Scents On The Green - luxury fragrance brands in a beautiful Cotswolds setting. Choosing perfume just graduated from being a retail treat to an inspirational life experience thanks to Scents On The Green, a newcomer to the Cotswolds in the heart of historic Broadway. With a wide ranging portfolio of luxury fragrance brands, this specialist retailer offers unhurried consultations to help customers find the perfect additions for their personal fragrance wardrobe. Owner Margie Shiers has spent more than 30 years working in fragrance and beauty, building vast knowledge of different brands’ ranges and their subtleties. She has worked with exclusive boutiques and renowned retailers, such as Harrods, Selfridges,
Harvey Nichols, Liberty, Fortnum & Mason, and John Lewis. Despite the uncertainty surrounding retail during the pandemic, she decided to transfer all her expertise and love of fragrance into opening a perfumery of her own, bringing together some of her favourite established brands while also providing a showcase for new talent and innovative creations. On December 5, 2020, Scents On The Green opened in the charming surroundings of a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1700. The premises have been fitted out with great respect for the building and its beautiful location, which is often photographed by tourists in summer when the
entrance is framed by ancient flowering wisteria. Customers have their pick of an extensive and wonderful range of fine perfumes, some of them classics, such as the timeless Chanel N°5 – 100 years old this year – some highly sought after such as those by Acqua di Parma, Atkinsons, Ormonde Jayne London and Van Cleef and Arpels, and others such as Gallivant and La Maison J.U.S from a new generation of perfumers.
When customers call, they enter a delightful world of indulgence and faultless service as Margie and her team help them through their choices, perhaps building a collection of fragrances for work, night life, family time, or special occasions such as wedding days. “Customers often stay an hour or more,” says Margie. “I want them to find something they will really love. Fragrance is a very personal thing. I like to give them the time to be absolutely sure.”

Kookachoo is run by carpenter Tim Allard and his wife, Koo. They specialise in free-standing furniture items, either hand crafted from scratch or upcycled from older pieces into something truly original. Frequently, customers have their own thoughts about a piece of furniture to fit a particular nook or cranny, or to enhance a larger area. If they want a feature dining set to seat a big family, Kookachoo can make it. If they’ve seen a chest they would like, but not in the right dimensions for their room, Kookachoo can produce it to the correct size and give it any finish desired.

He also makes items to his own design and buys in pieces they simply see and like, altering them to taste or incorporating them into other designs, working in high quality natural wood such as oak, elm or walnut. Tim collaborates with local metalworkers to provide steel or cast iron frames and fittings, and in producing his personally designed ‘Industrial Style’ pieces. The range includes tables, chairs, coffee tables, dressers bookcases, benches, and garden furniture. Koo says: “A lot of the furniture you see on the high street is much of a muchness, but if someone wants something unique, they can come to us, and they won’t have to remortgage to get it! A lot of people think as soon as you use words like ‘bespoke’ and ‘customised,’ that the price will be through the roof, but that isn’t so. The cost depends on how much time goes into the piece, but our prices are certainly not ridiculous for something with individuality and quality.”

STYLE YOUR HOME There are great things to be enjoyed about restyling your home, whether in part or in total. A new bathroom can be utterly transforming, especially with modern wetrooms and power showers, while fitted bedrooms can bring luxury to where you need it most. Sometimes a modest space can be transformed to a highly useful home office or a playroom. The trick to these lifechanging improvements is to find a reliable specialist, first to draw up
designs in line with your personal preferences and budget, then to carry out the fitting. Most sole traders carry out the main carpentry and joinery work themselves, bringing wide experience to the role. Many have trusted trade friends to complete the electrics, plumbing, plastering, tiling or decorating, so they take care of everything and the customer doesn’t have to worry about a thing.

Editor’s Choice Lansec, Specialised glazing for listed properties Owners of listed buildings, rural cottages and other heritage properties can solve their draughty windows with one easy call to Lansec, specialists in bespoke secondary glazing. This niche company installs custom made high quality units which fit inside the original windows, leaving the historic appearance unaltered while adding a range of modern benefits such as cosier rooms, lower heating bills and reduced outside noise. Planning laws concerning historic buildings and Conservation Areas are notoriously difficult and
expensive to comply with, but Lansec has all the answers at cost effective rates. This local company has more than 20 years’ experience and a small team of craftsmen carpenters to ensure that each and every window fits perfectly.
Business owner Dave Priscott says: “We specialise in heritage properties where the design of the windows plays a vital part in the character of the property, but where single glazing causes draughts and heat loss and gives little protection against noise.
The secondary glazing units are always made in the appropriate style and colour, opening horizontally or vertically and even being removable for easy cleaning. They reduce condensation, form an extra barrier against burglars and improve lives by keeping the heat in and noise out.
“We pay meticulous attention to detail and take pride in getting the job done right, not just getting it done quickly.” All Lansec work is fully guaranteed and insured. Call now for a free consultation.

Railway Yarns,
keeping knitters chuffed. Crafters from absolute beginners to innovative experts feed their hobby at Railway Yarns, a friendly, independent shop sourcing knitting wools from quality suppliers around the UK and beyond. Opening the shop was a dream come true for Gillian Orford after she moved back to England from Australia in 2012. Gillian has been a knitter all her life and loves the range of yarns that enable her and her fellow enthusiasts to create a dynamic range of handmade clothes, toys and accessories. At Railway Yarns, Ledbury, customers can find anything from the natural wool of Shetland sheep to luxury silk, from merino to alpaca wool and many, many more varieties, in a sumptuous range of colours, blends and textures. Gillian has a crafting room where she holds classes to get people started in knitting, crochet, quilting, patchwork and needle felting. She also rents out the space for other people to hold their own classes or crafting get-togethers, and she plans to relaunch a ‘Knit & Natter’ group as soon as COVID restrictions end. “Knitting is a very social, sharing kind of hobby,” she says. “We all learn from each other and there is usually cake involved. “It is a very tactile hobby. The pleasure comes not just from the end product but from the whole process, touching, feeling and working with the yarns.” Railway Yarns, Unit 6, Station Industrial Estate, The Homend, Ledbury HR8 1AR T 07854 863312 E railwayyarns@hotmail.com www.railwayyarns.co.uk

It may also follow the onset of dementia, making it increasingly risky for them to continue staying in their own home.

Caring cremations for beloved pets As heartbreaking as it is to lose a much loved pet, comfort can be found in giving a fitting and caring farewell. Cotswold Pet Cremation provides a compassionate individual cremation service for dogs, cats, and other pets, so owners can feel assured they have had the best possible final journey. Owners Lisa and Simon are animal lovers themselves. It was thinking about what lay ahead for their own special dogs that led them to start this service. They were especially insistent that their dogs would be treated with care and dignity throughout, and that there should be no possibility of another animal’s ashes being mixed with theirs. Lisa says: “We can absolutely guarantee that individual comfort and care, as we only ever cremate one animal at a time. We treat every one as if they are our own.”

rood Farm Shop is the countryside family food and drink venue that keeps getting better and better. It has a fabulous range of locally sourced fresh foods, an excellent café and a local gastropub. Now it is adding an outdoor bar, picnic area and two stretch tents where people can relax with an early evening glass of something special in very pleasant surroundings. Brood was designed with the idea of farmers, customers, staff, independent suppliers and the local community all supporting one another and keeping ‘food miles’ to a minimum. Owners Claire Davis and Phil Oliver produce their own beef, lamb, pork, chicken and eggs to the highest standard from their Redditch based farming operation, tracking each stage from farm to fork. They grow

fruit, vegetables, plants and herbs themselves and source homemade preserves, bakery products, craft ales and ciders and other gourmet products from specialist producers around Worcestershire and surrounding counties. Creative chefs produce the finest dishes from these very sources to serve in the family friendly café, which is open all day. They also create an appetising range of ready meals for sale to the public. The Brood pub, the Lygon Arms at Feckenham, likewise serves a great range of quality lunchtime and evening meals. The farm shop also sells gifts, hampers and household items such as beauty products and cleaning materials. A ‘Click & Collect’ service is available for people who prefer to shop online rather than visit in
person. It is free on orders of £40 or more. Brood ’s newest feature is the outdoor bar, now open and currently running with table service. Head Butcher Antony Fletcher says: “It’s a very nice setting in which to enjoy a glass of wine or a refreshing beer on a summer’s evening. There are some toys for children to play on and some outdoor games such as giant Jenga. Family is at the heart of everything we do here.” Brood Farm Shop, Astwood Lane, Astwood Bank, Redditch B96 6PS T 01527 868698 E admin@brood.co.uk www.brood.co.uk Lygon Arms, Droitwich Road, Feckenham B96 6JE T 01527 892800 E bookings@thelygon.co.uk

The Almonry, bringing Evesham’s rich past into focus Dating from the 14th century, The Almonry is Evesham’s treasure house of the past, a focal point for the events which have shaped the town and its activities from prehistoric times to the present day. It offers visitors priceless services, from a museum housing eclectic collections and hands-on displays to a Tourist Information Office and gift shop. The Almonry was originally home to the Almoner of Evesham Abbey, a Benedictine holy house founded in the 8th century. The abbey was one of the many dissolved by Henry VIII. The 1537 Evesham Bible is a revered relic, containing a handwritten, eyewitness account of troops bursting into their prayerful evensong. Previously, The Almonry has been a pub, tearooms and a private house. Now owned by Evesham Town Council, its displays detail lifestyles and events including various several wars, industrial heritage such as market gardening and glove making and a Victorian classroom and kitchen where children can dress up. The oldest part, The Undercroft, was mainly la store, but in the 17th century doubled as a prison for persecuted Quakers. Manager Ashleigh Jayes says: “It’s
the only building of this age in town that the public can access and people are always surprised by how much is here. They think it’s small but we have lots of rooms over two floors, plus the garden.” The Almonry, Abbey Gate, Evesham, Worcestershire. A vibrant new gallery has opened on the Pershore High Street, bringing the chance for visitors to see and buy an everchanging selection of colourful artwork in a fantastic art space. The Gallery showcases the prolific output of watercolour and pop art artist Jilly OxladeArnott, who is internationally known for her fine line ink and watercolour works of historical and significant buildings. Her use of vibrant colours, with an emphasis on the subject leaving the rest to fine line ink, produces a unique and stunning artwork, with collections including Birmingham, Cheltenham, Croome Court, International, National Trust, Shropshire, Worcestershire and has just started a Pershore collection. The Gallery will also display a
constant rotation of works by local, national and international guest artists in many different mediums, from oils to ceramics. They will be holding ‘meet the artist’ evenings and a number of art events as the year progresses. “We’ll have new work virtually every day and cater for every budget in a vibrant and inspiring environment,” she says, “From one off sculpture to limited edition prints.” Having recently moved to Pershore with artist mentor and art event organiser husband Chris, they have set up a home studio in Pershore, for art classes and private tuition to accompany Jilly’s many exhibitions, artist-insitu activities, and private commission work.

Well, slowly life is beginning to return to normal, albeit a new kind of “normal”. Christmas is not too far away, so Tweedies have linked up again with County Lifestyle and Leisure Magazine to bring you a September Competition. Original, quirky and colourful my hand crafted award winning characters have multiplied to become the magical world of the Tweedies. And the best bit of all? Tweedies are BRITISH! Maisie our flagship bear has chosen 2 Shetland bears and 1 Welsh Poshie – Noah, Isla and Eleri. Noah – is made from a dark brown Shetland herringbone tweed. His felt feet are one orange and one palest yellow, and he has orange ears. A large cream and orange heart is appliqued onto his tummy. His hand knitted hat is beige ribbing, pumpkin orange/yellow/beige stripes, and the crown is pumpkin orange. His warm scarf is also a bright pumpkin orange. Isla – is made from a soft green tweed from Shetland. Her felt feet are
one mid brown and one palest yellow and she has soft mint green cotton ears. On her tummy is a bright red and palest yellow flower. Her hand knitted hat is sandalwood brown ribbing, light willow green/buttermilk/ sandalwood stripes, and the crown is willow green. Her lacy hand knitted scarf is in a buttermilk yarn. Eleri – is a Welsh Poshie in a mid green Welsh tweed. She has pale grey felt feet with scarlet stitching, and green/white ears to match her cotton hat. Two hearts, one emerald green the other scarlet are appliqued to her tummy. A scarlet sparkly ribbon around her neck completes this lovely patriotic bear in green, white and red; the colours of the Welsh flag. Now all you have to do is answer the following four questions (answers are in the text):
1. 2. 3. 4.
What colour is the crown of Noah’s hat? What is the name of the patriotic bear?
Noah
Eleri
How many stripes are there on Isla’s hat? What colour is the stitching around the Welsh bears feet?
Good luck everyone! And be sure to visit our website for all the up to date bears, mice and our new additions this year in tinsel yarn – owls hedgehogs and snowmen. And believe me it is just like knitting tinsel off the Christmas tree!

WEDDINGS
& special occasions Micro weddings may have been in vogue during lockdown, celebrated with just a handful of a couple’s most treasured circle, but many couples postponed their big day multiple times so they could have the big bash of their dreams. With COVID restrictions lifted, business looks likely to boom as the romantically inclined put their hearts into creating the wedding day of their dreams. Many who went ahead and married with a limited guest list and a modest celebration, now

intend to dust off the plans for a full-scale celebration complete with a ginormous reception and exotic honeymoon abroad. Never has there been so much scope for a bespoke wedding crafted entirely to the couple’s own preferences and, of course, budget. The average pre-COVID wedding in the UK was reported to cost around £32,000 with all the travel and trimmings, although it’s fair to say that many managed admirably with a significantly lower tally.
Luxurious Mallory Court Hotel and Spa offers a stunning setting for a romantic wedding in Leamington Spa, whether for just small numbers or up to 150 guests. With four Red Stars from the AA, Mallory Court has superb accommodation, a restaurant with three AA Rosettes and a beautiful brasserie, along with amazing spa facilities, 10 acres of beautiful grounds and expert staff to help arrange ‘your day, your way.’ Go online to www.mallory.co.uk to check out this magnificent venue.

Weddings & Special Occasions – our top picks
Everything you need for the perfect day, all in one place When it comes to planning your wedding there is so much to consider, not least the suppliers you choose to provide the services that turn your day from good to ‘WOW’ yet it is so difficult to know who you can trust and to know you are getting good value for money. The wedding market is like no other with so many ‘businesses’ running without premises and in many instances without following appropriate legislation. We started Frily’s Boutique with one goal in mind – to be a trusted, nationwide one stop wedding shop providing exceptional quality with fantastic value for money, but most importantly providing confidence to brides to know that they truly have a wedding specialist supplying all aspects of their day so they can rest easy and focus on enjoying their day.

She has since trained with The Secret Retreat Beauty School, recently qualifying to teach certain skills, won a national start-up business award and become a Young Ambassador with the Prince’s Trust.
“One of the last things Mum said to me was to follow my dreams,” she says. “I always had passionate interest in beauty, so I followed my dream and started working from a tiny room in my house. I only had about 10 clients but I decided to go for it and open the salon in Evesham in December 2017. “We now have 1,030 clients registered with us. In conversation with Steph Hilton-Turvey Be yourself - says Steph Hilton-Turvey, Associate Director at HM Referencing. Steph was promoted to her current role in November 2020 and has shone at the local firm since joining them in March 2018. HM Referencing offer a first class tenant referencing service. The peace of mind to know that your tenants have been thoroughly screened. Steph continues: Your alarm goes off… I’m up early because I prefer not to rush in the morning. I drink coffee, pray, eat, and start to think about what the day might hold. These habits, along with walking to the office rather than driving, set me up for a good day. How did you start doing what you’re doing? Though I only started in a temporary interim role, it wasn’t long until I accepted a permanent position at Hazelton Mountford to manage the team of referencing account handlers and day-to-day business. The values and culture of Hazelton Mountford line up with my own, so it was an easy transition. Your typical day… The answer to this question would vary depending on the season. I catch up with our agents and keep up to date with the lettings industry and changes in the market. Processes are reviewed regularly, and we work with our software developer friends at bluebox to enhance the platform and
continue innovating. 1-to-1s with each account handler are an important part of the month, giving them space to talk about how they’re doing and voice any ideas about how we can do things differently. I’m very handson and will always step in to assist with day-to-day referencing where needed. You’re responsible for … We’re responsible for making sure that the UK’s letting agents are served with the highest standard of robust tenant reference checks. Over the last 9 years, we’ve combined the benefits of digital and traditional referencing – Fully online for a streamline and efficient service, with professionals looking after each agent as their dedicated account handler. What worries you? As a company of let property insurance and referencing experts, we are concerned at the number of new companies that don’t do the thorough work that we believe is needed to best reduce risk for agents and landlords. The vetting element of the tenant find process is important and corners can’t be cut. What’s on your to do list? I’ve done a lot of live presenting on YouTube during the pandemic, and I’d now like to get involved with podcasts. If anyone is reading this and would like a guest, get in touch! Biggest bugbear? Gossip and dishonouring chat.
What you wanted to be when you grew/grow up? As a child, I wanted to be an architect and still have an appreciation for design and architecture. I would draw out floorplans on squared paper, create the rooms on Paint, then select furniture from an Argos catalogue! Where can you mostly be found after work? Depending on the season, we might be out in the countryside, having dinner
with friends or crashing on the sofa in front of a good documentary. Best piece of advice you’ve received? Be yourself. What’s next? How do people find out about you? Find us at https:// hmreferencing.co.uk/ and connect with me on LinkedIn: https:// www.linkedin.com/in/ shiltonturvey.

Swinney Wood Log Cabins, where peace & tranquility awaits you Editor Tried and Tested
S
winney Wood Log Cabins are four outstanding boutique log cabins built for love, romance and luxury in the leafy woodland of Belper, Derbyshire, above the picturesque Derwent Valley. Here, couples can savour each other’s company surrounded by birdsong and natural beauty, yet also relish totally indulgent comforts such as a private hot tub, sauna and rainforest shower for two. The four rustic log cabins are crafted from red cedar and idyllically situated to capture their own special corner of the wood, as reflected in their names: Serein (n), fine rain that falls at sunset; Petrichor (n), the earthy smell that follows a rainfall; Apricity (n), the warmth the sun in winter and Komorebi (n) sunlight filtering through trees. No expense has been spared in creating these sumptuous hideaways, which are each exclusively for two adults. All are bespoke designed, with an open plan living area and kitchen warmed by a cylinder log burner. The bathrooms have double basins to go with double showers. Sliding glass doors open on to private verandas, where the hot tubs and saunas make perfect viewing stations to watch for shooting stars.
In each, a whimsical staircase leads to an open plan mezzanine floor with a king size four poster bed, free-standing bath and internal bridge leading to the first floor balcony. Comforts include not only handcrafted furniture, fresh blankets, cushions and bedding but also lovely touches like coffee machines, fluffy bathrobes and Molton Brown toiletries. While enjoying the enchanting views from each log cabin, guests may well spot foxes, badgers, deer and numerous species of birds. The area has been abundantly planted with native trees, hedging plants and a wildflower meadow to attract wildlife. Rebecca, the owner of Swinney Wood Log Cabins, says: “Truly idyllic and totally immersed in nature. Swinney Wood Log Cabins are a great place to fall in love, make a fairytale proposal, spend a dreamy honeymoon or just escape the world.” Our editor, Jody Collinson, spent time with her partner in Komorebi and was blown away by the beauty and luxury. “We knew it was going to be special but we never imagined quite how breathtaking,” she said. “I’ve reviewed properties for 20
years but nothing has come close. It was so tranquil and such a wonderful combination of ultra-modern and traditional. The smell, the warmth, the views, the underfloor heating, the attention to detail, it was all perfect. The owners even provided prosecco, chocolates and kindling for lighting the log burner. “You could lie on the bed or sit in the hot tub looking over the forest and the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. It was so relaxing, like staying in Heaven.” The log cabins overlook part of a World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, because of the industrial heritage generated by the River Derwent powering the cotton mills and birthing modern factory production. There are numerous places of interest to be explored, not to mention the vibrant market town of Belper with an array of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants not to mention a wealth of history. Nature-based fun holidays in Essex
or nature inspired holidays which are big on adventure, high on fun and low on commercialism, Malting Farm could be your dream come true. Situated in a quiet corner of North Essex, it offers luxury accommodation – brand new this summer - in three Scandinavianinspired but uniquely styled log cabins, all with their own king sized beds, hot tubs, outdoor decking and fire pits. Each snug cabin has been designed with care and imagination and equipped for all-round rustic comfort. When the whole site is booked for one group, there can also be use of four generously equipped, family-sized bell tents in a delightful glamping glade, catering for up to 30 people. Next year it is hoped to add one or more

extra special tree houses. Malting Farm only opened in July, after the COVID restrictions ended, but already there have been repeat bookings. That is due not only to the quality accommodation – and homemade cakes - but also to the on-site activities, such as paddleboarding, zip-wiring, pond dipping, angling and wild swimming. Running a 300 acre family farm, Will and Sammy King, have children aged five and seven themselves and designed the site to provide lots of active fun and outdoor interest. Taking advantage of features including a reservoir, stream, woodland and fields, they have created a nature trail, planted a wildflower meadow, fashioned a
little beach and added cycle hire to their portfolio. They have also teamed up with other local enterprises East Coast Distillery, which makes Tide’s Fortune gin, will be offering gin tasting and distillery tours. And, while Malting Farm’s own animals and crops are necessarily behind fences, children love visiting the Brook Meadow Smallholding, where friendly owner Emma lets them meet goats, sheep, ducks, chickens and quail. Sammy, who has a background in design and masterminded the cabins, says: “We initially planned this diversification over two years ago. It all started when we realised how difficult it was to find a family holiday that wasn’t either a retreat or a commercial kids’ holiday.
There was nothing on the market, so we decided to create our ‘perfect’ holiday location here on our farm.” Based in the village of Little Bentley, Malting Farm is also ideally placed for discovering the region’s wonderful walks, diverse coastline, award winning food, meandering rivers and historic towns. The nearest beach is at Frinton on
Sea, just 20 minute’ drive away, with golden sandy beaches and beach huts. England’s oldest recorded town, Colchester is 11 miles distant, along with its wonderful zoo, while the area’s rural landscapes were immortalised by artist John Constable, whose story is told at the National Trust property Flatford Mill, just over five miles away and scene of Constable’s famous work, The Haywain.
Sammy says: “It’s a wonderful area and we love sharing it with our guests. “It hasn’t been an easy journey, given the pandemic, home-schooling the children, unpredictable weather and other factors affecting timings, costs and supplies, but it has all been exciting and completely worth it.”
