o you ever look back on life and think about people that made a major impact on you at an early age but you haven’t seen them in years? You might reflect on how much a high school football coach influenced your work ethic or how a teacher steered you in a certain career path. For those of you that know me, you may be wondering right now if I’m about to tell a story about how Tracy Harris taught me what cards to “hit” on in blackjack… well, those stories are not quite fit for print so we’ll leave that alone. I’m referring to a man that dedicated his life to teaching, and he approached it in a way that was truly unique (but parallels our feature story). John Mitchell’s career spanned 46 years and the majority of that was spent at Lufkin High School. The irony of Mr. Mitchell’s significant influence on me is that he taught English Literature, probably my least favorite subject. Candidly, I really couldn’t stand English Literature – it bored me. However, that is what made Mitchell so uniquely great: he focused more on challenging our thoughts and questioning our beliefs than preaching Chaucer. Sure, there was plenty of required reading such as Beowulf, MacBeth and other fiction I’ve since forgotten, but I always found the Cliff Notes versions more efficient in getting to the point. Mitchell’s class was more about debate, critical thinking, challenging people’s minds and preparing his classes for college. No offense to the other teachers at LHS, but I’d say without question that no teacher prepared 27 graduating classes better for college than John Mitchell did. Mitchell crafted his hour as entertaining, clever and thought-provoking as any teacher or professor ever could. Let’s face it; keeping the attention of high school kids was a feat unto itself. Mr. Mitchell’s guiding principle was to enable his students to obtain knowledge and then to apply that knowledge to life’s situations. Unfortunately, Mr. Mitchell lost his battle with cancer on August 28, 2011, but left behind a legacy of students who are forever grateful for the passion he had in shaping lives. Mitchell traveled with students all over the world where he made each country, each museum, and each church his living curriculum. Mr. Mitchell earned plenty of prestigious awards for his work in the classroom, but was really motivated by making sure his students pushed the limits of their minds. While Mr. Mitchell will be truly missed, it’s fitting that this issue features Trinity University icon Colleen Grissom who shares Mitchell’s passion for students and literature. Enjoy her story about John Mitchell how her 8th grade teacher instilled a belief in her that ultimately has led her to be one of the most revered and admired faculty at Trinity University, both by her peers and her students. Thanks Mr. Mitchell, Sincerely,

Charlie Hill Vice President Cordillera Ranch

Golf GOLF

It is hard to believe the Holidays are right around the corner. This is such a great time to play golf in South Texas, and we have a number of big events left on the schedule that I hope you will be able to participate in. The popular Guest Days will be held November 3rd and 4th and are such a great way to showcase Cordillera Ranch and the spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at a discounted guest fee rate. We also have a Guest Day planned for all of the Ranch members on November 10th. We have a number of Ranch members who have expressed interest in starting to play golf and upgrading their membership to Full Golf. This is a great time to bring out a few friends or business clients and enjoy a special day on the course. The MGA Cup Final is taking place on November 5th and will mark the end of the year points race for the MGA. This format was introduced by the MGA for the first time this year, and the event has been very popular. It should be an exciting day as the MGA crowns their first Cup champion. The MGA Turkey Shoot Scramble is set for Saturday November 19th so get your team together and sign up in the Golf Shop. Sunday November 6th we will be hosting the Couples Invitational. This event is also a great way to showcase the Club. Member couples invite a guest couple to play golf and Chef Dwight has a gourmet meal planned for participants following play. For the first time Cordillera Ranch will be hosting the annual Joe Black Cup Matches November 14-15. You can read more about this event on page 18. As the Captain of the Southern Texas team this year, I am so excited for our Club as well as the opportunity to share in the camaraderie and competition that have defined these matches over the last 30 years. If you have the opportunity, come out and watch some great golf on those two days. As you can see, we still have some great things planned for Fall. The Cordillera Ranch Golf and Trading Shop is stocked and ready to take care of your Holiday shopping needs. There are some great gift ideas we have for you so stop in and speak to one of our professional staff to get you started. Thanks to all of you for your support this year of our golf operation and we wish you a blessed Holiday season. See you on the course, Marc DeWall, PGA Director of Golf, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch mdewall@cordilleraranch.com | 830.336.4653

TIPSANDTRICKS Chip & Pitch - The Difference What is the difference between a chip and a pitch? One common expression is that a pitch has more air time than ground time. Conversely a chip has less air time than ground time. Trajectory is therefore a major factor differentiating between a pitch and a chip. Technical style will be different between a chip and a pitch. Chips are usually a firm-wristed, one-lever stroke, while pitches may use more cocking or hinging of the wrist and hands to create a second lever. The most important common denominator between a chip and a pitch will be a flat left wrist during impact. The pictures illustrate the basic difference between the two in the backswing positions:

GOLF

For the first time ever, Cordillera Ranch will host the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches November 14-15. This annual Ryder Cup-style event features the top club professionals from the Southern Texas PGA versus their counterparts from the Northern Texas PGA. The fierce rivalry for Texas bragging rights between two of the PGA of America’s most prestigious sections has been marked by close matches, dramatic shots, uncompromising sportsmanship and friendships that last throughout the lives of the competitors. The event was named after PGA Professional Joe Black, who now lives in Dripping Springs, Texas. Mr. Black has been a member of both PGA sections and is a Life Member of the PGA of America. Mr. Black also spent time as a player and Rules Official on the PGA Tour before becoming President of the PGA of America (in 1981-82). His long career and extensive history of mentoring club professionals throughout Texas and his involvement in the event is truly an honor. Marc DeWall, Cordillera Ranch Director of Golf, was selected as the captain of the Southern Texas PGA team this year. “It is an incredible honor to be selected as the captain of this year’s team. After getting to participate the last two years, I can only say that it is one of the highlights of my career as a golf professional, “ said DeWall. “The camaraderie you form with your teammates is an incredible experience. I have the utmost respect for the players who qualify because each one earns his position on the team while meeting the demands of a very challenging career as a club professional,” added DeWall. “I look forward to showcasing Cordillera Ranch as the venue this year as well as leading a great group of golf professionals from Southern Texas.” The tournament consists of two full days of competition. The teams will meet for 18 holes of Four-Ball matches in the morning of the first day, and 18 holes of Foursome matches in the afternoon. The final day will feature 12 Singles matches followed by a closing luncheon and awards ceremony. The historical record of the matches is extremely close, with the Northern Texas team holding the narrowest of margins with a 15-14-1 lead. The NTPGA won last year’s tournament, held at Four Seasons Resort & Club in Las Colinas, by a 13-11 margin. “The best things about these matches is the great competition and camaraderie among the team members, and players from the other side,” said DeWall. “There’s a great desire to win for both teams but also a healthy respect for your competitor. We look forward to a great couple of days I invite everyone out to watch some great golf!”

All of the flight winners then competed in the LoneStar Shoot-Out to determine the winners of the event. The format was well received by participants as it gave everyone a chance to play with numerous different people during the course of the competition. Highlighting the Players Pool party on the first evening was a Jack Nicklaus themed putting contest showcasing some of Jack’s greatest holes from his Signature Golf Corses from around the world. Various Nicklaus prizes and memorabilia were awarded to the winners. Lance Welch and his guest Tim Ping were crowned the Grand Champions of the 2011 C-Star MemberGuest. DINING

Welcome to 22 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2011

Welcome to the world of wines! Whether you are a wine aficionado, a novice wanting to explore and learn more about wine, or simply, like most of us, someone who just loves to drink wine…..Cellar Club is here for you! The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch is very excited to launch Cellar Club, offering exclusive preferred benefits to our members who desire a well-rounded wine experience from select boutique wines to lesser known great valued vintages. What better way to learn, explore and receive great value than with the camaraderie of

fellow members and friends who share a universal love of wine! Our mission is to create a club community of wine aficionados along with the convenience of purchasing wines direct from the Club’s new Pre-sale Wine Shop, located in the Club’s Tennis Center. Competitive pricing will be offered on all wines sold in the Shop, however, additional preferred pricing will be offered exclusively to Cellar Club members. Cellar Club members benefit from our Club’s purchasing power to access incredible deals on some of the best wines available.

Cellar Club Members will receive the following benefits: • 20% off Club Wine List Inventory • 20% off Wine Dinners • New release tastings • Preferred pricing at our Pre-sale Wine Shop • Exclusive access to incredible vendor deals • Access to Highly Allocated Wines • Private consultations to help fill your home wine cellar

In addition to the Cellar Club we will be partnering with wineries and showcasing their wines around the club. For the months of November and December we will be featuring two giants from Napa: David Arthur Vineyards and Hill Family Estates. The David Arthur wines are produced with a dedication to crafting dynamic, complex vintages. With every bottling comes a commitment to producing distinctive wines with a focus on vineyard site-expression and structure, a benchmark of David Arthur Vineyards’ winemaking philosophy. In 2008, Nile Zacherle joined David Arthur Vineyards as winemaker. “Nile is the ideal compliment to our team at David Arthur,” says David Long, cofounder of

David Arthur Vineyards. “His passion for excellence and crafting wines of quality and structure coincides with our philosophy and vision.” After three decades of farming grapes for some of Napa Valley’s finest wine producers, Doug Hill and the family decided that their family should enter the wine business. Hill Family Estate was born out of the desire for the family to work together; sharing the experience of crafting fine wines that showcased the grapes that Doug farmed and then introducing those wines to the consumer at a tasting room in their hometown and American foodie capital, Yountville, California. Doug farms the grapes and helps craft the wine and Ryan Hill runs the sales division, working hard to get the Hill Family Estate wines

placed in select accounts for you to enjoy. Carly Hill lives and works in San Diego and hosts tastings and dinners in Southern California while Darci Hill can be found at the tasting room, with Jack (the dog) by her side, tending to the flowers and enhancing our curb appeal. Hill Family Estate is the culmination of Doug’s vision - a way to share his love of the valley, farming and wine with his children and wine lovers everywhere. Both David Long and Ryan Hill will be visiting us in the spring of 2012 for a fantastic laid back wine dinner. Make sure to look for the save the date announcement because this one of a kind event will surely sell out!

Thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors for their generous contributions that helped make the inaugural Homes 4 Wounded Heroes at Cordillera Ranch an overwhelming success. The event, which raised funds for wounded warriors through the Military Warriors Support Foundation, raised $135,000 thanks to some of the major sponsors including Humana Military, Property Masters, USAA, Harland Clarke, Wal-Mart and Cordillera Ranch. These funds are used by MWSF to provide homes to wounded soldiers - this event netted enough money for the MWSF to give away another 6 homes. At the event, John Hyland and his two sons were awarded a new home. Upload your own photos to www.facebook.com/cordillera.ranch for a chance to be featured in next issue’s Ranch Scene

When asked if she has any regrets in life, Colleen Grissom responds quickly: “Two. One is that I didn’t get a dog until I was 35. The other is that I didn’t get a cat until I was 52.” Now with 3 cats and 4 toy poodles, Grissom continues her tenure at Trinity University in the English Department, a school she was worked at for over 50 years. Respected lecturer, professor, and author, Grissom also has an amazingly sharp wit that has made her a legend on campus and in the Cordillera Ranch community. She begins, “I was born in Mount Pleasant, Texas on January 19, 1934. It was in the middle of the first great American Depression. My father was a civil engineer, and my mom was a homemaker. My dad was ultimately city manager in Carthage, Texas before his death.” Growing up, Grissom had simple aspirations: simply to be Tarzan. “I wanted to be Johnny Westmiller from the old Tarzan movies. I organized the kids to play Tarzan all the time. I was always Tarzan. I made a neighbor boy be Cheetah. I covered all my walls with movie posters because it made it less boring than Carthage, Texas. And because there was always a happy ending in the movies. I’m still looking for that in real life.” Early on, Grissom found the escape she sought in the books she read ferociously. “I loved to read. I read fast, because my mother would have me sit at the table and I’d ask if I could finish my chapter. I finished them as quickly as I could. I sucked lemons and read like a crazy person. Somewhere, in my case, it was the 8th grade, a teacher made me think I was bright. He wanted me to know that I could understand and do well with books and literature. The first day of 10th grade, there was a spelling bee, and I won it. From there, the rest is history.” Grissom went on to various levels of leadership as a youth, from church organizations to the girl scouts to organized sports. Each time Grissom would ultimately find herself as the leader of the group; a position she has always found to be natural for her. That love of leadership and books naturally pushed her toward teaching. “I was valedictorian and ‘Most Witty’ for the graduating high school class of ‘52. I was given a full scholarship to Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas. It was $50. That was the per year cost. No kidding. The school is now part of the Texas A&M campus, so I’m an Aggie now. This upsets me very much.” “I worked in the campus library, and I also earned $0.40 per hour that was ap-

plied to my tuition. I majored in English and history. I got into campus leadership and became President of the Women’s Government Council and the dean of women came in my senior year and said she’d like me to apply for a fellowship to continue my education. I applied for and won a fellowship in Syracuse.” As she continued her education, Grissom was able to hone in on the direction she wanted her career to go. “By the time I made my way to Syracuse, I wanted to be an administrator. I wanted to work on women’s education outside of the classroom. I wanted women to be

first took the job at Trinity after Syracuse, the student handbook said “A campus woman never leaves campus without gloves, hose, and heels.” So one of the students walked down the stairs one night wearing only that. I knew I was in the right place. I had worn shorts to the campus. We stopped at a gas station to change into a dress so we could enter campus on my first day.” However, Grissom’s initial tenure at Trinity was brief. “I worked for a woman that was the epitome of what a woman in the 50s should be. Pearls, perfect hair, gloves. And I’m wearing shorts. It was a conflict, and didn’t work well. Three

This upsets me very much.” able to develop their leadership skills and to do something in addition to being wives and mothers.” Grissom, always one to challenge the status-quo, frequently clashed with the administration at Syracuse, and was unabashed about it. “I loved Syracuse. But there were some problems. I was a little casual and post-modern, and had real trouble that the women could not be on upper campus unless they were dressed up. Going to a tea-party was the highlight of one’s life. I didn’t like that. I thought it was unnatural and restrictive. It wasn’t right. Shorts had been invented, and I would literally run to my room so as to not be seen in my shorts, because they were not allowed. We knew times were changing, and if women were going to have opportunities in roles of leadership, they needed changes in the restrictiveness. So I set out to change that.” After Syracuse, Grissom found a job as the Head Resident and English Instructor at Trinity University in San Antonio. She was 24 years old, and quickly found that she would like Trinity University. “When I

and a half years later, and I left and said I’d never ever be back.” Grissom took a teaching assistantship in Austin at the University of Texas. Pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy in English, Grissom was going after the one thing that she had always wanted to do: teach and help women. As she neared graduation, Grissom took the phone call that would ultimately change her life. “I was looking all around and looking for where I want to go, and my phone rang and I basically sold out for money. The President for Trinity called at my apartment and said ‘Your previous boss is no longer here – we’d like you to come back as Associate Dean of Student Life. And you can teach English. We’ll pay you $6,000 per year’. I was astonished. I didn’t have to live in the dorms anymore. This was 2 years after I left Trinity. So I went back to Trinity in 1964, and I’ve never left.” Quickly moving up the ladder, Grissom relished her new environment and the caliber of students that Trinity University presented her with. “I became Dean of students, and then VP for Student Affairs.

“ One of the many joys of my life is introducing young adults to challenging, enriching fiction.” I was the first female Vice President at Trinity. I was fully tenured as professorship in 1975. In the academy of teaching, most people don’t pick a school and stay there forever. But Trinity is like a family to me. All my friendships, my close relationships, they all come from there. I’ve always taught one class in addition to my administrative work, but I’m currently teaching three. I have always loved the quality of people on that campus. The university has a covenant relationship with the church. Trinity always attracted really bright gifted students and staff. The trustees decided we would become a selective institution and that we would realize all students would have equal academic potential. And I believe that whole-heartedly. All my students are smart, I’m smart, and it’s so much nicer to teach students that are smart.” In talking with Grissom, it’s obvious where her passion comes from: the people. Teaching is a core passion for hers, but it pales in comparison to her unending fascination with the human race. The books seem to just be an extension of that. And are the vehicle that sparks the conversation. “Contemporary Literature is my favorite class to teach. I like the more mature students. They’re surer of themselves. It will not surprise you to know that I am weird. I have spent my life taking notes being given out in lectures and I hate it. So I tell all my students that it is up to you to develop your literature aesthetics, and most importantly, I make them think for themselves.” But she also feels bad for those same students. “It was harder to get in trouble in those older days. I’ve spent the better part of my life in higher education, and I tell kids all the time I don’t know how you do it. There are so many ways for kids to get in trouble now. I never had these influences or options as I was growing up. Heck, we didn’t let kids have cars at Trinity for a long time. We had curfews. Kids are also more concerned economically now. They question

everything. They have more distractions than any generation. I have rigidity about their writing, and won’t bend. Yes, I enjoy their curiosity, and how they question the rules, but I will not allow deviation from proper grammar. Make it simple, make it clear, and make it sound good. That’s how I teach grammar nowadays. If you get into the specifics of grammar rules, you’ll lose them. If you attack it from the three rules above, it’s simpler and they stay with you.” And that love and respect for literature is fierce and as unwavering as she is. “Good triumphs over evil. That’s why I love literature. You can read about errors in judgment, and in choices, and you can read about the mistakes other people make so you don’t make them. One of the many joys of my life is introducing young adults to challenging, enriching fiction. And if they don’t like it, that’s ok. But they have to convince me WHY they don’t like it.” Recently, Grissom published A Novel Approach to Life, a collection of her speeches that span more than 50 years. Comical, serious, and in her “pull no punches” way of talking, it’s vintage Colleen Grissom. However she’s not done writing. “I am celebrating my 78th birthday in January. I’m signed on to teach for this year. I’ve requested an academic leave for spring 2013. I’m going to research a 2nd book, a list of lists. It will be about the 10 things that I love the most. The 10 songs that are on my playlist. The 10 movies I want to see again. The 10 behaviors at a dinner party that I find disgusting.” One of the perks of her career with Trinity University was being able to live in school-provided housing. There was one problem, however, it was too big. “I called it THE MANSION. I was in the mansion 18 years. It was 5,000 square feet, and it was just me, two dogs, and one cat. I entertained all the time. I loved it, but it was just too big. I’ve always loved the hill country my whole life.

When I needed to get away, I came to the hill country. In 1998, I stopped at the Dairy Queen in Boerne. I saw an ad for Cordillera Ranch and headed out here. We drove in and I didn’t like it because they stopped me at the gate and told me I had to have a reason to be here; I couldn’t just drive around the neighborhood. I never could believe I could afford it. Tracy (Harris) showed me several lots, and I’ve been here ever since. I paid cash for that sucker. I made a list of 15 things I wanted for the house; a wraparound porch, a cedar post fence line, a door off my bedroom…stuff like that. I wanted a great room, high ceilings, and a walk-in shower. And I got everything I wanted, and moved in 1999.” Since, Grissom has been happy she moved. “I’ve never regretted moving to Cordillera Ranch one moment in my life. It is exceedingly professionally well-managed because there are many individuals that endeavor to create a great sense of community. Mostly, I love it because of the serenity of the area. It’s the sound of silence. I hear only my fountains bumbling, the dogs barking, and the sounds of nature. I love my purple martins. It’s the most beautiful place. It is just physically and spiritually beautiful.” Heavily involved in the community, both inside Cordillera Ranch and outside, Grissom continues to be active in both literature and teaching. Outside of her leave of absence in 2013, she has no plans to slow down. “I get asked to come to lots of events and if I don’t want to go I just say I’m too old and don’t like to drive at night, but seriously, that so rarely happens. The people are so incredible at Cordillera Ranch, and I love every aspect of the community. And as for work, it didn’t ever cross my mind that people didn’t love what they do for work. And this is one of my bigger blessings. I love it so very much. I’m 77 years old, and I can’t wait for the 1st day of class. And I know my students think I’m ancient, but I don’t care. I can’t wait for it, and I love it.”

“I love it because of the serenity of the area. It’s the sound of silence.”

Proper Site Design and Analysis By Damon Christofilis

When presented with the opportunity to write an informative piece for the inaugural “Builder’s Corner”, I was perplexed as to what one topic I might scribe about that could be of most benefit to current Cordillera Ranch property owners who are contemplating joining the ranks of new residents of our fabulous community. My brain started racing, just as it does when I step onto a Cordillera Ranch lot for the first time, and shortly it hit me: “Why not share years of knowledge and experience in designing and building great projects here in Cordillera Ranch over the past decade?” What follows are some of the early steps and secrets on what it takes to be successful in designing and planning a new home in Cordillera Ranch, so as to end up with a completed project that all parties who were involved can be proud of. If you follow some of the paths that those who have gone before you have laid out, hopefully you will be able to stand back in the end and say, “We were all good stewards to the God-given property we were blessed to have had the opportunity to work with.” Continued projects that result in these kinds of sentiments will only go towards enhancing our already beautiful community.

PRELIMINARY CLEARING/IDENTIFYING THE HOME SITE(S) The first steps in beginning the design process on a Cordillera Ranch property is to identify the potential home site(s) digest and analyze its various characteristics. The traits that you should be interested

in evaluating are: property and building setback lines, lot topography, existing trees, general orientation, current as well as future adjacent homes, sightlines and solunar paths and wind patterns. On a typical lot in the Clubs Village, the home site is well defined and easy to digest. However, on a two, four or 10 acre lot there are usually multiple options and considerations. In any case, if analysis of the lot is visually limited because of existing native vegetation, you should seek a logical, careful removal of the non-desirable species to

a point that the lot and potential home site(s) can be properly analyzed. Once a lot and site have been thoughtfully cleared or thinned out to a point that they can be better digested, it’s time to commission necessary tree and topographical survey. This survey ultimately provides the client and architect the empirical (to scale) dimensioned information on what the terrain of the lot is doing and where the key trees are located upon it, including the drip lines if necessary. This information is critical to ensure that your architect has all of the pertinent data he or she needs to consider before putting a pencil to paper in commencing the design of your future residence in Cordillera Ranch. SUCCESSFUL OVERALL SITE DESIGN Once a lot has been cleared for proper analysis and the tree and slope surveys have been received, it is now that you are ready to meet with a design professional and commence the architectural drawings of both the future homes as well as any adjacent elements that will be part of the overall project. The driveway, guest quarters, pool, water features, gates, fenc-

ing, etc. and any other future “hardscape” requirements should be anticipated at this point. Hardscape refers to the non-home elements which serve as the basis for the actual landscaping materials and plants to be worked into and around such as driveways, walks, creeks, boulder beds, etc.. It’s most important to determine the most desirable location and position for the house itself first, and then consider the best options for any additional pieces of the puzzle. By choosing the optimal location for the home, you allow the most important element to take its logical place, and then fit the complimentary pieces around it. Indeed, many times the desired location for a pool or a casita has helped assist in defining the general location of the home, but they rarely dictate exactly where the home should be placed. With careful and methodical planning; designing and creation of all elements; and harmoniously working each with the other, we can create an overall environment that you will be proud of and pleased with for years to come. As a resident of Cordillera Ranch for over 8 years, I am readily available to expound upon these concepts on your property in an effort to give you some ideas of the various facets of site planning and construction feasibility. I can be reached at my Cordillera Ranch Model Home office at 830-229-5176 at your convenience. All the Best, Damon Christofilis President Burdick & Christofilis Custom Homes

Cordillera Ranch

SIGNATURE VACATIONS

Our Cordillera Ranch Signature Vacation series is continuing to offer families an opportunity for adventurous travel. We’ll head to Vail, Colorado, the finest family ski and snowboard destination in the country in February for President’s Day Weekend. In the last edition of Cordillera Ranch Living, I wrote about passing along our Texas outdoor heritage to the next generation. In this edition, I’ll strongly recommend passing along a love for winter outdoor recreation. Although we don’t have access to snow and mountains in our backyard, a flight from San Antonio to Denver and short drive into the Rockies will create some wonderful memories for your family. Skiing and snowboarding are great sports for people of any age. It gets you

outside in the fresh air, burns calories and relieves stress. It’s something you can enjoy as an individual, in a group or with your family and friends. Our Signature Vacation trip will offer families from The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch a great way to spend time with your neighbors and friends in the premier ski and snowboard destination in Colorado. Skiing and snowboarding are fun activities. Or they can be fun, once right and left turns and stopping have been conquered. But there are other reasons to learn to ski and snowboard, and they include: Physical: Skiing and snowboarding improve muscle tone as well as improve balance and endurance. Health: Skiing and snowboarding provide an excellent cardiovascular

workout, which helps to strengthen the heart muscles. Social: Skiing and snowboarding bring families and friends together for one common purpose — to slide on snow. Vail is the largest ski mountain in the United States, and long regarded as one of the best. Vail has topped Ski Magazine’s annual poll 16 times in the last 23 years. Vail has some of the best ski and snowboard terrain in the world; a collection of peaks that harbors a seemingly endless series of vast bowls—5,289 acres of wide open slopes, most serviced by lifts, some reachable only on foot. SKIING VS. SNOWBOARDING One of the first questions always asked when planning a snow bound trip is “Do you ski or snowboard?” If you have never

tried either, then you must ask yourself what would provide the best experience for a first timer. Most experts will agree that skiing is easier to pick up for first timers compared to snowboarding. But this answer is also very subjective and it really depends on the person’s athletic ability. I personally started snowboarding 18 years ago and have not put on a pair of downhill skis since the mid 90’s. Or perhaps you’re an accomplished skier and you’ve decided to give snowboarding a go. I’ll attempt to break down the differences between the two sports so that you can make an informed decision and also be aware of how fast you can realistically expect to progress with your current skiing skills. Skiing and snowboarding are alike in that they are both downhill and are both the source of countless hours of fun and exhilaration. Some of the differences, however, that you’ll find between them include: Snowboard riders constantly have to sit or exert energy to remain on edge while they are stationary. Unlike skiing, you will not have poles to help you remain upright and standing when you are not moving. Snowboarding is a lot easier on the knees compared to skiing. Knee injuries are not as common in snowboarding as they are in skiing. Snowboarding can, however, be a lot more brutal on your wrists so make sure you wear some wrist guards. You’ll start to develop a deep hatred for flats when you’re starting out with the snowboard. Again, you won’t have your ski poles to bail you out. You will, however, begin to fall in love with deeper and softer snow. Snowboards work nicely in powder and crud while skis are better in bumps and ice. Getting up after a fall on a snowboard is a skill in itself but once mastered should prove to be easier and faster than having to put your stuff together again after falling on skis. If you’re just looking for speed, more speed and nothing but speed, you may be surprised to know that given a skier and boarder of equal ability, skiing beats snowboarding virtually each time in terms of velocity. Since this isn’t a science article, we can’t get into the physics involved which explain why skiing has an edge. Suffice to say that if you were to compare speed records for both skiers and boarders, the skiers will always be faster. So you’ve been skiing for several years and you’ve decided that it’s time for a change. Around the mountain you see people having the time of their lives on snowboards and your friends certainly think you should give it a go.

So, should you? Is it hard? Will all those years of skiing make it easier to learn? The answer is probably yes, to a certain extent. Apart from being familiar with the mountain environment and being comfortable with descending fast, as a skier you would also be familiar with the concepts of edging and carving. As with other beginners, you’d be best served with investing in some lessons or at least doing some reading to get an idea of the basic maneuvers involved with snowboarding. Expect to end up with a

done, with skiing. Don’t expect to be carving up those double black diamond runs like a pro in just a few days. VAIL – BEYOND THE SLOPES Let me close by saying that even if skiing or snowboarding are not up your alley, Vail offers something for everyone! Anyone can find plenty to do, from spas to shopping to snow tubing. Even if you ski bell to bell, you still have 18 hours to fill. No worries. Our Signature Vacation will offer an all-inclusive opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the Vail area!

sore backside and/or a mouth full of snow during the initial stages. Many skiers do, in fact, report to have progressed much further in their first few days of snowboarding than they did with skiing within a similar time frame back in their early days. This, of course, varies between individuals with some claiming that there is absolutely no difference in the amount of time it takes to become proficient in one or the other. You can, therefore, expect to reach the intermediate stage without too many hassles. Beyond that, however, you’ll have to put in the miles just as you do, or have

Realty

The #1 resource for Cordillera Ranch Real Estate Information.

DID YOU KNOW…. • Overall lot sales (Includes resales and developer lots in Cordillera Ranch) are up 15% in the 1st three quarters 2011 versus the same period a year ago. Developer lot sales are up 3x year over year through the third quarter. • Home sales volume is up 26% to $18.6MM through 3rd quarter 2011 versus $14.8MM through 3rd quarter 2010. This is attributable to an increase in the number of home sales (18 through 3Q 2011 versus 16 through 3Q 2010) as well as an increase in the average sales price ($1.04MM through 3Q 2011 versus $924k through 3Q 2010). • If you are considering buying or selling property in Cordillera Ranch, it’s very important to address membership questions with our Membership Director, Debbie Pepper, early on in the process so there are no surprises during contract period or after closing. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until it’s too late. • The Club membership transaction is wholly separate from the real estate transaction. • There is not a standard average cost per square foot in Cordillera Ranch that applies to every home. The sale price and building costs per square foot vary WIDELY depending on site features like views, trees, golf frontage, water frontage and acreage. Be sure to understand the differentiating factors when considering properties in Cordillera Ranch: no two properties are alike. Cordillera Ranch Realty is the expert on property in the community (and our sales stats prove it). Let one of our agents guide you through the process to give you the confidence you need in buying or selling property.
