isitors to the historic town of Cottage Grove will find it and the surrounding area to be a gold mine of activity and exploration for all ages. There are nuggets to be found in both the town and country for those willing to search them out.

Dorena Lake is six miles east of Cottage Grove by way of Row River Road. This large lake covers 1,900 acres when full and features camping, a large boat ramp and picnic area at nearby Baker Bay Park. Schwarz Park is nearby and also offers camping.

The entire family will want to explore our historic downtown with its beautiful city parks, colorful murals, museums and small businesses.

Umpqua National Forest boasts a wide selection of hiking trails, campgrounds, picnicking spots, waterfalls and places to commune with nature. The forest covers 984,602 acres of mountain woodlands and is about 15 miles east of town, beyond Dorena Lake.

Recreation opportunities abound for those who are inclined to get out and explore the countryside, including a covered bridge tour and the Bohemia mining district. There are two U.S. Army Corps of Engineer reservoirs located outside of town that draw locals and visitors from around the state to their shores. Serene Cottage Grove Lake is a short five-mile drive south of town going out Sixth Street to London and Reservoir roads. The lake is three miles long and covers 1,158 acres when it’s full. Tent and RV camping are available at Pine Meadows Campground, in addition to a nearby primitive campground. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are also available at Shortridge and Wilson Creek Parks.

The Row River Trail is a popular Rails-to-Trails project that begins in Cottage Grove and winds 17 miles along the Row River, passing Dorena Lake along the way. It is a safe, scenic path that is paved for walking, biking or horseback riding. The gentle hills are possible for most stages of fitness, and the gorgeous scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Culture comes in many forms and includes performances at the Cottage Theatre’s beautiful state-of-the-art, $1 million facility that attracts and features local actors in a variety of plays. Other annual events include the rodeo and Bohemia Mining Days celebration in July, the WOE Heritage Fair in August, and the December lighting of the Main Street Christmas tree.

fter a long 11-month closure, Cottage Grove finally has their beloved pool back and better than ever. In 2019, community members cut the ribbon on the new and improved Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center in front of a crowd of about 200 eager locals. The ribbon-cutting signaled the end of a lengthy closure that, while inconvenient for local swimming enthusiasts and youth athletes, brought myriad improvements to a pool facility that desperately needed it after 63 years of continued service to the Cottage Grove community. Even more people fi ltered through the shiny new lobby throughout the course of the evening and around 300 people attended the event in total, culminating in a community “jump-in” where dozens of attendees, mostly children, leapt into the water in unison to become the first members of the public to enjoy the upgraded pool. South Lane superintendent Larry Sullivan, former CGHS athletic director Jerry Braunberger and senior swimmer and water polo player M.J. Raade spoke before the ribboncutting, emphasizing the positive effect this re-opening will have on all parts of the Cottage Grove community. But having a hometown

pool again was no more important to anyone than CGHS water polo and swim coach Tyson Pilling. It was also clear from the diversity of the crowd at the grand re-opening that the Daugherty Center is a facility with multigenerational impact in the Cottage Grove community. Improvements made to the pool include shortening from 33 yards to the standard 25 yards; better fi ltration to decrease wave interference for swimmers; a deeper tank with wider lanes; improved, fully-functional dehumidifiers that maintain a comfortable humidity level on the pool deck; fully renovated locker rooms; improved sealing of the pool tank which will drastically cut down chemical and maintenance costs; new lighting; solar panels to help with heating; and, of course, an added warm water pool. All in all, the improvements make the

Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center one of the best indoor swimming pools in the greater Lane County area, if not the entire state. Lap swim is available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well Monday through Wednesday and Friday, 5:30 to 6:45 a.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. For more information regarding the pool schedule, visit www.cottagegrovepool.com and stop by in person to see more information about punch cards, memberships and signing up for swim lessons.

Engaging and enriching the community through the magic of live theatre since 1982

O

ne of Cottage Grove’s cultural gems is Cottage Theatre (CT), which has been engaging and enriching the community through the magic of live theatre since 1982. Now in its 38th season, CT has grown tremendously since humble beginnings under a parachute on the lawn of the Village Green Resort. CT now performs to audiences of more than 11,000 people each year in 80 public performances, drawing patrons from throughout Lane County and beyond. A member of the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT), Cottage Theatre was one of just six theatres in the nation selected to produce a world premiere as part of the AACT 2018 NewPlayFest. As a volunteer-centered community theatre, one of CT’s primary goals is to provide a creative outlet for community members. CT actors, directors, designers, ushers and crew members are all volunteers with a passion for theatre. New volunteers of all ages are warmly

welcomed and no prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and have fun! Cottage Theatre’s 2020 season opened at the end of January with the classic comedy “Arsenic and Old Lace.” Joseph Kesselring’s tale of merry mayhem and murderous aunts played to capacity crowds, as is frequently the case with CT shows. Immediately following Arsenic and Old Lace, CT hosted the 19th annual Metropolitan Rhythm & Blues Revue, a fundraiser for the Cottage Grove High School Music Department. Next up in this year’s season is “Mamma Mia,” the seductively fun musical sensation. This show, based on a collection of ABBA’s greatest hits, is on stage for four weekends from April 3 through 26, and features a cast of 20 accompanied by a live band. In June, CT will present the West Coast Premiere of “Seeking Red,” a gripping new drama about truth and identity written by upand-coming Chicago playwright Glenn B. Rust, who grew up at Cottage Theatre. Seeking Red will be on stage at CT from June 5 through 21. CT’s August show is perfect for audiences of all ages. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” features the “Peanuts” gang in a playful medley of beloved comic characters. This small cast musical runs for three weekends from Aug. 14–30. Following that is “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” based on the novel by Victor Hugo and songs from the Disney fi lm. This powerful musical of obsession and redemption will run from Oct.

2-25 on the CT stage. Cottage Theatre’s 2020 season concludes in December with a sparkly holiday jingle for the whole family: “Elf the Musical.” This show is based on the popular 2003 film and is a hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy that follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to fi nd his true identity. Elf will run from Dec. 4–20. In addition to its main season, Cottage Theatre offers summer theatre camps for youth. The 2020 offerings include SKIT Camp for ages 5–8 ( June 22–26), SPARK for ages 9–11 ( June 15–19), and a two-week-long performance camp for ages 12–14 ( July 6–17). The latter camp culminates in three public performances on the CT stage, July 17–19. Cottage Theatre is in the midst of a big remodeling project to enhance the theatregoing experience for its patrons. The first phase of the project was completed in 2019, and included replacing the auditorium seats, which had been at the end of their useful lifespan. The bulk of the project has been delayed to 2021 (after construction costs jumped significantly) and will include reconfiguring the auditorium to add 50 extra seats, as well as making improvements to both sightlines and sound system. Cottage Theatre is located at 700 Village Drive in Cottage Grove. For more information about becoming involved, or for a current show schedule, visit www.cottagetheatre.org or call the theatre box office at 541-942-8001.

COVERED BRIDGE CAPITAL OF OREGON Centennial Bridge This bridge was constructed in 1987 by volunteer labor to celebrate Cottage Grove’s centennial. It rests on abutments of the old Main Street Bridge, which stood until the 1950s. Swinging Bridge Located a half-mile upstream from Centennial Bridge, Swinging Bridge was built for foot and bicycle traffic and was mostly used by children crossing the Coast Fork to get to school. Currently closed for repairs. Chambers Railroad Bridge Built in 1925 by lumberman J.H. Chambers to cross the Coast Fork of the Willamette River from his sawmill to the timberlands west of town, this is the only covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. Restored in 2011. Mosby Creek Bridge Constructed in 1920 and restored in 1990, this is the oldest bridge in Lane County. Its one lane remains open to traffic today.

Stewart Bridge Constructed in 1930 and restored in 1996, this structure has semi-circular portal arches, ribbon openings at the eaves, and decorative S-curve brackets. The deep water below the bridge is considered one of the best swimming holes in the county. Dorena Bridge Constructed in 1949 and restored in 1996, this bridge was built after the construction of Dorena Dam on the Row River, forming the present day lake. The Dorena Bridge once tied the roads on the north and south sides of the lake. Closed to traffic, the bridge is a popular wedding site. Currin Bridge Constructed in 1925 and restored in 1995, this bridge features white portals and red sides. Currin Bridge replaced an earlier covered bridge built in 1883 by a prominent local bridge builder, Nels Roney.

A stroll around Cottage Grove just isn’t complete without a walk over the Centennial Bridge, constructed in 1987.

The Currin Bridge and its counterparts are one of the most frequently cited reasons for a visit to Cottage Grove by out-of-towners. 14 •

Bohemia Mining Days celebrates Cottage Grove’s past After six decades, Cottage Grove’s Bohemia Mining Days Celebration remains a happy, much anticipated, summer event that brings together families and friends for three days of fun. Since 1959, thousands of volunteers and the generous, faithful support of businesses and family foundations have come together to make the magic happen. The result is BMD has become an annual gift our community gives to itself. There are lots of reasons why Bohemia Mining Days has survived for six decades and is recognized as an Oregon Heritage Tradition. In all those years, for festival-goers, it has been a jam-packed weekend of parades, Old West shootouts and train robberies, carnival rides, a multitude of contests, a miner’s high-country breakfast, the occasional famous person’s visit, favorite bands, favorite vendors who return year after year, and seeing old friends and neighbors strolling through “Bohemia City” in Coiner Park.

by Wheelbarrow and Candlestick Run. He also created new games such as Fuse-winder, Bohemia Deputies, and Digging in the Dark. Feud players sign up to play and earn points for participating in events that collectively determine which town wins The Feud.

In a full-circle experience, Boone stepped down from the board in 2017 and passed the Feud Master duties to Orr Reeve, the fi rst Feud winner. Festival planners today refer to Boone as the “Father of the Feud”. BMD boasts not one, not two, but three parades! Friday’s Kiddie Parade and Saturday’s Grand Miners Parade have been part of every celebration. Thursday’s” ladies-only” Bloomers Parade was introduced by Festival Coordinator Sharon Jean in 2007 to kickoff the opening of Bohemia City in Coiner Park. The parade theme cele-

The origin of the festival is deeply rooted in Cottage Grove residents’ passion for preserving our early history in fun ways. Early community celebrations in the 1930’s and in 1955 resulted in a huge celebration of Oregon’s statehood centennial. The success of that event led organizers to continue an annual summertime celebration of local history. Prospector Ray Nelson is recognized by festival organizers as “The Father of BMD” for his vision of creating an event that would draw visitors off the newly-constructed Interstate 5 freeway and increase awareness among locals of their town’s unique and colorful history. The Prospectors and Gold Diggers Club formed to plan the annual event. As is the case with any annual community event that has BMD’s longevity, there have been challenges to keep the tradition going. In the 1980’s, during the lengthy economic recession and the closure of most of the lumber mills, it was the carnival revenue that paid the operating bills of a much scaled back event. There were two notable years, 1999 and 2011, when the festival financially seemed doomed to fail. Both times it was saved by the generosity of local businesses and donors who paid off the debts. Financially, BMD 2012 was a lean one when Cottage Grove City Councilor Jake Boone took the helm as BMD President. With a reduced operating fund, free activities were needed to offer to kids and their families. Boone, a devoted “gamer”, used his creativity and his love of history to re-introduce in a fun new way the infamous Cottage Grove vs. Lemati Feud in the late 19th Century. At that period in local history, the community experienced rapid growth fueled by suddenly wealthy miners settling on the east side of the river. Cottage Grove was given the nickname of “Slabtown” because of the large slabs of wood placed on its roads to allow travel in rainy months. The conflicts over where municipal services would go first resulted in the creation of the City of Lemati, a Kalapuya word meaning “peaceful valley”. Boone put a mining-themed twist to traditional summertime Americana-style games, such as the Two Towns Tug-O-War, Twenty Miles

brates the invention of pants for women and honors the women who fought so hard for women’s rights in the early 20th Century. In 2012, the BMD Board made a commitment to include more cultural heritage activities and attractions. The Bohemia City Players’ play highlights the history behind the annual theme. The Historical Treasure Hunt and Time-Traveling Train takes treasure-seeking hunters to local museums and the Historic Downtown District learning facts about local history to compete in a daily $100 cash prize drawing. Historical demonstrations of blacksmithing, fur trapping, antique engines, fashions, and a Civil War Encampment have fulfi lled that commitment. BMD has had its good years and bad years with our volunteers serving as the glue that holds it together for future generations to enjoy. It is the “failure is not an option” commitment of these fiercely committed volunteers, combined with the strong support of donors large and small, that have kept the tradition of Bohemia Mining Days alive for the past 61 years. PARTNERS IN HISTORY Bridging the past and future Cottage Grove history

T

he Kalapuya Indians called the southern Willamette Valley and northern Douglas County home, though their numbers quickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white settlers who began arriving here in 1848. Disease and a move to reservations reduced local Kalapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last full-blooded Kalapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in Idaho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the Columbia River to Oregon City and then traveled south through the Willamette Valley

to Lane County. The Donation Land Claim Act brought more Americans to seek a life in Oregon.

time, homes and businesses fi lled in between the two settlements and they became known as Cottage Grove.

James Chapin came to the Willamette Valley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship floundered off the Oregon Coast. He settled south of Cottage Grove in 1865.

Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific Highway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. Later, Highway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. In 1957, Interstate 5 opened on the east side of the city.

A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. It was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out between west siders and those east of the river in the town of Lemati over which side of the river the post office would occupy. Over

purses. As early as 1863 gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains (so named for one of its early miners, James “Bohemia” Johnson). Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an influx of businesses into Cottage Grove. Flooding was a common problem in Cottage Grove until the 1940s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Cottage Grove Reservoir on the Coast Fork and Dorena Reservoir on Row River.

The Cottage Grove Historical Library, located at the corner of 10th and Jefferson streets, also contains much information about businesses, buildings, churches and schools that pertains to the development of the area. Taking steps to secure ongoing connection to Cottage Grove’s past Cottage Grove’s Historic Preservation Refinement Plan focuses on long-range management of Cottage Grove’s cultural heritage by seeking to maintain the city’s historic character. The city has seen a number of heritage projects through Heritage All-Star and Certified Local Government grants. Some such projects include providing interpretative signage about Opal Whiteley, the restoration of the Opal mural at All-America City

Square, walking tour signage, brochures, enhanced collection equipment for historic items, improved lighting and collection storage in the museum, digital archiving and physical curation of newspaper collections. Grants dedicated to historic preservation, as with the renovation of the Old Club and Bank Building, have also im-proved the appearance of Main Street while maintaining its history. Meanwhile, the Main Street

Refinement Plan has proposed to enhance the economic vitality of downtown by creating accessible streetscapes and redesigning the commercial core of the district. As part of the plan’s goals, the city means to promote inter-organizational collaboration of heritage partners, im-prove its historical review process, develop a local inventory of historic resources, preserve said resourc-

es, promote tourism and provide economic incentives for building restoration. A host of strategies are scheduled to be employed over the next several years to accomplish these goals. For more information on historical preservation, visit the city’s website at www. cottagegrove.org under the City De-partments and Community Development tab.

Top Cottage Grove sports moments of 2019 By Nick Snyder/Cottage Grove Sentinel

A

natural disaster, a new pool and unfamiliar faces taking the reins of various Lions’ teams. It was a year of challenges, change and, ultimately, a number of triumphs for Cottage Grove High School sports. Here is a look back at the top five sports stories of 2019 as the Lions carry that success into 2020.

“Snow slows spring sports start” While weather often plays a prominent role during the spring sports season, it was an especially ominous start to the year as local teams faced the cancellation of the first week of practice due to snow. “For a minute there, I thought maybe Mother Nature hated softball,” said North Douglas head softball coach Jesse Rice. The first official day of spring sports for high school teams across the

state was Feb. 28, which coincided with over a foot of snow accumulating and setting off a week of havoc around the area.

“Roberts heading home” Gary Roberts spent the last 12 years serving in various roles at CGHS — football coach, athletic director, assistant principal, dean of students and social studies teacher. That tenure came to an end last spring when Roberts accepted the assistant principal position at Marshfield High School in his hometown of Coos Bay. In January, Roberts announced that he was stepping down from the role of head coach after 11 seasons at the helm. The five-time Sky-Em Coach of the Year left as the winningest coach in school history, which includes the 2017 state title.

“Krokus crowned state champion” the 2019 4A state triple jump competition was over as soon as Mitchell Krokus started. Competing at Mt. Hood Community College, the Cottage Grove junior was able to claim the state title by recording the farthest jump of the day — a mark of 44-04.75 feet — on his very first jump of the competition. Krokus had the three longest jumps of the competition and will look to defend his title in 2020 with track and field starting up again in March. “Beloved pool returns to CG, Aqua Lions” After a long 11-month closure, Cottage Grove finally got back their beloved pool. On Oct. 2, Sue Taylor, the wife of longtime CGHS water polo and swimming coach Bud Taylor, along with a former lifeguard, cut the ribbon

on the new and improved Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center in front of a crowd of about 200 eager locals. The ribbon-cutting signaled the end of a lengthy closure that, while inconvenient for local swimming enthusiasts and youth athletes, brought a myriad of improvements to a pool facility that desperately needed it after 63 years of continued service to the community.

“Freshman phenom flies into state meet” Five schools, 71 boys and girls varsity runners and, after all races concluded, only one athlete reached the finish line with a faster time than Cottage Grove freshman Jaden Owens at the 2019 Sky-Em League Cross Country Championships. Owens earned himself a place at the state championships by running one of the fastest 5k times in the state for a freshman in 2019.

YMCA expands into Cottage Grove In fall 2019, the Eugene Family YMCA expanded its program to Cottage Grove, giving parents of students at Harrison Elementary School a highly-sought afterschool option. Rachel Jackson, associate youth development director for the YMCA, was excited to show the program off to Cottage Grove. “I like that we’re able to not just be an afterschool, but an enrichment program,” said Jackson. “[The children] are learning and building new skills, whether its personal relationships or any of the other enrichment activities that we’re offering.” In February, the program expanded again to include Bohemia, Dorena and London schools, in effect offering services to all elementary schools within the South Lane School District. The space has an enrollment capacity of 45 children. In meeting the nonprofit’s stated goal of “strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” children are treated to fruit snacks, games, physical activities, cooking, art projects and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities. In addition, the program offers homework assistance to students who need it. “They also learn how to work with your friends if you’re having a disagreement – problem-solving skills and social/ emotional learning,” said YMCA Youth Development Director Holly Kriz-Anderson. “We have a service-learning component as well, which happens once a month, just showing how important it is to give back to our community or to help at school or to do something nice for somebody else.”

South Lane Schools offer new programs

B

eginning in the fall of 2019, the South Lane School District has highlighted multiple items that will receive particular attention through the 2020 school year and beyond. Perhaps chief among them will be a district-wide push to implement and standardize the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. PBIS is a system that emphasizes teaching behavior in a similar way to how a school teaches math or science, the idea being that a child cannot be reasonably expected to exhibit proper behavior without knowing what that looks like. In short, when it comes to behavior management, the general goal of PBIS is the prevention of disruptive behaviors rather than punishment — and it’s a system that works best when all parties buy in equally. In addition to PBIS, South Lane will also put special attention on prioritizing and expanding the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that already exist in the district. The focus will be further and more pointed integration of CTE into the local job market,

evaluating what programs and classes would best suit local students — and, conversely, local employers — in their future professional endeavors. Where the practice of equality in education would aim to treat every student the same, regardless of background and ability, equity goes one step further. Equitable practices in a school district operate under the concept that each student — with myriad backgrounds and

varied abilities — will need different levels of support based on their own individual situation. As an example, equality is giving each and every student five minutes of one-on-one math instruction. Equity is discerning which students already have a working understanding of a subject or activity and meting out assistance based on individual need. The district aims to tackle equity both in the classroom and on a larger scale, increasing supports for migrant and nonEnglish speaking families and students, as well as planning professional development training on equity and equitable practices for staff members. All in all, each area of focus carries with it the larger goal of improving student achievement and academic success for all students, regardless of any extenuating circumstances.

ach August, a long-held tradition of Cottage Grove returns with the Western Oregon Exposition (WOE). The mission of the fair is â€œâ€ŚTo be of service to the community [by] carrying on the American tradition of oldfashioned fun, entertainment and education in a safe, family-friendly environment.â€? A partial listing of the kid-friendly experiences to be had include: Dr. Delusion’s Comedy & Magic show, National Guard Climbing Wall, The Grand Prix Pine Car Races (build and race your own), The Swinging Rope Monkey Bridge and Open Mic. Those activities are just the beginning at the fairgrounds, located just north of Cottage Grove at 2000 N. Douglas St. (next to the CG Speedway), including: Live music, the Lumberjack Competitive Logging Show, food and craft vendors, exhibits of agricultural harvest, categories of art and handiwork, livestock and scrapbooking; demonstrations of handiwork, antique engines and farm implements, a beer and wine garden for the adults, and all through the weekend will be activities focusing on the WOE Royal Court This is not a beauty pageant. The Royal Court selects youth who have a record for working to better their community and help

develop their public speaking, etiquette skills and to grow their self-confidence. These young women and men from four age groups are encouraged to continue their academic achievements and community involvement. Throughout the year, youth selected to the court will serve as ambassadors of the Western Oregon Exposition. This down-home family fair and hometown tradition is all about the exhibitors and showcasing all of the talent within the community. Exhibitor categories include: Textiles, floral and forestry, culinary, food preservation, produce, art, craft and hobby, photography, scrapbooking and livestock. After judging, ribbons are awarded among six divisions, from pre-school to senior Cottage Grove, which has a strong agricultural background going back to its founding, has had annual exhibitions of the bounty of the rich Willamette soil since early in the 1900s. The earliest fairs leaned heavily

on grains. There was a time when the sweet pea was celebrated community-wide, then poultry The exhibits have been held in open air, at City Hall, The Armory, Jefferson School and in vacant buildings. After incorporating in 1952 and changing its name from South Lane Fair to WOE, it found a permanent home on land donated by Stanley Daugherty. Join generations of Western Oregonians as they celebrate the heritage and talents of this region at the WOE Fair. Community leaders celebrate construction of new affordable homes

N

onprofit DevNW celebrated the continuing construction of six community land trust homes in Cottage Grove in January, a project which will offer permanent homeownership for low- and middle-income families in the area. “This particular project was a labor of love and we ran into a lot of hurdles along the way,” said DevNW CEO Emily Reiman at the event. DevNW was created last year when nonprofits Neighborhood for Economic Development Corporation and Corvallis-based Willamette Neighborhood Housing Services united to increase regional impact. The nonprofit aims to empower communities through a variety of methods such as financial counseling, revitalization projects and assistance programs. The new homes under construction on Arthur Avenue are being sold to homebuyers below 80 percent of the area median income

(AMI). Cottage Grove’s AMI was estimated to be as high as $47,000 according to U.S. Census Bureau data from 2014-2018. Eligibility for ownership of the new land trust homes will be dependent on family size and annual income, ranging from an income limit of $36,350 per year for one person to $56,100 for a family of five.

DevNW to retain stewardship over the land and ideally establish a more stable and secure community. “It’s a good concept and I’m really excited about it,” said Cottage Grove Mayor Jeff Gowing. “We do need housing and this is providing homeownership. It’s proven that if you have more ownership, it’s going to give you a healthier community; people are vested in the community and they’re going to be here for the long haul.” The land trust model is also meant to encourage a long-term habit of homeownership within the community. The two-story homes are expected to be completed this summer, four of which will feature three bedrooms and the remaining two a two-bedroom design. “We hope that these six are the first of more to come,” said Reiman. “We’d like Cottage Grove to have 10 or 20 or 30 permanently affordable homeownership opportunities.”

Buyers may also qualify for up to $25,000 in down payment assistance. DevNW bought the property several years ago and has nearly completed the process of development, which included securing a land trust model which will enable more affordable housing for potential buyers. The land trust legally separates the land from the homes, allowing
