Boutique Retreats is an exceptional holiday company bringing together an inspirational range of luxurious, unique and amazing places to stay in the United Kingdom. The handpicked, curated collections range from heavenly hideaway cottages for couples to grand period mansions with grounds for larger families and groups, all carrying the hallmarks of soul and sincerity. The properties stand in locations of great beauty, both inland and coastal. All equipped for a highend experience with sumptuous interiors, quality appliances and magnificent views, they invariably exceed guests’ expectations with a magical mix of bespoke service, individual style, thoughtful aesthetics and personal touches. The Boutique Retreats team are travel professionals who bring personal experience and expertise to each individual property, always seeking the next great place and amenities to facilitate guests in creating special memories from one once-in-a-lifetime moment to the next. Nearly 300 luxury homestays grace the Boutique Retreats portfolio, from quaint, thatched cottages to sleek, modern retreats, many of them dog-friendly. Since 2007, the company has bridged the gap between boutique hotels and traditional holiday cottages, injecting character and innovation into luxury self-catering staycations from the tip of Cornwall’s Lizard Point to the windswept Isle of Skye.

There is real passion behind the choice and content of properties in what is an ever-evolving brand of excellence. For example, Kowetha, is a delightful cliffside cabin for two on Cornwall’s Whitsand Bay, seriously romantic with its immense sea views and hand-crafted interiors of blackened steel, reclaimed wooden floors, Moroccan tiles and tactile home furnishings. A log burner, hot tub, smart TV and even a library help make staycation bliss inevitable. Just as indulgent but totally different is a former schoolhouse in the pretty Wiltshire village of Lavender, near Bath, catering for up to 10 people. Standing in manicured grounds, it embodies effortless charm through every honey-coloured stone wall, being simultaneously snug and spacious, with a true foodies’ kitchen centred on an Aga, a cinema room and five bedrooms including a master with a king-sized four poster bed.

REVIEW FROM THE EDITOR When my husband and I were kindly invited to stay at The Cottage in the Wood Malvern, we quickly realised this was something really special! This fantastic venue wasn’t a cottage in a wood, but a hotel on a hill! Set in woodland high above Malvern, it had breathtaking views across the Severn Valley and Cotswolds. Warmly welcomed, we were seated outside to enjoy a stunning afternoon tea, featuring freshly-brewed tea in china cups, delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with lashings of clotted cream and jam, dainty cakes and homemade pastries. Full, we retired to a beautiful bedroom with a balcony, perfect for enjoying those views! The comfy bed was huge. Later, we sampled the restaurant’s fabulous Tasting Menu. Our favourites among many highly inventive selections included mouthwatering cod with Cornish mussel, saffron, carrot and vermouth and a dessert of pineapple, rum, cheesecake ice cream, upside down cake and coconut. All dishes were quite possibly the nicest foods we had ever tasted! After a night’s deep sleep, we tucked into a full English Breakfast, a wholesome spread with fresh fruits, yogurts and cereals, warm bread, locally sourced bacon and sausages, served in a gorgeous, light-filled dining room. It was yet more perfection on a plate, memorable to the last delicious mouthful.

Rest and relax at a friendly Lake District inn

Dramatic sea views and rare wildlife are just some of the treats to be enjoyed from the luxury clifftop selfcatering cabins of Castlecraig Farm, in the Scottish Highlands. Guests can gaze through floor to ceiling windows, maybe spotting dolphins or stargazing from a private hot tub.

At the heart of the lovely Lake District stands The Swan, one of more than 30 quality premises with pubs, rooms and great food in The Inn Collection Group, which is building a highly reputable reputation across northern England. Freshly refurbished and with a great location near the walkers’ paradise of Grasmere, The Swan has a welcoming ambience and is perfectly placed for exploring the Lake District National Park and iconic locations such as Ambleside, Hawkshead and Bowness on Windermere.

The cabins are on a family-run farm on the peninsula of Easter Ross, with cows, sheep and crops of malting barley. It’s an excellent location for either increasingly fashionable ‘slow tourism’ - taking real notice and interest in the local history, culture and surroundings where you stay - or the more traditional holiday seeing the sights over a wider area, via the scenic North Coast 500 road touring route which runs nearby. Castlecraig overlooks both the Moray Firth and the entrance to the Cromarty Firth, with views to the Black Isle and famous Great Glen. Two cabins sleep four, having a master bedroom with a king-sized bed, a kitchen/living area with a sofa bed for two, a bathroom with shower and outside decking, and a wood burning stove. The other two cabins are similar, but with second bedrooms with double beds which can convert to twin. Using the sofa bed, they sleep up to six. All are well placed for beautiful

and interesting walks, mountain bike trails, superb beaches, local amenities including shops, pubs and restaurants and the thriving nature reserve of Nigg Bay. Castlecraig Farm, Nigg Tain, Ross-Shire IV19 1QS. T 01862 851376 E hello@castlecraigfarm.com www.castlecraigfarm.com

Mentioned in the poem The Waggoner by Willilam Wordsworth one of the renowned local residents of the past - The Swan sits in its own grounds just outside Grasmere and has views towards the peak of nearby Helm Crag. It is within easy reach of popular tourist favourites such as Beatrix Potter’s charming home, Hill Top House and Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage. The choice of en-suite bedrooms ranges from cosy doubles with kingsized beds to twin rooms and family variations, with some designated dog friendly. One of the hallmarks of The Swan is the quality of the food offerings, from the appetising and varied breakfast menus to the generous lunches

including pub favourites, seasonal specialities and sweet treats, all made with quality Cumbrian produce and cooked with care in kitchens which maintain the strictest hygiene standards. Cornish Cottage Escapes Cornwall’s southern coast is a truly idyllic area for holidaymakers, dotted all along with charming fishing villages and pretty coves edged by rugged rocks and sandy shores. The beautifully located self-catering properties of Creekside Cottages, Star Cottage at the family-friendly beach resort of Praa Sands and Kynance Cottage on the Lizard Peninsula all provide wonderful bases from which to explore the coastal and countryside treasures, as well as providing everything you could need to enjoy your inbetween time to the full. Everywhere, there are lovely walks and bike trails, and the wildlife is plentiful. Lizard’s rare habitat makes it home to some of the scarcest, including Cornish Heather. Rock hunters come here to find serpentine, dark green with red and white veins. Tales of shipwrecks and smugglers abound, as do cosy pubs and tearooms proffering pasties and cream teas.

For people planning a winter visit, Mousehole Harbour Lights are a celebrated annual feature and here, especially on Tom Bawcock’s Eve, December 23, you may even find another local delicacy, stargazy pie, baked with pilchard heads poking through pastry. It celebrates a catch which saved the village from starvation after a stormy 16th century winter which kept boats in harbour. Fisherman Tom Bawcock became a local hero when he braved the weather and caught enough to feed the entire village.

Luxurious and individual waterside, rural and village self-catering holiday cottages on Cornwall’s sheltered and calm south coast – with many just yards from the water’s edge. Nestled in the south coast of Cornwall between Truro and Falmouth are the properties of Creekside Cottages. The local family letting agency that has been in current owner Martin Watson’s family since 1956 – you can be confident of their knowledge to make your holiday one to remember.

The cottages are all located in the quaint villages of Devoran, Flushing, Malpas, Mylor and Restronguet on Cornwall’s south coast. The landscape here gives way to the calm sheltered waters of the upper reaches of the River Fal; just the sort of peaceful Cornish countryside in which you could while away hours, messing around on boats, walking along the paths on the banks of the creek or tucked up in a traditional Cornish pub.

The portfolio of properties personally selected by Creekside Cottages has something to suit all holiday dreams, sleeping 2 – 10. An expansive range of Dog-Friendly properties, some even have their own moorings for those boating enthusiast. Choose to visit Cornwall and find a home away from home which will suit you perfectly. Away-stays in Somerset offer a real escape from urban life, with vast expanses of wild, beautiful and unspoilt terrain and a dramatic share of the English coast split between the Bristol Channel and the Atlantic Sea. Exmoor’s northern edge spans the space between Minehead and Combe Martin on the Devon boundary, near where the Great Hangman is England’s highest sea cliff at a towering 800 feet tall. One great place to stay in the vicinity is at the beautiful barn conversions of Yeo Valley, based in Rhodyate and perhaps better known for its exquisite yoghurt and other dairy products but now much diversified and offering rural stays in an idyllic setting in the beautiful Mendip Hills.

Both here and at Minehead’s splendid Woodcombe Lodges and Cottages you won’t be far from one of the most dramatic scenes in England, Cheddar Gorge, an amazing limestone landmark featuring some of Britain’s best show caves and the very pleasant village which gave us Cheddar cheese, still made with panache and widely available to savour while looking out for wild goats and souvenirs. If you’re tempted to stay permanently, check out the holiday homes available at the pleasant nearby seaside resort of The Retreat Caravan Park, Burnham on Sea.

LAKE DISTRICT

Leading the way in accessible, outdoor adventure - 25% off this Winter!

32

At Calvert Lakes, we believe The Lake District should be accessible to everyone. Our residential breaks help people with a range of disabilities experience the Lake District in a safe and supportive way, delivering a fun and fulfilling experience that makes a positive difference in their lives.

The promotion, which runs from 1 November 2023 until 29 February 2024 and applies to all new bookings, is available to guests if one person in their group – adult or child – is disabled. This year, 55% of disabled people are abandoning plans for outdoor activity breaks due to the cost-of-living crisis – at a huge cost to their physical and mental health.

This Winter, we are combatting the cost-of-living crisis by offering 25% off all in-inclusive, multi-activity breaks for the next four months to address the financial pressures its visitors face.

“If disabled people cut back on muchneeded breaks in the great outdoors due to financial pressures their physical and mental health will suffer,” said Sean Day, Chief Executive at the Lake District Calvert Trust.

“Our aim is to stop that from happening and we very much hope our discounted packages will help. Prices at the centre are all-inclusive as well as being subsidised by our own fund-raising efforts. We are also hugely grateful to generous benefactors who enable us to provide bursary funding.” To find out more and enquire, visit www.calvertlakes.org.uk

Christmas Christmas is about family, celebration, getting together with friends, giving and sharing. Dip into these pages and find where you can do all that and more, in style, this December. Christmas shopping is great fun for some but a bit of a headache for others, when they can’t find the right something special to give to the people they’re trying to use. The perfect piece they’re seeking may be just a page or two away! Lovely Leamington Spa has a splendid array of shops from high street names to classy independents, with the Royal Priors mall at its heart. Fashion and footwear, books and stationery, toiletries, trinkets, festive food & drink, whatever you’re after is almost certain to be found.

For extra special individual gifts, think of original artworks, perhaps an exquisite wire tree or animal by Lynne Littler Sculpture or one of the intricately detailed pictures by Peaches Duncan Fine Art. Perennial, the charity supporting people involved in horticulture, has an online shop with cards and gifts to please the gardeners in your life, while Nellies Fabric Shop in Pershore has a huge array of materials for knitters, stitchers and other craftspeople. Bloomery provides bespoke floral designs to ensure your home is primed for guests, and Bijou Beauty has treatments to ensure you look your best when going to eat out. Perhaps you’ll take afternoon tea at the vintage-styled Sugar Plum Tearooms or lunch in the delightfully rustic surroundings of Jinny Ring, Hanbury, a craft centre where you can see professionals at work and snap up their creations for yourself or your friends. If you have children in your orbit, you could treat them to a ride on the Santa Trains of Severn Valley Railway, or the Snow White pantomime running in Redditch until January 3. Christmas

It’s Christmas Thyme! The holly and the ivy, the Christmas tree to the mistletoe, you can always count on nature for a green Christmas. And, from stocking fillers to garden days out as the only charity in the UK who helps everyone in horticulture whether working or retired, we’ve got the gifts all wrapped up. Send season’s greetings with jolly card designs. Deck trees with special garden-themed decorations. Give hard-working gardeners a tea break with stoneware mugs or bring beautiful views to friends and family all year round with calendars and diaries. Whether it’s a special present which gives a nod to someone’s love of nature, a more practical choice for gardening or a gift that transforms lives, there’s something for everyone. And remember, with every order you’ll be giving a gift of support to those in the horticultural community.

Fill your festive basket at perennial.org.uk/shop

Visit our gift shop at The Laskett Garden, Herefordshire. Some of our festive gifts are also available at our local garden The Laskett, which is stunning at this time of year, full of garden jewels and warming seasonal treats. Visitors can enjoy seasonal shopping during our Advent days in December away from the bustling high street at our gift shop. The Laskett is an autobiographical garden of the arts, open to the public. Sir Roy Strong CH and his late wife Julia Trevelyan Oman CBE started the garden from a bare field in 1974, transforming it into garden rooms with idyllic countryside views.

Hoe, hoe, hoe... Find all the festive gifts you need at perennial.org.uk/ shop

Join us for Advent at The Laskett, on 2, 3, 9 and 10 December, on the Saturday or Sunday, 2:30pm or 5pm. Booking is essential at thelaskett.org.uk
