A community is more than homes

within it, the grounds that are maintained or the beauty of its natural features. The colors, character, energy and vitality of a community or neighborhood are way more than what can be designed and developed – though those are key building blocks – it’s the people that reside within it. Cordillera Ranch is undoubtedly a beautiful, breathtakingly scenic and thoughtfully planned development, but the thousand-plus residents and club members that call it home help turn

a spectacular neighborhood into an unmatched lifestyle and community. The family-focused diverse lifestyle and amenities at Cordillera has helped cultivate a group of kids that excel in a wide range of sports, academics, arts and other areas of life. With such a successful ‘youth movement’ we were spurred to do our first ever kids only cover feature for Cordillera Ranch Living. Randomly selected, these kids represent just a small sliver of the deep pool of talented juniors in the community. In searching for a few to include, it became clear that we could do a volume of magazines on the accomplishments and aspirations of these teens – and still not cover the whole bunch. However, just reading the features on these twelve unique youngsters, you get a glimpse into the assorted mix of talents and families that call the area home. Their achievements are inspiring, humbling and a reflection on some great parenting. It’s easy to admire how well-spoken so many of these kids are, particularly as I think back on how I might have sounded at that age. This group has been well-prepared for the life ahead and we’re proud to have them part of Cordillera Ranch. Enjoy the read on these kids that are helping turn this picturesque neighborhood into a vibrant community energized by their ambitions and great character. It’s safe to say that the future here at Cordillera is bright! See you around the Ranch,

DINING

For our first year for the Cordillera Ranch garden we were pleasantly surprised with our summer harvest. We produced about 300 pounds of vegetables! Hopefully you have enjoyed the fresh produce on our menus and vegetable soups. We will be in the process on turning over the garden soon and planting our fall harvest. I will be planting peas, carrots, various lettuces, beets, spinach, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts and pumpkins. Look forward to some fresh, healthy home grown vegetables this fall!

24 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

In addition the garden we would like to introduce you to two seafood companies we work with here at the club. Honolulu Fish Company is our supplier for pacific species. Wayne Samiere, the company’s founder is a trained marine biologist; he has a passion for environmental conservation and sustainability. He does not condone net fishing and deals only with hook and line boats with lines running 45-95 feet which is more selective and less dangerous than net fishing. The company sells over 30 varieties of fish to 2,000 customers

worldwide. The fish is harvested, cleaned, packed and shipped; the fish arrives 18-30 hours after leaving the water. Our local fish supplier is of course, Groomer seafood based in San Antonio. The company, founded in the 1950’s in Port Isabel, specializes in Texas gulf coast fish, snapper, redfish, drum, flounder and speckled trout. In 1982 the company had facilities in Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Corpus Christi. In 1993 the operations were consolidated in San Antonio with a 20,000 square foot state of the art facility.

Groomer ships to the finest restaurants and country clubs throughout the state. The culinary team at Cordillera Ranch has found the seafood quality of these companies to be unsurpassed. We invite you to come in and eat some the freshest tastiest seafood in the state. Offerings

include Seared Hawaiian moonfish (Opa) with smoked tomato whipped potatoes, grilled broccolini, sweet corn relish and cilantro-caper butter and grilled gulf grouper with truffled gnocchi, baby spinach, grape tomatoes, endive and key lime emulsion. Bon Appetite!

Golf GOLF

Cordillera Ranch will be hosting the Texas Golf Association State Mid-Amateur Championship from September 26-29. We are extremely excited to host this great event for the first time that boasts some of the very best amateur golfers in the state of Texas. Play will be conducted over three days with 132 players competing the first two days with a final round cut to the top 54 players. Congratulations to Charlie Hill, Bryan Moore and Dan Blake on earning the three exemptions that were awarded to Cordillera Ranch this year by qualifying in July. The TGA does a fantastic job running this event and this will be the first time that many of the contestants have had the opportunity to play our great golf course. There has been a tremendous buzz about Cordillera Ranch hosting the event as I have heard from several top players from around the state who will be competing. While Mother Nature will hopefully start to give us a break in September with cooler temperatures, Director of Agronomy Mark Semm and his team should have the golf course in outstanding condition. Many Cordillera Ranch members will be assisting as volunteers or “ambassadors” during the competition and have expressed their support for the tournament. This goes a long way in creating a great golf experience for the players and their families who will be here. We look forward to a memorable event and hope you will have the opportunity to come out and watch some great golf. September marks the return of a busy tournament schedule here at the Club. The Men’s Match Play Championship kicks it off September 6-8 where Chris Hill was the winner last year. Both the Men’s Senior Club Championship and Ladies Club Championship also take place this month. These events have continued to grow in popularity as they are a great way to test your skill as well as a chance to meet some different players that may not be part of your regular group. Both Gross and Net prizes are awarded. Jarratt Jones is the defending champion in the Men’s Senior and has won the event all six times it has been played. Marilyn McGaw won the Ladies Championship last year but will be unable to defend her title this year due to injury. The 8th Annual C-Star Member-Guest takes place October 17-19 this year and is the highlight event at the Club each year. Last year we introduced an opening night Putting Party that was a huge hit and we look to build on that again this year. The format will once again be the five 9-hole matches that allow for great camaraderie for everyone playing. Larry Smith and his partner Drew Smith are the defending champions. I hope you will consider playing as there is no better way to showcase the Club and community lifestyle. As Summer comes to a close, I look back and am very thankful for the timely rains and somewhat mild weather we had the past few months. The golf course is in fantastic shape so please come out and enjoy our spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. See you on the course, Marc DeWall, PGA Director of Golf, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch mdewall@cordilleraranch.com | 830.336.4653

TITLEIST PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE (TPI) AT CORDILLERA RANCH Want to increase your distance? Reduce your handicap/shoot lower scores? Are you in pain as a result of playing golf? If you answered yes to any of these questions you are a candidate for our Titleist Performance Institute Golf Conditioning Program. The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is the world’s leading educational organization and research facility dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. Since 2003, TPI has studied thousands of golfers ranging from the top professional to weekend golfers. TPI gathered important data on players of all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels. Just in 2012, TPI has contributed over 33 wins on the PGA TOUR. Watch the Titleist Performance Institute show on the The Golf Channel every Monday at 4:30pm. This will give you an idea of what we do at Cordillera Ranch and how it can benefit your game. AVAILABLE TPI PROGRAM AT CORDILLERA RANCH TPI Golf Screening ($195): Utilizing the TPI physical screening process, we measure your ability to generate speed and determine the most efficient energy transfer during your golf swing. We will isolate any physical limitations, correlate these findings to your swing technique and prescribe a custom conditioning program. The custom conditioning program will include a fitness handicap used to measure your “golf fitness”. We will walk through each exercise in your program so that you understand how to do each one. Your customized exercises focus on correcting imbalances in your body that are specific to your swing by improving your faults, flexibility, balance and strength. More importantly your customized exercises will also help you to prevent injury. After four weeks, you are asked to return for a re-evaluation. This consists of putting you through the same evaluation as you

originally took to determine the level of improvement by comparing your past fitness handicap to your current. TPI Golf Fitness Classes If you prefer to exercise in a group setting, we will also have two different weekly TPI Classes. These exercises have been developed by TPI to improve your overall “Golf Fitness Handicap”. The varieties of movements you will perform have been tested by TPI to improve your golf swing. TPI Golf Circuit Training ($30, max 10 people) TPI Golf Circuit Training will focus on increasing your strength and endurance. The class will focus on movements to build cardio, flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, mental clarity and mental awareness during a round of golf. TPI “Warm Up Your Swing, Don’t Swing to Warm Up” ($10, max 15 people) This TPI class will help you learn the proper tools to get your body ready to tee off. With focus on flexibility and functional movements you will increase your mobility and stability throughout the round. This class is a great introduction to Golf Fitness for the beginner to the advance golfers. If you have any questions about the various TPI Programs at Cordillera Ranch, class time or prices please contact AnnKristin Allen at 210-367-5942 or Gevin Allen at 210-632-2787. Ann-Kristin Allen is a TPI Certified Physical Fitness Specialist with over 30 years’ experience in strength, endurance, sport specific, dance, aerobics, and Tabata training. Ann-Kristin received her education from the Cooper Institute with numerous certificates. Gevin Allen is a PGA Golf Professional with a certification in TPI Golf Swing Mechanics. Gevin has been teaching for over 20 years and was nominated for STPGA Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year award for the Western Chapter in 2010-2012.

CADDIES AVAILABLE

We are very proud to announce the availability of Caddies Here at Cordillera Ranch. We have partnered with Caddie Central in an innovative interactive new way to arrange for Caddies for your rounds at the Club. Whether you would like to have a traditional Bag Caddie carry your clubs while you walk the course or if you would like a Forecaddie to concierge your group around the course, members will now have the opportunity to experience both. You now have the ability to book when you are making your tee time. The caddie experience is a unique experience and an incredible opportunity to impress your clients or guests. A caddie is someone who assists golfers during their rounds. Their responsibilities include carrying the golfer’s bag, pacing yardages, replacing divots, raking bunkers and attending the flagstick. Caddying is part of golf’s heritage, “the way golf was meant to be played,” and part of its future. It is also a great way to learn the game of golf. Caddying is an investment for the future of young men and women. Anytime you would like a bag caddie or a forecaddie just let the Golf Shop know and we will take care of the scheduling. The more notice the better but at least 24 hours will work. Any short term requests will be filled as best as we can. So next time you play or bring clients or guests let us know and we will schedule a caddie for your round of golf. There is a $20 per player reservation fee charged to your account. The caddies work for gratuities with the recommended amount of $20 and up per player for Forecaddies based on performance. Recommended Bag Caddie gratuities are $80 and up per player based on performance. Please contact the Golf Shop at 830336-4653 and request the type of caddy you would like for your group and we will take care of the rest.

MUSIC

Indie World Artist In Review

Adam Zuniga, Discoveries is a Latin Infused Discovery That We LOVE! by Heather Jacks

28 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

What more can you ask for than delicious food, amazing wine and great musical entertainment. That is exactly what you will find every Friday night at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. Cordillera Ranch hosts a verity of rotating singers & songwriters. One of our most popular, local artist is Adam Zuniga. I fell in love with the music of Adam Zuniga with almost comical spontaneity. It was the song Faraway Places but I guess it could have been any of these tracks from his second studio release, Discoveries. Discoveries is a tour-de-force blend of rhythmic jazz, ambient acoustics, and electronic dance music, or IDM. His efforts culminate in what fits nicely on a promotional press package- world music. But it seems to be so much more than that. The tracks do sound boundary-breaking in their ability to pull from many different aesthetics from many different parts of the world; there is a certain inclusion of mainstream ideas that make it less like world music than most what consider. The greatest example of this is the electronic elements. Most of the tracks on Discoveries seem to pulsate with this electro-pop heartbeat. It is as if Zuniga is following a metronome-based style or pulse, something that is largely foreign to traditional world music. So either Adam Zuniga is not a traditional world artist, or he is changing the very face of the genre upside down. Either way, it is a victory. This electronically propelled dance groove seems to put him at odds with the jazz inspired free-thinking spaciness of the guitar. This is what makes everything so attractive. ‘Faraway Places’ propels forward with a clear-cut dance groove, and yet the guitar bobs and ebbs with the gigantic pulsing rhythm, making for an instrumental jazz song that is, well, brilliant. It is a perfect concoction. ‘La Batella’ has string Latin influences that propel the song, but the rhythmic backbone of the song is purely electronic. The duality really is something else. ‘Taking Time’ is your rather straightforward sullen somber track, which exists beautifully and paints a nice musical picture, but lacks that dynamics and overt fireworks of the heavier guitar jazz pieces. There are many things which Adam Zuniga is not. He is not theatrical. His tracks are broad and dynamic as if they existed all over the world and yet resonate just through the speakers. Theatrics indulge fancy displays of showmanship, concept songs, lyrical interludes, etc… Adam Zuniga lets the music breathe on its own merit, and we all win for it. Zuniga is a master of the instrument. He is a genre-swayer. You can hear that he is certainly trained classically (and after a brief run through his biography, I was comforted that indeed he was). So in all, Zuniga is a gratifying artist, who takes listeners on a journey that they never thought they would have gone on. Only the best artists (or most popular of course) can sway newcomers to a genre that is unfamiliar. But with the talented onslaught of Discoveries, a newcomer is more than willing to stay for more than just a trendy month. Zuniga has a recruited a fan for life; and I will keep my own pulse on his music like he keeps his own pulse on the rhythmic beauty of the beat. Heather has worked in the music industry in various capacities, since the eighties; radio, production, A&R, booking and most recently as a music journalist. She currently divides her time between the left and right coasts and is completing a multi-media project, inspired by her love for street music, busking and the people who make it. ADVENTURE When Bill Poston decides on a direction, he is unwavering. Never satisfied with 2nd place or 2nd best, Poston has had a career that is focused like a laser, and he and his wife Richele have enjoyed the adventure. An adventure that has ultimately brought them to Cordillera Ranch.

32 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Bill Poston, the son of a school teacher and a heavy equipment salesman while growing up in Pearland, Texas, began to show those around him that he liked to move fast very early on. He begins, “I graduated high school in 3 years. I was ready to move as fast as I could. I just wanted to get out of Pearland to begin seeing what the world had to offer. I went to Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) because they offered me an academic scholarship. If I had gone 4 years, I would have likely been valedictorian, but I didn’t, and again I graduated early. I majored in Finance, and again, I didn’t really have a plan for that, but rather, I was just ready to get out and see what was next. I had worked full time through college, was President of my fraternity, and when I graduated in ’88, it was the middle of the oil bust and the S&L crisis. My objective was to get a job in a corporate finance department or the banking industry, but those jobs were gone at that time. Magnum PI was on TV, and because I worked in the hotel business while I was in school, I got a job in Hawaii as the Assistant General Manager of a resort.” Poston continues, “It was a very fortunate situation for me because the hotel that I went to had 5 different connections with me in terms of the staff. The GM had worked with me at a hotel in Austin, so it all just worked out well. I moved there just to wait out the recession while surfing and having fun.” And while Poston may have been just biding his time, fate introduced him to Richele, which transformed his life. Richele begins, “I was born and raised in Hawaii. People in Hawaii never move,

so I had always planned to stay. Bill and I worked together at the hotel, and he irritated me at first. He thought he was my boss, and he wasn’t! He still thinks that way!”she laughs. “After a bit I warmed up to him, but the older ladies told me to stay away from him cause of his partying!” Bill jumps in, “I took her to a New Year’s Eve party, and it was really love at first date for me.” Richele, however, wasn’t so sure. “He was just abrupt and obnoxious. People are very kind and family oriented in Hawaii, and Bill was very direct and opinionated. It took some time, but we eventually started focusing on each other.” Richele and Bill eventually had a daughter together, and Bill’s career began to take him in different directions. He explains, “The hotel I was at was sold. The GM I was working for was let go, but it wasn’t near as much fun after that. I went from running the place to being little more than a figure head. So I moved to UT to pursue my MBA. I was pretty close to the top of the hotel industry by the time I was 25 years old. I could see the top was not far above me, and I didn’t want to be doing that for the next 40 years. So I chose school. I just wanted to transition into other industries. “ With Richele staying behind in Hawaii to have the support of family as she raised their daughter, Bill did what he had done before: dove into his studies, finished school early, and began to seek new directions. “I had finally gotten out of UT, and was hired by DeLoit. I moved to Pearland and was able to move the family there. Deloit is a global management consulting firm that provides strategic and operation-

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 33

al improvement advisory services. I was a consultant working primarily in the product development capabilities. The large consulting firms like DeLoit recruit talent, not necessarily skill sets. They refused to interview me in the 1st rounds. Somebody dropped out of the interview process, so they bumped me up. They interviewed me on campus, and in the office. After the interviews, I received 9 no’s and 1 yes. The 1 yes had way more clout than the 9 no’s, so I got the job. The guy that voted yes became my mentor, and is now on my advisory board of Kalypso.” Richele recounts the experience, “I was just so excited for the experience to be in Pearland. I was looking forward to the opportunities, and I was just happy for us all to be together. I was working some sort of secretary job, and I was watching the 2 kids (one previous child from a previous relationship.) I got pregnant again a few years after we moved, and we finally started looking at marriage.” The Postons were married in 1997, just after the birth of their second child. Poston was a partner at DeLoit by his mid 30’s, and Richele was loving her role as a stay at home mom. However, with any high-pressure career, the travels were hard. Bill explains, “I missed a lot of moments along the way. You orient your life around those 3 days a week that you’re home each week. I found that as the kids got older, they were as busy as I was with karate, and swimming, and acting, and all their activities. The weekends are very important to us. We’ve done a lot as a family together.” Bill began to look at land in the Hill Country; more specifically, he wanted land on the river between Comfort and Kerrville. Richele adds, “In the beginning, the travels were ok. The kids were little, I had help, and it wasn’t too bad. Then he wanted to move here to the Hill Country, and it was away from my help. It’s very hard, and there are times that I just wanted to scream and run away.” Bill had found his piece of property, and was already designing the home in his head. However, Richele had her doubts. “I told him that he had found his land, but he was going to move me out to the middle of nowhere with all these kids, and then he was going to get on a plane every Monday and I was going to be alone. It wasn’t going to work.” So, after seeing an ad for Cordillera Ranch, the Postons saw property on two separate days, and

34 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

by the end of their second trip, they were property owners. Bill explains, “It was the best of both worlds. Richele has the clubs and her friends, and I have the country.” As the Postons began to lay down their new roots, the consulting industry experienced a great upheaval. Bill explains, “In the wake of Enron, Worldcom, and the post 9/11 era, the management consulting industry had a big shakeup. DeLoit intended to separate the consulting and accounting businesses, but that didn’t happen. So myself and my partner, George Young, founded Kalypso. “ With a reputation known industry-wide, the founders of Kalypso saw immediate and enormous growth. Now a 40 million dollar firm with 165 employees in the US, Europe, and Mexico, and with clients such as Samsung, Pepsi, and Home Depot, Kalypso has proven to be a home run since the first day. With the new organization growing by leaps and bounds, the Postons focused again on their new home. “We went and looked at a Robert Thornton spec house, and we toured it, and just loved it, so we called Robert. We didn’t have near the money as a typical Thornton home, so what I found is that we did some really cool things on a budget with Robert, and he was just an incredibly person to work with.” In typical Poston form, once they had become residents, they wanted to have a party; a party that eventually overtook their home and became a complete event that is now funding multiple non-profits locally. Bill says, “The Luau was just a big party at first. We cooked Hawaiian food and just had people over for 7 years. However, iIt turned into a monster event, and we would get hundreds of people here. We turned it into a community event, and instead of here at the house, we do it in town at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. We invite any local nonprofit to participate and make it a city wide event. We’ve done it 4 years now at the Fairgrounds, and we’ve had 22 non-profits participate and we were able to give $9500 to them. Overall, we’ve given over $50,000 to local non-profits.” In addition to the non-profit work at a local level, Bill has founded a wonderful program to mentor college students, called the Stelos Alliance. “I split my time between Kalypso and the Stelos Alliance now. Stelow raises money for college

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 35

level scholarships, and provides leadership education. My professional life has been spent around people that went to Ivy League professionals. All these people with high end management and consulting positions; these people had top notch educations. I went to Texas State. I did everything right; honors, president of my fraternity, and held down a full time job. When you do all those things, you’re supposed to get your job when you graduate. But when I graduated, I got offers for less money than I was making when I was in college. So Stelos is important to me. It’s as important as Kalypso to me. We have 21 scholarships we offer annually, and the teaching is a principled leadership course that is a memorial for a friend of mine that died 4 years ago. He was my best man. So I teach at Texas State each semester, with 35 students in each class. We expect to teach it at Trinity next year, and we’ll teach it at Angelo State as well. When I was in college, I didn’t have that kind of guidance. I had tremendous help with my mentors, but I’m trying to bring that benefit to younger kids and present them a great opportunity. I’ve hired over 20 of those students from my classes– I try to get the rockstars.” And while Bill might be splitting his time between Kalypso and the Stelos Alliance, his hours are still nuts… just the way he likes it. “I took 10 weeks off last year for family vacations, but I work 365 days a year. We’ve been all over Europe, sailing in Greece, Korea, and all over Latin America. Jacob and I went fishing in Alaska last August. I still work the 80+ hours a week that I always have, but I split that time between the two groups and work remotely as much as I can.” And, because Poston even vacations seriously, he has a plan for 2016: “I have a grand plan that in 2016; 12 months in 12 different destinations. One destination each month, and while I’m in each destination, I will qquire or perfect 12 new skills. 12 different people will join me in each destination for each month. I’d like to write a book about it. It’s just about living deliberately. It’s the 3 things that I try to weave into every month; Innovation. Opportunities for young people. And Adventure. Those are my true passions, and where I’m happiest.” And the family is happy at Cordillera Ranch as well. Richele adds, “I have appreciated the friendships we’ve made here. The people that were here when we got here were all similarly oriented. The kids and their relationships have been tremendous. I love the club as well. The facilities are tremendous and we have totally enjoyed every minute of being here.” So with their travels, and the kids that are now 15, 17, 20, and 33, the Postons are in a wonderful position to truly enjoy the adventures that they have laid out before themselves. As Richele laughs and nods her head, Bill finishes, “Who knows what adventure we’ll be on next. I can’t sit still. If I spend 10 minutes on the beach on vacation, I’m ready to do something else.”

OUTDOORS

by Shane Reynolds Outdoor Recreation Director The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch People often ask me what I enjoy about working at Cordillera Ranch in the outdoor recreation areas. My first response is always the wonderful members we have on the ranch, and one thing I most enjoy about our members is their conservative outlook and their appreciation of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. The spectacular Texas Hill Country and premier location of Cordillera Ranch makes our Gun Club and Sporting Clays Course one of the most beautiful in Texas. The sporting clay course offers a variety of shooting scenarios and target presentations, and offers instruction, practice, or competition. The course is designed for either walking or for cart use. In addition to our ten station sporting clays course, we offer a wobble trap station with five shooting positions, a handgun range and rifle range. We are also in the design stages of adding a 3-D archery range. Teaching people about gun safety and how to shoot are both important aspects of what we offer at our gun club. We offer members and their guest opportunities to learn to shoot shotguns, personal safety classes using handguns, help people scope in rifles and offer the Texas Concealed Handgun License course. Just as important to us as safety is protecting the environment, therefore prior to designing and opening our gun club in 2007 we developed a comprehensive Environmental Stewardship and Management Plan. We have a traditional 10-station Sporting Clays course where targets are launched in a variety of ways approximating a different hunting scenario at each station. Shooters rotate through ten different stations, and clays of varying size are used, approximating the different sizes of birds and targets found in hunting. The course is a great training tool for shooters who enjoy wing shooting. Sporting Clays are offered year-round. A trapper accompanies every squad of shooters that enters the course to ensure safety and appropriate operation of the traps for consistency of targets. The course features novice-friendly targets since the fun is in breaking targets, not missing them. For competition shoots, the traps are adjusted to separate the great from the good shooters. In addition to sporting clays, we offer a beautiful wobble trap station that offers some fun targets that spring out of the oscillating trap in a direction unknown to the shooter. Cordillera Ranch maintains a network of local shooting instructors for beginning to advanced shooters. If you need some instruction before beginning your next hunting trip, are interested in learning some advanced self-defense handgun techniques, or if maybe you’d like to learn to shoot your rifle off shooting sticks, our friendly staff and instructors are there to help. Shooting sports are fun and economical when it comes to entertaining a large group of shooters. We offer packages for our members and their guest that can be developed for shooting events that include instruction, a competition course, prizes, meals, and beverages. For any questions about the Gun Club at Cordillera Ranch, don’t hesitate to contact me. Shane Reynolds Outdoor Recreation Director The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

DEVELOPER

DI LUSSO VILL AS Developing Before Our Eyes by Charlie Hill Di Lusso is evolving, much like a fine piece of art, with the next phase now being unveiled. But instead of one artist, or designer, Di Lusso is the collaboration of several “designers” working together to create a masterpiece. For the best possible outcome, the developer, architect, interior designer, builder and villa owner collaborate, each providing input from their perspective. The developer and engineers first develop a concept and lay out the homesites, streetscape, open space, and amenities. Soon thereafter, the architect, builder and interior designer merge ideas to complement the concept of the developer. Finally, the future owner provides the customization details that make the villa an extension of their lives. When Todd Hughes first stepped into Cordillera Ranch and hand-selected a lot overlooking the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that would eventually become his future villa, it was hard for him to imagine the bare piece of land – his blank canvas – transforming into a home. Stone by stone, stroke by stroke, Hughes and his team of designers have consolidated their visions and their talents to create Hughes’ meticulously planned villa… and so the masterpiece comes to life! Studying the Subject, Underpainting the Canvas As he stood on the hilltop overlooking the Cordillera Ranch Clubhouse and Guadalupe River Valley beyond, developer David Hill envisioned something unique. Today that vision is known as Di Lusso (Italian for “luxury”). The successful sellout of ridgeline and view lots in Di Lusso I has prompted the early development of Di Lusso II, with road and utility construction underway now. “The terraced landforms of Di Lusso provide tremendous opportunity for creating our hillside, Tuscan-themed village,” explains Hill. “However, those same landforms present unique challenges. We wanted to create special designs to protect the

44 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

views of existing villas, optimize views of future villas, and provide unique designs for our golf course and tennis frontage villas. We’re proud to have accomplished that with Roy Braswell of Braswell Architecture. Unobstructed views from virtually every lot, golf course and tennis frontage villa living, stunning streetscapes and the closest living possible to The Clubs are just a few of the features in our latest offering in this exclusive neighborhood,” Hill adds. Identifying the Big Shapes “Di Lusso II will continue with all of the amenities and comforts found in Di Lusso I, but will also incorporate new designs to complement the unique nature of the topography,” reveals Roy Braswell. “Old world design including gabled roofs, private courtyards and outdoor galleries; imported materials and construction methods; and a continuance of clean, timeless, authentic lines allow the blending of living in the old world with the functionality of today’s.” Braswell has designed some of the San Antonio area’s most prestigious homes. “We’re excited to be involved with Cordillera Ranch and Di Lusso. Tuscany and the Texas Hill Country have a lot of visual similarities and we’re happy to complement the existing villa floor plans with our creations,” comments Braswell. “These new designs required that ‘form follow function’ due to the unique terracing of the hillside. However, we never lost sight of the underlying need to maximize views and golf course-frontage opportunities. It was also important to us that attractive structures be viewed from the golf course and surrounding areas,” he adds. “Our designs seamlessly incorporate the existing architectural elements, materials and streetscape that have made Di Lusso so popular.” The Value Study Gabe Garcia leads the Pasadera Builders team that is the exclusive builder of the Di Lusso villas. “With Braswell Architecture, we were able to maintain the architectural integ-

rity created in Di Lusso I, utilize the views to their maximum potential and design spectacular floor plans that everyone can enjoy as a home,” explains Garcia. “In addition, it was important to incorporate unique elements into those designs that added to the ambiance and privacy of the villas, but didn’t add to the bottom line. I ultimately have to look at costs. Braswell added tremendous value without increasing expense. “The main living areas of the villas enjoy not just the exterior views but also an indoor/ outdoor living experience. The design is not a typical floor plan. The interior spaces are uniquely designed to fit the lifestyle of each villa resident,” adds Garcia. “In designing the first Di Lusso II villa for Todd Hughes, we took the plan and incorporated all the design requests that were special to Mr. Hughes, like his desire to live both inside and outside concurrently. We accomplished this through architecturally accurate windows and doors that brought the outside in from multiple areas of the home.” Garcia further explains, “It was also important to Mr. Hughes that spaces for guests were made for them to feel at home versus just visiting. Also, paramount is a functional kitchen that speaks of the resident and not of an attempt to feign architectural details. Braswell is a master at ‘authentic.’ He shies away from contrived. Mr. Hughes asked for a timeless interior style, so we created a plan from the design team (which includes Mr. Hughes) that meets that requirement.” The Color Block-In “As an Interior Designer it’s important for me to collaborate with Pasadera Builders and Braswell Architecture to first and foremost make sure the floor plan suits the client’s needs,” says Nicole Roberts Winmill of NR Interiors. “Then, I suggest the necessary changes to personalize the home for the homeowner and ensure the architecture will be consistent with the overall desired aesthetics of the home.

“I enjoy being involved with clients in the design of their home from the very start of architectural plans. This enables me to fully customize the home to meet all client needs, from space requirements to incorporating unique design elements that complement their lifestyle and design goals,” Roberts Winmill adds. “Interior design doesn’t start with the furnishings. Seeing the previously built villas also gives me a great level of comfort with the construction process and finished product since I’ll still be residing in Austin and unable to be on-site while my villa is being built.” Eager to start, Hughes contracted with Pasadera Builders for the construction of the first villa in Di Lusso II. “In visiting

COLLAGE DAZE Of all the memorable times in one’s life, few may be more memorable than the starting of another school year. Can you remember your first day of grade school? Junior High? Were you a blossoming flower your freshman year of high school? Maybe the BMOC (Big Man on Campus) by the end of those four years? Those memories may be pushed a little deeper into the recesses of our minds, but it’s hard not to remember the college years. As the “back to school” season is upon us, we reached out to you in hopes that you’d share a little about those formative years that helped you hone your abilities into what you desired to be, what you ultimately became. So take a deep breath, pull out your #2 pencils and take good notes about your peers who were candid enough to share info about where they went, why they went there and what their experiences were before life brought them to the ultimate playground on the campus of Cordillera Ranch!

CL U BS TH E By Jewel Bowers, Yoga Instructor & Shane Reynolds, Director of Recreation The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch With the return of a Yoga program at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, we’d like to give our members and readers a bit more information behind this beneficial form of exercise. Yoga has been studied for over 5000 years and can be dated back to an advanced civilization in ancient India. It is now practiced in nearly every country in the world. Yoga migrated to the United States in the 1800’s and has been proven to promote wellness and healing within the body. Scientists have been intrigued at the effects of yoga on the body and brain. Studies have found yoga to be beneficial not only for strength and flexibility, but for lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well as enhancing the immune function. One of yoga’s most known health benefits is the reduction of stress. (Yoga Journal: The Scientific Basis of Yoga Therapy by Timothy McCall, M.D.) Stress levels have been documented as one of the leading causes for a multitude of degenerative diseases. Yoga provides a comprehensive approach on overall wellness and effectively lowers stress. Yoga’s main goal is to focus on the mind-body connection and calming the mind through focus and breathing. The mind is a powerful ally or our worst enemy. If there is no physical well-being it is challenging to maintain a clear mind and perform at peak levels. After time this performance declines and deteriorates. With yoga you can begin to reverse the clock and see benefits rather quickly. Lowering stress levels also paves way for shedding pounds. Lowered stress levels decreases production of stress hormones that store body fat. The low impact stretching and isometric poses in yoga provides a great alternative. Who should take yoga and how often? Anyone that breathes could benefit from the practice of yoga. Yoga is an individual journey and there is no competition. Yoga is a practice and it is a science. The more you practice the more flexibility and strength will be gained. The daily buildup of stress and your environment is easier to maintain if done on a regular basis. Imagine the spine and the daily effects of stress, gravity and cluttered mind. Yoga will help chip off the buildup and begin to heal and regenerate the body from within. The Yoga program at Cordillera Ranch will evolve into some specific areas to target our members’ interest. We’ll soon develop some yoga specific classes for golfers and tennis players alike. In golf, the power of your swing starts from the ground up. This means that all the curls in the world won’t help you hit longer drives or swing fewer strokes. So if you want to be stronger on

52 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

the links, drop the weights and get on the yoga mat. “Swing power is generated from the lower body to the hips, the trunk, the shoulders, the arms, and out to the club,” says Katherine Roberts, founder of Yoga for Golfers and fitness expert for the Golf channel. “A lot of yoga postures are very good at getting deep into the connective tissue and musculature of the hips. The hips initiate the downswing, so having mobility in the hips and strong glutes is really critical for generating power.” What do tennis elbow, sore back, weak footwork and inability to maintain good focus have in common? All of these tennis-related issues can be prevented and remedied by yoga practice. As more and more world-class tennis players are taking up yoga to improve their stretching, strength and breathing, perhaps so should you. Yoga practice can improve your game on many levels, most notably working on your flexibility, power, balance, injury prevention and mind control. For questions about the Yoga program at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, please contact Jewel Bowers at jewel.bowers@yahoo.com.

MEDIA ROOMS

Robert Thornton This media room, in Cordillera Ranch, won the Level IV Gold Technical Design Award for Home Theater in CEDIA’s (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) 2012 Electronic Lifestyles® Awards competition, a national competition. The renowned Anthony Grimani and Performance Media Industries (PMI) of Novato, California, provided all design and engineering, with Sterling Technologies and Robert S. Thornton - Great Homes executing the highly detailed installation and assembly of sound isolation, acoustics, control, video and audio systems. The objective was to deliver the best possible image and acoustics the client had ever experienced with minimal compromise, and within a defined budget. During an initial meeting with the owner he stated “I’m not looking for popcorn machines or spider man hanging from the ceiling - I want to watch a movie loudly enough to make my ears bleed…while my wife sleeps in the bedroom on the other side of the wall.” During two days of extensive fine tuning and calibration at completion, the room was tested at volumes far louder than deemed appropriate or comfortable, and it could literally not be heard in the adjacent master bedroom – exactly what the client asked for a year and half earlier. It was, in the words of Tony Grimani, one of the “best sounding rooms he’s been in - even those that are multiples times the cost”. These photos reveal the elaborate construction behind the walls and ceilings as Sterling Technologies associates finish their final detailing, and a group of enthusiasts after completion with acoustic fabrics.

SIGNATURE VACATIONS

BEHIND THE VINES Wine and dining through Napa and Carneros

“Behind the Vines” - wining and dining our way through Napa and Carneros was the theme of our second annual Cordillera Ranch Cellar Club wine trip! Launched last year, the Club boasts over 100 Cellar Club Members of which 23 wine-loving aficionados embraced five days of exclusive behind-the scenes wine tasting, fine dining and vintner education. Hosted and put together by Jeff Cohen, Cordillera’s own wine expert, and Debbie Pepper, Director of Membership (and unofficial Wine Tour Operator), the trip featured exclusive boutique wineries and vineyards, many of which are not open to the public. Leaving from San Francisco on Sunday morning, the group arrived in Napa at noon to begin our trip with a wonderful welcome lunch and tasting among the lovely flowering gardens at Swanson Vineyards. Our gracious hosts, Clark and Elizabeth Swanson, added a very special personal touch by dining with us and serving a delicious lunch, wonderful wines and making us feel like welcome friends! Later that evening, our evening reception dinner at Groezinger Estate at the Villagio Inn & Spa began with champagne sabering before dinner and more wine. For four consecutive days thereafter we toured three to four wineries/vineyards per day with stops for a three course lunch daily and fabulous dinners by night.

62 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Monday’s schedule highlighted wineries specializing in Napa Valley Sauvignon Blancs and Cabernets at Honig Vineyard & Winery in Rutherford, Phifer Pavitt in Calistoga, and an amazing cave tour and tasting at Hourglass where we viewed an interesting display of area vineyard terroir highlighting the different soil types of various varietals and vineyards. Highlighting the day’s dining experience was a truly fabulous several course catered lunch on the picnic grounds of Alpha Omega where we also tasted fabulous wines accompanying each course – definitely a memorable group favorite for sure! After a very long day of tasting great wines we stopped in St. Helena for Italian fare and pizza on the outside garden of La TraVigne Pizzeria before collapsing at our hotel that evening. Tuesday’s trip included our trip highlight visit to Morlet Family Vineyards in St. Helena hosted by gracious owners Luc and Jodie Morlet. Luc Morlet, hailing from a fourth generation French winemaking family, wowed our group with his meticulous presentation and tour of their impressive and lovingly restored winery dating back to the 1800s. Luc’s years of knowledge of taking old world principles and adapting them to California, truly epitomizes the “Morlet style” resulting in a beautiful balance of wines which are harmonious in their intensity, richness,

complexity and refinement! Hard to follow, yet very special in it’s own right, we headed to another wonderful lunch and wine tasting of Palazzo wines on the lawn of owner, Scott Palazzo’s private residence. Scott’s engaging and energetic passion for his wines made for a thoroughly lively and fun experience, not to mention another four course delicious lunch with perfectly paired wines. Our last stop of the day was a vineyard tour at Salvestrin where we sampled deliciously tempting appetizers and sweets paired with wonderful wines. Our day ended with a quick two-hour stop at our hotel before heading out again for a six course gourmet dinner and wine pairing at the elegant Auberge du Soleil with a sunset champagne toast to start the evening. After three days of fabulous wines and food, Wednesday was a welcome “free day” after a late morning wine tasting at Hill Family Estates followed by lunch at Redd. After lunch, everyone went their separate ways enjoying either golf, hot air balloons, spa, shopping, resting and yes….believe it or not…some went for three more wine tastings! Our final day on Thursday we headed for Pinot Noir country in Carneros with a truly delightful visit to Truchard Estate Vineyards hosted by our charming hosts/ owners Jo Ann and Tony Truchard, native

E TH BS U CL

Texans growing up near LaGrange. While tasting their delicious wines, Jo Ann shared the wonderful story of how they became vineyard owners and eventually acquired 400 acres selling their grapes to more than 20 premiere Napa Valley wineries in addition to their own very special estate wines. Jo Ann gave us a very personal vineyard tour along with a tour of their amazing 10,500 square foot wine cave. Our next stop was another lively and engaging vineyard tour at Bouchaine Vineyards where Greg Gautier, Vice President of Wine Production and Sales for Bouchaine, as well as owner of Gauthier Select Vineyards, treated us to several barrel tastings allowing us to experience wines before and after blending for a uniquely interesting and educational tour. Walking through the vineyards, we examined leaves of different varietals and growing techniques and had another interesting perspective on the nuances of all aspects of winemaking. Our tour ended with another delicious catered lunch as we tasted delicious Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs from both Bouchaine and Greg’s own select vineyard. Last but certainly not least, we ended our day at Palmaz Vineyards where winemaking and aging takes place within the living rock of Mount George, in a flawlessly engineered maze of tunnels and lofty domes. The height of the wine cave is equivalent to an 18-story building, providing the vertical range needed for true gravity-flow winemaking. This gentle treatment allows the finest nuances of flavor to develop naturally – the result is a complex, elegant wine. After touring, we ended our day tasting the unique “hand-made” quality and rare elegance of Palmaz’ signature magnificent reds in the heart of the domed-cave. Very special wines appropriate for a special ending to our last wine destination. Our farewell dinner at Press, a favorite destination from last year’s trip, was held under the stars on the terrace. We toasted a memorable week of fabulous wines, lunches and dinners in settings as special as their menus, personal and engaging tours with vineyard owners and viticulture education, and most importantly, newfound camaraderie laced with

unforgettable fun, laughter and group bus sing-alongs featuring our own Cordillera rendition of “YMCA”! Hope you join us next year for another fabulous trip and a new wine destination!

As a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Chet Hawkins posses the highest level of education recognized for a dentist. As a graduate of the Pankey Instituted, he’s had the finest postdoctoral training in the world. “I want to establish a master plan and then develop a blueprint for my patients’ long-term care,” he explains. “We want to solve the causes of the problems before we do anything else to their teeth. The Two Kinds of Money There are two kinds of money:

The kind that runs out and the kind that doesn’t. The first we call investments. The second we call wealth. Wealth lasts beyond one generation and is like a river. The senior generation doesn’t own the river. They are merely its stewards, drawing from it, certainly, but preserving it for the next generation. Wealth managers help their clients preserve the river. As the younger generation develops its own goals and dreams, you want the river to be wide and deep. You want it to help your children make their own way in the world, but not weaken them.

We are fee-only, CPA wealth managers. We help our client families extend the flow of their river. And we do it with independence, commitment, transparency, and trust. If you need someone to lead a coordinated effort to nurture your river, and to do it with distinction, we’re ready.
