Dog Friendly Escapes We’ve long been renowned as a national of animal lovers, and an extra 3.2 million people reportedly acquired a new pet during the COVID pandemic. Now, it seems many of the UK’s 11 million or so dog owners are so loathe to leave their pets behind when they go on staycation that the tourism industry has kindly responded by making their often luxurious premises available to both four-legged holidaymakers and their owners. In these few pages you will find an astonishingly great range of holiday properties which actively welcome dogs as their guests. One doesn’t permit humans to stay without them! Whichever you choose, you can be sure they’ll be woof and ready to help you make the most of the best country walks and wanders you could imagine.

Heading into Scotland, The Haven at Bladnoch is along the Solway coast just near the book lovers’ paradise of Wigtown and the picturesque Galloway Forest Park, in an area renowned for mountain biking, dark skies and stunning gardens. Dogs are true VIPS at Sail Mhor View in the north west Highlands, ‘proper dog friendly’ and overlooking a lovely loch. It’s one of very few holiday lets with space for people with multiple dogs of any size and where they’re allowed not only in the enclosed garden but also indoors and even up on the furniture.

DURNAMUCK, WEST ROSS

Sail Mhor View, the home of holidays for people with multiple dogs. Sail Mhor View is our beautiful, detached cottage, overlooking Little Loch Broom in the stunning North West Highlands. All on one level, with a fully enclosed garden, we are proud to call ourselves Proper Dog Friendly, welcoming multiple dogs free of charge. Dogs of all sizes are welcome – from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, and everything in between! As multiple dog owners ourselves, we understand how difficult it can be to find somewhere that is both truly dog welcoming, and of a high standard, and comfort, for the hoomans coming with them, especially when you’ve more than a couple of dogs. Sail Mhor View gives you the best of both worlds – modern home comforts, combined with a relaxed and cosy place for your dogs to share, so that all members of the family (adults only 18+), whether two legs, or more, can enjoy their holiday. Especially for multi-dog owners Because we understand just how hard it is to find somewhere to holiday with a pack, we don’t take bookings where the number of hoomans significantly outweighs the number of dogs. This ensures our availability for those with larger packs, and more limited options. (It goes without saying that we don’t take bookings without any dogs at all)!

NORFOLK

Close your eyes and relax... Imagine the sight of lightly flowing water as the sun’s rays dance off the ripples, a slight breeze and the tranquillity broken only by the splash of wildlife playing in the shallows protected by reed beds. Consider warm sand between your toes, a refreshing ice cream and the happy tones of families enjoying their time on the beach. Admire the view from the coastal path as you take in the majesty of the North Sea. All this and more awaits you in Norfolk where you can take life down a gear or two and really unwind. Right on the edge of the Norfolk Broads you will discover the perfect location for the holiday you deserve, Low Farm Barns. Also offering easy access, just a short walk away, to some of the best beaches the county has to offer, our small but exceptionally high standard development will provide you with the opportunity to really relax in comfort. Our holiday development holds three separate and exquisitely converted barns: Samphire, Sedge, for up to 4 people, and Pin Rush sleeping up to 8, plus the fully refurbished Farm House. The three barns have recently been sympathetically restored to an exceptionally high standard and great care has been taken to ensure that the unmistakable original character of each building is retained. The barns display breath-taking décor and are provided with every modern convenience such Wi-Fi and Nespresso coffee makers; thus making for an elegant, spacious and comfortable place to stay. Peace and serenity are guaranteed during your stay, with each barn having its own individual courtyard and garden. Furthermore, to ensure an easy and practical stay for everyone, all three properties have ample parking provided. Sitting amongst fields which change colours with the seasons, and surrounded by nature, the Farm House has a practical off road parking area close to the homes main entrance. Through the main entrance hall is an open plan kitchen/dining area, spacious and fully equipped, with a range cooker, microwave, fridge/ freezer and Nespresso coffee machine. Attached to the kitchen is a tilled utility room with a back door, perfect for wet dogs who need to dry off after a fresh country walk! The dining area opens up to a large enclosed garden with a patio area, completed with garden furniture and BBQ plus bike storage & deck chairs available if required. Here at Low Farm Barns we are passionate that our guests will enjoy the perfect stay in our accommodation. Hence we offer those ‘little touches’ and extras, such as our welcome pack, to ensure that you have the essentials ready to start your holiday. We also offer hot tub rental. In order for you to be able to put your feet up and relax as one should on holiday, we offer additional bespoke meal options where we will prepare a delicious meal for you, though still giving you the flexibility to eat when you want. If you really want to indulge you can even ‘add on’ a fine bottle of champagne so you can unwind with a glass of bubbles, during the day or night! What is perhaps most exciting is the fact that we have an onsite Holistic and Beauty treatment room: ‘The Lavender Room,’ a place of total tranquillity, where Vicki Rayner has plenty of pampering options to ensure some ‘you time’ on your break. This will undeniably provide the luxurious haven we crave when away.

ESCAPE TO The Forest of Dean

and Wye Valley

People are often awe-stricken by the Forest of Dean, a 200 square mile triangle of gorgeous Gloucestershire land flanking Wales and broadly bordered by the Wye and Severn rivers. In ancient times, its verdant mixed woodland was prized as a royal hunting ground. Now it provides a popular backdrop and graded trails for walkers and cyclists, while the rivers provide fun and adventure for first time paddleboarders, wild swimmers and white water kayakers, not to mention excellent facilities for picnicking, golf, horse riding, rock climbing and caving. Symonds Yat Rock, home to an Iron Age hillfort, is a famous viewing point for stunning views of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s just over 10 miles from the

choice accommodation featured here in Newland - Rookery Cottage and Woofield Accommodation – and less than 20 miles from the luxurious Wyelets self-catering cottages and Dryslade Farm bed & breakfast. Bones of sabre-toothed tigers, hyenas and even a mammoth have been found here, although nowadays you’re more likely to see peregrine falcons and other birds of prey. Symonds Yat holds the title ‘Birthplace of British Tourism’ since being popularised by William Gilpin, an 18th century artist, cleric and travel writer who pioneered the Picturesque movement. Exploration reveals iron ore workings, folklore and landmarks such as the Seven Sisters rocky outcrop.

The Rookery Cottage is in the village of Newland in Gloucestershire. The village is built around the magnificent parish church dating from around 1216, which is known as the “Cathedral of the Forest”. The Ostrich Inn public house, which dates from 1694, is within 300 yards and must be one of the most atmospheric pubs in the county. It is a free house serving a varied menu. The village is two miles from the River Wye, and is well located for walking, cycling and sightseeing. There are four golf courses within the locality. The town of Coleford is within three miles, where there is a selection of shops, banks and two supermarkets. Monmouth, which is approximately six miles away, has more varied and specialist shopping. The Rookery Cottage has been sympathetically converted to provide accommodation for two in Newland, a picturesque village in the Forest of Dean bordering on the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Cottage is a converted stable – the original building is over 150 years old and is adjacent to a coach house conversion. Legend has it that a Derby winner was once stabled there. The Cottage provides well equipped and comfortable accommodation. There is a private courtyard garden next to a babbling brook.

Exposed rocks and land formations in Lochaber Geopark provides some of the country’s deepest history to those with eyes to see. Fort William has many great places to enjoy good food and drink, much of it produced locally, with great skill and pride. And who could resist the invitation of Ben Nevis Distillery to take a tour to discover the Dew of Ben Nevis?

‘Dail an Draighinn’ is Gaelic for “thorny leaves” or “briars”. The house is in the hamlet of Stronchreggan (Sron a’chreagain “Nose of the rocks”), the imposing mountain at the end of the glacially formed Glen Stronchreggan (behind the house) has a rocky outcrop resembling a nose on its summit.

The wildlife is in abundance. The large grass area leading to the loch shore regularly has deer grazing in the evening. A pair of golden eagles nest in the glen behind the house and frequently fly over while hunting for food. Red squirrel, pine marten, seals and otters have all been seen and during the summer months alongside swallows which return each year to nest and rear their young, several pairs have their permanent nests around the house. And we must not forget the local sheep who also have their favourite spots! This part of the Highlands of Scotland offers very varied activities. A narrow gauge railway runs close by, built especially for tourists rather than slate or coal. The workings which relate to slate and coal, however, are another UNESCO World heritage Site spanning these parts and telling a remarkable story of industrial ingenuity and success.
