WELCOME

O

Over the years of producing Cordillera Ranch Living, we have been able to explore some fascinating people and stories. However, I don’t think we’ve ever had a feature article that better epitomizes the lifestyle available at Cordillera Ranch than this cover issue. Though it may appear to be some setup marketing stunt by Cordillera to showcase The Clubs and community amenities, the best part about it is that these adventurous ladies came up with their “Cordillerathon” on their own. They just let us all in for a little bit of the ride (without any of the sweat). From horseback riding to kayaking and golf (and much more in between that I won’t spoil), they covered the gamut of activities all in one day. As The Club and community have grown, it’s been rewarding to see members and residents take advantage of all that Cordillera Ranch and the Texas Hill Country have to offer. Hopefully, this Cordillerathon inspires you to tackle some of these outdoor pursuits yourself — you just don’t have to try to accomplish them all in one day!

Friends, Club activities and a day-long competition, the Cordillerathon was an experience unlike any other at Cordillera Ranch. The event, held on the summer solstice to maximize daylight hours, was the brainchild of resident and Club member Jill Hurd.

Hurd, who moved to Cordillera Ranch from West University in Houston in 2015, explains, “I love everything outdoors, and I wanted to create the ultimate outdoor day for me and my friends. I thought it would be fun and challenging to see if all seven resort Clubs could be used in one day. As she planned it, the Cordillerathon consisted of seven clubs each providing an activity: a trail ride, handgun shooting, kayaking down the Guadalupe, bench pressing 50 pounds as many times as possible, playing nine holes of golf and a set of tennis, and swimming a medley relay. “There were a lot of moving parts to this event, so we started small, with a group no larger than eight. I talked to the most likely suspects among my friends, starting with women who don’t mind dirt, sweat and getting their hair wet. I got a fair number of no’s for a variety of reasons. Most, rightly, thought it sounded exhausting. Then there were vacations and work schedules to accommodate.” Ultimately, in addition to Hurd, the group consisted of Club members Jill Briggs, Michelle Hobbs, Linda Koetting, Bobbie Sanborn, Debbie Williams, Cyndi Walwick and guest Brook Harris who took the place of someone unable to participate. The entire group are avid tennis players and all but two of the women would, through their event participation, have had the opportunity to do things they hadn’t done previously at The Club.

36 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

Outfitted in t-shirts proclaiming “Consider this Diem Carped” and a Cordillerathon 2017 label that Hurd’s tennis team captain and good friend, Melody Abrahamian, created on the back, the women started their day at the Equestrian Center before dividing into two teams that rotated on the hour. Four went on a trail ride while the other half headed to the gun range. The groups then switched activities and some came prepared, says Hurd, “The Club provided handguns and ammo, but three of these good Texas women brought their own.” The teams reunited and headed to the beautiful tree-lined Guadalupe River for an hour of kayaking. “No one got seriously soaked in the kayaking event!” says Hurd.

After a morning full of activity, the women enjoyed a refreshing lunch at the new Outfitter Center. Replenished and rested, they made their way to the Fitness Center for the bench press and cardio challenges. The group collectively lifted an impressive 7,500 pounds, having Hurd consider setting the goal for 10,000 next year. Following their success in the gym, they headed to the Golf Club. “We are atrocious golfers, but our Group 1 scramble group (Linda Koetting, Jill Briggs, Brook Harris and Jill Hurd) still scored a 41 (5 over par) on 9 holes with very little cheating,” reports Hurd. It was ‘unclear’ exactly what happened to Group 2 (Michelle Hobbs, Debbie Williams, Cyndi Walwick and Bobbie Sanborn). Rumor has it, they were most grateful when Phil greeted them with citrus-scented, iced towels. With so many avid tennis players in the group, it was game on at the Tennis Club, followed by a fast swim medley relay in the cool waters of The Club’s competition-style pool, before celebratory cocktails at the Vista Pool. Later, the victorious women joined their husbands for an evening dinner and awards ceremony at The Clubhouse. Hurd, recaps, “Everyone received a jar of lavender Epsom salts and an ‘award’ during our post event dinner. My favorite awards were

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 37

the Unsinkable Molly Brown Award to Debbie Williams who had a bit of kayak trouble but persevered, and the Caitlyn Jenner Surprisingly Strong Woman Award, which went to slender Michelle Hobbs who still ripped off 25 quick bench presses.” The evening’s festivities were marked with a visit by Monty Becton, General Manager of The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, who honored the group with celebratory champagne. “I had the

38 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

pleasure of spending time with the ladies during their dinner on the patio. I was amazed at the energy and enthusiasm they had reflecting on the time they spent together. Several of them mentioned this gave them the opportunity to experience areas of The Club they hadn’t been exposed to before and how much they enjoyed it. I applaud Jill for thinking outside of the box and for having the passion for putting this event together. It’s obvi-

ous that she enjoys her time around the various amenities here at The Club. I hope her passion is contagious and that this event grows next year,” said Becton. The repose allowed the women to reflect on the day. Harris summarized, “It was a day well spent with good company, outside in a beautiful place, and lots of fun exercise.” Koetting said, “I participated in the event because of my friendship with

the girls and Jill Hurd’s enthusiasm. It was a really fun event.” Williams agreed, adding, “I’m so grateful that Jill Hurd came up with the idea for the Cordillerathon. I was able to enjoy the entire Clubs of Cordillera Ranch with a great group of ladies. Otherwise, outside of golf and tennis, I may have not experienced some of the activities that are offered at The Clubs. Likewise for Briggs, it was a time of discovery, ”Because of our

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 39

travel schedules, we have been slow to get going with The Clubs, which is one of the reasons I loved the idea of Cordillerathon.” Hurd says she and husband Charlie love the amenities of The Clubs, “That’s why we bought property here. Nevertheless, I never dreamed that through these various resort clubs I would meet so many wonderful friends and have so much fun here. The Cordillerathon was a celebration of the amazing life we lead. It really is heaven on earth here. All of us had the time of our lives. We entered and exited laughing, and our already good friendships have deepened. Some of us are now attempting golf together, and we have organized a stand-up paddle boarding day. I hope Cordillerathon inspires everyone to make use of The Clubs and make friends.” Koetting underscores that thought, “No one took much of it very seriously! Jill wanted it to be a fun day with friends and that it was. I went home laughing about the day’s events and slept very well that night! I look forward to doing it again next year.” Hurd credits Shane Reynolds, Cordillera Ranch Director of

40 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

Recreation, for his invaluable assistance in coordinating the Cordillerathon. “His suggestions for the timing of events, having lunch at the Outfitters Center, and the after event dinner were all perfect.” It was a great experience, says Reynolds, “When Jill Hurd contacted me about this event, I was thrilled to meet with her and help plan the special day for her group. Incorporating the entire lifestyle that Cordillera Ranch offers into one full day of activity is something we’ve only done a handful of times for groups over the past decade, and Jill’s group was the first group of women that wanted to tackle the challenge. From sunrise to sunset, they were up for the challenge and it was our pleasure to help them enjoy the day and all the activities the ranch has to offer. Days like this are what lead us all to remember that life is truly better out here!” As for Cordillerathon 2018, plans are already in the works says Hurd, “I plan to do this again next year, although I hope to do sporting clays instead of handguns. I may also shorten the golf to show mercy both to my tennis-only buddies and to the grounds of the Cordillera golf course.”

The Women of

Cordillerathon 2017 Each woman applauded Jill Hurd’s efforts, enjoying the comradery and getting to know the amenities of The Club better, as stated in their testimonials of the day and their lives on the ranch. Michelle Hobbs and her husband Robert found their way to Cordillera Ranch while thinking ahead. “We were in San Antonio at a convention and decided to look at properties with a possibility for retirement in the distant future. We immediately fell in love with the lot we were shown and started coming to Cordillera Ranch so frequently that it made sense to go ahead and build.” After purchasing a lot in 2008 and building in 2011, Michelle moved to Cordillera Ranch full time in 2015 with Robert joining in 2016. “Cordillera Ranch allows us to feel like we are living in the country but with a lot of the conveniences of living in a city. We also enjoy the ease of driving into San Antonio for

a special night out.” Michelle partakes fully in Club amenities with tennis , biking, running the trails with her dog and kayaking while Robert plays golf several times a week and enjoys the Men’s Club. “It was very important to my husband that we had a world-class golf course and it was important to me that we had a private natural setting for our home. In the years we lived in Houston with our busy work lives, we never had the sense of community that we have enjoyed at Cordillera Ranch. We have forged wonderful new friendships here and are constantly meeting new people. There is a real sense of community at Cordillera Ranch.” Debbie Williams and husband Kirk moved to Cordillera Ranch in 1999 after his job transferred him from Michigan to San Antonio. Seeking something familiar, Williams says, “We lived on wooded acreage in Michigan and we were hoping to find something similar outside of San Antonio. The moment we drove through the gates of Cordillera Ranch and saw the beautiful Hill Country views with an extraordinarily well-maintained property, we knew we had found our home. There were approximately

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 41

30 houses back then so we have seen major changes and have been amazed by how well managed the growth of the ranch has been. It’s been a fantastic place to raise our three children. People in the community are welcoming and we enjoy the diverse backgrounds and interests of our neighbors.” Cyndi Walwick, with her husband Sean and their sons, moved to the ranch about a year and a half ago from California. “I found the ranch through Jill Briggs who had moved here the year before. When she came back to visit us in California, she told us about how great the community was. We came to visit and fell in love with it as many others have before us. We haven’t been disappointed with our decision. Besides tennis, I also enjoy attending exercise classes taught by AK, with some personal training from her as well. She is extremely kind on top of being very knowledgeable. My husband and sons enjoy the outdoor activities including the fishing, gun club and archery. Most of the people I have met have been through tennis and have been very friendly and welcoming, and we have also met people at wine dinners hosted on the ranch. I don’t think we could have found a better place to live to suit our needs and desires.” Jill Briggs and her husband Michael lived in Colorado for a long time before spending a few years on the Central Coast of California and finally moving to Cordillera Ranch in 2015. “We travel a lot for our work, which allows us to live anywhere within a reasonable drive to an airport. One of the main things that brought us to Cordillera was The Clubs. I play tennis (more than some may think reasonable), but I also love the classes at the gym, when I can fit them in. We spend a lot of time at

42 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

the river and are anxious to do more on it! An early swim is always on my list, along with dining at The Club. After we get home from a six-week tour, we love being able to enjoy the Hill Country with such ease. We could do all the things we do off the ranch, but The Clubs make it easy and convenient. Everything is right out our door!” Linda Koetting and husband Mike have been Club members for almost three years. “My husband plays golf and I play tennis but I hope to start playing some golf as well. We love The Club because of the service, amenities and its beauty. Everyone I have met has been welcoming and very friendly. Marc DeWall, the golf pro, exemplifies The Clubs’ professionalism and drive for excellence.” Bobbie Sanborn and husband Keith relocated from Houston to Boerne in 2015 to expand their business. “We chose Cordillera for its unique qualities. It was the perfect mix of privacy due to the large lots while offering the ability to socialize with others at The Club or while enjoying many of the other activities on the ranch. We feel fortunate to have a Club with such great amenities, catering to many different interests and with top notch employees who provide first-class service. In addition to tennis, we both utilize the fitness center, attend wine dinners and eat at The Club frequently. We have used the gun range and kayaked on the Guadalupe. We enjoy spending time outdoors admiring the beautiful Hill Country views and we often walk our two Weimaraners on the nature trails. We have had the pleasure of meeting some of the friendliest and most interesting people in Cordillera Ranch.”

STAFF PROFILE

Jess Fanelle, CPA Controller & Director of Human Resources 830.336.9152 jfanelle@cordilleraranch.com Hometown: Seoul, South Korea

How did you become employed at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch? I was approached by Monty Becton, our General Manager, when the position became available. While he was searching for the controller candidate, my profile came up. He realized that we met when I was working as a controller at Oak Hills Country Club. When he approached me for the position, I couldn’t have been happier. What past work history prepared you for The Clubs? I went to Cesar Ritz Colleges in Switzerland for International Hospitality Management. Afterwards, I was a management trainee at the Park Hyatt Chicago and it was there that I became more interested in the accounting department. I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in Hospitality Management at Hilton College, University of Houston with an emphasis on accounting and finance. I have worked at the Warwick Hotel in Houston and became a controller at Forest Club in Houston. Then, Oak Hills Country Club brought me to San Antonio where I was a Controller/Director of HR for almost nine years. Other jobs include the Hilton San Antonio Hill Country Hotel and Spa, A’GACI headquarters (retail) and Rackspace. However, my heart belongs to the hospitality industry and I was waiting for the right company to come up. What makes your colleagues an asset to The Clubs? The Accounting/Human Resources department works very closely both with internal members (staff) and external members (our Club members). My staff keeps The Club in check and plays a very important role in creating a wonderful

44 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

work environment at The Club. In order to work together well, I try to engage and communicate with them as much as possible at every different level.

What do you like most about working at Cordillera Ranch? It’s the most beautiful club with such a wonderful staff.

What has been your most rewarding professional experience? I strongly feel that working here at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch will be it.

What are your hobbies and interests? I love travelling with my family. I promised my son that we, as a family, will hit all 50 states!

What has been your greatest professional challenge? I find handling employee-related matters very challenging as the laws and regulations are constantly changing and evolving. The only way to overcome this is to keep learning and being familiarized with them.

Favorite quote or motto? Your future hasn’t been written yet. No one’s has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.

PEARL PLACE A

Of A

By Julie Catalano :: Photography courtesy of The Pearl District

The phrase “something for everybody” is vastly overused, but it perfectly describes this hip, historic hotspot in San Antonio loved by locals and tourists alike. Next to the famed River Walk and the venerable Alamo, the Pearl District has become a must-see on any respectable tour of the Alamo City. And with very good reason: The 22-acre mixed use live/work/play space just north of downtown on Broadway boasts 19 restaurants, 15 retailers, a luxury boutique hotel, weekend farmers market, food hall, amphitheater, park space aplenty and a happy vibe that says all are welcome. That vibe is no accident, says Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer of the Pearl, who compares the new life of the former Pearl Brewery site to Old World town squares. “If you think about cities in Europe or Latin America, the plazas are beautiful places, public gathering places.” They also cater to a variety of tastes and budgets. “You can sit on a bench and have a churro and coffee or spend $100 on dinner.”

The brewery itself has a rich and layered history, beginning with its founding in 1883 as the City Brewery, renamed the San Antonio Brewing Association, and eventually taking its name in 1952 from its signature product — Pearl Beer, a frothy brew that first showed up in Texas tap rooms in 1887. German-born Otto Koehler became president of the brewery in 1902, taking it from micro-brewery to major player. But it was Koehler’s wife Emma who really kicked it up a notch after Otto’s death, increasing production from 6,000 barrels to 110,000 a year, making it the largest brewery in Texas by 1916. Not even Prohibition in 1919 deterred Emma, who produced the near beer “La Perla,” started bottling soft drinks, and successfully diversified the business to ride out the storm. Minutes after Prohibition ended on September 15, 1933, 100 beer-laden

trucks and 25 railroad boxcars rolled off the site. Emma weathered the Great Depression and the start of WWII, led the brewery until 1940, and died in1943 at age 85. Numerous highs and lows followed — in the industry, the economy and in management — and the brewery barely survived the millennium. Pearl Brewery ceased production and moved out in 2001. The property was essentially abandoned until 2002, when Silver Ventures acquired it. “The first couple of years was a process of taking stock and categorizing all of the historic equipment and ephemera,” says Fauerso, along with working closely with the city as the River Walk expansion to the Museum Reach was developed. Growing steadily in size and popularity since then, “The Pearl is all about transforming the culinary landscape of San Antonio,” says Fauerso, “re-energizing and bringing back to life a historic neighborhood.”

Now, River Taxis ferry visitors from downtown to the Pearl, meandering past landmarks like the San Antonio Museum of Art and going through the very cool lock and dam system like a mini Panama Canal. Passengers disembark at the steps near Chef Johnny Hernandez’s La Gloria Ice House restaurant and the amphitheater. From there, information boards tell visitors where they are, and paper maps are available at the shops or cafes. In a district chock full of history and happenings, here are just a few highlights:

Pearl Stable This was the Pearl’s first historic renovation project and the original home of the brewery’s draft horses — heavy build warmbloods from northern Europe — that pulled the beer delivery wagons in the late 1800s. The painstaking restoration involved taking the structure back to its roots — stripping away layers of paint, revealing the original vaulted wood ceiling, and preserving the foundation. Now a luxe

Built on the site of the original burnt out bottling department, “we wanted to bring back this beautiful historic space because it was part of the original Pearl footprint.” Now a home for six exciting, emerging operators on a short lease simple fee structure, “it allows new energy into the food scene and inculcates an entrepreneurial pipeline in this growing community of restaurants here.” Casual fare includes burgers, donuts, ramen, sustainable, southern comfort food, and a beer and wine bar. “The Food Hall encourages diners to try something new,” says Fauerso, “and then spend time in the park, with food, family and live music. People spend hours and hours here.” www.bottlingdept.com

Started in 2009, this fresh air market draws 3,000-5,000 shoppers each weekend looking for everything from soup (ingredients) to nuts. “Freshly grown products come from a 150-mile radius,” says manager Nancy Fitch. “That’s part of the sustainable promise that we make, that our vendors are certified producers only,” meaning no resellers allowed. COURSE UPDATE

SEASONS on the By Mark Semm

COURSE

It seems just yesterday school was letting out and summer vacations began. In the blink of an eye, summer is winding down and so is another summer season on the golf course. It’s a good time to look back to reflect on what the staff accomplished and what we are gearing up for. Summer is always a busy time of year throughout the course with regular maintenance. Countless man hours of mowing, trimming, edging and keeping greens thriving is the norm. Mother Nature continues to have us on our toes from last year’s floods to this year’s drought (although we did just receive 1.50 inches just a few days ago as I write). Over the past few years we’ve completed several capital projects on the golf course, and 2017 was no different. We sodded approximately 36,000-square-feet of Bermuda rough, replaced 8,000-square-feet of contaminated zoysia throughout #15 fairway, sodded 24,000-square-feet of zoysia throughout the range floor, and built an 8,000-square-foot zoysia nursery behind the shop. The developer continues to reinvest capital not only on the course but throughout The Club as well. Our focus now shifts to the fall golf season and tournaments. Hopefully we’ve had a few crisp mornings on the course as you are reading this, even though September can still be brutal in Texas. As the shorter days and cooler nights return we will begin pushing the bentgrass greens in preparation for fall tourna-

ments. More rolling, brushing, brooming and topdressing as the weather allows will help speed and firm them up heading into the fall. I cannot thank our entire staff enough for the blood, sweat and sometimes tears getting through another summer. We all look forward to the fall and the shift in maintenance focus it brings for the fall golf season! Mark Semm is the Director of Agronomy at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. SPECIAL EVENTS

WE COORDINATE,

YOU CELEBRATE By Amanda Parinella

60 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

Planning a special event can be as enjoyable as the party — the journey to your destination — if you’re working with the talented and capable staff at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. It’s no secret that Cordillera Ranch is a special place to live, and celebrations centered around the natural beauty and unique features of the property become exceptional events with one-ofa-kind experiences reflecting each individual client’s personality. Engage your guests in an event customized from every thoughtful detail down to each bite of a perfectly paired food and wine dinner or themed event. Whether your gathering is a grand affair or an intimate dinner party, an office luncheon or other private event, Cordillera Ranch is the perfect venue.

TROFA/WEDEL WEDDING Photography by Michelle Jones Photography The Trofa’s daughter, Kristen, decided to have her picture perfect wedding at The Club. Mother of the bride, Gretchen Trofa, couldn’t have been more pleased. “We hosted the wedding of our oldest daughter at Cordillera Ranch this past April and it couldn’t have turned out more spectacular. Even a few rain drops didn’t mar the beautiful views of the Hill Country. We have the Private Events Coordinator, Amanda Parinella, to thank for pulling it all together. As our main contact at The Club, she was responsible for coordinating the florist, food and rentals to make the event go off without a hitch. We held the ceremony in front of the small adult pool overlooking an amazing vista. With the help of the staff, we were able to erect a beautiful flowered arbor to frame the wedding couple as they said their vows. After the wedding, a mariachi band led the guests over to the terraces outside The Clubhouse where we feasted on an amazing array of seafood and other appetizers, gazing at more beautiful views. Guests are still talking about the four-foot ice sculpture that Amanda arranged, surrounded by lobster, crab and other shellfish. The size of our wedding pushed the limits of the space, but Amanda creatively suggested various seating arrangements that made it all work.

The Club was very helpful with our various requests, including moving large pieces of furniture, hanging flowers from the chandeliers and working to provide AV equipment and other technical assistance. For dinner, we opted for stations on the terraces. This worked great and provided a nice flow for the guests without long, annoying lines. The food was simply amazing and Amanda was particularly helpful in getting us to hone in on our menu. At our tastings, we loved everything so it was very difficult to decide! The barbeque was to die for and really gave our out-of-town guests a taste of the Texas Hill Country. Amanda went the extra mile to bring in a sushi chef to accommodate the wishes of the groom. As the mother of the bride, I was hoping to ‘just get through it without any mishaps,’ however, because The Club had everything under control, I instead had an amazing time, was able to enjoy the party and thoroughly savor every element of the momentous occasion. I know that my daughter and my new son-in-law started their life together with a wedding that can’t be forgotten!”

ELY/BOHON WEDDING Photography by Jackie Willome Photography Avery Bohon’s father has been a member of The Club for years. Ever since she was young, she dreamed of having her wedding at Cordillera Ranch. Her dream came true. “The Clubhouse at Cordillera Ranch was the perfect setting for our Fall 2016 wedding. The Hill Country views set the tone for a romantic outdoor ceremony on the patio, and the reception area was the perfect space to eat, drink and dance all night. Once Andrew and I were engaged, I was anxious to start planning the perfect November wedding. We visited Cordillera for our first walk-through and started working with Amanda to begin coordinating all the details of our big day. Her attention to detail and patience with all my ideas and emails did not go unnoticed! The seamless planning process allowed me to relax and enjoy every moment of the day, including being able to see everything we had planned come to life, and see our guests enjoy themselves. We are so lucky to have had our wedding at Cordillera. The setting was beautiful, the food was outstanding and everyone we encountered was so genuine and helpful to not only us, but our family and friends. A year later, we still receive compliments from our guests on how wonderful the weekend was.”

DANIELS/TRACEY WEDDING Photography by Kelsey Grudle Diane Daniels-Tracey and Mike Tracey are both members of The Club. Being familiar with the level of quality Cordillera Ranch delivers, it was only natural that they chose the venue to host their wedding reception in April of 2017. “As we were entering a new chapter in our lives of marriage, we wanted the perfect event so we could celebrate with our family and friends, and we quickly decided that The Club was the perfect venue. From the planning stage to the night of the event, Amanda, Salvador, Chef Isaac and Kelsey were excellent with communication, listening to our wants, and offering suggestions. As we entered party day, we were so pleased that everything fell into place due to their excellent planning and attention to details. Chef Isaac’s team prepared food that was delicious and beautifully presented. The service from the wait staff was efficient, and Kelsey took fabulous photos of the celebration. Amanda and Salvador waved their magic wands and everything fell perfectly into place. They were so good, they even delivered perfect weather for patio partying! Our friends and family had a wonderful time celebrating with us. The evening made for wonderful memories to begin our marriage.”

WILLIAMS’ CHRISTMAS PARTY Joanne and Aldon Williams had a house warming celebration with their family and friends to welcome them to their new Cordillera Ranch home over the Christmas holidays. They were delighted with the results. “When we decided to host a holiday party in our new home, there was no question that we wanted to work with the experienced and professional event staff and culinary team at The Club. From our very first contact with Amanda, to planning the details and menu, to the final cleanup at the end of the party, every aspect was perfectly executed and exceeded our expectations! We wanted to have a lot of input in the menu and party itself, and Amanda, Sal and Chef Isaac were extremely flexible and open to working with us and receiving our input. We couldn’t have been more pleased on the day of the party when Chef Isaac and his team, along with Amanda, Sal and their team, came to set up and help us with the finishing touches. Chef impressively turned our garage into a full staging ‘back-of-thehouse’ kitchen and delighted our guests as he masterfully prepared the most amazing and delicious dishes right in our kitchen and on our outdoor grill. The quality and presentation of the food was superior. Our bartenders and servers were excellent, making everyone feel very comfortable. The team artfully staged food stations and bars around our home, making each area feel more intimate and accommodating to our guests. For us, it felt like it was on par and caliber of our own private wine dinner — only with 125 of our closest friends and neighbors! Kudos to Chef Isaac, Amanda, Salvador and their entire team! The party was perfect, our guests were impressed by the food and beverage service, and best of all, we were able to relax and enjoy our guests that evening. Like living at Cordillera, everything was ‘first class!’”

SANDERS’ CORPORATE OUTING When David Sander’s hosted a Corporate Event with his company at the Ranch, they utilized all seven of The Clubs and everyone was able to choose how they spent their day. “I contacted Monty about the possibility of a Pioneer Natural Resources Corporate spring event at Cordillera Ranch. I explained there would be 40 geoscientists, executives (including the CEO) and a few spouses. They organized a perfect day allowing guests to pick between golf, kayaking, sporting clays, tennis, horseback riding or shopping, followed by a great cocktail sunset and dinner in the Cabana Grill. I was so impressed with the staff’s organizational efficiency and great food that Gail and I followed up with having our son’s fall wedding at The Club. It, too, was perfect!” To celebrate your special occasion with The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, contact Amanda Parinella at 830.336.9176. WINE DINNER

HILLWFIAMILY E STATE N E DIN N ER “If you want to dream in color, drink wine.” Ryan Hill, Hill Family Estate Join us for an intimate dinner featuring special guest Ryan Hill of Hill Family Estate! Ryan will discuss the various flavor profiles while Chef Isaac Cantu crafts a custom menu to pair with these remarkable wines. After decades of farming grapes for some of Napa Valley’s finest wine producers, including Silver Oak, Insignia, Far Niente, Ramey and Duckhorn, Doug Hill and family decided to begin producing wines for their own label. In 2001, Hill Family Estate released their first vintage.

66 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

The Hill family began to select and plant their own vineyards in the 1980s, using their intimate knowledge of the multiple Napa Valley microclimates, soil variations and the many subtle growing factors which influence the characteristics of the grape and the resulting quality of wine. As growers and vintners, their goal is meticulous attention to vine growth and optimum fruit production, allowing each variety at each location to fully mature to its peak potential. The Hill family’s constant pursuit of excellence in vineyard management and winemaking allows them to produce wines which beautifully express the individuality and depth of character in each varietal. From the romance of the label to the time and dedication put into each bottle, the Hill family invites you to share their wine.

HILL FAMILY ESTATE WINEMAKER, ALISON DORAN

Winemaker Alison Doran joined the Hill Family Estate team and made the inaugural 2001 vintage. Alison was introduced to Doug while he was growing grapes and she was making wine for Lewis Cellars. Doug loved Alison’s style, personality and determination to produce the finest wines possible. Alison developed this skill

while being mentored by renowned wine expert Andre Tchelistcheff, completing a degree in winemaking from UC Davis and spending time in the legendary winery-filled region of Alsace, France. Today, Doug and Alison work closely together selecting the highest quality grapes and producing ultra-premium wines. The Hill Family Estate Wine Dinner will take place on Thursday, September 21, 2017 in the Cabana Dining Room. A Reception at 6:30pm is followed by Dinner at 7:00pm. For reservations, please contact The Club reception desk at 830.336.9000.

SAVE THE DATE FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY WINE EXPERIENCE! Shafer Wine Dinner Thursday, November 2, 2017 The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch welcomes Shafer Vineyards, a family-owned winery that crushed their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in 1978. The Shafer family moved from Hinsdale to the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley in 1972 to start a business in the California wine industry. Their first vintage, 1978 Shafer Cabernet (later named Hillside Select), won the San Francisco Vintners Club Cab taste-off, as well as first place in a 1993 German blind tasting against world-class first-growth Bordeaux wines. And that was just the beginning. In the words of famed Wine Critic Robert Parker: “…the quality of the wines soared to first-growth standards… no wine produced in the world over the twenty plus year period (1983-2013) has scored as consistently as the Shafer Hillside Select…”

With more than 60 custom homes throughout Cordillera Ranch and a reputation as a premier luxury home builder in the Texas Hill Country, Authentic Custom Homes, LLC more than lives up to its name. Each magnificent home genuinely reflects a successful combination of design and build that adds up to happy clients in spectacular homes.

“We call it the design-build difference,” says director of operations Adrianne Peña Carnes, who explains that while many custom home builders hire outside floor plan developers and designers, the process at family owned and operated Authentic Custom Homes is decidedly different. “Our design-build approach is truly integrated, with a team that is all under one roof and works together from day one to develop a home plan that meets or exceeds client expectations.” With more than 30 years’ industry experience, company founder and designer Israel Peña works closely with clients to bring their vision to life from the ground up with a floor plan that suits their needs and lifestyle. Israel is a graduate of the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, and is known locally for his innovative and distinctive designs. Clients come in with their ideas, their budget, pictures of features they would like included, and the conversation begins. “Israel designs all of our homes,” says Carnes, “and as the builder, we build them.”

72 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

The integrated approach results in smoother communication and easier accessibility to information, especially when it comes to budget. “An in-house designer is very aware of the costs because he is intimately involved in the budget throughout the project. Israel is able to talk with the client along the way, because through it all we are focusing on their budget. We think it’s valuable to have that knowledge of the cost during the actual process of designing a house.” To that end, clients have the ultimate convenience of logging into their personal account on the Authentic Custom Homes website. “With this tool, our clients can take advantage of daily logs, progress photos, job notes, blueprints and a robust mobile app,” says Carnes. Clients are also welcome to call or come by anytime during the process, in addition to regularly scheduled meetings during the design and construction process “to keep them informed of what we’ve just completed, and to inform them of the next upcoming phase.”

The range of architectural styles by Authentic Custom Homes is diverse and far-reaching, everything from French Country Elegance to Cape Cod Classic. The company is best known, however, for its Texas Hill Country creations, using the landscape and native elements such as limestone, oak and cedar to construct homes that exquisitely complement their natural surroundings. Energy efficiency is also paramount from the initial design to finished product. The orientation of the house on the lot, the direction of natural light and proper insulation, along with impeccable choices in heating and cooling systems, plumbing and lighting fixtures, and windows and doors all contribute to maximum energy efficiency. Carnes describes the stunning 4,515-square-foot Swede Springs home as “Santa Barbara-inspired, something we felt was fresh and new.” The five-bedroom, five-bath home features an open concept floor plan that allows for multiple flexible spaces, including additional space over the three-car garage, and a rear sunroom than can be used for more dining space or as a second home office. “We really love the front courtyard,” she says. “With its water

feature, it makes for a welcoming entrance.” Custom touches abound throughout the home — limestone countertops and heated floors in the master bath, rough sawn solid fir beams in the great room and sunroom, and knotty alder doors and cabinets. In addition, its location on a 3.43-acre lot “creates a lot of privacy in the backyard because it backs up to a dry creek bed.” The spec home was a popular entry in the Cordillera Ranch Tour of Homes in the spring, its interior enhanced for the occasion with fine furnishings provided by Double R Drygoods Elegant Interiors in Boerne.

As a Cordillera Ranch Preferred Builder since 1999, “we’re proud to design and build in a community that is so beautiful because of their attention to detail,” says Carnes. “Cordillera Ranch takes a lot of pride in their community and it shows.” In that regard, Authentic Custom Homes shares a similar pride, not only in their work, but in the way they are able to provide the ultimate in customer service to their clients — and that always goes back to the “one stop shopping” design-build process that they believe is key. “For each house we build, we have never designed or built that house before. It’s brand new. But our experience makes us familiar with what things cost and that helps the client.” Communication, Carnes adds, “is really the most important thing we do. We’re very personal with our clients. We appreciate that they have given us the opportunity to do this. We want everything to work for them. We want them to love their home and love living in it.” AUTHENTIC CUSTOM HOMES, LLC
