Rising Damp on the Costa del Sol: The Hidden Risk to Your Property

The beautiful Costa del Sol, where sun-drenched beaches and vibrant culture attract expats from around the world. However, amidst the charm of this coastal paradise, there lurks a hidden danger that poses a significant risk to your property: rising damp.

In this article, we will explore the causes of rising damp and shed light on why it is crucial to conduct a health check of your property before the end of summer.

Understanding Rising Damp:

Rising damp is a common issue in coastal areas like the Costa del Sol, where the proximity to the sea and the region’s unique climate contribute to its prevalence. It occurs when groundwater is absorbed by porous materials such as bricks, mortar, and concrete, causing moisture to rise upwards through capillary action. Many properties on the Costa del Sol are constructed using porous materials, such as traditional brick and mortar. These materials readily absorb moisture, allowing rising damp to penetrate and spread throughout the building.

3. Lack of Proper Damp Proofing:

Inadequate damp-proof courses or the absence of effective moisture barriers during construction can leave properties vulnerable to rising damp. Over time, the absence of these preventive measures can cause significant damage to the structural integrity of the building.

4. Irrigation Systems.

Improperly designed or malfunctioning irrigation systems can lead to an uneven distribution of moisture in the soil around your property. Three Spanish Inventions and Firsts in the World

Submarines -A Spanish Invention

One of the first prototypes dates from 1859, when the Catalan Narciso Monturiol designed and built a manual submersible vessel, the

Ictineo I and then the Ictineo II in 1864, of which a commemorative monument can be seen in Barcelona. Isaac Peral y Caballero, was a Spanish engineer, naval officer and designer of the Peral Submarine. He joined the Spanish navy in 1866, and developed the world’s first electric-powered submarine which was launched in 1888.

First Computer Game

In 1912 Leonardo Torres y Quevedo invented the first computer game in history: El Ajedrista (The Chess Player), an autonomous robotic chess game. The same Spanish inventor is attributed with having created the first digital calculator and the radio remote control.

Though the first man stepped on the moon in 1969, in the 1930s astronomers and physicists were already planning for the voyage to outer space. Emilio Herrera Linares, a Spanish military colonel, is credited with being the first to design a pressurised suit which was used in a high-altitude balloon flight in 1936.

If we asked you to picture a Viking, chances are you’d picture a big hairy bloke with a horned helmet. But actually, Viking helmets didn’t have horns! Horns would’ve been impractical in battle, although there is evidence of other civilisations having horned helmets! The legend likely originated with Scandinavian artists in the 1800s, who popularised portrayals of the nomadic raiders wearing the equipment in their works.

When and why did you start your fitness journey?

I started my fitness journey around the same time I was leaving high school, so that would be around 27 years ago, wow! My teacher got me into weightlifting as I think he could see I could easily end up going down a different path. I fell in love with weight training and kickboxing and went on to compete for England in kickboxing and also competed in bodybuilding shows.

What is the reason you decide on muscle gain as your chosen goal?

I just fell in love with the process of building muscle, I loved hanging around the gym even if I wasn´t training. I just wanted to be in good shape. I loved the way it made me feel and the confidence it gave me. I was always chasing the man in the mirror after a session and I still am to this day. I wanted to be like my childhood hero´s, Arnold and Stallone.

Who was your inspiration for this?

Arnold and Stallone were big inspirations for me growing up and watching their movies all the time. Also Jean Claude Van Dam, which is mainly why I wanted to combine kickboxing aswell. I had a couple of real life inspirations also, one who I am still friends with to this day.

What motivates you?

Mymainmotivationisjusttobeabetterversionof myself all the time. I want to constantly improve, I want to be leaner, faster, stronger and I want to feel proud of my achievements. I take motivation from everywhere. I see people in the gym who are just starting out on their journey and that gives me motivation. I want to be a role model for my clients also, someone that they can look upto. Fitness has always been the one thing i´m really good at so to stay fit, active and in shape is really important for me.

Toughest challenge you encounter in reaching your goal?

I guess the toughest challenge I face when reachingmygoalsismyownselfsabotage. Many of my clients report the same also. I can be my own worst enemy especially as I get closer and closer to my goal. But I love that mental struggle and I love to prove myself wrong and beat that inner voice. Even though I know i´ll be hearing from it again in the future. I believe overcoming it over and over again makes us stronger over time.

Training tip?

Sloweverythingdown. Ifthereissomethingyou´ll hear me saying over and over again in a training setting, it’s SLOW, STRETCH and FOCUS. I have been the guy who wanted to be the strongest in the gym. I have lifted some heavy stuff, but looking back, it wasn’t actually congruent with my goals and what I wanted. It was purely to please my EGO. And that is always where injuries have occured for me. Leave your ego at the door, and spend some time in your head, listening to what your muscles are saying, slow your movements down, enjoy a great big stretch in the muscle and focus. Don´t worry what weight the next person has on the bar, stay in your own lane and enjoy your journey!

Favourite cheat meal?

I love Mexican food, I´ve been there a couple of times and I just love the flavour. Fajitas are my Go to cheat meal. It’s not even that bad a cheat meal I guess, but i will go to town with sour cream and cheese, making it quite calorific

Favourite aspect of the gym?

I love to see people trying to better themselves, that’s what I love about the gym. From the person just walking through the door, to the seasoned bodybuilder, they are all in there for the exact same reasons, to become a better version of themselves.

Favourite exercise?

I love dumbbell chest presses, I can go really heavy on them and get a super pump in the chest with them.

Best advice received?

When I first started lifting in the gym, some of the older boys at the time (older sounds funny now because they were my age now), they used to tell me that I didn’t need to go as heavy with my lifting, and I used to think they were just saying that because they didñ´t lift as much as me! 25 years later and I’m saying the same things to younger gym members!

Favourite training song?

It has to be ´no easy way out¨ from Rocky 4. That movie and the whole soundtrack has seen me be super motivated through a million workouts

Something not many people know about you?

I´m a little bit alien obsessed. If I´m ever watching tv, it’s more than likely going to be the show áncient aliens´. I sometimes drive up into the mountains in Marbella and just lay on the grass looking up at the sky. When they come, I´m going with them, that’s for sure ha ha!

Simple recipes retain the authenticity of the Costa del Sol’s notorious food scene, whilst also encouraging you to try the dishes at home. From appetisers to desserts, each dish highlights the origins of its key ingredients, bringing the essence of this beautiful coastal region to your plate.

Patatas a lo Pobre:

A hearty and comforting dish, Patatas a lo Pobre, or “poor man’s potatoes,” is a traditional Spanish recipe that originated from humble roots. Local potatoes are sliced and cooked with onions, green bell peppers, garlic, and olive oil. The name reflects the simplicity of the ingredients used, which were readily available to farmers in the region. The combination of soft, golden potatoes, caramelised onions, and the aroma of olive oil makes this dish a true Costa del Sol classic.

Ingredients:

• 1kg potatoes

• 1 onion

• 2 green or red peppers (optional)

• Salt

• Extra virgin olive oil

• 1 garlic clove

There are deviations from the original recipe, and some venta’s and tapas bars add or include chorizo, bacon, eggs and red bell peppers…

How To Cook

“Poor Man’s Potatoes”

Step 1.

The first step is very easy and fast! You just have to peel the potatoes and cut them into round slices. Make sure that your potato slices aren’t too thin because that way they’ll fall apart. Also carefully cut the onions and peppers in julienne style (thin and long).

Step 2.

Pour the olive oil on a large frying pan and in the meantime put some salt on the potatoes. Once you salted the potatoes, place them in the frying pan with the cold oil. It is important that the oil it’s cold at the beginning because this way they will get the characteristic “confit” texture.

Step 3.

Cook the potatoes on a low heat for 15 minutes, add the pepper and onion slices and cook all of them together for 10 more minutes on medium heat.

Step 4.

Remove the oil and let the vegetables on the dry pan to toast (you can also use a new pan). While toasting them put the garlic and a little bit of salt.

Step 5.
