Walks and quality care for your pets Animal lovers can be sure their pets are in safe hands when they entrust them to Cat’s Pet Sitting and Dog Walking Service. The owner looked after cheetahs in a South African wildlife sanctuary, served as an animal attendant in an Australian pet refuge and then managed five huge Turkish Anatolian shepherd dogs before setting up her business looking after local cats, dogs and other types of pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs and exotics.

Business owner Catherine Antrobus is quite at home tending any kind of animal, saying: “I have many years’ experience of looking after animals and am very passionate about them. My relationship is based on trust and respect. If you trust and respect them, they trust and respect you back.” She offers services tailored to each animal’s needs, looking after them in their own homes if preferred, and taking time to

visit and spend time getting to know her new clients before taking on their walks or care. This spares them the anxiety symptoms and stress when their owners go on holiday without them, or perhaps need to take time out for surgery or other health care needs.

She works out of Bromsgrove, but is able to cover a wide area, including Solihull, Kidderminster, Droitwich, Wychbold, Redditch and villages inbetween. Catherine is DBS checked and insured.

Our 16th year is almost over and thankfully Covid 19 vaccinations are enabling life to get back to a new normal. My bears and paperweight mice come with a rich pedigree; multi award winning including one for British Heritage Craft, original, quirky and very colourful. All fabric produced at Jamieson’s of Shetland and Trefriw Woollen Mill in North Wales is 100% British from pure native flocks. Scraps of fabric are gathered up after cutting out and later used to help stuff bear’s tummies, which over the years have been getting a little rounder making them so much more huggable! From time to time certain tweeds start coming to an end with no further availability at the Mills, so two coordinating fabrics are then teamed together and a Patchwork Bear is born. Poshies have also been introduced sporting very sassy cotton hats and ribbon bows. At Tweedies we have had fun with Tinsel wool

too creating owls, snowmen and hedgehogs, and YES it’s just like knitting tinsel from the Christmas tree! Tweedies always make people smile, happy bears with cheeky expressions. Be careful though, their personalities are as big and bold as their ears and there’s often trouble in my workshop cupboards especially when they get excited, or bored as they have been since Covid began. Bespoke bears can now be made from scratch up until Mid November at the very latest, although it is still best to order as early as you can; and hats and scarves can be

changed on any stock bears up until the 2nd week of December. Full details of bears, mice and availability are on our website, but if your favourite is out of stock email or text on WhatsApp or Messenger, and ask, as there is always a possibility it could be made up for you, time and commitments allowing. So…..if you still don’t want to risk the crowds, shop on our website from the comfort of your armchair for a truly original gift designed and handcrafted with a whole lot of love. There are lots of bears and mice eagerly awaiting their forever homes.

STYLE YOUR HOME There are great things to be enjoyed about restyling your home, whether in part or in total. One is the beauty that comes from complete rooms being totally co-ordinated in style and colour. Another is in making the most of the available space so everything can be neat, organised and easily accessed. A fully fitted kitchen designed bespoke for your particular space

6

can be a masterpiece of practicality. With an immense choice of worktops and finishes to complement smart new appliances, it can offer an abundance of cupboard and drawer storage to hide all those pots, pans and awkwardly shaped gadgets such as air fryers and food processors. It can also bring social space spend quality time with family or friends.

A new bathroom can be utterly transforming, especially with modern wetrooms and power showers, while fitted bedrooms can bring luxury to where you need it most. Sometimes a modest space can be transformed to a highly useful home office or a playroom. The trick to these lifechanging improvements is to find a reliable specialist, first to draw up

designs in line with your personal preferences and budget, then to carry out the fitting. Most sole traders carry out the main carpentry and joinery work themselves, bringing wide experience to the role. Many have trusted trade friends to complete the electrics, plumbing, plastering, tiling or decorating, so they take care of everything and the customer doesn’t have to worry about a thing.

Health & Care Moving into a care home is a big step for anyone to take when they have been used to running their own household and looking after themselves. It often follows on from a traumatic event, such as being bereaved or suffering an injury which may heal well enough but rob a person of their confidence for managing alone. It may also follow the onset of dementia, making it increasingly risky for them to continue staying in their own home. Happily, there are some remarkable residential homes offering exemplary care and accommodation to suit people’s differing needs. They include those run by our advertisers, who provide friendly, comfortable environments where every resident is treated as an individual. Residents find it extremely

reassuring to know that there are caring professionals around 24/7 to assist with personal care, dementia care, even palliative care, liaising as appropriate with local nurses, doctors and other medical services. They often find a new lease of life as they find themselves in the good company of staff, visitors and other residents, enjoying a lively programme of activities personalised to their own preferences. It can be a huge relief to people in declining health to be able to hand over the reins of responsibility for things like cleaning, food preparation, laundry, shopping and dealing an assortment of daily dramas. Check out the websites to see how our advertisers can change life for the better for you or your older relatives.

WEDDINGS

& special occasions Micro weddings may have been in vogue during lockdown, celebrated with just a handful of a couple’s most treasured circle, but many couples postponed their big day multiple times so they could have the big bash of their dreams. With COVID restrictions lifted, business looks likely to boom as the romantically inclined put their hearts into creating the wedding day of their dreams. Many who went ahead and married with a limited guest list and a modest celebration, now

30

countylifestyleandleisure.com

intend to dust off the plans for a full-scale celebration complete with a ginormous reception and exotic honeymoon abroad. Never has there been so much scope for a bespoke wedding crafted entirely to the couple’s own preferences and, of course, budget. The average pre-COVID wedding in the UK was reported to cost around £32,000 with all the travel and trimmings, although it’s fair to say that many managed admirably with a significantly lower tally.

Luxurious Mallory Court Hotel and Spa offers a stunning setting for a romantic wedding in Leamington Spa, whether for just small numbers or up to 150 guests. With four Red Stars from the AA, Mallory Court has superb accommodation, a restaurant with three AA Rosettes and a beautiful brasserie, along with amazing spa facilities, 10 acres of beautiful grounds and expert staff to help arrange ‘your day, your way.’ Go online to www.mallory.co.uk to check out this magnificent venue.

said to me was to follow my dreams,” she says. “I always had passionate interest in beauty, so I followed my dream and started working from a tiny room in my house. I only had about 10 clients but I decided to go for it and open the salon in Evesham in December 2017. “We now have 1,030 clients registered with us. Fabric paradise for crafters old and new Dressmakers, quilters, knitters and crafters are finding everything they need to perfect their sewing projects at Nellie’s Fabric Shop. Catering for everyone from absolute beginners to experts, this independent retailer provides a growing range of dressmaking fabrics, including jersey, denim, corduroys, linens, cotton lawn and more, as well as the latest quilting fabrics, pre-cut packs and kits from Moda, Riley Blake and

Liberty in fabulous colourful and coordinating prints. Other fabrics range from muslin to hard wearing upholstery cottons, while accessories include zips, buttons, ribbons, trim, threads and sewing patterns. In response to a demand for yarn and knitting patterns Nellies now stocks a great selection from King Cole. There are kits to help people get started and shop owner Emma

White, an accomplished dressmaker, is always pleased to help, advise and source any material or equipment not already in stock. She also offers sewing machine servicing and is preparing to run workshops. Nellie’s Fabric Shop opened in April.“I noticed a big increase in people taking up sewing and crafts again during the lockdown,” says Emma, “And I became increasingly

busy selling fabric via my website, www.nellies.store. I outgrew my workshop space and decided to open a shop. It’s lovely to talk to customers about their projects. “Sewing is a very tactile and sociable hobby. Customers like to see and touch before they buy, and exchange sewing tips. Sadly, Britain has lost many traditional fabric shops over recent years. It’s great to bring one back.”

STAYCATIONS

for all seasons COVID restrictions have encouraged many more people to take their holidays in Britain this year, but that has opened their eyes to the numerous brilliant places to be enjoyed. This month we’re pleased to bring you a selection of fabulous places for staycations, in County Durham, the Scottish Borders, Lancashire, Devon and Cornwall. From November 18 to 21,

36

Durham will be hosting Lumiere, a free show of artworks in light around the city and, for the first time, into the county landscape. Lancashire is famous for the Blackpool Illuminations – also free to see - and these have already been lit for an epic run until January 3. Winter festivities in the Scottish Borders include a unique new festival featuring diverse events and Christmas markets,

Idyllic holidays with private pools, hot tubs and saunas in the Herefordshire countryside. Luxurious holiday lets provided by Lakes Edge come with their own hot tubs, saunas and private gardens, while three even have their own exclusive swimming pools. They are set on the delightful Pudleston Court estate near Leominster and are all unique, characterful and dog friendly, while the grounds offer tranquil walks through lush countryside with lakes and woodland. Pudleston is a small and peaceful village, while impressive Pudleston Court was the country pile of Victorian coal baron Elias Chadwick, built in 1846. It’s a beautiful locality well placed for exploring not only historic Hereford, the foodie town of Ludlow but also the Cotswolds and Welsh Marches.

Nearby attractions such as Oaker Wood adventure centre and the National Trust’s Berrington Hall with its grounds designed by Capability Brown. Lakes Edge has six holiday properties – soon to be seven – dotted around the estate, all furnished, fitted and equipped to the highest contemporary standards. Operations Manager Liz Saunders says: “They are all luxurious properties in the ‘country modern’ style. Guests have full access to the estate, which is about 50 acres and protected by electric gates at each end.” Near the impressive front entrance are two Grade Two listed gatehouse lodges, Adam Lodge and Eve Lodge. Both with lake views, they have one double

bedroom, but can sleep another two people in a downstairs foldaway bed if wished. The Butlers is a four bedroomed holiday cottage with a hot tub and sauna in the private rear garden. The other three properties have exclusive use of their own private indoor pools, each 8m x 4m x 1.4m deep pool with their own changing rooms and w/cs. One of these is The Gaggles, an older, four bedroomed cottage while the others, The Barn and Poachers Barn, are newly built, completed last year. The Barn is the largest of all, with six bedrooms, six bathrooms and a large garden with a gas barbecue and outdoor seating for 12. All properties have a barbecue.

BILLESLEY MANOR Hotel and Spa Tried & Tested Review A stay at Billesley Manor Hotel and Spa is not only a luxurious treat but where it is situated in the heart of Warwickshire there are endless possibilities of places to visit, entertainment and gastronomic delights. En route, we called into Leamington, enjoying coffee and cake in an Italian coffee shop, a wander among the wealth of shops, a stroll in a lovely park, then lunch at Carluccios. Tired and satiated, we travelled the short distance to Billesley Manor. Approaching the drive, our first impressions were of a wonderful imposing building in acres of grounds. It was Halloween, so we were welcomed with a display of gourds and pumpkins together with a large bronze shaggy dog. Much effort had been made to keep guests safe during Covid restrictions whilst maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. Reception staff were friendly and we were shown to our clean, comfortable room. Two floral velvet armchairs overlooked the garden, which was full of large and unusual topiary. One hedge looked like a gorilla! It was quite magical. We could imagine the grounds and seating area being delightful in spring and summer.

We went for a pleasurable, relaxing swim in the Spa pool, then rounded off our day with a most delightful evening meal from an extensive menu with fine wine served by friendly professional staff. We could not help but notice that although the whole building is in post medieval style with a Shakespearean theme, there were some quirky modern touches. Elizabethan pictures in the dining room looked as though they had been brush stroked with bright paint. An ‘As You Like It’ room had books hanging from the ceiling! A wonderful day was followed by a good night’s sleep and then a choice of breakfast with tasty locally sourced ingredients. Making the most of our time in this wonderful area, we travelled a few minutes into Stratford upon Avon, where we walked along the river, had a drink outside the Dirty Duck and took lunch in one of the many good restaurants. We

also made a note of many interesting things to do in Stratford for our next visit. We will definitely stay at Billesley Manor again and take advantage of this wonderful hotel and all the surrounding area has to offer.

Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa is a unique 5 Star luxury hotel in an Elizabethan manor house standing in 11 acres of superb grounds in Alcester, on the doorstep of Stratford upon Avon. With COVID secure accreditation and more than 70 guest bedrooms, including deluxe suites, it is here that Shakespeare penned his comedy ‘As You Like It’ in 1599.

A £5.6 million refurbishment has recently been completed and the premises include not only guest accommodation and a divine spa but extensive facilities for weddings, conferences and other private events. The grounds have features including a spectacular Victorian topiary garden and an 11th century church where Shakespeare is thought to have married Anne Hathaway. Discover

Durham What a great place County Durham is to visit in the winter! Durham city always presents a pleasant face to the world with the ancient attractions of cathedral and castle standing side by side overlooking the River Wear as a grand and picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city scene itself is replete with fabulous shops, bars and eateries, buzzing nightlife and numerous nooks and crannies to be explored.

F

rom November 18 to 21, the city will again host its annual Lumiere festival of artworks created in light, the most ambitious yet but still free to see. The dramatic and incredibly clever light installations have been created by the most talented artists in the genre, and this year reach into the county landscape, for example at Durham Miners’ Hall, Redhills, and Fulling Mill, warning of catastrophic flood levels if global warming should continue. The cathedral, with magnificent exhibitions, is a key point on the Northern Saints Trails across the north east region, based on ancient pilgrim routes. The trails trace the impact of St Cuthbert, who presided over religious life on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and whose body was later transferred to Durham, and the Veneral Bede, an Anglo-Saxon scholar. They take visitors through many diverse and beautiful landscapes. Another world class venue

42

to visit is the Beamish Living Museum of the North. It already enjoys a formidable reputation with its entertaining blend of living history and activities giving the flavour of yesteryear, from eating and drinking to riding old fashioned trams. While some existing exhibits date back as far as the 1820s, the new will include many within living memory of today’s mature adults, including, next year, a replica 1950s farm and a town scene where visitors will be able to have a hair-do, feast on fish & chips, listen to a jukebox and shop ‘50s style. This part of the country is known, too, for the rolling countryside, moors, hills, rivers and starry skies of the Durham Dales, part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). One of the highlights is the dramatic High Force Waterfall, but also not to be missed is the nearby town of Barnard Castle, its namesake castle ruins and the showpiece Bowes Museum.

Adam and Louise welcome you to our family run camping and caravan park, in the beautiful countryside of County Durham We welcome touring caravans, motorhomes and tents, and also have caravan holiday homes available for hire. With an on site Tea Room, serving delicious teas and coffee, tasty homemade cakes, sweet treats and breakfasts.

Lancashire Blackpool Illuminations have long been known as the greatest free light show on Earth in what could be argued to be the fun capital not just of Lancashire but the whole UK. This year the six miles of festoons, tableaux and entertainment along the famous seafront promenade are better and more extravagant than ever.

H

aving started on September 3, they’re also going on for two months longer than usual, right up to January 3, to give the town a welcome tourism boost after the long and dreary COVID lockdown and bring as much brightness as possible into the lives of locals and visitors alike.

venue is treasured by ballroom dancers everywhere – including those competing in Strictly – but it also features mind-blowing attractions such as the Sky High Cocktail Bar and The Eye glass viewing platform, 4D cinema experience, creepy dungeon ride, Sea Life and Madame Tussaud’s waxworks, among others.

The spectacle, which has been drawing the public for more than 140 years, features many bright and beautiful displays, made up of more than a million lights and many other components. Wow factor attractions this year include the laser-mapped show Astral Dreams, transforming Blackpool Tower with light, sound and colour; Spiro Light Tunnel, an immersive walk-through tunnel of light spanning 26 metres of the Tower Festival Headland; and the new Illuminated Sandcastle and Beach Balls, another beguiling walkthrough experience and definitely a photo opportunity.

Thrill seekers flock to the revolutionary rides of the Pleasure Beach fairground, while the wider terrain of Lancashire offers a wonderful expanse of coastline, including the mudflats and salt marshes of Morecambe Bay where the shrimps are a local delicacy. There are many features to be enjoyed along the seafront, including a homage to comedian Eric Morecambe, and a touching memorial to 23 Chinese cockle pickers who died when the tide overcame them in 2004.

No-one should visit Blackpool going its famous Tower, 158 metres tall and opened in 1894, modelled on the Eiffel Tower. The

44

Nature lovers will enjoy the Forest of Bowland and also the dramatic peak of Pendle Hill, home of the Pendle Witches who were executed for witchcraft in 1612. Lancaster Castle, an operational prison until 2011, tells their sad story.

Enjoy Scotland from Lochside loveliness

Coldingham Loch is famous as one of the best and oldest trout fisheries in Scotland, but during the off-season there is still plenty to do and enjoy, both locally and within an easy drive or train journey. The comfortable, well equipped holiday accommodation of Coldingham Loch Cottages is a tranquil base for visiting Edinburgh or perhaps touring the Scottish Borders, visiting popular attractions such as Kailzie Gardens, Floors Castle, Kielder Forest and Observatory or Jim Clark Motorsport Museum. The loch itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, being a rare freshwater lake close to the sea and supporting a rich variety of wildlife. In winter, the site attracts wildfowl including long-tailed duck, whooper swan, widgeon, pink-footed and greylag geese but there is interest all year round and there are good walks everywhere, including the one around the loch itself. The accommodation consists of three stone cottages and three wooden cabins sleeping from three to six people, all dotted around a 60 acre private estate.

Book Bellevue for a brilliant Borders away-stay People who like plenty to see and do on their holidays will find the Scottish Borders town of Kelso greatly to their liking and Bellevue Guest House the ideal venue from which to enjoy it. The venue was recently named Best Bed & Breakfast in the Scottish Borders in the 2021 Scottish Enterprise Award. It is only five minutes’ walk from the welcoming town centre with its unique shops, bars and eateries centred on one of Europe’s largest cobbled squares, yet is in a peaceful location great for getting good night’s sleep after a busy day.

All but one take dogs, at no extra charge. One cottage is a unique Victorian boathouse and comes with its own boat which guests can use for fly fishing. The properties are all cosy, private and fully equipped, sleeping three to six people each but popular with couples. Each has its own outdoor space and parking. THE MILL @ LEWINSHOPE

Luxury self catering accommodation near Selkirk, the Scottish Borders The Mill at Lewinshope offers holidaymakers and their dogs the chance to enjoy fabulously luxurious self-catering in the Yarrow Valley, set in 100 beautiful acres of the Scottish Borders. Alongside that, adventurers can live wild and totally off-grid for a while in an idyllic glamping experience in the peace of fields and woodlands. There are stunning walks and cycle rides all around, with a great variety of wildlife to be spotted and some of the starriest skies in the land. Despite the remote setting, the site is only an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and within reach of several appealing towns with a rich range of heritage, history and visitor attractions to be enjoyed, including Melrose, Kelso, Selkirk and Peebles. However, Lulu Watson, who runs the site with her husband, Johnny, says: “This is our little piece of paradise. The views are amazing and it’s so lovely just being here,

some people just don’t go anywhere else.” The Mill itself was built in the 19th century to thresh grain, but has been sensitively converted to provide award-winning accommodation with every modern home comfort, including a kitchen equipped to thrill the most ardent cooks. The property is designed to sleep eight people in spacious bedrooms with their own bathrooms, one with a sauna, another with a steam shower and a third with a roll-top bath. Two extra people can be accommodated using a sofabed in the highly popular mezzanine feature and a spare bed in the Beech room. Each bedroom has beams, seats, shelves and finishes hand crafted in one of four locally grown hardwoods, oak, ash, elm or beech. The superking-sized beds have pocket-sprung mattresses and can be converted into single beds if preferred. Guests

snuggle under feather and duck down duvets and fine Egyptian cotton linen, but anti-allergenic versions are available on request. The mezzanine floor is a fabulous kids’ zone or chillout area with comfy seating, beanbags, TV, Blu-Ray DVD, books, games and that sofabed, a great little get-away for anyone who wants their own space. Glampers have the choice of a shepherd’s hut, a yurt and a campsite for up to six spaces to put up their own tents on a delightful site on the edge of woodland down by the River Yarrow. The site is self-contained and private, altogether accommodating up to 10 people. The shepherd’s hut sleeps one adult and small child

or makes an ideal artistic retreat, perhaps for a writer or painter. The yurt sleeps two adults and glampers have the use of a converted horse box kitchen, covered seating, gas stove and washing facilities including a luxurious modern bathroom block with flush toilet and hot shower. Many users like to hang out in a hammock or toast marshmallows on an open fire. If you truly want to get away from it all, this is where to do it! In conversation with Steph Hilton-Turvey Be yourself - says Steph Hilton-Turvey, Associate Director at HM Referencing. Steph was promoted to her current role in November 2020 and has shone at the local firm since joining them in March 2018. HM Referencing offer a first class tenant referencing service. The peace of mind to know that your tenants have been thoroughly screened. Steph continues: Your alarm goes off… I’m up early because I prefer not to rush in the morning. I drink coffee, pray, eat, and start to think about what the day might hold. These habits, along with walking to the office rather than driving, set me up for a good day. How did you start doing what you’re doing? Though I only started in a temporary interim role, it wasn’t long until I accepted a permanent position at Hazelton Mountford to manage the team of referencing account handlers and day-to-day business. The values and culture of Hazelton Mountford line up with my own, so it was an easy transition. Your typical day… The answer to this question would vary depending on the season. I catch up with our agents and keep up to date with the lettings industry and changes in the market. Processes are reviewed regularly, and we work with our software developer friends at bluebox to enhance the platform and

continue innovating. 1-to-1s with each account handler are an important part of the month, giving them space to talk about how they’re doing and voice any ideas about how we can do things differently. I’m very handson and will always step in to assist with day-to-day referencing where needed. You’re responsible for … We’re responsible for making sure that the UK’s letting agents are served with the highest standard of robust tenant reference checks. Over the last 9 years, we’ve combined the benefits of digital and traditional referencing – Fully online for a streamline and efficient service, with professionals looking after each agent as their dedicated account handler. What worries you? As a company of let property insurance and referencing experts, we are concerned at the number of new companies that don’t do the thorough work that we believe is needed to best reduce risk for agents and landlords. The vetting element of the tenant find process is important and corners can’t be cut. What’s on your to do list? I’ve done a lot of live presenting on YouTube during the pandemic, and I’d now like to get involved with podcasts. If anyone is reading this and would like a guest, get in touch! Biggest bugbear? Gossip and dishonouring chat.

What you wanted to be when you grew/grow up? As a child, I wanted to be an architect and still have an appreciation for design and architecture. I would draw out floorplans on squared paper, create the rooms on Paint, then select furniture from an Argos catalogue! Where can you mostly be found after work? Depending on the season, we might be out in the countryside, having dinner

with friends or crashing on the sofa in front of a good documentary. Best piece of advice you’ve received? Be yourself. What’s next? How do people find out about you? Find us at https:// hmreferencing.co.uk/ and connect with me on LinkedIn: https:// www.linkedin.com/in/ shiltonturvey.
