W

We find ourselves at a point in American history where mainstream media, politicians and general societal forces are polarizing our country. It’s become more of a symbolic debate propagated by special interests and ultimately comes back to what gets politicians elected. The debates over higher versus lower taxes and increases versus cuts in social and government programs are symbolic from the standpoint of: you either have a fundamental belief that government should force you to give it more of your money or whether government should step back and let free markets create the balance and let successful enterprise philanthropically – and voluntarily – give back to society. At the core it’s about the freedom to choose how your dollars are reinvested in society and public programs. The fact remains that the U.S. is the most giving nation in the world, by a long shot. It’s no coincidence that it takes 14 Italian citizens to equal the charitable giving of one American citizen: Italy is well-known for its high taxation and public spending coupled with limited economic freedoms. No, I’m not venturing into that political debate here; it’s not the forum and frankly one page would not suffice. However, the unplanned common thread in this issue is the belief in giving back voluntarily. Take a look at our cover feature Phil Pfeiffer and his life-long commitment to civic charitable activities. It was his dedication to serving community organizations and public research institutes that helped create a culture of giving in the San Antonio office of Fulbright and Jaworski. This theme of community giving carries through in the Cancer Center Council story by Mary Ballenger Brook and Pam Burdick. The work that they, along with Dr. Thompson at the CTRC, are doing for Cancer research provides a harsh reminder of the need for private support in public issues. Finally, the Education section featuring the Boerne Education Foundation shows exactly how private giving helps local kids. I attended the signature BEF Rock on Fiesta fundraiser recently, and it’s great to see specifically how some of the $170,000 raised at this top-shelf event was used at each of the Boerne ISD schools. So in the era where attacking entrepreneurship and financial gain is a trendy means of politically-driven class warfare, this issue of Cordillera Ranch Living delivers a refreshing reminder of the philanthropic surplus provided to our society by so many successful business people. In the fitting words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Enjoy the read and welcome to Fall in the Texas Hill Country!

OLYMPICS

O LY M P I C

UPDATE

The May/June 2012 Cordillera Ranch Living featured Olympic coach, Rose Monday, and one of her top athletes, Maggie Vessey. Poised to go to the Olympic Trials, Maggie and Rose were upbeat and ready to take on the world in the middle distance running competitions. Years of preparation and hard work had gotten them this far, and their goals were high. Sometimes life just does not work out as you plan – and expect. In spite of the fact that Maggie had been routinely beating much of her competition in events leading up to the trials, it “just didn’t feel right” for her the day of the Olympic Trials Final and when your body doesn’t feel right sometimes it just doesn’t perform. Although she was disappointed to not make the Olympics, Maggie got right back to racing. Her drive is undeterred and her coach, Rose, left soon thereafter for the London Olympic Games with the rest of the team. We caught up with Rose a few moments before she left for the Games: CRL: Rose, the most obvious question is: What happened? Rose: There’s a lot of pressure with the Olympic Games and the Trials. The Trials are probably more difficult than the actual Games because we put such a focus on the Games. It can be overwhelming. The world championships are actually more competitive, but the Games get such a premium on them, and it scares so many of the athletes. So, the answer is that she just had a bad day. And it was just the worst day for it to happen. She knew she was ready to go and she just had a rough day at the office. CRL: How is Maggie holding up? Rose: She’s hurting a lot, but she jumped on a plane for another race and got back after it. She’s not done, though. Her contract with New Balance runs for another year, and they might renew that based on how she’s doing. Many of the athletes are still older than she is, and she has a lot of running left in her. The Games are every four years, but if you don’t make the games, it’s still an amazing experience. While it might feel like the end of the world, she knows that she’s still got some great chances. She has the talent to do it, and she has the resources to do it, and so she’s equipped and ready to move on. CRL: What do you think caused her to not place where she wanted to be? Rose: She just wasn’t able to execute the race plan, but she ran as hard as she could. She just didn’t feel right. A lot of running is mental, and when things get in the way, it can really throw you off your pace. CRL: There were a lot of folks disappointed for Maggie and were really cheering the two of you on. Any words to those of us back home? Rose: Yes, I am so thankful for the support and prayers from everyone back home. Everybody felt so connected to her and she was so appreciative for it, also. All of the well wishes and excitement was just wonderful and we enjoyed every minute of it. CRL: But you’re still going to the Games with the USA Track and Field team – how excited are you? Rose: I leave Sunday for London, and we have an amazing team. Our goal is 30 medals, and I think we can do it. And all the other athletes are so excited to go, but they are all missing Maggie so much and are being so supportive of her. Shortly before Rose left for London, she sent a brief text message to me. Right after missing qualifying for the Games, Maggie left for another race; a race where she would be racing against the athletes that had made the team ahead of her. Rose’s text: “Maggie won her race. She beat many of the athletes that made the US Olympic team.”

Golf GOLF

One of the most enjoyable things I do as the Director of Golf here at Cordillera Ranch is traveling with some of our members to play and experience some of the best golf courses in the world. This year is no exception as I will be joining 15 members and guests on a trip to Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI. September 10-14. We are looking forward to playing all four of the great courses, including the Blackwolf Run course which recently hosted the U.S. Women’s Open for the second time and the incredible Straits Course which hosted the 2010 PGA Championship and will be the host site of the 2020 Ryder Cup. Before arriving in Kohler, we first will be playing Erin Hills which will be hosting the 2017 U.S. Open. On top of the incredible golf itinerary for this trip, we have something else planned that just really put this trip over the top. The Green Bay Packers are playing the Chicago Bears in an NFL Thursday night prime time game that the group will be attending. Experiencing a game at Lambeau Field has been on the Bucket List for many of our members so having the opportunity to do this is quite exciting. These trips are a wonderful way for me to spend quality time with our members and can be a great bonding experience. September marks the return of a busy tournament schedule here at the Club. Both the Men’s Senior Club Championship and Ladies Club Championship take place this month. These events have continued to grow in popularity as they are a great way to test your skill as well as a chance to meet some different players that may not be part of your regular group. Both Gross and Net prizes are awarded. Jarratt Jones is the defending champion in the Men’s Senior and has won the event all five times it has been played. Marilyn McGaw played great golf last year to win her third LCC. The 7th Annual C-Star Member-Guest takes place October 18-20 this year and is the highlight event at the Club each year. Last year we introduced an opening night Putting Party that was a huge hit and we look to build on that again this year. The format will once again be the five 9-hole matches that allow for great camaraderie for everyone playing. Lance Welch and his guest Tim Ping are the defending champions. I hope you will consider playing as there is no better way to showcase the Club and community lifestyle. As Summer comes to a close, I look back and am very thankful for the timely rains and somewhat mild weather we had the past few months. The golf course is in fantastic shape so please come out and enjoy our spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. See you on the course, Marc DeWall, PGA Director of Golf, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch mdewall@cordilleraranch.com | 830.336.4653

FEATURE

You know there is something special about a golf club when PGA tour players are using it without getting paid to do so. The new Taylor Made Rocketbalz changed the expectations of fairways woods forever. Players are reported to have an increase distance up to 30 yards. There are even certain players who can hit it farther than their driver. What makes it different than other fairway woods? The new Rocketbalz has a speed pocket behind the face of the golf club. The speed pocket creates a trampoline effect which increase ball speed, increase launch angle while reducing spin, the recipe for ultimate distance. Its matte-white finish and larger head are easier to aim and hit. They come with various loft options for both men and ladies. Stop by the Golf Shop and give it a try to find out what everyone is talking about.

Phil and Diane Pfeiffer’s quest for more family time enabled them to focus not only on their own family, but to invest substantial energies into improving the lives of countless families throughout our area. From the sleepy town of La Porte, Texas, Phil Pfeiffer learned early on the value of community involvement as well as a strong work ethic. With six siblings, and a father that was the mayor of La Porte for almost 20 years, Phil quickly saw what it took to become successful not only in business, but in life. Phil begins, “My dad was an electrical contractor. He was a second generation contractor, but started his own company in 1962 in La Porte. He sold the company to my brother and his sons, where it was eventually sold, but continues as Pfeiffer and Sons.” Watching his father run the family business, Phil saw the value of earning a dollar, and he bounced between jobs as a electrician’s helper, a deck hand on a yacht, and even a bowling alley janitor. While he earned spending money working the odd jobs, he also quickly gravitated toward leadership roles throughout high school, eventually becoming President of the Texas State Association of Student Councils. “Everybody told me I should be a lawyer. Throughout high school I was involved in leadership roles and people thought that these roles were consistent with being a lawyer, so I figured that was as good a plan as any. When my older brother and I started college, we were the first in our family to do so.” Phil continues, “I graduated high school in ’65, and like most kids I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to

do, and I figured I’d just keep my options open. Sam Houston State offered me a scholarship in physics. It was a one year scholarship, and I knew that I was looking toward law school and I knew that physics wasn’t going to help with that unless I went with patent law, so I ended up majoring in History and Political Science.” Phil laughs, “It was vitally important to me that I did not have a lab every afternoon.” Throughout high school, and continuing into college, Phil and Diane had an “on-again, off-again” relationship. As they progressed through college, they fell out of touch with one another and didn’t reconnect for three years. Diane explains, “We ran into each other at a movie theatre in Houston. It was right before spring break of his senior year. We re-connected, and we were married 18 months later.” She continues, “I guess one of the things that I liked the most was that our families knew each other, our values were the same, and I loved that. He also had this

32 | September/october 2012

great career path, and I always knew he would be a wonderful father. My prediction on both counts came true.” Phil adds, “I was always chasing her. I had always hoped to see her again, and she’s a beautiful woman! I had had strong feelings for her for a long time.” Phil was the President of the Student Body his senior year at Sam Houston State, and was accepted into the Law program at both the University of Texas, as well as the University of Houston. “I decided that I was going to attend U of H because I could work part time. However, SMU had a Sumner’s Foundation scholarship that was for students in Texas or adjoining states who performed well academically, but had also been involved in community in some fashion. Luckily, I was awarded that in ‘69.” As part of his scholarship, the Pfeiffers had to take a brief detour. In order to attend law school he had to attend a ROTC program in Arlington for two years, while Diane taught

the 3rd grade. Pfeiffer graduated his law program as #2 in his class in 1972, and was quickly snatched up by Fulbright & Jaworski, which was one of the three largest law firms in Texas. “I initially wanted to specialize in maritime law. Coming from La Porte, I enjoyed the water and boats and thought I would enjoy a practice centered around that. However, when I showed up, an associate had just begun a specialization in that, so I was recruited to work in the labor and employment field and have enjoyed it. I focus on civil litigation with an emphasis on representing employers in labor disputes. The number one thing I like about my practice is the opportunity to work with outstanding companies that have as part of their mission not only treating their employees fairly but making their employees an integral part in the organization. Much of what I’ve done over the years is help those companies advance those objectives and defend them when somebody accuses

them of violating policies. These companies are trying to do the right thing and I’ve enjoyed working with them.” And true to form, Phil dove into his work with passion. “I made partner in ’79. My son and daughter were five and seven, and my hours were brutally long. I’d leave before they got up and would be home well past bedtime. I was doing work for a number of companies in south and central Texas. I noticed how much of my family’s life I was missing, and knew that it wasn’t the way I wanted things to be long term.” After Diane and Phil discussed the situation, he submitted a report with reasons for opening an office in San Antonio and why he should be chosen to open and run it. Fulbright & Jaworski had just selected a new managing partner. The day after Phil had submitted his proposal, he was given a confident “YES” to the San Antonio branch; with that, Fulbright & Jaworski’s new branch was opened in the 1st quarter of 1980.

The quality of people that live here is absolutely amazing. They are just the icing on the cake. Initially, Diane had some reservations. “I had been to San Antonio when Phil was in the Army. I wasn’t too pleased with the move, though. We were very centered in our life and were plugged in. I respected Phil’s opinion, and the ages of the kids made it rather easy. It took me about six months to get used to it. We got plugged into a tennis group, made some great friends, and we all warmed up to it pretty quickly. I eventually fell in love with the area. It’s a big city, but it has a very small town feel.”

While the family was acclimating, Phil was throwing his energies towards starting a new office and law practice virtually from scratch, which at the time was a brand new venture for the firm. “It was awfully difficult with the onset,” Phil says, “we were the outsiders. We were a large law firm, and were seen as interlopers. We focused on growing the practice, and started expanding into other practice areas. The firm also acquired a boutique public finance firm out of Dallas that helped us grow even more. They happened to have a partner here in San Antonio, so that helped us get a firmer foundation locally.” As Phil focused his energies on a prospering law office that eventually grew into one of the largest and most well respected law firms in San Antonio and south Texas, he also began to give back to the community. Phil explains, “When we first started our office here in San Antonio, we were the new kids in town – we needed to contribute to the community as means of

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 33

becoming part of the community. As we hired lawyers for the office, we encouraged all of them to do something to make this a better community; involve yourself in activities outside of the firm. I had a real interest in civic community charitable activities that could benefit the area, especially if it benefited children. Over the years, many of the people in the law firm have adopted the same focus of involvement and have done similar things.” Phil’s charitable passion went well beyond volunteering time at a soup kitchen or working on a house with Habitat for Humanity. Instead, he used his business acumen to assist amazing organizations that would go on to have profound impacts, not only locally, but globally. “In the 1980s, I was part of the group that helped start what is now the Texas Research and Technology Foundation. It is 1,000+ acres between San Antonio and Castroville that is focused on advanced research and medical technology. I then worked heavily with the San Antonio Medical Foundation. It was formed in 1947 and it was the entity whose purpose was to recruit and attain a medical school for San Antonio. It has been the catalyst for the South Texas

34 | September/october 2012

Medical Center. Along the way, I was working with Christus Children’s Hospital Foundation, then Southwest Research Institute, where currently I am the Chairman. For many years I’ve been on the Board of the United Way and led a multi-year reorganization effort where we moved from simply funding existing non-profit organizations to the development of a strategy to targeting specific problem areas that a single agency could not address.” Still heavily involved with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), it’s an organization that Phil is quite passionate about. “SwRI now has approximately 3,000 employees. The organization is simply amazing and I’m so honored to be a part of it. Some might not recognize the name, but some of the things that they have done are truly outstanding. They are the entity that determined how and why the Challenger shuttle crashed. They are the leading outside contractor on NASA’s Mars and Jupiter missions. They developed, tested, and made the prototype modifications to the Humvees used in Iraq and Afghanistan that significantly reduced the injuries to our military. This is a world-class organization that is devoted to work to

advance the public good.” Additionally, Phil sits on the board for Valero Energy Corporation. As their children (Shannon and Philip John, Jr) had grown and moved on to begin their own families, Phil eventually retired in 2005 after 25 years as the managing partner of Fulbright’s San Antonio office. He still handles a handful of clients, and says “I’ll keep doing it part time as long as it’s still fun.” But with an empty house, the Pfeiffers began to look toward retirement and somewhere to settle that was outside of the city. “In ’08 we were living in Sendero Ranch in San Antonio, and we had a couple of friends from Palm Springs, CA who came to this area because they had heard about this place called Cordillera Ranch. We had never even heard of it. We decided to tag along with them and within short order we knew that this would be a wonderful place to live, and knew it would be great for the grandkids. Our friends from Palm Springs never ended up coming, but we bought property in ’08.” According to the Pfeiffers, the fit has been perfect. “The quality of people that live here is absolutely amazing. They are just the icing on the cake. The grandkids come out for a few weeks each summer, and they just love it. Between all the club camps, they just have a blast. There is so much for them to do here. And for Diane and myself, it’s just wonderful. We are heavily involved with the Clubs, playing golf, the Nature Club, the Wine Club; we could just go on and on. You are surrounded by people that, after successful careers, just genuinely love where they live now, and it shows in all the people that you meet here.” True to the central basis for so many of the Pfeiffer’s decisions, it all begins and ends with family. “Our biggest motivator for moving to San Antonio was family, and our ability to maximize our time together. As the kids moved off, our motivator was the grandkids and moving to Cordillera Ranch was central to that. And at the same time, my involvement in trying to improve our communities was centered around not only helping other families, but also providing my family with the best community we could. Each and every one of us should strive to not only focus on our families, but to improve our communities in any way possible – no matter how big or small we might feel the impact is, it still makes a difference.”

STAFF PROFILE

JIM OSBORNE

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT, josborne@cordilleraranch.com 210.336.9000

NAME Jim Osborne HOMETOWN New London, Iowa FAMILY Father - Ronald Osborne, Mother - Karen Osborne, Brother - Evan Osborne, Sister - Emily Hymes. All of my family is still located in Iowa . EDUCATION Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Iowa State University in 2005. HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR FIELD? When I left high school I really had no clue what I wanted to do. I started working on a general studies associate degree from a local junior college. During my summers I was spending time working on the grounds maintenance staff at Burlington Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa. I found it very enjoyable, I was able to be around golf, as well as be in the outdoors. During my time there I began to realize how much went into the maintenance of golf courses, and in turn started figuring out what type of school work I needed to get involved with in order to advance further in the profession. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH CORDILLERA RANCH? I came on with Cordillera Ranch in December of 2010, it is hard to believe that I am approaching two years already. Prior to moving here I was in Birmingham, AL for little over five years, and had short stops in Wisconsin and Georgia during and immediately following college. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING IN THE HILL COUNTRY? It’s quiet! Growing up in a rural farm community with a population of 1,900 and ending up in Birmingham, AL with a very diverse 1+ million people was a bit of a shock. The big city was fun for a while, but it has been nice to get back to a bit more peaceful setting. Living in Boerne has allowed the best of both worlds; the quiet of the Hill Country, and the city right down the road if I get an itch.

36 | September/october 2012

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/ INTERESTS? I love the game of golf. I enjoy both playing and watching golf. I am a sports enthusiast, and a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. I also enjoy running to keep healthy and relieve stress. FAVORITE SPORTING EVENT THAT YOU HAVE ATTENDED? Probably working at both the 2004 PGA Championship, and the 2005 Masters were a couple of the neatest experiences. I also attended the 2010 Fed-Ex Orange Bowl and the 2010 BCS National Championship within 48 hours of each other. FAVORITE QUOTE? “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful” - Herman Cain FAVORITE MOVIE AND WHY? I can’t put my finger on a specific one, but I am definitely a comedy guy. Pretty much anything that Adam Sandler, or Will Farrell have had their hands on will entertain me.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR BUSINESS? I would have to say the economy, and more specifically the golf economy. When I went through my schooling and graduated the golf industry was thriving as was the market as a whole. Since that time things have gone south. It has made superintendents jobs much more difficult as budgets have been cut and expectations have risen. It has also affected me personally in regards to career advancement. As more and more golf courses close their doors, there are fewer positions available and more qualified people available to fill them. Things are beginning to look better, and I am fortunate to have a fantastic situation with Cordillera Ranch. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE IN YOUR BUSINESS?

Waking up every day and knowing that there will be a brand new set of challenges ahead of you, and laying down at night knowing that you overcame those challenges.

CANCER CENTER A FORCE FOR GOOD COUNCIL By Mary Ballenger Brook

casual atmosphere seduced us – we are now proud members of the club, lot owners and are planning our “forever home” at Cordillera Ranch!!! Steve is the managing partner of Langley & Banack law firm and I have a wonderfully fulfilling “full-time job” as the current President of the Cancer Center Council (CCC), an all-volunteer organization comprised of 655 dedicated members. Our mission is to support the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio. We fulfill this mission through cancer education, community outreach, patient assistance, fundraising and volunteer services. We’re very proud of our long-standing relationship with the CTRC which began in 1984 when the CCC was founded. As a result of our efforts, we have donated more than $3.5 million to the CTRC, including our current pledge of $1 million to establish the Cancer Center Council Distinguished Chair in Oncology. The Cordillera Ranch community has embraced and supported the Cancer Center Council in many ways. One of our members, Elaine Palance, will be hosting

Elaine has selected the Cancer Center Council as beneficiary of the event and will donate a portion of the art sales and ticket sales to our organization. Other CCC members who live in Cordillera Ranch include Jan and Frank Newton, Jenny Hartsell, Linda and Thomas McCloskey, Jan Pieper, Lisa Rall and Giva Frashier. We are grateful for our Cordillera Ranch members and thank them for their support! We’re thrilled to invite you to participate in our primary fundraising event, the Partners Shopping Card. For the past thirteen years, this program has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for the cancer center. Partners Shopping Cards may be purchased for $50 and the cardholder is entitled to receive a 20% discount at hundreds of participating retailers and restaurants during the tenday shopping period, October 19 - 28. For twenty-one years, Coleen Grissom, one of Cordillera Ranch’s own, continues to be the “Ms. of Ceremonies” for the San Antonio Express-News Book & Author Luncheon benefiting the CTRC Phase I Clinical Research Program. This fundraiser features six best-selling authors who speak to more than 1,000 attendees about their latest books, which can be purchased and autographed at the event. Cancer Center Council volunteers serve as co-chairs and committee members for the event and conduct the raffle. This year’s luncheon will be held at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel on Monday, October 8 at 11:30 a.m. (book sales open at 10:00). We welcome you to visit www.ctrc.net for more information or to purchase a ticket or table. This event sells out quickly every year, so you will not want to miss it! Our Annual Spring Luncheon raises funds for the CTRC Patient Assistance Fund. The Patient Assistance fund

provides help to cancer patients who are in need of lodging, food supplements, dietary intervention, transportation and social services. Last year’s event raised approximately $50,000. Our next CCC Spring Luncheon will be held at the Omni Hotel Colonnade on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. The keynote speaker will be Steve Ford, former “First Son” and actor, who will speak about the impact of cancer on his life after his mother, Betty Ford’s cancer diagnosis and other stories from the White House and Hollywood. The CCC also provides volunteer services in the CTRC clinics and at various community outreach and educational programs including the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. This is an international scientific symposium for the exchange of research and information among more than 7,500 breast cancer scientists and clinicians from nearly 100 countries. This year marks the 35th anniversary and held on December 4-8, at

the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The Cancer Center Council has recently become a member of the Boerne Chamber of Commerce. We’re excited to begin this new partnership with the BCC and will have our “Ribbon Cutting Ceremony” at the Boerne Chamber of Commerce on August 21 at 2:00 p.m. We hope you’ll join us in the celebration! As you can see, we are a very busy and hard-working group of volunteers who are passionate about advancing the CCC’s goals and mission to support the CTRC. All of us are committed to one purpose which is to assist and offer care to those who are suffering the daily physical, emotional and financial stresses of cancer; and to provide resources to develop effective new treatments and therapies for cancer patients, and ultimately, find a cure! At the end of this calendar year, I will have the honor and privilege of “passing the gavel” of the CCC Presidency to the very capable and multi-talented Pam

Burdick. Pam’s hard work and devotion to the Cancer Center Council have been exemplary and I have enjoyed working with her over this past year to initiate several new and exciting programs for the CCC. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve as President of this amazing group of men and women who work so tirelessly for the cause! If you are interested in learning more about the Cancer Center Council, want to become a member, or purchase a Partners Shopping Card, please call (210) 450-5571 or visit our website at www. cancercentercouncil.net. THE CTRC’S ONGOING WAR AGAINST CANCER

In 1971, President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act, effectively inaugurating the “War on Cancer.” At the time, patients who received a diagnosis of cancer often had little hope. So much has changed over the past four decades, and I’m proud to say that the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) has been a longtime partner in this fight. A group of San Antonio physicians and community leaders established the CTRC in November 1974 as an independent, non-profit multidisciplinary outpatient radiation and cancer therapy center. In 2007, we merged with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. This merger brought together talented and dedicated cancer researchers and a broad array of resources to create the only synergistic set of clinical care, cancer research, training opportunities and outreach programs in our region. The CTRC continues to serve – in a vastly expanded capacity – residents of San Antonio and South Texas, as well as patients from across the United States, northern Mexico and other countries around the globe. CTRC physicians, scientists and staff consider it an honor and privilege to serve the large, diverse population in our region. Our physicians and staff provide care with a personal touch for each patient, at the same time offering them the latest and most promising therapies. In choosing us, our patients choose life over cancer.

40 | September/october 2012

Like our patients, we are unique…. CTRC is the only NCI-designated Cancer Center in South Texas The CTRC serves not only the San Antonio metropolitan area but also more than 4 million South Texans. To be an NCI-designated center, we must make significant contributions to our region and to advances in cancer research, with a special emphasis in cancer prevention and, through clinical trials, visualizing the cancer cures of tomorrow. CTRC provides state-of-the-art compassionate care to our unique population. From educational and outreach programs aimed at understanding the cancer health disparities in South Texas to basic and clinical research studies focused on cancers prevalent in our region, the CTRC’s researchers and clinicians are dedicated to serving the citizens of our community and beyond. CTRC’s Institute for Drug Development (IDD)is internationally recognized The CTRC’s Institute for Drug Development (IDD) is one of the largest phase I clinical oncology units in the world and is internationally recognized for the ability to move new cancer treatments from earliest inception to FDA approval within a single organization. Indeed, 20 of the most effective anticancer drugs that are standard-of-care today were developed or first tested at the CTRC.

CTRC provides free community outreach and educational programs. The CTRC is dedicated not only to providing the best possible treatment for our patients, but also to providing educational opportunities and public speakers for the community. I personally have enjoyed meeting with the Cordillera Ranch Men’s Group and Women’s Group. We also host free monthly informational seminars at the CTRC on a variety of cancer related topics, from the latest nanoradiation research to what to do when your loved one is diagnosed with cancer. We can now treat many cancers and even cure some. When President Nixon signed the National Cancer Act, a young Senator Edward Kennedy was standing at his side. Sadly, Senator Kennedy died in 2009 of glioblastoma, a deadly type of brain tumor - a poignant reminder of how far we still have to go. That is why we at the CTRC are working tirelessly on promising new treatments for cancer. Our mission is to eradicate this dreadful disease! Ian M. Thompson, Jr., M.D. Director Cancer Therapy & Research Center We invite you to visit www.ctrc.net for more information or call (210) 450-1000 for patient referrals or second opinions.

Happy Trails

Boerne trail

By Leah Bredemeyer

42 | September/october 2012

Outdoor recreation in Boerne has gotten easier to enjoy with the completion of footpath construction along side of Cibolo Creek. With fires burning, Boerne celebrated the opening of the newest edition of walking trails during the Boernefest TrailBlaze 2012 on May 5. With local vendors, musical entertainment and fire jugglers lined the trail and kept families busy throughout the festivities. The recently finished trail, The Heart of Boerne Trail, runs from Ye Kendall Inn and ends right before the Main Street Bridge. When asked, Mayor Mike Schultz thought Boernefest Trailblaze was a success and was a great way to introduce the new trail to the community.“ It was an amazing demonstration of how our community comes together to celebrate all that Boerne has to offer,” Schultz said. “Sharing Boerne’s unique style of fun with thousands of friends, neighbors, and visitors.”

To bring the community together and highlight the many givings of downtown, The Hill Country Mile (HCM) has been created. HCM is the catalyst to unify our community and partner with businesses, groups and organizations. The HCM will play a significant role in preserving the rich historic and cultural identity of downtown Boerne, promoting the quality of life through a safer, cleaner, more walk-able place to live, work and play, and fostering economic growth and business diversity. According to Schultz, the vision for the HCM is to have it continue to evolve. “Of course downtown Boerne has been evolving for the last 150 years and it will continue to do so for the next 150 years,” he said. “We are certain that the new walking trails, not only on Cibolo Creek, but throughout all of Boerne will only add to the list of reasons people want to explore Boerne. We have seen a great deal of private investment in the historic Main Street

area in the last two years and expect that trend to continue with even more new shopping and entertainment spots planned along the creek.” Continuing construction past The Heart of Boerne Trail for The River Road Run and The Fern Bank Falls is set to wrap up soon. Not only are the river trails a great new way for residents to enjoy the downtown area, but also a great place for visitors to experience Boerne. For the future of Boerne, Schultz said, “I challenge our residents and business leaders to get involved in the many activities in our community by participating, volunteering, and sharing ideas. Boerne has so much going for it, and those of us that live, work, and play here have the chance to celebrate every day by taking an active role in making Boerne the most special place in the Hill Country.”

OUTDOORS When I contemplate why I have learned to love nature, wilderness and the outdoors, I look no further than my childhood. So often the answer to this question involves people from other generations, family, friends and the knowledge and experience they shared. My first memories enjoying nature are as a child going to Cajun parties with my parents in southern Louisiana. Cajuns simply know how to party, and these parties usually start late morning or mid-day and stretch well into the night. All the children who attended these parties where left to explore the land and surrounding areas on our own, which always included trips to the swamp, creeks and ponds on the property we were visiting. I can recall at a very young age that most wildlife in southern Louisiana commanded respect, whether messing with a loggerhead turtle, water moccasin, alligator, catfish, etc., all of which would inflict severe pain on you if you did not give them their due space. When I was five, my parents moved to east Texas as my father went to work for a lumber company. Fortunately for my cousins and myself, my grandparents lived nearby, were retired, and all thoroughly

enjoyed bass fishing. One set of my grandparents lived near us on Lake Sam Rayburn and my other grandparents lived on Steinhagen Lake, or as the locals call it, Dam B Reservoir. These two lakes are joined by the Angelina River, which in itself is a wonderful fishery. When not in school, I was always either in the woods with my cousins and friends, at the lake with my grandparents and parents or with my father on one of the vast forest properties the lumber company owned where my father worked. It was during my late childhood years that I learned the definition of a renewable forest and the idea of conservation. Kirby Lumber Company owned vast tracks of timber where they would harvest pine trees and replant large groves after harvest. The art of growing a pine tree from seedling to harvest was around 20 years. It was on Kirby property that I first learned to hunt with my father. Primarily ducks in flooded timber and white tailed deer. Just before I started high school, my parents moved to Kingwood, Texas, as my father changed career paths for final time. Ironically, Kingwood is known as “The Livable Forest”. Although I don’t attribute

my love of the outdoors to my time in Kingwood, it was a great place to live as a teenager. Although my younger years provided fertile ground on which to develop a love for the outdoors, it was not until my days in college at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos that I truly found my current profession and strong outdoor ethics. I had some strong mentors during my college days who taught me a vast amount of knowledge about leading groups of people into the wilderness, how to teach minimum impact outdoor skills, and how to pass along Leave No Trace ethics. I took a course through the National Outdoor Leadership School that firmly planted these educational theories in my mind and through experiential learning, allowed the roots of education to grow deep. When I look back at the many influences in my life that led to a love of nature, wilderness and the outdoors, I’ve been blessed to have many caring individuals on my path. These days, the role of passing on love and knowledge of nature is perhaps more crucial than ever, and more challenging. That’s because the obstacles to sustaining and rejuvenating our collec-

tive commitment to conservation, such as increased urbanization, electronic overload and more, are abundant and thoroughly documented. Even with the challenges we face today, I have come to know many families at Cordillera Ranch who demonstrate that the conservation torch is still being passed from one generation to another. And it’s happening in some wonderful and sometimes surprising ways. I have my own children now, and as they grow and learn the ways of the woods from my wife and I, they have come to enjoy being outside much more than in our home. They’ve learned to appreciate the song of a bird, the wonder of the moon and stars we watch each night, the amazing sound of rain falling on a parched hill country yard and the art of sneaking up on deer. There is nothing I look forward to more than instilling a strong love of nature to my two kids, who may one day be inspired to teach their children the same. Onward! TRAVEL

WHAT’S THE CATCH? By Jeff Wilcox Jeff Wilcox is an avid traveler, and someone that is continually seeking out the adventure that our great state has to offer. When he contacted us about an upcoming trip he had to the Texas Coast, we figured that it would be a great time to let him tell us about the experience. The temperatures are coming down, the fish are biting, and it is prime time for that coastal trip you’ve been putting off. I love fishing the Texas Coast. I absolutely love waking up before dawn, smelling the sea air as we purr through the bays, and locking into some great redfish and trout. With this in mind, via word of mouth, I heard of an exclusive fishing camp and guide service based out of Rockport that was right up my alley. With a couple of my favorite fishing buddies in tow, we made the three hour trip from the San Antonio area and pulled into Rockport just as the sun was beginning to settle over the serene bays. As we pulled up to the Back Lakes Lodge, we opened the door and were met by Luis. Luis explained to us that he was our chef for the weekend, and quickly asked, “Do you guys like ribeyes?” Without hesitation, we assured him that yes, we LOVE ribeyes, and so after showing us the fully stocked refridgerator and bar (both of which were included in cost), he ran to the store to fetch dinner. As we all unwinded while watching the big screen TV and sitting in leather recliners, Luis busied himself over the BBQ pit, eventually whipping up some delicious steaks, potatoes, salads, and drinks. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner, complete with wine, and retired to the game room to play some pool and low ante poker. Once Luis saw that we were subdued for the evening, he set a menu for breakfast and left us to ourselves the rest of the evening. The lodging is fantastic. A spacious home, featuring 3 beds/3 baths, each of us had our own private quarters with a private bath. Once we had told enough fish stories for one night, it was nice to lay in your own room for a little light reading. We were all awakened to the smell of bacon on the stove, and we emerged to find Luis whipping up a breakfast fit for a king. Bacon, eggs, waffles, orange juice, and hot coffee was laid out across the table, and we all devoured it knowing we were in for a long day. As we emerged from the lodge to head for the boat, he handed each of us a pre-packed lunch he had made that morning. Nice touch!! He also packed our cooler for us with beers, soft drinks, waters, and loaded the cooler into the airboat for us. That’s right, an airboat. Austin Nesloney, the guide for Back Lakes Lodge, specializes in shallow water fishing, and in order to get us into those untouched shallow waters, it takes unique transportation. If you’ve never enjoyed an airboat ride, I’d recommend. It’s an odd sensation as the boat doesn’t sit in the water, it sits atop the water. Zooming along at 45 miles per hour in water that is literally ankle deep is exhilarating. Austin told us he had scouted out a few areas for us, and within a few minutes, we glided to a stop and Austin had all three of us holding rods ready to begin the fight. And the fight came quickly and didn’t stop for the rest of the day. Fish after fish we fought, from trout to redfish to black drum. With a full keeper box, Austin took us from location to location, all the while we’re enjoying the scenery and the beauty of the Gulf Coast. Upon return, tired and smiling from ear to ear, Austin cleaned our fish while Luis poured us our favorite drinks. As we all enjoyed the air conditioning back in the lodge, Luis asked us how we would like our catch prepared for the evening. We enjoyed a wonderful freshly caught fish dinner under the lights in the backyard. Just three guys, laughing loudly, and feeling like kings for the weekend. If you’re thinking of getting away this fall/winter, consider the Back Lakes Lodge. They also offer “cast/blast” packages that involve duck hunting in addition to the guided fishing. But book early – the Lodge fills quickly. WHAT: Back Lakes Lodge, Rockport, TX

CONTACT: Shane Reynolds at sreynolds@cordilleraranch.com to set up your trip to Back Lakes Lodge.

HITS: The amenities and food are stellar Comfortable beds and great TVs Game room with pool tables

MISSES: When it’s hot, it’s HOT. Plan accordingly. The airboat is LOUD. Kids might not like the noise

INTERIOR DESIGN

By Rhonda Rushing

Definition: Faux ( /ˈfoʊ/) is a French word for “false”. In relation to interior design, faux finishing is the individual artist’s capability to make something appear like something that it is not. Faux finishing dates back to the days of cave paintings and the ancient Egyptian tombs, and has been developed into techniques that have been used in everything from fine homes to the most majestic castles. Techniques and options abound with faux painting. Whether it’s for a small bathroom, or for a grand gameroom, the sky is the limit in terms of what can be accomplished. Your best bet to begin is simply to research. Look at examples, look at techniques, and then try to look at your home with an eye for what is possible. So what do you do with that enormous blank wall in your family room? Let’s add some plaster , give it some depth with the right tone of glaze, and you will see that you have created an old world crumbled stucco finish making it easier to decorate because less truly becomes more. Venetian Plaster is one of the best products out there. If you are wanting the “true” venetian look, understand that your sheetrock must be floated and skimmed with a smooth texture. There are always options to take it to another level if your home is previously textured. Sample boards are a must. I recommend that if you are a first timer in dealing with faux finishes, live with your sample boards morning, noon and night for a few days. Lighting is also key and it is different in every situation. How about that “builders white” dome or recessed ceiling in your entry? Let it

glow with a copper patina metallic finish to create an inviting ambience into any home. Metallic ceiling not for you? Then the right color paint with a glaze and maybe a hand-painted medallion is the answer. Tired of your plain jane kitchen cabinets? You have many options here as well. Antiquing your cabinetry will provide a muted feel that also accentuates the lines in your cabinetry. Another option is doing a 2-3 color distressed finish to create more

of a primitive cottage feel. Stain cabinets that just aren’t the right tone or have taken a beating can easily be upgraded with some simple faux finishing techniques. Whether you want to achieve an elegant rustic finish or the look of weathered, reclaimed wood, the proper faux finish can be done to customize your home or office. Yes, just like you see in the magazines! No mess, no stress….most cabinet makeovers can be accomplished from start to finish in one week!

Many of you might have an old trunk that was passed down to you from family. Of course, it has lived most of its life in the attic, however, with faux painting this item can actually become a beautiful center piece in your home. Surely you have a spot for it somewhere in your home to exercise its functionality. Maybe just one color with a little distressing and artwork does wonders and will bring it back to life. I encourage you to always pick your fabrics first if you will be incorporating anything new. It is a lot easier to match paint to fabric, choosing paint color first may limit you greatly at the fabric store. The possibilities of faux painting are endless. Marbleize your columns, make your 20 switch plates screaming from your backsplash disappear into the stone or learn how to create the fanciest powder bath in the neighborhood that every guest will use and adore. Whether you are building new or renovating old, faux finishes are an excellent way to literally “fix” minor problems that occur with construction. The right colors and finishes will easily turn ordinary into extraordinary! As with any skill, practice takes perfect. There are a number of ways to begin practicing techniques, including taking Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Classes in Boerne at The Shoppe. If attending a class isn’t for you, then do some research, find what you like, and study. You’ll find that faux painting is a technique that many can not only learn, but become quite successful with. Of course, if all of it sounds a bit overwhelming, hiring a professional will certainly give you the results you desire.

With 10 years experience as a professional faux painter, I feel confident to work with anyone , any style. On- site consultations preferred for the best results and most accurate quotes. If you are considering having work done, please feel free to contact me! I will give you my honest opinion, ups and downs, in and outs. And will also be the 1st to say “too much faux is just too much”! Rhonda Rushing Shoppe • 830-33108102 • Rhondajdesigns.com • Theshoppeboernetexas.com

Few backyard elements can do more to enhance your outdoor living experience than a shade structure. ™

Whether it is an arbor that welcomes guests to your home, a gazebo that is strictly ornamental, a pergola that provides dining under a canopy of vines, or a pavilion that frames your outdoor room and calls your attention to the sights, sounds, and smells that could have previously been mistaken for vacant air – these structures are a source of some of the most acute outdoor living pleasures. ®

EDUCATION

BOERNE EDUCATION FOUNDATION With a growing population, and dwindling budgets, the Boerne Independent School District faces a variety of challenges. However, due to the foresight and diligence of several people, the Boerne Education Foundation was created in 1997 to assist the school district with funds above and beyond what their current budget allows. From the donations from the general public, the Boerne Education Foundation has been able to positively affect the educational experiences of countless students, and only continues to expand that reach. Recently holding their 15th annual Rock on Fiesta event at Don Strange Ranch, the BEF had over 720 attendees and were able to raise over $170,000 from this single event. As budgets across the state continue to be slashed, groups such as the Boerne Education Foundation will become even more important in coming years. Below are a few of the wonderful opportunities that the Boerne Education Foundation was able to help the school district continue to be one of the finest in the state. To learn more about the Boerne Education Foundation go to boerneeducationfoundation.org.

HOME TOUR

N O E M GA Cordillera Ranch features many of the finest homes in the Texas Hill Country. In each issue of Cordillera Ranch Living, we have toured many of them as showcase pieces to show off the creativity and passion that our Preferred Builders put behind each of their homes. In this issue, we toured several homes that boast of some of the most beautiful and functional gamerooms in the area. 72 | September/october 2012

Great Homes Robert s. thornton, l.p. Exotic game trophies, antiques and furnishings from around the world fill this 22’ x 49’ walk-out Game Room built for family and large group entertaining. At left is a spectacular pool table, just inside Kolbe French doors that lead to a covered patio complete with fireplace and built-in BBQ grille. At right is the seating area centered on a masonry fireplace and TV which opens up to the multi-level negative edge pool and deck, fully furnished with outdoor dining settings overlooking long northern views. Centrally located is a great granite topped wet bar with a restored antique light fixture and seating for four. The room is finished with reclaimed long leaf pine wood floors, surround-sound speakers by Sterling Technologies and a dumbwaiter for food service from Kitchen above.

Stadler Custom Homes This game room features a virtual design buffet! A full glass wall separates the fullscale exercise room from the game room, which allows for the feeling of one huge open space, and a separate sitting area and bar within the game room allows for large gathering entertaining. This particular game room also features a new trend that is becoming increasingly popular with clients, a combined media and game room space. By combining these spaces, homeowners are able to reduce the overall square footage in their home AND feature a space that is more functional for their family’s needs. This combined game/media area includes a media curtain that can be left open so that the large screen television is open to the game room for events such as college football games or can be closed off for an intimate setting when watching a movie.

Authentic Custom Homes, LLC We created an entertainment room which captures vast views of the Texas Hill Country overlooking the Guadalupe River. Our custom design involve a complete bar open to the 22x24 space allowing access to a television, snack table, game table and a conversational seating area. We featured stained concrete floors, faux finished painting, cedar beams and Luder stone accents.
