100 years ago, the Rainbow Rest Home opened on what is now Cordillera Ranch, providing fresh air and respite for those with lung ailments. Today, the same restorative properties attract homeowners to the resort-style community in the beautiful Hill Country.

Kids and their parents make up the two fastest growth groups in the centuries-old game of tennis, playing together, sharing their enthusiasm and passing the sport through generations for a treasured family activity.

Swim Club activities go beyond splashing around, although that’s fun, too! With poolside dining and cocktails, kids’ games, aquatic fitness classes, swimming lessons, family movie nights and special events, it’s easy to plan your summer at the pool.

Health is always on our minds. Perhaps more so recently than at any time in our lives. A balance of physical and mental health is important and makes a difference in a life well lived. Taking advantage of the Cordillera Ranch lifestyle does so much to accomplish both for lifelong independence. Our community and Clubs are based upon the activities enjoyed by its founding families. The healthful and restorative qualities of these activities prove invaluable for our daily lives. Watch the sun rise during a vigorous workout at the Fitness Center. Enjoy an early day match on the courts. Take in the beautiful vistas, rolling terrain and natural rock outcroppings of the championship golf course. Relish the special bond with your horse on a morning ride at the Equestrian Center. Kayak the Guadalupe River and enjoy a lazy float through canopies of towering Cypress. Savor a glass of wine and a delicacy from our Fit Menu while taking in the panoramic view from the Twin Sisters patio. All contribute to our total well-being and are just a few examples of why we choose to live in this beautiful community. To live a better life. The history of the restorative qualities of this place are shared in this issue of Cordillera Ranch Living. We also feature Lisa and Robert Bowling and learn about the interests that bring them peace along with their transformative medical practice. And as with every issue, enjoy photos and stories of family and friends experiencing countless activities. Over the years, our corner of the world has proven to be a sanctuary. It’s poised to provide the same as we stand on the precipice of new trials and tribulations. Let’s cherish our community, its healthful qualities and the values of its people in this greatest place, in this greatest state of this greatest country. Happy Independence Day!

BACK AT THE RANCH

HEALING repeats itself at HISTORY Cordillera Ranch,

1 00 10 0 Y E A RS L AT E R It has been said that history repeats itself, and Cordillera Ranch may be living proof. Exactly 100 years ago when World War I had just concluded, the Boerne area and the Texas Hill Country were known for their rest homes and health resorts. The area was an escape used for recuperation from tuberculosis and veterans’ lung issues from exposure to poisonous gas and the Spanish Flu Pandemic. In 1920, Henry Graham opened the Rainbow Rest Home, a picturesque property overlooking the Guadalupe River, which served as a rest home and recreational retreat.

16 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

By Charlie Hill and Barry Denton

Through the years, the land’s owners shared in the vision and values of their predecessors and continued with the “Rainbow Rest” name. They considered it a “quiet, peaceful place to live” and “paradise on Earth.” By mid-century, J. Ray McDermott transformed the Rainbow Rest Home into the ranch headquarters for the sprawling 7,000+ acres known as the Elmax Ranch. This second home and escape for weekends, holidays and summer vacations was a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the dense, urban areas. In the late 1990s, a portion of the Elmax Ranch began to evolve into its newest phase of healthy living in the form of a master-planned community named Cordillera Ranch. Today,

Renovated from the original Rainbow Rest Home, the Elmax Ranch headquarters served as the McDermott family’s second home and relaxing retreat for more than thirty years.

Cordillera Ranch has become a resort-style community that’s a refuge from the impacts of this generation’s lung ailment, the Coronavirus. Cordillera Ranch offers the same restorative qualities of yesteryear, but re-envisioned with resort-style living, spacious sprawling acreage and innovative amenities founded upon the Hill Country’s treasured outdoors. The community epitomizes social distancing, escape from large populations and active lifestyles. The difference is that today, more than 800 families that call it home (or a weekend home) can enjoy the fresh air, lakes, trails and refreshing Guadalupe River, along with The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch’s Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. For fami-

lies with kids out of school for a five-month summer break, there has been no better place to keep them entertained and active. ”During this unprecedented time, we are so thankful to be in Cordillera Ranch where our three kids and two dogs can enjoy not only a big yard and pool, but have access to the Guadalupe River and Swede Creek to play, fish and explore within walking distance from our home,” says Randy and Charity Rolfs. “We are hopeful this time will be remembered for all of the outdoor adventures and staying safe and healthy in Cordillera Ranch. We are also thankful for the pivot the Club did in offering delivery and highly sought-after grocery items. We couldn’t be in a better place to spend time as a family waiting for this ordeal to pass than Cordillera Ranch.” While the community, fortunately, hasn’t had to deal with a severe local outbreak, many homeowners such as Paul Robishaw and his family have found that activities at Cordillera Ranch have forged life-long positive memories in an otherwise unpleasant era. “Being able to get out to Cordillera Ranch is always a welcome escape from Houston, but it was even more so during the recent pandemic,” the family noted. “Whether fishing the Guadalupe or walking nine holes on the golf course, our boys spent more time together than they have in a long time. The six weeks we spent in Boerne definitely brought our family closer and we were able to make some great memories.” The Ranch’s refreshingly clear air, twinkling starry skies, cool spring-fed Guadalupe River and abundant open spaces have served as a place to quarantine with freedom unavailable in cities, and as a place to reconnect and forge new bonds with family. Through this disruptive time in our history, residents of Cordillera Ranch have re-discovered the area’s healing effects as did those visiting the Rainbow Rest Home a century ago. Life IS better OUT here.

STAFF PROFILE

KEITH BURLETTE

Director of Facilities 361.332.0275 kburlette@cordilleraranch.com FAMILY MEMBERS: Susan Wardle and Russell Burlette HOMETOWN: Seabrook, Texas HOW DID YOU BECOME EMPLOYED AT THE CLUBS OF CORDILLERA RANCH? I had the opportunity to move my family from Corpus Christi to Boerne in order to be closer to extended family. Shortly after arriving, I was encouraged to learn about Cordillera Ranch during my job search. I replied to an opportunity on Indeed, interviewed with Joe Davis and found a wonderful spot to get to work in the Maintenance Department. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT CORDILLERA RANCH? Solving new problems and learning new things every day really makes this job interesting. There are so many different moving parts and projects going on all the time. I enjoy the challenge in keeping everything running smoothly! WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR THE CLUBS? I think that every bit of my work history has helped prepare me for this position: working in the technical side of commercial security taught me a lot about alarms, camera systems and troubleshooting; experience in automotive repair provided me with a good basis for understanding mechanical issues; 10 years of experience in Food & Beverage has given me the ability to really put people and service first; and lastly, I was fortunate enough to build and manage my own establishment in Corpus — the eventual sale of which allowed me to move to the next stage of my career here at Cordillera Ranch. WHAT MAKES YOUR COLLEAGUES AN ASSET TO THE CLUBS? My team is so crucial to every part of Cordillera Ranch. We all have our own jobs and responsibilities but being a small department with such a wide range of duties makes working together as a team a must. Whether it was getting ready to open the new Georg building at the Lodges or opening the pool for the season, I work with a great team and we are always looking out for each other. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE? Being considered for and receiving this Director of Facilities position. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE? Learning how to perform the Director of Facilities role! It was a

32 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

challenge to juggle the new responsibilities, protocols, stay on top of the needs of the Club and fill our team with people who really contribute to our department’s success. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? My time off is very similar to my time at work. I enjoy building things, home improvement projects and anything mechanical. My dad kept an old rifle from his brother and recently passed it down to me. It had spent the last 30 years in his attic and was in terrible condition but its value is completely sentimental so I decided to restore it — everything from polishing/bluing the barrel to refinishing the stock. I was able to take it back to my dad and shoot it for the first time since his brother had. I would like to build on that experience and turn it into a new hobby. MOST MEANINGFUL PERSONAL EXPERIENCE? Watching my son learn how to do new things — it was really great when he realized how his bicycle works! Growing up, I never got involved in any kind of school sports. Instead, I lived on my bike. It became a passion and part of my identity all the way through high school. The day that we went from pushing him down the sidewalk, to him taking off on his own and enjoying it so much was a very special day for me.

LIFE AND WORK

AT CORDILLERA RANCH By Cheryl Van Tuyl Jividen :: Photography by Mark Humphries

Dr. Robert and Lisa Bowling Invest in Community With a laugh, Lisa Bowling says, “I am realizing that in the five-plus years we have lived here, we have lived in three homes and have owned four homes. I had never really stopped to add it up! And ... we are not done yet! Always on the lookout for another one!” For Lisa and her Port Arthur high school sweetheart husband Robert, it’s a shared hobby, adding, “We love anything real estate-related: building homes, remodeling and flipping homes. We love to stay busy with projects.” CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 35

The couple wed the same year they both graduated from Lamar University — he with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology and she with a BS in Elementary Education. Robert fulfilled a family legacy by receiving an advanced degree in Osteopathic Medicine, starting a family practice and becoming a 4th generation family physician. Lisa taught elementary school while Robert was in medical school, then stayed home to raise their three daughters, at which time she got her Master’s in educational counseling, worked as a realtor and had a small furniture-painting business. In Port Neches, close to their hometown, they planted roots and first got the real estate bug. “We did several homes while living in Port Neches. It is funny because we built our first home there in 1988 and lived there for about 20 years while raising our family. We loved the stability of staying in one place for our daughters. However, in 2007 when our last daughter left for college, we started our real estate hobby. We have built, remodeled, lived in and flipped at least six homes since then. Both Robert and I are incredibly involved in these projects,” says Lisa. When daughter, Bailey, was at school at the University of Texas San Antonio, she heard about Cordillera Ranch from a friend and suggested it to her parents. The timing was ideal. “After living, working and raising a family, we were ready for a new adventure,” says Robert, “Looking toward a future life as empty nesters, as grandparents and looking forward to a change from the coastal flatlands, the Texas Hill Country looked like the place.” Lisa agrees, “We fell in love with the views and the lifestyle Cordillera Ranch provided. It seemed to be a great fit and balance for Robert who wanted some space and land and an avenue for me to meet people. It’s also a perfect mix of having time just as a couple but also lots of opportunities to make friends and be active with others.” The Bowlings chose Garner Homes to build their first Cordillera Ranch home and moved into it in 2014. For the first year, Robert commuted back and forth to work at his Port Neches medical practice. Though she thought she would accompany him often on those work visits,

36 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

Lisa says she was happily distracted, “I spent time getting established in the Hill Country and becoming acquainted with the neighborhood and the wonderful neighbors. Because of all the activity opportunity at the Ranch and getting busy immediately, I only went a couple of times. It was evident our new life in Cordillera Ranch would be a good and full one!” Full, but there was still room for their passion of real estate. Two-and-a-half years later they sold the house and moved into a rental property in Cordillera Ranch while they had Garner build yet another home, moving into it in 2018. They built the second home right next door to the first home. “On Greystone Point, we are on the edge of Cordillera Ranch property and look out over a gorgeous view with miles of beautiful ranch land and it’s one of the best views on the Ranch. Not willing to give up that scenic backdrop, the lot next door seemed to be the perfect spot for the second home. It was a great location for family to gather with lots of activities in the Hill Country area for all of us,” says Lisa. Additionally, she says, “Cordillera Ranch Summer Camps for the grandchildren were a definite plus. We knew it would be a place that the family would love to come and visit.” The home affords plenty of fun with their Labrador, Gracie, who has accompanied Robert on many hunting trips, Labradoodle, Miley, and visiting family. Oldest daughter, Brooke Bowling Hall, is the family’s 5th generation family physician, living in North Richland Hills with children Luke and Emma. Their middle daughter, Blaire Bowling Hickman, is an attorney and her husband Christopher is the VP of Finance for Crown Castle. They live in Alpharetta, Georgia with children Preston and Ellen and are expecting another son in October. And youngest daughter, Bailey Bowling Wehe, is a registered nurse at Methodist Boerne Emergency Center and is currently in Nurse Practitioner School. Her husband, Kevin, is a golf coach and world history teacher at his alma mater Smithson Valley High School. They live in Spring Branch with toddler daughter, Brooklyn, and newborn son, Bryson. Lisa has the delightful pleasure of having the children with her once a week, “Because of their ages, we mostly stay home and play, do crafts, read and snuggle. But we also love the Cordillera Ranch park and taking walks outside. We swim in our pool, but as they get older, we will take them to the Club pool. Some of our other older grandkids have enjoyed the Ranch Summer Camps, and the Memorial Day Pool Party is always an annual family event for our entire family to attend. This year will be our first year to miss it because of the quarantine and not all our family was able to be here. However, we hope to be back strong next year!”

A few years ago, the Bowling’s bought their first “older” home built in the early 2000s in Cordillera Ranch. We purchased it together with another resident couple, Mark and Marcia Pratt. The four of us remodeled and updated it. We leased it for a couple of years then sold it. This March we just purchased another older home that we remodeled and updated. It kept us very busy during the quarantine. Our first tenants moved in this June. Since moving to Boerne, we have only been investing in Cordillera Ranch properties. We stay in this community because we always know we have a safe and sound investment, and when we use it for rental property, we know the folks who live out here will be a good match and we know we will have high-end renters.” Their hobby is a team effort, and Lisa and Robert each have their own role, “I tease Robert that I am the brains and he is the laborer! It’s not really meant to be that way but as it works out, I love the planning, deciding what to remodel or update, picking and ordering all the selections such as paint colors, lighting, hardware or whatever is needed. Robert is truly the worker. He can do it all from hanging fans, new lights, hanging shades, repairing and/or building anything needed. He has tiled a patio, but his favorite part is the yard and landscaping. When the yards are overgrown, he totally redoes the landscaping, pulling out the old and redoing the sprinkler system, planting new plants, grass and topping with fresh mulch. I have never seen anyone work as hard as he does. He spends hours and hours in the yard. I am usually the cleaning crew as we finish things. We really

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 37

make a great team. We work hard but love it all!” says Lisa. When not hosting family, the Bowlings enjoy Cordillera’s amenities and activities. They kayak on the river and like hiking the many trails on the Ranch. They participate in Couples Bible Study and Wine Club, and have hosted these groups in their home several times. Robert, who is in the Men’s Group, is an outdoorsman and avid hunter who especially appreciates duck hunting. He says, “I’ve enjoyed hunting trips and being on a lease with Cordillera Ranch Outfitter Shane Reynolds. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Cordillera Ranch Devils River Trip.” First introduced to tennis with the Cordillera Ranch Net Chix, Lisa says she was “immediately hooked.” She now spends most mornings on the tennis court playing with other women residents. She also plays for the Cordillera Ranch Team in the United States Tennis Association. Robert and Lisa have made lasting friendships. Lisa explains,

38 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

“’We are just amazed at the fine friends that have been made in the few years since moving here. It feels like they have been lifelong friends and strong relationships were established very quickly. Such a wonderful group of successful but down-to-earth individuals. People seem to have their priorities in order with God, family, friends and relationships being most important. The blessing of material things is nice but not the most important. That is unique and refreshing in many ways! We both feel very blessed to be living the good life! Cordillera Ranch is truly a dream come true.” It is those friendships and people that have inspired Robert to open his medical practice in Bergheim and serve the community they love. Robert is passionate about his 35-year vocation, saying, “I love my job working in medicine and helping others with their health. This was instilled in me at an early age with my aunt, grandfather and father all being family physicians.” After moving to Boerne, Robert has had his office

in San Antonio for the last five years. His dream has been to get back to Boerne — closer to home and Cordillera Ranch — to take care of the neighbors and friends he has come to love. Opening in July, Robert’s new office is on Highway 46, just behind the former Bergheim General Store. Fitting for the real estate hobbyists, Lisa says, “The practice will be located in a darling old farmhouse that is over 100 years old. It is charming, quirky and full of personality! We were lucky to stumble on it. It’s literally across the street from Cordillera Ranch!” Its not just a change of place — the business will be different as well. Robert will be continuing care for his Cordillera Ranch patients and others with a Direct Primary Care practice that is VIP/

Concierge-based. Says Robert, “The focus will be back on the patient the way medicine is supposed to be. I’ll accept fewer patients than in a normal traditional insurance-driven medical practice, therefore, having the time needed to fully address and take care of whatever needs the patient may have.” That format includes round-the-clock access to him, same day visits and even house calls as needed. Lisa, who will be managing the office side of the business, says it’s all exhilarating, “We are both very busy people, type A, energetic and on the move. Unlike most people, we enjoy change. We are excited for the new and different. It keeps life interesting!”

GOLF

A RESURGENCE IN

GOLF By Corey Roberson :: Photography by Terry Vine

Golf has always been a passion for me. I grew up around the game as my dad was the Head Professional and General Manager at our local club in my hometown. I’ve always been drawn to the game; it’s part of my career and it’s something I can enjoy with my wife, Colleen, who also grew up around the game. Golf means something to all of us and I think we can all fall into one or more of the following categories: • Social Golfer — Players who enjoy the social aspect of the game. Score is less important than spending time with friends and meeting new people. • Competitive Golfer — Players know exactly what they are shooting throughout the round. They likely enjoy tournament play and/or a friendly wager with buddies. • Grinder — Players who are focused on improving their skills, are typically curious about the swing and strive to see progress. That progress may come from new clubs, a new teacher or the latest training aid. • Distraction/Escape — For these players, the game provides a distraction from their daily life. The game allows them to be outside and provides a way to recharge their internal batteries. Parts of my passion for the game lie in each of these categories. We’ve seen a few interesting trends in play at Cordillera Ranch, across the state of Texas and nationwide in response to COVID-19. In short, a lot of people are being reminded of what they love about the game and some are discovering it for the first time. Golf is one of the few sports you can play outside and with friends while following preventive guidelines — this appeals nicely to the social and distraction golfers. During quarantine, golf is a great escape from the house and a way to safely be around friends. For the avid golfers who fall in the competitive or grinder categories, they have had more time on their hands to play. Normally, they’d be in the office all week and chasing their kids on the weekend. Instead, they’ve been working from home and all the baseball games, dance competitions and karate classes have been canceled. At our Club, we’ve seen a significant uptick in traffic and demand for the golf course. For example, we eliminated the

40 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

rental of our cart fleet for four weeks in response to COVID-19 and estimated it would cut our rounds in half. To our surprise, on busy days we would still reach 125 rounds where a normal busy day was 155 rounds. To play, golfers either had to walk or own a private cart. In those four weeks, 61% of our rounds were walking and 25% of total rounds were for 9-holes or less. Normally, we average 8% walkers and 17% as 9-holes or less. The most interesting thing to me was how many people said they enjoyed walking. Many of those people have never walked a round at Cordillera Ranch and normally wouldn’t consider it as an option. Not only were people able to enjoy the game, they were getting some good exercise. Many of the 9-hole rounds were played by fringe golfers — people who play less than one time per month. We’ve also seen an influx due to the nature and location of our community. A portion of our membership has a primary residence in another city because they are still working or haven’t finished building their home in Cordillera. During the times of quarantine, many of those members fled the heavily populated cities to enjoy the benefits of our Texas Hill Country community. Essentially, more Club members were in town, working from home and looking for reasons to get out of the house. I’ve talked to a lot of other golf pros in our state and nationally and the common comment is, “we haven’t ever seen this much traffic.” We all acknowledge the flood of players will slow as we progress to a new normal, but I think many will figure out a way to fit golf into their lives permanently. There are so many ways to enjoy the game, it brings people together and it’s played outside. That checks a lot of boxes for many people. Places like Top Golf are phenomenal for introducing the game in a comfortable and fun environment, but a small percentage of their patrons will turn into frequent golfers. There’s nothing wrong with that and I firmly believe they are growing the game in a positive way. What’s been cool to see during quarantine is how many fringe and lapsed golfers are finding the game in a new way or being reminded of why they used to play. The effect is going to be lasting for the future of the game. It will be exciting to see the long-term impact as people are re-discovering which categories they fall into. In the Junior Club Championship, we had three players competing in the 13 & Under division that was contested over 36 holes. Jaxon Baize claimed the championship by besting Tommy Turturro and Harlen Mangum. In the 14 & Over division, there were eight juniors battling for their name on the rock in the Champions’ Gallery. Zach Heffernan had a 4-shot lead through 18-holes and extended that lead to 6 through the front 9 on Sunday. Jacob King made a run on the back 9 with birdies on 14, 15 and 17 which brought Heffernan’s lead down to 3 coming up the 18th fairway. It wasn’t enough to catch Heffernan who finished with a birdie on the 36th hole for a 4-shot win in his third straight Junior Club Championship victory. Aiden Leer finished 3rd with rounds of 76-74.

The Senior Club Championship was contested in conjunction with the Junior Club Championship. In the Senior Division, 37 men competed for the honor of having their name engraved in the Champions’ Gallery. Marc MacAluso ran away with the net competition shooting net rounds of 66-69 for a 9-under par 135 besting Jeff Smith and Steve Wade by 7 shots. In the gross competition, David Cottrell came out of the gates hot with a round of 75 to sleep on a 1-shot lead over Nick Vanderpool. Steve Wade, Barry Harkness and John Long all fired a first round 77. The front 9 on Sunday narrowed the championship down to Vanderpool and Long who traded blows coming down the stretch. They were tied coming up the 18th fairway where Vanderpool missed his approach short left. Long answered by stuffing a wedge to about three feet. TENNIS

A SPORT FOR LIFE AND FAMILY

at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Tennis Club

By Joe De Luna :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle

The history of tennis most similar to our modern game dates back to the 1500s. It was a game for royalty during the 1800s and it made its way into the 1930s and 40s as a growing global sports interest despite WWII. By the 1970s and 80s, with expansive television and media coverage, tennis was at a Golden Age. With icons like Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors that helped tennis to flourish, it was at an all-time high in popularity. On the women’s side, Billy Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Tracy Austin were an amazing influence on women’s tennis and tennis overall during that time. 46 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

We move forward into the 2000s and experience a tennis Renaissance, as some of the greatest players and champions the tennis world has ever seen have emerged. Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic have dominated men’s tennis for almost two decades. We won’t forget Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi as two amazing American players prior to the 2000s, among others. Today’s game is as strong as ever. When we talk about tennis, we don’t only focus on the professionals. We have to talk about how tennis is a sport that grows every year. While not by a huge percentage, there has been growth in participation annually for the last ten or so years. The biggest growth each year is in youth tennis. This a great sign for the future because when you start as a youth, there is a good chance that you will continue to play with some frequency for the rest of your life. It’s no wonder tennis is known as a sport for a lifetime. The second highest growth group annually is adults over 45 years old. What this

means is that tennis can be passed from generation to generation as these two groups annually show the most growth and participation. This is when the family aspect is introduced. My parents introduced me to tennis when I was young after they started playing with friends. It’s a great trend for families as parents can share the game with their children and they can play as a family for years to come. We see a lot of this at the Tennis Club at Cordillera Ranch. It is so great to know that these children will continue to play and then pass the sport on to their children. With this evidence, it shows that tennis popularity is here to stay and tennis is a true sport for life and family. Joe De Luna is the Director of Tennis at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. WELLNESS

GETTING BACK on TRACK By Jane Riley

Have you noticed that your fitness level has decreased over the past month or so? You can halt the dreaded “de-training effect” that ensues even after just two weeks of missing your regular workouts. Skipping a few days of workouts is sometimes a good thing, just to give your body a little rest. However, because your aerobic capacity is one of the first aspects of fitness to show a decline in performance, the heart’s lessened ability to pump blood effectively is noticeable even after 10-12 days of inactivity. Strength is more resistant to the de-training effect, but after a month, the muscles start to atrophy and become marbled in fat. Muscle detraining will depend on your age, your sex and your starting muscle mass. Here’s how to strategically get back into your fitness routine if you have opted to “wait until the Fitness Center opens again.” The three principle components of any strategic exercise program are flexibility, cardiovascular exercise and resistance training. Begin with flexibility exercises, add in cardio exercises and slowly build your strength exercise capacity back up. It is always important to start with an extended warm-up and cool-down, to prepare your body for work and to return your body to pre-work status, but especially so after a time of inactivity. Don’t overdo it. If you were exercising rigorously earlier this year and have let that go, you will need to retrace your steps before you can go full-on again. A low intensity workout for the first few workouts is important to re-introduce your body to activity. After a week, you can begin to ramp up your intensity as long as you are still maintaining good form in your exercises. Your body responds to consistency over time, so your results will come back much faster if you maintain a regular pattern and fre-

quency of exercise. Rest days are important to schedule, as well. You may be tempted to make up for lost time, but your body needs at least one day a week to rest, repair and recuperate. It can be intimidating to get back into shape after time off. This is an opportunity for careful re-entry into your fitness routine, using progression and building slowly back up to your prior level of fitness. Your time away from fitness likely involved a lot of sitting (be honest!), which causes weakness in the posterior kinetic chain. The muscles of the posterior chain are important in everyday activities, as well as keeping your spine erect when you are sitting. It is imperative that you work the core, and activate the muscles through your glutes and hamstrings. We have many classes that will help you work this region. You might try Sets and Reps, Pilates or Yoga as you ease your way back into shape, followed by our seasonal classes and Aquafit. You might also consider personal training as you come back to the Fitness Center. So, let’s get started! The Fitness Center is open, you can view the Group Exercise Calendar on The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch website or schedule a personal trainer for one-on-one sessions. H ORSING A ROUND By Katy Burbank :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle

As a kid, not much can beat a summer day full of riding horses, playing games and spending time with friends. Going home exhausted after a day jam-packed with fun and sunshine is one of the best feelings in the world. The Equestrian Center’s horse camps will give your little rider that sense of freedom found only in summertime and in riding horses. Our horse camps cater to all ages and experience levels. Whether we have beginners or “been-there-done-that” riders, we always teach and remind our campers of the fundamentals of horsemanship and safety. Your camper will learn how to safely approach, groom and tack a horse. Throughout camp, each cowboy and cowgirl will learn how to ask the horse to walk, stop, turn each direction and navigate through a pre-set obstacle course. Our instructors have spent countless hours working with children and horses, so they know when a rider needs to be led or when to let them completely take the reins and trot off alone. We strive to safely push our riders to new limits every day. In addition to hours spent in the saddle, campers will learn about what it takes to properly care for a horse. They will learn all kinds of fun facts about horses and their behavior that will make them feel like equine experts. To cool off, our campers will spend time making theme-related crafts or playing water games. Often, a pony will appear that wants to be painted from mane to hoof by the kiddos.

54 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

On the last day, campers take all of the horsemanship skills they have acquired throughout the week and hit the trail. It is always a huge favorite! Campers love our trail rides because they are both exciting and relaxing. They get to see new terrain out in the woods, and it is a place for their imaginations to run wild. Our campers typically end up with two major things by the end of our week: first, a better knowledge of horses and riding, and second, new buddies. We have seen many friendships come out of our camps. We split our campers into groups to maximize riding time, and these smaller groups allow children to get to know each other better as they work together throughout camp. Not only are camps offered during the summer, but we host camps when the kids are out of school for Spring Break, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Camps are a great way to decide if your camper really loves riding. If you have a child with that inevitable love of horses running through their veins, we highly recommend lessons. The Equestrian Center offers both English and western horseback riding lessons by some of the best instructors around. We also have a new show team, so if your child is looking for a competitive activity that will teach them responsibility, perseverance and poise while having fun, come talk to us! All of our current show team members started out with camps and lessons.

If you have never been out, come visit us at the Equestrian Center. We provide a peaceful and quiet atmosphere on the west end of the Ranch. In addition to children’s programming, we also offer adult lessons and trail rides for our members and their guests. We have full boarding and pasture boarding with access to our arena, round pen and trails. We also offer training services for our members’ horses and will assist you with finding the right horse for your family if you ever consider buying or leasing your own horse. Ride on! CELLAR CLUB

FROM WINE AND BEYOND… By Jeffrey Cohen

Greetings to everybody! It has been great seeing some of your faces as members are branching back out to the Club. We are excited to see you all again as we work through this new state of “norm.” I recently had the pleasure to welcome a Wine Owner here to the Club. That certainly hasn’t happened for a good while. During this time, I was introduced to a wonderful rosé which has been on fire ever since I brought it in. I want to spend a little time letting you get to know Casey Barber. Casey is a native Texan and a young mother of three that was working in the medical field. She traveled to France and fell in love with Provence and the rosé scene. So much so, that she started her own wine brand called Rose Gold. She came back to the Club just last week and mingled with many. She has a vivacious personality and really kicked off her wine with stories and a lot of flare. It was neat to see non-rosé drinkers trying and loving her wine. Although many will say that rosé is a summer wine, it is hot here a good portion of the year. So, the next time you are in, ask for a taste of rosé and maybe, just maybe, Casey will be back and pour it for you herself. You, too, will fall in love! For more information about Rose Gold, visit www.rosegoldwine.com. As I finish off, I would encourage all of you to be watching your emails closely as we will be working on bringing Wine Dinners back into some sort of routine. Many are still not traveling, but we will find wineries that will. See you at the Club! Jeffrey Cohen is the Wine Specialist at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at jcohen@cordilleraranch.com or 210.677.9234.

SCHOOL DAYS

EDUCATION

IS BETTER OUT HERE! By Robert Rodriquez Cordillera Ranch boasts that “Life is Better OUT Here.” As a community offering resort-style living, sprawling acreage and an innovative, multi-club concept brimming with outdoor activities, today more than ever it epitomizes a lifestyle outside the mainstream. But that appreciation for open space, solitude, nature and getting back to a simpler lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice, especially when it comes to education. When families search for their next home, the school district is always important. And yet another benefit of living at Cordillera Ranch is that the entire community sits within the Boerne Independent School District boundaries. Consisting of 12 campuses and serving more than 9,600 students in Kendall County and parts of Bexar County, the Boerne ISD is known for its academic excellence and ranks among the most highly regarded school districts in the state of Texas. The Texas Education Agency has bestowed its coveted “A” rating to Boerne ISD for the past two school years. The district was also named to the AP District Honor Roll by the U.S. College Board and received a Best Communities for Music Education designation. The school district can now chalk up another prestigious honor to its incredible resume — on May 5, Texas-based grocer H-E-B bestowed its Excellence in Education Award in the Best Small School District to the Boerne ISD. “We are humbled and honored to be named the Best Small School District in Texas,” Boerne ISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Price said in a news release. “We are a reflection of our community. We live in the best community, which helps us to be the best school district.” Created in 2002, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards are designed to honor outstanding public school professionals and thank them for their dedication and commitment. The District Award recognizes school districts based on commitment to student achievement through innovative programs, parent / community involvement, and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators. This year, H-E-B handed out $430,000 in cash awards and grants to eight educators, two school districts, an early childhood agency and a public school board. Boerne ISD submitted an in-depth application, and H-E-B

58 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

judges visited campuses throughout the school year before the district was named a finalist in the Small School District category with Fabens ISD and George West ISD. For its accomplishment, Boerne ISD will receive a $50,000 prize that will be used by the Boerne Education Foundation for student learning, and will be recognized as part of Excellence in Education’s 20th Anniversary Awards weekend in May 2021. “To earn an award of this magnitude is a team and community effort,” Price says. “We are grateful to our Board of Trustees, principals, teachers, staff, students, parents, business partners and the community.” “Cordillera Ranch’s location within the Boerne ISD boundaries has attracted many families with school-aged children into becoming full-time residents,” adds Charlie Hill, President and CEO of DH Investments which is the developer of Cordillera Ranch. “We are extremely excited for the Boerne Independent School District, and congratulate them for this remarkable honor. We thoroughly enjoy working with the district and commend them for their outstanding work with the children of our community and the great city of Boerne.”

SPOTLIGHT ON BOERNE ISD STAFF Each year, Boerne ISD names a District Teacher of the Year, selected from one of 12 campuses in the district. For the 201920 school year, Janna Clements from Capt. Mark Tyler Voss Middle School was the honored recipient, also receiving a $10,000 check generously donated by Toyota of Boerne who provides the sponsorship annually. Mrs. Clements currently teaches 6thgrade World Cultures and 7th-grade Texas History, and for lucky Cordillera Ranch middle schoolers, Voss Middle School is their designated campus. Boerne ISD recently announced Shane Wilson as the new Principal at Boerne High School — one of the two high schools in the district. A familiar face at BHS, Mr. Wilson has served as the Assistant Principal there since 2016 and brings over 20 years of experience as an educator. Cordillera Ranch falls within the Boerne High School attendance zone. Boerne High School also welcomes Bridget Thomason as the new Assistant Principal. She comes to Boerne ISD after serving in Northside ISD in San Antonio since 1999, most recently in an administrative role at Stevens High School. At Voss Middle School, Lisa Reeh was appointed new Assistant Principal. Mrs. Reeh has been a member of the Boerne ISD family since 2014, including spending last school year as a seventh grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher at Voss Middle School. Originally from the Midwest and spending the last 13 years in Connecticut, the happily transplanted couple is thrilled that their new Garner Custom Home in Cordillera Ranch will keep them grounded for a long time to come. CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 65

“Just two and a half years ago my wife was working in midtown Manhattan,” says the homeowner, who recalls what brought them to Central Texas. “She was offered a professional opportunity in San Antonio and we started looking around.” An early house-hunting trip to the area led them to licensed real estate agent Vance Waller of Cordillera Ranch to start the lot selection process. “We loved everything about the development and the homes,” says the homeowner, “and we were fortunate enough to find a lot that we love.” “We started this project like we start every project: boots on, survey in hand, on the site with the architectural designer,” says Trey Garner, owner of Garner Custom Homes, a Cordillera Ranch Preferred Builder, who worked with Jim Terrian of J. Terrian Designs on the home. Both firms are in Boerne. “Given the way the lot is set up, and the size of home that our clients needed, we knew we had to get creative with the vehicle entry.” The porte cochère concept unfolded quickly and was

not only a distinctive design element but also a practical one, resulting in usable storage space in addition to the climatecontrolled storage within the home. Fortunately for the design team, the clients were decisive and had a clear vision of what they wanted in their 5,363-squarefoot, four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath home, with more than 1,300 square feet of patio space. “It’s just the two of us here,” says the homeowner, “but we have a large extended family. Our grand plan is to entertain family and visitors from all over the country. We look forward to their visits and acquainting them with Cordillera Ranch living.” Once the big concepts were nailed down, the details fell easily into place, says Garner. “Architecturally, it’s somewhat difficult to describe. I like the idea that the home cannot be pigeonholed into one distinct genre. It’s modern, with a European influence, and it fits in beautifully here in the Hill Country.” One of the joys of Hill Country living is bringing the out-

doors in, and that was important to the homeowners who wanted sliding glass doors off the living area to enjoy the views of the backyard with the gorgeous infinity edge swimming pool and spa, firepit, covered patio and large deck. The welcoming area also features a masonry fireplace and outdoor kitchen perfect for hours of lively entertaining with distant views of the Hill Country. Inside, large expanses of energy-efficient windows, many floor-to-ceiling, bring in an abundance of natural light that beautifully highlights six-inch walnut flooring throughout, set off by white baseboards that the homeowner describes as “a New England touch.” Because of the home’s orientation, the windows provide fantastic views both morning and evening. “No matter where we face,” he adds, “we get inspiring views of the sunrise at the back of the house, and from the front, we watch great Texas sunsets.” The home has all the spaciousness and flow you would

expect in a house designed for entertaining, along with stylish touches that make it equally cozy just for two. Painted throughout in crisp, clean white, the house boasts gleaming Carrera marble as an elegant backdrop in the kitchen with countertops, island and full backsplash in the iconic marble. State-of-the-art appliances by Wolf® and Sub-Zero® round out the huge dream kitchen ready for any amount of entertaining, surrounded by expansive custom cabinetry painted white with a very cool feature: “We did inset cabinetry in the kitchen and the pantry,” says Garner, “something you don’t see a lot of down here. It’s more of an East Coast detail.” In this style, he explains, “Doors and drawers are not mounted to a face frame but set inside the face frame, leaving the surface of the cabinet flush and smooth.” The bar is conveniently located between the dining room and kitchen, with illuminated custom cabinetry painted in dramatic black. The dining room/entry foyer features a striking starburststyle chandelier by Kelly Wearstler for Visual Comfort. Carrera marble also stars in the home’s three baths in three distinctive floor patterns: one in hexagon tile, one in herringbone and the third in basket weave. The spacious master bath is essentially covered in Carrera, from the vanities to the floor to the luxurious king-size shower floor and walls. The freestanding tub is a cast iron beauty from Waterworks. The centerpiece of the master bedroom is a masonry fireplace with cut stone surround and detailed molding. His and hers closets are beautifully functional, but the wife’s dedicated closet is enviably exquisite with custom cabinetry, ample natural light and chandelier by Oly Studio.

68 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

The powder bath, with colorfully whimsical wallpaper by Gucci®, is conveniently located between the game room and three guest suites, all with walk-in closets, ensuite baths, luxury finishes and unique lighting. The office is designed for maximum storage, with wall-to-wall, white-painted custom cabinetry and a linear fireplace to warm the space. As the new homeowners settle in, the excitement of filling their new home with the perfect pieces builds. “We’re getting things delivered every week,” says the homeowner, who describes their furnishings as Baker® Furniture style with high-gloss mahogany appearance in credenzas, the dining room table and other pieces sprinkled throughout the house. He calls the overall design “classic and timeless.” The couple regularly practice golf in their golf simulation room and the backyard putting green, and they enjoy the convenience of the Cordillera Ranch golf course and Clubhouse. “This was a delightful project with awesome people,” says Garner. “Our team grew very close to these clients through the preconstruction and construction phases. We were able to live out an organizational core value of ‘we have fun’ every time we interreacted with them.” The homeowner enthusiastically agrees. “This was our first custom build, and working with Garner Custom Homes was great, along with the overall friendliness that the Cordillera Ranch community has shown us in accepting of a couple of Yankees down here in Texas.” GARNER CUSTOM HOMES

H OME TEAM

A DVAN TAG E Inside the sparkling newVistaVisitors Center sits a group of people highly instrumental in the success of Cordillera Ranch. Their accomplishments are on full display throughout the community and Club. A homesite being cleared; new homes under construction; perhaps a new friendly face at the adjacent dining room table, hitting balls on the range, or working out in the Fitness Center — chances are, the Cordillera Ranch Realty Team was the catalyst for the new home, resident or member at the Club. The team, which consists of four outstanding realtors — John Kuhry, Charles Mueller, Vance Waller and Carey Yeager, and Director of Real Estate Sales Barry Denton, quite often serve as Cordillera Ranch’s first impression after a prospect checks in at the guard house and arrives at the Vista Visitors Center. The CR Realty Team members know their role, and they cherish every opportunity to meet with prospective residents and members to learn what their desires and needs are, and showcase everything Cordillera Ranch has to offer. When it comes to knowledge of the Club, community and the lifestyle found at Cordillera Ranch, there is no equal to a CR Realty professional. Each team member focuses solely on homesites and existing homes within the community; in fact, most of the CR Realty Team live in Cordillera Ranch. Which begs the question — why would someone wanting to buy or sell within the community choose anyone else for this process? In this issue, each member of the CR

70 | JULY/AUGUST 2020

Realty Team will answer that question and share some of their recent success stories. In future issues, you will learn more about the team members, including which one befriended a famous football player, who was born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, who lives in the “cookie house” and which team member would invite Amelia Earhart to dinner. Why should those who choose to buy or sell in the community choose Cordillera Ranch Realty?

marketing property in the community. It is easy for us to sell that; it is almost like the house is secondary.”

“My wife and I had been looking for a special place to retire for years. I happened to run across Cordillera Ranch in my search and fortunately spoke to John Kuhry. We drove in from West Texas, met John and began the process of determining if Cordillera Ranch was a match for what we were looking for. John has immense knowledge of the real estate market, the growth of Boerne and the property values. He is honest, and respectful of his clients’ time. John was instrumental in helping us find our retirement home.” – Mark and Linda

JOHN KUHRY “Our agents only work Cordillera Ranch. I am not worrying about other homes in my portfolio other than homes within the community that we represent. We are not just selling their house, we’re selling the lifestyle. Very few agents are equipped to do that — they do not have the access or the knowledge that we have. When you list with an outside agent, they are basically only selling the house. We sell Cordillera Ranch as a whole. Once they tour the entire community, they see that they are also investing in a lifestyle, not just a house. We have unique access to the Clubs’ staff and facilities, which is critical to

CHARLES MUELLER “Selling within Cordillera Ranch is all I do. I do not represent buyers all over the city or county; I work exclusively in Cordillera Ranch. Therefore, I know the product better than anybody. It is that knowledge and expertise of being on-site that gives us the advantage. When it comes to marketing a homesite and undeveloped property, we are uniquely suited for that because many outside agents can’t find a particular lot out here. When it comes

to selling homesites, we are the best because we are the only team within Cordillera Ranch.”

“We recently purchased at Cordillera Ranch with the assistance of Charles Mueller. His professionalism, knowledge and enthusiasm for all that Cordillera Ranch has to offer is infectious. He was a joy to work with and he made the buying process fun with his great sense of humor. He listened attentively and helped us identify the perfect location for our future dream home.” – Raj and Linda “As Cordillera Ranch property owners and future residents, we would like to express our gratitude for the hard work of Charles Mueller in helping us locate the perfect property for our dream home. Coming from Corpus Christi, we were drawn to the Hill Country and the inherent charm of the Cordillera Ranch lifestyle. Charles was empathetic, professional and, most importantly, not only listened to our needs and wants in a homesite, but was sensitive to what we were looking for in a community. His continued enthusiasm in staying in touch after the sale has contributed greatly to our excitement and anticipation of calling Cordillera Ranch ‘home’ in the very near future.” – Gary and Mary

service and relationship does not stop. It really carries on – we have clients who come to us for recommendations on outside services, and they also come to us for social introductions through the neighborhood and Clubs. Our relationship and service with the client carries on well beyond what an outside realtor would maintain.”

“From the concierge services withVance being at our home for all showings, to being able to share all the wonderful amenities of Cordillera Ranch along with the seamless process from listing to closing, we say thank you toVance and the Cordillera Ranch Realty Team.WithVance’s professionalism, expertise and his sincere support of Cordillera Ranch, the sale of our home was successful and exceeded our expectations.” – Scott andVeronica “Working withVance was an extreme pleasure and totally exceeded our expectations. Given the nature of the Cordillera Ranch development, I did expect a certain level of professionalism, butVance is truly outstanding. From the outset Vance was attentive, listened to our needs, priorities and plans, and was professional regarding all aspects of our search and purchase. He is extremely knowledgeable about the development and the area. He was patient while we conducted our due diligence and answered all questions we had about the development and the process.” – Vince and Ashley

VANCE WALLER “We have intimate knowledge of the property and the amenities, and can tell clients how they will benefit from those. Also, we are physically on the property — that is a tremendous advantage. Those two factors equate to better results for the client. Lots of communities in the Texas Hill Country have beautiful homes, but the amenities and assets in Cordillera Ranch are what make it unique. Once you buy a home or homesite with us, our

CAREY YEAGER “We are on-site and available to our clients and prospective clients. Plus, Cordillera Ranch is all I do. Having been a realtor outside of Cordillera Ranch and through my experience, I find that that is a huge factor. We know the community extremely

well. We are not just walking a homesite or selling a house, we are showcasing all the aspects of Cordillera Ranch and assisting someone in making the right decision that fits their desires.”

“Selling a home that you have enjoyed for a number of years is bittersweet. Choosing the right realtor can be a make-or-break decision. Fortunately for us, CareyYeager was the perfect choice. She made selling our home not only a smooth transaction, she did it in nine days! Carey went above and beyond the duty of a realtor by ensuring our move-out was painless. She is the ultimate professional and her attention to detail and dedication to her clients is unparallelled.” – Richard and Carol “We recently closed on our new home and want to take this time to applaud our wonderful realtor, CareyYeager. We had been looking in several communities over the past few years for a retirement place. We had met with Carey about three years ago, but were not at the retirement stage then.We looked in Granbury, Glen Rose, the coast area, just to mention a few.We kept coming back to the Boerne area and knew Cordillera Ranch was our favorite. When we stopped by the office to ask about properties, Carey came down the hall with a big smile on her face. It only took a few moments for all of us to remember our first meeting. She took us on a tour of the properties, asked us all the right questions about budget, styles, interests in hobbies and activities. She compiled a list for us to see the next day, including model homes and different builders. We so appreciated all the information she gave us to keep within our budget. Once we decided on our house, she was a trooper in getting the ball rolling for everything to come. Living five hours away in Midland, she was so helpful in getting things done for us without having to make so many trips before the closing. Every detail was covered and explained to us. Carey has also been so helpful with recommendations for services that we need. And I know that we can call or email her anytime we have further questions about our new community. Carey made sure we got to see all that Cordillera Ranch has to offer and explained the different activities. We cannot thank Carey enough for all she did to help us find our retirement home.” – Duane and Kim CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 71
