winney Wood Log Cabins are four outstanding boutique log cabins built for love, romance and luxury in the leafy woodland of Belper, Derbyshire, above the picturesque Derwent Valley. Here, couples can savour each other’s company surrounded by birdsong and natural beauty, yet also relish totally indulgent comforts such as a private hot tub, sauna and rainforest shower for two. The four rustic log cabins are crafted from red cedar and idyllically situated to capture their own special corner of the wood, as reflected in their names: Serein (n), fine rain that falls at sunset; Petrichor (n), the earthy smell that follows a rainfall; Apricity (n), the warmth the sun in winter and Komorebi (n) sunlight filtering through trees. No expense has been spared in creating these sumptuous hideaways, which are each exclusively for two adults. All are bespoke designed, with an open plan living area and kitchen warmed by a cylinder log burner. The bathrooms have double basins to go with double showers. Sliding glass doors open on to private verandas, where the hot tubs and saunas make perfect viewing stations to watch for shooting stars.
In each, a whimsical staircase leads to an open plan mezzanine floor with a king size four poster bed, free-standing bath and internal bridge leading to the first floor balcony. Comforts include not only handcrafted furniture, fresh blankets, cushions and bedding but also lovely touches like coffee machines, fluffy bathrobes and Molton Brown toiletries. While enjoying the enchanting views from each log cabin, guests may well spot foxes, badgers, deer and numerous species of birds. The area has been abundantly planted with native trees, hedging plants and a wildflower meadow to attract wildlife. years but nothing has come close. It was so tranquil and such a wonderful combination of ultra-modern and traditional. The smell, the warmth, the views, the underfloor heating, the attention to detail, it was all perfect. The owners even provided prosecco, chocolates and kindling for lighting the log burner. “You could lie on the bed or sit in the hot tub looking over the forest and the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. It was so relaxing, like staying in Heaven.” The log cabins overlook part of a World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, because of the industrial heritage generated by the River Derwent powering the cotton mills and birthing modern factory production. Celebrant spreads ‘harmony’ after finding love again through Lost and Found columns A mum of two who found love the second time around through the Lost and Found columns of her local newspaper, is using her new business to pioneer unique ideas – celebrating relationships! Celebrant Ali Fleming, from Ashbyde-la-Zouch, has become the first in the UK to offer a bespoke Harmony Glass ceremony at her weddings and funerals. The highly personalised experience – the latest to be launched by CARIAD Personal Ceremonies – marks a new collaboration with local glass artist Kayleigh Young from Market Bosworth and can even provide memorials containing a loved one’s ashes. Guests at funerals, weddings and other ceremonies are invited to come forward and pour pre-selected coloured glass crystals into a receptacle to create a bespoke piece of art to mark the occasion. This is later blown into a chosen design at Kayleigh’s studio at Shenton Railway Station where relatives are also given the option of adding ashes into the piece to create a truly bespoke memorial following a funeral. Ali, 61, said: “I’m always on the lookout for the chance to offer a mini ceremony within a ceremony. My big focus is also on the guests. The couple give a lot of thought and time to who they want with them on their day. “The guests are often sat there bored, waiting for the bar to open, looking at the couple’s backs. I love to write the ceremony so the guests themselves can be involved in the process. And over the years I’ve come up with lots of different ideas to help it all flow. “Harmony Glass is written specially into the ceremony with music playing and the family come forward and, at the same time, pour their chosen individual coloured crystals into a glass receptacle which after the ceremony gets sent to the studio to be transformed into their chosen piece of glass art. They can also order a video of it being made if they want to. “There are also six smaller pieces that can be made into unique gifts for members of the wedding party, such as baubles and paperweights etc.” Kayleigh said the ashes memorials were also becoming a more popular

The latest collaboration marks a proud chapter for entrepreneur Ali who continues to expand the business she established in her mid-fifties following a return to education. “It was all a bit of a shock being a single mum at the age of 36. I realised at this point I was going to have a carve out my own career to pay for the boys so I moved back to my home town to be near my parents and decided to take an intensive A-level course and then studied a degree. This involved me having to study in Leicester so I then uprooted myself and the two boys again,” she said. “I met my second husband Paul through a lost and found newspaper column in the Leicester Mercury. It was love at first sight! We often say we don’t know who was lost and who was found!’ “When we were planning for our wedding we went to visit a register office and I was really taken with it. I said to Paul afterwards, ‘that looks like a really nice job.’ About three months I noticed they were advertising for staff at Leicestershire Registration Service so I applied. The interview process took place in the same room we got married in!” After working as a registrar for 12 years, it was while helping plan her best friend’s wedding, that an ambitious

Alison encountered what she describes as her ‘lightbulb moment.’ She said: “She wanted to get married in her garden and we planned a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. There were so many unique themed and personalised elements they wanted, such as a string quartet and the children to do readings. “It was absolutely amazing and I thought to myself afterwards, why can’t this be done all the time? Registration is very rigid and celebrancy is the complete opposite. You have carte blanche to do whatever you like with the couple. “So I booked myself in on some residential training while I was still working and took the leap into selfemployment as a celebrant. And so CARIAD was born. The Welsh word for love, CARIAD (Ceremonies And Rituals In Any Destination) was also so-named as a romantic tribute to her own love story – with Welsh husband Paul. She said: “The most rewarding part of the weddings for me is the journey you go on with the couples, which can be up to two years, and the privilege of working so closely with them. You get to know them as if you’re a member of the family or a close friend. “When I see everybody all assembled in a ceremony and the bride walking down the aisle I love looking back and the scene gives me goose bumps. It’s lovely be part of such a wonderful journey. I call this a vocation, not a job.” But this year has brought the work of celebrants into even sharper focus as they’ve seen first-hand the raw, and often devastating, effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since lockdown Ali has helped 14 couples rearrange their postponed wedding ceremonies and, although herself forced to shield due to Paul’s underlying health conditions, says many of her colleagues conducting funerals have been through a challenging time.
She said: “I know many celebrants who went through funerals with families and it was heartbreaking with the restrictions on the number of guests allowed. There was no contact allowed with the coffin and most relatives had to rely on experiencing the funeral through a virtual link. “I was relieved it was something I didn’t have to be a part of because I know it was very traumatic and exhausting for a lot of celebrants and many of them had to take time out and seek counselling.” But Ali is now looking forward to the next chapter for CARIAD with high hopes for the Harmony Glass Experience launch. She said: “In funeral services nobody comes forward and does anything. In your traditional chapel or crematorium ceremony, everybody sits and there’s no interaction so the fact that during a quiet time of reflection in the service there is the opportunity there for family members to come forward and do the blending of glass and have the ashes added at a later stage, is unique.” Harmony Glass gift vouchers are also available to purchase. In conversation with UNIQ Furniture, upcycling and restyling furniture to its former glory and beyond UNIQ Furniture is an award winning business that takes surplus school, office and industrial furniture; repairing, refurbishing and upcycling it for a new domestic life. This month, Ruby chats with Andrew Smith, the man behind UNIQ Furniture based in Pershore. Andrew is the winner of Dragon’s Den Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday #SBS award in 2018, Wychavon’s Intelligently Green Awards in 2016 and enjoys the accolade of being followed on Instagram by Zoe Ball, George Clarke, Gail Porter and Alys Fowler (Gardener and journalist).
My typical day… My day could start with preparing a chair; I’m currently working on a customers’ grandfather’s chair who passed away last year and is therefore of great sentimental value to them. It started with thick brown gloss paint and has now been reformed into a modern piece of furniture that can be cherished forever. I could be working on a large commission or an individual upcycle from the large stock of donor items in my workshop, delivering finished products to customers, collecting salvaged furniture or even attending an auction. My work is diverse and nationwide, although has included local creations such as Wychavon’s Intelligently Green Awards from reclaimed materials. I was lucky enough to be the joint winner of the small business category award in 2016 as well as making my award! They’re a great initiative to showcase local environmentally conscious individuals and businesses.
What are your highlights?
Here’s what Andrew has to say:
My alarm goes off and… As of January 2018, I started going for a morning walk to clear my head and start the day in a positive and healthy way. I usually spend fifty minutes to an hour walking around the wetlands in Pershore. Combined with joining Pershore Tennis Centre, my aim being to get fitter, healthier and mindful too!
How did you start doing what you’re doing? I was made redundant from teaching Design & Technology from The Chase, Malvern in 2014. I looked at all of my options and as I’d always fancied starting my own business I decided to throw myself into upcycling! I knew could get hold of surplus furniture from schools and business, saving it from landfill, giving it a new life and selling it to the public for their homes. Early on in the life of my business, I was fortunate to be invited to exhibit my work at The Great Home Hack at Fulham Palace, London. The show, hosted by ‘celebrity Upcycler’ Max McMurdo, really opened up a number of opportunities for me!

In 2018 I was the winner of Dragon’s Den Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday #SBS Award which gave me a great platform to highlight upcycling across the UK as well as joining a growing exclusive network of winners. As well as winning Wychavon’s Intelligently Green Awards in 2016 I was also involved with Grand Designs live, delivering workshops to demonstrate and involve the public in creating a product from reclaimed materials at the show. I’ve been lucky to be involved with various TV shows and filming with budding directors as a ‘guinea pig’ for BBC’s Director’s course run out of BBC Wood Norton, near Evesham. I’ve appeared on The French Collection with Mark Franks (where enthusiasts head to France, buy items at French markets, bring them back to UK and upcycle them to sell in a UK city). Finally, I popped up on Gok Wan’s Fill your house for free, showcasing my work to inspire viewers!
Who or what has been your biggest influence? As a designer/engineer/maker, I have long been an admirer of Leonardo Da Vinci! A while ago, I visited
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to see some of the old masters work in the flesh as part of the UK tour of the Royal Collection. Seeing his drawings from the 15th century, inches away was incredible! He was so amazingly talented in so many different genres and so ahead of his time in his thinking, you can’t fail to be inspired by him! The main influence in my life would be my Dad, who taught me to try anything, having led by example all through his life.
What’s your biggest bugbear? Lack of time… Although this is partly my own doing, as I’m a procrastinator and not always well organised and focussed. I’m particularly bad at prioritising and pretty easily distracted!
What do you want to be when you grew up?! An architect! In school I thought I wasn’t clever enough – but later discovered that I was! I left school at 16 and did a toolmaking apprenticeship with Austin Rover, then realised it wasn’t for me so went into education via an HND in Mechanical and Production Engineering. From that, I undertook a teaching course and I taught Design & Technology for over 28 years in various schools across the UK!
Where can you mostly be found after work? At home with my family, playing tennis at Pershore Tennis Centre or playing snooker at the social club in Pershore.
Best piece of advice? Not directly advice, more a philosophy shared by Mr Rod Stewart in the lyrics of The Killing of Georgie, which reads as follows… Georgie once said to me and I quote, He said... “Never wait or hesitate Get in kid, before it’s too late You may never get another chance ‘Cause youths a mask but it don’t last Live it long and live it fast”
Georgie was a friend of mine... If you’re interested in saving a piece of furniture from landfill, here are my top ten tips: 1. Start with a quality item from the 40s/50/60s, preferably made from solid wood. 2. Try sourcing something cheaply from a local auction or charity shop. 3. If you are looking for something specific, search sites like EBay or Facebook marketplace for bargains. 4. Prepare the item very thoroughly by using paint/varnish stripper, sanding etc. 5. AVOID chalk paint! (my personal pet hate!) 6. Use a stain block paint (such as Zinsser Cover Stain) as an undercoat over previously varnished wood. 7. Use a small roller for large areas and paint brushes for details. (Use quality brands! You get what you pay for with paint and brushes) 8. BE CREATIVE! Push yourself to try new things. YouTube has instructional videos for EVERYTHING! 9. Limitless inspiration for projects can be found online, but specifically take a look at Pinterest and Instagram, then do your own thing! 10.
