Expat COVID Love Story
When an American/Hungarian International Portrait Artist, formerly known as Baroness Valerie Haynal Forcier, arrived in Spain for a holiday with a friend in March of 2020, little did she know that the COVID lockdown would keep her here to marry her love in December, three years later, thus also becoming part of the English-speaking expat community here on the Costa del Sol.
Californian-born H. Vali became a Hungarian citizen with a bachelor of fine arts degree after studying art under the tutelage of the famous Gyemant Laszlo in Budapest.
Celebrities as varied as American scientist Edward Teller (of the hydrogen bomb) and Hungarian rock legend Demjen Ference were amongst her commissioned portrait requests.
She has paintings exhibited around the world in many countries and takes specific pride in the featured art in the psychiatric offices of Dr. Karme in Pasadena, and the Saatchi galleries.
She now has her own gallery in the Parque Botanico Country Club in Benahavis, alongside her newly published author husband.
Having survived major cancer some six years ago, her style has changed dramatically, and her gallery displays the old and the new.
With her now living in the famous white pueblo of Casares, she draws new inspiration for painting in her open-to-the-public studio within her gallery and invites fellow artists to come and paint and create.
On-Trend Colours Reflecting Comforting Lifestyle Design
Upgrading your home design is an opportunity to tap into new colour schemes. Knowing what shades are trendy and how different hues can work together for a cohesive design is an important step in creating an attractive design aesthetic.
While you might turn to family or friends for inspiration for your next DIY project, another resource for collecting concepts and options to upgrade your space is the internet. Consider the Valspar Colour-verse, found at www. valspar.com which allows visitors to explore colours in a unique way and offers paint colour inspiration and decor trends you can envision within your own home.
After experiencing the Valspar 2023 Colors of the Year firsthand by painting walls and art from the collection to see the 3D virtual house come to life, you can find the perfect paint shade for your space.
Colour Trends to Consider
Many of this year’s popular nature-inspired designs are all about finding comfort, embracing a flexible lifestyle, rediscovering joy, and leaning into the growing DIY movement. The most trendworthy, forward-thinking, and livable colours reflect specific facets or emotions of life, so you can update your well-used spaces with thoughtful colours that evoke positive energy and lasting change.
Comfort and Contentment:
If your goal is to create a space that envelopes you in a sense of comfort, consider a white with a yellow undertone that makes a space cosy like a soft blanket, like Cozy White from Valspar. Complement the softness with a muted clay that brings in brown undertones that suggest gentle contentment.
Calming Restoration:
Tap into the calming tones of nature with a hazy green that has duality, which brings in both the calm and liveliness of the great outdoors. Another option is a deep midnight blue used as an elegant calming shade to restore mind, body, and home.
Healthy, Mindful Living:
Create an uplifting space where your wellness is a priority. Evoke a greater sense of health consciousness with a light blue that has a dose of softness and can be used as a fresh neutral with the uplifting qualities of a modern pastel. Reinforce the benefits of mindful living with a cool grey that is balanced by the warmth of the yellow undertone, a natural hue like a cotton muslin cloth.
Connections and Joy:
Establish spaces where you can celebrate relationships with others, the world around you, and happiness in your being. Consider hues like white softened by a violet undertone, a harmonious shade promoted by digital connectivity. Evoke joy with a dependable classic tan that features a yellow undertone, suggesting new life with uplifting qualities.
Natural Balance:
Bringing hints of the outdoors into a well-loved living space creates a soothing ambiance. Consider a warm neutral brown tone inspired by the shades found in nature or a cooled-down blue that strikes a beautiful balance between cool and warm shades in your design.
Inspirational Thought:
A work-from-home or crafting space needs colour to inspire great thinking. Try a faded natural terracotta that sparks individuality and warmth or a deep blackened olive, an on-trend neutral that embodies charm and sophistication.

People Used To Lock Up Their Tea!
ou might think people love tea today, but the lengths they went to in Stuart and Georgian Britain were a bit bonkers! Back then, tea was imported from China and therefore very expensive, and only the rich could afford it. It was so expensive, in fact, that special tea boxes were made with locks on them, so no one could steal your tea! It was always kept where the mistress of the house could see it, which is why making tea was such an occasion! You wouldn’t trust your servants to make you a cup of tea! Would you lock up your PG Tips tea bags today?

Top Tips to Get Ready to Run
You’ve made the decision to get in shape, and whether your goal is a full marathon or simply a few laps around the neighbourhood, there are a few steps to consider taking before you strap on those shoes and head toward the finish line.
Here are a few tips to help get you ready for the big race:
Seek Quality Trainers
Feet come in a variety of widths and sizes, so visit a specialty running store to find perfect-fitting sneakers. These may come with a hefty price tag, but there are no shortcuts for comfort and support while running long distances.
Make a Schedule
Try to aim for at least 10 hours of training per week, including three days where you run and two or three days of other physical activity such as cycling or strength training. To avoid exhaustion, be sure to include at least 1-2 “rest” days per week.
Stick with Water
Avoid sports drinks that are loaded with preservatives and sugars. You can’t go wrong with the hydrating power of water. As a rule, try to consume at least 6-8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you run. Proper hydration after the run is also vital.
Go Online
Many websites have training guides for various skill levels or different types of races. If you have a smartphone, look for apps that can take you through day-by-day workouts to get you marathon-ready.
Nutrition
Filling your body with the proper amount of fuel can help ensure finish-line success. Load up on quality carbohydrates, such as beans, peas, whole-wheat pastas, whole-grain cereals, apples, brown rice, and root vegetables. Protein also plays an important role in a runner’s nutrition, so fill up on lean meats, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, peanut butter, and soy protein sources, as well.
By following these general tips, you’ll be able to focus on achieving your goal and enjoy the thrill of finishing the race.

8 Essentials for a Healthy Heart
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death globally. Studies throughout the past two decades indicate more than 80% of all cardiovascular events may be prevented by a healthy lifestyle and the management of risk factors.
To help measure cardiovascular health and make meaningful lifestyle changes, the American Heart Association introduced Life’s Essential 8, a checklist that explains eight habits and health measures that affect heart and brain health and overall well-being.
The checklist incorporates knowledge gained from more than 2,400 scientific papers on cardiovascular health published since it was originally introduced as Life’s Simple Seven more than a decade ago. It has been expanded to apply to anyone age 2 and older and now includes sleep as the eighth cardiovascular health component, reflecting findings that healthy sleep is essential for optimal heart and brain health.
Start making positive changes to improve your heart and brain health with these eight essential steps:
Step 1: Eat Better
The checklist offers a simple questionnaire to assess your eating pattern. A heart-healthy diet encompasses a high intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes; whole grains and fat-free and low-fat dairy; lean protein; and a low intake of sodium, red and processed meats, and sweetened foods and drinks. Eat whole foods and rely on healthy non-tropical oils (like olive and canola) for cooking.
Step 2: Get Active
For most adults, the target level of moderate physical activity (such as walking) is 150 minutes or more per week or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity physical activity. Kids ages 6 and older need 1 hour or more of play and structured activities per day.
Step 3: Manage Blood Glucose
When there is not enough insulin or the body does not use insulin efficiently, blood glucose levels accumulate in the bloodstream. Haemoglobin A1c readings measure your long-term blood glucose control. A normal A1c is below 5.7%; between 5.7%-6.4% indicates pre-diabetes.
Step 4: Maintain a Healthy Body Weight
Although the measure of body mass index (BMI) is not a perfect metric, it is easily calculated and widely available; therefore, BMI remains a reasonable gauge to assess weight categories that may lead to health problems. A BMI of 18.524.9 is associated with the highest levels of cardiovascular health.
Step 5: Manage Cholesterol Levels
Non-HDL (“bad”) cholesterol, rather than total cholesterol, is a reasonable predictor of cardiovascular risk. Non-HDL cholesterol can be measured without fasting, which means it can be assessed at any time of day and reliably calculated.
Step 6: Understand Blood Pressure Readings
An optimal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg while hypertension is defined as a 130-139 mm Hg systolic pressure (the top number in a reading) or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic pressure (bottom number).
Step 7: Quit Tobacco and Nicotine
Nicotine makes your heart rate and blood pressure skyrocket, while carbon monoxide and tobacco rob your heart, brain, and arteries of oxygen. There are about 4,000 chemical components found in cigarettes; at least 250 of them are harmful to your health. Reducing your health risk means eliminating exposure to any form of nicotine, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes and vaping devices, as well as limiting your exposure to secondhand smoke.
Step 8: Get Adequate Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is vital to cardiovascular health. Measured by the average hours of sleep per night, the optimal level is 7-9 hours daily for adults. Ideal daily sleep ranges for children are 10-16 hours per 24 hours for ages 5 and younger; 9-12 hours for ages 6-12; and 8-10 hours for ages 13-18.

The Truth Is You Are Not The Only Person Concerned About Cellulite…
This month, we investigate the taboo amongst our bodies, that dreaded word, cellulite, or softly nicknamed “Orange Peel”—and we try to answer some questions, as well as offer some top preventative tips.
Firstly, just what is cellulite? Cellulite occurs in the deepest layer of the skin (hypodermis). Among them are adipocytes, which are cells responsible for storing fat. Yet when these wear out and the fat is not balanced in harmony, the cells increase in size and push the skin, creating those bumps that we later call cellulite - or its nickname, “orange peel”.
Why do adipocytes stop working properly ?
Well, to a large extent, this is due to poor circulation genetics, the malfunction and poor activation of hormones, and the sedentary pace of life, in which diet and exercise are key factors.
When does cellulite appear ?
It usually begins to form during puberty, and between 85 and 98% of women have some degree of cellulite, while in men it is exceptional.
Does it affect women more than men?
Yes! Women naturally have 27% more body fat than men and also have adipocytes that are 5 times larger, causing the retention of ore interstitial fluid and hindering microcirculation in the area. It affects both thin and overweight women.
What are the causes?
Cellulite is formed due to hormonal overproduction that causes fat cells to stop working properly. These cells are not able to perform their drainage function properly, so they become inflamed, increase in size, and become rigid. The causes that can produce this hormone overproduction are natural hormonal changes in women, for example, puberty or pregnancy. Also, taking oestrogen, living a non active life, eating foods with high salt content, or even wearing tight clothing have an effect.
Did you know? There are FOUR grades of Cellulite!
Grade 1 - The skin has a smooth and even appearance, both when you are standing and lying, and when pinched, it does not appear like orange peel.
Grade 2 - The skin continues to have a smooth and uniform appearance, but when pinching it or contracting the muscles, orange peel appears.
Grade 3 - The nodules are visible without the need to pinch the skin.
Grade 4 - More palpable, visible, and painful nodules.
Six Good Habits you can do to prevent Cellulite
1 Drink more water - Drinking between 6 and 8 glasses of water a day is recommended to combat fluid retention and promote drainage.
2 Maintain a healthy diet - A complete and balanced diet is essential to keep the body free of lipids, carbs, proteins and toxins that can otherwise be stored. I recommend foods that contain fibre and water, for example pineapple.
3 Do not wear tight clothes - The problem with wearing tight clothes all the time is that it hinders the venous return. Therefore I recommend you wear clothes that are not excessively tight to the body.
4 Take cold water baths - Cold water can stimulate blood circulation and improve the elasticity of the skin, along with a massage can help facilitate lymphatic drainage. Even in the winter ending your shower with a good blast of cold water directing it to the cellulite areas.
5 No smoking - Smokers are more likely to experience loss of elasticity and appearance of cellulite in the skin of the lower body.
6 Exercise - A constant and planned exercise routine is possibly the best way to prevent and combat cellulite
Sharon’s Guide to frizz free Summer Hair
Are you tired of dealing with frizzy hair? You’re not alone! Frizz is a common hair concern that can leave you feeling frustrated and self-conscious. The good news is that understanding the reasons behind frizz is the first step in achieving a smooth, sleek look. Let’s take a look at the top three factors that contribute to frizzy hair.
1. Hair Condition:
Over-processed, overcoloured, and bleached hair is more prone to frizz. These treatments can strip the hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and vulnerable to damage.
2. Climate:
Dry hair is more of an issue in warmer climates, as hot and humid weather conditions can cause frizz. In these conditions, moisture in the air can penetrate the hair, causing it to swell and become frizzy.
3. Cuticle:
When the cuticle of the hair is raised and not lying flat, the hair appears frizzy. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, heat styling, and chemical treatments.
Now that we’ve addressed what causes frizz, let’s take a look at some steps you can take to combat it. Here are three quick tips to achieve beautiful, frizz-free hair:
1. Regular Trims:
Maintaining the condition of your hair is crucial in preventing frizz. Split ends can make your hair look damaged and dry, so be sure to schedule regular trims at your salon or come and see us at Glow & Bubbly to keep them at bay.
2. Don’t Over Wash:
Over washing your hair can strip it of its natural oils, leaving it dry and more prone to frizz. Aim to wash your hair no more than every 2-3 days, and use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo.
3. Add Moisture:
To manage Frizz, the most important factor is adding moisture. This compensates for the dryness that causes frizz and helps to smooth the hair cuticle. Use a moisturising conditioner after shampooing, and follow up with a leave-in conditioner or hair oil/serums to lock in moisture.
• Olaplex 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo & Olaplex 8 Bond Intense Mask
• RedKen Frizz Dismiss Shampoo & Conditioner combo
When shampooing and conditioning make sure to not use excessive heat and always rinse on a cooler water temperature, when towel drying don’t use excessive friction as this will disturb the cuticle. Apply a good leave in conditioner, use a wide tooth comb to distribute product and let if possible your hair air dry to 70% before using a dryer.
Before drying it is essential to use moisture rich styling products to minimise the frizz. These are some great must have products that will really help and are applied to damp not wet hair:
• Olaplex 6 Bond Smoother
• Olaplex 9 Bond Nourishing Serum
• Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame
• Instant Deflate Moroccan Oil Treatment
• ColourWow Dreamcoat Anti-Humidity Spray this product is a real game changer and can be used in conjunction with the above.
Always Blowdry root to end’s, rough drying will just cause more frizz. Use a cool heat setting as this keeps the hair from drying out.
Once the hair is dry the final step to seal in all that moisture and keep the frizz away is to finish the styling process with a shine spray, or serum. I use these products daily in the salon:
• Tigi Bed Head After-Party
• Tigi Bed Head Headrush Shine spray
• Schwarzkopf Osis Sparkler Finishing Spray
The other alternative to consider If your looking for a more permanent, low maintenance option is a Keratin Smoothing Treatment which can be a really great way to reduce frizz, and aid ongoing styling and manageability.
These are salon specialist services that infuse the hair with Keratin, these treatments take 2-3 hours and last for 3 to 4 months. It’s advisable with any chemical treatment to have a full consultation with your stylist to understand the service you are undertaking. We offer a range of treatments at Glow&Bubbly and are always happy to offer free consultations. The benefits of a Keratin treatment are:
• Eliminate Frizz
• Reduce the need for heat stylers
• Nourish and repair the hair
• Aid manageability and styling
• Seal in colour and provide protection against UV light
By following these tips and using these products and treatments, you too can achieve the beautiful, smooth hair you’ve always wanted. If you have any further questions or would like to book an appointment with me, please contact us or book online at Glow & Bubbly Salon, we are located in the Benavista area of Estepona.
Hope you find these tip’s useful and can enjoy a frizz free summer

Gluten Free Recipe! Chicken Keema With Lime And Coriander
Keema is an Indian street food made with meat and curry spices. For this sensational one-pot, you’ll pan fry the chicken with rice and carrots and lift the flavours with a squeeze of lime. Gluten free, easy to cook, and very special!
Step 1 :
Peel and finely slice the brown onion. Heat a large, wide-based non-stick pan with a matching lid with a drizzle of vegetable oil over a medium-high heat. Once hot, add the sliced onion with a pinch of salt and sugar and cook for 3 min, or until starting to soften, then add the diced chicken and cook for a further 3 min, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as you go.
Step 2:
Meanwhile, top, tail, peel, and chop the carrots into small, bite-sized pieces, Peel (scrape the skin off with a teaspoon) and grate (or finely chop) the ginger, Peel and grate (or finely chop) the garlic.
Step 3 :
Add the chopped carrot, grated ginger, and grated garlic to the pan and cook for 1 min. Add the crumbled stock cube, tomato paste, and curry powder, and give everything a good mix.
Step 4:
Stir the basmati rice into the pan, add 300 ml cold water to the pan, and bring to a boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to very low and cook, covered, for 10-12 min or until the water has been absorbed and the rice is cooked through. Check and stir occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom
Tip: Add a splash of water if the rice looks a little dry!
Step 5
Meanwhile, roll the lime with your hand on a hard surface (to release more juice) and cut in half, then chop the coriander finely, including the stalks (save some leaves for garnish!)
Step 6
Stir the chopped coriander and juice of 1/2 lime through the cooked rice – this is your beef keema
Step 7
Taste for seasoning, adding more salt and pepper if needed. Chop the remaining lime into wedges, Serve the beef keema in bowls. Garnish with the reserved coriander leaves and a lime wedge to the side

Spring Checklist for Pets 6 ways to keep your pets happy and healthy
Warmer weather means it’s time to spring clean, get groomed, and prepare your pets’ diets to support them through the season.
Keep your furry friends happy and healthy this spring with these six tips.
1. Give Skin and Coats a Little TLC:
Many pets develop winter coats during the colder months to help them stay warm and comfortable, then shed the coats in the spring to prepare for warmer temperatures. Some pets may need extra help maintaining their shiny, healthy coats, especially if mats have formed in their fur or if they are breeds that develop a thick undercoat. Professional grooming, at-home brushing, and regular bathing can all be helpful ways to speed up the process to remove some of the extra fur and decrease the prevalence of dander, dust, and pollen that can attach to fur and skin through the season.
2. Add Seasonal Allergy Support with Supplements:
Just like humans, furry friends can develop and experience seasonal allergies, too. Giving your pets’ immune systems some extra support can help ease some common allergy symptoms. Supplements high in proteins and amino acids such as Arginine, Carnitine, and Taurine for Cats and fish oil, flaxseed oil, and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids for Dogs provide seasonal allergy support by aiding normal immune functions, skin health, and gut flora, and may also help maintain normal histamine levels.
3. Ease Back into Exercise:
The change in weather means more time for outdoor adventures with your pets, but don’t forget to cool down and warm up as you and your pets ease back into the season. Planning for short, leashed walks and timed play sessions can help your pets gradually prepare their hips and joints for fun, warm weather activities.
4. Watch Out for Pet Pests:
Once temperatures start to rise, the tiny, creepy critters start crawling. Fleas, ticks, and other pests can cause serious health concerns for pets. This spring, make sure your pest control programs are primed and ready for added protection. Talk to your veterinarian about the best routine and products for your pets.
5. Freshen Up Bedding and Bowls:
It’s important to keep a clean environment by scrubbing, sweeping, and vacuuming regularly to decrease allergens in the home. When you’re tackling this year’s spring cleaning, remember to put your pets’ bedding and bowls on the list, too. Updating or disinfecting your pets’ blankets, litter boxes, toys, and other supplies is a good way to keep them feeling safe and comfortable in the home.
6. Schedule an Annual Vet Visit:
Spring is a good time to schedule your pets’ annual vet visits. Make sure they’re up to date on all vaccinations, get their dental health checkups and re-evaluate nutrition plans.

What is the Advantage of Costalink Magazine Advertising?
Magazine advertising is one of the most powerful marketing tools available, and an ad placed in a Costalink Magazine can improve sales and promotion or Brand awareness enormously.
Costalink is the No.1 Local Magazine and keeps us all in touch with our local area along the whole Costa. Costalink is trusted, interesting, quirky, full of local information and businesses and a really useful source of information for over 16 years.
Costalink is the perfect direct niche publication for you and here’s 10 benefits why:
1. This is Your Audience - Readers are within 1 hour away!
Your business is local, and Costalink Magazine is the ideal way to speak directly to your potential customers, who are at most one hour away from you! Like you, they are interested and involved in our local community, so they are interested in you too. Because they are proud of where they live and because visitors are interested in the area they are visiting, Costalink readers and subscribers prefer to support and buy from local businesses.
2. What People Take In During Their Time Out
There’s plenty to attract our attention on websites and social media, but typically that lasts 20 seconds. Sitting down with a hot drink and a Costalink Magazine is different. It’s a quiet, relaxed time we have awarded ourselves. There isn’t any competition; we’ll just look at and read what interests us, and that’s a great opportunity for our partners.
3. Being Noticed and Remembered
There’s a lot of media traffic out there, and we learn to filter it. In Costalink Magazine, there are only so many pages, with just a few advertisements on each page. You have a much better chance of being noticed and your local advertisements will be more memorable than their digital equivalents.
4. Reader Confidence
Fake news and cybercrime have made many people hesitant about online engagement. In contrast, readers trust their local Costalink Magazine as a source of personalised, non biassed, local information, so they are more likely to trust you too. There’s very little risk for them in making a visit, a call, WhatsApp or sending an email.

That means your advertisement can be seen over and over again.
6. Spin-off Brand Benefits
Your local Costalink Magazine has a great reputation for interest and authority. People trust what they see, and your brand and business will benefit as a result.
7. Staying power
Costalink Magazine has been around for a long time, we are celebrating 16 years in 2023, yet we maintain our freshness and relevance so readers and businesses who already advertise recognise its value. Commit to a campaign of advertising and you can build your recognition.
8. Extra Opportunities

10. Measurability
You know exactly when your advertisement will appear and where, so you can measure the response. We help you make your call to action very specific and you’ll know exactly how effective your advertisement has been.
