n the heels of one of the most valiant and successful military missions ever conducted by the U.S. Armed Forces, it’s important to continue supporting all of the military men and women who protect our freedoms and serve this country. Their incomparable dedication, commitment and sacrifice allow us to freely enjoy this beautiful country and it should never be taken for granted. We should never stop giving back to these soldiers and their families. So many of these heroes return with incomprehensible injuries that change their life forever. Whatever the injury, these young men and women face an incredibly difficult road to recovery. This is not the way they envisioned coming home to their family, and so many are driven to come back into post-combat life and help support their families and grow a career. These debilitating wounds, however, could potentially wreck their dreams without support networks and help from people like Retired 3-Star General Leroy Sisco and the organization he founded in 2007: the Military Warriors Support Foundation. General Sisco, along with Ken Eakes, has a tireless determination to assist those in the greatest need. Military Warriors Support Foundation (www.militarywarriors.org) provides four main programs that help wounded warriors re-integrate into life back at home: “Homes4WoundedHeroes” (awards mortgage-free homes), “CEO’s4Heroes” (links vets with employment opportunities), “Skills4Life” (individual and family mentoring programs), and “Education4Heroes” (provides scholarships and education opportunities). WE NEED YOUR HELP! Cordillera Ranch is proud to be hosting the “Homes for Heroes Celebrity Golf and Gun Shootout” benefitting the MWSF on October 2nd and 3rd. Sponsorship opportunities are available and teams for either the golf tournament at the Nicklaus Signature Course at Cordillera Ranch or the sporting clays tournament at the sporting clays course are available. There will be a draw party with dinner and live music on October 2nd with the golf and gun shootout on October 3rd – and you won’t want to miss the home giveaway that will take place at the event. Learn more about how you can help support these wounded warriors at www.homes4heroestx.com. Upon asking a retired 4-Star General (and Cordillera Ranch resident) to join us in this quest, his response was, “We can never do TOO much for these men and women. How can I help?” You may contact Cat Mandell at cat@mysagemortgage.com or me at cphill@dhinv.com to help. Sincerely,

Charlie Hill Vice President Cordillera Ranch

Summer is here and that means Junior Golf is in full swing here at the Clubs. I hope you have the chance to send your children or grandchildren to one of the Cordillera Cubs Junior Golf Camps this summer. They are a great way to introduce kids to the game, teaching them the fundamentals in a fun environment. Various camps are offered throughout the summer so please check www.clubsofcordilleraranch.com for more information. Highlighting the July schedule is our 6th Annual Patriot Partnership. The tournament takes place on Monday morning July 4th with an 8:30am shotgun. Two-Person teams may be formed by pairing up two members or by having a member and a guest. This is a great way to spend the holiday and celebrate it with family and friends here at the Club. In each issue of Cordillera Living we will be offering a few golf instructional tips that I think you will be able to learn something from. We have a great group of PGA golf professionals on staff that have a strong teaching background and are eager to help you improve your game that will be writing the articles. Also, we will highlight a specific new product in the golf industry that you may want to give a try to see if it might help you lower your scores. Enjoy and see you on the course, Marc DeWall, PGA Director of Golf, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch mdewall@cordilleraranch.com | 830.336.4653

NEWUCT D O R P 14 | JULY/August 2011

With all the new technology out this year the Callaway Razr Hawk is among the top one’s out this year. The key technologies that make this product so good are forged composite, a cutting-edge material (forging carbon fiber) co-developed with Lamborghini, allows Callaway engineers the freedom to precisely control wall thickness. As a result, specific body parts are made thinner (lighter) or thicker (heavier) as desired. As the search for distance goes on Callaway also added length to the driver which is now at 46 inches long. Some people have gained up to as much as 20 yards in distance with this new technology. Callaway also offered a nice red arrow on the top of the club for alignment purposes. The Razr Hawk has improved feel over previous Callaway composite drivers; very stable, head-heavy feel throughout swing; shots jump off springy face with a softer, lower-pitched crack. The new technology has also allowed them to put the weighting where toe hits and heel hits are more playable than in the past. This is a great product with all the new technology intact. Come by the Golf and Trading Shop today to try out this new product.

When the ball is in a fairway bunker, the objective is to get greater distance and contact the ball first unlike a greenside bunker where a player should always contact the sand first. The fundamental principles to play from a fairway bunkers are: • Select a club with adequate loft to safely clear the lip of the fairway bunker. • Check the lie. A good lie will allow a normal swing with a few adjustments; a poor lie will require more descent or a “pitch out” to the fairway. • Establish a solid footing. • Choke down on the club to ensure that you will contact the ball first. • Place hands slightly ahead. • Sweep the ball from the sand using a normal swing. Visualize making contact with the ball below its equator, but above the sand. • During the backswing make sure your lower body is quiet in order to stay centered over the ball. • During the downswing, swing slower from the top. • Visualize the front edge of the ball to ensure solid contact. We have several areas in the Practice Park to practice your fairway bunker shots. Practicing your fairway bunkers shots can also improve your timing with normal fairway shots. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at the Golf and Trading Shop. Marc DeWall Director of Golf The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

eventeen years ago, a non-profit organization called the Texas Olive Oil Council set a goal to successfully cultivate olives in Texas. Experts said this couldn’t be done, but now Texas is harvesting more than three tons of olives each year and it has brought with it a new oil in Texas—olive oil. This incredible product—aptly deemed “liquid gold” by the brilliant Homer-- is vastly underrated by most American citizens. Olive oil has long been considered more than mere food to the Mediterranean culture: it has been medicinal, magical, an endless source of fascination and wonder and the fountain of great wealth and power. Indeed the importance of the olive industry in ancient economies cannot be overstated. And now, the industry is on its way to becoming the “next big thing” in the Lone Star State. For 2011, the Texas Olive Oil Council leaders are anticipating a statewide yield of approximately 500 tons; making this a banner year for the burgeoning olive oil industry. The olive tree has been strongly ingrained in Mediterranean culture since the early days of civilization. The Greeks and Phoenicians began

18 | JULY/August 2011

exporting olive oil westward to Italy, France and Spain as early as 400 BC, and by 100 AD, the Romans had become major cultivators of the product. By the year 1300, olive oil was a dietary necessity in the entire Mediterranean region. Olive trees first arrived in Cuba approximately 200 years later when they were introduced to the New World from Spain. From there the trees were brought to the colonies by priests who established missions by planting olive trees and grapes. Those olive trees planted in California around 1769 became known as mission olive trees. And although the missions were eventually abandoned, early California ranchers began to care for the old trees and took samplings to produce more trees. By the late 1800s, the olive oil industry in California was booming and it continued to thrive until Europe started exporting more of their olive oil to the United States. Because imported oil was less expensive, the

California olive industry began to decline. The introduction of refined seed oils over the next few decades further decimated the industry. These oils were far lower in price than even imported olive oils and, as a result, the demand for olive oil dropped. Hope sprang eternal for the declining industry in the late 1980s when the health benefits of olive oil suddenly became front page news, and many vineyard owners began looking at their forgotten trees with new hope. Over the next few years, many trials were conducted as the industry took flight, and after countless soil testing and climate comparison by the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, olive trees were planted in Central Texas. Although many Texans may be unaware that

olives are being grown here, the industry continues to coalesce and gain recognition and many native olive growers remain united in the opinion that there is plenty of room for expansion of the industry. Olive collecting and processing is relatively straightforward, and needs minimal, mechanical technology. Unlike grains which can be destroyed by humidity and pests in storage, olive oil can be very easily stored and will not go sour for at least a year (unless exposed to extreme conditions) by which time a fresh harvest will be available. The combination of these factors has helped to ensure that the olive industry has become the region’s most dependable food and cash crop, and the advantages of olive oil are plentiful. Besides its wonderful culinary applications, olive oil is often used for religious rituals, medicinal purposes, as a fuel in oil lamps, soap-making, and skin care application. Olive oil contains a wide variety of valuable antioxidants that are not found in other oils. Hydroxytyrosol is thought to be the chief antioxidant compound in olives, and thought to play a considerable role in the numerous health benefits attributed to olive oil. Disease-related studies suggest that olive oil has a protective effect against certain malignant tumors in the breast, prostate, endometrial and digestive tract. Producers of the substance in the United States even claim that two tablespoons of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of heart disease. Olive oil, being almost pure fat, is dense in calories yet healthy, without adverse health effects. In addition to the internal health benefits of olive oil, topical application is quite trendy with fans of natural health remedies. Extra virgin olive oil is the preferred grade for moisturizing the skin, and can even be used as an effective shaving tool.

In the culinary aspect, olive oil has become the root of gourmet in many cultures. One could even say that the revolutionary industry is comparable to the wine business. Choosing a cold-pressed olive oil can be similar to selecting a wine. The flavor of these oils vary considerably and a particular oil may be more suited for a particular dish. Like wine produced in vineyards, the taste of the olive oil is influenced not only by the soil on which the olive trees grow, but also by the moment when the olives have been harvested and ground. There is much still to learn about olive, its oil, and this magnificent blossoming industry and Texas is clearly up to the task. On March 26, 2011, many growers, producers, and a few new enthusiasts gathered for the First Annual Texas Olive Oil Tasting Festival. Celebrations such as this are launching around the country as new awareness for this incredible product grows. Texas is at the forefront of the olive oil industry and has even captured the attention of PBS. The network is currently filming a documentary called “Texas Olive Trails” that follows the emergence of the state’s olive agriculture.

CiTrUS ToMaTo SaUCe 1 lemon, zested and juiced (Meyer lemon, if available) 1 orange, zested and juiced 4 large tomatoes, diced 3 green onions, chopped 1/4 cup medium to intense extra virgin olive oil 6 fresh basil leaves, sliced 1 tablespoon capers Mix together into a medium sauce pan. sk most anyone about what it takes to be successful in business, and they will tell you about long hours, countless days of traveling, and missing time with the family. You simply must give yourself over to your job and be completely dedicated to it. Dean and Nawanda Fuller went that route, and it almost destroyed their family. So in the darkness of the night, and with one simple prayer, they went an entirely different route and became more successful than they could have ever imagined.

Growing up in New Mexico, Dean and Nawanda were both born into oil families. “My dad worked for El Paso Energy Company. Nawanda’s dad was a farmer, and he ended up working there as well. In fact, the whole town of Jall, New Mexico pretty much worked there,” Dean begins. While both of them were intimately familiar with the energy industries, Dean had no great aspirations to follow in his father’s footsteps. “I just wanted to play basketball! I lived in a camp of 84 company owned houses. There were 25 boys within a year of my age. It was like living at camp. We all played so many games and activities. We slept out under the stars at least twice a week. I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up, but I just loved life and was living it. I played sports and chased girls, and I grew up in the church. It was just life, and I loved it.” While attending school, Dean and Nawanda’s romance had a rocky start. “We dated in the 7th grade for one week. Then we tried again in the 8th grade, but then she dumped me for the starting high school quarterback!” Dean laughs. By the 9th grade, Dean and Nawanda were “going steady” and they dated throughout high school. One week post-graduation, and they were married. Nawanda continues, “We married very young and had a baby early, and Dean went to the placement office at the University of New Mexico and asked them ‘What degree makes the most money?’ That’s how he selected Mechanical Engineering.” Dean adds, “Well, Nawanda was working as a secretary at the University, and we sat down to budget our money and we found that at the end of the month we had $4 left over. And that was before we had even bought groceries!”

With two young daughters, Deedra and Dena, the Fuller family moved back to Jall, NM as Dean had accepted a position with El Paso Energy. “Nawanda was working at the bank, and we took the job back in Jall because they gave us free company housing. I took a job as an Engineer, but they put me in Technical Services. I put in pipelines and wore Wranglers and boots and worked outside all day. The rest of my buddies from school wore slacks and suits and I didn’t. At first it really upset me, but it gave me a lot of experience. They told me they wanted me to learn more, but I looked at my buddies who wore suits and assigned these projects, and here I was out there working in the sun. At that time I was working 80 hours week and putting over 40,000 miles per year on my truck.” And that experience that Dean gathered in Jall served him well, as they soon moved to Midland in 1974 with Northern Natural Gas. “I didn’t know it at the time, but it was a great move for us. I was the Project Engineer. The first two or three days, my new boss, who became my mentor, and I walked into his office and they had $14 million in projects for the year, and I was $13 million of that. He figured I was from El Paso Gas, so I would be the best for these projects, but at the time, they wanted me to work on projects that I didn’t know anything about. Obviously I had to learn a lot, very quickly, but I got them done.” During their stay in Midland, a dark cloud had settled over the Fuller family. One that ultimately led them to divorce. “We divorced in ’75. I was living in Midland, and Nawanda was with the girls in the suburbs. When I had come to Northern I wanted to be a big wig. I always wanted to be an executive by the time I was 35. Back in the 70’s that

meant hard drinking and partying, and I was certainly doing my part.” And while their marriage had fallen apart, Dean’s career kept him moving up. “They had been wanting me to move to Omaha to the Headquarters for Northern. I kept saying no. I went up to headquarters for a meeting and they made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse. I called Nawanda and asked if she and the girls would move with me to Omaha and try again. She said yes, but we both went with the wrong attitude. So she was mad she said yes, and I was mad I had asked.” In Omaha, they continued to tread water as a couple, even though they were divorced. Dean explains, “We began to look around at churches. We began to realize that if we were going to make this work, we knew that we were going to need to make changes in our lives. We found one we thought was ok, and a guy was there named Calvin Miller. There were 2 or 3 guys in that church that I was impressed with their business savvy, I got to play basketball with them, and they were God’s guys 7 days a week. I began to see a different way of life for me, and for us.” And with that, they welcomed God into their marriage. “It was November of 75 and we were lying in bed, and we had a disagreement. It was dark and we were inches apart, but we were a thousand yards apart. I said ‘We’ve done everything, so I guess I’ll pray.’ I got on my knees and prayed to God, ‘I’ve messed up my life, my family’s life, my kid’s lives…so if you want me, you can have me. You can have all of me.’ A week later, Dean was reading the Bible daily. Nawanda remained apprehensive. “Basically I was really struggling to know if we were going to make it. I didn’t know if I could believe the change was real, and if the Bible would make sense to me. Dean had started reading the Bible, and I went to

bed one night and I had a dream that I was a census worker in Omaha. We went up to a house, and the lady invited me into her home. It was strange because the walls didn’t meet and the ceiling didn’t meet, and I asked her ‘What is wrong with your house?’ She took me to the basement and pointed to the corner of the brickwork and one block in the corner was sideways. She said ‘Do you see that? Whomever built the house did not build the house with the proper cornerstone and it means that God is not the foundation of your life’. The next morning I asked Dean if the Bible says anything about the cornerstone. We looked and looked but couldn’t seem to find it. The next Sunday the sermon was about Jesus being the cornerstone of your home and your life.” Nawanda and Dean were re-married on their original anniversary, and just recently celebrated 46 years of marriage. “We did all the wrong things and we just don’t recommend doing anything the way we did!” they both laugh. But God was still hard at work on Dean’s heart. “Again, I was determined to be an executive by 35. But after re-committing my life to Him, I just felt that God was asking me to give up my desire toward business. So I struggled with that, but I stepped back and said I’m done. I gave it to Him. I was so relaxed. I just let Him lead us, instead of constantly trying to climb the ladder.” No sooner than Dean made this commitment, his phone rang. Dean explains, “All of a sudden, there was an opportunity to move back to Midland. It was back in gas supply. That’s where I wanted to be. My boss told me I was nuts, cause it was a lateral move. It was a bad move on paper, Nawanda didn’t want to go back, and the girls said ‘Dad we don’t want to go back, that’s where all our problems were. But we went.’ Dean spent several years running the Engineering Department at Northern

Natural Gas, and was then promoted to Strategic Planning in Omaha, and yet another promotion to run operations in Liberal, Kansas. As Dean puts it, “They had about 800 people in town, and I was 32 years old. It was a good decision for a job, but it was a terrible place for the family. They were miserable.” Then, in 1984, Dean got a call from an old friend based in Tulsa. “My friend called and wanted me to help him start a new oil and gas company in Tulsa. Nawanda and I prayed and prayed over it, and we had about $40,000 saved, and we used it all on that deal. We moved there, and founded the company that would be known as Panda Resources. The business exploded. It was the 25th fastest growing company in the U.S. We just had crazy revenues, and did good marketing. They re-regulated the market and we were able to establish new relationships and re-negotiate contracts. It was great fun. As we made money we started buying new properties. It was a tremendous business.” Dean and his partner sold the business in 1993, and enjoyed taking a break for a year. However, opportunities continued to present themselves. “Nawanda and I were going through a growing stage, and we had re-trenched our lives with God, and we just spent a year paying attention to Him, and not looking anywhere else. I decided I wanted to keep working, but I didn’t want to start another company. I had started working as a Project Engineer for Transok, Inc in Tulsa. One day, they asked me to talk to the owner of Transok, and I asked ‘What for’? ‘Well, he just wants to talk to you’ was the answer. So I went and we had a 2 hour talk, and he asked me a lot of questions, and a week later I get a call and they said ‘Mr Shockley, the owner, wants you in Dallas tonight and please bring Nawanda’. We got there and had dinner with them, and at 7am, we had

all have the capability to be the worst “ We in the world, or the best in the world. ” breakfast with all the higher-ups. Mr. Brooks, the CEO says to the others at the table, ‘Have you crossed the bridge yet? Well hurry up and do it.’ Then he stood up and left. The owner said ‘We’re considering you for the President’s position’. I asked him how many others were being interviewed. He said ‘You’re the only one’. They ended up making me President and CEO of Transok, with 700 employees. I was 48 years old.” A quick year later and Transok, Inc was sold for $890 million. Another brief retirement, and Dean joined Aquila as the Senior Vice President of Midstream business. He assisted with the sale of that company a year and a half later, and Dean and Nawanda moved to San Antonio. “As soon as I drove over the hill at Cordillera Ranch, I just said ‘Holy Moly’. We bought a lot in the back on 2 acres. We were about to build, but we were on 7 acres in the home that we were renting at the time, and we decided we wanted more acreage. So we bought a larger lot and got to building. We have just loved being at Cordillera Ranch so much. We

love the people…we just love the people here so much. We’re in the Bible Studies here, and really enjoy that. But the people are the key. They make Cordillera Ranch so much more than a development.” While Dean and Nawanda are enjoying the lifestyle that Cordillera Ranch offers, they are still staying busy. “We’ve got two businesses left; one in Dallas and one in New Mexico, and so we’ve stayed busy. We’d like to grow those and my plan is to sell them in the next 2 to 4 years.” And regardless of Dean’s plans, he and Nawanda are careful to step back and make sure that God is directing their next steps. “As we look at some of our successes, some people might just say that it was due to dumb luck, or some may just say that we were in the right place at the right time. We feel that God has a way of moving your life around, and Nawanda and I just make sure we listen to God and that He will put us where we belong.” Dean continues, “I have asked God before if I was supposed to stop and be a preacher. He said ‘No – just keep doing what you’re doing’. I’ve got guys that work for me that are so far away from God, but I can see them moving closer to God. One girl that works in Dallas was from an abusive family and she was just in a terrible place, and now she has gotten rid of the abuse and she just beams.” Nawanda adds, “Stories like that are because of Dean’s influence. One of Dean’s gifts is that he really knows how to encourage; he loves to bring out the best in his team, and they love working for him. He seems to be able to see people’s gifts and use them to the company’s best abilities. He’s a reconciler, an encourager…and I think God gave him the gift of going in and seeing things that could be done differently and financially rewarding. All the while he makes a positive difference to those around him.” Dean finishes, “We all have the capability to be the worst in the world, or the best in the world. ‘Good’ can get in the way of ‘Best’. We can decide something is just good enough. But we can also do our ‘Best’ by just keeping going, and to keep doing good. And that’s what Nawanda and I have done. We have simply kept going. And that has brought us success in spite of our failures.”

FASHION

fALL FAShION PREVIEW } { By Erin Busbee, Fashion Stylist Photos courtesy of Neiman Marcus

Every fashion season it’s out with the old and in with the new. But when each designer reveals his or her own creative vision in a collection, it may be confusing and tough to figure out what is actually ‘in’. Don’t panic, though, in that sea of runway, ready-to-wear looks, there are always standout trends you can try to update your wardrobe. Here are this fall’s most exciting fashion trends: SEEING SPOTS Polka-dotted garments… dotted the fall 2011 runways. Designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and Marc Jacobs saw spots. The eye-popping print may be challenging to wear from head to toe. If you want to try the trend in a subtle way, buy a spotted scarf, blouse or skirt. RED HOT! Red is red hot for fall! You will no doubt see every variation of this fiery color, from scarlet to sangria. Other color notables: rust, mustard yellow, jade green and royal blue. Also look for brightly colored bottoms. Bold pants and jeans make quite a statement! MAD FOR PLAID Think Duncan McCloud, Scottish Tartan plaid. The criss-crossed, bands of color looks polished and pretty when worn sparingly. Try a plaid blazer or skirt.

MOD MOMENT Shift dresses, peter pan collars, double-breasted pea coats, even beehive hair-do’s showed up on the fall 2011 runways. For some 60’s inspired ideas, you can check out groovy collections by Alberta Ferretti and Bottega Veneta.

SHOES Get pumped for pumps! This fall is all about lady-like pumps and demure kitten heels. All you petite ladies will be relieved to know the platform is still kicking around. Also check out the high-heeled loafer, a perfect mix of masculinity and femininity.

GEOMETRY Don’t worry there’s no math involved in this fashion trend. To jump on this bold and modern bandwagon, look for graphic lines, color-blocking and geometric prints.

ACCESSORIES The structured bag is big this fall. Any python or a python print bag is also on trend. Cuff bracelets are powerful accessories that can make an outfit. (Not to mention give you imaginary wonder woman super powers!)

MAXI-MIZE The maxi skirts and dresses are sticking around. These elegant, comfortable and versatile pieces are long, falling somewhere between your ankle and the floor. Try reinventing your summer version for fall by pairing it with a chunky knit sweater or blazer. DUSTER COATS These floor-sweeping jackets add incredible drama to your overall look (think Neo from “The Matrix”). MENSWEAR FOR WOMEN This fall look for a resurgence of menswear and minimalism. Some of the most notable menswear pieces: the tux, bow ties, oxford shoes and structured suits. Just be sure to add feminine touches to your manly looks.

Other notables: sheer fabrics, shiny fabrics (metallics are still big), technofabrics (vinyl, plastic and rubber), pleats, leather, lot of black (shocker) and lastly, fur including furry, gorilla arms. NO joke… literally full, furry, feather-dusting arms! Okay, I realize it’s a long list and again may seem a bit scattered, but the good news is: trends usually disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. My advice: spend your money on good quality classics, and buy a couple of trendy pieces each season. Try picking a trend that either really grabs you or one that you are most comfortable recreating. Trends can really help you reinvent your wardrobe and give you a fresh, fashionforward style.

OUTDOORS

By Liz Wilkins

“i

f I had to pick a favorite,” Mike said thoughtfully, “it would have to be this James Purdey 28 gauge we carried for awhile. It was beautiful--engraved by one of the most premiere engravers in the world.” Hearing Mike Cook talk about guns is like hearing Picasso talk about artwork; one can’t help but be intrigued. This is a man, after all, who is involved with something he is truly passionate about, and his passion is contagious. Ironically, as excited as Cook is about firearms, he stumbled into this business by accident. “It was 1993, and I didn’t know a whole lot about firearms,” he recalled. “I happened to see an advertisement in the newspaper of a gun for sale. I did a little research and discovered that the gun for sale was worth double the asking price, so I bought it, cleaned it up a little, and resold it. After that, I was hooked.” After taking a few years to learn more about the industry and further develop his interest in guns, Mike Cook decided to partner up with his friend Bo Winston, a fellow hunting enthusiast, to start a business of their own. In 2003, CookWinston and Company was founded. The company, based in Boerne, Texas, specializes in the acquisition and the appraisal of firearms and collections of firearms. Cook and Winston are happy to appraise any firearm, no matter how big or small. The partners are even willing to travel in order to appraise a collection if necessary.

Cook-Winston and Company has come a long way since its modest start eight years ago. Most firearms sold at the store sell for more than $2,500, and some even sell for more than $100, 000. “There are several factors that determine how much a firearm is worth,” Mike explained. “Who manufactured the piece, when it was manufactured, who has owned it, and the engravings that it has are all factors that determine the gun’s value. I once appraised former president George Bush’s gun collection. It was worth a pretty good deal.” As Cook continues to talk about his business and the many guns he has appraised, it becomes obvious that he genuinely loves his job. “What I love the most,” he says, “is probably getting to meet so many different people from all different walks of life. I love that I have the opportunity to talk with people who share my interest in guns. The guns themselves are a form of art, and so many people I meet can appreciate that. I am also learning new things every single day. There are just so many types of guns with so many different uses. I really enjoy being able to learn, and I’m so lucky to be at a place that gives me that opportunity. I also love to hunt, and I get to meet a lot of people that share that interest as well.” Mike Cook is truly living the dream. He goes to

work every day at a job he loves, and there is no shortage of new firearms or new people for him to encounter. CookWinston and Company started as a mere idea, and has become one of the most respected businesses of its type in the state. When people buy a Cook-Winston firearm, they can be rest assured that they are making a quality purchase at a fair price. The company even offers a special guarantee: Return the firearm in the same condition as it was sold, at any time, and you will receive 100% of your purchase price in trade value toward your next purchase. Cook-Winston and Company is located on 216 East Blanco in Boerne, and Mike and Bo are always eager to answer questions or offer advice. We are overwhelmed! Our hearts are filled with joy as we look back at the wonderful blessings that God poured out on the 2011 Cordillera Ranch Shindig. This event took many hours of planning, new relationships were built, and the work that we were able to do with other businesses in the community brought the Shindig to a whole new level. Our initial goal when asked to chair this event was to glorify God in all that we do and to show others Christ like love. We never expected for this event to bless our lives in such a beautiful way. We are pleased to announce this year’s event raised $188,000! We were able to give $100,000 to the Kendall County Women’s Shelter, $18,000 to Roy Maas Youth Alternatives MeadowLand Campus, $45,000 to Young Life Boerne $10,000 to Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department. We are keeping $15,000 in the bank for future fundraising events. We are so proud of the community for coming together to benefit these organizations. DRIVE

Whether cruising the Hill Country or the streets of Cordillera Ranch, you’ll look good wherever you go.

638 hp/205 mph on the test track ZR1 is powered by a 6.2 Liter LS9 aluminum block V8 equipped with a four-lobe EatonŽ Twin Vortices Series™ supercharger with intercooler. It delivers an SAE-certified 638 hp at 6500 rpm and 604 lb.- ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. The engine employs lightweight titanium intake valves and connecting rods and contains a high-performance dry-sump oil system, which distributes pressurized oil from an external reservoir to protect vital components under high-g driving conditions.

It goes on the scale before it goes on the car ZR1 engineers were religious about maintaining a favorable power-to-weight ratio. So they specified high-strength, lightweight materials wherever possible. One example is the aluminum frame structure (the same one used on the C6.R race car), which weighs 138 lbs. less than an equivalent steel structure. Result: an extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio of 5.2 pounds per horsepower.

BremboÂŽ carbon-ceramic stopping power The ZR1 offers massive stopping power, thanks to its Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors that weigh almost 50 percent less than equivalent cast-iron units. Besides reducing overall mass, they are capable of operating at 1,000 degrees Celsius (as hot as molten lava) without warping. The system employs six-piston front and fourpiston rear calipers engaging vented, crossdrilled rotors.

by shane reynolds We have all heard the buzz over and over about the different social media that exists today- Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and others. With all of our busy lives, it can be overwhelming to keep up with another new form of communication. Between cell phones, email and text it’s already hard to keep up! But social media such as Facebook and Twitter can be very helpful communication methods for a community such as Cordillera Ranch with so many different activities and such a vibrant social heartbeat. The keys are: using these media efficiently, providing interesting content with lots of photos and video and not creating a nuisance by inundating people with an overload of info! We certainly aim to use these media that helps our residents and members. As a community, we are always working to better communicate current events, plans and news, and as a club with such a unique, wide array of actitvities, parties, golf tournaments and other events we want to keep members informed in a fun and simple way. We obviously use email to keep people updated on weekly happenings at the club. Facebook and Twitter, however, offer a way to have a much more enriched, more current two-way relationship with members (and prospective members and residents) and keep club photos updated on the Facebook page. Whether you’re wanting to explore photos from one of the recent outdoor adventure camps at the club in which your kids participated, or see results and photos from a recent golf tournament, the Cordillera Ranch Facebook page is your answer to everything. We are working to continually upgrade our presence in the social media world and enrich your experience as a result. We may be looking to add some promotional features in the future so be sure to get on there and “Like Us” and share it with friends because too! Part of what we want to build is an wide ranging interactive network of “fans” and maybe we’ll introduce you to some great pages too. Below are a few more details about how we are using these media.

Facebook is a great way to communicate with the rest of Cordillera Ranch as most people who are active on Facebook will have a couple hundred friends that they can tell about Cordillera Ranch activities. Facebook is a quick and effective way for the club to post photos of events and results of tournaments. You can also post photos, videos and links on the page as well. With our own page, it’s easy to follow us on Facebook.

Does all this work?

We have also linked our Twitter account to Facebook status updates so whenever a status is posted you’ll get a tweet if you follow us on Twitter. This can be very helpful if you’re trying to figure out what the dinner features are for the evening at the Club as we’re now tweeting the daily features. We’ll also be keeping you updated with news around the area and in the real estate and club industry plus we’ll retweet news from residents and members. As it gains acceptance it can be a great way to have a central news (and gossip) source for the ranch! And when you get a tweet about a fun event or some intriguing dinner specials – retweet it and invite your friends! Follow us now! http://twitter.com/CordilleraRanch

Video utilized by the club and by our members is a great way to communicate successful events along with the fun and adventurous outdoor lifestyle the club offers our members and their guest. Reading about club events or real estate is all well and good but watching a video you get a true feeling for what people are like, what the facilities have to offer and hopefully illustrate what a wonderful place the club and Cordillera Ranch are! A simple Google or YouTube search for “Cordillera Ranch” will bring you to some videos we have posted on our websites and YouTube for our prospective members to see. We encourage you to post your fun videos to YouTube also!

Different people will utilize different means to gather information from the Club or from Cordillera Ranch. We certainly understand many of our members or residents will simply not utilize social media as part of their relationship with the club or ranch, be we will continue to improve our use of these different media to enrich your experience, create a more connected community and offer better communication!

HOME TOUR

Settled in a still largely undeveloped portion of Cordillera Ranch, Ken and Hope Nibling have found their future on Riverwood. The beauty and architectural genius of this Hill Country home is a testament to the creativity, vision and perseverance of Ray Stadler and his custom home design team. This house of hope promises to bring many fond memories for the Niblings in the years ahead and will forever serve as a testament to the relationship the couple has developed with both their home – and their builder.

By Bethany Heinesh, Photography By Benjamin Weber

When Ken and Hope Nibling traveled west from their Katy, Texas home to avoid Hurricane Rita in October of 2005, they had no idea what lay ahead – the stuff that dreams are made of. “Hope and I weren’t afraid of the storm,” Ken remembers. “We just didn’t want to deal with the madness of the city. We headed for San Antonio, but we had no idea we were on a life-changing trip at the time.”

While in the Alamo City, upon the urging of Ken’s sister-in-law, the couple took a trip out to the Hill Country and toured Cordillera Ranch with real estate agent Gary Peterson. “I had been thinking about retirement and I knew when the time was right, I wanted to retire on a Jack Nicklaus golf course,” said Ken. “We had no intention of buying anything that day –Hope and I

A

Project

were just curious. When Gary took us to this lot and I found out it was in the exact golf community I was looking for, I was pretty much sold right away.” Hope, a Louisiana native, says it was the natural setting that first attracted her to the site. “I am a nature lover and I spend a lot of time gardening. I truly enjoy the outdoors and when we came out here the first time, I fell in love.”

The property itself is absolutely breathtaking with its jaw-dropping views and natural terrain. Set on four and a half acres, the site includes a 60-foot cliff, which overlooks the blue-green waters of the Guadalupe River; a cliff into which the Nibling home was ultimately constructed. Ken admits he and Hope are impulse buyers. “We both felt an urging to buy the property, but we figured we were being too spontaneous. The next morning, we woke up and each of us still had Cordillera on our minds, so we decided to go back for another look. On the third day, we said, let’s take it! Without a doubt, this has been our most impulsive purchase – and our most expensive – but by far, it’s been the best decision we’ve ever made for ourselves.” The Niblings, who have a grown son and daughter, excitedly bought the property, but didn’t do anything with it for two years. Ken knew he wasn’t ready for retirement and thought it was too early to build. Before long, however, the couple decided they couldn’t wait. “We wanted to be able to enjoy this place now so we began interviewing builders,” Ken said. That’s when Ray Stadler of Stadler Custom Homes walked into their lives. “The thing that stuck out right away about Ray was that he was concerned with what we wanted,” Hope said. “He wanted to create what we thought our ideal dream home would be like, not what he thought it should be,” Ken agreed. “Plus, we had to do this long distance and we needed to be able to trust the person on the other end of the phone. We just felt we could put our faith in Ray.” According to Ray, creating the Niblings’ three-level, four bedroom home was a welcomed break from the norm. “Designer Gustavo Arredondo provided the framework for the house. This is a unique piece of property so we were up against some challenges from the beginning,” Ray said. “But when I looked at it, all I saw was potential. You can do anything with a flat piece of land, but it’s much more fun to take a complicated lot and make something cool with it.” Soon, Ray, Ken and Hope began the daunting task of creating their ideal retirement home – as a team. “For us, building this house was an awesome experience,” Ken beamed. “For some couples, building a home can put a strain on the relationship, but Hope and I had more fun than anything. We came to the site every two or three weeks and it was rare that we saw something that wasn’t close to what we wanted and when we did, we told Ray and he made the necessary changes. He was so patient with us.”

Ray joked, “These two hold the record for plan revisions. We made a lot of modifications and adjustments along the way. Bringing everything together, especially from 300 miles away, was quite an undertaking. Ken and Hope really are the nicest people, though, so it was a piece of cake.” While Ray set out to construct the Niblings’ home, Ken and Hope went shopping. “We went to auctions and bought antiques for this house and put them in storage,” Ken said, joking that they had seven storage rooms filled to the brim with things for the new house. “When we unpacked everything here, it was like Christmas,” said Hope, a self-proclaimed antique fanatic. “It has been a real thrill to see this house come together and make it a home.” Thanksgiving of 2010 brought much to be thankful for – the completion

of the Niblings’ custom dream home. But in spite of Ray’s promise that constructing the elaborate 6,300 sq. foot home was easy, nothing about this three-story speaks to simplicity. As Hope will tell you, the Niblings’ home was built with family visits in mind, which resulted in a unique design that is both functional and elegant, but also one that required a lot of attention to detail. Three levels, all carefully crafted to enhance privacy, have created an intricate labyrinth of rooms that make for one amazing Hill Country home. Upon entering the Nibling residence, two things are immediately made clear –Ken and Hope love the Lord and they love a good view. The front entryway, finished with a beautiful wrought-iron glass door, opens to a foyer with a huge window that allows for a powerful view of the Texas Hill Country. It also houses Thomas Kinkade’s original artwork, Prince of Peace, a portrait of Jesus Christ. “This painting tells people who we are right away. We are Christians and we welcome the Holy Spirit into our home,” Ken and Hope commented, with Ray adding, “When they say Christian, they mean it. It’s a way of life for them, not just a title.” The foyer leads to two opposing hallways. One side of the house is dedicated to the master bedroom and Ken’s office, or, some might say, a golfer’s heaven. “I am a golf nut,” Ken admits. “And my office is a testament to my love of the game.” Indeed it is – an entire wall is lined with bookcases filled with golf memorabilia. Ken has played 120 major championship golf courses all over the world and has collected pin flags from 48 U.S. Open championships, each autographed by the winner of that particular tournament. He has flags signed by all the greats – Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods, to name a few. What Ken has done with his flags is truly remarkable – upon the suggestion of his daughter, he has put them behind glass…in the floor. “I was lamenting about what to do with my flags and Kristin said, put ‘em in the floor, dad. I think this is one of the coolest ideas of

the house. When I’m too old to play golf, I’ll come in here and reminisce,” Ken smiled. Just down the hallway is Ken and Hope’s master bedroom, complete with floor to ceiling windows left bare to rake in the view, both at night when the stars come out, and in the morning when the sun comes up. The bedroom has light switches on each side of the bed, an element Ken added to make the room feel fun, like a hotel room. Another fun feature: a television at the end of the bed which rises out of a fabricated antique chest that matches the headboard and end tables. The room is accentuated by two unique lamps with colors and textures brought out by a unique faux painting technique in the bedroom’s treyed ceiling, a theme that is carried throughout the home by Kevin and Ben Ayres’ delicate work. The master bathroom is exquisite in its own right with stained glass windows, rounded ceilings and separate toilets, closets and sinks. On the other end of the foyer is the family room, where the Niblings spend most of their time. Arched doorways and framed wooden window panes as well as uniquely accented ceilings, as seen throughout the house, add to the overall ambiance. The open, airy feel of the family room is magnified by a luminous skylight that centers on a woodbeamed ceiling. A prominent, stone fireplace stretches from tiled floor to vaulted ceiling, making a bold statement of elegance in the corner of the room. Nevertheless, the family room, in all its glory, can not compete with Hope’s kitchen, which can comfortably seat an astounding 19 people. “I like to cook and entertain so my focus was on the kitchen,” said Hope. “I am a full-time grandma and we have a lot of family. When they come to see us, we want to have them a good time.” The kitchen, separated from the family room by an immense, semi-circle stone bar with granite countertops, has two striking features. First, a massive wooden round table surrounded by hand-painted chairs with a Tuscan theme is set into the side wall. Also, stonework above the stove has an inscription that reads, “Villa di Esperanza,” which literally means House of Hope in Italian. “It only seemed right that we should name the house after Hope,” Ken said of his wife of thirty years.

On the other side of the kitchen is the formal dining room, which was designed around a round table Ken and Hope purchased for the new house. “We thought, hey, why not, a round dining room,” Ken laughed. Centering on the table is a dome cut ceiling, refined with a faux finish. A colossal antique cabinet stands on one side of the room, set into a wall cut specifically for that piece, a wall shared by Ken’s modest wine cellar. The back of the house is dedicated to three bedroom suites, as the Niblings like to call them. Each room, with its own bathroom, is on its own floor and all but one has a private patio. One room even sits adjacent to a game room, complete with coffee maker, microwave, big screen television and a playroom for kids. The outside of the Nibling home is just as inviting as the inside with a multi-level feel and the opportunity for incredible stargazing and bird-watching. Lush landscape by Acacia frames the yard, which leads to a nature trail, Hope’s garden and a play area for children. River access is just a few feet away, where Hope and Ken have set up a fire pit so they can enjoy evenings by the water.

Also outside is a split-level pool complete with a tranquil waterfall and fountain. “Originally, we didn’t want a pool, but Shelley Skains suggested a spool, which is a pool with jets and the potential to become a spa or Jacuzzi when it’s heated.” There is also an outdoor sitting area with a fireplace and big screen television. Ken and Hope still live in Katy and don’t plan to move to Cordillera Ranch for several more years, but they plan on heading West as often as they can. “It’s three hours from door to door so we can just hop in the car and come here whenever we want,” Ken said. In addition to a lovely new home they will enjoy for the rest of their lives, Ken and Hope Nibling have forged a life-long friendship with their builder. “This house turned out far better than we ever expected and we would have never guessed we would find a true friend in the man behind the magic, Mr. Ray Stadler.” “The most satisfying thing for me is to strike a good relationship with clients and then do other things with them outside the usual realm of a professional relationship. I have that type of relationship with Ken and Hope and I’m grateful for it.” Yes, it’s the stuff that dreams are made of.
