Something has changed. There is a tangible difference in the economic vibe permeating various industries, from small business to large world-wide conglomerates. Business owners seem to be making an emphatic statement: real confidence is back and the pent-up anxiety that’s driven decision-making for the past decade may be easing. The past three months have seen the Dow rapidly blow past the 20,000 mark and the housing industry seems to be strengthening after six years of a sputtering, sluggish recovery from the Great Recession. However, some may not have even noticed given all of the political fighting that’s dominated the headlines — don’t look now, but business is booming. Those effects are visible in the Cordillera Ranch market as well. It’s been 10 years since sales activity has hit the levels exhibited in the past few months. An easy indicator: in less than twelve months, available homes on the market have dropped by over 60% to less than 25 homes currently available (with five of those in active option). It’s been over 10 years since available home inventory was this low — all driven by a surge in sales activity over the past year. In the past six months, combined home and lot sales in Cordillera Ranch have jumped 71% versus the same period from the prior year and the recent surge of contracted but unclosed sales aren’t even included yet in that figure. New home starts in the community are no exception with over 30 homes currently under construction and 48 more in design review signaling an impending wave in new construction on the horizon. The demand is consistently spread throughout the community with sales in and around the golf course area as well as on some of the premier hilltop properties, ranch estates and The Springs. The boom in activity has also tightened the supply of available rent homes in the community to zero — something that’s in great demand for the many families under construction on a new home. While some of the factors for the recent surge may be debated by economists (and politicians), there is no doubt that a release of pent-up demand following the election, combined with long-overdue pro-business policy shifts from the new administration and an energy sector that’s been gaining steam as oil prices have doubled in the past 12 months have all driven the positive activity. With some analysts forecasting a $70/barrel oil by the end of the year and the Dow surpassing 23,000, it appears this could just be the beginning of a very strong rebound year — a rebound that was supposed to have occurred years ago. Now let’s just hope that the politicians can get out of the way and let it happen. Here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2017! Cheers,

For Joanne and Aldon Williams, the journey to Cordillera spans islands, years and destiny. Both were born in the tropical, sugar-beached Caribbean and spent their youth in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. They were young teenagers attending different private schools when the junior high schoolers met. Joanne was 13 and Aldon was 15. The connection was intense and immediate. “It was love at first sight,” says Joanne, “We were inseparable.” CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 35
The young couple, both serious students, dated through the end of their freshman year of high school, when Aldon’s family moved to Florida. Joanne says the separation was heartbreaking and the two lost touch of each other. And life happened. Aldon graduated valedictorian of his Miami Florida high school receiving a 4-year academic scholarship to the University of Miami and another to their Medical School where he graduated in 1990. An internal medicine internship, a 3-year anesthesia residency and a 1-year fellowship in pain medicine followed. He earned board certifications in anesthesiology and pain medicine and began practicing medicine in South Texas 21 years ago. On her own trajectory, Joanne left the islands after high school and attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a degree in Psychology. Her career has included Merck Sharp & Dohme in Chicago before moving to Houston where she studied in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Houston. An internship for a not-for-profit ignited a passion for management and fundraising that led to work in the field of advancement for a variety of Houston not-for-profits including the Volunteer Center, Child Advocates (CASA), Council for Alcohol & Drugs, Houston and St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Systems. She was an active member of AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) and earned her certification as a professional fundraiser (CFRE). “I realized my dream of working in healthcare and doing what I love best, raising money. It was greatly fulfilling to

work on St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities Initiatives, advancing health in Houston-area neighborhoods, while raising money for the hospital’s $100 million capital campaign.” In total she spent 18 years in Houston and that’s where fate came calling. After no contact and having not seen each other in 25 years, they unexpectedly ran into each other at an event. Joanne says, “We considered this chance meeting, serendipitous. It was love at first sight, a second time around, and it felt it was our destiny to be together.” Aldon adds, “It was totally random and the chance of a lifetime.” The couple wed in 2007. There is a treasured token from long ago says Aldon, “I kept a photo of us always. It was taken at Joanne’s 8th grade graduation.” A lot has changed since those days in St. Thomas and a lot hasn’t. Joanne says, “We were best friends then and are still best friends.” While apart, Aldon and Joanne had each married and had children. “We are a close family and love spending time and traveling together,” says Joanne. Aldon’s daughter Brittany works for Chrysler in Charlotte, North Carolina and is engaged to be married in 2018. Like her father, she graduated from the University of Miami, before earning an MBA at Tulane University and is currently working on a Doctor of Management in Organizational Development and Change. His son Cameron studied engineering at Louisiana State University and lives in Houston. Joanne’s daughter Jessica, an aspiring author, graduated from

Manhattanville College and lives in Westchester, New York working in advertising for DAC. Her son Alexander graduated from Penn State with an acting degree and works as an associate producer at FSB Chicago. In the future, Alex plans to start his own production company. When not at Cordillera, the ocean-loving couple live on South Padre Island. “On South Padre we live on the beach and cherish living on the water, seeing sunrises and sunsets each day. We love to chase sunsets and have taken hundreds, if not thousands, of sunset photographs,” says Joanne. But for all their love of the sea, the Hill Country has had its own special appeal. “We have always loved the Texas Hill Country. Over the years, while visiting close friends Carla Cooper and Jim Puetz who are members of Cordillera Ranch, we began a search for a place to eventually retire. It was again, love at first sight,” says Joanne. “Thanks to Carla and Jim, we were introduced to Cordillera. We purchased a lot on our first visit in 2008 and joined The Club.” The golf course was a huge draw for Aldon, a self-described “golf-aholic” who started playing 21 years ago. As a member of the MGA, Aldon has played in every C-Star (except one) since the beginning. “I fell in love with Cordillera’s golf course and we would drive up from the Valley a couple times each month just to play,” says Aldon. On Sunday afternoons, they would head back to the Valley.
With each visit, the couple’s sadness to have to return home after their Cordillera Ranch weekend escapes grew. “Our original plan was to continue to work full-time in the Valley and drive out on weekends to play golf and enjoy The Club. We were not planning to build until closer to actual retirement. We had fallen in love with Cordillera and couldn’t wait to get back out on the next visit,” says Aldon. On a drive home one Sunday, they agreed they wanted to have a home at Cordillera Ranch to enjoy now rather than wait until retirement. They began the process of building in 2015. “We worked very closely with our builder,” says Aldon who spends a lot of time in his outdoor kitchen. Joanne agrees, “We had a great building experience and enjoyed creating our dream home at Cordillera. We designed our home to be warm and inviting, built for entertaining with lots of open and outdoor living spaces.” The couple has fully enjoyed the Cordillera life. They have participated in special events such as CTRC fundraisers, wine dinners and a recent wine trip, as well as golf tournaments, kayaking, utilizing the handgun range and the trails. “As a Hill Country community, Cordillera’s quality of life and unique offerings is very appealing to us,” Aldon says, “I love the sense of tranquility; it’s quiet and peaceful. I love nature — it’s so restful after a long work day. To have the golf course just a golf cart hop or a short walk away is priceless.” Joanne adds, “As we settle into our new home, I hope to become more involved at Cordillera as well as
in the local community. I believe we are called to do things in our lives. I’m open-minded and looking for that next calling.” The couple and their dogs still get a good share of beach time. “We will still be commuters for a while and not living full-time at Cordillera. I will continue to work in the Rio Grande Valley three days a week, however, I’ve also opened an office in the San Antonio Advanced Spinal Pain Management, and started seeing patients one to two days each week. Eventually I plan to open an office in Boerne and be closer to home,” says Aldon. He adds, “Fortunately, I love what I do and I’m looking forward to helping more patients in the San Antonio area effectively address their pain issues and improve their quality of life.” When not at Cordillera or South Padre, Aldon and Joanne love to travel and feel very fortunate to have visited many places together in just 10 years. Joanne says, “We are especially fond of Italy and the Amalfi Coast, and have returned to a favorite spot there several times. Tuscany is also one of our favorite places to explore and we have named our home ‘Villa Bramasole’ for the villa in Cortona, Italy. Cordillera is our ‘Tuscany’ in the Hill Country! This year, we are planning a trip to the Galapagos, and we still have a long bucket list of places to visit, hopefully when Al retires!” Whenever retirement comes doesn’t impact Aldon’s gratitude, “It’s a path to retirement, to get to enjoy it while still working is a dream come true.”

The two of you have a shared work history. How, when and where did you first work together? AA: I first met Graham House almost three years ago while serving at a steakhouse in downtown Houston. Being the lead trainer in the development of an expanding corporation, Graham noticed my particular skill sets in service and attention to detail when conducting a training course for a new hire. Graham invited me to join his team at Royal Oaks Country Club to better his service staff for the Bistro and bring the team to the next level. I took his offer, not only to better myself in a new environment, but also to see what I was able to bring to the club industry. On my first day at the club, Graham showed me around and introduced me to key staff members that would help hone my sense of training as well knowledge of service. After a year and a half at Royal Oaks Country Club, under his mentoring and my service knowledge, I’ve completed four manuals with standards on steps

of service, raising morale in the service team, raising Member/Guest relations as well as decreasing member complaints pertaining to service by 90 percent. I look forward to continued service with such a great person for the years to come. How did you both come to The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch? GH: Antonio saw the posting for the food and beverage position at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. We discussed that he is one of the best floor and training managers in the industry and probably not ready for this position just yet. Antonio corrected me and said, “Graham you always told me to interview for club opportunities because you never know where the interview and opportunity will lead to.” I stood corrected and Antonio accepted the new Service Director position at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. During this process and discussions with Monty, the new Clubhouse & Lodging Manager position opened up as well and all it took was driving past the gate and
over the hill to be sold on the opportunity to join Cordillera Ranch. What makes your colleagues and team members an asset to The Club? AA: Without a great set of team members and colleagues, this club wouldn’t be in the great standing it’s in now. They help shape and form The Club experience to make it a great place for members to want to be a part of. GH: Without these assets quite frankly, we would not have the caliber of club that we have. Our employee partners are the ones that make The Club experience different and unique from anyone else in the business. How did you choose your occupation? AA: After going to school for computer science and working in the service industry, I found that my passion to take care of patrons grew more than my wanting to progress in my computer studies. I

strove to work hard and meet goals given by my management. With this mindset, I complete every objective before me, which landed me here in this beautiful club filled with wonderful members. GH: My parents were members of Spindletop Hall Club in Lexington, Kentucky and I started working there as a lifeguard. Naturally I loved interacting with the same faces every day and getting to know the members as family. I never looked back and have been in the club business my whole life. What has been your most rewarding professional experience? AA: Being able to train new employees to exceed members’ expectations and seeing the greatest outcome of the entire vision; a genuine smile, happy-todo-it attitude, and most of all, a friendly and engaging mentality. GH: I take pride with how many people I have influenced in my career through training, education and growing,
and developing countless front line employees into club management careers. What has been your greatest professional challenge? AA: Having to remind myself when I need to stop and go home. When I see something needing to be addressed, I have the mindset to get it completed before I head home or until I feel it’s at a good standing. GH: Getting that balance between work and family. When you love your family and your career, both tend to overlap into each other. What do you like most about working at Cordillera Ranch? AA: Being able to be welcomed by the employees and members with a warmhearted greeting. GH: The members and employee partners have provided an amazingly warm welcome and acceptance into their club.
What are your hobbies and interests? AA: Bicycling, hiking, playing my guitar and camping. GH: Boating, antique and muscle cars. Favorite quote or motto? This year marks the 10th anniversary of Lady Bird Johnson’s passing on July 11, 2007. Her lifelong work in highway beautification and plant conservation is legendary, with native wildflowers holding a special place in her heart — and in the hearts of those who work year-round to preserve them. Each spring, Texans eagerly await the explosion of color that marks the beginning of wildflower season, which peaks around the second week of April. Front and center are the iconic Texas Bluebonnets (Lupinis texensis), cheerfully commingling with Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja foliolosa), Indian Blanket or Firewheel (Gaillardia pulchella), Purple Horsemint (Monarda citriodora), Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), native Phlox (Phlox pilosa) and one of Lady Bird’s favorites — the Bluebell (Eustoma exaltatum ssp. russellianum).

John Thomas, founder and president of Wildseed Farms near Fredericksburg, has worked in the field (literally) of wildflower promotion, education and conservation since founding the family’s working wildflower farm in 1983. With more than 200 acres of wildflower fields alone, the compound consisting of a nursery, walking trails, a gift shop with countless seed packets and more attracts upwards of 350,000 visitors a year, most of whom leave with a newfound education and respect for wildflowers. Thomas says that the farm’s role in wildflower conservation is “to teach people how to grow them from seed, when to plant, where to plant, when to mow and how to maintain them so that they reseed and return each year. That’s what we preach here.” It’s a message that Thomas has taken on the road through the years, presenting wildflower seminars throughout the U.S. to agencies who want to model their highways, byways and national parks after the state that puts on the biggest wildflower show on earth. “They’re not talking Bluebonnets,” says Thomas, “They’re talking about what flower can they plant that will produce a lot of color like we have here.” And wildflowers aren’t just a pretty face. “They’re the best thing you could have for the environment,” says Karen H. Clary, PhD, director of plant conservation at the University of Texas-Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. “Native plants are the best adapted. They have been living in these areas for at least 10,000 years, evolving to withstand drought and extreme changes in temperature, living in co-evolution with insects, pollinators, the soil and the water system, and they know exactly how to do it.” Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that wildflowers are indestructible. “Some endangered plants are actually wildflowers,” adds Clary. “Here in Texas we have about 440 rare plants, of which about 33 are on the endangered species list, and a portion of those are wildflowers.” The Texas Poppy-mallow (Callirhoe scabriuscula), for example, “is extremely rare and on the endangered species list, and it’s right out there on the roadside, blooming away.” “One way that we help to save endangered plants is to collect and bank the
seeds in case there is an extinction event,” says Clary. “We work with Texas Parks and Wildlife and other organizations to educate people as to the importance of conserving rare plants and how to manage them if you have them on your property.” Education, outreach and classes on native plants help to keep people aware of “why it’s important to conserve them. They are the proverbial canary in the coal mine, because they are often good indicators of good habitat that we might want to preserve.” A publication by Texas Parks and Wildlife entitled A List of the Rare Plants of Texas, is online at tpwd.texas.gov/publications. A very informative book is The Rare Plants of Texas (Texas A & M Press). The 284-acre Wildflower Center, founded by Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hayes in 1982, is the only 100 percent native plant family garden in Texas, with more than 800 species of Texas native plants growing in the gardens, making it the most diverse collection of its kind in North America. “We have actual formal gardens where we grow wildflowers that are in season throughout the year,” adds Clary. They also have meadows, fields and areas called the wildlands where “all kinds of wildflowers bloom just naturally.” It’s those natural beauties that make Texas, particularly the Hill Country, a mecca for flower lovers who start driving the highways at the first sprout of a Bluebonnet or Bluebell. John Thomas, for one, hopes that increased awareness will encourage the public to leave those roadside riots of color alone to live and grow in peace for future generations to enjoy. “I remember when school wildflower projects would consist of teachers instructing students to ‘Go out and pick 25 species of wildflowers.’ Now, with iPhones, it’s ‘Go out and take pictures of 25 species.’” From a conservation standpoint, that’s a good thing.

CORDILLERA RANCH FAQ’s, Myths, Rumors and Answers to Such With the increased number of home and lot purchases along with the continued building boom at Cordillera Ranch, we wanted to address some items related to home planning, construction and activities governed by the Property Owners Association. What’s the best sequence of events for purchasing a lot and building a home? 1) Select a lot and review the Design Guidelines related to that property before closing. Having a Preferred Builder look at the property at this time is also a good idea as he can confirm home placement related to building setbacks, heritage trees, topography, privacy, prevailing breezes, coveted sunrise/sunset orientations, etc. Cordillera Ranch Preferred Builders have the clearest understanding of the Design Guidelines and will advocate for you in meetings with architect/designer and the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). 2) Upon closing, meet with your selected Preferred Builder and his architect/designer for initial concepts related to item one above. 3) Meet with the ARC, Preferred Builder and architect/designer on you property before starting any specific design/architectural work to receive an approval of your concept and general home placement. It’s important that you follow the procedures in the Design Guidelines for review and approval by the ARC prior to commencing any construction on the property. What is involved with the Architectural Review Committee process in approving my building plans? During the design process, you and your design/construction team will meet with the ARC a minimum of three times for review and approval. 1) Site Analysis Conference: The purpose of this conference is to discuss the lot and its characteristics prior to the commencement of design. 2) Preliminary Design Conference: The purpose of this conference is to assure that initial design concepts are in accordance with the objectives of Cordillera Ranch, that the design responds to the specific conditions of the lot and adjoining properties and to discuss construction procedures and requirements. 3) Final Design Review: The purpose of this conference is to confirm final design plans, materials and details.

Is outdoor burning of cleared trees or underbrush allowed at Cordillera Ranch? The short answer is “Possibly.” Kendall County monitors outdoor burning in conjunction with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Texas Administrative Code rules for outdoor burning. The Kendall County Fire Marshal’s Office asks that if you plan on burning, you check online at www.co.kendall. tx.us to make sure there is not a “burn ban” in place at the time you are burning. If there’s no burn ban in place and you would like to burn, you MUST contact Cordillera Ranch at 830-336-3570 to request a Burn Permit. Kendall County burn bans that are “OFF” do not automatically authorize Cordillera Ranch property owners to burn. Cordillera Ranch POA must approve ALL burn requests and will confirm whether the Kendall County burn ban is in effect. Cordillera Ranch may be more restrictive than the County and reserves the right to deny burn permits without prior notice. There are many factors considered in approving a burn permit including, but not limited to, wind and weather conditions/ forecasts, ground moisture, fire breaks, accessibility of emergency response vehicles, surrounding vegetation, tree lines, accessibility of water, etc. Under no circumstances will approval be granted if an adequate supply of water is not present. MEMBER SERVICES New technologies are a way of life these days and although upgrades can be exciting, they can also present a host of challenges and a test in patience. If you are like me, you see “software update” on your smart phone and think, “How long can I ignore this?” Once I download the update, I’m usually lost and somewhat frustrated for the first couple of days, but then I become accustomed to the new layout and features and I ask myself how I ever functioned with the old version. Last summer, we made the decision to move our software platform in a new direction. Several of the applications we were using weren’t integrated, so our operations weren’t as seamless as they could be. There is a third-party charge for using a credit card, but it will give you a choice. Our servers will be able to enter your orders at the table using a tablet and seamlessly integrate with the rest of the system. This is a good example of how technology can improve your experience at The Club by expediting your orders to the kitchen and allowing our servers to spend more time on the floor addressing your needs. We’ll do our best to release these changes slowly to give you time to digest this new technology while getting our team acclimated as well. March marks the beginning of the busy spring golf season here in South Texas. It is hard to believe it has been one year since we completed the bunker renovation project, and the playability and beauty of the bunkers is excellent. Not only is it a great time to come out and play with some friends or clients when the golf course is in fantastic shape, but we also have a number of events that highlight the tournament calendar. The 11th Annual Cordillera Cup will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26. This Ryder Cup-style team competition is the most popular tournament we have amongst our members and thus continues to grow in numbers every year. Last year, the Hill Team cruised to their very first victory in the history of the event. The format is always fun, and being part of a team is what makes this event so special. Members must register on-line for the tournament this year at www.clubsofcordilleraranch.com. We also will be hosting our Major’s series of One Day Member-Guests and our Master’s One Day Member-Guests will kick us off. The tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 7 and is a great way to bring up to three guests to showcase all of the beautiful Cordillera Ranch facilities and incredible Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. Check with the Golf Shop at 830.336.4653 for format and details. The Blockbuster Demo Day is set for Saturday, April 8 from 9:00am -3:00pm. The CWGA will be hosting the Fiesta Tournament on April 12-13. This event is always very “festive” to say the least and the ladies always have so much fun! We are excited to be playing in this great inter-club event with some of the finest private clubs in Texas competing. April also means the return of the Valero Texas Open here in San Antonio on April 21-24. Golf San Antonio has done a terrific job with this event in their efforts to make this one of the best on the PGA TOUR. Valero continues to sponsor the event and helps make it the leading tournament on the PGA TOUR with over $10 million going to charity last year. Our very own Jimmy Walker will be playing again this year so I hope you will consider supporting him, and head over to watch the best players in the world compete at the TPC San Antonio, AT&T Oaks Course. The El Compadre Member-Member will take place April 2829. We have moved the tournament to a Friday-Saturday format and will have the traditional Casino Party on Saturday night at the conclusion of the event. Here in the Texas Hill Country, we like our things in pairs — a pair of boots, pocket aces in a Texas Hold ‘Em game, two breakfast tacos to start the morning. Seems the PGA TOUR also likes delivering a pair of marquee events to our area — the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play and the Valero Texas Open. For the second straight year, Austin Country Club will be the site of the WGC-Dell Match Play. The tournament, which pits the top 64 players (based on the Official World Golf Rankings), occurs March 22-26, and already is the toughest ticket to get in these parts. This past January, the PGA TOUR announced tickets were sold out … three months prior to the first match. Yet there’s a glimmer of hope for those wanting to see the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and the other top names in golf. Those who have yet to purchase tickets can visit www.DellMatchPlay.com and sign up to be added to a waiting list in the event additional tournament tickets become available. Limited hospitality opportunities also remain. In addition to McIlroy, Spieth and the 2016 Match Play Champion Day, those scheduled to play on the Pete Dye-designed ACC layout include Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Cordillera Ranch member Jimmy Walker. The Dell Match Play field is divided into 16 four-player groups. Competitors will play round-robin matches within their group on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Players receive one point for a victory, a half-point for a draw and zero points for a loss. The player with the best record will advance to the Round of 16 for single-elimination match play. The Round of 16 will be played Saturday morning, followed by the Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The Semifinals will be Sunday morning, followed by

the Championship Match and Consolation Match on Sunday afternoon. If you can’t make it to Austin, no worries as the PGA Tour will be in San Antonio a month later for the Valero Texas Open. Walker and 2016 champion Charley Hoffman are slated to tee it up April 20-23 on the TPC San Antonio, AT&T Oaks Course. And it always seems the tournament has a knack for getting another crowd-pleaser in the field. In 2013, it was Rory McIlroy. In 2015, Dustin Johnson came to town. A year ago, Phil Mickelson made an appearance. Could this year mark Tiger Woods’ return to the Alamo City? It all depends on his balky back. Woods started this season with a positive outlook both physically and mentally, but has had to withdraw from several 2017 tournaments due of back spasms. Should he heal, the Valero Texas Open sits in a spot on this year’s TOUR schedule that would be beneficial for him — two weeks after The Masters and before his usual visits to the Wells Fargo Championship and The Players Championship. Woods’ only appearance at the Valero Texas Open was in 1996, when he finished third.

Walker, the 2015 Valero Texas Open champion, and other notable names will be chasing Hoffman, the defending champion, who fired rounds of 66-71-70-69—276 (-11) to win by one shot over Patrick Reed. It was Hoffman’s fourth win on TOUR, but admitted after the final round that it was his toughest. “You look on the PGA TOUR, the guys that lead on Saturday and Sunday rarely win,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it’s easier to come from behind. It’s that time again… to start planning for the summer! Camps keep kids active, enjoying the outdoors, learning to swim and having fun! The Clubs’ Summer Day Camp program offers something for everyone. Our primary goal is getting kids outdoors and learning to enjoy the many different activities found on the Ranch. We focus on getting kids excited about being in the Guadalupe River, the parks and experiencing nature, rather than simply keeping them occupied during the few months they’re not in school. Instead of watching movies or sitting in front of a computer screen, kids are tromping through the creek, playing games, learning to ride horses and identifying insects and plant species. When the kids get home after camp, they’re dirty, hungry and tired from a full day of activities. Our summer camp staff strive to have kids enjoy the physical and healthful benefits of experiencing the breeze, the sunlight and the sounds of being outdoors as well as staying physically active, socializing and learning new skills. When it comes down to it, camp is just plain fun! Our Learn to Swim program is back and we are excited to have Natalie Sales returning to teach all the kids how to swim. Our priority is getting kids comfortable in the water and learning to be proficient swimmers for our aquatics program during the summer. In recent years, many athletes have been embracing Pilates as a form of cross training to enhance performance and prevent injury. What has become an indispensable part of training programs of entire NFL teams, Olympians and athletes such as Tiger Woods and Roger Federer is equally accessible and beneficial to the athlete in all of us. Pilates is for anyone who wants to function pain free and at an optimal level. It is both diverse and adaptable, and that is the beauty of Pilates! If you’re looking for ways to maximize your personal performance in your chosen sport and are willing to dedicate time to regular Pilates sessions, measurable change and progression is inevitable. The workout is designed to improve posture by strengthening the back and abdominal muscles, minimize stress and back pain and increase flexibility. Pilates exercises can be practiced on a mat or on Pilates equipment. The most commonly used apparatus is the Pilates reformer, which uses springs, bars, straps and a pulley system to provide a very effective, efficient and challenging workout. Tamra Ratner practices reformer Pilates twice a week at The Club. “I have utilized Pilates to strengthen my core and leg muscles, and help with my balance. I’ve seen a dramatic effect on my horse-

back riding. My riding posture and balance have improved and my leg connection to my horse has never been better!” Every sport has its own distinctive pattern of movement. Some sports use certain muscles repeatedly while underutilizing others. A common form of sport injury is related to repetitive use of certain muscles combined with lack of stability in an opposing muscle. Sports such as golf, tennis and baseball are more one-sided in nature, making muscle balance especially important to decrease risk of injury and enjoy pain-free play. A primary goal in Pilates exercises is to work muscles in pairs. This promotes balance and coordination between muscle groups while increasing flexibility. When muscles are balanced and lengthened, they are able to move through full potential range for whatever activity is taking place. Cordillera Ranch member Bobbie Sanborn says, “I love Pilates because it makes my back and core stronger. That strength makes me better at everything from skiing to tennis to improving my posture. My favorite thing about Pilates is that it creates a strong connection between mind and body, and I am much more aware of my body and recognize when it’s out of balance.” The practice of Pilates is truly a journey to better health and well-being and can be enjoyed by a broad range of the population. Beyond enhancing your athleticism, a student of Pilates can take the lessons learned during a session and transfer it to everyday movement.
Cordillera Ranch member and avid golfer Connie Proudfoot credits her ten years of Pilates practice for her body awareness and her ability to enjoy an active lifestyle. “Pilates has taught me how to move while going about my daily life, preventing injury and using my muscles and joints efficiently. I believe it has been instrumental in keeping me fit and surgery free.” The exercises learned in a Pilates program can “mimic” the movements practiced in your sport of choice and improve your performance; most importantly, when that sport is living life to its fullest.

The emphasis was on the CTRC’s ambitious goal to obtain two Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grants from the National Cancer Institute that could in turn lead to federal funding of up to $12.5 million for each SPORE. That evening, Cordillera residents stepped up and joined a Research Circle at CTRC that provided $100,000 to seed this vital initiative — a move that amazed Ian M. Thompson, Jr., M.D., CTRC’s director at the time, and other cancer center physicians and scientists in attendance. With the CTRC matching each donation dollar for dollar for the SPORE initiative, the final tally was a stunning $200,000. “We feel so blessed to have such a wonderful institution as the CTRC so close to our Cordillera neighborhood,” says Jan Newton, “where many Cordillera friends have supported the CTRC in many other ways as well.” Fellow host Phil Pfeiffer adds that it wasn’t surprising to see such a community show of support. “Many of our friends and neighbors have directly benefited from the care provided by this world class cancer center.” “I always purchase tables to the CTRC big annual fundraisers,” says Debbie Pepper, director of membership for The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch and former trustee board member of the CTRC Council. Haven for Hope Out of the mouths of babes can come a great idea for doing good. For Haven for Hope, a San Antonio-based charity addressing the problem of homelessness in Bexar County, that great idea was in the form of unused soap and shampoo that can help to give a fresh start to those in need. It all began at a family dinner conversation at the home of Justin Pawl, chief investment officer at Covenant. The theme was giving back to the community, and “as we had hoped, the topic resonated with Savannah, 11, and Gavin, 8,” says Pawl. A brainstorming session ultimately landed on collecting soap and other toiletries for the Haven for Hope campus, where the homeless can come for a shower, meal and safe sleeping place for the night. “I can’t remember which one of them hit on the idea of collecting toiletries,” says Pawl, “but that is what they decided on, and Soap4Hope was born.” Bill Greehey, founder and chairman of Haven for Hope explains, “Most of us take a bar of soap or a bottle of shampoo for granted, but many at Haven for Hope have lost everything, and they are so appreciative of even the most basic things in life. Providing showers is an important first step in helping the chronically homeless regain their self-esteem. And that’s when the magic begins! We have 93 partners providing 150 different social services on campus — everything from legal services, mental health services and ID recovery to GED, financial literacy and parenting classes to daycare, medical, dental and eye care — Haven for Hope provides the transformative services to help these individuals and families to go on to live happy, independent lives. And it is amazing to see such caring young people like Savannah and Gavin getting involved and doing their part to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. With a $16 million budget and serving approximately 1500 men, women and children every day, I can assure you that every contribution helps.” Cordillera Ranch and UTSA are the biggest and most regular contributors to the Soap4Hope program. In the Cordillera community, residents Ben and Terry Smith spearhead the collection process of any size of soap, shampoo and other toiletries, including those personal-size amenities brought back from residents’ travels. “I was so impressed with these two young people giving of their time to make the lives of those less fortunate a little brighter,” says Terry Smith. Adds Pawl: “I think it is every parent’s dream to see their children recognize how blessed they are and in turn, volunteer their own time and energy to help those who are less fortunate. Although it is a relatively small contribution to all of the wonderful services that Haven for Hope provides to the community, the children are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Each morning Paula Alexander wakes up to a serene view of the Texas Hill Country before making her way to one of her favorite spaces in her house: the kitchen. Here, beneath soaring ceilings and surrounded by creamy walls and floors, she pours a cup of coffee and follows the early morning sunlight through the adjoined dining and great rooms where she settles by a crackling fire and allows the same familiar thought to sink in.

“I look around and cannot believe that we live in such a wonderful place,” she says of the sprawling Cordillera Ranch home she shares with her husband, Rod Alexander. A seamless collaboration between Damon Christofilis and Jason Hurt of Christofilis Custom Homes, architect Gustavo Arredondo, and interior designer Barb Burger of Studio Domaine, the home is a dream-come-true for the Alexanders who relocated from the Texas Panhandle where they operated an oilfield service company for 38 years. After selling the company and saying goodbye to all they knew, they decided to build their retirement home on the one-acre golf course lot in Cordillera Ranch they purchased as an investment a decade ago at the encouragement of their sonin-law who also lives in the exclusive community with their daughter and two grandsons. Despite initial nerves, today they couldn’t be more pleased with their

home, whether it’s just the two of them or when their two grown children and their families –– including four energetic grandsons ranging in age from 3 to 12 –– are visiting. “Rod and I had never built a home before, only several remodels, and we were apprehensive,” says Paula. “We first met Damon back in 2006 when he came to see our recently-purchased lot, and at the time, we were still uncertain about developing it. In 2016, when we decided to build, Damon reassured us that this would be a fun process and they would be there for us all along the way. Damon and Jason did exactly what they said.” The Alexanders say Christofilis’ views and thoughts about their property didn’t change at all from 2006 to 2016. One thing that did change was the couple’s style. “When we first met in the architect’s office, the Alexanders were convinced they wanted a true Old World look for their home –– heavy finishes, antiqued glazed walls, jewel tones,” recalls Burger, who witnessed the couple’s preferences migrate from Old World traditional to a more updated, contemporized style. “What was envisioned at those initial meetings was not where we ended up. She didn’t want anything heavy, anything overly decorated. She wanted things light and airy. Very functional, but a clean, bright environment.” The two-story, 6,600-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home features a multipurpose game room and bar, study and an oasis-like outdoor living space. Working from the outside in to create a cohesive look and style, Burger edited the originally selected materials to better suit the couple’s true tastes. On the outside, a simple mix of neutral-toned Mesa sawn and rough cut limestone, stucco and a four-color blend barrel tile roof creates texture and character while providing a seamless transition to the inside, defined by ivory walls, stonework and tumbled travertine floors set in a Versailles pattern. Moments break up the creamcolored palette like the wide plank, brushed gray hickory wood flooring in the study and dining room. But overall, there’s a monochromatic theme of black, white and gray at play throughout the home. Other than a few pops of bright orange on the umbrellas shading the pool furniture and the bedding in the grandkids’ bunk room –– a tribute to Oklahoma State University –– Burger says there was an effort to keep everything in the home very neutral. To create the home’s light, clean and airy feel, the designer relied on fewer, higher impact items

–– and almost everything in the home, save a few reupholstered pieces, was bought new. For example, two large étagères displaying carefully selected accessories serve as the focal points in the great room. Decorative light fixtures were selected for their size, clean lines and distinctive styles –– particularly in the study where a rustic, contemporary fixture creates a strong yet simple statement. Because the Alexanders wanted to take full advantage of their spectacular Hill Country view, the house was designed in a U-shape, surrounding the pool with windows all around. Now, walking from their master bedroom to the game room at the opposite end of the house, they are graced with unending outdoor views. The spacious kitchen, featuring a barrel ceiling finished in brick that takes inspiration from the Mexican boveda-style ceilings, is the heart of the home and maintains a fluid connection with the dining and great rooms. In the game room, a would-be man cave is reimagined with a clever layered application of golf art, memorabilia and empty frames and a pop-up ceiling with metal panels finished in a copper patina. “The game room and entertainment space is phenomenal,” says Christofilis. “It is the space that they want to take you to when you come into their home to uncork a bottle of wine and catch up. It is a really comfortable space to socialize.” Attention to detail shows in well thought out spaces designed for multiple interests and functions. For example, the Alexanders wanted a fun spot for sleepovers when their grandsons come to visit so there is a spacious bunk room upstairs featuring two sets of built-in bunk beds crafted with reclaimed barn wood. An outdoor oasis, designed by John Hackett of Dynamic Environments, unfolds off the back of the house where a covered outdoor kitchen, dining and lounge area surrounding a firepit leads down to an infinity-edge pool featuring a hot tub, waterfall, shallow deck and uninterrupted Hill Country views. In the end, the Alexanders say they couldn’t be more pleased with their home or the group of skilled professionals behind it who have all become close friends in the process. “Choosing Damon to build our home was the best decision, because along with him, he surrounded us with the very best team imaginable,” says Paula. “From start to finish the whole team has shown consideration, perfection, and true caring for mine and Rod’s vision. It instantly felt like home. It is everything we could ever have imagined.”

CARRYING ON After 17 years as Burdick & Christofilis, Ltd., a successful partnership that built more than 100 homes in Cordillera Ranch, Art Burdick and Damon Christofilis discuss their past and future. HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU BECOME PARTNERS?
DC: When Art first approached me in 2000 with a concept of forming a partnership, I was flattered because Burdick Custom Homes always been the gold standard in home building. He wanted to marry our names and experience –– to combine his name and reputation and match it with my knowledge of the Hill Country. He had his reputation to consider so it was a little bit of a risk on his part compared to mine, but it’s turned out great. AB: Burdick Homes declined numerous opportunities to build in Cordillera Ranch in its early years solely due to the distance and logistics involved. When I met Damon and we formed a partnership, Damon moved to Cordillera Ranch to be constantly on site, which I believe is vital. SINCE FORMING IN OCTOBER OF 2000, BURDICK & CHRISTOFILIS HAS BUILT A SOLID AND RESPECTED REPUTATION IN CORDILLERA RANCH. WHAT WILL EACH OF YOU BE DOING MOVING FORWARD?
DC: We recently started Christofilis Custom Homes and we are in the process of opening our fifth model home in Cordillera Ranch. My wife and I choose to live in each model home for two to four years. It is a vehicle that serves two purposes –– styles and trends are constantly changing and being in a fully living and breathing furnished home helps people visualize what they could have and it helps me get to know them. AB: Burdick Homes will carry forward the Burdick reputation for the next few decades. We anticipate building about 20 homes per year for the foreseeable future, which is our historical average. I will continue to refer people to Damon, but I have always said to choose a builder who is very active at Cordillera Ranch, and for that reason, I don’t anticipate Burdick Homes building there in the future. Damon has been a fantastic partner. I am very proud of the homes that he has built and the happy homeowners that he has. I know that he will have great success on his own, just as he has had with Burdick & Christofilis.
