and how we can learn from it. They excel in their industries of sport, theatre, fashion and IT and we believe they can be a great asset to our future thinking. “We would like to understand how they face challenges with things like fake news and the digital environment because it’s important that we exchange experiences to be more effective and to become more conscious of what we are doing. “The automotive industry is forced to follow the same timeline of the development of the car which is slow compared to almost every other industry, so this board will help keep Lamborghini at the forefront of trends and allow us to get more women into Lamborghinis.” 

Cannes uncovered LuxLife goes behind the scenes to discover all the city has to offer

Famous for hosting the annual Cannes Film Festival, it is all too easy to discount this charming French city when planning a European vacation. But once the cameras stop flashing and the celebrities depart, there is still plenty to be enjoyed, from the beautiful beaches and cultural sights to the designer bars and couture shops. The wealth and glamour of the city cannot fail to impress. Ferraris and Porsches line the streets, the golden beaches are surrounded by luxurious resorts, while at the port, visitors will discover mega yachts and no end of fine dining venues. With wonderful weather, a quaint old quarter, a bustling bay and the famous beaches benefitting from a serious overhaul, a trip to Cannes is an absolute must.

FINDING THE RIGHT ROOM

Cannes is home to some of the best hotels in the world that have welcomed an array of famous guests. The InterContinental Carlton Cannes was a favourite of the late Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor and remains a firm favourite among those seeking a luxurious stay. Alternatively, the Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic is situated on the famed Promenade de la Croisette and faces the Palais des Festivals, the home of the Cannes Film Festival. Boasting a private beach and an exceptional spa, it is also the best place to spot a celebrity. Meanwhile, Le Grand Hotel Cannes offers guests spectacular ocean views and delectable Michelin-star cuisine.

ESSENTIAL AT TR AC TIONS

In the city’s old neighbourhood, Le Suquet, visitors will discover Musée de la Castre and the Eglise Notre-Dame d’Espérance. Both the ancient castle and the picturesque church are well worth exploring, while the small hill they sit on offers spectacular views across the rest of the city. Located next to Le Suquet is Le Vieux Port, a marina that is home to some of the world’s most impressive boats and yachts. There are also numerous cafés from which to admire the amazing vessels while indulging in some traditional French cuisine. Or for a true taste of Cannes, head to Marche Forville where you can pick some local cheese and artisan bread.

55 LUXLIFE_ISSUE 02_2019_ESCAPES_CANNES.indd 55

12/18/19 12:12 PM

The port also offers a ferry to Ile Sainte-Marguerite, an island famed for its fortress prison where the so-called Man in the Iron Mask was held. A trip to the Palais de Festival, a huge warehouse-type complex housing cinemas that are used during the Cannes Film Festival, is also an absolute must. Here you can pose for pictures on the famous entrance to the concrete bunker before exploring the Allée des Étoiles du Cinéma, Cannes’ version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the evening, take a stroll along the Promenade de la Croisette that allows you to appreciate both the oceanfront Art Deco-style hotels and the memorable sea views. And because no trip to Cannes is complete without a spot of shopping, head to the Rue d’Antibes to discover all things design and fashion.

THE SHOPPING LIS T

As you would expect from such a glamorous destination, Cannes has no shortage of designer shops, perfumeries and boutiques. For those seeking upmarket brands, Boulevard de la Croisette has stores from famous names such as Gucci, Armani and Prada, and is undoubtedly the strip to be seen on. Alternatively, Rue d’Antibes is home to upmarket high street shops and is one of the busier avenues in the city. This is also the ideal area for those seeking exclusive perfumes and chic designs by fashion’s rising stars. And due to its popularity, there are plenty of cafés and bars where you can take a well-needed break or simply watch the world go by.

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL Founded in 1946, the festival takes place every May and previews new films of all genres, including documentaries from all over the world. Introduced in order to “draw attention to and raise the profile of films”, the aim of the event is to celebrate all kinds of cinema. The most prestigious award given at Cannes is the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) for the best film, which has been won by acclaimed directors such as Ken Loach for I, Daniel Blake, Roman Polanski for The Pianist and David Lynch for Wild at Heart.

DINE IN S T YLE

With Cannes being big on luxury, it is no surprise that the dining scene in this relatively small resort city is bursting at the seams. There are award-winning restaurants, chic dining rooms and al fresco venues with amazing panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Perhaps the very best, though, is La Palme d’Or, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant decorated in Art Deco style and serving outstanding seasonal dishes. Located within the Grand Hyatt Hôtel Martinez, it boasts a ‘movement’ menu that features oysters, fillet of lamb and a choco pigeon tartlet. Another venue that currently holds two Michelin stars is Villa Archange, which is located in a charming 18th-century building just 10 minutes from the Promenade de la Croisette. At the helm is chef Bruno Oger who has developed a special US$250 La Tables des Anges menu, which includes roasted langoustine, veal knuckle and a chocolate dessert. This intimate venue is a favourite among residents in Cannes and features just 26 seats that overlook a private courtyard. For a true taste of the Mediterranean, head to the sun-soaked terrace at Le Park 45. Looking out across a manicured garden, the restaurant offers a series of tasting menus, including the six-course Clair-Obscur that features baby squid, sea bass and lamb dishes. For vegetarians, there’s even a separate menu option with dishes such as white beans, summer truffles and apricots. 

ADVENTURE AWAITS Escape the dunes and discover a melting pot of cultures, cuisines and landscapes in picture-perfect Cape Town

With the backdrop of the majestic Table Mountain and the expansive coastline, Cape Town is a destination that has it all. For beach lovers, there is almost year-round sunshine and picturesque stretches of coastline. Art enthusiasts will love exploring the brightly coloured façades around Bo-Kaap, while for those seeking more of an adrenaline rush, the terrain lends itself perfectly. In fact, South Africa’s port city is fast becoming an adventure traveller’s destination of choice, with everything from diving and hiking to abseiling and water sports helping draw in a new kind of visitor. This impressive outdoor offering combined with pleasant temperatures has helped Cape Town become increasingly popular with those looking for an adventurous escape. Temperate conditions make the city perfect to explore by foot with beautiful running and hiking trails surrounded by mountains and green forests, ideal for those who want to get back to nature. A must visit is the 9,800-hectare reserve at Jonkershoek in Stellenbosch, which is located just outside of the city. With trails from three to 11 miles, there is a range of routes. Along the way, visitors get to see waterfalls, reservoirs and views of the stunning Cape Peninsula, Table Mountain and Robben Island. One of the seven new wonders of the world, Table Mountain is another destination that consistently draws in thousands of visitors each year. A myriad of hiking routes, there are a number of professional tour companies and trained guides to help tackle the climbs. There are options for those seeking a challenge, with several ascents known to be extremely steep, while those who are inexperienced can choose the trails that go around the mountain. Many of these also peak near the cable car allowing the option of a gentler descent. For those who prefer to get around on two wheels, there are many equally impressive mountain biking trails around Cape Town. While Table Mountain could seem daunting, many other areas have more manageable routes and f latter terrains, from Stellenbosch to Rhebokskloof and Tokai Forest to Helderberg. Alternatively, for those who are unafraid of heights, there are a growing number of paragliding operators around town. With launch sites at Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, this is truly the way to get panoramic views of everything that the stunning city has to offer. Underwater, the thrill is no less. There are stunning reefs to be explored whether by snorkelling or diving, while tour companies run trips out to sea where great mammals such as dolphins and whales can be spotted. Or for the truly adventurous, cage diving offers the opportunity to get up close with the ocean’s greatest predator, the Great White Shark. Far less intimidating is the population of more than 10,000 Cape Fur Seals, nicknamed ‘the puppies of the ocean’, belying their 300-kilogram weight, which can be found at their home

on Duiker Island. This is one of the few places where it is possible to watch the mammals in their native environment and if the weather is right, snorkel with them, too. Though most people visit Cape Town for its mountainous terrain, its desert is the stuff of movies. Covering an area of around 32 square kilometres, and a 45-minute drive north of Cape Town, Atlantis Dunes has become an adventure sports hub. Its ever-changing landscape of pure white sand dunes reaching up to 50 metres high makes it the perfect location for adventure sports including sandboarding, quad biking, extreme 4X4 rides and off-roading. In spite of the cold water temperatures, the city is also a year-round destination for surfers. The area has a myriad of schools dotted around for people starting off, while advanced thrill seekers can get more than their fair share of fun. Waters warm up a little from December through January, but the climate means the surf is always up, from one direction or another, and for all levels. There are point breaks, beach breaks and giant reef breaks so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Muizenberg’s gentle waves make it a top spot for beginners while Milnerton Lighthouse and Big Bay have something to suit all levels. Long Beach, Llandudno and Dungeons are the place for the big ones, and not to be taken lightly, waves of up to 60 feet have been recorded at times in Dungeons. Each area is best at different times of the year so check out locations in advance.

Though Cape Town is not huge, it is helpful to arrange where to stay around the activities planned. With so many areas, all with equal appeal, it can be hard to whittle down exactly where to drop anchor. Kalk Bay, Simon’s Town, Muizenberg, Gordon’s Bay and Hout Bay are recommended for sea activities such as kayaking, surfing, sailing or shark diving. With a multitude of options, hikers and climbers don’t need to be so specific as almost anywhere will be well located. With the vastness of Table Mountain, there are always hikes within a few minutes’ drive. The City Bowl is the most central location and close to most adventure activities but if the dunes are calling, it is worth basing out of Blouberg. Though the great outdoors may be the focus of an adventurer’s trip to Cape Town, there is no shortage of luxury places to make the stay as idyllic as the surrounds. From exquisite hotels like the Tree House Boutique Hotel to major global players such as The One And Only, deciding where to stay is far from simple. While it may have some of the best lodges in the world, it also has some top-class hotels and resorts. One of the oldest players which has been a celebrity favourite for many years is the Belmond Mount Nelson. Uber private, celebrities have often come to hide away in the property’s huge grounds overlooking Table Mountain. Famous faces including Sean Penn, Katie Holmes and Charlize Theron are all former guests at the 19th-century property.

CAPE TOWN | ESCAPES

From exquisite boutique hotels to major global players, deciding where to stay in Cape Town is far from simple Eating and drinking is also part of the DNA of Cape Town, from café culture to local cuisine and, of course, the infamous South African ‘braais’ (barbecue), fine dining to picnics. It now even offers a growing range of halal-friendly dining options, catering to the rising numbers of Muslim travellers. Mostly these are casual dining and cafés, but there are a small number of fine dining destinations. One of the newest is 126 Cape Kitchen and Café at the Hilton Hotel, CBD. A fusion restaurant, it caters to most tastes. Equally worth a visit is The Test Kitchen from chef Luke Dale-Roberts. Regarded as one of the best restaurants in the world, and placed second in the Mercedes-Benz Eat Out Restaurant Awards, reservations need to be made well in advance for those wishing to sample the fantastic food. One of the newest contenders on the fine dining scene, Liam Tomlin’s Thali is a beautifully decorated restaurant that features a picturesque outdoor terrace and serves Indian-style tapas. The curry-spiced oysters are unique and delightful, while the fish tacos – served in poppadoms – are full of flavour. They don’t take booking but thankfully there is ample space so finding a table is never a problem. Thanks to this impressive culinary scene, the beautiful landscapes and wide range of activities, there is something to suit every taste in Cape Town. In fact, it is impossible to cram everything into one trip which is why visitors keep returning to the stunning city. 

Setting new standards Purchasing a home has never been easier, thanks to DAMAC Properties’ dedicated CRM support team It is no secret that investing in a new home can be stressful and sometimes even confusing. For new homeowners especially, the sheer paperwork can seem daunting. Juggling property decisions, finances, home inspections, interior design requirements and maintenance operations only adds to the complications, making the handover process stressful. There was once a time when investors understood that challenges were an inevitable part of the journey, but in today’s competitive market, businesses have completely transformed the way they deal with their clients. People are acutely aware, more than ever, of what good service looks like and a seamless customer service experience has never been more important. For the real estate industry, this means that ensuring every stage within the life cycle of the customer, from presale through to handover and beyond, is smooth and stress-free.

That is why, every department within DAMAC Properties is involved in delivering the most convenient and hassle-free experience for each client. With customer service executives working closely with buyers, a smooth transition from potential investor to homeowner is now the norm.

L AYING THE FOUNDATION

DAMAC Properties believes that any house purchased is a big decision for both investors and end users. Buyers are emotionally engaged throughout the entire process. Therefore, it is essential for the customer service team to be very understanding of this aspect and form relationships with the customer during the presale stage itself. With new technology, this phase is now is a lot more interactive than it used to be.

During the pre-sale stage, potential buyers are taken on a virtual 360-degree tour of their dream home through DAMAC Properties’ digital portal. This not only lays the foundation for a positive relationship with the customer but it also helps them identify their specific needs. It gives them a new perspective on their property and what an empty villa or apartment can look like as it transforms into their family home. This stage is especially important as it helps customers make an informed decision about going ahead with their purchase.

EMBR ACING TECHNOLOGY

The handover is one of the most gratifying phases in real estate development, marking an exciting final step for the parties involved. But the phase between a confirmed purchase decision and being handed the keys to a new property is where most of the challenges lie. Not only is it time-consuming but as the property is taking shape, all the necessary paperwork is also underway. Going through bundles of documents to ensure everything is in place is undoubtedly stressful, but with DAMAC Properties’ efficient customer support, this stage has been greatly simplified. The team has embraced an innovative approach to delighting the customer, which means that all processes leading up to handover are streamlined and simplified to ensure a smooth-sailing experience for every buyer. Call waiting times have also been reduced to ensure that no call goes unanswered and email response times have also been shortened. As part of the new and improved customer journey, customers have access to property information on the go through the online self-service portal, Hello DAMAC. This can be accessed 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world and provides customers with a snapshot of their property portfolio while also enabling

CUSTOMER SERVICE | THE BUSINESS END

the creation of a dedicated experience centre on site with a skilled customer service team to solely look after potential and existing AKOYA customers. The aim was to give customers a one-stop-shop, where they could walk in, look at their property, identify opportunities for upgrades, complete their paperwork and walk away with the keys to their new home in a single trip. For AKOYA customers, this means that in a matter of a few hours the transaction is complete and they can begin their journey as a new homeowner in this vibrant community. As the team points out, an important element in the entire process that sets the customer experience at AKOYA apart is the fact that relationship managers are living in the community itself to be able to provide an unmatched level of service. Being permanently stationed at the property ensure relationship managers are familiar with the ins and outs of the neighbourhood to be able to answer any questions the customer might pose.

Although going digital is the norm, there are no compromises to the human element them to action important steps automatically. They can now easily update their personal information, chat with customer service agents, submit service requests, make payments directly and also book appointments to meet a customer service representative, all without the added stress of standing in long queues to complete the necessary formalities. To complement the portal, those purchasing a property can also access dedicated customer support by reaching out to assigned customer relationship managers who will address any queries. The CRM team is always on hand, whether on the phone or in person, to help create a seamless journey towards homeownership.

HANDOVERS DONE RIGHT

A perfect example of handovers made easy by DAMAC Properties lies in its largest and most significant property to date. A self-sustaining community designed as an oasis of calm within Dubai’s bustling metropolis, AKOYA occupies a prime position in the real estate developer’s extensive portfolio. Given the strategic nature and sheer size of AKOYA, the team felt that it was important to bring about a very different approach to customer service. This led to

GOING THE E X TR A MILE

For the customer service team, the handover is not the end of the road. In fact, maintaining relationships with homeowners is key. Therefore, customer experience managers make it a point to always keep in touch with buyers. For customers who’ve been handed the keys to their property, DAMAC Properties deploys surveys to obtain information about their experience at various stages of the investment process, all the way through to handover. This allows the team to obtain feedback at every step, which is fully digitised so that executives who’ve dealt with these customers can see what has been said about them and accordingly improve upon their service. Post handover, Hello DAMAC also comes in handy for residents and owners to request property management services. The digital portal helps owners and residents book amenities, register tenants, notify the building management about moving in or out and much more. Payments for maintenance services can also be made online, allowing for convenience and ease in accessing facilities management services. Complaints are also registered in the system, giving customers a single point to access everything they need for easy property management.

KEEPING IT PERSONAL

Although going digital is the norm in today’s world, for DAMAC Properties, there are no compromises to the human element. Tying the overall customer experience together is that personal touch the relationship managers bring. The team believes that while technology is a great asset, it doesn’t replace the personal element. And it only takes a few small steps such as attending to customers within five minutes of arrival, greeting them with a smile, hearing them out patiently and understanding their perspective to ensure a pleasant home-buying experience. 

New homeowner and resident of DAMAC Hills, Waala Elhalwany tells us what makes the community an ideal choice for families

A s one of DA M AC Properties’ biggest developments to date, DA M AC H i l l s i s home t o mor e t h a n 6,0 0 0 people who’ve made the community their very own. Thanks to an abundance of leisure, retail and entertainment facilities within the neighbourhood, it is the ideal choice for residents seeking luxury living and a lifestyle that promotes wellbeing. Waala Elhalwany, who recently moved into Golf Promenade within DAMAC Hills, walks us

through her journey of choosing her new family home and tells us why this impressive property was her first choice. What factors sealed the deal when you were looking for your new home? “The first thing on my mind was my daughter, like is the case with any parent. The wellbeing and safety of our children is number one priority. When we started searching for homes, the facilities on offer in the neighbourhood were topmost on our list of factors to consider. It was important for us to have a park or a play area within the community so that the children could get together and enjoy their leisure time, all within the safety of a gated space. DAMAC Hills ticked all the boxes for us.” What made Dubai the best choice for an investment? “I have been living in Dubai since 2007 and honestly, this emirate was my first choice. It’s a wonderful place to live in.

Premiering now Tasked with bringing Hollywood to Dubai with its new development, DAMAC Properties‛ interior design team has set the bar high for glamorous living

For the first time in the region, residents and investors can own a Hollywood-inspired luxury apartment in the heart of Downtown Dubai for a taste of stateside glamour. Thanks to DAMAC Properties’ latest venture in collaboration with Paramount Hotels & Resorts, Dubai’s chic neighbourhood is now home to DAMAC Towers by Paramount Hotels & Resorts. Bringing a sense of Hollywood luxury to Dubai, the fourtower complex features over 1,200 residential units and 800 hotel rooms that pay tribute to the different eras of movie-making in its décor. While the Hollywood theme fits perfectly with the property developer’s definition of luxury – given that the US film industry has come to be associated with high fashion and unapologetic glamour over the years – it was the interior design team’s charge to breathe life into the concept. “What made the project special for us was the fact that it was a themed and branded property,” says the interior design team at DAMAC Properties. “With Hollywood as our main source of inspiration, we had to work around this concept while simultaneously infusing the DNA of DAMAC into this new establishment. “In addition to this, since the property is based in one of Dubai’s most elite neighbourhoods, we had to ensure everything was in keeping with the emirate’s affinity for five-star luxury. Yet, it couldn’t resemble anything that the UAE had seen before. In terms of the setting, colours and finishes, it had to stand out. With this in mind, the team got to work with the aim of giving guests a taste of fashionable living in an iconic neighbourhood.” When the project was first announced, all eyes were set on this new development taking shape in Downtown Dubai. Today, the complex stands proudly over the cityscape, 270 metres high, offering views over Business Bay. It features a blend of Dubai luxury with California cool to give guests a distinctive Hollywood studio feel. “When you step into a hotel, you would expect soothing whites and neutral tones, but this is not the look and feel we were going for with DAMAC Towers by Paramount Hotels & Resorts Dubai. For something more sophisticated with a vintage touch, a darker colour scheme was the better-suited choice. We wanted our customers to feel the glamour from the moment they walked in, which is why we took a detour from light and minimalist and opted for something more bold and striking,” the team adds. “We achieved this look and feel by infusing elements symbolising Hollywood wherever it f itted. For example, there is heavy use of mahogany and walnut wood, we have decorative elements on the headboard, scripts on the bathroom wall and other such sculptural features.

“For the full Hollywood experience, we named the hotel suites after classics such as The Great Gatsby and The Godfather. Here, you will find plenty of shiny surfaces throughout the décor that have been introduced to bring about that ambience of glamour. But at the same time, it’s not flashy. We’ve managed to find the right balance between soft and hard furnishings to deliver a truly luxurious setting. “Even the lobbies transport you to the land of glamour with a f loating staircase that has been designed like a f ilm reel. Vintage artwork, representing the dif ferent per iods of t he f i lm indust r y, ador ns t he wa l ls. “We’ve also used luxury furniture in the common areas to maintain our high standards. You will f ind special touches in the form of marble surfaces, leather cladding and f loating elements throughout the space.” Keeping long-term residency in mind, the interior design team also curated apartments within DAMAC Towers by Paramount Hotels & Resorts Dubai to cater for guests’ specific needs. “We wanted the apartments to be more relaxed, light and breathable so we used different colours. A pastel scheme is the palette of choice here with surprising accents of purple to keep up the element of glamour. References to Hollywood and luxury touches are still very much part of the design.” But for the guest, DAMAC Towers by Paramount Hotels & Resorts Dubai goes beyond its design. As the team rightly puts it: “The entire complex is like a small city within a city, where you have everything you need to experience the ultimate in luxury. “The property offers world-class facilities for leisure and entertainment such as the gym, pools, a cinema and an outdoor hub, perfect for the winter months. “There are exceptional dining venues on site. Amenities for the convenience of residents, such as a grocery store, are also available within the surrounds itself. And then there’s a spa for those looking to extend their downtime without stepping out of the property.” Even the food and beverage offering available on site has been carefully curated to present diners with cuisines from around the world. “We have Oriental, Asian, seafood and more with interiors designed to transport you to these culinary heartlands. In keeping with our theme, we also have a California-style restaurant. A few other outlets are set to open soon.” Families looking to move into their dream home, investors looking to add to their portfolio and vacationers looking for the ideal base to explore the city, will find the perfect fit in DAMAC Towers by Paramount Hotels & Resorts Dubai. “It’s a self-sufficient complex, where we have everything available in a limited area. And with its central location in Downtown Dubai, what more could you ask for?” 

Artistic perspective LuxLife delves into the world of interiors with key members of DAMAC Properties’ design team who enable the luxury living experience that the real estate developer is known for Investing in a new property often comes with its fair share of complicated procedures, which, for many, can be a daunting experience. Formalities, finances and floor plans aside, the look and feel of a new home is an equally important factor to consider. To give customers an insight into how an empty space can be transformed into their dream home, DAMAC Properties’ interior design team works tirelessly behind the scenes to bring apartments and villas to life, converting mere spaces into a welcoming abode for every member of the family. Their main task is to ensure that every new creation meets the standards of luxury synonymous with brand DAMAC. “Our primary goal is to deliver the most luxurious design possible. Yet, it is not about what we want but it is understanding what the client is looking for. We study market trends, talk to clients to fully learn more about their requirements and take all the inputs we receive to deliver luxury in style,” interior design team shares.

Thanks to expert leadership and team work, the designers at DAMAC Properties have won several awards for their innovative approach to interior design across projects such as Ocean Heights in Dubai, Al Jawharah in Jeddah and DAMAC Towers Riyad. “All DAMAC projects are success stories. More than 95 percent of our properties are designed in- house and this is a huge achievement. Every new home completed is a reward in itself,” the team adds. As effortless as the interior design team might make the process seem, there’s plenty that goes on beneath the surface to ensure DAMAC Properties delivers on its promise of luxury every single time. The team says that it all begins with an idea. The core design team is tasked with presenting artistic ideas suited to various properties within the portfolio, while the technical team brings these concepts to life.

INTERIOR DESIGN | THE BUSINESS END

The team explains that the journey towards bringing a space to life starts with a hand-drawn illustration, which they sketch themselves. At the heart of their operations is the ability to visualise a space like no one else and presenting their imagination on paper. “In Dubai, everywhere you go, there’s luxury in the details,” and this philosophy guides each and every creation the team brings to life. Once initial design ideas are in place, the technical team takes over to study the feasibility of the proposed designs. The primary design concerns all things aesthetic and then the technical work follows. The first task the technical team does is converting proposed sketches into an actionable vision that can be perfectly achieved by the right contractor. This is accomplished by running sketches through a software that converts them into technical drawings with measurements and specifications in order to assist contractors who will build these ideas. A major part of the technical team’s work also involves reviewing the materials needed for the vision to take shape. “When we look at a space, we have to immediately start thinking in technical terms. Researching the right materials for an apartment or villa is an important part of the process. We have a library of suppliers for references including sections for fabric, tiles, marble, wood and finishes. We then try to introduce these materials into our concept to see if they complement each other.” But the technical team coming into the picture doesn’t mean that core design team’s job is complete. “What we do is a continuous process. We are always thinking of new innovations and our ideas have to correspond with new technology. “If the design team envisions something, the technical minds have to find a solution for it and vice versa. It’s really teamwork. Together, we research and come up with solutions that make our designs possible. Sometimes, we have to reach a compromise. And if it still doesn’t fit, we change the concept altogether.” The technical designers’ work also enables the costing team at DAMAC Properties to arrive at a budget with the proposed design. And so, when all the boxes are ticked, other departments get involved to see their vision through to completion. “Of course, the work that we do complements every member’s skillsets to deliver DAMAC’s standard of luxury, but the whole team works together on these projects. We believe in unity in design and this concept shines through in every new space. No one can claim a design for himself, it’s team effort,” they conclude. 

The inside story New homeowner Osama Hamza Jalal Al Hazemi tells us about his personal experience with DAMAC Properties Buying a home is a big step. Whether you’re looking to make a local investment or are seeking international opportunities, the process takes a great deal of time and effort. With this in mind, DAMAC Properties works hand-in-hand with investors to guide them with their journey, right from the decision making stage through to the handover. For the customer service team, it’s all about creating positive experiences for the buyer. New homeowner Osama Hamza Jalal Al Hazemi couldn’t agree more. A resident of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Hazemi worked as a writer and presenter for MBC and other news channels. Today, he is one of the owners of the newspaper, Al Madina, published in the k ingdom. We spoke to Hazemi to find out about his journey to becoming the owner of a new home at DAMAC Towers by Paramount.

What made DAMAC Towers by Paramount the best choice when you were looking for a home in Dubai? “Its central location in Business Bay sealed the deal. But it’s also the facilities on offer within the property itself such as the majestic swimming pools, dining outlets that will soon open to the public and luxury transportation services on offer.” And why DAMAC Properties? “DAMAC is no small property developer, it is one of the biggest in the region with an international reputation. When you choose someone with the ability to develop big projects, rest assured you will get higher quality and better services.”

“DAMAC is no small property developer, it is one of the biggest in the region with an international reputation”

Why was Dubai your first choice for an international investment? “Dubai is competing with a host of modern metropolises around the globe. I always compare it to the USA. The nation, as a whole, has made tremendous progress in different fields and with the number of facilities available for a better lifestyle, it caters to a diverse set of the population. Dubai is an attractive destination for people from different nationalities to visit, make a life in and also invest in. In fact, it’s the smooth and transparent process of investing in Dubai that simplifies it all. Add to it the numerous property options available and you know it’s the ideal choice. For me, Dubai was not a random decision. Hailing from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, speaking the same language and being in close proximity to other GCC countries were all contributing factors.”

Tell us more about your experience as a buyer. Did you face any challenges? “I didn’t face any problems at all. DAMAC stays connected with you throughout the process. The team was constantly communicating with us and updating us from the moment we decided to invest until the handover. What also helped is constant updates on the company website with new details about the property.” What are the key factors to consider when international buyers make an investment in Dubai? “Buying a home gives you a stable life, even if you are a regular visitor to the country because the biggest struggle long-term travellers face is finding a place they can call home. When I decided to invest, my first priority was the services and facilities being offered by the property management team. It is also important to assess the space itself, the number of rooms and how well it will cater to the people living in the home.” 
