“We ARE going to ENJOY Christmas this year!” That was a demand from my sister at the beginning of October! “We are going to order all the presents early and we are NOT going to be wrapping the day before Christmas. We’re going to bake cookies with the kids and we’re going to enjoy them and one another!” Ahhhhh! It’s as if I felt myself breath for a moment, and I felt as if a ton of weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I was “all in,” while having no idea how I’d climb the Mount Everest she’d just laid in front of me. I decided to hand catalogs to my kids to make it easier on myself. So far I have three catalogs with an average of four treasures circled on each page, courtesy of my seven year-old princess! November and December — how can these two months bring equal amounts of excitement and dread? We all know Thanksgiving and Christmas will be wonderful, but all the blood (well, maybe not), sweat (yes, we live in Texas) and tears (yep!) that lead up to these two holidays will ultimately bring us closer to those we love the most. Family! That’s what it’s all about, right? Strip everything else away and at the end of the day, if we have those we love around us, that is enough. If there was ever an example of a strong family unit, it’s our cover “tribe,” the Turturro family. You can’t go a week without seeing them around the neighborhood… together. Whether it be on the driving range, the pool or the patio of The Clubhouse, they are five people perfectly fit together in one very loving family. So let’s resolve that we ARE going to ENJOY the holidays… really enjoy them with our loved ones. I’m sure we’ve all wished “to be a kid again” at some point in adulthood. Here’s our chance! Approach the holiday season with joy, love, the baby Jesus and presents under the tree — just like a child would. I suppose the adult version might be a stomach full of turkey, a gift or two, a full heart, a solid nap and a certain football victory! I know it’s easier said than done, but really making the time to enjoy the holidays with each other, and finding HIM is the best way to enjoy the holidays. It’s the beginning of November and we’ve got two months to make the most of 2016. 2017 is certainly uncertain! But I AM certain we live in one of the best town’s in America and I KNOW we drive into a strong community each day. I pray for many, many blessings to you and yours this holiday season. The Turturro family or the “Turturro Tribe” as they see themselves, couldn’t wait to start enjoying the Cordillera Ranch lifestyle even before they made the move from Spring Branch. So while they joined The Club in 2009, it wasn’t until 2015 that they moved into their home. They credit their fellow members and friends Brian and Tobi Baize for introducing them to Cordillera Ranch. “The golf course was the initial draw. That and the Baize family. Once we started meeting other people, it was an easy decision,” says Philip Turturro. Location was important as well. “Our church is in Spring Branch and all our family is in Boerne so Cordillera Ranch was the perfect location to be close to everything.” Keeping family close was a priority. “When we built our home, we also built a Casita for Samantha’s mom, Debbie, to live,” says Philip Turturro. Both San Antonio natives and married for 14 years, Philip and wife Samantha began dating when they were just 16 and 15 years old respectively. “We met through my dad, oddly enough. He was her physical therapist when she broke her ankle playing volleyball in high school. My dad was her older sister’s professor at the University of Texas Health and Science Center and one thing led to another. Although Samantha attended the largest high school in San Antonio and I attended the smallest private school in Texas, God found a way for us to meet,” says Philip. Faith is integral in the Turturro’s lives. God’s guidance is most apparent in the formation of their family. Sons Tommy and Johnny, both six years old, and daughter Sophia, three years old, are adopted. “We met a couple when we were newly married that ran an international adoption organization. Their story convinced us that adoption was definitely something God was leading us into,” says Philip. Tommy, named after Philip’s father, was born in San Antonio on December 22 and came home joyously on Christmas Eve. A local Boerne doctor and his daughter found Johnny in a Haitian village when he was just three weeks old and in dire condition having not eaten in six days. They nursed him back to health and he went to an orphanage. Though they chose to adopt him before he was one year old, it required five years and five trips to Haiti before he came home. “God was good and faithful every step of the way.” Sophia was born prematurely in Colorado. After three weeks in Colorado, Samantha and Tommy brought her home the week of Thanks-
giving in 2013. “The way God knew exactly what child was right for us AND the perfect timing He showed in every case, is nothing short of a miracle,” says Philip. The fulfillment of being a mother resonates with gratitude for Samantha. “I LOVE everything about being a mother. For many, many years I prayed that God would grant me my prayer. My heart’s desire was to be a mommy. After years of waiting, God answered my prayer and then He chose to bless me (and Philip) two more times. Mothering is the most wonderfully and terrifyingly eye-opening blessing from God. God is refining me in ways that I did not know I needed. He has been with me every step of the way. I pray that my kiddos would love Him. I am so thankful for the husband I have and the incredibly different ways that HE brought my children to my husband and me. His fingerprints are all over these precious little lives.” It’s a belief the couple feel so strongly about that they cite a quote by Norma Scarlett on their correspondence, “No child is an accident, for every child is given to the mother God intended.” Their faith also guides their community support. “We are very involved in our church and a ministry in San Antonio called SAHeals, a faith-based, non-profit. I also volunteer at the Kendall County Jail. I’ve been doing so for ten years. I teach Bible study for the inmates on Tuesday nights. Obviously, adoption has been a big part in our life. We are so incredibly thankful for how God has built our family. As adoptive parents, we have been down a long road and there have been

a lot of highs and lows on this journey. We’ve supported a number of adoption agencies and orphanages overseas.” Philip’s career has always been in the mobile home industry and is the General Manager for Titan Factory Direct with 11 locations in Texas and Oklahoma. Samantha, who was a realtor and still keeps her license active, has a teaching degree, and an L1 coaching certification and coaches CrossFit in Boerne. The boys attend a classical Christian university model school. Samantha says, “The classical Christian approach is a fantastic model that teaches children the ‘old school’ way.” Samantha shares the model’s three basic stages of learning: 1. Grammar (grades K-5), focuses on memorization and teaching as much foundational information as possible. It is absolutely amazing the information that children can retain. 2. Logic (grades 6-8), focuses mostly on the inquisitive side of children. At this phase of life, kids are asking lots of “how” and “why” questions. This teaching method is designed to nurture their forming minds to better reason and discern truth. 3. Rhetoric (grades 9-12), focuses on the idea that highschool students love to talk. So in this stage, it is all about teaching them how to present their beliefs and ideas well and persuasively.

While the building blocks are essential, it’s the university model aspect that thrills Samantha. “That is the super fun part for me. I graduated from UTSA with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Our boys go to school two days a week at the actual school. Then two days a week, I am given the curriculum by the school teachers and I get to teach the boys at home. The lessons are already planned out for the entire year; I just get to co-teach. Our school is only a four-day week. A fifth day is optional through grammar school. We have chosen for the boys to take a music theory/choir class on Fridays.” Teaching at home has required some unique adjustments. “We do have a school-room set up in our home. We converted the spare room. This whole set-up is fantastic for us. I love being a part of the ‘lightbulb’ moments... those moments when it clicks for them. It is super fun! Our motto is ‘Learning with Laughter.’ They get so excited and I get, maybe, even more excited for them.” The experience has given Samantha an appreciation for the education process. “Our boys learn very differently. One is very math minded (like me) and can easily visualize information, where the other is much more artistic (not my strong suit). I continue to be grateful and amazed at the teachers who
day-in-and-day-out have to figure out ways to teach 20-30 kids, five days a week!” She adds, “I also love that through all of our teaching and learning at home, I get to point them back to God. It is such a blessing.” The couple, who remain best friends, make time together a priority maintaining a regular date night, going out for dinner and live music and traveling to favorite destinations like Italy and Maui. They also enjoy college football. “We love the Florida Gators and are huge college football fans. We travel to games every year. We have had a Gator/media room in our last few houses and it’s where we enjoy game day,” says Philip. Their extreme Gator devotion led them to name their one-yearold reverse brindle boxer, Albert, after the University of Florida’s mascot. The striking pet has very rare, dark markings that make him look black. “He is a very sweet dog who loves our children as much as they love him. He is gentle and enjoys bounding around our backyard with the boys,” says Samantha. There are obviously many aspects of living in Cordillera Ranch that the Turturros enjoy. They couldn’t wait to become members! “Our favorite part of living at Cordillera Ranch is golfing
with the family or golfing on a Friday afternoon with the fellas,” says Philip, an avid golfer who enjoys traveling on golf trips. In fact, he says the golf course is something between a passion and obsession. “Our boys both love to golf and love playing flag football. Sophia is the boy’s shadow. She adores them and wants to be wherever they are. Sophia already has clubs and goes to the range with the boys.” Add kayaking on the river, taking walks on the nature trails and taking the kids to the see the horses at the Equestrian Center, and they have covered almost all of the amenities. “We’ve made great friends and love the family atmosphere at The Club and pool.” Ultimately, home is where their hearts are. Philip says, “We absolutely love our four acres and eating dinner on the back patio or poolside in the summer. We feel like the only people on the planet living on a huge ranch. It’s very special. We never know what God’s plans are, but we hope to never leave Cordillera Ranch. This is home and we hope it’s home forever. I want to teach my grandchildren how to play golf at the same place I taught my kids.”

I don’t believe I could narrow it down to one thing, but if I had to it would be the members. They have been extremely accepting and welcoming. What has been your greatest challenge in your business? It is probably the slow times. We sometimes go a few days without members enjoying the outdoor recreation amenities on the ranch and I often wonder, “What are all these people doing instead of enjoying the great outdoors with us?” What has been your most rewarding experience in your business? Getting to show people the rivers and woods; teaching people how to do something I love and watching them grow to love the outdoors as well. What is your favorite aspect of working/living in the Hill Country? I love that you can round any corner and find a small fishing hole or see an

amazing amount of grazing deer. The people here are great as well. What are your hobbies/interests? Fly fishing, hunting, kayaking; anything outdoors. What’s your favorite sport? Golf Favorite sporting event you’ve attended? Colonial PGA event in Ft. Worth
Favorite quote? “Live a life you don’t need a vacation from.” Favorite movie and why? Almost Heroes. Chris Farley was one of the funniest people alive during this movie. You’ll just have to watch it. The Hill Country contains some of the
most picturesque landscapes in Texas. It also happens to be the home of
some of the most impressive county courthouses in the state.
For most of its history Texas was a poor, rural state. Its population lived primarily on farms and ranches that were widely dispersed throughout its vast area. Early county courthouses represented an opportunity for a community to demonstrate its economic viability as well as its dedication to the rule of law. Communities would come together and invest vast amounts of time, money and effort to build a courthouse that was often the largest and most substantial building in the county. These buildings were not a reflection of current conditions but instead were built as aspirational buildings to demonstrate to the world the future the community wanted to have. As Texas became a wealthy economic powerhouse over the course of the twentieth century, that fiction became a reality. During the late 1800s to the early twentieth century when Central Texas courthouses were constructed, the area transitioned from a mostly untamed wilderness of 820,000 residents to a booming modern business center with a population of over 11 million — today that number is over 26 million. When the Kendall County Courthouse opened in 1870, Comanche war parties were still a threat. Courthouses did not end this threat but they did establish order and a civil society. The county courthouses of the Hill Country are compelling in part because they are so profoundly optimistic. They speak to a government that is approachable, a society that is progressive and a future that is bright. Although each courthouse tells a great deal about a specific place at a specific time, when looked at chronologically they together tell the story of how courthouse design developed in Texas over the course of seventy years.

KENDALL COUNTY COURTHOUSE –
The Kendall County Courthouse is the oldest existing county courthouse in central Texas. Although counties would often tear down older structures and rebuild them in the same location, in Boerne they simply kept adding onto their original building. An initial single-story stone structure was built in 1870, a second story was added in 1886 and a more ornate front façade was added in 1910. An annex was built across the street in 1998 that now houses most of the county’s functions.

BANDERA COUNTY COURTHOUSE –
With its blocky central building topped by a tall tower, the Bandera County Courthouse represents an archetypal design from the “golden age” of courthouse design. In addition to acting as vertical landmarks, clocks would often be placed on the faces of these towers to communicate time to the surrounding area. But this was not quite the case in Bandera: the county could not afford to pay for a clock mechanism and so it merely painted a “fake” clock face onto its tower. That remains the case today.

Rather than locating the courthouse in the middle of a public square, in Bexar County the courthouse faces a public plaza. This urban strategy reflects the Hispanic origins of San Antonio. As a result, the Bexar County Courthouse has a main façade that addresses the plaza as opposed to most other courthouses that have four essentially equal facades. This condition has allowed the Bexar County Courthouse to be enlarged over time: it has incrementally expanded to the south without significantly changing its appearance.

James Riely Gordon was one of the most prolific courthouse architects in Texas. Over the course of the eighteen courthouses he built for counties throughout the state, he developed a unique design that featured a cross-shaped plan that located the building’s entrances at the inside corners where the four short wings intersect. This basic design could be enlarged and embellished depending on the size and budget of the county. The Comal County Courthouse is a good example of a strippeddown version of this design.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, courthouse designs started moving away from the elaborate Victorian styles of the late 1800s and began embracing more classical approaches to design. Domes replaced towers and columned porticos framed formal entrances. The Hays County Courthouse also represents an example of a design that attempts to create interior spaces that are just as monumental as its exterior appearance. This courthouse features a dramatic rotunda that opens up to its central copper dome.

When a county was established it would designate a town to act as the county seat. But sometimes nearby towns would grow faster in population and call for an election to move the county seat to their town. This is what happened in Blanco County. Although a perfectly respectable courthouse was built in the town of Blanco in 1885, the seat was moved to Johnson City in 1890. The 1916 courthouse that exists there today features a short tower with a small dome on top that was popular of the time.

As the twentieth century progressed, county governments became less central to the lives of individual Texans as the role of city and state governments increased. As a result, county courthouses started to become less grandiose. The Kerr County Courthouse has Beaux-Arts detailing, but it features neither a dramatic dome nor a monumental tower. Like the Bexar County Courthouse, a large expansion was built behind the original building so as to maintain the appearance of its main façade.

GILLESPIE COUNTY COURTHOUSE –
The Great Depression was hard on Texas but funds made available by federal assistance programs such as the Public Works Administration did help pay for the construction of some nice courthouses. The modernistic design of the current Gillespie County Courthouse is similar to other courthouses built at the time. It features abstracted classical details and massing that made use of traditional materials such as brick and limestone. The earlier 1882 courthouse sits next to it and currently functions as the Gillespie County Library. Brantley Hightower is an architect in San Antonio and the founder of HiWorks. His book, “The Courthouses of Central Texas,” was published by the University of Texas Press in 2015.

Courthouses continued: As stately and dignified as courthouses are year round, they take on a special elegance at the holidays, when courthouse lighting ceremonies are central to kicking off the season from late November through New Year’s Day. Whether the treasured buildings are adorned in simple white lights that highlight their unique architecture or are transformed into brilliant extravaganzas, historic courthouses serve as natural holiday centerpieces for the communities that delight in the annual tradition. Crowds gather in town squares for seasonal music, holiday refreshments, shopping for arts and crafts, and the requisite visit from Santa. This year, the Comal County Courthouse in historic downtown New Braunfels is part of the annual Downtown Lighting Ceremony (November 18). In Kerrville, the Kerr County Courthouse Lighting Ceremony is the finale to the Holiday Lighted Parade (November 19). The grandaddy of all courthouse lighting ceremonies is the Blanco County Courthouse in Johnson City, where more than 100,000 lights illuminate the courthouse and the surrounding grounds (November 25). Organizers emphasize that no nails or screws are used to hang the lights and no damage is caused to the iconic structure.

Congratulations to Team USA and Cordillera Ranch member Jimmy Walker on their victory over Team Europe last month at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.
Team USA won 17-11 for only the second time in the last 8 matches. I was fortunate enough to attend for the first time and it was an incredible experience. There were a few keys to victory this year and it all started by getting the players and the PGA of America together as a task force was formed which led to a greater bond amongst the players. Captain Davis Love III did a fantastic job in putting the players in a position to win. The golf course set-up favored the Americans as birdies were abundant throughout the competition which got the fans even more involved. The golf was quite possibly some of the best golf I have ever witnessed over three days and the Sunday Singles matches provided some of the best drama we have ever seen. There were so many great matches but Patrick Reed vs Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson vs Sergio Garcia were the two matches that really stood out. Reed defeated McIlroy 1 up in an incredibly passionate and emotion-filled match, and Mickelson halved Garcia as the two made 19 birdies amongst them. Both were pivotal to the US bringing back the Cup! Finally, one of the things that stood out to me was the number of people that dressed up in absolutely crazy, patriotic colors to support their side. It was quite the sight and made for a fun event! MEMBER-GUEST RECAP What an incredible finish to the C-Star Member-Guest tournament in October! Charlie Hill and his guest from Oak Hills, Michael Sedlak, captured the championship this year with a stunning Shoot-Out victory. They defeated Larry Harper and his guest from The Dominion, Jesse Guerra, on the last hole when Michael hit a great chip from the front of the green to ensure their par, and Larry and Jesse were not able to navigate a two-putt from long distance. We had the usual drama throughout the Shoot-Out as this particular format lends itself to a ton of excitement and fun for all of the teams participating as well as the spectators! Desserts are a wonderful creation; one that completes an experience like the icing on a cake. A sweet ending at the end of a perfect savory meal brings you full circle in an extraordinary culinary experience, and has you leaving with a smile on your face. My joy comes from being able to provide that smile of joy and feeling of bliss before going home. Better yet, creating a special order cake allows me to send someone home with a sweet treat to enjoy with family and friends — and that means more smiles and joy for everyone. Cakes take my personal joy to a whole new level of sugar high. Creating a special cake gives me the opportunity to contribute to someone’s most precious memories with the simplest of ingredients — butter, sugar, flour and eggs. Despite seeming modest with common, everyday ingredients, cakes can be tedious and intricate in their details, and it is in this process that my happiness is found. The cake… moist, soft, airy and delicious. Under mix the batter and it will be lumpy; over mix and it will have air tunnels. The oven shouldn’t be too hot or it will create a crust with a gooey inside. And most importantly, don’t dare disturb

the oven or the cake may seem to rise beautifully but in one awful and saddening instant deflate and sink with no hopes of having that airy appeal. This moist, melt-inyour-mouth quality is so simple to attain, but one of the best “secret” ingredients that just about no one would guess. The icing… creamy, velvety, smooth and lusciously sweet. This is literally the glue of the cake. It holds everything together and creates a blank canvas to begin any masterpiece. Icing is the simplest component of the cake as it is only three ingredients in its most basic form. However, simple as it may sound, it is all in the balance and proportion of ingredients, the technique and

If you can master making the perfect homemade icing, you can turn any box cake into a delicious dessert by slathering on an amazing buttercream. The vision… this is where the details of intricate designs come from. The piping, fondant, gum paste, flowers and figures are techniques that require training, precision and practice, in addition to creativity. I never considered myself a creative or
artistic person growing up until I found cakes. I discovered my comfort with icing cakes during Mr. Sweeney’s high school geography class. At the end of every unit, we celebrated with a “Culture Day,” which required each student to bring something to class that represented a country from that region. For every Culture Day, I brought a cake with a country’s flag piped on top of a 9x13 cake — to scale and never missing a detail. Every classmate looked forward to
my creations and that was a great feeling of satisfaction. This glimpse of what it was like to share in sweet memories ignited a deeper passion within me. Special occasion cakes have become a unique part of my career. WINTER IN THE HILL COUNTRY
GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY! By Shane Reynolds
With the often mild winters we see in the Kendall County area, there’s plenty of time to remain active in and around Cordillera Ranch, either hunting, fishing or camping.
HUNTING
Hunting is the most popular winter outdoor activity, but there are many other options. If you’re not a hunter, but you’re a gun and shooting enthusiast, then you should definitely try the sporting clays course, wobble trap, 5-stand and flush at the Gun Club, or come out and shoot at our hand gun or archery range. The Gun Club is located on the far west end of the ranch in a beautiful Texas Hill Country setting. If you are interested in an upland bird or deer hunt, we have a great relationship with our friends at Joshua Creek Ranch. Only 30 minutes from Cordillera Ranch, Joshua Creek Ranch occupies a uniquely diverse terrain including miles of Joshua Creek and Guadalupe River bottomland planted in fields of grain crops for prime pheasant hunting habitat; borders of limestone bluffs that rise to oak and elm studded pastures lush with prairie grasses providing perfect quail hunting cover; and densely wooded areas conducive to Texas deer hunting, both Whitetail and Axis. You’ll call it paradise when you experience the combination of this pristine hunt country with the outstanding cuisine and up-scale lodging accommodations at Joshua Creek Ranch.
FISHING
If shooting is not something you enjoy, consider some local trout fishing. Many people do not realize we have an outstanding trout fishery only 34 miles from the Clubhouse at Cordillera Ranch. When Canyon Lake was impounded in 1966, the cold water released from the bottom of the lake created an ideal environment
for trout. San Antonian Harry Jersig was president of the Lone Star Brewing Company and also a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department commissioner, and at his behest the brewery financed a three-year stocking program in the Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam. Although its proximity to Jersig’s home may have had something to do with the choice of location, the main reason lay in the way Canyon Dam was constructed. Many dams use floodgates located at the top of the dam to release water. Canyon Dam is different — it releases water from near the bottom of the lake. Water from this deep level is cold and rainbow trout, which are native to frigid mountain streams in western North America, thrive in cold water. The Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam normally remains below 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round for up to 10 miles below the dam, allowing rainbows to survive most of the year. Fast forward to the present day and now the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Guadalupe River Chapter of Trout Unlimited (GRTU) lead the charge on stocking. The state stocks trout during the winter (five sites from Canyon Dam downstream to Camp Hueco Springs), and anglers can now
enjoy the serenity of fishing for trout on cold winter days. Although the stocking sites are popular, many fly-fishing enthusiasts instead seek a restricted 9.5-mile stretch of the river. That area is defined in the TPWD’s Outdoor Annual as being from the second bridge crossing on River Road in Comal County upstream to the easternmost bridge crossing on FM 306.
In addition to the trout stocked by TPWD, trophy-sized trout stocked by the GRTU lurk there and may be kept only if caught on artificial lures or flies. GRTU began providing lease access points for its members in the late ’80s, and there are now roughly 17 such access points. GRTU annually stocks approximately 12,000 pounds of rainbows up to 18 inches in length at six to nine different sites. An agreement was negotiated between GRTU and the GuadalupeBlanco River Authority that helps provide a minimum flow from the dam during the warm weather to maintain a temperature in which trout can survive. If you are not experienced with trout fishing or fly casting, I encourage to contact Colt Dorr with our Outdoor Recreation program. He enjoys introducing others to the art of fly fishing and we have equipment as well. There’s a lot to learn about trout and trout fishing, and it often seems bewildering to a beginner. A free event in February near the river may help unveil some of the mystery, though. It’s an expo of trout fishing lore called TroutFest, and is presented by GRTU with valued assistance from TPWD staff. Colt will be taking a group of our Club members to this event and you will see us advertise the program as we get closer to the date. Other rivers and lakes in the area, including the San Marcos, Frio, Nueces and Sabinal River near Bandera, are great as well during mild winter days for warm water species. We’ll also be offering some outings to the coast during the winter months in search of speckled trout and redfish. BISD TRUSTEES LOOK TO THE FUTURE WITH ANTICIPATED LAND ACQUISITION
The Boerne Independent School District’s third middle school is one step closer to reality with the approval of the purchase of a 142-acre tract of land at the eastern edge of the district, the proposed site of the new school. Located southeast of the intersection of Highway 46 East and Farm Road 3351, with access off Highway 46, the contract price for the property is just under $3.7 million, roughly $26,000 per acre. BISD’s planned third middle school is part of the $175 million bond package overwhelmingly approved by voters in May of this year. The school will join two new elementary schools also part of the package, along with district-wide expansions and improvements to existing schools and facilities. Calling the approval of the land acquisition a “very forward-thinking move on the part of our board,” Superintendent David Stelmazewski points out that the site doesn’t just serve the district as the home of its next middle school. “It also offers us flexibility 10 years or more into the future

when the district grows to the point of considering a third high school.” BISD has to stay focused on the future, as explosive growth in the area requires that supply stay at least one step ahead of the demand. That demand comes in the form of district enrollment, which continues to climb steadily. The district closed the 2015-2016 school year with more than 7,800 students. Although the official 20162017 figures have not yet been recorded by the state, current enrollment was just over 8,200 after the first week of school. BISD enrollment projections are going in only one direction: up. Within the next five years, the number is expected to reach 9,800 students, and by school year 2025-2026 the district is looking at more than 12,300 enrollment. Not surprisingly, BISD is among the 76 rapid growth school districts out of the state’s 1,100 districts. Known as a “destination district” because of its outstanding record of high academic standards, the award-winning BISD offers everything from the basics to gifted and talented programs, career and techni-
cal training, arts programs, top organized sports teams and the latest in technology. As an example, the new $20.8 million 90,000-square foot Fabra Elementary at Johns Road and Lattimore — a prototype for BISD schools to come — opened this August, part of a previous bond election in 2013. Voters in Boerne, Fair Oaks and surrounding neighborhoods have historically placed great value on public education, approving record levels of bond funding in the past two elections. Meanwhile, the district must complete its due diligence process before this newest land transaction can be completed, but Stelmazewski is optimistic about what the third middle school will mean both for much-needed relief and the district’s legacy. “This site will help relieve some of the congestion and transportation challenges we face with our current school configuration and help us serve our students and families better,” he says. “Just as previous school boards are to be commended for purchasing the tract on Dietz-Elkhorn that is to be the site of our sixth elementary school, this school board will be remembered for its foresight someday when the doors open on new school facilities on this beautiful site.” CONSTRUCTION OF THREE NEW SCHOOLS:

If you’ve been in or out the Highway 46 entry on Cordillera Trace in the past couple of months, you’ve probably noticed the sitework underway on the west side of the road between the two gates. After a couple of years of planning, the new Cordillera Ranch Vista Office is under construction. The approximately 10,000-square-foot office development will be the new home for the Cordillera Ranch Visitor Center, DH Investments, Pasadera Builders and the Cordillera Ranch POA administrative office. The new offices, set for completion in the third quarter of 2017, will replace the original offices for these various operations that have been in place for 15+ years up on Cordillera Ridge. The new office will offer spectacular panoramic views
across the community and the Guadalupe River, similar to the existing hilltop location. Jim Terrian of J. Terrian Designs successfully implemented the vision of designing a functional office environment inside blended with a Hill Country Transitional residential-looking exterior. The concept renderings offer a 3-D view of the office. So the next question most people ask is, “What are you doing with the current offices?” The plans for the Cordillera Ridge hilltop are in progress and will include an exclusive gated enclave of homesites to be offered in 2017.
