Escape to Shetland

If the spirit of adventure is yours, you can give it a great workout by visiting Shetland, an archipelago of around 100 islands at the extreme north of the UK. Unst is the most northerly of them all, closer to Bergen, Norway than to Inverness, Scotland. Depending on season, that makes it the most likely place spot the ethereal night sky spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, not to mention orcas, dolphins, puffins, kittiwakes and giant skuas, not to mention the wild roaming tiny Shetland ponies.

Kayakers love exploring Shetland’s fabulous sea caves, uninhabited islands and beaches including some to rival Caribbean beauty with their white sand and turquoise waters. Other adventurers travelling on foot, by bike or by vehicle taken themselves off to explore the remarkable geology, including the remains and legacy of Eshaness, an extinct volcano.

Shetland was colonised by Vikings in the 9th century. Even though the Scots later reclaimed the territory, in Unst, Shetland’s rich Viking heritage is evident and proudly owned by islanders, including the family owners of our featured holiday accommodation, Belmont House.

This splendid property is both peaceful and inspiring and a fabulous base from which to explore the treasures of the Norse explorers, traders and characters of history. Unst is home to at least 60 Viking longhouses, the highest density anywhere. A longhouse and a replica Viking longship, the Skidbladner, can be visited at at Haroldswick, while Unst Heritage Centre and Unst Boat Haven also host exhibitions.

Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement at Sumburgh is a must see for every Shetland visitor, tracing 4,000 years of successful and innovate human settlement from earliest times. More modern history makes Shetland an important contributor to national security and a WW2 radar station was reactivated in 2019.

While many Shetlanders are involved with traditional means of earning a living, such as crofting, quarrying, knitting and fish farming, the islands are at the cutting edge of 21st century enterprises, including the clean energy revolution. The world’s first tidal power station, opened in 2016 in Bluemull Sound, waters overlooked by Belmont House. Unst even has its own space station, SaxaVord Spaceport, licenced to host up to 30 rocket launches a year.

Visitors can also enjoy film tourism, discovering sites used in the popular BBC crime drama Shetland, where detectives led by DI Jimmy Perez demonstrate their ingenious sleuthing.

I must mention this before I forget - do not miss the chip van every Thursday night outside the pub at 6pm - you will not get better fish and chips :)

ESCAPE TO FIFE

Fife is an ancient Scottish kingdom which has transitioned into a remarkable modern holiday hotspot. The term can even be used literally. The East Neuk of Fife – a coastal area taking in the little fishing villages on the Firth of Forth - have their own microclimate of generally milder weather than the rest of Scotland. That makes walks along the picturesque Fife Coast Path and its glorious beaches all the more enjoyable.

LEVEN

The Neuk – Gaelic for ‘nook’ - takes in various grand houses and castles, and even more places to enjoy the numerous locally caught, grown and perfected varieties of food and drink. Pittenweem offers sights and experiences not to be missed as the harbour welcomes its early morning fishing boats to supply the daily market. Visitors enjoy visiting ancient priory ruins, the grand Kellie Castle with its fragrant, Arts & Crafts era gardens and St Fillan’s Cave, a place of homage to a 7th century miracle worker.

But more than just a spectacular setting, it’s the gateway to popular tourist destinations, golf havens and culinary hot spots so you can sample the best of what Scotland has to offer. Take things as slow and leisurely or as on-the-go as you like.

From activities and sightseeing to food and drink — let us know what your trip of a lifetime looks like, and we’ll make it happen.

Whip up a feast in the fully equipped kitchen, eat and be merry in the generous dining room, relax by the fire in the cosy lounge and sleep off celebrations in one of seven wellappointed bedrooms.

Madeira has 6 cottages which can be rented individually or as a whole. We welcome guests who want to use Madeira as a base to explore all The East Neuk has to offer, or simply to relax in the calm, tranquil atmosphere within the ground of Madeira as well as those guests who’d like to rent Madeira Exclusively for an event.

Our well-equipped, comfortable, and stylish cottages are perfect for a short stay or an annual holiday all year round.

As soon as we drove up the drive the first time we had a feeling that Madeira was a special place. This feeling has not left us and you will feel it too. The ancient tress, Victorian wall, and the south facing aspect mean you are sheltered and its definitely warmer in the garden than on the road or fields.

Guests come here for peace and quiet, often to write or paint, bird watch or to use the holiday cottage as a relaxing home from home, a base to come back to after a day exploring the East Neuk and Fife.

Equally if you are looking for a chilled place to spend time with friends you will find Madeira offers you everything you need.

Exclusive Events

Madeira is the perfect setting for a small wedding, an intimate gathering or for a group of friends to meet. We have 16 individual beds, and 28 bed spaces in the cottages (if all sofa-beds are used, not counting cots) and The Bothy has been designed to allow up to 32 people to sit down to eat.

The magic of Madeira is the garden, and we have created lots of wee spots where a wedding or christening can take place. It’s very rustic and natural and you can have your ceremony under an apple tree, in the woods by the snow drops or blue bells, in The Bothy or perhaps at The Dell. The Victorian walled garden with its lawn and orchard can also be used for the ceremonial part of your celebration.

Escape to Kirkwall

Kirkwall is the largest town in Orkney, and a great place from which to explore the fascinating islands north of mainland Scotland, known for the rugged beauty of their unspoilt landscapes and the rare wildlife that lives within, from puffins to white tailed eagles.

Staying at The Smiddy – a converted woollen mill - puts guests within walking distance of Kirkwall town centre, where attractions include the Romanesque St Magnus Cathedral, Orkney Wireless Museum and a modern addition, Deerness Distillery, producing artisan gin and vodka.

Some 52 of 74 ships were sunk, the rest beached in shallow water by British guard boat crews. Seven wrecks remain, making this one of the world’s premier dive sites.

Orkney’s more ancient history can be admired at many locations including Skara Brae, with well-preserved prehistoric houses complete with stone beds, and the Ring of Brodgar, Scotland’s largest Neolithic stone circle.

The Foveran restaurant has stunning sea views across historic Scapa Flow and it is the perfect location to relax, unwind and savour the taste of Orkney.

Escape to Perthshire

Perth is a fascinating place to visit at any time of year, providing a rich treasure trove of all things Scottish, including trout and salmon fishing, whisky, Highland Games and unspoiled countryside. The area is renowned worldwide for golf, especially the ‘Glorious Playground’ of Gleneagles, which in 2024 is celebrating its centenary with a calendar of special events.

Whether staying at The Townhouse in the city itself - ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ – or perhaps in the countryside of Fairygreen Cottage, you’ll have no shortage of choice.

The city offers excellent shopping and hospitality on its streets, alongside notable parks and museums including that of the Black Watch royal regiment, while the countryside has notable attractions including Scone Palace, the 5 Star attraction where Macbeth and Robert the Bruce were crowned.

Launched in 2019 is the Cateran Ecomuseum, a scenic outdoor ‘museum without walls.’ At its heart is the circular Cateran Trail straddling the Perthshire/Angus border. It was used by marauding clan warriors notorious for cattle rustling from the 13th to 17th centuries. Now is a designated walking trail.

Fairygreen Cottage is a stunning detached cottage at Fairygreen Farm, situated at the foot of the Sidlaw Hills in rural Perthshire. Nestled among fields and hills, this peaceful cottage boasts beautiful panoramic views of the Sidlaw Hills.

This single storey cottage has been newly decorated and furnished to a high standard. There are two spacious bedrooms, one with an ensuite and the other situated right next to the second bathroom. The second bedroom can be made up into either a king bed or a twin room with two single beds, depending on the arrangements required.

Nothing is more important to a woman than her health. Feeling good, inside and out, is the key to happiness and wellbeing in the world, a sense of joy in the simple fact of being alive. Some ways of getting to enjoy that allround health are harder work than others, but whether you’re a sporty teen, a lifelong fitness fiend, an exerciseaverse 30-something or a more mature, take-it-easy kind of woman, all of them involve caring enough about yourself to make it real. That takes time and, usually, money, but always remember, you’re worth it!

Why not kick-start your new wellbeing journey with a few days’ preparatory peace retreat to really relax, unwind and get in the mood, or, perhaps, a luxurious visit to Mallory Court Country House & Spa? This award-winning paradise with views to breathtaking Warwickshire countryside provides members with use of a state-of-the-art gym and a thermal retreat featuring a hydrotherapy pool, salt sauna, steam room and outdoor vitality pool for engaging work-outs to trim, tone and strengthen the body. Within this amazing complex, the Elan Spa offers an array of bespoke treats and treatments, from skin-enhancing facials to deep massage, as well as exquisite lunches and perhaps the odd glass of bubbly.

Among our other advertisers, women can enjoy greater wellbeing through specialisms as varied as weight loss experts, Reiki healing, strength training and podiatry to ensure that your wellness extends all the way from your well-massaged scalp to your prettily painted toes.

In the past few years there has come to be much greater awareness of the menopause, perimenopause and their many possible complications, from hot flushes to urinary complaints, mood swings to sexual dysfunction, tiredness to headaches. Hormone Replacement Therapy, counselling, and simply being in the know can all help in dealing with these troublesome conditions.

While many people will feel drawn to the gym, or perhaps pounding the streets, yoga provides a lifelong practice renowned for its mental and even spiritual benefits, as well as for improving and maintaining physical flexibility, strength, balance, breath control and all-round health. Classes are available almost everywhere and you don’t need to be double-jointed or super-bendy to start.

However you’d like your summer self-care and wellbeing routine to shape up, you’re sure to find your perfect starting point right here in these pages.

Starting a new business during perimenopause is not as hard as you think...said

no woman, ever!

Jen, the Founder of Evolve Weight Loss, an alternative to Slimming Groups, talks openly about the importance of Women’s Wellness whilst trying to balance family life and running a successful start-up.

As a teenager in school, I struggled with my weight from the age of twelve. On the outside, I was the joker who made fun of myself before anyone else could, but beneath the humour, I was plagued by insecurity and low self-esteem.

Fast-forward 30 years (Shush!) and TBH, I’m still haunted by the ghost of my younger self rattling inside my brain! Now, you add the brain fog, the hot flushes, lack of sleep and let’s not forget the periods that last for weeks. I often wonder how I managed to start a new business and continue being a mum, a wife and seemingly the only person prepared to walk or bath the dog.

You don’t have to put up with it - you can do things about it. I know it’s not easy, small steps equal results. I’m a woman, and women are fab human beings! Yip, that’s right - GSD (Getting Sh#t Done) is the only way I can get through the day. Sod the brain fog, those thoughts will

come back to me later. Hot flushes, bring ‘em on, I have Raynaud’s disease so welcome the heat. Sleep, nah - that’s when I schedule all my social media. Everlasting period...we don’t need to go into that one!

So, I have a clear and simple message to any wantrepreneur thinking of going for it.

Don’t listen to the naysayers, including the voice in your head. As for your body that’s trying so hard every day to break you - don’t let it win - GSD.

Be kind to yourself & never let anyone dull your sparkle, Jen x

We’ve already had some great weather, but now it’s time to plan ahead for the summer proper and ensure you have a sensational season.

There are great days to be had in and around Royal Leamington Spa, with its great offering of shops, restaurants and recreation areas including a beautiful riverside park. Worcestershire’s Whitlenge Gardens will enchant all-comers, whether children dressing up in search of hidden fairy folk or gardeners seeking creative inspiration.

The Cotswold hideaway of Kelmscott Manor gives fascinating insights into the lives of creative geniuses of the Arts & Crafts era, while Severn Valley Railway never fails to please with its vintage steam and diesel trains chuffing through scenic countryside. Perhaps you’d like to hire a narrowboat for the most relaxing of waterway journeys, or let Royal Motorways drive you

to one of their fabulous range of day trip destinations. You could even do something really amazing, like investigate changing a child’s life through Phoenix Fostering.

If you’re staying local, Boyds of Worcester will supply everything you need to welcome visitors into your home and garden. If you’re partying, Cotswold Balloon provides extra special effects! Our featured heating specialists will help you stay cool all summer and warm when winter returns.

You’ll want to look your best, of course, so, book in with Be Gorgeous Always & Forever for a first rate makeover and top off your look with something superb from Hereford Gold!

What makes Canada Green so special...

The ingredients in our Canada Green that gives a lush green lawn is the species of Creeping Red Fescue in our mix called Boreal. A seed which is farmed in the Peace River region of Alberta, Canada, where temperatures vary between +35°c in summer and -40°c in winter. Boreal is so hardy it stays green even under snow and will survive the hottest British summers.

If you want your lawn to be lush and green all year, over seed now with Canada Green.

• Survives in scorching heat, drought & freezing cold

• Resistant to wear-and-tear from children & pets

• Resistant to insects, diseases & choke out weeds

• Grows green and hardy in any climate

• Put an end to bare spots, stop erosions

Before...

Even grows in impossible spots! Problem areas that are bare, shady, weedy or hilly! After...

So easy to transform your lawn!
