Boutique camping/glamping in scenic North Wales

Cae Lal is an amazing holiday location for anyone wanting to explore Snowdonia, the North Wales coast and – being just five minutes’ drive from the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait – the island of Anglesey. The family-run site is an eco-friendly camping and glamping retreat snugly nestled into a tranquil, natural landscape with a mountain backdrop, where a rich assortment of wildlife thrives alongside its very contented guests.

The site sits close to the university city of Bangor. Whilst having the rural setting, Cae Lal is remarkably well-placed for those who like some retail therapy and a ready source of supermarket food supplies within reach alongside their scenic surroundings. Attractions within half an hour’s drive include the world-famous Zip World, Welsh Highland Railway, historical castles of Conwy, Caernarfon and Beaumaris and a number of beautiful lakes, waterfalls and beaches. Greenwood Family Park provides award-winning fun close to base and the famous Portmeirion Italian-style village is only 45 minutes away.

Cae Lal offers rustic cabins and yurts, plus a spacious bell tent kitted out with boho furnishings and fairy lights. It also has a familyfriendly campsite with well-spaced pitches in the meadow for those who enjoy privacy and seclusion. Some camping pitches are available, also, on the lawn, closer to the communal area and great for small groups holidaying together.

The site is served by a boutique washroom with designer-style hot showers, stylish compost toilets and a washing up area. Guests can socialise in a communal shed – Y Sied - where free beverages are available in the shared kitchenette. Many bring their own beer, wine and other choices to keep cool in the fridge.

Toys, games and picnic tables help everyone relax and enjoy the special atmosphere of this magical unspoilt site, which has a mix of habitats including a marshy area which attracts frogs, waders and dragonflies and a woodland with a stream running through, great for den-building and home to owls, foxes, hares and even stoats.

Owners and first language Welsh speakers Bethan and Jacob bought the smallholding in 2019, embracing a green lifestyle and enhancement of a nature-friendly environment. This year they plan to launch wellness options such as yoga, reiki and massage treatments.

The site lends itself perfectly to group wellbeing retreats and inquiries are positively welcomed from holistic practitioners interested in arranging group breaks of that nature. But, it is perfect, too, for people who simply want to explore this wonderful area of Wales.

Bethan says: “It’s absolutely brilliant because it seems in the middle of nowhere yet we are actually in the middle of everywhere. We adore it ourselves and love sharing it with our guests.”

A picturesque corner of the countryside is the setting for Be Glamping Suffolk, where up to six people can get close to nature while still enjoying home luxuries from hot showers to TV in a Canadian-inspired, hand-built log cabin. Foxes, deer and any number of bird species regularly turn up to share the site’s five acres of tranquil space near the village of Long Melford, which is famous for connections to revered landscape painters John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough and more recently as the home territory of BBC antiques dealer Lovejoy.

The cabin itself, the Kentwell –named after the National Trust’s nearby stately home, Kentwell Hall – offers views over a spring-fed fishing lake where many guests enjoy indulging in the freshest of wild swimming scenarios. Centrally heated and well-insulated for cosiness at all times of year, it has a downstairs double bedroom and a sofabed which also sleeps two, plus a second double bed on a mezzanine floor. The living area includes a shower room and toilet and a kitchen as well as an outdoor veranda.

A second cabin is hoped to be

added this summer and there is also a 10-seater barbecue cabin available to facilitate sociable evenings even when it is cold or wet outside.

Long Melford’s hospitable selection of pubs, restaurants and tearooms is only a short walk away, as are its cheerful range of independent shops, galleries and antiques centres.

The whole area is replete with great walks around the Dedham Vale – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and the Stour Valley. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join their owners at The Kentwell.

Be Glamping’s friendly owners are Mark Wilson and Stacy Griffith. Mark, who designed and built The Kentwell, says: “It’s a really lovely area and great for visiting places like the cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds and Lavenham, which is the best preserved medieval town in England.”

Pristine Suffolk countryside is the setting for family and pet friendly Newlands Staycations, offering smart log cabins and a romantic shepherd’s hut with their own private hot tubs as well as a family bell tent for summer stays and pitches for touring caravans. The spot is only 20 miles from the fashionable seaside town of Aldeburgh, which is famous for its music and literary festivals, the building of Sir Francis Drake’s warships and great fish & chips. Situated on the edge of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Woodbridge has a vibrant range of shops, pubs and restaurants. Its rare and restored Tide Mill – once owned by Queen Elizabeth I – still produces stoneground wholemeal flour and gives a vivid insight into the lifestyle of a medieval miller.

The Newlands site has two log cabins, one based on Canadian designs and the other Scandinavian. Stag’s Rest sleeps six and Robin’s Rest sleeps four in well-equipped style and comfort. They each have their own bathroom, kitchen, open plan living area and bedrooms, as well as secure gardens as well as those muscle-relaxing hot tubs.

Escape to SNOWDONIA

Snowdonia has long been a favourite with English holidaymakers, although they’re now being encouraged to get used to it by its Welsh language name of Eryri. It’s the land of Mount Snowdon itself, along with 14 more peaks and some 200

miles of splendid coast, pristine beaches, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and woodland idylls.

Snowdonia National Park boasts outstanding attractions such as the world’s fastest zipwire at Zip World and an inland

surfing lagoon where waves rise whatever the weather, at Adventure Parc Snowdonia. Both its castles and its former slate quarries come within UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offering numerous points of interest.

Porth Eryri Glamping sits on the grounds of a 40-acre working farm called Gwern Hywel Isaf on the outskirts of the beautiful village of Pentrefoelas on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park.

We are situated around 10 minutes drive away from the popular tourist destination of Betws-y-coed, known as the “Gateway to Snowdonia”. Porth Eryri translates directly to Gateway to Snowdonia, and we named ourselves as such due to our positioning with magnificent views of the famous mountain ranges nearby.

Our luxury cabins are hand-built right here in Wales, using the finest sustainable materials and products. All pods are split-level with an upper hayloft bedroom space, and have an outdoor decked area with hot tub.

Our cabins all offer plenty of privacy in a beautiful woodland location, and can accommodate between 2 and 6 people.

Escape to THE CHILTERNS

Woodlands, wetlands, heaths, river valleys, sparkling streams and chalky hills all give character to The Chilterns, a designated Area of Outstanding natural Beauty spanning the space between London and Oxford. With numerous nature reserves and other protected habitats, the Chilterns harbour rare plants such as the Chiltern gentian and monkey orchid and many creatures under stress, such as the blue Adonis butterfly, water vole and otter.

The landscape is peppered with the signs of ancient peoples, among them Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age forts, but some 80,000 people live within the area today. They populate attractive market towns such as Amersham and Beaconsfield, with chic shops and welcoming places to enjoy a tipple or a tasty meal, often utilising locally grown produce.

Chiltern Open Air Museum features nearly 40 historic buildings rescued and rebuilt within its grounds. It has a 19th century farm with animals and machinery and stages frequent special events.

Rest, revive, and relax in one of our Luxury Glamping Safari Lodges, nestled in the Chiltern Hills by the stunning riverside town of Marlow on Thames in Buckinghamshire.

Set on a family run 30-acre smallholding with horses, chickens, dogs and a cat, overlooking fields and woodland, yet only 35 miles from London. Walk, cycle or ride through the Chilterns, explore the river by boat or canoe then snuggle into our warm cosy beds after toasting marshmallows on the fire and gazing at the stars. At Shillingridge you can immerse yourself in a simpler way of life, enjoy deep peace and tranquillity, big starry night skies and reconnect to the abundant wildlife, nature, and trees that surround us.

Oxfordshire Farm Stays

We are excited to share with you a piece of our magical farm in a hidden away part of Oxfordshire.

The Old Barn stands so grand with great views in every direction, this was used to store hay and house animals. The Old Stable was home to shire horses in the days when they worked the land. Nestled between the barn and office it’s a great place to watch the cows in the winter. The Old Office was simply the farm office, you will never get bored of the views of rolling countryside from the kitchen.

Discovering DARTMOOR

Dartmoor in Devon is home to some 34,000 people and 1,500 ponies, with the latter roaming free and grazing where they will around the wildly inviting landscape. The ponies have been around for some 3,500 years, according to archaeological hoof prints, and are greatly loved

by modern visitors to Devon’s 368 square mile outdoor playground of wooded valleys, rushing rivers, granite tors and moorland.

Visitor Centres at Princetown, Postbridge and Haytor Rocks help people of all ages gain the most enjoyment from the park’s many

attractions. These range from National Trust properties such as Drogo Castle – England’s most modern – to pleasant market towns such as Bovey Tracey, famous for the House of Marbles, makers of outstanding glass and traditional toys such as marbles and tiddlywinks.

The Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton presents 5,000 years of gripping history through its amazing network of hands-on Discovery Zones, trails, events

Few places capture the imagination as completely as Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. People of all ages find excitement hunting for dinosaur remains along the beaches of places such as Lyme Regis, where fossil hunter Mary Anning found the first complete ichthyosaurus, aged 12, with her father. Later, in 1823, she found the first plesiosaurus to be scientifically described.

This scenic county is spangled with great places to visit, whether popular seaside resorts such as Bournmouth, Wareham, Swanage and Poole or those inland such as Bridport and Dorchester, the latter immortalised as the home of Victorian novelist Thomas Hardy.

National Trust properties in these parts include Hardy’s birthplace, Lawrence of Arabia’s retreat of Clouds Hill near the Bovington tank museum and Corfe Castle, established by William the Conqueror and reduced to ruins in the English Civil War. Studland Bay is an extraordinary expanse of beach known for water sports, wildlife and the popular naturist hang-out, Knoll Beach.

that hosts a twice weekly street market, known for its art scene and quirky, annual hat festival. With plenty of pubs and restaurants, shops and beauty salons there really is something for everyone. West Bay is just 5.5 miles away and the location of Broadchurch

an idillic little harbour. Of course we should mention the World Heritage Jurassic coast. Simply stunning scenery stretching 95 miles of Devon and Dorset Coastline, it simply is a must see to believe it’s beauty.
