welcome

With spring in full bloom and summer quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy what this beautiful community has to offer. In this issue we feature an array of outdoor activities both inside and outside the gates of Cordillera Ranch. Golf, tennis, kayaking, fishing, trail rides, music festivals, wine tours, boat races and so much more, it is definitely going to be an exciting and adventurous start to summer. Another big draw of summer is that it’s a great time to start building your new home, or adding a pool and gorgeous landscaping to your existing home. We will be hosting our 3rd Annual Preferred Builder’s Fair May 22nd and 23rd at the Clubhouse. All of our outstanding preferred builders, along with pool contractors, mortgage companies and landscape companies, will be available for you to meet with and begin or enhance your dream home. If any of you are sports fans, especially basketball, you will love our feature story. In Spurs country it doesn’t get any better than having a former Spurs coach as your neighbor. Coach Bob Hill and his wife Pam now call Cordillera Ranch their home after traveling and coaching all over the world. His passion and love for the game allow you to see what makes a successful coach and person. Many of you have given us positive feedback on how much you enjoy the Cordillera Ranch Living magazine. It is our mission to bring new ideas to each issue so that it always gives you something new that you are interested in hearing about. The best ideas for future issues will come from those of you who live and socialize in Cordillera Ranch. I encourage you to call or email me with any ideas you think will interest you and your fellow residents, members and property owners. Please don’t hesitate to send your feedback and ideas.

STAFF PROFILE

MONTY BECTON CLUBS OF CORDILLERA RANCH GENERAL MANAGER

14 | MAY | JUNE 2010

NAME: Monty Becton HOMETOWN: I was born in Ottumwa, Iowa but growing up we also lived in Arizona, Kansas, and Arkansas. Both of my parents were born and raised in west Texas and Patti and I have lived in Lubbock, Perryton, San Angelo, Houston and the DFW area for the last 20 years so we call Texas home! EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science in Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management from Texas Tech University in 1987. FAMILY: My wife Patti, who is a graduate of Iowa State University and works for Accenture as the Marketing and Communications manager for the state of Texas, along with two pups an English bulldog named Lucy Lou and an adopted mix-breed named Doby HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE COUNTRY CLUB INDUSTRY? Originally I was focused on pursuing a career in the hotel business but when I graduated in 1987 that industry was in a slump. Although I interviewed with both Hyatt and Marriott and was fortunate to be offered both positions, the compensation and opportunity for advancement was less than desired. I happened to see a posting for a club manager position in Perryton, Texas so I applied for the position, interviewed with the board and started my career in the country club business. I fell in love with the culture of private clubs and the challenge of meeting and or exceeding Members expectations. I’ve never looked back. WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MENTOR? I can’t name just one; Personally, I would have to say that I had a good foundation thanks to my parents and family. My wife should also get a great deal of credit as a result of her support over the last 23 years. This industry can be very rewarding, but at the same time the time demands and hours are non-traditional and often excessive. Professionally, I would attribute my leadership skills and knowledge of the business to the numerous teams and individuals I’ve had the pleasure of working with over my 23 year career. I’ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to be exposed to some of the brightest and creative minds in the private club industry. As a result of the many clubs I’ve been associated with I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Arnold Palmer and Robert Dedman just to name a few. As impressive as that may sound, I believe I’ve actually learned the most by interacting with all of the employees I’ve been associated with during my career. In my opinion culture is the backbone of any great organization and when we create the right culture and empower our team to excel at what they do, it creates an environment that thrives on inspiration and motivation and produces a winning combination for all of the partners. I strive to live by the motto “Take your assignments seriously, but never yourself too seriously”.

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES? Patti and I enjoy traveling; we’ve had the pleasure of traveling both domestically and internationally and are always anticipating our next adventure. Other than that, good food, good wine or a cold beer, golf (for me), tennis (for her), time with friends and family and believe it or not, being around the club. MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? The people. I like it when we make someone’s day. I also like to see employees advance their careers, excel at what they love as well as meeting and or exceeding the members needs and expectations. You’ll hear me talk about balancing the needs of all three of our partners, the employee partners, member partners, and financial partners. All three partners have to win, if any one partner starts winning at the expense of the others, the environment and ultimately the club are in jeopardy. MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB? Balancing the needs of all three partners! WHAT’S ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? My family showed horses growing up; we were Members of the OKWPS (Oklahoma, Kansas, Welch Pony Society) and showed both western pleasure and hunter jumper. As I got older I advanced into showing other larger breed horses as well, but then came girls, sports, work, and the demands of high school, so I didn’t have the time necessary to continue with that hobby. I haven’t ridden in years, but I look forward to spending some time at the equestrian center and working with the team there. FAVORITE ASPECT OF CORDILLERA RANCH? The lifestyle, it’s no accident that Patti and I are here. Ted Keyser, the previous manager and I had worked together when I was with ClubCorp. I visited Ted during his tenure and when he called me to say he was leaving, I didn’t hesitate to ask him to pass my resume on to the Hill family. For the last 10 years I’ve been working in a regional VP capacity and spending most of my time traveling and working with clubs around the country. After overseeing and managing a large variety of clubs during my career, it was obvious that Cordillera Ranch was a special oneof-a-kind opportunity. When you combine the beauty of the community along with the lifestyle amenities and the good nature of the Residents and Members, this has the ingredients of one of the finest communities in the country. The Hill and Northington families are committed to the long term vision of the club and the community in general. Combine all that with the dedicated, hardworking employees that I met during the interview process and you have a winning combination! I will tell you from personal experience that this is a very special place with a bright future and is a place Patti and I will be proud to call home. As they say, “This is living, pure and simple”!

DINING

gazpacho By Chef Bryan Overdyke

Ingredients:

With summer right around the corner, the high temperatures will soon be here as well. An excellent way to combat the heat and use the produce from your garden is a classic Spanish style gazpacho. Although there are as many gazpacho recipes as we have members, here is a simple recipe I’m sure all will enjoy.

8-10 LARGE TOMATOES

Often, gazpachos are made with all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and the end result is a pinkish, chunky bloody Mary mix. The secret to a fine Spanish style gazpacho is to prepare all of the ingredients separately and leave the soup chunky. If you must use a food processor, process all of your vegetables individually and combine together at the end.

peeled, seeded and finely chopped.*

4-5 LARGE CLOVES OF GARLIC, crushed into a paste with the side of your knife

1 ENGLISH CUCUMBER, peeled, seeded, finely chopped

1 LARGE VIDALIA ONION (or other sweet onion) finely chopped

1 BELL PEPPER (color of your choice) seeded, and finely chopped

2 JALAPENOS (serranos if you desire more heat) seeded, and finely chopped

2 LIMES, juiced 1 LEMON, juiced KOSHER SALT, to taste FRESH CRACKED BLACK PEPPER, to taste SEASONED CROUTONS CRUSHED ICE, about a cup

Preparation: In a seasoned wooden salad bowl, or stainless mixing bowl, stir the crushed garlic into the tomato. Add the remaining cucumbers, bell pepper, and jalapenos individually by mixing them in and not crushing. Add the lime and lemon juice. Season according to taste. Toss the salad with the crushed ice, ladle into bowls and top with croutons. If you do not have crushed ice, simply place ice cubes in heavy freezer bag and crush with the back of a heavy spoon until all the large chunks are gone. I like to serve mine with some of the zest from the lime and a dash of Tabasco. For a more Mexican flair, add cilantro. *To remove the skin from the tomatoes, with a pairing knife, remove the stem attachment, and on the other end, make a small “X” just through the skin. Drop the tomatoes in boiling water for about 45 seconds and then plunge into ice water. The skin can then be easily peeled from the fruit. This recipe is best made a day ahead of time. Simply omit the crushed ice until ready to serve. Makes about 8 six ounce servings

golf GOLF news

GOLF EVENTS THE STICKS AND STONES MEMBER-MEMBER TOURNAMENT will take place May 1-2. We have a new format for the event this year that we hope you will enjoy. Day one will be a Combined Quota format and day two will be a Net BB Quota format. Highlighting the event once again will be the Saturday night party. I hope you will be able to participate in what will be a very special event. The golf course is in fantastic shape thanks to our Golf Course Superintendent Mark Semm and his entire crew. There is no better time to showcase the Club facilities and golf course than right now. Members have a unique opportunity to bring up to three guests on May 7th or May 8th during our SPECIAL GUEST DAYS. They are incredibly popular and we will have complimentary food/drink available on the golf course.

IN FULL SWING May and June represent two of the busiest golf months in South Texas. We have some great activities and events planned for you that we hope you will be able to take advantage of here at Cordillera Ranch.

THE 2010 MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP is scheduled for May 14-16. This tournament identifies the best players at the Club through 54 and 36 hole stroke-play competition. Players are flighted by handicap. This is a great opportunity to test your game in a competitive, fun environment. The CWGA Ladies will be hosting THE HILL COUNTRY INTERCLUB EVENT here at Cordillera Ranch on May 20. This event has 72 ladies participating from different clubs from all over San Antonio and the Hill Country. The MGA and CWGA are also working on a new event called THE COUPLES STAMPEDE which will take place on Saturday May 22. Also new for this year is the TEXAS TOWN MATCHES which is an Inter-Club match with some of the finest clubs in Texas. Participating facilities include Miramont, Carlton Woods, Boot Ranch, Escondido and Cordillera Ranch. The first matches will be in Houston and College Station on May 26-27. The newly formed MGA has some great things planned for June beginning with MEN’S NIGHT OUT events that will take place on June 3rd and 17th. Each event begins at 6:00pm and is only 9-holes. Members may bring one guest, form their own group or we can pair you. Stay and enjoy food and drink following play. The MGA will also be hosting an event on June 6th that will serve as a fundraiser for the Bergheim Fire Department. We have a ONE-DAY PRO MEMBER-GUEST scheduled for June 18th that promises to be a terrific event. Finally, our SUMMER JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS begin June 8-11 and are held every other week. Complete details can be found at www. clubsofcordilleraranch.com As you can see, the golf operation is in “full swing.” I hope you have the opportunity to participate in some or all of the special events we have scheduled. Make it a point to come out and enjoy the golf course and one of the most spectacular club facilities in the country! See you on the course, Marc DeWall, PGA Head Golf Professional

TeNNIS

REACHING FOR THE STARS

By Glenn Barton

High school tennis in texas is tough. The good weather allows the sport to be contested all year with a few minor untimely delays with wet courts. The heat and cold you just have to learn to deal with. Texas simply gives you more days where practice is possible. This provides us with one of those good news, bad news situations. The good news is, in Texas, there are a lot of days where

working on your game is possible. The bad news is many of your opponents are probably at the courts practicing right now. Rats! This provides for a very competitive arena which asks more from a player than in many other parts of the country. Any accomplishments achieved on a Texas tennis court have been ground out through countless hours of sweat and effort. Coach Vince Lombardi said “championships are not won on game day but in the trenches of the practice field”. Here at Cordillera we have a growing group of kids putting in the kind of time, effort, and sweat it takes to be competitive tennis players. Recently, the Boerne High School tennis team won the

22 | MAY | JUNE 2010

right to go to state for the first time in the school’s history. The team finished 8th in the state and with just a bit of luck could have been as high as 4th. Adam Gitter and Megen Hendry of Cordillera are varsity members on this outstanding team and I wanted to introduce them to you. Adam is a senior this year but has been playing varsity tennis all four of his high school years. He competes in the “Supers Division” in tennis which is the top level a junior player can achieve in Texas. Adam has put up some impressive numbers academically being a member of the Honor Society, the all district academic team, and competed at the state competition with the “Business Professionals of America” team. He will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall studying accounting in the exclusive business school with a minor in music. Adam is an accomplished guitarist as well and has performed in the “Battle of the Bands in Boerne”, the homecoming parade, talent shows, and with numerous bands. He also works the overhead projections at Our Savior Lutheran Church in San Antonio on Sundays. Adam is fun loving, respectful, humble, and a great friend in the community. Megan Hendry, a sophomore at Boerne High, has a similar work ethic achieving a very high level of

competitive tennis skills. She has been competing seriously for three years and has achieved the prestigious “champs” level in Texas. Megan is a member of “ Young Life” through her school, is in the top 10% of her class, and is a member of the “Spanish National Honor society”. A favorite activity is the family bimonthly mission trips to a Mexican orphanage where she helps build homes, works with the kids, and ministers to those in need. Megan can also be found working at the local out reach hill country daily bread ministries and in her youth church group. In today’s world you don’t meet very many kids like these two who work hard, play hard, and desire to serve others. Being a friend/coach to them has been one of life’s little perks. As a community we can all be proud of their accomplishments, humanity, and their service. There are always stumbles and disappointments along life’s path and these two have had to deal with there share. They both have responded with courage and tenacity rarely exhibited in those so young. I look forward to watching them grow in their education, their sport of tennis, and there fellowship. Cordillera Ranch tennis seems to be a hot bed of this kind of quality youth. We have approximately 45 kids in our junior classes and programs and most display the same heart, courage, and gratitude that Adam and Megan display. These are the kind of young people you can trust to reach for the stars and take America into its bright future.

GET

Outdoors By Shane Reynolds

Spring has finally arrived, and the many options our residents and Club members have to spend time with family and friends outdoors are endless. The Guadalupe River is in great shape after winter and early spring rains. All the spring fed creeks are flowing into the river and the River Club has been extremely busy since early March. The best way to enjoy the river is by kayak, compared to a canoe. Canoes and kayaks have both been around for as long as people have had a need to propel themselves through the water. Although canoes and kayaks share many of the same traits, they are different enough to confuse many first time paddlers. Canoes are much better for calm and flat water where there is little wind. Kayaks are much more efficient and streamlined and offer much greater maneuverability and stability than a

26 | MAY | JUNE 2010

canoe. A canoe also sits lower in the water and cannot get through shallow rapids and water as easy as a kayak. Although kayaks may seem to be more intimidating to new paddlers, the siton-top kayak is quite simple to learn to paddle and control. The inflatable kayak is also a great boat for beginners and offers a fun and thrilling ride through the rapids of the upper Guadalupe River. The River Club at Cordillera Ranch offers a full outfitting service for our members and their guest for kayaking, canoeing and toobing. With springtime also comes a renewed interest in fishing. Kayak fishing is still relatively new, but it’s a growing sport in Texas. With Canyon Lake Reservoir full again, there is great kayaking fishing just a short drive from Cordillera Ranch. For an even closer fishing trip from a kayak, why not try the

small lake on Swede Creek? It’s full of fish and a lot of fun for the kids. Simply contact the Outfitter at Cordillera Ranch a few days in advance to arrange for some live bait. The bass in the small lake love minnows and the lake is a great place to learn to kayak and fish in a very controlled atmosphere. The Club will be offering a kayak fishing trip late spring to Choke Canyon to fish for trophy size large mouth bass. Here is an exciting trip the Club will offer this spring. We’ll head to Riviera, Texas, which is just south of Kingsville (about 3 hours south of Boerne). This overnight trip will provide a great fishing experience for our members and their guest and will feature lodging and a full day of bay fishing from kayaks. The trip departs from Baffin Bay and traveling via boat (with kayaks loaded aboard) through the Land Cut to a remote and

exciting place called the 9-Mile Hole. Here, the fishing pressure is much, much less than Rockport and other good redfish locations. This is a legendary place where people catch 20 to 40 pound redfish on the fly in a foot of water! The Gun Club at Cordillera Ranch just started the spring sporting clays league. The league offers shooters an opportunity to shoot five hundred targets over an eight week period in a fun and recreational format. Not only does the club have a world class 10station sporting clays course, but we also have a wobble trap station set up in a sporting environment. The wobble trap offers shooters the opportunity to shoot targets flying in all different directions from many different angles. Each month the Gun Club offers a fun wobble trap tournament that features different

colored targets and a challenging scoring system. The Club recently added a handgun range as the newest amenity. The Club has also started offering the Texas Concealed Handgun License Course and over 30 members have recently taken the course. To complete your outdoor experience at Cordillera Ranch, consider taking a trail ride on the Cordillera Ranch Nature Trail. The ranch has over 8 miles of trails, and seeing the ranch on horseback will give you an entirely different perspective on the lifestyle of Cordillera Ranch. The Equestrian Club also offers both pasture and full boarding opportunities in addition to both English and Western style riding lessons. Spring has arrived, so get outdoors and enjoy the great Texas weather!

FORTHE LOVE OF THE GAME From Kansas to Italy, Bob Hill has coached more than a half dozen collegiate and professional basketball teams.

By: Ben Schooley

I

never took a job for the money. I took every job to win.” And Robert “Bob” Hill has certainly won. From a humble beginning in Ohio, Hill has gone on to coach more than a half dozen collegiate and professional basketball teams, and has amassed a resume that stretches from Kansas to Italy. Hill has coached some of the most famous players in the game, and has devoted the better part of his professional career to going wherever the game takes him. Now working in a consulting and development capacity for the NBA, Bob and his wife Pam are enjoying the fruits of their labor right here in Cordillera Ranch. And with over 30 years of coaching, the Hills have certainly earned it. The consummate athlete, Hill has spent his entire life involved in athletics. He would run cross country as a way to get in shape for basketball, and then play baseball in the spring. A stand-out in both basketball and baseball, Hill was offered scholarships in both. “My dad never went to college, so it was really special that I was able to go to Bowling Green. When I went, it was on a full scholarship for both baseball and basketball. That’s pretty rare now. Athletes tend to specialize more. Looking back, I probably should have picked one, but I enjoyed both sports and it was a great four years.” As Hill completed college, he quickly began looking toward professional sports. After excelling at sports throughout his collegiate years, some professional squads took notice. “I went to a veteran’s camp with an ABA team, but the (San Diego) Padres quickly drafted me in ‘71. So I went to the Northwest League in the state of Washington. It’s in the TriCities area. We were the first championship team the Padres ever had. However, at the end of the summer I was released.” Before Hill could even look toward his professional basketball aspirations, the world of coaching was quickly introduced to him. “After playing minor-league baseball, I had gone home and received a call from Pat Haley, the head coach for Bowling Green. He asked me what I was doing, and when he learned I had just returned to the area, he told me to pack my stuff and get on campus. He needed an assistant coach and I was more than happy to give it a try.” However, in order for Hill to enter the coaching ranks, he actually had to re-enroll in school. “Back then you had to have your Masters Degree. So what the school did was they made me a full time coach and they paid me a very, very low salary and I had to go to grad school. I was in a fraternity and my big brother was another assistant coach, so I just roomed with him. He helped me out a lot. I never had any money, so it didn’t bother me being broke.” During this time, Hill had also recently begun dating his future wife, Pam, whom he married in 1974. CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 31

FEATURE With a growing family (their oldest son Cameron had recently been born), Hill realized that coaching could be his career. “I didn’t think about coaching that much when I was in college, but once the reality set in that I wasn’t going to be a pro athlete, you begin to realize you need a career. After getting released (from the minor leagues), it just kind of evolved. I didn’t wake up and say ‘I’m going to conquer the world of coaching’. It was just a natural progression.” And that progression continued to take the Hills higher and higher up the coaching ladder. After a brief stint at the University of Pittsburgh, Hill became an assistant at the University of Kansas, which is one of the strongest basketball programs in the country. “After Pittsburgh, we were on to the University of Kansas. I knew they had great history and tradition, and I was thrilled to get that job. So we jumped in Pam’s old Camaro with our youngest son and drove down there. We were blessed to spend 8 great years there, and it was really a very special place. We also had our other 2 sons there (Chris and Casey).” One thing the Hills realized quickly is that athletics at their level is hard, not only on the court, but it is hard on the family. The travel, the work demands, and the erratic schedule were difficult to navigate, but the Hills managed. Pam says, “It was difficult for me. I recognized his work ethic early on, and it wasn’t a shock to me that I was going to spend a lot of time alone. We never knew it any

other way. He was just always working.” Bob adds, “It was hard for me, too. You move forward as a father and your kids get older, and become more and more of a presence; it becomes harder and harder to leave. I would make an effort to get up and see them off to school, even if I had gotten in at 3am. In college ball you have to travel during the summer, but in the off time, I spent every second at home. As the boys got older it was great because the kids could go to practice and come to the games. I included them in as much as we could. The kids went to every game, and we were there for everything.” Looking back, Pam recollects the entire experience for the children. “We moved them probably 16 times. The kids were constantly moving. They all have different recollections of where HOME is. This unit of family came so close together – we knew we had to depend on one another, and we took our things and created a home. They’re the best of friends now. You can put them in any environment, and they make the most of it. They flourished in every environment. We tried to screw ‘em up, Bob joked, but they’re great kids. They’ve done such a great job w/ all of it.” Never someone to be static or complacent, Hill strove to continue pushing his career forward. “My next stop was with the New York Knicks. Hubie Brown was the coach, and I had worked his camp during the summers. Mike Fratello was his assistant, and Mike put

I NEVER “ TOOK A JOB FOR THE MONEY.

I TOOK EVERY JOB TO WIN.

32 | MAY | JUNE 2010

the staff together for those camps. Rick Pitino was an assistant, and when he took a job with Providence, I was given the opportunity to take Rick’s spot.” With his new job, and a higher salary, Pam took off to New York to find a home. “I figured we could buy a nice house in the New York area. Pam looked for weeks, but couldn’t find anything in New York that we could afford!! So we bought this little corner lot house in Madison, NJ. It turned out to be a great little place, and we enjoyed it while we were there for two years.” Following a brief stint in the CBA, Hill was given an offer to coach in Italy. “I had a few interviews with NBA teams, but we got this offer to go to Italy. Bologna, Italy. I had gone over and done camps, and they had asked if I had ever considered coming over. Sure enough, they call me up after the New York Knicks job, and so off we went. At the time I was interviewing the Charlotte Hornets, and I was unsure about that job, too. But we ended up going to Bologna, signed the contract, and I took (former player) Michael Ray Richardson with me. And we did good there, eventually becoming Italian Cup Champions.” For the family, it was quite the adventure. “Cameron went the whole year of Italian school not understanding a damn word the teacher said”, Hill laughs. “All 3 of the boys were playing basketball and just had really great years. We lived two blocks from the train station, and Pam would just take them out of school and go tour the country. At Christmas time we’d

all go skiing in Austria, so we tried to fit in a lot of fun.” With success following him at virtually every level, Hill finally broke into the NBA as a head coach, although it was a brief tenure. “The New York team was decimated by injuries. Patrick Ewing was a rookie, and they were just struggling. So they got rid of Hubie (Brown) and made me the head coach. We had 6 CBA guys on the roster, and we continued to have a hard time, so they got rid of me. One of the realities of pro sports is that if you take a job, you’re going to get fired. It’s just part of your existence. You don’t take it personal. You just move on to the next opportunity.” Following several years as the Indiana Pacers’ head coach, that opportunity would eventually bring him to San Antonio as the Spurs head coach. “We came to San Antonio in ‘94. I had a reputation and a good coaching record, and it was a great organization. The team was very mature – lots of vet players. They had drafted well, the character on the team was high, and it was a fun team to coach. Early on I wasn’t sure how good we’d be, but I was confident. We started out that year 6-9, and we went to Houston. We had David (Robinson), and they had Hakeem (Olajuwon). It was a big deal. I remember just putting a bunch of motivational stuff on the board in the locker-room, and it must have worked because we won. We finished 56-11 the rest of the way, went to the Western Conference Finals, and David was the MVP.” While Hill enjoyed success with the Spurs, the team as a whole had very positive effect on him. “The culture of that team was spiritually motivated, and was led by David and Avery (Johnson) and Terry Cummings. My teams have always had a moment of

silence, but we were in Tennessee for an exhibition game against the Knicks, and David gave a prayer during our moment of silence. I had never had a player give a prayer. He caught up with me and asked if they could have a prayer before every game. So I told him I was happy to have a prayer, so the next game Avery gave the prayer, and then Terry. That prayer became a significant part of preparation for the game. We were in Seattle once, and we could never beat Seattle. But they were feeling good. Avery gave this prayer about a passage in the bible about a hurricane that destroys the city, and he compared the Spurs to the town. The team went nuts. We won the game. We won a lot of games with that team.” The Spurs, with David Robinson and Sean Elliot both injured, struggled the following year. And as Hill has seen before, they let him go. Never one to sit around, different offers found their way to Hill’s desk. “I had two offers – one from the Greek League, and it was for a ton of money. The 2nd one was Fordham University. I just kind of felt it wasn’t the right time to leave with the kids at the ages. I wanted to be available to them. They would have had to stay here, so I made a huge mistake and took the Fordham job. It was awful. I have had a very privileged career, so I understand what it takes to win, and I knew almost immediately that it just wasn’t going to work at Fordham. Then I made a mistake thinking I could change it. It was an impossible situation.” The balance between money and winning is one that Hill has never wavered on. And the Fordham job was no different. “You coach for achievement, to win. Not to see how much money I can make. That’s just my nature to want to win. I always felt that if I did a good enough job, I’d get paid. And I have. But I never took a job for the money; I took the job to win.” Knowing that New Jersey was not where they wanted to live, they returned to the area they fell in love with while coaching the Spurs: the Texas Hill Country. Pam says, “The kids were graduating, and when Bob was coaching the Spurs, we really fell in love with the community. So we decided to come back here and follow our kids to college. We spent a weekend and we found 3 houses – 1 in San Antonio, 1 in Boerne, and our realtor told us about this new place, Cordillera. We drove thru the gate and Bob and said ‘We’re in’. We

loved it immediately. Our realtor showed us 2 or 3 houses and then we came to a Damon Christofilis (Cordillera Ranch Preferred Builder) spec house. The house wasn’t totally done yet, but we loved it. Damon has been amazing to work with. We came to an agreement, flew in, and Damon was ready to go, and so we moved here in 2003.” Happily relocated in their beautiful home in Cordillera Ranch, opportunities continued to be available to Bob. However, the Hills felt that they had finally created a HOME and were not about to let that go. Pam explains, “We were here a year and he got the Seattle (Supersonics) job. For the first time ever, we said we’re keeping a home. We went to Seattle and rented an apartment in the city. So we had this beautiful home in Cordillera Ranch and the city life of Seattle. Not one of the 3 boys ever really lived here, but if you ask them where is HOME, they all say Cordillera Ranch. For the first time, this will be HOME, and we couldn’t be

happier.” After some time in Seattle, the team was moved to Oklahoma City, and Bob returned to Cordillera Ranch. He is actively working with the NBA now, and tours the country training and talking with the NBA’s “D-League” players and helps them to develop both on and off the court during the summers. A perfect fit for Hill as his passion for the game and for the players is evident. Pam adds, “I would tell you that his love of what he’s doing and his commitment to doing it right is his passion. He would coach for free. It’s entirely ingrained in who he is and what he does. I manage the finances because Bob doesn’t care about that. You can tell a player that is doing it for the money, or is it doing it for the love of the game.” Hill finishes, “It’s been my life’s work and it’s what I do. It’s what I’m going to do. I’ve got some things on the table right now and we’ll see how things play out.”

KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL

May 27-June 7

Founded by Rod Kennedy, the Kerrville Folk Festival has run annually since 1972. It is the longest continuously running music festival of its kind in North America. For 18 straight days and nights each May and June, over 30,000 guests converge on Kerrville. The Festival is known internationally as a Mecca for singer songwriters of varying musical style. It’s a place where those just developing their skills have the opportunity to play their music along- side master craftsmen. More than just a “folk music” festival, Kerrville offers music of many styles including traditional folk, bluegrass, acoustic rock, blues, country, jazz, and Americana. The common thread is songwriting. The focus of the festivals is to promote emerging artists while giving our audience exposure to both new and recognized, seasoned talent. Major label artists such as Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Michelle Shocked, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Robert Earl Keen, Lucinda Williams, and Nancy Griffith played Kerrville early in their careers. Through the years, the Kerrville stage has seen other nationally known artists like Peter Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Janis Ian and Arlo Guthrie, while others such as singer/songwriter/actor Ronny Cox take the stage on our stages any given year. GVTC

FIBER-TO-THE-HOME NETWORK COMES TO CORDILLERA. Cordillera Ranch knows that you don’t want to sacrifice access to state-of-theart telecommunications to enjoy the serenity of the Texas Hill Country. That’s why we have selected GVTC, the region’s premiere communications provider, to deliver a bundle of communications and entertainment services that our residents find unmatched in value. GVTC provides crystal clear phone service, blazing internet speeds and reliable security monitoring across Cordillera Ranch. It delivers them over

a world-class network, backs them up with superior customer service and offers them at competitive prices. “Whether you’re working from home, protecting your investment or just staying in touch with friends and family, GVTC offers a package to fit your lifestyle,” said George O’Neal, GVTC’s vice president-network engineering. “We pride ourselves in providing Cordillera Ranch residents with the kind of advanced communications services normally found only in a large city.” GVTC has served South Central Texas for more than half a century — and it’s grown along with Hill Country residents’ demands for new and innovative services. Despite its growth, GVTC maintains a high level of accountability to customers and strong community ties. As part of its ongoing commitment to keep up with customers’ evolving communications needs, GVTC is

spending $35 million to build a fiberto-the-home network unmatched by any other provider in the area. Over that world-class infrastructure, GVTC can deliver HD cable television and broadband speeds of up to 40 Mbps — the fastest available in South Texas. GVTC already has connected Cordillera’s Country Club and Villa areas with its fiber-to-the-home network, and it will upgrade all of Cordillera Ranch by the end of 2012. “Fiber-to-the-home technology allows GVTC to deliver the kind of communications and entertainment services customers are demanding now and will demand well into the future,” O’Neal said. “Cordillera Ranch residents want access to services that enhance the quality of their lives, and we’re using the best available technology to deliver them.”

GOLF SEASON IN THE TEXAS By Chris Hill

e know it’s now officially Spring. Not because the groundhog saw his shadow or because the temperatures started to rise and the grass started to turn green. We know its spring because The Masters golf tournament officially told us it is Spring. Every April, even for many non golfers, The Masters jump starts Spring and the golf season for so many of us. For that reason, it just seems like it’s a good time to talk about golf. We have always emphasized the fact that the Cordillera Ranch lifestyle is about way more than just golf and we try not to overdo it, but this time of year I can’t help but to focus on golf in Cordillera Ranch. There are some fantastic things going on with the Cordillera Ranch golf course and its important that you as property owners and members are aware of them. 44 | MAY | JUNE 2010

DALLAS MORNING NEWS RANKINGS Every Spring for the past twenty one years, The Dallas Morning News has produced its annual “Texas Golf” section which is widely considered the most thorough and unbiased source of information about golf courses in Texas. Because they are in Texas and only focusing on golf in Texas, they put an emphasis on having their panelists see and rate the many great courses in the state. The panel consists of nearly 100 men and women golfers across the state ranging from professionals, competitive amateurs, superintendents, architects, journalists and others in the golf industry. The point is, these people understand golf and golf courses. They are all given a set of standard criteria which they judge the courses by. The Texas Golf section came out in March this year and the Cordillera Ranch golf course continues to garner a lot of positive attention. For the second year in a row, our Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course was ranked number 4 in the list of the top 100 courses in the state. In addition to the golf course ranking, it should be no surprise to many of you that our 16th hole was voted the “Most Beautiful Hole in Texas” by the panel. As I stated in last years article “What Does a Golf Course Ranking Mean?”, no matter whether you play golf or not, the accolades that our golf course continues to receive provide a very positive impact on all properties and memberships in Cordillera Ranch. To view the full article go to www.cordilleraranchliving.com/ pastissues and click on the May/June 2009 issue.

NEW GOLF SUPERINTENDENT As most of you know by now we lost our first and only golf course superintendent, KD Davis, at the end of February to Southern Hills Golf Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Southern Hills has a remarkable history in golf and has hosted numerous US Opens, PGA Championships and other major championships. KD was involved from the beginning of the golf course construction in 2005 until this year and did many great things for our golf course. The fact that a club like Southern Hills searched out and hired our golf course superintendent is a testament to the quality and reputation that the Cordillera Ranch golf course has in the industry. While we hated to see KD go we are happy for the opportunity he got and that the product he delivered at Cordillera Ranch allowed him to take one of the top golf course superintendent jobs in the country. We are pleased to introduce Mark Semm as our new Head Golf Course Superintendent. Mark has more than 18 years of experience in the golf course industry at some of the most exclusive clubs in the United States. During that time, Mark has displayed his expertise in turfgrass management and understanding how to deliver a golf course that meets the highest standards. Mark’s resume speaks for itself, beginning with his initial exposure to golf course agronomics at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota (the site of numerous USGA and PGA championships). For three years in the late nineties he was an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters Golf Tournament. Following his time at Augusta, Mark was the Head Golf Course Superintendent at The Vaquero

Club outside of Fort Worth. This is particularly important experience because Vaquero has the same mix of grasses (zoysia fairways, bermuda roughs MARK SEMM and bentgrass greens) that we have at Cordillera Ranch. Mark has spent the past 6 years as the Head Golf Course Superintendent at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Austin. The quality of these facilities and high level of golf experience that is expected at all of these clubs is what gives us great excitement at the opportunity that Mark has to take our beautiful golf course to the next level. Mark said “I look forward to continuing the success of Cordillera Ranch and providing you with a course of excellence. My family and I are excited to be here and look forward to meeting all of you.” Mark is a graduate of Iowa State University, where he received his B.A. in Horticulture with Turfgrass specialization. As a Class A member with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, he is extremely qualified to take over for KD. Mark, his wife Meg and their 2 kids have moved to Boerne from Austin and he began full time in March. This spring should be the best year we’ve ever had with the golf course. For the first time since we opened in 2006, we’ve had adequate rains to make the grasses thrive. We have one of the finest golf courses around right here in our back yard and I hope you are able to get out and enjoy it as often as possible in 2010.

Pasadera Builders Builds New Villas in Cordillera Ranch

48 | MAY | JUNE 2010

Cordillera Ranch boasts some of the finest homes that the Hill Country has to offer. Beautiful custom homes dot the landscape and create an environment that has made Cordillera Ranch what it is today – one of the finest communities in the great state of Texas. One of the last missing pieces of the puzzle was more of a “lock-and-leave” product that could be utilized by those that vacation in the Hill Country, or by those that wanted a more quaint residence. Enter Gabe Garcia and Pasadera Builders. Garcia, whose family has been in the construction industry since 1962, is no stranger to the Hill Country and Cordillera Ranch. Garcia and his father were building custom homes in the Houston market, and found the opportunity to help with the Villas a great reason to get out of the city and get back to the Hill Country. “Chris (Hill) and I worked together years ago in Houston. David

(Hill) as a developer worked with my Dad back in the 80s on several different projects. Their knowledge of what we do as builders was very important. They wanted to find a builder that can produce a product at the level they want and in order to compete with the very best. My dad and I are originally from the San Antonio area, and always wanted to leave Houston. So we saw this as a great opportunity to get back here.” And Pasadera Builders has certainly not squandered that opportunity. “It’s been like coming home to family working with Cordillera Ranch. The care and attention that they put into every aspect of the development is evident and by far the

best aspect of Cordillera Ranch.” That care and attention is evident in the entire project. “My favorite aspect of the villas is that we’re able to keep doing exactly what we’ve been doing for the last 15 years, and that’s providing a high level of quality. The project, while it’s been talked about as a townhouse project, is completely different. They’re all single family, free-standing houses. They’re not attached. The term ‘villa’ is perfect in that it describes it as a true Tuscan village feel. It’s the authenticity that is key. The look and materials are authentic to Tuscan construction. We’re using Italian clay roofs, traditional integral colored stucco, masonry details that you’d find in a Tuscan

village. In the interior we’re using all natural imported stones, most from the European region. Our wood flooring is a traditional floor designed to reflect the authenticity of the other features. The doors are true wood doors – solid wood – that are paneled like you’d see in a Tuscan area home. The entire project is one with the highest authenticity and standards.” The entire Villas Project is well on its way. Four units are currently under construction, and a total of 26 residences will go in with the first phase. A total of 3 phases and 75 units, the project is sure to become yet another wonderful addition to the entire community.

F9AC89@9F DFC:=@9. ;F5J9@@ 7CAD5BM Every home in Cordillera Ranch boasts the finest in construction and design, however, sometimes the residents might like to change a thing or two with their custom homes. The search for a quality remodeler can sometimes be dicey, but one should look no further than Jonathan Gravell, owner of Gravell & Company. Gravell can handle every aspect of custom remodeling, room additions, outdoor living, and virtually any other application. Gravell states, “I think that’s why people have enjoyed working with me. It doesn’t matter what type of project we are doing, they are confident that I am someone that is involved in every step of the process and will ensure their satisfaction.” Additionally, the style of the home is something that Gravell can quickly accommodate as

well. “It can be a Hill Country home, or more modern. It could have a specific style, and I can quickly work within those parameters to bring a result that surpasses their expectations.” Gravell has worked in the construction industry virtually his entire life and has a degree from Texas A&M in Construction Science. That education has kept him abreast of all the latest developments in the industry. “Construction is not sticks and bricks anymore, it is a science that if done correctly will yield a highly efficient long lasting product. Most people call this “green” construction nowadays, but this has always been our standard.” Lastly, working with friends and neighbors right here in the Hill Country is Gravell’s main motivation. “I spend a lot of time with my

clients and walk them through the entire process. That time together enables us to become friends. Looking back, I can honestly say I’m friends with every single person I’ve ever done work with. We are approved to do work in Cordillera and we would be glad to get you over to one of our recent project to show you what we can do for you. If you’re looking at a room addition, a kitchen remodel, or an outdoor living improvement, give Jonathan a call. As his past clients can attest, you will not be disappointed.

Ron said. As the morning sun shines through the canopies of oak trees in a quiet backyard paradise, there is little question as to how the Robertses found such peace and serenity in the land. Coming to Cordillera from a bustling suburb of Chicago, Ron and Phyllis, along with their daughter, Lexi, and son, Gregory, discovered a beautiful piece of creation in the nature around them.

After spending time in San Antonio for their tenth anniversary, Phyllis and Ron began mulling over moving south. “At the same time [we visited Texas], we were looking at moving anyway,” Phyllis said. “We knew [Ron] was going to retire in a few years, so we knew that we could pretty much go anywhere—our minds were completely open.” They found a realtor in the area who connected them with Cordillera sales representative Kevin Best, and the Robertses’ journey began. “Kevin took us around to several locations, and Cordillera seemed like it was a good community, even though there was still the question about the golf course,” Ron laughed. “But we saw this, and we really liked it.” “We looked at each other and at that point, we said, ‘Should we do this?’ Well, we had nothing to lose!” Phyllis said happily. “So, we bought the lot that day. After the purchase, we spoke with Kevin about potential home builders, and he suggested we check out Ray Stadler. We began a conversation with him, and he met us the next time we came out here. He walked the lot with us, and he showed us the homes in Cordillera that were under construction.” But Stadler didn’t stop there. “It was the deciding factor, the moment we knew he truly cared,” Phyllis continued. “When we were finished at Cordillera, Ray turned to us and said ‘I don’t think I’ve showed you everything I can show you—do you mind following me for about twenty minutes?’ He ended up taking us to his personal home to show us what he had done. We knew instantly that he was passionate about working with us, and we ended up becoming friends.” “For him to have taken us to his personal home really meant a lot to us,” Ron added. “With all the personal attention he had given us, and looking at the quality in the construction he’d shown us, we were overwhelmed with what we saw as a fantastic person, in addition to a really great builder. We were excited: this was it! We had our builder, we had our property, and now we just needed a time to start the construction.” The family was more than excited about relocating to Cordillera. “The kids fell in love with the area,” Ron said, “and, of course, so did we. The Boerne school district is one of the best in the

state—which was the whole intent of our move. That, along with the wonderful people that we met no matter where we went—everyone was so friendly, so much different than what we were walking away from—made us know that we were going to the right place.” “Learning a few Spanish words” along the way, the Robertses became very involved in their homebuilding process. “We took our time, we tweaked and twisted some things and got everything in place, and a few years later we broke ground,” Ron said. “As the house was being built, I was still working in Illinois, but Phyllis came down here to work with the house. We started construction and had a fantastic time with it. Phyllis was very involved in the process, working every day on-site. We brought cantaloupes and watermelon and bottles of water for everyone who was working; it was a really fun experience.” And the experience shows. Walking in to the Robertses’ home, one is greeted by a giant window looking out over the pool and the gorgeous backyard, giving an instant feeling of a bright and open home. Beautiful red glass tiles set into the floor add a unique sparkle to the entryway, and various decorations with simple, geometric patterns add color and clean lines to the Hill Country home. Wrapping next to the foyer is a set of winding stairs, finished with wroughtiron rails. Phyllis and Ron both explained that the staircase was a large part of the custom design process, as they needed the steps to be extra wide. “Ray had me walk up the stairs after they finished them, and I still didn’t feel completely comfortable,” Phyllis said. “He had no problem starting over—he wanted to make sure that I was absolutely comfortable with the stairs I’d be walking up and down every day.” “Most people don’t like building a home; Stadler made it completely a fun experience,” Phyllis continued. “There was no stress. They made sure everything was done one hundred percent, but were open to any input we wanted to give them. They would go out of their way to listen to our ideas.” In fact, it was such a great experience for the Robertses, they didn’t want to stop there. “When everything was com pleted, Phyllis turned to me and said, ‘What am I going to do from here?’

“We looked at each other and at that point, we said, ‘Should we do this?’ Well, we had nothing to lose!” CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 63

She’d had all the fun and excitement of building the house while I was traveling for my business,” Ron said. “We talked about it for a while, and decided we wanted to build another house. We approached Ray about doing a spec home with him, even though it wasn’t anything Stadler had done before.” “After talking for a number of weeks, we eventually partnered up with him, and we bought a piece of property almost right across the street,” Ron continued. “Phyllis could look out the front door and watch progress, or walk over there to work. She went through the whole process again with the Stadlers, adding personal touches along the way.” The home sold a month before completion, giving the

64 | MAY | JUNE 2010

Robertses even more motivation to continue in their building ventures. Lexi and Gregory even added a few touches to make the home building process more enjoyable. “The kids cut out flowers out of construction paper and decorated the outhouse that was over there—we did fun things like that to motivate us to stay on top of things,” Phyllis said with a laugh. “I can’t say enough about the fact that I have not met anyone here who has not helped us,” Phyllis said. “Starting from Kevin [Best]’s hospitality when he took us around and answered our questions without rushing us, to Catherine and the time she spent with me decorating and picking out colors and fabrics.

“All in all, everyone we worked with was so friendly and nice. Plus, to have friends in the Stadlers that honest and that Christian made our whole experience wonderful,” Phyllis said. Ron added, “We’re part of the fromChicago-to-Cordillera group around here, and everyone is so friendly and open. The neighbors, the schools, the golf course—yeah, we did get our golf course!—everything, in comparison to anywhere else we could raise our kids, this is definitely it.”
