Tours and tastings all year round at award winning local vineyard

COVER FEATURE

English wine may be a relatively new phenomenon, but the home-grown varieties are rapidly gaining ground popularity for taste and quality. Cotswoldsbased Little Oak Vineyard had its first vines planted less than 20 years ago but has already enjoyed competition success, with its sparkling wine selected among Wine Pleasures’ top 50 in the world and three products gaining bronzes in this year’s Independent English Wine Awards.

Little Oak white wines, sparkling wine and brandy are, of course, available to buy online and direct, but many people like to make a day of it with a fullblown vineyard visit.

Held either as walking tours or indoor events, depending on weather, these events are highly enjoyable and educational occasions for mainly couples and groups, telling how the Siegerrebe and Seyval Blanc grapes are grown and tended before being turned into the Little Oak’s distinctive and refreshing varieties.

Presented by vinery owners Steve and Gemma Wilson, the tours or talks cover the short but fascinating history of the vineyard, the vagaries of the vintner’s trade and the steep, hard but ultimately satisfying road to success. Tastings are naturally included and lunch can be added in too, featuring other premium products from within the local area.

Customers can also lease a vine for a year. This enables them to participate in its care and harvesting, attend related invitation-only events and finally own two bottles of the resulting wine.

The vineyard’s products are all available to buy via email, including different vintages of the Siegerrebe white and that winning sparkling made with the Seyval Blanc blended with Siegerrebe for an extra special taste. Gift cards are also available so you can treat you friends or family to their own choice of wines, a vineyard tour or vine leasing package for that extra special occasion.

East Yorkshire Escapes Our top Places to Stay

When in Yorkshire, do not miss out on York! This amazing city has charms for everyone, from shoppers who love both the look and the contents of the medieval streets, famously including The Shambles, to those who like a flutter on the horses

or perhaps seek spiritual inspiration within the Gothic glories of York Minster. There are numerous great places to eat and drink, while York’s Chocolate Story tells a tasty tale which began with Messrs Rowntree and Terry.

Smaller, quieter but arguably just as pretty, the market town of Beverley is another historic gem, with its own 13th century minster, cobbled streets, courtyards and medieval buildings housing charming shops.

Yorkshire’s East Riding is an area of great character, from Hull and the River Humber in the south to Flamborough Head, just above the seaside town of Bridlington, in the north. Its wild attractions include the RSPB ‘seabird city’ of Bempton Cliffs and the lighthouse landmark of Flamborough Head.

While Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are perhaps better known seaside resorts, the more southerly Hornsea quietly holds its own head high with a Blue Flag beach, quaint promenade and the UK’s first outlet shopping park, Hornsea Freeport. Embarking on an unforgettable journey is an absolute guarantee for anyone reserving a stay at the exceptional hideaways of Waterfall Caves, situated along the North Coast in Northern Ireland. Three cosy self-catering accommodations with scenic views of spring-fed fishing lakes are nestled within a forested landscape deemed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They are situated at the foot of Binevenagh Mountain.

The farmland spot is just three miles from the famous Causeway Coastal touring route with its rugged coastline and picture-perfect beaches. It is around half-an-hour’s drive from the

landmarks and attractions of Derry, or the famous geological wonder, the Giant’s Causeway. An on-site viewing point offers breathtaking panoramas of the North Atlantic, Donegal and Lough Foyle.

While two of the caves can accommodate four guests rather than two, the family-owned site is a magnet for couples who want to experience a romantic holiday in magical surroundings. The lake is a paradise for anglers and the mountains and woodland trails likewise for walkers. Many guests love buzzing around the farm trails in the Kubota All Terrain Vehicles provided before heading back to base for evening drinks

around the fire pit, or perhaps in the hot tub for hire.

The caves’ comfy living areas are glass fronted to offer beautiful views. They have spacious bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms, modern kitchen and dining areas and mod-cons such as smart TV and Nespresso Coffee Machine. In addition, the site has two similarly equipped ‘Turn Around’ houses which rotate 360 degrees, enabling guests to enjoy panoramic views of Magilligan foreland and Binevenagh mountain.

Assisting in the management of the business alongside his parents, Ross says the original farm was bought

by his great grandfather in 1942. When it passed down, his own father hatched and executed the idea of building the cave accommodation while his mum provided the stylish interior décor.

“The caves are incredibly special,” he says. “They are really different, have spectacular views and give people the chance to relax completely away from it all.”

Enjoy beautiful Gower coast beaches and wildlife from tranquil cottage hideaways

South west Wales’s stunning Gower Peninsula was the first area of Britain to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, back in 1956. It’s 34 miles of spectacular coastline, perfect beaches, watersports, smugglers’ caves and complex geology make it a magnet for anyone who loves the sea. Berry Hall Cottages make the perfect selfcatering base for people of any age to enjoy it all to the full and they’re within 35 minutes’ walk of Horton and 45 minutes of Oxwich, home to a thriving coastal National Nature Reserve.

The two properties, Berry Hall Cottage and Berry Garden Cottage, stand in the grounds of Berry Hall, an 18th century

farmhouse which is now a charming smallholding with chickens, horses and a flock of delightfully distinctive Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep. Being on a farm lane well away from traffic and noise, the cottages both provide peaceful and supremely comfortable accommodation for four people each within 6 minutes’ drive of Port Eynon and 10 minutes’ drive of Rhossili and Oxwich, all with Blue Flag beaches.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome as well as people. They even have their own clean-up kits of towels and dog wash provided. Both cottages have been fitted and furnished to the highest

standards, ensuring all guests can enjoy a relaxing stay in idyllic surroundings. Guest reviewers rate them with a top notch 5 Stars and are unfailingly complimentary about the cottages themselves, the area and their hosts, Mark and Wendy, with many of them making or planning repeat visits.

Attached to Berry Hall – a large farmhouse - is Berry Hall Cottage, which has been sensitively refurbished to retain its handsome period features while catering for contemporary expectations, for everything from open plan living to smart TV, coffee machines and dishwashers. Nearby Berry Hall Garden Cottage is light,

airy and modern, with the same quality furnishings and fittings and high attention to detail as its companion property. Both have self-contained gardens with beautiful views over farmland. They are ideally situated to book both together for guests wanting to take holidays with extended family.

Wendy says: “We have easy access to the beaches, walks straight from the door and the cottages are in a very quiet and tranquil location.”

Relax with nature at her best in ancient Yorkshire woodland

An Ancient woodland teeming with wildlife is the idyllic setting for people holidaying at Thorney Mire Woodland Retreat in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are few places in the UK where red squirrels come to play and feed so close that you can almost reach out and touch them. There is also an abundance of other wildlife such as woodpeckers, tree creepers, roe deer and owls. These are treats that guests of Thorney Mire’s cottage, cabin and shepherd’s hut may well get to enjoy as they relax in a peaceful setting wrought by nature over more than 400 years.

The cabin and shepherd’s hut are in the woodland itself, as close as breath itself to the plant and animal life all around but also cosy and with modern conveniences such as showers, comfy beds and well-equipped kitchens and wood burning stoves. Pure Yorkshire water comes to both from a borehole and the cabin – handcrafted with reclaimed materials from an old mill - has a star-gazing window above the bed.

The cottage is a beautifully renovated barn conversion opposite woodland which slopes down to Widdale Beck, frequented by roe deer. Pet-friendly, it has facilities including a ground floor wetroom shower and a sofabed as well as a king-sized double for flexible sleeping arrangements. Amenities include a lovely living area with smart TV and French doors on to a patio with barbecue and dining space.

Owners Caroline and Simon have kept the setting as natural as possible, taking care to preserve the ancient woodland in its wild and natural state. Caroline – a keen fell runner - says: “It is as it’s been for hundreds and hundreds of years and our guests frequently say that coming here was just what they needed to escape from their busy lives and to find peace and tranquillity amongst the trees.’’

“There are so many walking trails, people often leave their motor behind. The Pennine Way is on the doorstep and so is the Yorkshire Three Peaks. We have wild swimming here too,

and waterfalls such as Cotter Force and the famous Aysgarth Falls.”

The market town of Hawes a 1.5 mile amble away, with charming shops, pubs, eateries and the Wensleydale Creamery, famous for Wallace & Gromit and delicious cheese.

In a mood for fishing or watersports, many guests head for nearby Lake Semerwater, where they can enjoy swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing. Others head for tourist favourites such as Bolton Castle, a medieval edifice once home to Mary Queen of Scots, with attractive gardens, maze, vineyard and tearoom, near Leyburn. Regular entertainment includes falconry displays and wild boar talks.

Many walkers, cyclists and other lovers of the great outdoors head north to the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, but fewer have discovered the serene surroundings inbetween of Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hartley’s Huts are luxury lodges with private hot tubs in the heart of this amazing landscape, overlooking Burn Fell and handy for the popular tourist town of Skipton.

The lodges have been purposedesigned and hand-built by farmer Stuart Hartley, from timber grown on his farm. Shepherd’s Rest and The Hen Harrier are designed for two people to spend quality time together and The Hartley Hare for a couple with a child, using a king-sized double bed plus a corner sofa bed.

The lodges come furnished and fitted to high contemporary standards, along with their own gardens and parking space along with everything needed for a relaxing, comfortable self-catering stay, from the fuel for the log burner to the towels and toiletries.

They are popular with outdoor adventurers including people attempting the Yorkshire Three

Peaks Challenge to climb the mountains of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent, which are 45 minutes’ drive away.

But they have also become great favourites with people who have something special to celebrate, perhaps a milestone wedding anniversary or a birthday with a nought on the end. The private patios and stunning location lend themselves to romance and relaxation, especially with Dark Skies overhead while soaking languidly with a glass of something special in those convivial hot tubs.

All bookings are taken through Airbnb, which rates Stuart as an experienced and highly regarded ‘superhost’, noting a 5 star rating by guests for the location and check-in experience.

Stuart says: “We’re well placed for sightseeing. A lot of guests go to Pendle Hill, the market towns of Skipton, Clitheroe and Ingleton and waterfalls on the edge of the Dales. The white limestone cliff of Malham Cove is a popular landmark.”

Spread payments for life changing psychotherapy

More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of protecting and nurturing their mental health, especially since the COVID 19 pandemic generated unprecedented levels of stress, anxiety and loneliness. Peaceful Moments Therapy is a wide-ranging counselling and psychotherapy practice which helps people to become more aware of their inner workings and develop strategies to cope and experience greater wellbeing.

The highly qualified and experienced professional behind Peaceful Moments Therapy, Laura Baluta, works with people of all ages, including children, teenagers, couples and families. As a Master of Integrative Psychotherapy, she brings together expertise from a range of respected counselling forms such as Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic and Humanistic, blending them to create bespoke sessions for each individual client.

Fundamentally, Laura’s work helps her clients to access blocked feelings, understand the root causes and gain insights which enable them to find

their own solutions and bring about their own healing and peace of mind.

Her clients have experienced a huge diversity of conditions affecting their mental health, including trauma, abuse, bereavement depression and eating disorders, the latter being one of Laura’s particular specialities. Often, these events affect their physical health too, generating problems such as insomnia, high blood pressure and headaches.

Key to success is creating a safe space in which clients can talk and explore their feelings without being judged. In addition, Laura is an energy healer, offering Reiki treatments either separately or in addition to counselling.

Laura recently ran a number of workshops with Worcestershire County Council to promote good mental health, enjoying very positive feedback. Now she is making Peaceful Moments Therapy available to more people.

“So many people struggling with anxiety, stress and other difficulties,” she says, “But it often takes months

and months before they can see someone on the NHS and the cost of going private is prohibitive for many people, so I have decided to make packages available so people can pay by instalments and spread the cost.

“Hopefully other practices, too, will explore the possibility of doing this because there really is a very profound need.”

Aches? Pains? Tension? Stress

I am a Massage Therapist and Pilates instructor. I specialise in myofascial release, and clinical massage. These employ advanced techniques that aim to reduce chronic pain symptoms, such as lower back pain, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, and joint pain, including arthritis.

Myofascial release is especially favourable for those living with or recovering from cancer, and those with asthma, anxiety, mental health issues, migraines, and fibromyalgia.

I also work to help you improve mobility and provide after care in the form of recommendations

for stretches, breathing and exercise to facilitate the healing.

My clinic is in my garden in Ashperton, near Ledbury.

I have been a massage therapist since 2002, and have worked in Europe, the Middle-East and for the last 10 years, here in the UK.

I am fascinated by the body and its amazing ability to heal; I have always taken a holistic approach to my work and more recently the impact the mind, breathing and one’s environment can have on this journey. Following the biopsychosocial model (body, mind, person, including their environment, work, friend and family relationships) as inspired by Rachel Fairweather, Meghan

Tweedies

Established 2005

Just as we thought we had come through Covid, we are now hit with a serious economic crisis. Christmas will be upon us all too soon and the cost of it even more frightening than last year. So Tweedies have linked up again with County Lifestyle and Leisure Magazine to bring you a September Competition and a chance to win one of the three bears featured this Autumn.

Original, quirky and colourful my hand crafted award winning characters have multiplied to become the magical world of the Tweedies. And the best bit of all?

The dark cream heart on his tummy has an orange middle and is sewn on with yellow blanket stitching. Good luck everyone! And be sure to visit our website for all the up to date bears, mice and tinsel yarn owls hedgehogs and snowmen. And believe me it really is just like knitting tinsel off the Christmas tree! Our prices have been halved for bears and paperweight mice due to our gradual closing down – making them even more affordable this year! They are all waiting for their forever homes.

Aled – Aled has a smart smooth silver-grey Welsh tweed. His ears are lined with scarlet and his feet are scarlet felt scattered with silver stars. On his tummy he has a large purple heart and a smaller white sparkly heart fastened with red stitching. Aled’s hat is purple ribbing; scarlet, white and purple stripes and a scarlet middle. His hand knitted scarf is pure white.

Now all you have to do is answer the following four questions (answers are in the text):

Luxury Care Homes In Worcester

A warm welcome awaits anyone who visits or resides in Woodland View Care Home. I have found all staff to be courteous, professional, kind and caring at all times. Every member of the team is friendly and helpful. The rooms are modern and well-appointed and housekeeping and laundry facilities are good. The varied programme of activities and social events that are on offer suit my mum who tells me the days just ‘fly by’.
