WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY

At Coppermine we are so very thankful for our staff members, instructors and coaches that help make us special. We appreciate our amazing families that support us in our classes, camps, clinics, and programs throughout the year. Thank you for allowing us to work with your children, to assist you in the fitness centers and coach your athletes on the fields. Throughout the holiday season we are especially grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community that we love so much!

We had so many successful fall happenings in the community with the October lacrosse and football clinics at St. Paul’s Schools and Gilman that our Coppermine kids had a blast participating in and we enjoyed seeing everyone at out first ever TrunkOr-Treat!

This December we have several exciting events taking place including Cascade Lights in Hampstead which is a great way to get in the holiday spirit. Soccer enthusiasts will be playing in The Canton Cup at Duburns from December 27-29 and we have several sports-specific clinics through the month of December! Be sure to check your email for This Month @ Coppermine for an exciting line up of activities every month.

We are beyond excited to share with you our 2023 Summer Camp offerings so keep an eye out for the catalog both online and in mailboxes soon to take advantage of the early discounts!

We wish you a wonderful holiday season filled with family, friends and good health & happiness and look forward to seeing you soon.

ARE YOU OUR NEXT COPPERMINER OF THE MONTH?

Every month, you, yes YOU, as part of our incredible Coppermine Community, have the opportunity to win a $100 Coppermine gift card! All you have to do is TAG us in your photos getting after it in our gyms, giving it your all on our club teams and/or bettering your skills in one of our many classes and workshops! It’s that simple. At the end of every month, we select one submission as our CopperMINER of the Month. Here are the winners for September and October and remember; if you didn’t win yet, you still can in future months!

Our September CopperMINER of the Month was Asher Smith! Asher is loving his Tiny Tumblers fall gymnastics class that he takes at the Fieldhouse every Saturday morn-

ing! We’re so happy that he’s a part of our Coppermine Community and his family is excited to use the gift card for soccer class in the spring!

Quinn loves being a part of her Coppermine Lacrosse Club team because her “teammates are like family and the coaches are always supportive!”

Congratulations to both of these CopperMINER of the Month winners and we can’t wait to see more photos in the coming months!

We had a BLAST at our inaugural Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday, October 29! You all packed the lots at Bare Hills and Pantherplex for a sweet evening filled with candy and fun!

This outdoor, family-friendly event was open to children of all ages. There were games, music, a costume contest, prizes and more! Leftover candy was donated to our partner for the event, Baltimore Hunger Project (BHP)! Be sure to read more about our November partnership with them in “The Community” section on page 12.

BALTIMORE HUNGER PROJECT

Coppermine has teamed up with Baltimore Hunger Project for October and November. Many of our locations have food donation bins where you can help support BHP’s mission and cause. Baltimore Hunger Project is dedicated to eliminating the growing problem of weekend childhood hunger by feeding bodies & minds.

BHP’s 8 most-wanted food items are: canned tuna, canned chicken, granola bars (crunchy or chewy), protein bars, single-serve cereal boxes, fruit snacks (single serving pouches), applesauce pouches (no cups please) & juice boxes! A HUGE thank you to BHP interns Margaret and Zoe who collected candy donations at our Trunk-or-Treat!

If you have any of these items, be sure to bring them to your nearest Coppermine location and drop them off with the front desk staff, or at the BHP tubs!

ULMAN FOUNDATION

Many in our club soccer community know Brock Yetso as the director of goalkeeping. Three of his children play on Coppermine Soccer Club teams and his wife is a part of the goalkeeping staff as well. However, the Yetso’s are not just a heavily involved Coppermine family. Brock Yetso runs the non-profit, Ulman Foundation. In 1996, Brock’s friend, Doug Ulman, was diagnosed with cancer while still in college. Frustrated by the lack of resources available for young adults affected by cancer, Doug and his family created The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (UCF).

In 2001, when Doug Ulman moved to work for another organization, Brock was named executive director. Brock helped to grow the organization and in 2020, UCF became Ulman Foundation. Through Ulman, Yetso and hundreds of volunteers raise money for cancer research, host holiday gift drives and host an annual Blue Jeans {& Bowties} Ball. To read more about Brock Yetso and Ulman Foundation, head to ulmanfoundation.org.

LACE UP EVENT

On Saturday, October 29, our Coppermine Community attended the 3rd Annual Brent A. Rosenberg Lace Up to End Child Abuse 5k and 1.5 mile Family Fun Walk at M&T Bank Stadium.

IN THE CLUB

Coppermine Gymnastics is beyond excited to intro duce their newest director, Bella Moskos! Here are some interesting things about her and her back ground with the sport:

Before I started coaching, I did gymnastics in Harford County for 14 years (1-14 years old) and at that same gym, I then, coached for 2 years. I joined Coppermine as the director with the intentions of making gymnastics classes as fun and educational as possible. When I was young, coming into practice felt like a safe space for me and that is exactly how I want every single participant to feel when they walk through the doors. A few points that I would like the gymnasts to take away from class is that

1. Its okay to make a mistake, you can always try again

2. It okay to feel discouraged but remember that you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it

3. Be kind and be yourself

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

During our FREE Clinic this September participants took advantage of the indoor clinic and getting to know the faster game, upperclassmen Majestx players helped out with coaches in instructing the basic skills and of course teamwork and fun games at the end.

All Coaches are excited about the indoor season and getting to work with new players and our returning players. We are steadily filling the tournament schedules and look forward to this upcoming season with a lot of Indoor, new friends and team bonding.

WINTER 2022-2023 SEASON TRYOUTS!

Majestx Field Hockey Club held its annual season tryouts earlier in November. Players demonstrated their talent and commitment to the game during two rigorous tryout sessions.

Our Winter season consists of 35+ indoor court practices, 8 sessions of sports performance training with EVOLVE trainers and 2-4 tournaments. Some tournaments could be added at an additional cost just to that specific team. Last year some of our teams participated in the Sunshine Showcase at ESPN World Wide of Sports in Orlando. We are looking forward to bringing our offerings to Timonium and expanding our Coppermine Family to include all ACAC members.” said Alex Jacobs, owner of Coppermine.

COPPERMINE FITNESS W

When it comes to training, we often focus on the “big” exercises that will help us build strength and muscle. But what about the smaller, everyday movements that are essential for our mobility and range of motion? One of my favorite movements is the Gorilla Squat. This lower body warm-up is perfect for those who want to improve the depth of their squat, as well as those who want to reduce tightness in the hips and legs.

How To Perform a Gorilla Squat

When performing the Gorilla Squat, it is important to keep your back straight and chest up. Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Slowly reach down toward your toes while keeping the knees straight. Once you reach your feet, place your hands (palms face-up) underneath your toes with a firm grip. Drive your elbows into the knees as you lower yourself into a deep squat. Hold this position for 2-3 seconds. Then lift your glutes back up to the starting position. Complete 2-4 sets for 10 repetitions. This motion should resemble how a gorilla sits in the wild.

Progression: The Gorilla Squat is a great way to get your blood flowing and your muscles warmed up before a workout. It can also be modified into a quad-dominant strength exercise. Perform two sets of 30 reps in less than one minute.

Regression: If you are having difficulty reaching your toes, bend the knees until you can grasp your toes. Continue to lift the glutes in an attempt to straighten the legs and knees. Slowly repeat the motion until you start to feel a stretch. Complete 2 sets for 10 reps.

FREE WEIGHTS VS. MACHINE WEIGHTS

Have you ever wondered whether free weights are more effective than machine weights? If so, you’re not alone. Instead of using machine weights, i.e. the Smith Machine, try using free weights, such as dumbbells. When using free weights you activate more muscles to help balance the lift and stabilize your body, which will lead to burning off more calories and building up strength more quickly. However, your form will become more important with free weights in order to do the workout safely and without injury. Try out the sample total body dumbbell workout below!

1. Dumbbell Sumo Squat: 4 sets of 15-20 reps, with 60 seconds rest between sets, working on low and slow reps. Squeeze the glutes at the top of every set.

2. Dumbbell Bench Press: 4 sets of 15-20 reps, with 60 seconds rest between sets. This will target your chest and triceps.

3. Dumbbell Row (1 arm): 4 sets of 15-20 reps per arm, with 60 seconds rest between sets. Make sure to keep your chest up and do not let the elbows flare out. A helpful trick is to look forward in the mirror instead of down at the floor.

4. Dumbbell Bicep Curl: 4 sets of 12-15 reps per arm, with 60 seconds rest between sets. Make sure to keep your chest up and straighten the elbows at the bottom of every rep, and not swing the weights to lift them.

5. Dumbbell Crunches: 4 sets of 10-15 reps, make sure to keep the abdominal muscles flexed and shoulders off the ground.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Meet AJ Larkin! It is AJ’s first year at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he is playing lacrosse. The team has a storied legacy, as they have won the national championship 11 times! AJ has trained with Jake Gibson, Director of Sports Performance, at our Evolve location in Baltimore for over 4 years and credits Jake for helping him in “every way possible” to get him to where he is today. AJ says he has been with Evolve from the beginning of his training journey, where he was taught everything from how to run correctly to how to power clean!

AJ would tell young athletes that “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” and “bettering yourself at all times will pay off in the long run.”

AJ has enjoyed his experience at the University of Maryland so far, especially working with the coaches, the competition and the culture that has come with playing there. He has learned the importance of applying their slogan “Be the Best” on the field and in everyday life!

We are excited to see all of the great things that AJ does and wish him luck during the upcoming lacrosse season and beyond!

BUILDING A CULTURE OF SUCCESS

THE ST. PAUL’S SCHOOLS IS A FAMILY OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS IN BALTIMORE COUNTY, MARYLAND.

Serving children from infancy through grade 12, their schools share a 120-acre campus, an Episcopal tradition and a focus on developing confident, well-balanced students who use their education and ethics to improve the world. At St. Paul’s, students benefit from learning in a small-school environment with the unparalleled opportunities that only a large campus can provide. Students of all ages feel safe to stretch their capabilities, uncovering the possibilities in themselves and the world around them. There are 1,400 students between their three schools; The Pre & Lower School, The School for Girls and The School for Boys. This past October, Coppermine and The St. Paul’s Schools partnered together to offer the community two engaging, high-energy clinics, one with The St. Paul’s School for Girls, the other with The St. Paul’s School for Boys.

St. Paul’s School for Girls fields 37 athletic teams throughout the year at the middle and upper school levels. The athletic philosophy at SPSG embodies the mission of the school which supports respect and integrity while encouraging students to be independent and

confident. Throughout the years, SPSG has won several championships in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM). Last year, their girls’ lacrosse team finished ranked as the #1 school in the entire country.

On Tuesday, October 11, our Coppermine Community girls got to learn from The St. Paul’s School for Girls elite coaching staff, consisting of Mary Gagnon, Melissa Diepold, and Deemer Class. Over 100 laxers showed up and ran through drills focused on defensive skills, cradling, shooting, passing, goalkeeping and even some simulated match play.

A week and a half later, The St. Paul’s School for Boys hosted a clinic of its own. St. Paul’s School for Boys fields 50 teams in 14 different sports. Their program provides both the opportunity for elite athletes to compete at the highest levels and a place for every student. On Sunday, October 22, the Coppermine Community got to learn firsthand from The St. Paul’s School for Boys well-established football players and coaching staff through a Football Skills Booster. Participants bettered their football skills in a fun and high-energy environment, where they worked on ladder and box drills, agility, and route running.

DEVELOPING GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP

For the last 177 years, Calvert Hall has provided a Catholic college preparatory education in the Lasallian tradition. They offer 28 different advanced placement classes, over 1,000 individualized schedules, 40 different MIAA athletic teams, 60+ clubs and activities and 100% of their student body are involved in retreats or community service.

Calvert Hall College believes that participation in athletics, both as a player and as a spectator, is an integral part of the student’s educational experience. The athletic program teaches such skills and values as the ability to think and function as a member of a team and develop sportsmanship. The benefits of a healthy body, self-discipline, emotional maturity, respect for others and the importance of a system of morals are fostered through competition.

Physical, mental and emotional development are the drivers for the experiences that Calvert Hall Athlet-

ics provides. The element of competition and winning, though it exists, is controlled in that it does not determine the nature of their program. Students are stimulated to win, but the principles of good sportsmanship prevail at all times to enhance the educational values of the contest. There are 19 sports offered at CHC, 40 F/S, JV and Varsity teams who have combined to win 189 all-time conference championships.

FOSTERING A LOVE OF SPORTS AND WELLNESS

At Garrison Forest School (GFS), an all-girls K-12 school with a coed preschool and a national and international boarding program in Owings Mills, students not only hone their athletic skills but learn teamwork, empathy, leadership and integrity.

Empowering students to achieve their fullest potential and live lives of purpose has been the core of GFS since 1910. Their mission has been to prepare young women for a rewarding college experience and for a purposeful life well beyond. Guided by the GFS motto, Esse Quam Videri - To Be Rather Than To Seem - their curricular and co-curricular programs balance exceedingly high standards within a welcoming, spirited atmosphere. Students flourish intellectually, individually and athletically. Girls can find their voice. Discover their passions. And embrace their potential.

Each student is guided on her individual path to success through an educational journey that includes exploring academic interests, finding their voice and developing leadership skills. Often, an important component of that journey is joining the robust and supportive athletic community as a Garrison Forest Grizzly student-athlete.

Garrison Forest teams have won over 10 league and season championship titles combined in the last 5 years, with many of their student-athletes moving on to compete in top-tier athletic collegiate programs across the nation.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Did you know that regular laundry detergent may not be able to penetrate synthetic fabrics? That’s why Coppermine has partnered with HEX Performance to offer our community 20% off your first order online with code COPPERMINE20!

HEX IS CLEAR, POURS LIKE WATER, IS BIODEGRADABLE

AND MOST-IMPORTANTLY, IS PLANET-FRIENDLY.

Founded by Drew Westervelt, a former professional lacrosse player, in 2010, HEX was born out of necessity. Drew had experienced one too many close and gross encounters with bacteria thanks to germ-infested turf. He began researching the chemistry of keeping artificial grass clean with the intent of developing a product to help. This research led him to realize that the material in turf and synthetic fabrics are very similar in their makeup.

This realization inspired Drew to find a way to rid synthetic fabrics and athletic clothing of harmful bacteria and improve the lifespan of athletic gear.

The formula for their products are built around the HEX molecule to clean and protect activewear in ways traditional detergent cannot, prolonging the life of your clothes with each wash. HEX is clear, pours like water, is biodegradable and most-importantly, is planet-friendly.

HEX offers a variety of products including detergents, antibacterial fabric protectors, fabric conditioners, wet dryer sheets, sprays, gear care & bundles, this way you can even clean some of your “uncleanables!” “Uncleanables” are any objects that don’t fit in your washing machine OR anything you don’t have time to give a good spin. HEX has listed these 10 items as some of the most “uncleanable” objects; gym bags, blankets, jackets, carpets, pet beds, camping gear, shoes, exercise balls, exercise equipment &

yoga/bath mats. With HEX’s unique sprays, you can have these items smelling cleaner and living longer!

Want to learn more about HEX? On January 7, they will be taking over The Mine! HEX will be on-site all day to answer your questions about their organization and products. They will also be handing out FREE samples, sponsoring a happy hour with light food and fare and dancing with our LIVE DJ! You can bring a friend to any of your classes that day for FREE to experience the magic that is HEX Performance!
