Winter wonderlands I
’m so excited to be writing my first edition of Your Yorkshire Wedding – and what I’ve found from scrolling the wedding galleries from our three local newlyweds that feature as ‘Real Weddings’ in this issue is that Yorkshire couples really know how to tie the know in style, wow! As my colleagues now know, I’m a true romantic and was blubbing away in the office as I saw the precious images captured from our couples’ big days. This month, I went to my first wedding since the restrictions lifted and it felt so good to hug and share a glass of bubbles (or three) with friends and loved ones once again. The venue was bursting with good vibes and the dancefloor was full with guests eager to let loose once again! Our music and entertainment feature on page 75 will give you some excellent ideas if you’re still looking for a DJ, band or even singing waiters to get people busting a groove on your big day! As we’re well into the autumn/ winter months we also have a fabulous photography feature on p49 entitled Come Rain or Shine. This proves that no matter what time of year, and no matter what the weather may bring on your chosen day – do not worry – you will still have the time of your lives. And do you know what? So called ‘bad weather’ makes for some wonderfully dramatic shots! We also have a spotlight on Winter Wonderland venues, so if you’re dreaming of a cosy wedding complete with roaring fireplaces and fur shawls check out our feature on p19. I can’t wait to hear from more of you and continue to promote all things Yorkshire. To submit your own nuptials to grace the pages of Your Yorkshire Wedding, get in touch via our website www.youryorkshire.wedding/get-involved
If only I could get married again to have this dried floral hoop from Grace and Bob’s big day on page 23.

SOMETHING NEW
Kate Fearnley has proudly announced the launch of her new bridal collection, ‘Awaken’. The 12-piece collection is the second from the award-winning British designer, inspired by the reawakening of her love of creativity, new beginnings and the awakening of the world in general, focusing on a lighter look on modern life. Kate Fearnley has seen some significant changes over the last year. The period of enforced reflection led to a move of premises, swapping the busy town centre high street of Middlesbrough for the beautiful and tranquil north Yorkshire countryside, and her hometown of Stokesley. Awaken includes romantic designs, with modern and fashion forward silhouettes featuring the brand’s signature style enhanced with delicate feathers, hand-finished embroidery and threedimensional embellishment. The gowns are relaxed yet luxurious, with movement, freedom and comfort at the forefront of Kate’s mind, using beautiful soft stretch laces, feathers, embroidery and sequins, coupled with vintage inspired lace and the softest of tulles and stretch satin. All the gowns are hand produced at the Stokesley boutique, with originality, quality and sustainability at the core of everything the British brand creates. Stockists are welcome to get in touch to stock the brand, which were also showcased at Harrogate Bridal Fashion Week in September. Visit the website https://katefearnley.com for more information.
YOUR ESSENTIALS LUSH LASHES
Lash Ribbons, based in Huddersfield, recently launched a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly DIY lash system. This beauty product, which is also called a Lash Ribbon, is a 15-16cm strip of lightweight lash segments presented on an ultra-thin band. The band has been extensively developed so that the customer can place it underneath their own lashes without any discomfort and can be double or even triple stacked to create the most voluminous set of lash extensions. The business was developed during lockdown after recognising a niche in the lash extension market. Rachael Hanley, managing director said, “I wanted to bring to the market a lash extension system that was the most customisable whilst remaining the most affordable. I’m pleased to say I’ve now achieved this. Not only are the lash ribbons vegan friendly but are completely reusable.” For further information, visit https://lashribbons.com

HAPPILY MARRIED IN SHEFFIELD
It’s official, if you want to be in with the best chance of having a long, happy marriage − you should move to Sheffield. Believe it or not, greetings card manufacturer Scribbler’s recent survey found that: in Sheffield, 92.3 per cent of married adults describe their marriages as being happy. That’s higher than any other major city in the UK. The second most happily married city is Manchester, where 90.3 per cent of married individuals say their marriages are happy. This is then followed by Newcastle (89.6 per cent), Southampton (89.58 per cent) and Plymouth (89.29 per cent). A third of all survey respondents said that they were happily married, and that number jumps to almost half (48 per cent) of all over 55s. Also, a quarter of all respondents said that they had never been married but would like to be. And of the divorcees who responded to the survey, 42 per cent said that they would happily marry again despite having been divorced. To view the entire survey, visit: www.scribbler.com/Blog 9

The couple share a passion of travel so it was only right that the engagement happened on holiday. Grace tells us, “We went back to Greece which is where we had our first holidays together! I booked the restaurant and planned the evening however had no idea he was going to propose. The waiter brought a bottle of Moet with the ring in the ice bucket. I have a video of bob before he asked me and he actually looks so nervous!” The wedding planning commenced and Grace Wilkinson married Robert Beaumont at Holmfirth Vineyard on 2nd July, 2021. REAL WEDDINGS
Y
orkshire born ACP nurse Katie met Neil whilst he was posted in Catterick with the military. Just six months after them meeting he was posted to Northern Ireland. Proving long distance can work, their romance went from strength to strength. Katie tells us, “We met through mutual friends and for me, it was love at first sight.” Romance flourished and Neil eventually proposed on holiday in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Katie recalls the story that they could have been engaged earlier in the year but Neil forgot to pack the ring! “Neil had just returned from Afghanistan and we had booked a luxury holiday to Mexico. I was sure this is where he was going to propose. On the last night, we had a special 12-course meal booked – I thought this is it – but it never happened. I couldn’t believe it! I later found out once we were engaged that he’d forgotten to pack the ring!”
WEDDING PLANNING Having looked at numerous wedding venues, the couple kept coming away disappointed. However, there was something special about Grantley Hall, as Katie explains. “I was researching all these venues and kept thinking, there must be one. We were in the car having visited yet another venue and passed the entrance to Grantley Hall; I said, ‘Neil you have to drive in, this is it!’ He was obviously dubious asking how I could tell from a set of gates but I could just feel it. We pulled up in a dusty car park and I rang the venue. A lady called Sarah answered and she explained to me it was still a building site and that she couldn’t let us in unless we wore a hard hat and high-vis vest. I replied, ‘I’m game if you are!’ Sarah talked us through the vision and showed me the plans and I was in love with it before it was even built. The Japanese garden was ready and I was blown away by its calmness and beauty. The entrance is so grand – it really is the venue of dreams. It’s like a fairytale.” Following numerous health scares and hospital appointments, and having to rearrange the wedding due to Covid, the couple couldn’t quite believe the day was finally happening. “It was absolutely incredible,” shares Katie. “It had been a tough 18 months. I think seeing me walk down the aisle happy and healthy made some people very emotional. When I got to the end of the aisle and Neil held my hand I knew he was proud of me.”
SETTING THE SCENE Katie ensured she covered every small detail when looking after their guests. “We had flip flops for the guests in a basket labelled ‘a little treat for your dancing feet’ as well as sunglasses labelled ‘don’t be blinded by our love!’ There was also hand gel, fans and umbrellas for shade. We had a beautiful sweet cart and a huge doughnut wall. We also had little shots on the table saying ‘we tied the knot please take a shot’.” Sweet Brothers Events assisted with the décor. Katie tells us, “For the centrepieces I had huge blossom trees. My flowers, from Mae Dae really made me emotional. My bouquets were made of orchids and white roses. Along the aisle on the outside, I had eight perspex pillars with large floral arrangements on them matching my bouquet, and at the end of the aisle a very full and beautiful moongate.” The pair really went to town with their entertainment, from well-known magician Matthew Magic to singing waiters, plus fire eaters and a showgirl from TF Productions. The music continued throughout the day with soul band Ear Candy and the couple ended the celebrations with the private hire of Grantley Hall’s champagne and cocktail bar, Valerias.
LOOKING THE PART The bride really wanted a memorable dress, something different to what the guests would have expected from her usual style and this is exactly what she achieved. “My Dress was a Milla Nova dress I bought from the Wedding Dress Club London” Katie reveals. “It was made in Barcelona and shipped over. Everyone thought I’d go for a fishtail-design but I wanted something regal but modern. It had a sharp square neckline, and the entire gown was covered in sequins with very fine floral stitching. I was actually one of the first brides in the UK to wear this dress because I was lucky enough to try it on during Milla Nova’s trunk show in London
29
REAL WEDDINGS before the pandemic.” Neil worn a tuxedo with a scoop waistcoat. Having an eye for good tailoring Neil didn’t expect to find it on the high street but Moss Bros. did not disappoint. Katie continues, “All the groomsmen wore matching tuxedos. It was important to me that they were all very uniformed and everything matched. The bridesmaids wore a Jarlo London dress in a champagne hue, full sequin with a cowl neck and mermaid-style tail.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The day was full of fun, laughter and high emotions. Katie remembers, “Having my son, George, watch me get married was so special to me, a memory I’ll cherish forever. I remember looking out of the royal suite and seeing Neil and George opening the card I got for my husband-to-be. I could see them both looking very smart and I felt so proud. Our florist, Mae Dae, really went above and beyond. She even made me a balloon arch to go above my bed because I didn’t get a hen do and she wanted me to have a special night the evening before with my bridesmaids. My photographer, Carn Patrick also came on board with only a week to spare and he was fantastic. Due to Covid and my health I hadn’t been up the venue to have face-to-face planning and he literally was like my wedding planner in a week!”
31
Katie’s top tip: “I’m always early for everything! Plan at least to be ready two hours early so you can enjoy photographs. Iron all your dressing gowns the night before and make sure everything is ready for when you need it. Also, a fresh head. I don’t drink alcohol so I felt fresh and energised on the day.” END CREDITS Venue and catering, www.grantleyhall.co.uk | Photographer, www.carnpatrick.com | Videographer, https://fireandice.co.uk | Bride’s dress, https://millanova.com | Menswear, www.moss.co.uk | Bridesmaids’ dresses, www.jarlolondon.com | Hair, Rebecca Higham Hair, www.instagram.com/rebecca_higham_hair_stylist and https://www.facebook.com/ReviveHS | Make-up, www.ccmakeupartistry.co.uk and Lucy Stevens Make-up | Flowers, http://maedae.co.uk | Décor, https://sweetbrothers.events | Violinist, www.alexandraviolinist.co.uk Showgirl/Fire eater, www.totallyflirt.co.uk | Magician, www.matthewjmagic.co.uk | Dove release, https://dovesforalloccasions.co.uk

REAL WEDDINGS
I ALWAYS
Bex and Kiegan Bottomley tied the knot in style at Saltmarshe Hall Images courtesy of Alfie Wright, Clique Visuals
W
edding romances don’t get much sweeter than this as Bex and Kieg locked eyes in primary school! “I like your wellies” a shy Kieg told Bex. Amazingly, those pink, sparkly wellies were remembered some 15 years later when they met again. Kiegan popped the question on a weekend away in Manchester – however Bex didn’t make it plain sailing! “I was so hungry but Kieg insisted on going back to the hotel.” Bex recalls, “I was ‘hangry’ and he forced me to get ready. The next thing I knew, he was on one knee. He’d been super-secretive with his phone and I actually thought he was cheating on me!” Following that romantic weekend, Rebecca Stanton, 24 married Kiegan Bottomley, 26 on 11th July, 2021at Saltmarshe Hall with a ‘timeless elegance’ theme of nudes, pinks and whites. Bex gives us the lowdown of the finer details… 35
For favours, we chose vinyl/acrylic name places for people to keep. With Covid still being quite rife we had a few last-minute changes so decided against a table plan.
We love the finer things in life and as soon as we saw Saltmarshe we knew it was the one. We loved the long sweeping drive and the grand exterior, while the interiors offered a modern twist yet still complementing the historic building.
Our centrepieces were a mixture of small and large floral arrangements to create different heights on the tables. 36
We had a variety of flowers that matched the colour scheme that were completely timeless and elegant.
REAL WEDDINGS
We tried to vary the catering as we absolutely love food. For canapés we had mini fish and chips, pulled pork sliders and duck spring rolls, the starter was a soy and honey glazed chicken with crispy noodle salad, the main was roast beef and dessert, lemon tart.
I wore a Zavana bridal gown. I always knew I wanted a tight fitted dress that wasn’t too over the top. I wore a cathedral-length veil, pearl earrings and a Tiffany diamond necklace.
Kieg wore a tweed suit in a sage hue. He stood out from the groomsmen who wore blue checked tweed designs.
The bridesmaids wore a floaty mink dress with a satin bow at the back.
We had a magician towards the end of the meal which went down a treat and the guests were amazed! Our wedding date fell on the Euro Final so in true patriotic style we had a projector to show the match, this went down better than we could have imagined – even though we lost in the end it really brought everyone together! We also had a DJ and saxophonist to dance the night away. 37
I was so relaxed on the day, myself and the bridal party were ready early so we had lots of time to sit and laugh before the day got underway! Kieg was nervous, but as soon as he saw me, he was fine.
We haven’t been on our proper honeymoon yet. We had to postpone due to Covid but we’re jetting off to Sri Lanka and The Maldives in March. We did manage to nip to Ibiza for a minimoon which was absolutely amazing!
For me, my grandad walking me down the aisle was amazing. He has always been a father figure to me and is not only my grandad but my best friend too. Seeing all our family and friends back together again after so long was absolutely amazing.
Bex’s top tip: “On the day, whatever will be will be! If you’ve forgotten something there’s not a lot you can do and I guarantee you won’t even realise on the day!”

bold and fun wedding photography I’m a fun and bold Yorkshire wedding photographer. I live in Harrogate, a quiet town in North Yorkshire and I can’t get enough of the Yorkshire Biscuit Brew tea. I’m into outdoorsy stuff, climbing, snowboarding, yoga and paddle boarding on a lake. I talk a lot and get excited at anything that involves trying new things and meeting new people. My couples describe me as a natural and fun person who makes them surprisingly relaxed and brings out elements of their personality they have never seen on pictures. I give back the feeling of the day with all its emotions.

his stunning shoot was photographed in a private garden, abundant with colour. The dresses are bold and bright – a perfect choice for a summer wedding. The floral headdresses beautifully put together by Willow & Bear pay homage to the late Frida Kahlo and her striking look that has inspired generations. Clare Coleman the photographer from the shoot describes her inspiration: “As an ex event manager, specialising in event décor and floral installation, I’m always inspired by flowers, their tones, form and movement. I knew as soon as I saw the bold floral dresses from designer Megan Capaldi-Tallon that the mood of the shoot needed to be a high-summer, high-end look. I worked with make-up artist Sonia Schofield who created bronzed, glowing skin with pops of cherry colours on the lips and cheeks. Vintage prototype earrings from YSL and bold gold pieces from Elisabeth Riveiro sourced by Natalia Willmott completed the look.”

A LETTER TO
Photographed in the Grade II-listed Victorian masterpiece, Thicket Priory, this vintageinspired shoot perfectly captures those private, longing moments before you walk down the aisle
I
“ t’s rare that a Reclamation Design dress makes its way to the UK.” says Clare Coleman. “Having secured the opportunity to photograph such an incredibly beautiful piece made from vintage lace, the shoot concept quickly took shape. Shooting within the luxurious setting of Thicket Priory, we opted for timeless Hollywood make-up by Sonia Schofield who created fresh dewy skin and used a deep bronze eyeshadow for the eyelids.” As the shoot evolves you see the bride’s hair go from pin curls as she adds her finishing touches in the mirror, to loose, tumbling waves, accessorised with a bespoke, vintage-inspired piece from Isabella Josie Millinery. Photographer and stylist Clare continues: “Flowers were carefully designed by Willow & Bear Floral Design with British ingredients and sustainable floristry to echo the timeless luxury feel. The bouquet, made with dried flowers, gave a calm luxurious air and natural boho style to the images. The earrings, provided by Natalia Willmott, added subtle colour and light and echoed the vintage look with the use of brass, druzy, Baroque pearls and cats eye.” The shoot was styled with love notes and silk cushions with beautiful antique ribbons from My Billet Doux which also added to the sumptuous, romantic appeal. 42

Flaming FA L L Shot in Goldsborough Hall, the shoot was inspired by the pre-Raphaelite painting Flaming June, featuring a pomegranate toned two-piece from Miss He Bridal Images courtesy of Boho Chic Weddings

T
he painting Flaming June has long had personal family significance for accessory designer Heidi Reid of Glorious by Heidi. Heidi is the third of first-born girls all born in the month of June in her family: her grandmother June, her mother Linda June, and now herself, Heidi June. Each have all had a copy of the famous artwork hanging in their homes. A conversation about this fact with fellow art lover and wedding photographer Catherine of Boho Chic Weddings, alongside plans to style a shoot to inspire brides choosing to wear a coloured wedding dress, led to the painting providing a focus for the shoot. Heidi and Catherine were keen to use a British dress designer to supply a coloured wedding dress and were delighted to find the very talented Hebe of Miss He Bridal based close to home in the north of England. Heidi tells us more: “Hebe’s bold statement bridal two-piece, with rich pomegranate-toned colour, was a bespoke design created especially for the shoot. It consists of a velvet top with 3/4 length bell sleeves paired with a tiered ruffle skirt that moved beautifully when model Phoebe skipped across the lawns of Goldsborough Hall in the bright, autumn sunshine. Other elements that were extremely important in the styling of the day was planning a colour scheme that would support such bold toned bridal wear but not become so overbearing as to lose the impact of the dress, as well as designing a table setting that whilst small retained an opulence fitting for the grand Goldsborough Hall setting and statement Miss He Bridal wear.” Sticking with the same tonal range, florist and table stylist, Beth of Yorkshire-based Bureau Botany, used blush David Austin roses in the floral accompaniments, warming things up with the considered and restrained use of apricot and burnt orange. Gold cutlery and golden rimmed glassware from Whitehouse Event crockery, coupled with gold foiled stationery from Gray Starling Designs, brought the luxe that the setting required. For the hair, accessory designer Heidi of Glorious by Heidi knew that statement bridalwear requires a statement hair accessory to make sure the eye of your partner and your guests travels all the way up through your look and doesn’t stall midway. Heidi describes the perfect piece: “The Harley Crown from the Glorious by Heidi collection provided that statement, with the richness of the pomegranate bridalwear complemented by the warmth of the metallic gold crystals featured in this design and cooler silver leaves preventing the look from becoming too heavy.” Of the photography Heidi says: “A smaller wedding with fewer guests allows more time for you and your partner to head off with your photographer to capture more experimental, fun, memorable images that reflect your character and the things you love about one another. I was personally overjoyed that photographer Catherine indulged me in recreating the iconic painting Flaming June during our photoshoot. It goes to show that if you have a good relationship with your photographer, sharing family traditions and stories with them before your wedding day can help inspire them to create some truly meaningful and memorable images on your wedding day.”

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
READY, SET, POSE!

Dave and I were unsure if we wanted to book a pre-wedding shoot as we don’t like our picture being taken and can be quite awkward in front of the camera. I spoke to a few of our married friends and they all recommended booking a shoot, so we decided to go for it. As we got engaged during the last lockdown, we had only met our photographer once over Skype, so we felt the shoot would also be a good way of getting to know him better ready for our big day. We’d arranged to meet on a beach in Kent, and as I’m sure you can tell from the pictures, it was extremely blustery and cold, so much so we were convinced we would appear blue
in the final shots! Although it wasn’t the perfect weather conditions, the combination of our windswept appearence – my hair must have looked like Medusa – onlookers and relaxed nature of our photographer made the shoot fun! I was very nervous beforehand, changing my outfit 10 times much to Dave’s annoyance, but once we were there we both felt at ease and had a great time. If you’re debating booking a shoot, I’d highly recommend it.
ACCESSORISE AND SHINE Wedding planning has been pretty straightforward overall, but when it came to choosing my accessories, I felt very overwhelmed. I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly girly, but I wanted something that would make me look beautiful on the day without being overpowering. After hours of shopping, I surprised myself by discovering I have a hidden love for pearls, so when I came across a pearl and floral hair clip, I just knew that I had to have it! I’m planning to finish my look with a pair of pearl earrings and a pendant necklace. My shoes have also been difficult. I’m 5ft 2ins and Dave is more than 6ft tall, so I was debating whether to wear heels to make the height difference less apparent. All the heels that I loved were really expensive and I was beginning to have nightmares about falling over as I walked down the aisle – I’m not the most gracious person even in flats! So, after looking at countless websites and going into what feels like every shoe shop in Essex, I finally decided to embrace my height and purchased a pair of glittery trainers with satin laces from Kate Spade. Although different to what I had orginally envisaged, I think the look suits my dress and it’s made me feel more relaxed knowing I won’t be going to A&E on the big day. Lastly, Dave and I went ring shopping – a traditonal wedding element we still wanted
for our nuptials. When we arrived at the jewellers, which was the same branch that Dave purchased my engagement ring from, I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had a matching wedding ring that I, of course, had to have. Luckily we are months ahead of our wedding, however we were made aware that some ring designs can take up to four months to arrive in the store – take note readers that are planning last-minute ‘I dos’! Dave never wears jewellery, so he was unsure of what style he wanted and all of the different types of metal and cuts were quite overwhelming for him. After doing some research and asking our friends for their opinions, he decided on a plain platinum band that looks great. Make sure you check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the perfect entertainment.

his year has flown by, can you believe it’s nearly Christmas? It’s starting to dawn on me that this is my last as a Miss – eek – and July will creep around quickly so the countdown is officially on! My fiancé, Dave, and I have booked most of our suppliers including the venue, photographer and florist and I’ve even found my dress – but there’s still plenty to do! We’re getting really excited as the day draws closer, and the more I write about all of your beautiful weddings, the more real it seems that we will have our very own wedding day. In this issue, read all about our pre-wedding shoot and my search for the perfect accessories.

BRIDE’S DIARY
We’ve ordered wooden cutouts of our guests’ names to be used as place names. They look really cute and double up as favours.
Originally, we didn’t want light-up letters, but after seeing a set-up at one of our venue’s wedding shows, we loved the look and have hired them.
Dave and I have purchased an oak direction sign that will greet our guests as they enter our venue.
Although I was against the idea of wearing a veil, I tried one on with my dress and fell in love.
We came across a local company that creates personalised cake toppers, so we’ve decided to order one with figures of us and our cat.
Our venue offers guests a choice of ribbons when they enter the venue, pink if they want people to keep their distance, green if they’re comfortable to shake hands and blue if they are happy to hug. I think it’s a great way of making sure that everyone feels happy and safe on the day.
We’re planning to buy personalised cufflinks for Dave and his best man.
I love this buttonhole wrapped in twine and am going to ask our florist if she can do the same.
For our tables, we’re purchased concrete planters that are shaped like characters from our favourite films and tv shows to add a personal touch to the day. 53

How did you find the design process? Did you have a favourite part? I loved working with Laura (Latif, creative director of ROCO) and the team. I’ve always wanted to create my own children’s wear line so to see the pieces evolve from the initial design meeting is so exciting. I immersed myself

LIGHT AND SHADE
A new addition to the Lush range of perfumes, Shade offers a burst of warmth with comforting sandalwood. A fragrance with a conscience, each essential oil has its own story to tell including sandalwood from West Timor, which is extracted from protected and sustainable trees. It’s also made using a new source of olibanum oil from the Dayaxa region in Somaliland. It has full traceability down to the harvester level, with every step of the process being mapped on blockchain. In fact, Lush is working with its supplier to kickstart a project to train local women in small-scale olibanum oil distillation, a first in the community. Find it online at www.lush.com, where it’s priced at £25 for 30ml.
FEEL FLAWLESS
Speak to any wedding make-up artist and they’ll most likely tell you that primer is a must, which is why I wanted to share with you my latest discovery: Super Facialist Skin Perfecting Primer (£17). This little beauty creates a flawless-looking complexion using trusted skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, and colour-correcting pigments. It cleverly blurs imperfections by counteracting the three most common concerns of redness, sallowness and dullness, while simultaneously working to bring back skin’s natural radiance. BACK TO ITS ROOTS
Molton Brown was born in the 1970s as a hair salon based in the heart of London’s shopping district on South Molton Street, which was frequented by the Rolling Stones and many other icons of the day. Creators Caroline Bernstein and her husband would hand mix all formulations in the basement, with conscious care for the environment at the forefront of the brand’s values even then. Now, on the brand’s 50th anniversary it has re-introduced hair care to its range. The collection contains four tailored collections, each with a botanical at the core of its formulation: balancing, volumising, hydrating and repairing. This approach means you can strategically build a healthy-hair routine into your big-day prep depending on the needs of your locks. Check out www.moltonbrown.co.uk

In my humble opinion Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner are nothing short of miraculous! I won’t lie, my hair was in an embarrassing state when I decided to give these a go. I’d been swimming three days on the bounce – down water slides, through rapids, the works! My locks were a huge matted, straw-like mess. But with just one application the shampoo lathered like a dream and after leaving the conditioner in for the recommended three minutes, even wet my hair started to feel less knotty. I usually dread having to drag the brush through my hair after I’ve washed it, but in no time flat it was knot-free, smooth and ready to dry. Shiny, soft and looking their best, the state of my locks pre-Kristin Ess were a distant memory. This is definitely my new favourite hair routine and at £8 each they won’t break the bank. My advice? Head over to www.boots.com and pop them in your basket immediately!
NATURE’S HARVEST
When Estée Lauder created Youth-Dew bath oil in 1953, she revolutionised the fragrance industry and 75 years later, the brand is carrying on her legacy with the introduction of a new luxury fragrance collection. Each of the eight scents is inspired by nature’s most breathtaking moments such as the radiance of a sunset and the mystery of a moonlit flower. What’s more, Estée Lauder’s new ScentCapture Fragrance Extender technology is specially formulated to allow each perfume to last up to 12 hours after a single application – that should get you from vows to dancefloor no problem. The new Luxury Fragrance Collection (£130 100ml, £68 40ml) is available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and at www.esteelauder.co.uk

The Detangling Mist is the newest product in The Hair Boss’ award-winning range. The brand, founded by Lisa Shepherd, former British Hairdresser of the Year, simplifies hair care into a four-step routine, and this newbie fits tidily into part three. With life getting busier by the second, this is the quick, on-the-go answer to dry, unruly hair. Targeted to fix frizzy and damaged locks, it’s designed to smooth and strengthen, while protecting your hair and preventing breakage. Lisa says, “In between washes, The Detangling Mist will soften the hair, taming any unruly knots and re-adding the shine that it’s lost since the last wash.” Priced at £8.99, it’s available at https://thehairboss.co.uk
They say the eyes are the window to the soul, so they’re for sure a feature to make the most of on the big day. For those looking for longer lashes and full brows, The B Collection has launched its Lash & Brow Serum (£8.99). This all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free product nourishes and stimulates growth in these two key areas for eyes that’ll pop as you say “I do.” Use every night before bed following your usual skincare routine and wash off in the morning – super-easy. You can also use it during the day to set your brows in place. We love anything with a dual purpose! Find it at https://thebcollection.co.uk 69
From the INSIDE OUT
We caught up with owner and founder of Simone Thomas Wellness, Simone herself, to discover how taking care of yourself from the inside out is the ultimate path to wedding wellness
T
he impact stress and anxiety can have on our bodies should never be underestimated. So, the pandemic has a lot to answer for, even outside of Covid itself. If you’re finding that months of lockdown and wedding-related stress have taken their toll, you’re certainly not alone. Sadly, anxiety-induced skin concerns and even hair loss can quickly leave you feeling pretty far from your big-day best. Enter award-winning authority on hair health and wellness Simone Thomas, who’s spent her career sharing her expertise in nutrition, hairloss and bio-energetics. Alongside hair salons and hair-loss clinics, which boast an elite global clientele that includes royalty, celebrities and CEOs; she’s also the founder of Simone Thomas Wellness. We asked Simone for her help in guiding you back onto the path of wedding wellness. Based on your experience, what challenges are nearlyweds facing in the aftermath of the pandemic? 2020 had a huge affect on the wedding industry with 64 per cent of big days being cancelled or postponed, which means stress levels for everyone involved are now at an alltime high. A wedding is an important day that couples have invested a lot of time and money in, it’s something they’ve dreamed of. So, this is all having a negative impact on how we feel and how we sleep, with our skin and hair responding to that. A bad hair or skin day isn’t great at any time, let alone when the camera is constantly on you and you want to feel your best. What the last year has taught us though is

WELLNESS INTERVIEW to start working on yourself? You don’t have to go all out, but you might start looking at a nutrition plan, exercising or having hydra facials. However, I fully recognise there may be financial restraints, so this might not always be possible. In which case, I’d say three months is optimal, but the minimum is six weeks in advance. This way there’s time to flush out any nasties and create balance allowing the body to become stronger and progress. Many tell me they start to see a difference within two weeks. how to take a step back and invest in ourselves, as we often don’t listen to what our bodies need. At Simone Thomas Wellness, we’ve seen a huge increase in clients asking for advice on nutrition and bioenergetics, as well as hair loss. There’s also been a rise in skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, dermatitis of the scalp, eczema, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata, which is commonly linked to stress and hormones. In fact, stress has a huge knock on effect on our hormones as women. But men too are experiencing skin complaints and suffering hair loss. So, people preparing for their big days have really been struggling during lockdown. How can we turn this around – where do we start? What I always say is that everything starts in the gut. If you look after that, the body will look after you. I call it The Mothership. Poor gut health is the start of disease and can be linked to degenerative disorders, so it really should be the number one priority if you’re looking to feel the best version of yourself. Everyday Wellness, part of the Simone Thomas Wellness range, is a super-strength probiotic supplement containing six types of probiotics to improve gut health by introducing both good and bad bacteria, vital on a day-today basis. When I say “bad bacteria” people often ask me, why anyone would want that, but the body needs diversity to become stronger. These supplements also help to reduce the inflammation that occurs naturally in a body. Food can be a trigger, as can poor sleep patterns, stress, and the environment. Here, we’re focusing on removing any nasties so they don’t get absorbed into the cells. What advice would you give to those looking to achieve that natural-looking bridal glow without a face full of make-up? Skin Quencher is great for anyone wanting to feel youthful or who’s keen to avoid wearing lots for make-up. It’ll work from the inside out to give you that ultimate bridal glow. I’m also a huge fan of facials, but it’s more about what we put into our body rather than what we put on top of it. You have to work on yourself internally for the outside to glow. Yes, skincare products are going to have an effect, but if the inside isn’t right, it won’t be long term.
Biotin Brilliance too helps with mild skin irritation caused by stress. You may already have heard about biotins, they’re a B vitamin and have been talked about for a number of years as being vital for healthy skin, hair and nails. What can you suggest for brides, and bridesmaids, looking to grow their hair for a wedding? Our Ginkgo Biloba B+ plan contains folic acid with essential B vitamins and biotin, but if you don’t suffer from tiredness, then the biotin haircare plan is great for maintenance. Alternatively, if you have no specific worries about hair loss, but want to feel the best version of yourself, taking no chances with stress, Skin Quencher is great too. These plans are also great for grooms concerned about hair loss. What are the benefits of a haircare plan versus a single supplement? I formulated the plans because I learnt from experience that most people’s concept of what’s healthy actually isn’t. Most of us will happily invest in skincare and clothes, but not in how we feel internally. I think of the plans as a three-step process, much like a garden. To grow beautiful flowers, you need sunlight, amazing soil, and water. So, the probiotics are the ultimate go to, but there’s no point if you’re a fan of microwave meals or Macdonald’s. Unless you cook from scratch, you’re throwing away the goodness you’re putting into the body with the probiotics. Pairing them with Super Greens and Ginkgo Biloba B+ or Biotin Brilliance is then all about preparing the gut, balancing the body and removing toxins, as well as making sure you create the best environment for vitamin and mineral absorption. The most important step though is water: filtered versus tap, glass bottle versus plastic. Purely because of what can be absorbed through plastic as well as unfortunately what’s in mainstream water that comes through the tap.
Tell us a bit about the company’s ethos. Supplements are a big industry, but they’ve often received bad press because the products simply don’t do what they claim to. So, these are all things we’ve addressed across everything we do from the ingredients to manufacturing. We make sure that every process has full certification, including soil association and vegan accreditation. We’ve worked hard to ensure our products are vegan and our marine collagen is protected and sourced ethically. Everything is sustainable as much as possible. When our bottles are finished with they get made into tiles and flooring, and the packaging too is eco-friendly. Even the energy used in my office is renewable. We’re proud of the fact that recently we were responsible for 25 trees being planted in the rainforest due to our renewable energy contract.

When would be the ideal time to start taking supplements in order to feel wedding-ready? To me there’s never a day too early! Most couples will start planning a year to two years in advance, so why not use the same timeline 71

Q&A
THE FINISHING TOUCHES I have no idea how much jewellery to wear on my wedding day. What pieces would you recommend to a bride? When it comes to accessorising as a bride, it very much depends on the theme of your wedding day, as well as the type of dress you’re wearing. For instance, if your dress is traditional and simple you’ll have a lot more scope to jazz things up with necklaces, hoops and bracelets adorned in diamonds or pearls. On the other hand, if your dress is bold and busy, you may feel that simple studs and a bangle work. Additionally, say you’ve opted for a rustic-themed wedding, you’ll want everything to tie in nicely with this aesthetic; opals and leaf-like pieces will work beautifully with a boho-style gown. Or you may decide on traditional, meaning a light lustre of diamonds over drop earrings to complement your up do is the ideal option. No matter your wedding plans, you’ll want your accessories to complement your theming and overall appearance. That’s our top tip.

BE YOU! I’m not getting married till 2023, how can I be sure my dress will stay on-trend? Finding your perfect dress for your big day is the most exciting time for you as the bride, knowing that in one of the bridal boutiques you choose to visit, you may say ‘Yes’ to that very special dress! It’s not just about being ontrend though, you want that dress to represent you in every way possible and sometimes being on-trend isn’t so important. It’s about how you feel in a dress, and whether the style, colour, fabric and design of the garment, makes you want to walk down the aisle. My focus is on helping you find the dress that makes you feel beautiful and confident, but most importantly, you! Kerensa Dyson www.bijoubridalboutique.co.uk 73

A TOUCH OF MAGIC

Your wedding is set to be a magical day, so what better way would there be to entertain your guests than with a magician. Matt of Matthew J Magic performs in a contemporary style with a classic northern wit to build the atmosphere of your day and set the tone for a fun and memorable experience. The best time for Matt to do his thing is between the service and wedding breakfast when guests are coming and going for group photos etc. He circulates between small groups, drawing people together who may not know each other too well and leaves them with a common experience they can bond over. You’ll hear pockets of people laughing, clapping and gasping in amazement creating that all important buzz in the air. Matt says, “I love performing at the drinks reception as I feel like a kind of warm up act for the speeches, getting people clapping, laughing and joining in ready for the groom, best man and father-of-the-bride’s big moments.” An hour or so at the start of the evening reception also works well to get the party started with new guests arriving. Matthew J Magic | www.matthewjmagic.co.uk
LET THE MUSIC PLAY
Rock My Reception provide wedding entertainment throughout your full wedding day. From playing your choice of songs live during the ceremony, to acoustic music during your drinks reception, from that all-important live first dance to evening music and DJ service to get the party started, there’s something for everyone – there’s even options of a late afternoon ukulele set! Rock my Reception | www.rockmyreception.co.uk
TOP TIP!
Think of the flow of your wedding day, there will be times when guests are left to mingle and interact with each other whilst you are having your photos taken during drinks receptions and the cocktail hour. Consider hiring a form of entertainment during those time periods such as a musician, magicians, giant lawn games or a glitter station. These will be a good ice-breaker and talking point and will make your guests feel relaxed. SB Events | www.sbeventsplanning.com

Our local experts solve your wedding dilemmas
LIGHTEN UP It’s my dream to have fireworks at my wedding but I’m getting married in a very rural location around a lot of farmland and I really don’t want to upset the locals. What can I do? Don’t worry! We’ve worked with many couples and venues in the past to establish a display appropriate to their surroundings. As every display is designed individually, we can work with you to find a suitable noise level for the display, providing example videos of previous shows so you can see exactly what to expect. We have lots of experience in low noise displays, including pyro-musicals, making sure they still have that wow factor for you and your guests, just without the loud bangs if you wish. We’re also more than happy to liaise with concerned venues, farmers or other residents, giving them examples of what to expect from your display and answering any questions they may have. We can also advise on notifying the neighbouring area, as often a simple advanced notice helps greatly when planning a firework display. These are all elements that when put together can ensure you can still have the wow factor display of your dreams, without the upset! Rebecca Cooper | Optimum Fireworks www.optimum-fireworks.co.uk 78
STEP BY STEP I’d love to learn a dance routine for our first dance. My husband is confident but has two left feet! What type of dance would you recommend for beginners? One of the first things I tell couples at their initial lesson is that nearly every single couple we teach has either zero or very little previous dance experience. For some it can be quite daunting the idea of having dancing lessons let alone performing in front of their guests and I think by reassuring them that everyone is in the same boat helps to put them at ease before they start. Dance teachers will take this into consideration when couples approach them for wedding lessons and so the movements will be chosen to reflect this and the amount of time the couple wish to invest in lessons. For some, this might be as little as one hour and for others, that want a more intricate or wow-factor performance, that could be five hours or more. Rather than focusing too much on the style of the dance and wondering if a song is appropriate to dance to, I’d suggest for couples to instead go with their gut instinct and focus on their song choice. It will be forever their first dance song so they need to be sure they both like it! Their dance teacher can then pick an appropriate dance style and tailor the steps to their choice and requirements. Katie Geddes | The Dance Studio, Leeds www.thedancestudioleeds.com
A TAILOR-MADE CEREMONY We aren’t getting married in a church and need a formal ceremony but don’t know where to begin. I really want my ceremony to reflect us as a couple. Please help! Three words: find a celebrant. Religious couples should find their local religious leader and get married in their nearest religious buildings. That’s fairly clear. Nonreligious couples have two choices: a short, unoriginal registry office ceremony led by someone who has three or four other weddings to officiate that day; or, an original, personalised ceremony led by someone whose sole job is to make your big day as good as it possibly can be. If you want your ceremony to reflect you as a couple, then you can’t go wrong with a celebrant. Celebrants will meet you months (even years!) in advance of your ceremony and get to know you as a couple, and as a result, craft a meaningful ceremony that truly reflects you both. This will involve telling the story of you as a couple (as much as you’re willing to share with parents and grandparents, of course!), as well as helping you to write your vows, and even including special ceremony elements such as a hand-fasting, a unity sand ceremony, or even live vocals to sing you down the aisle. One drawback is that celebrants can’t legally marry you at this time, but this has plenty of benefits too – not least that, as a result of not having legal constrictions, you can have your ceremony literally anywhere you want. Clifftop? – Sure. Ski slope? – Why not? In your back garden? – You do you! Mark Gregory | Mark Your Occasion https://markyouroccasion.com

My husband and I are very environmentally aware and try to make healthy and eco-conscious choices in all areas of our lifestyle. We’re getting married and I want my values to be reflected in my choice of dress. Where do I begin? I think it’s very important to have your values reflected in your wedding dress. I’d recommend writing down all the points that are most important to you and go from there. As a lot of dresses on the market are made from polyester and still made in China it’s very important to do your research on the brand of your dress. I’d suggest looking for a sustainable designer who is open to sharing information on where their gowns are made and what they’re made from. Here at Luna Bride, we adore chatting to brides to be interested in the ethics of their dress as this is what’s so important to us as an ethical brand. Some factors that make a dress ethical and eco-friendly in my opinion are: to have the dress made locally to you or in the same country; to have the dress made in cruelty-free materials that are also good for the planet; also, it’s important that the people who made your dress are treated fairly. I think having an ethical dress gives your gown more of a story and something to be really proud of when you look back on your wedding day. Keely Brightmore | Luna Bride https://lunabride.com

SUSTAINABLE DESIGNS
AND BREATHE… I’m feeling so anxious in the run up to the wedding. I really want to enjoy the next few months and of course the big day. Do you have any tips to help? Nerves, anxiety and excitement: these are all emotions our couples feel before they walk down the aisle. It’s the time when things start to feel very real, and all eyes will be on you. Here’s some useful ideas to prevent some of those nerves and how you can achieve a more relaxed and calmer atmosphere. Breathe - Focus on taking deep breaths when you feel those tingly butterflies creeping in. Deep breathing helps blood flow to the brain and nervous system and slows your heart rate and relaxes you. Perspective - If something small goes wrong, for example the weather isn’t playing ball or your cousin has just become a vegan, keep it in perspective, it’s not the most important part of the day. Unfortunately, we can’t control everything. The most important thing of all is that you’ve married the love of your life. Delegate - If you’re not hiring a wedding planner to oversee the coordination of your wedding day, entrust a friend or family member with being the ‘point of contact’ for the photographer, florist, catering team, band/DJ etc, otherwise you’ll be answering questions all day when all you should be doing is relaxing and enjoying your special day. Get covered - This we highly recommend. Wedding insurance is there to cover any aspect of your wedding that doesn’t fall to plan. This may be: wedding dress or suit hire damage, loss of an engagement ring or if your wedding venue goes into liquidation or damage. Cover starts from as little as £30 and with the average cost of a wedding of
£25,000 it’s an investment worth having. Be organised - Set up a new email account to use when planning your wedding. You can use this to contact suppliers and allow guests to RSVP to your wedding. It keeps everything in one inbox which will save you time trawling through endless emails on your other accounts. Stephanie Baragwanath | SB Events www.sbeventsplanning.com 79

Island hopping
Not only will honeymooners looking for a short-haul destination be encapsulated with the historical culture of Athens, but Greece is ideal for those in need of some R&R post-vows too. Whether you’re after quiet reflection in a small deluxe hotel before another hop for cultural immersion, or perhaps you want to learn a new skill like sailing or scuba diving, Olympic Holidays’ bespoke island-hopping itineraries offer something for everyone. With tailor-made itineraries offering accommodation across a range of price points, including hotel and interisland transfers, its knowledgeable team are on hand to recommend the best destinations and create bespoke cultural trips, holidays and gourmet getaways. Destinations include the Saronic Islands (Poros, Spetses and Aegina), Dodecanese (Rhodes, Halki, Kalymnos, Leros, Tilos, Symi and Kos), which are delightfully different and easily connected by ferries and catamarans. Cyclades (Santorini, Naxos, Andros, Paros, Tinos and Mykonos) where each island has its own strong identity, so island hopping brings with it new customs, significantly different landscapes and everything for peaceful days to lively nights. The Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos) with their fantastic beaches, crystal clear sea and lush green forests, and Ionian (Corfu, Paxos, Ithaka, Kefalonia & Zante), home to caves and lakes, ancient ruins and windsurfing hotspots plus five-star hotels with Michelin-star cuisine. Crete can also be combined with both the Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands. ITINERARY INSPIRATION A romantic lustre adds sparkle to the marvellous Sporades Islands.
Legend has it that one island was created by the love child of gods. Now two islands are the focus of one of the 21st-century’s most successful romantic movies, Mamma Mia. Skiathos: Just 12-miles long but with more than 60 beaches, gorgeous Skiathos Town has shady tavernas on a busy waterfront. The narrow streets of the bustling old town are crammed with shops, cafes and bars. You can climb Medieval castles, stroll through forests, discover quiet sandy beaches and even take a rescued dog for a walk. Skopelos: Next stop, scenic Skopelos. Look out for dolphins before you sail into a harbour that is backed by a hillside covered in white houses with terracotta roofs. Tree-filled Skopelos has forests, and orchards and several beaches can be reached easily by bus or hired vehicles and many more beaches are waiting to be found in bays and coves. Alonissos: A gem for those wanting to get away from it all. You feel the sense of calm as you sail into elegant Patitiri, the small town and main port. Some beaches have bright white pebbles or sand creating a vivid contrast with the turquoise sea. Many are surrounded by pine forests that cover much of the island. Alonissos is in Europe’s largest marine park which protects monk seals and dolphins. It has a rescue centre for baby seals ‒ try to fit in a boat trip around the park! MORE ABOUT OLYMPIC HOLIDAYS...
