As spring approaches, the hill country is just teasing us with weather that makes us want to spend as much time as we can outside. Take a look at our Calendar of Event section of this issue you will notice that we don’t even have enough room for events that happen outside of Cordillera Ranch. I hope you will notice all the different outdoor activities that will give you plenty of reasons to spend time outdoors with your family. This issue features one of our own who we all like to cheer for. Jimmy Walker is one of the most talented young players on the PGA Tour and when he’s not on the road you will likely see him working hard on his game at our golf course. Jimmy and his wife Erin are huge supporters of Cordillera Ranch and I know from talking to many of you that support is reciprocated. I hope you enjoy the story on Jimmy’s career path and what drives him to be successful in the tough world of professional golf. Many of you have given us positive feedback on how much you enjoy the Cordillera Ranch Living magazine. It is our mission to bring new ideas to each issue so that it always gives you something new that you are interested in hearing about. The best ideas for future issues will come from those of you who live and socialize in Cordillera Ranch. I encourage you to call or email me with any ideas you think will interest you and your fellow residents, members and property owners. Please don’t hesitate to send your feedback and ideas.

T

There are many great things happening in Cordillera Ranch this spring. In this issue we’ll give an update on the various activities and changes that are happening in the community and the club. As we begin to see the beautiful hill country spring weather, the rains we received this fall and winter should make this one of the best springs we have seen in quite some time. Now is a great time to show off everything about Cordillera Ranch.

The spring provides us an opportunity to continue the momentum the community gained last year in selling homes. We will host a few events beginning in March that will offer the opportunity to show off the community, the homes and the new clubhouse that opened last fall.

Open House March 27 and 28 – This is an opportunity to show off the homes that are available for sale in Cordillera Ranch. At this event, we will have many of the listed homes open for viewing for both Saturday and Sunday. If you already own a lot in Cordillera Ranch this may be an opportunity to get ideas or visit with our builders about what you want in your home. This event is the same weekend as the annual Cordillera Cup golf tournament so if you are thinking of coming into town for the weekend you will have time to accomplish both.

Spring Tour of Homes April 10, 11 and 17, 18 – Each spring the Greater San Antonio Builders Association (GSABA) presents their Spring Tour of Homes. Cordillera Ranch will participate as a “Key Community” in the event.

Cordillera Ranch Builders Fair May 22 and 23 – The builders fair has proven to be a great time for those of you who plan to build soon to spend a day or two meeting all of our preferred builders. During this weekend each of the preferred builders will have many of their homes open for touring and provide you an opportunity to discuss the building process, costs, planning and timelines for building your custom home.

The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

Update

The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch is pleased to introduce Monty Becton as the new General Manager. Monty brings 23+ years of experience in the private club industry at a number of exclusive clubs throughout the United States. He has been involved in the opening of numerous new clubhouse and golf facilities as well as overseen regional divisions of as many as 25 private clubs at one time. “In the last 5 years, I’ve watched the private club business become too corporate and driven only by the bottom line.” says Monty. “I got into this business because it was about delivering a member experience and that’s what I love about Cordillera Ranch, I have the opportunity to focus on the member experience again.” His experience, perspective on the club business and leadership skills make him a perfect fit to take The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch into the future. Monty is a graduate of Texas Tech University, served as the Chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Board of the College of Human Sciences, and was presented with the distinguished alumni award in 2004. Monty and his wife Patti will move to the Hill Country from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He will begin on March 1st and already has many fresh and exciting ideas that will help to continue to make this wonderful place even better.

This isn’t just any construction project, this is your home and there’s a lot on the line. The guidance and discernment must be exceptional, and the details exacting. Educational Programs in the Hill Country That Really Measure Up by Alison Turner

18 | MArch | April 2010

With such a large population of children in Cordillera Ranch, our residents are fortunate to have many excellent schools to choose from in the area. Choosing the right school will undoubtedly be one of the most important decisions you will make, as it is at secondary level that school will provide the springboard to launch your child into the world of higher education and ultimately the workplace. As you begin the process of choosing which school to send your children to in the fall here is an overview of a number of schools in the area. All have excellent track records but provide a number of different focuses and values, curriculum choices,

extracurricular activies and personal values to suit you and your family. Families move to this area for the small town feel, but they don’t sacrifice education standards. As you explore the many educational resources available to families at Cordillera Ranch, you will find there is no shortage in academic quality. Remember, finding the right school is about finding the school that responds to and matches the needs of your family.

Geneva School of Boerne The Geneva School of Boerne was formed in 1998 and began offering classes in 1999 to 13 students in grades K, 1st and 3rd. Today, Geneva serves 427 students in grades K-11. In 2004 the school moved to it's current location on a 33 acre campus just south of Boerne proper with easy access from I-10, making the school accessible to residents of Boerne, surrounding communities and San Antonio. The Geneva School is a private school that follows the Classical Christian model and is a member of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools, a nationwide organization. The educational program offered at Geneva School of Boerne is founded on the principles and values set forth in scripture. A classical and Christian school offers a unique and rigorous educational option for the families. The classical learning models follow a philosophy developed by the ancient Greeks which eventually influenced the Christian Church in the Middle Ages. Classical Model teaching is meant to train the mind. Of the seven arts enumerated in the Classical model the foundational three or tribium are

taught at Geneva. Grammar is the focus of elementary school, logic in middle school and rhetoric in high school. The curriculum also dictates that parents take a proactive and involved position in their children's education. Geneva offers AP classes and next year is adding dual credit collegelevel English courses to its curriculum in conjunction with University of Texas at San Antonio. It also offers in house required coursework for the PSAT and SAT. The Geneva School employs a full time college counselor and administer testing such as a Myers-Briggs personality test to match interests with abilities in determining which college and line of study is best suited for the student. Geneva’s curriculum culminates in a Senior thesis project in which students must present their project and then defend it in front of a panel of faculty members. The Geneva School has a very active arts and athletic program with a wide variety of developing arts programs, full athletic offerings and competes in the TAPPS league --the private and parochial school league equivalent to UIL. Geneva offers a strings program that will develop into orchestra, a band, drama program, guitar classes for both middle and high school, an expanding choir and visual fine arts classes including sculpture, drawing and painting. The Geneva School started a Capital Campaign in the fall of 2008 with the goal of raising $5 million. Even amidst the economic turmoil that campaign has been sucessful. The campaign, titled «Not for the Sake of Stone . . .But for the Hearts & Minds,» is being held to raise funds to provide (in order of priority): an academic village for our upper level students, a competition gym, a teacher endowment, and a student center we are calling the Lyceum. The three-year campaign has brought in over $5 million in gifts and pledges with over $3 million collected so far. The village consists of 13 buildings totaling 28,000 sq feet. The village

includes 24 classrooms, two science labs, a computer lab, three arts rooms, two locker rooms, and an adminstration building. The School has been able to build a 20,000 square foot competition gym which will be finished in August of this year in time for volleyball season to kick off. The Geneva School is set to graduate their first group of seniors in May of 2011. James Baker, the former secretary of state under President George H.W. Bush is slated to deliver the commencement address. Future growth for the school looks bright-admission is currently growing at a rate of 15% per year. For more information please visit www.genevaschooltx.org/ or for campus tours or more information about admissions please contact Gay Young at 830-755-6101.

Boerne Independent School District Boerne ISD is the largest public school system in the area that the children of Cordillera Ranch attend. The number of students the Boerne Independent School District (BISD) has 6,421 students as of February 2010. A major benefit of the large school system is the many opportunities for diverse class choices including numerous AP classes, Dual Credit courses, community service organizations and many sports programs. Of the eight campuses in Boerne ISD, five are rated Exemplary by the state of Texas and the remaining three are rated Recognized by the Texas Education Agency in 2009. The district was first Recognized in 1999 and has been in 10 of the 11 years since then. In 2008/09 the district TAKS test scores were superior in every area and for every subpopulation of students as compared to state averages. In the tested grades 3-11, 98% of the students passed reading, 95% passed math, 96% passed writing, 95% passed science, and 99% passed social studies. (Also: The new TPM measure pushed those initial scores to 99%, 98%, 99%, 97% CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 19

education and 100% respectively.) The district has expanded fine arts programs including the establishment of a BISD Orchestra Program (grades 5-12), annual visual arts fair, explosive growth in the high school band program, expansion during the past several years includes invitation for the Middle School Choir to sing at the White House and visits to/from a sister school in China. The Band Program students are perennial Sweepstakes winners and every year a large number of students named to state band and choir. In 2007, the band qualified for state. A unique relationship with the University of Texas at San Antonio allows Boerne High School students to attend college classes on that campus during the school day. In addition, the high school's Tech Prep program has higher education agreements for college credit in four main vocational career areas. The Alamo Community College District is now offering dual credit courses inside the high schools (2009/10) and an emerging relationship with Texas Tech will offer College Freshman Engineering in 2010. BISD has won seven state championships in the past six years. The Athletic program was crowned best in the San Antonio area (Dan Cook Award) in 2005 and each year since, and finished in the top 10 among all 4A districts in Texas (Governor's Cup Standings) for the past 4 years. State championships in team sports include soccer, softball, boys cross country, girls cross country, baseball, and tennis doubles. Also, there have been individual champions and state finalists in swimming, track and tennis. In 2009, the swimming team relay set a new 4A state record and the Champion Boys Cross Country Team became national champions. Within the past decade, Boerne ISD has more than doubled the square footage of its facilities, which was possible by a bond that voters approved in 2004, allowing over $99m worth of construction and improvements to take place. 20 | MArch | April 2010

The district opened beautiful BoerneSamuel V. Champion High School in fall 2008 and has now re-opened beautiful Boerne High School in August 2009. Champion High School has won a state award for design/ construction excellence and was given the Governor's Award in May 2009 for its innovative rainwater catchment system. The school also received the prestigious Caudill Award at the 2009 TASB Convention. The recently completed Boerne Middle School North renovation also received a state award for its design/construction. For more information please visit boerne-isd.net

Vanguard Christian Institute Vanguard Institute is an elementary and secondary Christian school founded in 1985 by the congregation of Christian Character Ministries, Inc. The vision for this education ministry was to design and provide a unique schooling environment for their

children. The first graduating class in 1991 had ten students. Some of Vanguard’s graduates to date include: teachers, firefighters, office and business managers, civil engineers, anthropologists, military personal, home schooling mothers, medical students, ministers, film industry technicians, and other professionals. Vanguard students have frequently chosen service related occupations. Over 95% of Vanguard's graduating students attend college.Vanguard strives to prepare young people academically and spiritually to be successful, Godly citizens, capable of positive contribution to our society. Vanguard has been a directing force in the lives of many students. Emphasis on Christian values and character combined with a strong, traditional academic curriculum prepares students for challenges after high school.Vanguard stresses character with every aspect of it's curriculum and handle kids in school like a parent would. The schools founders

found that children today lack real workd skills so the curriculum stresses life situations and consequences throughout the school day. Vanguard has small class sizes between 7 and 15 students. College prep curriculum includes dual cre dit cources through the Alamo Community College system where they earn college credits. SAT prep is done on an individual basis furthering the theme of individual responsibility. Vanguard offers twists on old classics for elective classes. An extensive auto shop class is conducted with past projects including the construction of a Cobra kit car and projects vary from semester to semester. Vanguard also has an extensive woodworking class, cooking class and a kiln set up for this semester's pottery course. It's easy to see that Vangaurd stresses hands on education. Even with Vangaurd's small class size they compete in a number of sports including six-man football, volleyball and track. Vanguard currently uses the A

BEKA curriculum stressing phonics, math, history and geography. Because of the small class size every one has a place; children tend to blossom and gain self-confidence and esteem. At Vangaurd Christian Institute, the admissions process is less formal than at other instititions. The admissions process is conducted via an interview to determine if a potential student has the right attitude and a willingness to learn. For more information about Vanguard Christian Institute please call (830) 537-5244 or email office@ vanguardchristianinstitute.com.

Douglas MacArthur was a member of its first class of students and, a few years later earned distinction as its first valedictorian. In 1926, the school was renamed Texas Military Institute. The school opened its doors to female students in 1972 and the military program became optional in 1974. Today the school is known as TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas. Hill Country Christian Homeschoolers If you have determined that homeschooling is a good fit for your values or you have started the process of homeschooling your children, Hill Country Christian Homeschoolers (HCCH) may suit your needs. The HCCH provides many valuable resources for parents who wish to have greater control over their children’s curriculum and school environment. The organization was founded in 1999 with a small number of families saw the need for a local homeschooling group. After gaining enough support the Hill Country Christian Homeschoolers was founded and in 2003 the HCCH was incorporated as a State of Texas Non-Profit Corporation. The HCCH says that it is a Christian support group founded on the principles found in God's Word, the Bible. But they are an inclusive group open to all home educators regardless of religious faith or background. While the board members are required to sign a statement of Faith, the general membership is not.

The HCCH has had a clear purpose and vision since its initial founding. They strive to support homeschooling families by giving them the opportunity to keep their high school students at home, help families and students make a successful transition from homeschooling to college or work, and to provide opportunities for students to grow and mature in the qualities needed to be independent learners and selfmotivated students. HCCH provides all of these benefits partially through a unique program they offer called SAC Day or Secondary Academic Class Day. This program is unlike any other class day or co-op in the San Antonio area. The SAC Day is meant to be a supplement to other lessons at home providing classes that most families find difficult to teach at home on the high school level, like math, foreign language and science. To join HCCH potential members must fill out two forms listed on their website. Simply follow the instructions on both forms and mail the forms with payment to the address on the registration form.

Within two weeks of HCCH receiving your registration, you will receive a welcome email from our registrar containing log on instructions for the Member’s Area of our website, where you will find the details for upcoming events as well as a printable membership packet. To participate in the SAC Day students must schedule an interview with the SAC Day Board New students of current families should schedule an interview with the SAC Day Board on either April 5th or April 12th (so they can register during early registration). For more information, please visit the HCCH website at www.hcchnet.com.

Hill Country Montessori

Hill Country Montessori School, Inc. (HCMS) began its journey as a parent initiative to provide early childhood education to the Boerne Community. It is the successor organization to St. Helena’s Montessori School, which was founded in 1981. Their current campus facilities were constructed in 2009 and opened with the 2009-2010 Academic Year. Hill Country Montessori School is nestled on 10 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and serves children 18 months through 12 years. As a school community committed to providing children of the Texas Hill

Country with an excellent Montessori education, HCMS puts great emphasis on ensuring they remain true to the Montessori philosophy and to their mission. Their vision involves helping children develop a love of learning that results in high academic achievement, self-discipline, self-motivation and respect for themselves, others and their environment. Weekly resource programs are provided in Art, Music, Movement, Physical Education, Spanish and Reading Development. Teachers who specialize in each discipline conduct these classes within the classroom environment. Each class is designed to be age-appropriate and meet the needs of the particular program level. Each program level has its own outdoor environment that is equipped with age-appropriate equipment. Gardens and small animal areas are available as part of the outdoor classroom. All of these resources are included in the tuition. The 2009-2010 activities include music, dance, karate, choir, piano, and strings (violin, viola and cello). Hill Country Montessori School has received accreditations from the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and hold memberships with the American Montessori Society (AMS), the

National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Independent Schools Association of San Antonio (ISA). They are currently the only AMS accredited Montessori school in the San Antonio metropolitan area and one of only eight accredited schools in the state of Texas. They are also licensed through the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, which set forth regulations concerning childcare and health policies. HCMS has also been declared a non-profit, tax-exempt educational corporation since April 26, 1990. For more information please visit www.hcmontessori.org.

our body is one of your most important possessions, so why not treat it as such? As health and wellness continue to move into the forefront of the health industry, society is beginning to shift the mindset of trying to fix what has been “broken” after years of wear and tear to preventative maintenance. We now know the importance of our health to a long, fulfilling life and are developing an attitude of responsibility for our physical and mental wellness. There are many things that can be done in creating a healthy lifestyle and one thing alone will not derive the results that are often desired. Diet, exercise, breathing, hydration, relaxation, and a number of other factors influence our overall health and how we feel day in and day out. While some of these actions are done internally, The Clubs hosts amenities and services which can promote a healthier lifestyle. Exercising in the Fitness Center for example, can increase cardiovascular and muscular strength, while receiving a massage

can promote the body to restore, repair and regenerate. A facial assists the circulatory system and stimulates our body’s largest organ, the skin, while regular manicures and pedicures not only improve your skin and nail condition, it also acts as a stress reducer and a way to pamper yourself. All of these actions, which can help you create a healthier life; can be found at The Clubs. In an effort to improve or sustain our physical wellness, the Fitness Center is great place to start. We have many different types of cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, recumbent bikes, a Stepmill and a new Precor piece called an AMT (Adaptive Motion Trainer). The AMT may seem a little intimidating but is a great piece to add variety and customize your workout because it allows you to run, jog and climb. An important component of exercise that can easily be over looked or intimidating is weight training. Lifting weights can not only

make you stronger and more capable in our everyday lives from climbing stairs to carrying groceries or children it also boosts metabolism, increases muscle definition, improves joint stability and increases bone density. The Fitness Center hosts an array of weight training equipment from a Smith Machine where exercises like bench and incline press, squats and dead lifts can be performed to the Precor Multi-Station where exercises such as bicep curls, triceps extension and pectoral flies are just a sample of the training exercises available. Group Exercise is one of the latest booms within fitness spectrum and is a great way to incorporate support, friendship and structure into your fitness routine. Classes available at Cordillera include, Yoga, Bootcamp Cordillera: Strait Up Strength (a group weight lifting class), Pilates, Step Aerobics and Basic Step. We are now featuring two types of step classes, Basic Step, a class designed for beginners or individuals interested in less impact and simpler choreography

while Step Aerobics is more intense in regards to cardio and choreography. Come try out a class, options to increase or decrease workout while enjoying a fun, social atmosphere. Certainly we all want to be at our best and working out in the Fitness Center helps maintain our health. Yet maintaining our health goes beyond just the physical work out. It also involves taking care of our skin and nails and getting regular massages. All of these things can help create balance in our body and ensure that we are healthy. By simply taking the time to make an appointment with our massage therapist, esthetician or nail technician, you will be on your way to a healthy happy life. Massage therapy is very helpful in keeping the body, mind and spirit in balance, as it promotes relaxation of body, clarity of mind and peace and calm in spirit. When your body is in pain it causes low spirits, depression and diminished mental performance. If you are worried and stressed out it causes tightness in muscles and scows the process of the body’s normal functions. Massage can treat chronic diseases, enhance immunity, lessen depression and anxiety, relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles as well as release endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers. Karen Walton, RMT, has been practicing massage since 1975 and has many modalities in her repertoire from basics such as Swedish and Therapeutic to Hot Stone, Reflexology, and Myofascial Massage. By regularly engaging in massage you will become healthier and feel more and more youthful with each passing year. Facials are another important factor when discussing overall health. We nourish our bodies in what we eat. We nourish our skin in what we feed it, as well. That’s why it’s important to take care of our skin and give it the best possible ‘diet’ and ‘exercise’ through a good home care regimen and getting regular facials. Facials not only make you feel better, they are wonderfully beneficial for the skin. Various skin conditions like acne, oily/ dry/combination skin, large pores, blemishes, rosacea, pigmentation, sun damage, fine lines and aging skin, can be addressed during a facial as well as appropriate products for home care. Amanda Myers-Stumpf, our onsite esthetician, custom tailors facials for both women and men, by choosing from an array of the very luscious fruit, vegetable and herbal skincare products handcrafted by Éminence Organic Skin Care of Hungary. These organic ingredients have an incredibly fresh aroma, with natural pure vitamin infusions and high bioflavonoid content. The Clubs signature facials offers a wide spectrum of cleansers, toniques, exfoliants, masques, serums, eye creams and moisturizers that are selected to give you a fabulous facial targeting your own special needs and concerns leaving your skin soft and radiant. While massages and facials are a commonly known practice to improve health and wellbeing, manicures and pedicures also play an important role. Our nails shield and sustain the tissue in our fingers and toes and

the condition of one’s nails can relay messages in regards to health conditions such as liver and kidney disease, anemia, diabetes, lung disease and even heart disease, just by viewing the nails. Manicures can improve the look of the fingernails and hands and assist in the prevention of hang nails, nail damage and healing broken skin around the fingernails. In addition, massages are included in manicures and help improve the skin’s health by enhancing blood circulation, consequently discouraging wrinkles on the hands. With this use of reflexology, hands and feet will experience balance by releasing the flow of energy and allow you to feel increased relaxation and circulation. Tammy Stone can provide professional attention to your nails in a relaxing atmosphere which can help your physical and mental well being. Tammy’s services will exfoliate the skin to promote cell renewal and remove dry skin while an oil hydrating massage and a paraffin treatment provide moisture to the skin and reduce signs of aging. If desired, polish is then applied to protect further by keeping moisture in the nails and defend from detrimental conditions caused by the environment. If becoming healthy and treating yourself in a way that puts your health and wellbeing first, the Clubs Fitness Center and Spa Services are a great place to start. Not only will you begin to feel better mentally and physically you will also begin to see outward signs of a healthy lifestyle. So start today, your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it! A Foundation to Build On

mong oaks and cedars at 123 Riverwood, three young ladies with big, open smiles bounce up and down on a giant trampoline that is nestled into a magnificent backyard wonderland. Mark and Gina Anderson, along with their daughters Morgan, Maddie, and McKenna, live in a home truly fit for their active lifestyles, and have Patrick McGrath and a team of truly talented architectural artists by their sides. “We originally purchased a lot by the River Crossing area that was about 3.3 acres,” Mark said. “We had found a builder and put our plans together and were getting ready to build, but felt like we would have been one of the first families back there. Since I travel often, I wasn’t quite sure about leaving everyone else at home.”

30 | MArch | April 2010

“We started thinking about looking at a more developed area of Cordillera,” he continued. “I was driving through the neighborhood one day when I saw this house. It was in the middle of construction; I called the builder, Patrick [McGrath], and we talked. The thing that I liked about this area is that it had more of a neighborhood feel.” So, the Andersons began their move into the Riverwood neighborhood. “When we purchased this house, they were just about done with the framing and insulation,” Mark said. It was then up to the Andersons to begin the interior design process. “We picked out the whole interior, and all of the colors,” Gina added. Mixing deep, warm browns with a crisp, farm-house cream finish, the home features a combination of interior

home tour and exterior paints and textures. “We wanted the Hill Country look,” Mark said. “We wanted a metal roof, and we liked a lot of the rock and stone both inside and outside.” The kitchen boasts a rock wall created to look like a farmhouse addition. “It might not be a ‘Wow’ house in the sense of big entryways or grand hallways, but we weren’t really looking for that. We wanted something more functional, something that would work with our family.” “And that’s Patrick McGrath,” Gina smiled. “He likes to build a nice, functional home—a warm home— that’s still beautiful at the same time, starting with the rustic feeling.” The Andersons found the expert guidance of Debbie Stolle, interior designer for Debbie Stolle Interiors. “Debbie and I had picked out the colors together, even though they already had a lot of the interiors planned. It was actually a huge relief, and took out a lot of the stress of choosing our interiors, because I really liked the colors and the textures that they’d had in mind,” Gina said. “Javier Guerra with JMG Interiors did a great job fauxing and handtroweling our walls in the kitchen and upstairs,” Mark added. “He fauxed all of the walls and ceilings, and we had Javier come back and do some trim and other painting work whenever we need him.” “And, from a practicality standpoint,” Mark continued, “the house is very energy efficient. It has a lot of insulation and the HVAC systems are very good. We even have our own A/C system for just the master suite. There are so many things about the energy function of the house that Patrick had planned for in advance.” However, the interior wasn’t the only thing on the Anderson’s minds: they had a whole different plan for what was outside. “When we bought the house, it was still about 90 days from completion,” Mark said. “At that point, I met with Charles Wilkes, Patrick’s architect, and over two breakfasts we designed the casita-

cabana.” The casita-cabana, with an outdoor theater and lounge area and an indoor apartment, compliments the farmhouse look with exposed timbers, textured stone, and a genuine Hill Country charm. Equipped with a bathroom, a small kitchen, and a serene open-air living area, the cabana is the perfect outdoor escape… only a few short steps from the back door. Nestled between the cabana and the casa, a beautiful blue pool, sport court, and elegant natural landscaping make the Anderson’s backyard close to paradise. “It was excellent to work with Keith Zars [from Keith Zars Pools]. We wanted a pool that was functional for the kids. We wanted to keep it close to the house, and it had to coordinate with the casita-cabana area, so we situated the elements together.” Behind the pool lies a fun-filled sport court, a Snap Court built by Backyard Recreation. Complimenting all of the

outdoor amenities, natural stone, rock, and landscaping elements add to the paradisiacal feel. “Steve Jones [with Outdoor Creations] created the hardscaping, and he was able to tie all of the rocks and boulders in with the house,” Gina said. “And our friend, Chema Gomez with Exterior Design Concepts, did the irrigation and organic landscaping.” Mark added, “Plus, Thomas Northington with Ranchers Tree Service cleared our lot and canopied our oaks. It was great to work with him!” And, both inside and out, the Andersons enjoy the elements of music and media. “Ultimate Home Theater equipped our media room upstairs and the family room with surround sound, as well as the casita. Everything in our house is high definition, and they did a great job of running all the cables throughout the house and into the casita.” All in all, the Andersons have a home that truly speaks to the warmth of their family and their active,

outdoor lifestyle, and Cordillera Ranch has proven to be the perfect community for them. “My dad takes the dogs down to the park every day, and we like to go fishing and on picnics,” Morgan said, happily. McKenna added, “I had my birthday party here, and it was really fun because I got to ride the horses at the equestrian center. And the twisty slide at the pool is so much fun!” “We really do have the perfect place for gettogethers,” Mark said. “We’ve had the whole acro [acrobatic gymnastics] team here for parties before, and we’ve hosted the Men’s Group. The house and the club are great focal points for entertaining, both with our backyard and outdoor space and with the club’s facilities.” And when the quiet settles back in after the gatherings, the family enjoys, well, just living here. “I really like living here because of the views. We have all this land, and we’re not squished together between a whole bunch of houses,” Maddie said. “You feel like you reach a tranquil point the minute you get back into the gate at Cordillera; it’s like a different world,” Mark added. “It’s a very comforting feeling, and the fact that we have so many amenities in this environment makes it a real neighborhood.” The Andersons and their loving home have certainly become an integral part of the Riverwood neighborhood, from the beauty of the home’s construction to the wonderland in the backyard. But beneath the floor lies something incredibly special—a hidden gem that only the Andersons have seen. Stained onto the concrete in black magic marker are Bible verses chosen by the family. “We wrote on our foundation a reminder of our one foundation as a family,” Gina said. “Though the tile covers them up, we know they’re there—those words are the foundation on which our family stands.”

JIMMY WALKER-

Never Looking Back By Ben Schooley

T

his past November, Jimmy Walker stared down a 5 foot putt that was probably one of the most difficult putts of his life. Playing in the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, Walker was on the 18th green. The last tournament of the 2009 season, the entire season culminated with this last putt. While Walker collected himself, his wife turned off the TV. She couldn’t watch. Walker’s father got in the car and drove to the coast and back. Anything to keep themselves away from the TV. His mother sat at her computer “growing an ulcer” as Walker put it. Bouncing back and forth from the Nationwide Tour to the PGA Tour, this last putt was one that he simply had to make. If he sinks it, he earns the 125th spot on the PGA Tour Money List, securing a fully exempt season for the entire PGA Tour in 2010. If he misses, he’s back to the Nationwide Tour. With everything on the line, Walker cooled his nerves and sank the putt. After triple-checking the numbers to ensure that his final round 69 secured the 125th spot, Walker and his wife, Erin, immediately embarked on a holiday vacation in Mexico to celebrate. It was a well deserved

break from what has been a grueling schedule for the Walkers, and one that hopefully will be coming to an end. It was also the culmination of a long journey that began in Oklahoma City, where Walker spent his earliest years. “My dad was my coach. He was self-taught. When he was playing at his best, he was one of the best players around town. I watched him shoot a 60 one day. He was a great mentor.” While Walker had an interest in golf early on, like most kids, he was into a lot of sports. “I was big into baseball, and played a bunch of sports. However, when I was 11, we moved to San Antonio, dad bought a golf cart, and from there, I was hooked. Dad played every day with me, and I learned so much from him.” As Walker excelled in the junior amateur tournaments, major colleges began to take notice. Eventually, Walker settled on a full scholarship to Baylor. “I majored in business management. I had a golf coach at Baylor, but I didn’t really listen to him. I didn’t feel like I needed to start changing things with my game. A lot of the guys that came in had their own coaches, and I didn’t have one yet, so I just listened to my dad.” As Walker continued to hone his game,

he began to set his sights on the PGA Tour. “During my junior year, Bryan Gathright became my coach and he’s still my coach. I knew I wanted to get more serious about turning pro. I got that full ride to Baylor, and my intention was always to learn everything I could and then go pro. I went to school for 4 years, left school, and never finished. I was far more motivated to get after it.” And Walker didn’t waste much time. I immediately qualified for the US Open in 2001. I had to go through two qualifiers to get there, and that was the moment I knew I was ready to go pro. I won the local qualifying, and then there are 80 guys fighting for 3 spots at the next event. I got the 3rd spot.” Walker was then poised to fully realize his dream of playing professionally. “When you register for the Open, there’s a checkbox for whether you are pro or amateur. I shrugged my shoulders, selected PRO, and have never looked back.” At a 2005 Nationwide tour event in Salt Lake, Walker was introduced to Erin. “I was in Salt Lake City when I met her. She was a volunteer for the tournament. The company she was working for was the title sponsor of the event. A caddy introduced us.

At Cordillera Ranch, we have friends. We’ve been members of the Club now for 3 years, and we’re treated like neighbors.

The guy was going to caddy for me in a couple of weeks, and he invited her out to watch me play. So we met, I asked her out, and we went out Sunday night after the tourney. Her parents thought it was cool that she was hanging out with a pro golfer. So she came out for the next 3 tournaments. We talked a lot on the phone and then she started coming out to see me. She was then accepted to law school, and it was in Australia. I went up to visit her and figured that if I liked her family I probably better marry her. So 5 months after meeting her, we were engaged.” After getting married, Walker returned his focus to the course. “I had always wanted to get my PGA tour card right after college. But I didn’t get all the way through Q School, so I went to the Canadian tour, and 40 | MArch | April 2010

won a tourney there. I started doing Monday qualifiers for the Nationwide tour. I got into a few of them, and then received conditional status with the Nationwide tour. I played half a year in 2003 on the Nationwide tour, and I started getting to play in more and more tourneys. I earned full status for the next season, but I missed my card in Q School by two shots. I had some success and won Player of the Year on the Nationwide tour in 2005. That enabled me to make my PGA tour debut in 2005, but I hurt my neck the first tourney of the year so I played in only nine tournaments. Then in 2006 I played on the tour and just played awful, and had to go back to the Nationwide in 2007. I played one good tourney, got my card back and in 2008 just had a terrible year. So back to Q school, and then got my card back. Last year I started

feature guys. The tour has an amazing daycare that travels with them every week, and it’s great. The staff travels with the tour, and the perks are wonderful; it’s such a close knit group. But no matter how close it is, you really only have acquaintances. At Cordillera Ranch, we have friends. We’ve been members of the Club now for 3 years, and we’re treated like neighbors. Maybe if Jimmy wins the Masters, it will change things and we’ll be treated differently, but we hope not.” Jimmy adds, “We could see the vision of what was going to happen here at Cordillera Ranch, and it’s so beautiful. Erin would love to move the horses home. We both obviously love golf, and we hope to teach the kids. The entire lifestyle of it just can’t be beat. We’ve been to the most premier golf courses in the country, and we just marvel at what an amazing facility that Cordillera is. There’s nothing like it in the country. You have members that have done amazing things and it’s just not pretentious here. No matter where we travel, we are so excited to get back home!”

Enjoying the prospect of a successful 2010, Walker understands that while life on the Tour is a dream come true, it can still sometimes become “a job”. He explains, “I have to keep reminding myself how amazing it is to do what I do. Sometimes it can become monotonous. I have to tell myself ‘Man, I am so lucky. This is an amazing opportunity. This is so much fun. You’re playing golf on the Tour. Do you know how many people would kill to be able to do this?’ I have lost sight of that before, and so I’ve been focusing on cherishing it. You forget about how far you’ve come, and you can lose focus of where you are trying to go.” As for where he’s trying to go, Walker has some simple and yet profound goals. “My goal is to win. Hit more fairways, make more putts. Go win, have a baby, and just keep living.”

to play really well about halfway through the year. That’s where I was able to make the shot that earned me fully exempt status for the 2010 season. Oh, and we had just learned that Erin was pregnant!” To say it’s been wild ride to finally secure a fully exempt season would be quite the understatement. So as the Walkers enter the 2010 season, they are finally able to enjoy a set schedule and focus on the Tour as well as growing their family. Erin says, “Once you start having families, it becomes harder to travel with the CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 41

When beginning a design concept for a custom client, Damon Christofilis of Burdick and Christofilis, considers thorough analysis of the property essential. The marriage of the home to the land, the terrain, orientation, trees, future neighbors are all important factors to influence the design. Site design and landscape architecture can be as important as the architecture of the home itself.

113 Arroyo – The newton residence The most desirous home site on the property here, situated at the end of a cul-de-sac, was at the rear of the lot where two seasonal creeks converged. The opportunity to capture the amazing view of the Hill Country vistas and the bluffs around the creeks warranted the pools construction before the house. The architect, Boyce Tucker did an amazing job of creating an overall site plan which we used to create this masterpiece.

200 riverwood – the verses residence This home started as a spec home with the stated intention of doing something “different.” This property, across from the Guadalupe, is one that rises from front to back and has challenging topography and geology. There are amazing views which we captured off the front and side of the house, although a little unorthodox, with the creation of porches and balconies on these areas. The use of 30 and 60 degree angles in mainstructures, again a little unusual, is critical to achieving the exact sightlines that resulted in the amazing views off the front of the home on the rear of the house. We had to engineer the pool and landscaping to handle the site drainage of several other lots on the back of the house

325 park ridge This home is the third model home we have had in Cordillera Ranch over the last 10 years. Each new one we do we try to show off a different stylistic capability of our team. This showplace home has a Tuscan feel with an emphasis on one of our most requested spaces: large outdoor living areas.

147 augusta This home, located in the golf course village, is a great example of what possibilities exist on a one acre lot. Although many characteristics such as slope, trees, sun, privacy must be taken into consideration. However on this property the primary focus was to capture the coveted views of the Twin Sisters peaks as well as the golf course. Also, the presence of the golf course influenced the steps we took to provide maximum privacy, considering the course proximity and adjacent neighbors. In the end we are very proud of the finished project and the example it represents of well thoughtout design and construction on a golf course lot. You cannot afford to make design mistakes on any lot much less a premier property in the golf village.

It’s Almost Time! By Marc DeWall

As we move into the busy Spring golf season here in South Texas, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of all the services and programs we have to offer you in our golf operation at Cordillera Ranch. We continue to strive to be the source for all of your golfing needs. Your golf experience here starts with a fantastic golf course that is in terrific shape. Jack Nicklaus designed a golf course that is absolutely stunning, challenging and has been ranked as one of the top golf courses in the state. KD and the entire golf course maintenance team continue to produce outstanding playing conditions for all of our members and their guests. The golf professional and operations staff work hard to provide you with a memorable golf experience each and every time you play. We have some special events once again scheduled on the golf calendar as well as a few new events planned. Members of Cordillera Ranch will be able to participate in the newly formed “Texas Town Matches” which will take place in late May and early November. These matches are an Inter-Club competition amongst five of the top private clubs in Texas and include Escondido, Boot Ranch, Carlton Woods, Miramont and Cordillera Ranch. We also have a separate Inter-Club match scheduled with Spanish Oaks in March. Also new for this year will be a Men’s One-Day Pro Member-Guest in June. The newly formed Men’s Golf Association will also bring three new events to the tournament schedule throughout the year as well as a Rules/Etiquette night. A Night Putting Tournament is scheduled for early November and finally, look for a change in formats for the Sticks and Stones MemberMember and C-Star Member-Guest. For a complete listing of tournaments on the Golf Calendar, please go

to the Club’s website at www.clubsofcordilleraranch.com. I hope you have the chance to participate in our events this year as we have something planned for all types of players. The golf professional staff has a great deal of teaching experience and offers lessons to golfers of all ages and abilities. We have had great success with group clinics and private instruction while utilizing an outstanding video teaching system. Lesson packages are available from the Head Golf Professional and Assistant Golf Professionals. Custom fitting has become a big part of the process in buying golf equipment and we can help. We can also take care of all of your club repair needs. We do re-grip work on site and can turn around other club repair needs on a timely basis. Now is the time to consider investing in improving your golf game and there is no better way to get started than instruction from our staff of PGA professionals. The Cordillera Ranch Golf and Trading Shop offers a variety of merchandise that is more than just the standard golf merchandise. In addition to top of the line golf clubs, balls, gloves, shoes and bags we carry great men’s, women’s and junior apparel. Casual wear and great gift items are also available and you can place special orders for items not in stock. Remember, members receive a 20% discount on all hard goods.

If you are traveling and would like to play golf somewhere give us a call and we will do our best to help you if it is another private facility. We can often help by making a call to another PGA Professional. I hope we have an opportunity to join you on the course soon. Please call me or one of the assistants as we would love to play a round with you or your group. This is a great way to get to know and serve you better. See you on the course! We’re changing the way the world looks at South Texas real estate.

And setting new standards of excellence along the way. Not so long ago, if you wanted to look around for a new home, you either waited for Sunday’s newspaper and trolled the classifieds, or drove around neighborhoods in the hope of finding a “For Sale” sign. Today, the world wide web has changed all that. 90% of all property sales begin on the internet. In real estate, as in every other walk of life, there are those who embrace technology and pioneer new ideas, and those who are dragged, kicking and screaming, into each new decade. As an industry leader, we offer a concept which combines the very best of all worlds: cutting edge marketing technology coupled with traditional quality service. So whether you Google, Facebook, YouTube or Tweet us – or prefer to talk to one of our real estate professionals by telephone or in person, our goal will always be the same: to provide exceptional service that exceeds your expectations. Whatever your real estate needs, contact us first and discover why we have been San Antonio’s preferred real estate company for more than 20 years.

We’re reinventing excellence. www.phyllisbrowning.com www.facebook.com/phyllisbrowning www.youtube.com/phyllisbrowning 210-824-7878 Alamo Heights

bryan overdyke Hometown: Shreveport, La Family: Wife and pug Education: University of Mississippi, Texas Culinary Academy How did you get into your field? My professional career began while attending college in Mississippi. In the midst of deciding whether or not to attend a football game, an unheard of sin in the SEC, I received a phone call from my best friend. His uncle had recently opened a local color steak and fish establishment, Taylor Grocery and Restaurant, located a little outside of the “Cultural Mecca of the South.” It was their second night of business and they needed help. That afternoon I clocked in for my first 13 hour shift of many in the food service industry and never looked back.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your business? Every time a dining experience is created for friends and family Favorite aspect or feature at Cordillera Ranch? The overall aesthetics of the land; the aerial photos make the place appear as an oasis in the desert.

Tennis

at Cordillera Ranch

by Glenn Barton

Cordillera Ranch tennis may be the new kid on the block, but many of the attributes needed for a great club and program are already in place here at the Ranch. This spring Cordillera will have two ladies teams competing in the city wide tennis leagues that lead to the state, and then national championships. A third team is already forming for the fall season and will also be competing for city honors. Junior classes are on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday’s with two pro’s working hard to stay up with the demands of the growing interest and numbers. Seven kids are playing high school tennis with 12 to 15 looking to make 66 | MArch | April 2010

their middle school teams during spring try outs. Social events are always a source of fun activity. In early spring we will be starting up the “Mixed up Doubles Nights” which is an evening of social, sometimes competitive, doubles using a partner rotation system. Similar events are scheduled through out the year mostly during national holidays like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. For those that want to test themselves we have the competitive events as well. Like our in house “Sneakers and Cleats” competition, a Pro-am style “Extravaganza” event, a “Ladies Member Guest”, and the always competitive men’s and ladies club singles, doubles, and mixed doubles championships. “Cardio” tennis has become a weekly staple for many. This non stop approach to tennis is a fabulous way to burn calories, increase cardio health, firm and tone muscles, and have a genuinely good time. A class on Saturday morning and a class Wednesday evenings provide an opportunity to schedule a consistent workout regimen. Summer time is big here at Cordillera with different opportunities available especially for kids. Our “Tennis, Sports, Adventure Camp”, is designed for those that love the great outdoors, “Tennis, Dance, and Swim Camp” is huge with the young ladies, “Baseball/Tennis Camp” explores the similarities of the two sports. And of course summer wouldn’t be summer without “Tennis Camp” where the kids look to improve their skills for the fall competitions, learn to be successful in a competitive environment, and have fun in the sun. The Fall brings around even more opportunities for fun with the always popular events like the “Men’s, Ladies, and Kids Mixer”, “Parent Child Fun Days”, and the Christmas holiday favorite “Christmas Extravaganza and Ornament Exchange”. The tennis center sits on the side of a gently rolling hill providing a hill country view second to none. The shop is stocked with the latest in tennis fashions, accessories, racquets, and boasts a large comfortable locker facility. Tennis at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch is new, exciting, and growing with every activity and event. Cordillera tennis is on the move while getting great reviews and respect from local players.
