Ayrshire

Ayrshire gave Scotland one of its most famous sons, the bard Robert Burns. The prolific poet and lyricist inspired his countryfolk to the extent that he and his work have since 1801 been celebrated on his birthday, January 25, in extraordinary ways, from ‘addressing the haggis’ to boisterously singing Auld Lang Syne with crossed arms and joined hands. The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in the village of Alloway is a 5 Star attraction. It gained the Best Heritage Tourism Experience in the Scottish Thistle Awards in 2019/’20. A visit begins with a journey through village landmarks of Burns’s life to the modest cottage where he was raised, with more than 5,000 artefacts and frequent screenings of his works being performed. The grounds include a Burns- themed play area, Scots Wa-Hey, with Tam o’ Shanter zip wire, Witches’ Cauldron roundabout and Auld Kirk climbing wall. Ayr itself is a popular seaside resort an hour’s drive from Glasgow with a long, sandy beach and esplanade. Ayr race course dates back to the 16th century hosts a busy schedule of events, including the Scottish Grand National and the town has a great variety of shops and places to eat. West Kilbride is Scotland’s first accredited Craft Town and a great place to buy quality contemporary art and craft from a diverse range of skills showcased in local shops. At the heart of it is The Barony Centre – a converted church – offering a range of workshops and events.

The Burnside Guest House is ideally located in a quiet conservation area near the beach but within easy walking distance of Ayr town centre which boasts a selection of great restaurants and shops. This Victorian terraced Guest House has been tastefully redecorated to retain period features such as high ceilings with ornate cornicing and furbished with beautiful traditional furniture to provide award-winning 4 Star quality accommodation while still retaining the intimacy of a home. The Burnside offers single, twin/double and family rooms, most having ensuite facilities and free wi-fi. For family gatherings, weddings or golf parties the entire guest house can be reserved.
