Wild, peaceful and traffic-free Scottish isle

Cosy, well-equipped cottages enable holidaymakers to enjoy the wilds of Hebridean life on the privately owned Island of Shuna. This remote, eco-friendly hideaway comes with many grazing sheep, an astonishing amount of wildlife and just one resident human family. The family, island managers Rob & Kathryn James and their young daughter, ensure that all is well on this 1,000 acre slice of paradise standing in waters which attract dolphins, seals and even basking sharks.

The seven letting properties are all dog friendly and individually cater for two to 12 people. Rob and Kathryn collect their visitors from the mainland by boat and deliver them back at the end of their break.

Guests are free to roam at will on Shuna, exploring features such as ancient burial sites and abandoned limestone workings. They can see – although not enter –Victorian castle ruins and may well come across wandering deer, see majestic white-tailed sea eagles soaring overhead or glimpse otters playing around the shores. Occasionally, a golden eagle may happen by. Visitors often feel a deep connection with nature and with those who farmed the land and fished the seas before them.

The cottages are mainly on the north end of the island, positioned to make the most of outstanding views and locations. The largest, South End House, faces beautiful Jura Sound. The newly built Boat House sits next to a pier at the water’s edge. Motorised boats are provided with each letting. After some safety instruction, these and a small fleet of kayaks can be used to get around beautiful bays within designated safe sailing waters.

All the houses are furnished and equipped to high standards and benefit from renewable energy. Guests love swapping tales of the day’s adventures beside a living log fire, and there are plenty of books and games to entertain. The dark night skies provide their own wow factor, especially for visitors unused to seeing them unsullied by urban light pollution.

Reinvent Yourself

If evidence of your New Year Resolutions disappeared without trace in January, take heart. The real New Year is yet to come! For many cultures, past and present, the real New Year is not in January but in March, at the Spring Equinox, when the hours of daylight and darkness equal out and the Sun enters the first zodiac sign of Aries. Here in the northern hemisphere, we start gaining more daylight and nature begins its new cycle of rebirth and renewal.

At this time, people naturally feel re-energised and ready to reinvent themselves. That’s why there’s a tradition of spring cleaning, with its twin activity of decluttering. It’s a far more logical time to start a new year than January and way more conducive to new fitness routines, better eating habits and –being around the start of a new financial year as well – improved financial planning.

It’s a great time for injecting fresh style and elegance into the home with a spot of redecorating or DIY, and also for discovering or enhancing your creative flair. Check out our advertisers, Artisically Wyred and Colour Wheel, for classes and workshops to inspire, empower and enthuse!

our top eleven SCOTTISH HIDDEN GEMS

Our selection of Scottish Hidden Gems are genuine treasures, each unique and bursting with potential for making memories that will last the rest of your lifetime. We have scanned the landscape from border to border, sea to sea, uncovering amazing places in the Highland wilds, the island nooks and crannies and serene settings on the mainland.

One of our finds is Doune, a car-free zone on the secluded west coast Knoydart Peninsula, a sustainable, off-grid, shoreside location where you fall asleep to the sound of waves and awaken to birdsong.

Knoydart last year hosted the launch of Scottish Forestry’s strategy to restore and expand Scotland’s temperate rainforest habitat and Doune’s owners are fully committed to the Net Zero goals of the project.

Situated on Knoydart, known for its inaccessibility and dramatic landscapes, Doune Knoydart Restaurant and Rooms provides an authentic Scottish Highland experience that blends adventure with comfort. Idyllic Highland getaway with private beach & outstanding wildlife

Great experiences start on arrival at Sunart Adventures, when guests first encounter the company’s two luxurious, dog-friendly lodges on the shores of beautiful Loch Sunart. Here, they have private use of a sandy beach and 10 acres of Highland magic to explore. This is place where people find peace, solitude, excitement and a unique experience of Scotland’s rare and thriving wildlife, which frequently appears up close and personal!

The elevated position of the lodges gives magnificent views over the rugged Ardnamurchan and Morvern Peninsulas and across to Mull and the Atlantic Ocean. Spacious verandas provide ideal viewing platforms for the red deer and white-tailed sea eagles which are frequent visitors. Passing whales often acknowledge their human admirers by blowing a spout. Remarkably, Scotland’s critically endangered pine martens are regulars here. It’s easy to coax them out to putter and play in full view.

Lodge owner Dan Klein says: “When our guests arrive, we always give them a bottle of wine and a tub of peanut butter. The peanut butter isn’t for them, it’s for the pine martens. Put a little of that on the decking and along they come. They can’t resist!”

People staying with Sunart Adventures can choose whether they simply relax and enjoy the surroundings or take themselves off into the landscape on foot, by bike or on water, perhaps rock climbing on a dormant volcano or kayaking around the picturesque bays. Drivers approach by the famously beautiful Road to the Isles, while photographers and film crews return again and again. People go fishing, book whale-watching cruises, paint pictures and explore deep history.

The lodges themselves are ideal for either families or one, two or three couples sharing. They are rustic in style, purpose-designed for comfy, cosy and carefree stays, each with two king-sized first floor bedrooms and one ground floor twin room, all of them en-suite.

Generous downstairs living areas offer magnificent views and incorporate well-equipped kitchens, seating and dining space. Upstairs, gallery landings can be used as snugs. The lodges are served by satellite TV, DVD players and Wi-Fi, plus electric vehicle charging points.

Sunart Adventures are passionate about outdoor pursuits and know Ardnamurchan intimately, so they can help their guests achieve maximum satisfaction from their holiday. They also pride themselves on giving exceptional service, happy to stock food cupboards, arrange day trips, provide equipment or help plan an itinerary.

Dan says: “We have many great contacts and can help people to create a truly bespoke experience.”

TENBY

our top nine WELSH HIDDEN GEMS

Sometimes the joy of a holiday is discovering places off the beaten track. Our next two Hidden Gems are dog and family friendly selfcatering properties in superb coastal locations with extensive sea views, even though their locations may sound unfamiliar.

Golwg y Graig overlooks one of two gorgeous beaches in Aberporth, on the Ceredigion coastline, with village amenities just

a stroll away. Clean and certified plastic-free, it’s great for swimming, kayaking, birdwatching and, occasionally, dolphin-spotting.

To see those dolphins at closer quarters, take a wildlife boat trip from the Marine Wildlife Centre in New Quay, about 16 miles away. There, you may also spot part of the Dylan Thomas trail, possibly the inspiration for the colourful contents of Under Milk Wood.

ABERPORTH

Amazing sea views from Golwg y Graig at the beach

With breathtaking beach and bay views from nearly every room, Golwg y Graig overlooks Aberporth’s family-friendly Dolwen Beach which is lifeguarded in summer. Situated just steps from the All Wales Coast Path, it’s ideal for family beach holidays or walkers exploring Ceredigion’s stunning coastline. Furnished in a modern seaside style, you can be on the beach in seconds to swim, sunbathe, paddle board, or explore the rock pools. Or simply unwind with a book on the window seats, or watch dolphins in the bay from the sunny conservatory.

Golwg y Graig offers panoramic views from one of Aberporth’s prime beachfront locations. Sleeping six in three bedrooms (two doubles and a twin), the house features pretty enclosed gardens offering a relaxing and wildlife friendly haven with outdoor furniture for meals or lounging and is within walking distance of village amenities, including seasonal cafés, pubs serving food, takeaways, and a village shop for provisions. A modular sofa bed in the study can be arranged as a double bed for two extra guests. This room also has a Smart TV and a desk with a stunning sea view, perfect for remote work.

Explore nearby Cardigan with it’s historic castle, visit the beaches along Ceredigion’s heritage coast, Tresaith, Llangrannog and New Quay, or visit the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Come and stay in this spacious cottage in this beautiful location and make lasting holiday memories.

The Forge at Southerndown is full of character from its past as farm buildings for Dunraven Estates and guests often walk to the walled garden which remains of the original Dunraven Castle on the hill facing it. Southerndown has a west-facing beach creating good surf and, it seems, decent filming conditions. Dr Who was recently there. For people who prefer surfing stores to waves, bargain buys are available from around 70 stores at Bridgend Designer Outlet, just five miles away.

Historic Charm Meets Modern Comfort

The Forge, steeped in history, dates back several centuries and was once part of the Dunraven Estate. Originally serving as a granary, stable, and forge for Southerndown Farm, it has been thoughtfully converted into a charming holiday retreat. The surrounding farmland, visible from the upstairs window, remains part of the Dunraven Estate and is now let to local farmers.

Perched nearby, Dunraven Castle once stood atop the hill facing The Forge. Although the castle was destroyed by fire in the 1960s, the walled garden endures and makes for a delightful walk from the property via the beach.

The Forge’s bedroom was formerly used to shoe horses and manage estate metalwork, while The Stable housed two horses. The stable’s original doorway has been preserved as a window, and the upstairs window replaces the former grain hatch. During renovations, historic tools were uncovered and are displayed on the windowsill above the stairs.

The property now offers two familyfriendly bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and modern amenities including a hot tub, Wi-Fi, and a wood burner. With its enclosed garden, proximity to local attractions, and festive decorations for Christmas and Easter, The Forge is a perfect blend of heritage and hospitality.

Just a couple of miles from the seaside resort of Bridlington are the three lovely holiday cottages of North Kingsfield. They’re welcoming and in one case pet friendly – and your horse can come too! There’s an on-site livery yard to this complex of farmhouse-style cottages created from a former medieval barn. Expect period character coupled with modern luxuries including en-suite facilities and private hot tubs.

Our holiday cottages on the Yorkshire coast offer luxurious accommodation close to Bridlington, East Yorkshire. Our accommodation comprises three beautifully designed and furnished farmhouse style holiday cottages just 2 miles from Bridlington’s awardwinning beaches.

With a pet-friendly cottage and on-site livery yard, you can stay in a dog-friendly cottage and/or bring your own horse for riding holidays to enjoy walks or rides on the beach or across the Yorkshire Moors National Park.

Set on a working farm in open countryside, the cottages are in the coastal village of Fraisthorpe and guests can use five acres of gorgeous grounds which include woodland, a duck pond and a children’s play area. They also have complimentary use of a local leisure club/spa.

Bridlington has a great reputation for pleasing holidaymakers of all ages with its award-winning beaches, bustling

harbour, seafront funfair and multitude of places to eat and drink. The Old Town was one of the filming locations for Dad’s Army with its narrow streets and historic buildings.

Birdwatchers love Bempton Cliffs, the RSPB ‘seabird city’ just along the coast, while Sewerby Hall and Gardens is another popular tourist destination, with attractions including a zoo and Grade One listed house.

Superb new purpose-built apartments for the over 55s are now available to buy at Albion Meadows, a superior retirement complex in the delightful and rural Worcestershire village of Hanley Swan. Linked to the existing care home of Albion Lodge, the 16 new apartments of Albion Meadows are aimed at the active over 55s and offer independent living in one and two-bedroomed apartments, but with the safeguard of 24 hour on-call support.

Albion Lodge will in 2025 be celebrating its 40th anniversary as a family-run complex started by the Darwent family. It was established by Colin and Jean Darwent with the ethos that residents should be looked after with dignity and respect, as if they were their own relatives. That deeply-held conviction remains in place today and the residents of Albion Meadows will enjoy the best of facilities and services in their new homes.

The apartments are beautifully presented in tasteful, contemporary style and wellequipped, all with level access showers, ample storage, flexible rooms and spacious balconies. Residents have use of an allotment garden and there are easily accessible meadow walks straight from the door.

They also have shared facilities including a gymnasium, hairdresser’s, treatment room, restaurant and comfortable owners’ lounge where they can make and meet friends in a sociable setting. The home is strongly linked with the local community, so residents feel a strong sense of belonging.

The whole complex sits in a pictureperfect village within walking distance of a pleasant gastro-pub, a well-stocked shop/Post Office and a duck pond, along with countryside views to the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Residents who drive will be within easy reach of the pleasant towns of Malvern, Ledbury and Upton upon Severn, as well as the Three Counties Showground with its busy programme of events.

True origins of Valentine’s Day have become blurred, but the day is undoubtedly the most romantic of the year for many and a source of admonishment for those who forget it! So, if you have a partner you love and value, remember February 14th in time to acquire the red roses, heartshaped lockets or other tokens needed to ensure love runs smooth. NB Hereford Gold has the perfect choices, whether your love is embryonic, passionate or enfolded in many years of happy marriage.

Tales vary, but St Valentine seems to have been a priest who secretly married Roman soldiers to their lovers at a

time when Emperor Claudius forbade his soldiers marrying. Valentine was condemned to death as punishment, but fell in love with a jailor’s daughter and, shortly before execution, sent her a love letter signed ‘from your Valentine,’ so starting our modern tradition.

Over time, Valentine’s Day has been widened to encompass not just romantic love but love between friends, parents and children, even pets. Self-love is the very foundation of healthy relationships, so ensure you spread the love to yourself as well, perhaps through the organic supplements of Signature Botanics.

“When recommending Signature Botanics, the word “service” undervalues the knowledge, heartfelt care and support my family receive. Signature Botanics are passionate about their products and passionate about helping people. Signature Botanics has helped my family with controlling seizures, anxiety and menopause, and with a tailored plan of supplements and bespoke oils, our lives have drastically improved.” – Katy
