Editor’s Choice BERRY GARDEN COTTAGE

Enjoy beautiful Gower coast beaches and wildlife from tranquil cottage hideaways South west Wales’s stunning Gower Peninsula was the first area of Britain to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, back in 1956. It’s 34 miles of spectacular coastline, perfect beaches, watersports, smugglers’ caves and complex geology make it a magnet for anyone who loves the sea. Berry Hall Cottages make the perfect selfcatering base for people of any age to enjoy it all to the full and they’re within 35 minutes’ walk of Horton and 45 minutes of Oxwich, home to a thriving coastal National Nature Reserve. The two properties, Berry Hall Cottage and Berry Garden Cottage, stand in the grounds of Berry Hall, an 18th century

farmhouse which is now a charming smallholding with chickens, horses and a flock of delightfully distinctive Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep. Being on a farm lane well away from traffic and noise, the cottages both provide peaceful and supremely comfortable accommodation for four people each within 6 minutes’ drive of Port Eynon and 10 minutes’ drive of Rhossili and Oxwich, all with Blue Flag beaches. Well-behaved dogs are welcome as well as people. They even have their own clean-up kits of towels and dog wash provided. Both cottages have been fitted and furnished to the highest

standards, ensuring all guests can enjoy a relaxing stay in idyllic surroundings. Guest reviewers rate them with a top notch 5 Stars and are unfailingly complimentary about the cottages themselves, the area and their hosts, Mark and Wendy, with many of them making or planning repeat visits. Attached to Berry Hall – a large farmhouse - is Berry Hall Cottage, which has been sensitively refurbished to retain its handsome period features while catering for contemporary expectations, for everything from open plan living to smart TV, coffee machines and dishwashers. Nearby Berry Hall Garden Cottage is light,

airy and modern, with the same quality furnishings and fittings and high attention to detail as its companion property. Both have self-contained gardens with beautiful views over farmland. They are ideally situated to book both together for guests wanting to take holidays with extended family. Wendy says: “We have easy access to the beaches, walks straight from the door and the cottages are in a very quiet and tranquil location.” Berry Hall Cottages, Gower Peninsula, SA3 1BB; T 07880 803130, E berryhallcottages@hotmail.com www.cottagesingower.co.uk

Hidden Gem

Exceptional places to enjoy Scottish nature, adventure and culture Caerlaverock Cottages are a portfolio of high quality holiday homes on the Caerlaverock Estate in the beautiful Dumfries and Galloway region of south west Scotland, on the stunning coast of the Solway Firth, where adventure activities are plentiful. There are fascinating places of interest, including the market town of Dumfries itself with its pleasant shops, restaurants, amenities and links to poet Robert Burns and Peter Pan creator J M Barrie. There is also the richly diverse nature lovers’ paradise centred on Caerlaverock Wildlife & Wetlands Trust.

The brothers inherited the family cottage and renovated it as their first holiday let. Eventually Jamie’s brother decided to live in it and Jamie and Laura bought another one to renovate, and from that built up to a collection of seven. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, up to £50,000 worth of bookings were instantly wiped out, but with expert and understanding help from their mortgage lender, Cumberland Building Society, they were able to win through and take advantage of the trend toward staycations.

The two Caerlaverock properties are family owned and provide relaxing, tranquil surroundings with every home comfort within an hour’s drive of Carlisle and Cumbria’s Lake District. Locally, guests are able to participate in golf, sailing, mountain biking, bird watching, castle spotting, foodie experiences and visits to the Book Town of Wigtown and the Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright. Children’s attractions include Mabie Farm Park and Dino Park.

Since then, the couple have built up a steady flow of repeat business from highly satisfied customers and have receded to two properties to concentrate their efforts better on a quality experience for guests.

Chartered surveyor Jamie Cowan, who owns the cottages with his wife, Laura, grew up on the estate with his brother. Their father worked as a gamekeeper and their mother managed a holiday property there, involving the whole family in its running and providing a useful grounding in how to do an exceptional job.

Best known of all the Highland landmarks is the UK’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, towering 4,413 feet in Cairngorms National Park. Breathtaking scenery, beautiful beaches and diverse wildlife are among the many treats to be enjoyed by Highland explorers, sometimes gleaned while taking part in hill climbs, sea sports or other physical activities, sometimes while indulging a love of outdoor art or photography and sometimes while just seeking them out for their own sake. The sea loch Duich is a great vantage point for enjoying them all, including the possibility of sighting otters, seals and porpoises in an area which, with its neighbours Loch Long and Loch Aish, are designated a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area. The Old School House in Letterfearn is an exquisite location overlooking not only Loch Duich but also Eilean Donan Castle, once the stronghold of Clan Mackenzie

Off the Rails is the Plockton village railway station converted to first class holiday accommodation with the jagged peaks of the Cuillin of Skye mountains as a backdrop, while The Grey House in Nethy Bridge accommodates larger groups in great space and comfort in another picturesque Highland village. The spacious Woodside Steading invites you to explore rural Aberdeenshire, starting with the adjacent National Trust house and gardens of Leith Hall, telling the fascinating story of one family over 10 generations.

UK Family Camping & Glamping Sites Many holidaymakers love camping and glamping holidays because of the freedom it gives them from pressure to spend lots of money on consumer goods. Our featured sites have beautiful locations with lots of space and people love simply sharing the experience of exploring it, chatting and winding down together.

Increasingly, people are finding it a valuable way to experience the mental health benefits of chilling out, taking their time and practising ‘mindfulness’ to really focus on relishing the present moment rather than timetabling frenetic activities.

They also exemplify the modern concept of ‘slow tourism’ as an alternative to traditional mass tourism, supporting sustainable living, green technologies and greater personal awareness, with less time spent travelling around by car and more taking the time to explore nearby, perhaps on foot or by bicycle. Visitors find it really rewarding to get to know about the history, culture and customs of the locality where they are staying, spotting the wildlife and simply enjoying their holiday freedom.

On farm-based sites such as MacDonalds in Padstow, Cornwall, Low Farm Park in Lincolnshire and The Daggles in Dorset, the presence of livestock, tractors and associated activities can be absolutely fascinating and sometimes even an opportunity to gain some informal education. Our chosen sites also invariably show great respect for the environment, encouraging

UK Family Camping & Glamping Sites Our chosen camping and glamping sites all provide quality accommodation in the UK’s most sublime countryside. We’ve already referred above to Cae Llwyd in Snowdonia, Wheal Busy, Trevalgan and MacDonalds in Cornwall, Low Farm Park in Lincolnshire and The Daggles in Dorset. Now we add Cledan Valley in the unspoiled terrain of Mid-Wales where red kites, bats and even stoats hang out; Three Fields Campsite in Pembrokeshire – known for its splendidly scenic coastal National Park – and The Wildings Elms Meadow, ideally placed for exploring the Suffolk coast and Norfolk Broads and famous nature reserves such as Minsmere and Orford Ness.

While great beaches are always popular, some attractions are perhaps less obvious, such as the tin and copper mining heritage sites of Cornwall and the breweries and vineries of Suffolk. Pembrokeshire offers not only great seaside towns but the UK’s smallest city, St Davids and the Milton Waterfront at Milton Haven with its vibrant modern marina, shops, restaurants and activities. Dorset has not only its famous Jurassic Coast but a wealth of National Trust properties and a deep literary legacy from Thomas Hardy. Lincolnshire is famous for its Wolds but perhaps less known for its intriguing ‘lost town’ of Folkingham, with a rich history but depleted status, nonetheless today championing courses for modern craft skills through Folkingham Creative Arts.

All of these are special locations, with an abundance of natural beauty and our chosen hosts all have a wealth of knowledge to help their guests enjoy their holiday experience to the full, whether they are content to stay close to base or wish to venture further afield.

UNPLUGGED CAMPING FOR FAMILY & FRIENDS BELL TENT, YURT & SHEPHERDS HUT CAMPING IN A SECLUDED MID WALES VALLEY Tucked away in the wilds of Mid Wales lies a small, unspoiled valley surrounded by hills and streams. It is here that a local couple who wished to share their love of this wonderful place with others, created a unique camping site with Bell Tents, Yurts and a Shepherds Hut. Unlike many of the modern ‘glamping’ sites Cledan Valley is more than canvas shelters in the corner of a field. It is a really wild and natural place. Other than a few strimmed walkways around the nine acre site, the grass, trees, and wildlife go about their business as if you were not here. We have an amazing array of flora and fauna and it is possible to see otters, red kites and much more without leaving your tent. Spectacularly beautiful scenery is a hallmark of the Scottish Borders, but so too is the lure of golf! There are some 21 courses in the region – made up of the former counties of Berwickshire, Peeblesshire, Roxburghshire, and Selkirkshire – including those on the clifftops. Health & Beauty I am a reflexologist, with 30 years of nursing experience behind me. I am passionate about helping women go from feeling “meh” to marvellous”, and from “frazzled” to “fabulous”! If you are going through perimenopause and battling hot flushes, anxiety, low mood, joint pains, insomnia, brain fog or more, then reflexology will help. Reflexology can also help with endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome, painful periods, and so much more. As a reflexologist, I press specific points on the feet, which correspond to parts of the body. By stimulating over 7,000 nerve endings, messages are sent to the brain to make it aware where systems are over- or under-stimulated. These imbalances cause the symptoms you are experiencing. Reflexology helps to rebalance the body and heal itself.

The treatment lasts between 50-60 minutes, during which time you will experience a sense of deep relaxation, maybe even fall asleep. The best bit is that you only have to take off your socks and shoes! I work from my home in Droitwich, but having been a district nurse, I also offer home visits for those not able to get out, or upstairs. There is an additional fee for this service to cover my travel costs, but I feel it is important that everyone has the chance to experience the benefits of reflexology.
