THE VANNS SOUTH COAST FAVOURITES, THE VANNS, HAVE MADE THEIR RETURN WITH CHARGED UP NEW SINGLE ‘RED LIGHT’. THE SINGLE, THE BAND’S NEWEST MUSIC SINCE THE RELEASE OF THEIR ACCLAIMED DEBUT ALBUM THROUGH THE WALLS IN 2019, IS THE VANNS’ STRONGEST. They’ve re-emerged from the shadows of 2020 ready and raring to go; ‘Red Light’ is the perfect green light moment for the band’s new chapter. Released ahead of their first Australian tour in twelve months, the single is drenched in catchy melodies, vocals and rhythms. In short, ‘Red Light is tailor made for The VANNS’ live experience. Recorded in Byron Bay with Chris Collins, the band nailed the song in the bag after a few days across multiple sessions. The band’s dynamic has only become stronger as they’ve managed to navigate 2020 together as creatives. It’s the type of song that can act as a gateway for new fans of The VANNS, while serving as a tight reminder for those who have been there from the beginning: The VANNS are building a legacy to be proud of. “We recorded ‘Red Light’ in an insanely nice studio just outside of Byron Bay called ‘The Music Farm.’ We were there for a few days and recorded a couple of tunes with all round legend Chris Collins. The process was pretty stressfree, and we recorded live with all of us in the same room which I’d like to think

translates on the recording. Helluva time,” says Cameron Little. The single revolves around an individual who is battling their own demons, speaks to a wider feeling of losing control and spiralling out of it. “I view the single as a ‘lack-of-control’ state of being. Not everything is as it may seem, jumping to reactions may cause more harm than good. For myself, this single involves and shows a move towards a sound that is influenced a lot more on groove and feel,” says Andrew Banovich. For the music video, The VANNS headed to Broken Hill with director Todd Hardingham. The cinematic feel of the video comes with ease, with shots of the band performing in the remote landscapes, the sunset adding to the vast, striking nature of the clip. “It was hot, we are running in RM William boots, not the best combo but damn we had a ball. Our videographer, Todd, tried to capture as much red outback dirt as possible. We had no real plan, we were more in it for the journey,” explains Jimmy Vann. ‘Red Light’ is out now. •

INKLINES A BRAND NEW YEAR OF MUSIC FOR SYDNEY’S INKLINES HAS KICKED OFF STRONG ALREADY WITH THE RELEASE OF ‘BLOSSOM’ BACK IN FEBRUARY. AND NOW, THE TRIO RETURNS, BACKING IT UP WITH ANOTHER STRONG DOSE OF INDIE ROCK IN ‘ALL GONE’. As an indicator of the band’s new EP, coming out later this year, ‘All Gone’ is Inklines at their finest. The first song written as part of new sessions laid down with producer Lachlan West, ‘All Gone’ is rich in its guitar and melodic arrangements. The band has always thrived within the alt-rock space and here, we can hear those influences fusing easily with more contemporary notes. “‘All Gone’ fell together pretty quickly in the studio as we had been gigging for a few months beforehand, and we were all ready to get back into the writing process. It definitely helped that this track is on the mellow side of things, as it really allowed us to let the song flow and take its own course,” says the band. Since their formation back in 2017, Inklines have become seasoned performers on stages around the country performing alongside the likes of British India, elevating as headliners in the years that would follow. With two EPs to their name already, Inklines’ vision squarely remains on pushing their sound forward and exploring more musical influences as they step into new personal and creative chapters. Hailing from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the band is part of a wave of Australian musicians who can’t be beaten right now. •

The single is all about the mundane day-to-day life of being stuck inside alone and going a bit stir crazy. We think a lot of people will be able to relate to this one after the past year.” With 2.1 million monthly listeners and over 250+ million streams on Spotify, as well as over 100 million views and 300k subscribers on YouTube, Hollow Coves’ success internationally speaks for itself.

HOLLOW COVES WITH THEIR AUSTRALIAN TOUR DATES SELLING OUT FAST, HOLLOW COVES HAVE COME THROUGH WITH BRAND NEW MUSIC FOR FANS TO GET AROUND. With the release of their new single, ‘Hello’, the single follows on from their track ‘Lonely Nights’ released earlier this year. Captivating and heavy on the evocation, the band’s duo, Matt and Ryan, flex their best songwriting muscles when they’re utterly in tune with one another. Written at their home on the Gold Coast as everyone found themselves plunged into lockdown, ‘Hello’ speaks to their experiences of being isolated from their normal day to day. “We ended up recording and selfproducing the single at our home studio.

Their early success in the U.S. market is largely thanks to their song ‘The Woods’ featuring on CBS drama Scorpion. It rocketed to the top of The Hollywood Reporter’s Top TV Songs chart, generated momentum for Hollow Coves. Hollow Coves have enjoyed sold out tours through North America and Europe as headliners and have supported Jeremy Loops, Tom Walker, Radical Face and Walking on Cars; courting the attention of BBC Radio, Radio X and more. They have also maintained a solid presence at international festivals like Reeperbahn, The Great Escape, Boardmasters, NYE On The Hill, and Pukkelpop. Band members Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson have won over fans right around the world with their rich and warm songwriting. Consistently building an enviable reputation as artists across a number of striking releases including to EPs and their debut album Moments in 2019, Hollow Coves is one of Australian music’s true gems. ‘Hello’ is out now. •

COAST & OCEAN

COAST AND OCEAN IS ALEX JOHNSON. GROWING UP ON THE SOUTH COAST OF NSW, HIS SONIC STYLE OF R&B, SURF HIP-HOP AND SOUL HAS CERTAINLY BEEN INFLUENCED BY THE OCEAN. TODAY SEES THE RELEASE OF HIS LATEST SINGLE ‘LOST’. “I wanted to give a new positive meaning to being lost and what it means to discover yourself… off the back of a global pandemic where people have experienced being lost by other means – lost in fear, hurt, pain and sadness. The timing could not be any more perfect, which is a beacon of light to send a positive message to people all around the world that they too can get lost in a world of love, happiness, health, joy and abundance,”says Alex. Coast & Ocean encompasses a whole range of emotion with his music. Alex writes songs with an entire range of dynamics. “‘Lost’ came to me after a 6am meditation in my hometown. After picking up my guitar I found myself lost. That night I performed the single at Sydney’s Slyfox’s Enmore Freestyle night. There I met Minimal Miggy, who was keen to produce me after hearing the song. Two years later, with a third European Tour under my belt, ‘Lost’ was recorded from a home studio in Byron Bay,” said Alex. Growth is a common theme throughout Alex’s music, expressing how important it is to grow, seek adventure and change in positive ways. Having toured across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and South East Asia, Alex has supported with the likes of Lime Cordiale, Hot Potato Band, Lyall Moloney, Ty Dolla $ign, Peach Furr and Dylan Joel. ‘Lost’ is out now. •

These days you literally cannot go half a block in Brookvale without coming across a local vendor, brewing or baking up an innovation. Amongst this, artists, filmmakers and musicians front up for morning coffee alongside mechanics, fabricators, engineers and arborists. It may seem impossible to acknowledge the manifold talents that make up the Brookvale landscape but Brookvale Arts District (BAD), in essence, does just that. BAD is a rapidly growing coalition of individuals, companies and institutions who’ve come together to make sure the suburb’s key creative and industrial fabric is successfully integrated with future development of the area. So the Brookvale community, which has been celebrating its secret culture for many years, now has a unifying voice and vision. BAD is represented by three of its founding members, and local business owners, John Meredith from The Plant

Room, Lara Allport from The National Grid and Miguel Gonzales from La Crème Creative. “The folk from BAD live, love and breathe Brookvale which means we’re intimate with its rich heritage and extraordinary assets, and we truly understand its potential as a striking example of integrated regenerative urbanisation,” says John, who is the inaugural President of Brookvale Arts District Inc. “We see Brookvale becoming a remarkable and globally relevant campus of diverse activities: lightindustrial, commercial, residential, recreational and creative,” adds Lara. The BAD organisation is currently working, in concert, with urban planners, designers, architects and property investment funds to ensure BAD can play an active role in contributing to ongoing development of the Brookvale Structural Plan.

BAD has also been working closely with James Griffin, MP who recently facilitated very successful meetings between BAD, DNSW and Create NSW. “James is an incredible advocate of the Brookvale Arts District initiative and with his support we expect you’ll be seeing some very cool and rather tasty events coming to Brookvale in the near future,” declares Miguel.

MAKING BROOKVALE B.A.D. AGAIN.

BAD has also been in discussions with Zali Steggall as well as Michael Regan and Northern Beaches Council, all great supporters of the initiative. Brookvale is a crucible of inventive creativity and BAD aims to share this with the greater Sydney community, indeed, the world. •

A CATCH UP WITH

Jason

Falinski WITH THE YEAR THAT HAS BEEN AND THE VACCINE ROLL OUT IN FULL SWING, THE BEACHES COVERED. TEAM CAUGHT UP WITH JASON FALINSKI, MP MEMBER FOR MACKELLAR FOR A CANDID CHAT ON ALL THINGS POLICY AND COVID ACROSS THE BEACHES.

Social

G’day Jason, can you give us a wrap on the state-of-play post COVID across the Beaches? We are incredibly well placed. Australia has done better than other nations in both health and economic, and succeeded where others have failed. The big question moving forward is how we seize the opportunities that COVID have presented us with, to set the country up right now and into the future. What are the three priorities for the Mackellar Electorate and team Jason Falinski? I focus on the things that I can control and being in Canberra, arguing for the things that matter to my constituents. They are the primary concerns for people who are working for a living, who are wanting to give their children better opportunities. They also want to get home from work faster so they can enjoy the best part of the best country in the world.

Colour Me

What’s your personal opinion on the change of the micro economy within the Beaches? Australians spend $68 billion overseas every year, whereas the inbound tourism spend is $43 billion. That’s a $25 billion difference and the Beaches area can definitely seize this opportunity for people coming to the area, within Australia, who might otherwise be spending overseas. COVID has shown us that there are things that we have been doing for a long period of time that we actually don’t need to. For example, the number of people that fly to Melbourne or Brisbane for a 2-hour meeting to catch up with someone that just had to be done in person - we actually now realise can be done on a Zoom video call or another online platform. One of the major problems that Australians have always had is not the lack of ideas – it’s been our inability to commercialise those ideas. Major changes around the budget, in terms of the employment share scheme, the way these schemes are taxed and the patent box are a massive step in the right direction – and what that does for the start-up ecosystems will have a huge effect for the Beaches.

Jason, can you please explain the patent box? One of the problems we have with innovation in Australia is we use the tax system. For example, say I’m going to spend $100,000 on Research and Development (R&D), I can get $150,000 back in a R&D grant, $50,000 of that is direct cash payment. The problem with that is it incentivises behaviours without necessarily an end. Why patent box is such a game changer is it basically says when you’re doing R&D, I’m now incentivised to make sure that that R&D is original, different, patentable and can make money from it. You will only pay 17% tax on profits produced instead of the current 30% company tax. What has always happened in Australia is we pay for the R&D to be done in this country, then people commercialise this overseas. Australia pays for all the hard work upfront and the countries overseas get all the credit and profit. What this does is it realigns incentives, ensures the hard work that is done here stays here and more importantly, it encourages people to look at new ideas they can patent. The other issue is the employee share scheme. These are the changes we’ve made to drive productivity and innovation. When you leave the employer, you only have to pay the cost

Politics with Mark Smith

THE PUBLIC USED TO WATCH THE TREASURER DELIVER THE BUDGET TO BASICALLY SEE HOW THE COUNTRY WAS GOING, AND HOW MUCH MORE A BEER WOULD COST FROM THE PUB. NOW IT’S ALL ABOUT, “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?”

The other big thing is that it incentivises people and companies to issue shares to employees. As we know from study after study, if a large section of your workforce has skin in the game, they know that their work matters, driving value in the organisation and creating wealth for everyone. Borders and vaccinations... What’s your opinion on when the borders should be opened as a percentage of people getting vaccinated? People are going from beginning to the end straight away; there are a lot of steps in between. Our aim is to try and get this done very quickly. But we don’t want to get ahead of public opinion. We should have a position where we’re saying to people if you’ve been fully vaccinated, you can leave the country without having to apply, you can come back and isolate yourself in your own homes. And that will encourage people to get vaccinated and to do what they need to do. On the Beaches, medical practises are saying to me they don’t have a problem with getting the supply, they have a problem with getting the demand. People say, “Oh I don’t really need to,” “Zero community transmission,” “Borders are not going to open until middle of next year,”or “I’m busy.” Last question, any family holidays in the Falinski household in the COVID Environment? We’re not big travellers as it is. My parents-in-law are from Port Macquarie so we go there quite often.

I’m not surprised. This has now been going on for a while. Does anyone ever consider the greater good anymore? When did it change? I’ve tried to find the exact date that it shifted from a welfare safety net to ‘entitlement’. Most people I saw interviewed after the budget were only interested in what they were getting out of it. With personal borrowing in this country at a ridiculous level, I’m not shocked the government is following suit. I am taken aback, however, that it’s a coalition government. Where is the concern for ‘debt and deficit?’ We are simply living a lifestyle in this country that we cannot afford. It probably won’t affect me in my lifetime, but what about future generations? Is there any consideration at all? Their standard of living will fall dramatically when all this largesse must be repaid.

Social

of the employee shares if you dispose of them, which you might do to fund a new business start-up. If you keep the shares, then that’s ok - you don’t have to pay tax until you sell them or within 13 years.

Again, who cares? When interest rates inevitably rise and governments can no longer afford to repay or just service the massive debt, estimated to be $1 trillion, public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals etc will suffer. Will future generations look back and say that pandemic spending was understandable, but even more spending, after the worst was behind us was justifiable? I’m glad that we live in a country with a good healthcare system, and an ability to fund an important scheme like the NDIS. I’m also proud of this country that, so far has handled the pandemic well. However, the lack of effort creeping in with vaccine hesitancy and a flat-out refusal by some to adhere to QR code check in and other restrictions begins to reinforce my argument that the greater good is no longer at the top of people’s priority list. Politically of course, this is a budget to try to win votes. It now looks more likely that the Prime Minister will call an early election, which isn’t due until the middle of next year.

That’s a nice part of the world. Thanks Jason. •

All incumbent governments around the country have been rewarded by constituents for ‘keeping them safe’, and I expect Scott Morrison will also try to cash in on this sentiment.

The real question is though, is this government just too reactionary, with no real ideas of their own? •

PROJECT

DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A COLONY OF LITTLE PENGUINS THAT CALL MANLY HOME? THESE FASCINATING ANIMALS ARE IN DANGER AND NEED OUR PROTECTION. BEACHES COVERED. SPOKE TO 9-YEAR-OLD LOCAL, RUBY VICKERY FROM BROOKVALE PUBLIC SCHOOL TO DISCOVER MORE.

Hi, I’m Ruby Vickery and I attend Brookvale Public Primary School. We were lucky to be chosen to participate in Project Penguin 2021. In this program, 670 students from six schools across the Manly area were split into groups to create unique and mind-blowing ideas that would save the Little Penguin colony in Manly. We all set out on a mission to come up with solutions to the problems that the Penguins faced. Our objectives were to find solutions that were not too expensive to help the Penguins and to draw community awareness to help out our Little Penguins in Manly, wherever we could.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS

Social

On our first Little Penguin adventure, we travelled on an excursion to Little Manly and met a very nice lady called Natalie. She was a penguin warden. “ If you’re asking yourself ‘What’s a penguin warden?’, they are people who live in this area and spend their time looking after our beautiful penguins.

They stand out in the freezing cold and make sure no foxes, dogs and cats are in the area. What a good deed they are doing! Back at our school, older mentors from surrounding schools came along and helped us with our projects. There were five students from my class in my group and we also had a mentor who was in Year 9. Together, we created a prototype for a Little Penguin alarm bell collar system to pre-warn the Little Penguins of any danger. Our idea was that these bells would be put onto dogs and cat collars. They then make a sound that the dogs and cats don’t like when they approach a Penguin colony’s beach burrow perimeter. The dogs and cats would run away and the Penguins who are sensitive to sound can hide in their little burrows. We would make these collars camouflaged and with a GPS microchip built into them to keep track of the dog or cat so you know where they have been and at what time. If this solution really got made, we hope the collars would be sponsored so that they could be given out for free to people that live near Little Manly.

PROTECTING THE PENGUINS Some people may wonder, why do we need to protect these Little Penguins anyway? “Just don’t worry about them, they’ll be fine.” Sadly the truth is, if we don’t help out, Sydney’s Little Penguins will become

Penguin extinct. This is mostly through dog and cat attacks killing for fun. However, another big threat are foxes, which were introduced from England. Foxes kill Little Penguins for food. Our second excursion was to the Taronga Zoo. Here we met expert Penguin Keepers who told us about breeding and caring for Little Penguins. We even went in the underground pool room and saw them swimming all around us. Oh, I forgot to tell you about Billy the one-legged penguin. If you’re wondering how that happened, Billy used to be one of the penguins who lived in Manly. One day he got tangled in a fishing line. It was so tight around his leg that it was cutting off his blood circulation. A person who saw Billy’s plight and wanted to help called Taronga Zoo to help Billy. Unfortunately, the Zoo’s veterinarians decided that his leg had to be cut off. Ouch, all because a fisherman left his fishing line for Billy to get tangled in. Our Little Penguins in Manly need saving and it’s up to us to protect them. Please listen to all the information to help protect the Little Penguins from looking out for the surrounding threats. That would be great! • Take care,

“I’m super optimistic about the future of our area post COVID. There’s a lot of activity happening and we aren’t letting up. I recently clocked up 4 years in the job. I’m fired up and still delivering as much as I possibly can for the people of our area.” JAMES GRIFFIN MP

ONE THING IS FOR SURE, MANLY AS A TOURIST AND BACKPACKING MECCA HAS HAD TO HAVE A SUBSTANTIAL SHIFT IN METHODOLOGY TO COME TO TERMS WITH THE POST COVID WORLD. BEACHES COVERED. SAT DOWN WITH JAMES GRIFFIN STATE MP FOR MANLY TO DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES AND ACTION PLANS THAT ARE BEING PUT INTO PLACE.

of COVID has been hard at work. There’s a massive pipeline of never seen before events in Manly. Aqua Rugby is coming in the first week of November. Tickets are on sale now. The North Head Concert Series tickets will be launched soon. And of course, the launch of B.A.D (Brookvale Arts District) is not far off to rejuvenate Brookvale. Not to mention construction having started on Australia’s first Hospice for young adults on the old Manly Hospital site.

Good Morning James, Manly has taken a huge hit in terms of people being around. All the businesses that were formally supported by these tourists and backpackers are really hurting or simply vanished. What is the game plan moving forward in your view? I’m determined to ensure we extract some good from the terrible impact of COVID. COVID has reinforced how fragile our local economy is. It’s true, Manly has been the seaside playground for so long now and whole parts of Manly businesses are built around the 2.5 million or so tourists and backpackers that call Manly home. The challenge has been, these times are simply gone, the world has changed and moved on. It will come back in some regard, but when and at what level is anyone’s guess. I think the challenge is how Manly and the southern part of the Beaches become more than a place to hang out for leisure pursuits. We need to drive the competitiveness of innovation and have the Manly Village in particular turn into a business and activities hub.

There are a lot of ‘For Lease’ signs up all over Manly. At what point do you think landlords will take a reality bite and come to terms that businesses simply can’t afford the high rents they were formally commanding? The opportunity we have in front of us is significant. People simply aren’t aware that for the past decade, tourists visiting Manly have spent around 40% less in Manly than when they visited other areas of Sydney. For all the talk about retaining the Freshwater Ferries (we are keeping two), the facts are that Manly has been performing poorly as a tourism destination. That means we need to change the value proposition of Manly for visitors and also our brand. Brand Manly should reflect the modern Manly and that includes new retailers and venues. I do fear the gap between rental returns for landlords and the reality of the market. However, we have an opportunity to work collectively to ensure the next chapter of our local economy is more resilient than it has ever been.

What are some of the activities you have in the pipeline? The Manly Tourism Taskforce that I formed to help us navigate our way out

What’s your thoughts on the emergence of Brookvale as a contender to Manly as a preferred drinking/ dining nightspot? Brookvale is absolutely going nuts

and that’s a good thing for Manly. In fact, it’s a good thing for the entire Northern Beaches. It’s time to embrace a 24 hour economy that creates jobs, fosters arts, culture, live performance, and Brookvale is the place to do it. I’ve been working closely with the team at B.A.D (Brookvale Arts District) and there’s a lot of excitement building on a whole variety of initiatives. If there is another Major COVID outbreak in NSW, would you consider engaging the Q Station at North Head to be used as it had for 150 years as a suitable quarantine station? I hope we don’t have to encounter that situation. However, I think the Q Station are doing amazingly with their tourism bookings. In my view, the Commonwealth Government should be exploring the creation of standalone largescale purpose built quarantine facilities that would allow our hotels to get back to business as usual. The more we get vaccinated, the quicker we can open our borders.

MANLY  FORCED TO CHANGE, ECONOMICALLY AND SOCIALLY.

Last question, were any family holidays in the Griffin household taken in the COVID environment? Well, it was my Auntie’s 80th birthday recently and she lives in Noosa so we got up there for a few days. I even went for a surf. It was the first time I’d been on a plane in a long time. That’s probably just as much due to having a 2.5 year old and an 11 month old as it has to do with COVID. But hey, we live in a holiday destination right! Thanks James for your insights. We hope you enjoy Beaches COVERED.’s Winter Harmony issue. •

With a long list of accolades, including family-friendly and rotating work hours, a $700,000 company vehicle, five weeks of holidays every year plus other perks, what’s not to love? One bus driver, Liz, used to work in account management and sales in IT. After facing two redundancies in three years, she started looking for something a little more stable. “I’m doing a Bachelor of Business (now) and because I work broken shifts, I get a number of hours in the middle of the day to study and keep on top of course work,” she says. “None of my friends have heavy vehicle licenses so I’m pretty happy I’ve been able to do something others haven’t.” During the pandemic, State Transit maintained everyone’s employment and not one person was displaced. They even continued to hire new bus operators proving it’s a very secure profession. Training to be a bus driver is an intensive and extremely rewarding experience and no previous experience is required. Drivers are paid while being trained, and get a nationally-recognised qualification while you work. “Drivers get continual training and most are signed up to a traineeship,”

says Will Treglown, from People and Culture, State Transit. “The initial induction / onboarding period is three months - the first week is classroom based, the second is licence upgrade and practical heavy vehicle driver training, and the third is in-service training with customers on the bus.” “Drivers are then off by themselves with fortnightly sessions with Trainers. After this period, general traineeship training is provided to obtain a qualification.”

This job has helped me do that.” With competitive pay and good perks, including free travel, being a bus driver is not only rewarding work but it also supports a balanced lifestyle. “It’s a great environment to work in, with rotating shifts with various start times,” says William. “Lifestyle shifts with (off peak) middle of the day, off duty to surf, exercise, or fish. There are gyms at most depots and driving on the Northern Beaches is great fun - you can drive family members to where they need to get to.”

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT “This work has given me my work and my social life,” says Andrew, who has been a bus driver for 26 years. “I’m the secretary of the social club. I love doing things, making people happy and talking to people,” he laughs, in a video by the State Transit Authority called Meet Bus Driver Andrew. “We do BBQs twice a week, there’s table tennis, snooker, sports days…,” he adds. “The hours are great and the money is good. I bought a Harley Davidson. I went to Cairns. Found a beautiful block of land

As a driver with STA, employees can work close to home, with like-minded people, and open themselves up to great opportunities. Johno has been a bus driver for three weeks and is already looking forward to the future. “There are a lot more opportunities in State Transit,” he says. “I know plenty of people that used to be bus operators that are now doing training, and some have gone on to become Depot Managers so there’s plenty of room to grow.” •

COMMUNITY FOOTBALL

NARRABEEN FC Peter, you are one of the main driving forces behind the resurgence of the Narrabeen Football Club. What’s the club doing as a community venture for local kids? We are bringing back a local vibe for our community, helping local kids. We now have our own internal program, with our own coaches, teaching the Narrabeen way. Our football program is purely funded by the business sponsors of the club with our main focus to get kids playing the sport and shining in the football arena. What’s your thought on these academy based teams coming into the area and piggy-backing off the football clubs, which essentially you have to pay to have your teams professionally coached. What have you set up at Narrabeen Football club instead? NFC is not interested in getting outside academies to come in and get paid to coach our own kids. NFC doesn’t believe and don’t see the need for mums and dads to pay these Academy teams. They are purely for profit business models that are simply there to make money and leveraging off the back of traditional older local clubs to make a buck.

Social

What’s the real problem? Are these academy teams loading up their teams with the talented kids with wealthy parents? One of the major problems is they are simply just business models, the more you pay, the more they need to win. So, they are always on a poaching

drive taking all the good kids out of the local teams, telling parents if you ever want your kid to be successful you need to be in an academy team. This is stripping clubs of talent and undermining the whole Manly Warringah Football Association (MWFA) system. What’s the standard of coaches at Narrabeen? Are they the same as these academies or are they better? We’re here to coach the kids the NFC way. We do have a professional coach with football licence, as head coach for the club. Is this different from other clubs that use parent coaches? Yes, 100%. We still have parent coaches, however our program works like this. We don’t just train individuals, we teach teams. In that team is a coach and manager. They are part of the program; we teach them different styles and skills on how to coach their team better. We have MWFA backing our coaching courses and MiniRoos courses and skills training courses. If you want to be part of the Narrabeen program, we want you to do these courses so you know how to coach the NFC football curriculum. Our major benefit is the parents, trained by our highly professional licenced football coaches, become highly competent and they stay on as great coaches for years and years. The great thing about this youth program is the parents, coaches and managers build a mutual respect for each other as they have worked together as a team in the courses.

What businesses are funding the program and what do they bring to the table? Through sponsorship the businesses donate money to keep kids in sport. Besides the branding around the club community, they do it for no return and only to support the kids. Some of those businesses don’t even have kids in the club but want to sponsor the club and the kids. It’s purely old school caring for the community and driving a great activity for keeping kids in sport. What’s the difference in what you do versus one of the other big local clubs? Academies are popping up everywhere. But why would you spend money on these other academies when you don’t need to. At NFC, you’re getting professional coaching, local community, and everyone is a family here. Would you say that these academies are destroying the grass roots club atmosphere of soccer? Is it more about the cash than community? The question I have for you - as a father of a child who plays soccer, what’s the most you’re wanting to get out of soccer? Their happiness is important, not paying more for supposedly good coaching. A community environment is where you need to be at. At NFC we’re providing parents the opportunity of professional training skills. You can know absolutely nothing about coaching when you first come here, but you will be trained on how to coach and have fun learning it. Who is the Narrabeen’s head coach and what is his calibre? Juan Malzoni is NFC’s A-grade licenced professional head coach and he’s from Argentina. Juan is an ex-Boca Junior player from Buenos Aires’ number one club in the National League. Messi and Maradona all played for this club. That’s all that needs to be said.

“Our main task is to teach parents and kids a system that is better, so that they can flourish and enjoy the game.” HEAD COUCH, JUAN MALZONI run, pass and move, and that’s what our coaches implement. So, in a world where money seems to talk, even at a kid’s grass roots level, is Narrabeen Football Club on the up? We’re always been a midtable club. But now with the NFC program in place, we’re continuing to grow better and better. It starts with structure and professional coaching that our kids can only prosper from, supported by our generous community of sponsor businesses. Lastly, the three best things you love about Narrabeen Football Club? 1. Inclusion; 2. Community; 3. Happy Environment. •

Women’s World Cup is here in 2023, what’s this done for the game locally? Women’s soccer is getting bigger and bigger. Did you know the Australian Matildas are coached by a Spanish coach? European and South American Football is much faster and cleaner in their disposal of the ball. In Australian A-League games, you may see 1500 passes per game. In Europe and South America, you’ll see 4500 passes a game. It’s a lot faster. Juan, our Argentinian head coach is teaching our teams how to pass and how to move like an Argentinian does. They become faster and smarter and their mental fitness in football is so much better. Pass and

Alicia Pilates

It’s 2021 and Freshwater Village, the petite and popular beach suburb between Curl Curl and Manly, is finally having its revival. From high-end fashion boutiques and wholefood cafes, to art stores and Australia’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop, there is plenty to get excited about. Picture early morning visits to the bakeries, fresh coffee on almost every corner, and endless options for great food, and you’ll quickly understand why 2096 is thriving again. The truth is there aren’t many places between Manly and Palm Beach where you have everything from rock climbing and pilates, to massage, multiple hair salons, gift shops, jewellery stores, and a chic florist, to Thai, Sushi, Indian, Mexican and a new pizza place, plus fish and chips, chicken and chips, and a trendy barber, all within a 200m stretch. While Freshie has always been known for its quaint, beach-side vibe and special community focus, there is an infectious new buzz making its way down Lawrence Street. Next time you’re in the area, spend a few hours meandering down the high street. Grab a Mushroom Hot Chocolate at Veda, pick up a bottle of Noughty at Sans Drinks, check out surf sentiments at Keel, or grab brunch, lunch or dinner with a friend. And if it’s Sunday morning, you can ease your way into the end of the weekend at the The Organic Scarecrow Market.

We’ll see you there. 26

AFTER MONTHS OF EMPTY SHOP FRONTS, FRESHWATER IS EXPERIENCING AN INFLUX OF CONTEMPORARY STORES AND COURAGEOUS NEW BUSINESS OWNERS. COVERED STROLLED THE STREETS, SOAKED UP THE VIBES, AND INDULGED IN SOME IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HISTORY, MEDITATION AND MORNING SURFS.

COFFEE & COMMUNITY While the world crumbled under the weight of COVID, a couple of Sydney mates were hitching a plan to open a new coffee and corner store in Freshwater. Sam, Adam and Bernard (or Marshy, Bails and Skip) are big fans of Sydney’s laid-back beachy lifestyle. And in late 2020, the hospo, the tradie, and the corporate brewed the idea for Three Seagulls, the gorgeous, sun-soaked café on Harbord Road, where the old Polar Bar used to live. “The old Polar Bar - on our site since the 1940s – is a part of that history, and we look forward to giving it a new lease of life,” says the boys in their Three Seagulls manifesto. “The old school general store / corner store / milk bar was synonymous with the Australian way of life - you could find one near almost any Aussie beach. It was part of growing up. A swim with the fam, a chicken

sambo, a cold drink and an ice block… those were the best days!” At Three Seagulls, the team apply a modern take on the old corner store, with a focus on excellent coffee and friendly service. “We aim to be the local spot where everyone – singles, families, young and old - feels welcome to sit and have coffee and a bite; or take away a delicious sambo or some staples for the family. We want you to feel relaxed and at home… we want to be your favourite place to hang out!” Inspired by the trademark yellow of Australian Surf Clubs, the boys are passionate about their local community and every time you get your caffeine fix at Three Seagulls, 5¢ goes to the Freshwater SLSC. “We love local and will use locally sourced, sustainable produce wherever we can. Another goal is to

support local artisans, artists and craftspeople. Supporting this wonderful 100+ year old surf club is our way of directly giving back to the community.” Freshwater is a lucky suburb to have a bunch of boys so passionate about it’s culture.

ONE OF FRESHWATER’S NEWEST CAFES IS PROUD TO PRESENT A MODERN SPIN ON THE OLD AUSSIE CORNER STORE AND PAYS HOMAGE TO OUR ANNOYING BEACH BIRD AND FRESHWATER’S SWEET SURF HISTORY.

“Freshwater is a beautiful beachside neighbourhood with a community that enjoys long, active, sunny days and has a strong sense of local pride. “From the Aboriginal clans who hunted, fished and lived on its shores for millennia to Duke Kahanamoku the American swim champion who introduced surfboard riding to Australia on Freshwater beach in 1914, the area has a wonderful history.” And while the team admits seagulls are a little annoying, the noisy, white darlings are synonymous with the golden Aussie beach days we love. •

THE BOLD AND THE

Bubbles NORTHERN BEACHES MUM IRENE FALCONE HAS SINGLE-HANDEDLY TURNED THE ALCOHOL INDUSTRY ON ITS HEAD. BUT DISRUPTION AND BRILLIANCE COMES AT A COST, WRITES DONNA ARMSTRONG. Sans Drinks owner Irene Falcone is tired. The mum of four has had a busy week, talking to media and meeting a swarm of new customers in the non-alcoholic bottle shop she opened in Freshwater in May. “To be honest I’m absolutely shattered,” she says, still flashing her trademark smile. “Did you see the story on Channel 7 last night? It’s been nonstop.” By nonstop, Irene means the energy. The energy of what she’s doing in business has been nonstop. And sitting on a plush green bar stool at the Sans Drinks counter, it’s easy to see why one of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs is tired. In 2017 Irene sold her first business, Nourished Life, for $20 million. Since then she launched Sans Drinks online, opened a warehouse in Brookvale, completed a shop fit out, and unlocked the doors to Australia’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop. Irene works seven days a week, ordering stock, stacking shelves and shipping to customers from her online store, all while creating a storm on social media where she posts daily, and personally answers hundreds of questions about her products, conducting press interviews, being a mother, a wife and raising four kids. Not to mention fending off trolls who abuse her on social media.

“Have you seen some of their comments?” she exclaims, rolling her eyes. “They’re convinced I’ll go broke. They’re acting like I’ve walked into their homes and taken all their booze away. “I haven’t taken anyone’s booze away. All I’m doing is giving people a choice. I have never met anyone who doesn’t want to drink less.” And that’s a fair point. Do you know anyone who wouldn’t like to booze a little less? Aussies are a health conscious bunch after all. Why wouldn’t we choose to put less crap in our bodies?

DARING GREATLY What you may not know is Australia’s fastest growing drinks category is now non-alcoholic wine. In 2020, it was worth more than $4.5 million and the category is expanding at a rate of 800 per cent annually.

Some of the country’s biggest names in beer and wine, including McGuigan, Lindeman and Heineken have stocked for Sans Drinks, along with over 50 local and international manufacturers. “I had so many customers come into the Brookvale warehouse it gave me the confidence to think, if only half those people walked into my main road bottle shop, I can’t lose,” explains Irene. Sans Drinks holds tastings everyday in store, so buyers know exactly what they’re getting and if they’re going to love it.

“I have personally tasted every product we stock,” laughs Irene. “Now, you can too.” As we sit in the shop, chatting and snacking on Bliss Balls (yes, Sans Drinks stocks healthy party snacks too), the stream of new customers is endless. One young mum, with a two year old in a stroller, walks in at 3pm with a spring in her step. “I’m so excited,” she cheers to Irene. “I’ve told hubby we can have a couple

of drinks during the week and not have a hangover!” Ten minutes later she leaves satisfied and happy with two bottles of bubbles and three different cans - a variety of no-alcohol beer for hubby to try. Charles Kettering once said, “If you have always done it that way, it is probably wrong.” Maybe that’s a good way to look at what Irene Falcone is going. And as we head into Dry July, there’s a good chance Sans Drinks will be busier than ever. “I plan to open another 20 stores nationally by the end of next year,” says Irene proudly. Irene Falcone might be tired for a while, but something tells us we’ll be discussing disruption and business endeavours with her for years to come. •

ALICIA PILATES Arrives in Freshwater

Avalon local, Alicia Grabowski, is a go getter at heart. A dedicated dancer from the age of four and now approaching 21 years practising Pilates, she understands the alchemy that comes from moving your body daily. “I started tap, ballet and jazz at four and it was my life. I didn’t discover Pilates until I was 24 and I’ve never looked back,” grins the energetic, mother of two. “I’m 47 years old now and I feel 27.”

WORDS: DONNA ARMSTRONG PHOTOS: ALICIA PILATES

Alicia Pilates honors the traditional Joseph Pilates method and promotes the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. “It’s body mechanics and stretch and strength work,” says Alicia. “There are 25-36 exercises in a one-hour class and it’s low impact so it doesn’t hurt your joints. Pilates is all about the core the core is your power house.”

PILATES FOR EVERYONE Alicia opened her first home studio in Newport six years ago and credits a loyal network of locals with her early success.

And while many small businesses suffered in 2020, Covid proved the opposite for Alicia who has taken her fitness brand from a one-man band to 15 staff, three boutique studios, and growing. “When the pandemic hit, a lot of people were thinking, ‘I can’t go to a big gym’. At Alicia Pilates, we offer an intimate and personalised service and that really worked for us.” Amidst a pandemic, the brand forged ahead and the latest studio in Freshwater booked 20 clients in its first month. “I’ve got a great team,” beams Alicia. “Our instructors will challenge you, grow your confidence and give you support, all while you have fun and hit your goals. I tell people, in 10 sessions, you’ll feel the difference. In 20, you’ll see the difference. In 30, you’ll have a new body.”

surprise business is booming and Alicia trains customers from all walks of life. “We help people of all ages and fitness abilities. We see the surfer, the labourer, the middle aged man, the couple, the mum and bub, and the career woman. One of our regular clients is in her 80s. “We go into diet, mindset and your whole regime. I also affiliate myself with others who are helping the community and we work together as a united front.” An avid surfer, Alicia is full of health tips and encourages all her clients to design their day for physical and mental success.

And after a chance conversation with a doctor in Townsville, Alicia is convinced Pilates is the key to a long and healthy life.

“Chase the day, don’t let the day chase you - that’s the mantra I live by,” she smiles. “I love a sunrise, coffee and surf every morning. It sets me up for the day.

“I was talking to a bone surgeon in Townsville and I asked him, ‘How do you live a long life?” He said, “The key with a body that ages is to move. Move your body and your bones every day. The more you move, the longer the life you will live.

“A lot of people think they don’t have time for exercise, but they have time to line up for coffee and scroll social media. My tip? Make exercise a priority, then fit your coffee and Instagram in around that.” •

“At that moment I thought, ‘Pilates represents that. You’re moving, stretching, and strengthening your body and moving your bones.”

WORDS: BRONWEN VICKERY PHOTOGRAPHY: HYGGE HOUSE

A few short months ago in the March school holidays, we headed South on a family adventure to Canberra. Trawling Stayz and AirBnB for the perfect accommodation, we discovered Hygge House, a beautiful new home on the outskirts of Canberra. Up an unsealed road, we came to a farm gate and the entrance to Hygge House, nestled on the side of a hill with 180 degrees views, overlooking the magnificent Brindabella Mountain Range.

4 BEDROOMS · 5/7 BEDS · 2 BATHS

Barbara, our host, greeted us with a warm hello and goodies of cheese, chocolates and wine. Heaven! The kids flew out of the car and ran into the house to set up shop.

Hygge House is situated in Wallaroo, named after the rarely spotted woolly black wallabies and home of the Hills of Hall wine sub-region, which is often compared to Italy’s Tuscany and the Adelaide Hills. With the tranquil lifestyle of country living, adults will adore the home’s stunning gardens that boast 15,000 trees personally planted by Peter himself. Throw in horses and quad bikes for the kids, and Peter and Barbara’s Farm Stay has something for everyone.

COMFY AND CONTENT Nestled among boutique vineyards, with views all the way to the Brindabella Ranges and the Murrumbidgee River flowing through, Hygge House certainly lives up to its name. Hygge (pronounced Hue-guh), is a Danish word meaning the quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality

HYGGE HOUSE, WALLAROO

“We love the farm, the horses, and Peter’s quad bike rides.” Ruby, Scarlett & Ivy (sisters) OPEN PLAN LIVING WITH SEPARATE ENTERTAINMENT AREA

With accommodation for eight to 10 people, the house is beautifully decorated, and has everything you need to relax and unwind. Just pick one veranda for breakfast, the other for dinner, and soak up the views while the kids help Peter feed his horses. And when you’re ready for some time off the farm, there are endless attractions nearby too. Within a tenminute drive, visitors can discover Gold Creek, a wonderful tourist hub and home to Cockington Green Gardens (a picturesque park of

miniatures), the National Dinosaur Museum, Canberra Walk in Aviary and Canberra Reptile Zoo. A little further afield and only 25 minutes from Hygge House, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Canberra, our fabulous capital city known for its attractions and fun. So, next time you’re after some time out from the Beaches, or you’re looking for some good country air, jump in the car and head south to Wallaroo. Indulge the kids in the joys of farm life at Hygge House and treat yourself to good quality food and wine. Peter and Barbara will be eagerly awaiting your visit. •

PIZZA, PASTA, ITALIANO UNDER A CAR RAMP IN THE BACK STREETS OF BROOKVALE, IT ALL BEGAN. NOW NESTLED NEXT DOOR TO ONE OF THE BROOKIE’S DESTINATION BREWERS 7TH DAY BREWERY, SALE PEPE SITS AMONG THE BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANTS ON THE BEACHES. BEACHES COVERED’S PUBLISHER, JOHN VICKERY, SAT DOWN FOR A PIZZA AND BEER WITH OWNER ENRICO SINI TO DISCUSS HIS SUCCESS.

Pasta or Pizza? What’s the best way to test all the Italian flavours in one sitting? That’s a good question! Sale Pepe is about sharing food with friends and family. We suggest ordering various different dishes from the menu so you can get to taste the most of our delicious Italian food.

Enrico, Tell me the 3 top things about Sale Pepe? We’re well known for our traditional Italian wood fired pizza and fresh pasta. Our team have an artisan background and we’ve found a great balance between local and Italian imported ingredients Our aim is to create an experience for our patrons that make them feel like they are entering in a ristorante in the back streets of an Italian city. What’s on the menu and the two things I must try? Our menu is pizza and pasta based, which are both handmade in-house from scratch. However, we also have a wide selection of Italian entrees. But, I have to tell you about three dishes on the menu because they’re so good. You must try our half metre pizza - the Sale Pepe. It’s the best pizza you’ll ever taste with pancetta, gorgonzola, red onion and chili and Prosciutto di San Daniele all the way from Province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, fresh rocket, cherry tomatoes and fresh Italian buffalo cheese. Next, definitely our wood fired oven baked meatballs in an Italian tomato sauce. The sauce has been created from our family recipe. And last but not least, our homemade Tagliatelle Al Ragù, a slow braised veal and beef ragù.

What is your heritage? Where did you learn the art of cookery? I was born in Sardinia, an amazing island off Italy, where my parents ran a family restaurant. I grew up running around tables in the ristorante and always sneaking inside the kitchen to find some treats. Eventually I found myself getting involved more and more in the business and enjoying cooking with my parents. I became part of the team. Our home in Sardinia is beautiful. We have Olive Trees, where we make our own Extra Virgin Olive Oil. We also grew seasonal vegetables, so from the earth to the kitchen, food was always part of my life since an early age. I left Italy in my early 20s travelling the world and gathering more life experiences. I settled in Australia and opened Sale Pepe in 2012. And this was the beginning...

open their brewery. One day, they walked into Sale Pepe and approached me and asked, “What do you think if we opened a brewery next door?” I walked around the counter and I replied, “Can I hug you??!!” And within no time, we became great next door neighbour partners. How do you choose the Italian wines on the menu? We have a family friend who is a wine connoisseur and they’ve helped us create a selection of wines to match our style of Italian food. Enrico, last words? We are in love with what we do. As Italians, we are very attached to our traditions. That being said, we love to share the most important things in our lives and especially around the dining table. So come and join us for an authentic Italian cuisine made with love. You can book a table online at www.salepepe.pizza or give us a call on (02) 8542 4990. •

Crowd mix? Who are you inviting for a gathering? Sale Pepe is a perfect fit for any age group or occasion with a casual set up. We’ve got both inside and outside seating to accommodate everyone’s tastes. The beer next door, tell us your connection with 7th Day Brewery? BROOKVALE WAS FORMALLY THE INDUSTRIAL WAREHOUSE OF THE BEACHES. BUT IF YOU HAVEN’T CAUGHT UP ON ALL THE HOO-HA ABOUT THE BREWERIES AND GIN HOUSES, YOU SHOULD HAVE NOTICED THE ARRAY OF GREAT FOOD, COFFEE AND RETAIL SPACES DONNING THE BACK STREETS. ONE PLACE STANDS ALONE AS AN AMERICAN SPORTS BAR, TOP OF ITS GAME WITH ALL THINGS SMOKED AND A PARADISE FOR SPORTS FANATICS WHO LOVE BEER, BBQ AND GOOD TIMES. Chubb’s Bar & Q was born from the love of American Sports and serving up the coldest beers, the meatiest smoked ribs with chopped brisket, burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and the famous smoked wings with eight different sauces and rubs. How can you resist? Only 400m from the Mighty Sea Eagles’ Brookie Oval, it’s a pre-game drink and feed spot. Or, if you’re more inclined, you can kick back with a beer in hand and watch the game on the 12 televisions dotted around the space. You’ll never miss a tackle, kick or scrum and have the best seat in the house. Sports-crazed Gibbo is their biggest fan. So, we thought we’d get it straight from the horse’s mouth why Chubb’s Bar & Q is a Brookvale favourite. Gibbo, tell us what you love about Chubb’s. 1. Food: Their smoked food is amazing; ribs, brisket, burgers, wings. 2. Beer: They serve beer in a frosty cold glass… it’s the little things. 3. Sport: You name it, they’ll play it. A sports bar that does it right. Tell us a little bit about the smoked fare on offer on Chubb’s menu. They have a massive smoker that the Pit Master commands to create the culinary magic. You can actually smell it from the other side of Brookie. Whether it’s the full meat platter or a good old burger, the food is awesome. $5 schooners, is this true? What else is on tap? and I know they have Coors, CC and Dry, and some cocktails. But I hear they have rotational tinnies for $5 as well. Chubb’s owner, Jake. Tell me what he’s like and how he’s spreading the community love? Jake and I both play ice hockey and we’re both sports nuts, which is why the sports bar is so well set up. Chubb’s is also a supporter of many local sporting clubs, from the mighty Seasiders Baseball Club in Curl Curl to the Manly Bomber’s AFL club. They support numerous junior sports as well such as rugby, sailing and many more. The crowd mix – who are you inviting for your Chubb’s gatherings? Anyone. My baseball team calls Chubb’s our clubhouse, but it’s great for families too. Loads of space for everyone to sit around and enjoy the atmosphere and food. But anyone looking to have a cold beer, chinwag or watch a game are welcome to join me.

Winter Wellbeing with Melissa McLeod ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO WINTER OR ARE YOU MORE OF A SUMMER PERSON? WINTER CAN BE A WONDERFUL TIME TO RUG UP, EAT WARMING FOODS, REST AND RESTORE. However, not everyone looks forward to the darker nights and cooler weather. A number of people feel a bit low and depressed, have trouble sleeping and feel tired, unmotivated and sometimes overeat or drink too much. This could be SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). This is often attributed to a decrease in sunlight affecting the levels of serotonin, melatonin and circadian rhythms. Here are some ways to keep your mind harmonious throughout winter:

SUNSHINE & EXERCISE To brighten your mood, aim to get some sunshine and exercise every day for at least 10-15 minutes a day to boost your serotonin and dopamine levels. You could also speak to your GP about artificial light therapy.

EAT BRAIN BOOSTING FOODS Your brain is made up of 80% water and 12% fat, so it is important to keep hydrated and eat healthy fats such

as olive oil and avocados. Eating foods naturally rich in Vitamin D and serotonin such as nuts and seeds, flaxseeds and omega 3 fatty acids all of which will help boost your brain health. Amen clinics (www.amenclinics.com) also suggests lean proteins, foods rich in anti-antioxidants such as berries and probiotics. Your gut health plays an important role in your mental health.

CONNECT It is important to make sure that you are not hibernating too much. Connect with a phone call or go for a walk and talk with a friend.

PROJECTS Perhaps there is a creative project you would like to take up or have been wanting to start. This is also a good time for completing any unfinished projects. This time can also be good for clearing out your cupboards and wardrobe. Decluttering can be so cathartic.

CALM MIND A weighted blanket has been found to be soothing. Reading, yoga, journaling, meditation or practicing mindfulness can also be effective at keeping your mind in the present moment. Hypnotherapy can be very effective for calming the mind, to assist with sleeping, help clear unwanted behaviours or patterns and to ease anxiety. Please seek support and speak to your GP or health professional if you are struggling and feelings persist. Reach out to www.beyondblue.org.au. • Melissa McLeod is a local author, psychotherapist, clinical hypnotherapist, brain health coach, NLP master and art therapist.  BODY AND BALANCE 

Winter Exercise Survival WHEN WINTER HITS AND AS WE ARE SPENDING HOURS WORKING FROM HOME OR THE OFFICE, IT’S HARDER TO REMAIN MOTIVATED TO KEEP MOVING. BEING ACTIVE IS ESSENTIAL TO SUPPORT YOUR HEALTH, IMMUNE SYSTEM AND MIND BODY BALANCE AND IT ONLY TAKES 20 MINUTES TO AN HOUR OF EXERCISING, 1-3 TIMES PER WEEK TO HELP STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM AND HELP PREVENT ILLNESSES.

Lifestyle

circulates throughout the body. Your overall fitness, health and wellness experiences a higher vibrational level sending your body strong positive feelings.

“We are in special times on this planet which require special actions. Movement, Music and Meditation with positive intentions and visualisations is leading the way for me and my clients to be Fitter, Stronger, Happier and to find that place of Balance and higher vibrational living.” JILL HEALYQUINTARD

Exercise will relieve a condition known as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). This condition occurs when the days are shorter and colder. Generally, people are less active, eat more, sit longer which can lead to depression. We live in a gorgeous place on the earth, here on the beaches, and are so lucky to be able to breathe fresh air and be by the ocean. In winter, you can actually burn more calories or kilojoules as your body needs to work harder to keep warm. This makes your metabolism increase so your body burns more calories and fat to produce the energy for your workout. When you start an exercise regime, you’ll find your endurance increase; your heart, lungs and blood supply strengthen and the oxygen

Joining a class that consists of focus, breath, posture, alignment, balance mobilisation, stretch, strength, cardio, core conditioning and mindful meditation is wonderful for the body. All of Body & Balance’s classes from YogaPilates®, BodyBarre® through to TribalGROOVE Fusion® cover all ten principles for total Mind Body Balance. All classes conclude with meditation, positive intentions and visualisations. This will balance mind and body and have you feeling and looking fabulous all year round. Keeping up a fast-paced cardio walk, arm swings with squats along the way will not only keep you fit but help in weight management. You can also try running up and down some stairs, hill climb, or along a beach. Remember to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy a few moments of mindfulness, meditation and positive intentions.

“Jill has helped me survive many stages of life, and now menopause in full action, it’s a breeze with her care and knowledge of what women need to do to continue to live their best life.” MEL

“Jill’s classes have enabled my husband and I to be fitter and stronger than we have ever been... Since COVID we’ve been able to choose motivating faceto-face or live streaming classes, 3 times per week.” KATHERINE Did you know exercise boosts the feel-good endorphins? Exercising in the cold not only stimulates the release of endorphins but it also releases dopamine, serotonin and neurotransmitters. This helps us feel good and feel happier. So, keep moving to feel fabulous. In winter we tend to eat more and our meals are heavier than in summer. Eliminate processed foods from your diet as they will keep your vibrational energy low. Instead, eat fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, fish, lean meats and whole grains to lift your energy, your ‘good vibrations’ and feel happier. Keep hydrated with warm or hot herbal teas. They’re excellent for elimination and taste good too. Get a good night’s sleep. Our over-active minds can lead to sleep deprivation. This can be the result of the current global pandemic, being online more and watching many more streaming services. It’s important to sleep well and have at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. To help, take electronic devices out of the bedroom and try a few minutes of deep breathing, inhaling and exhaling. You’ll find your breathing will slow down and you’ll be in a more restful and relaxed place. •

REBOUND HEALTH HAS BEEN TAKING CARE OF PEOPLE ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES FOR MORE THAN A DECADE. NOW, WITH THREE CLINICS IN BROOKVALE, FRESHWATER AND WARRIEWOOD, IT’S ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S BEST EXAMPLES, OFFERING A MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE.

Rebound Health Director Andrew Daubney is on a mission to look after our community. With three allied health care facilities including a brand new space in Brookvale, he is determined to give people a greater experience on their health care journey. “I became an Exercise Physiologist because I love helping people, and I love exercise,” says Andrew. “After 15 years experience in the health and wellbeing industry, I found that my true calling was to use exercise to manage and treat mental health conditions. Now, my job is to lead an amazing team of allied health professionals to improve the health of our community.”

Lifestyle

Andrew employs an experienced team of experts who treat clients like family. And with a range of disciplines, their combined skills help develop holistic solutions to complex situations.

“We were frustrated seeing our clients’ health not managed well because they were bouncing from one place to another,” explains Andrew. “At Rebound, we’ve created an environment with exceptional

practitioners to help clients improve their health with the least amount of fuss.”

trust the person they’re working with regardless of what they’re going through.

With services including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and dietetics, and each Rebound Health clinic has organically grown to specialise in certain aspects of personal health.

“We have exercise groups for over 60s, and work with everyone from paralympic athletes to young people,” shares Andrew, proudly.

Freshwater (based at the Harbord Diggers) focuses on physiotherapy and women’s health while Warriewood and Brookvale both target exercise physiology for people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart problems, cancer, and hip and knee replacements. Both locations have large areas to run group classes and workshops. “Brookvale also covers dietetics,” adds Andrew. “We have three dieticians and our Senior Dietician works closely with young people and eating disorders.” Unlike many gyms, Rebound delivers highly tailored programs to meet an individual’s specific needs. “Some of our members have cancer, others have had a hip replacement. We want people to know they can

At the end of the day, Andrew and his team want all their clients to live better and move better, so they can do the things they love. “Some people come here for a few weeks, a few months, or forever,” he explains. “Our aim is to get them leading a healthy lifestyle, which means saying yes to the things they love to do. That might be a walk, a marathon or playing with their kids or grandkids. If it’s important to them, it matters to us.”

“After 15 years experience in the health and wellbeing industry… my true calling was to use exercise to manage and treat mental health conditions.” Andrew Daubney

EDUCATING OTHERS

With a philanthropic philosophy, Andrew is always seeking innovative ways to give back to his community.

In recent years, The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has become a significant focus for Rebound Health.

“When I took over the business, I wanted to give back without giving lots of money because we didn’t have any. We set up a partnership with Headspace - the youth mental health clinic in Brookvale. Kids at Headspace can access two exercise sessions a week, for 10 weeks, for free.

“When the NDIS was rolled out a few years ago, it opened up the opportunity for us to take what we were already doing and apply it to help a wider population on the Northern Beaches,” explains Andrew.

“There are great benefits to this program, including social interaction and connection. It’s important these kids feel like they’re part of something. And they get hot and sweaty while they’re at it.” A focus on mental health came naturally for Andrew who has suffered depression. “As someone who has struggled myself and led a very active life, I know the positive impact a healthy lifestyle can have.” Rebound’s amazing Women’s Health Physiotherapist, Claire Mills, also does pro bono work with the Womens Shelter. For the team at Rebound, it’s simply the way that they choose to live out their core business values.

“Again, it was something we started because we cared about mental health. We wanted to run group classes and give people who were socially isolated, or have stigma attached to their condition, a safe space to exercise.” In April, the group launched the Rebound Academy, teaching other health practitioners about the NDIS space. “We’re doing seminars and roadshows and educating people in our profession. The NDIS has given us the opportunity to help more people. Now, I want to share that knowledge with others. A lot of health practitioners put it in the ‘too hard’ basket. It can be challenging, but it’s really rewarding work and I want to help others take that path.”

“We’ve created an environment with exceptional practitioners to help clients improve their health with the least amount of fuss.” Andrew Daubney

GIVING BACK

While Andrew takes a brief moment to appreciate his new sunlit space in Brookvale, the most important thing remains, his team and the fact that they are changing lives. “There is increasing isolation within our community,” he notes. “We have created a space here in Brookvale that’s very welcoming and feels like home. But it’s not about the size or how we big we get. It’s all about the number of people we can help.” For more information or to find out if Rebound Health is the home for your health, contact Andrew and the team today. •

 SKIN CANCER CHECKUP TIME 

THE DAY I SAVED MY SISTER’S LIFE.

Lifestyle

“IF IT ONLY HAPPENS ONCE A YEAR, IT’S A GOODYEAR!” IT’S A WELL-USED ADVERTISING SLOGAN FROM THE GOODYEAR CAR TYRE COMPANY BUT HAS THE BRUTAL TRUTH OF A LIFESAVING YEARLY HABIT. JUST LIKE YOUR YEARLY DENTIST CHECK-UP, THAT TRIP TO THE GP OR YEARLY OPTOMETRIST EYE TEST, GETTING YOUR SKIN CHECKED AFTER THE SUMMER IS A YEARLY EVENT THAT WE SHOULD ALL HAVE PENCILLED ON THE CALENDAR. HERE’S THE STORY OF HOW I INADVERTENTLY SAVED MY SISTER’S LIFE. I don’t know about you, but I had one of those amazing family doctors, Dr Michael Campbell. He had been my family’s doctor since birth. About three years ago, I was 43 at the time, he hung up his boots and retired to the golf course. I mean, how dare he, was my first thought. But to be fair in my eyes, he hadn’t aged a day in all the years. I honestly thought he was one of those guys, kind of like Yoda, never ages, will be going strong all my life.

Now this is the important bit, Dr Campbell was old school GP, not that I really knew that as he had always been my doctor. It was the norm now that I think about. If I went to see him for a common cold, he would burn off a wart, tend to a wound, check my ears, throat, and go over me with a blue light and burn off those crusty bits of skin on my hands. It was just what he did, patient maintenance I assumed. But that doesn’t happen anymore, the GP writes you a script for the flu and you’re on your way. So, the crusty skin bits kept building up on my hands. We won’t talk about the warts but that’s neither here nor there. One day at a marketing client visit to the Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic, owner Ross said to me upon leaving, “You really should get those checked out.” I did the usual, yeah-yeah one day. I’m a little busy now. Megan, my sister, who was with me at the time, has many body moles. She said the same thing, you know the story, we’ve all done it. Six months, maybe even a year passed, and the skin on the hands were getting worse. So, I finally went and saw Dr Greg Cusick at the Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic. Now this man is fascinating to listen to. His knowledge of skin and all the layers and ways the sun affects you, he made the visit amazingly interesting but mainly very informative in a simple easy language to understand.

If you need a skin check, this is the best place to go. I went for my first check-up last September and Dr Greg found three stage 1 melanomas on my body. He saved my life. Let him save yours.

54

Did you know Bob Marley died of a skin cancer melanoma? The guy was a Caribbean native, the sun and his lifestyle were one. In the end, I left with such a relief of knowledge that I was okay, bar the 10 blisters on my hands from where the crusty spots were frozen off. But with a true sense of wow, that guy really knows his stuff and now, so do I.

WORDS: JOHN VICKERY On returning to the office, I told my sister of my experience and she said to me, “Oh did you, I really need to do that too, why didn’t you book me in?” So instead, she made her own appointment. Megan’s appointment went a little differently. Two moles looked a little fishy and to Megan and the family’s shock, the results came back positive for Stage I melanoma. Holy sandcastles we thought, this isn’t good. The story ends well with several more melanoma moles removed as they were caught in the first stages and dealt with so Megan is all okay. But, and here’s the kicker, Megan is healthy. She’s not a sunbather who hangs at the beach all summer. Would she have eventually gone and got her skin checked if I hadn’t gone to fix an issue that my old GP regularly took care off, without me even thinking about it? I think we all know the answer to this one and it’s a resounding, NO! If this had progressed past where they were at with the gravity of time, Megan, our family and her life could have been destroyed. Do yourself and your family a favour. If you live in Australia, go and get your skin checked once a year. Period! As the Surf Life Saving slogan for surf patrols states: “No Lives Lost!” It’s the goal of every summer. Give Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic a call today and fix a yearly ‘life saving’ calendar event. •

fact, on average, it only takes 20 minutes for a full body wellness skin check.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Anyone can be at risk of developing skin cancer, though the risk increases as you get older.

Prevention is what’s essential to fighting melanoma. It’s also essential to see a doctor who has the experience, education and skills to fight the cancer fight.

Skin cancers occur when un-repaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutations or genetic defects that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumours.

From the start, you want to be seen by a medical doctor who has more than a decade solely detecting, diagnosing, monitoring and managing skin cancer. You want a clinic with the latest medical technologies to ensure you’re getting the best skin cancer advice, pathology performed by the best in Sydney, and if needed, surgery performed by someone dedicated solely to skin cancer surgeries.

Anyone can get melanoma but these factors increase your risk: A family history of skin cancer. Large number of moles on your skin. Sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and burn easily. History of severe sun blistering and sunburns. Spent lots of time outdoors, unprotected. Actively tan or use solariums or sunlamps, or work outdoors.

SKIN CHECKS Every year, most of us get our eyes and teeth checked. So, why should getting your skin checked be any different. It doesn’t take long to get your skin looked at by a Professional Skin Specialist. In

That’s where Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic come in. The team takes the time and care to assess your skin and spend the time required for a thorough examination from head to toe. So every year - STOP, and say to yourself, “It’s time for my yearly skin check!” You can book an appointment with our NBSCC’s specialist team online at www.nbscc.com.au or call their clinic on (02) 9999 0336. •

A GUIDE TO STYLING WITH PLANTS AT HOME

Styling Spaces Lifestyle

WITH JASMIN SMITH, GRO URBAN OASIS WARRINGAH MALL

Take your plant styling efforts to the next level. Pebbles or coconut fibre on top of soil can look visually neater and can minimise soil mess. Use one colour of pebbles or a mix of earthy coloured tones or jade pebbles. You can even get creative and create patterns. Psychologically, a group of three plants is more appealing and engaging and is more memorable than a group of two. In plant styling, there are many ways to create this grouping effect. For the next level plant lover, a pot plant, terrarium and kokedama all in one grouping will look like a unique plant paradise. Something to remember when it comes to groupings is the same size is not always best. Choose a range of shapes, sizes and heights. The tallest items should be in the back, the shortest in front. This creates visual dimension, meaning through levels, colours and shapes, it will be more pleasing and exciting to the eye. Texture is such an easy and fun way of adding visual interest to your home styling. Think embossed, rattan, matte painted, glazed, reactive glazed and timber… the list of texture goes on and on. Throw a basket into the mix or a sand textured or ribbed pot. Texture instantly breaks up

sameness and adds some extra visual excitement. There are so many fun and beautiful planter pots and baskets out there with creative textures to suit your spaces. If you are somebody that dreams of creating an indoor jungle, make the effort to match your pots or you’ll find that your jungle will start looking chaotic and messy. Pots should match or complement each other in groupings and clusters as well as in the same areas. Are you a minimalist? One plant in a simple pot can do so much without overwhelming a space. Whether it be a small Spider plant on a desk or a grand tall Fiddle leaf fig on the floor, plants are a minimalist’s style best friend. The colour rules - choose pots all in one colour, two colours or max three colours. Different shades of one colour are an effective way for those who love colour to feel like they’re still using a lot. Sticking with one sole pot colour will make the plants stand out and be the stars of the show. Something to steer clear of is choosing colours that don’t match your existing space. For example, don’t choose a yellow pot if there isn’t any yellow in your space.

Plants can be styled into every room. Provided the room has access to a source of natural light, a range of indoor plants will thrive. Each plant requires different conditions. Ferns love humidity so the bathroom is a great home for it. Devils Ivy grow long and trail so a high shelf would be perfect. Rubber Plants thrive in bright light so by a large window in a living area will be quite impressive. Hanging and tall plants equal vertical style. They break up a blank wall or space without having to hang up a picture or painting. A tall plant looks stunning in a corner of a room, while two tall plants on either side of a doorway frame the entrance visually and gives a sense of grandeur. There are a range of hanging planter pots on the market or opt for the 70’s revival of the macrame pot hanger. A patterned pot will work better with plants with plainer leaves such as Peace Lilies, Strelitzias, Rhipsalis etc. A plain pot will work great with plants like Calatheas, Dieffenbachia or Marble Queens where their foliage is much more patterned and prominent. Plants are the best home decorators with so many visual and health benefits. Have fun and enjoy watching your living spaces come to life. •

NORTHERN BEACHES, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - SINCE 2014

STOCK UP ON WINTER MARKET FRESH WITH YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL GROCER, THE HARBORD GROWERS MARKET “BEAN” THERE, DONE THAT?

PUMPKIN

Well, do it again because you can pretty much add this legume into anything. From Cannellini to Kidney to Lima to Black Beans, their incredible source of protein and fibre will keep you feeling fuller for longer during those wintry nights. Try Syndian Adzuki Bean and Kumera Patties available at Harbord Growers. Densely packed with nutrients, minerals and vitamins, once in your belly, you’ll be full of beans!

There’s so much more to the humble pumpkin than just soup. Its versatility is underrated and with winter at our doorstep, you can carve out whatever you wish for the dinner table. You can include this hearty vegetable in a curry, risotto, casserole, and savoury or sweet pies. Thinly slice them and layer them into a lasagne. Make sure to include it into your winter diet as it is packed full of Vitamin A, C, and E. It also helps to hydrate your skin so it’s definitely a winter essential.

MANDARINS MEAT & POULTRY

What’s not to like about Mandarins? They have so many amazing benefits like high levels of Vitamin C, antioxidants to help lower bad cholesterol and promote good cholesterol plus they help neutralise harmful toxic effects of free radicals, making your skin look younger and healthy. Easy to peel and available in many varieties, our favourite must be the Imperial. The perfect munch-size fruit to add to the kids lunchbox or to enjoy for an afternoon snack.

At Harbord Growers, you can find a great selection of fresh cuts of meat to include in your winter meals. You can roast, braise, slow cook, bake or smoke. Beef for example is rich in iron, helping your red blood cells carry oxygen to the cells throughout your body. This will help in your energy levels especially when all you feel like is jumping under the warm covers and hibernating all day.

POTATOES

HOMEMADE STOCK

What’s your favourite potato? Desiree is a popular all-rounder especially in casseroles, soups and spicy curries. Kestrels have a distinctive purple-blushed skin. There’s no need to peel - simply wash, gently boil then roast and smash. Delish! The unwashed Brushed is great for french fries, mashing and roasting. They’re also a good choice for jacket potatoes. The firm New Potatoes are best boiled and pan-fried with a drizzle of olive oil and pesto.

Don’t waste your vegetable trimmings – use them to make stock! Nourishing home-made vegetable stock is all natural and free of any preservatives. Use any leftover veggies in your fridge and remember, all your vegetable trimmings can be frozen over time until you are ready to make your stock.

Waste Bin System

High-Fold Cabinets

Powerpoint with USB

If the kitchen is big enough to allocate space for a waste management system in a pull-out drawer, it’s so worth it. Our biggest tip is to put bin one side of the sink and dishwasher the other side – scrape, rinse then dishwasher. There are many configurations available; it’s just a matter of choosing the size that best works for you and your household.

It’s the smallest things that can make a difference to a new kitchen design. Installing overhead cabinets that lift up and out of the way, like Blum Australia’s AVENTOS lift systems can make tasks like unpacking the dishwasher more efficient. For a little more luxury, combine the SERVO-DRIVE electronic easy touch and open lift system.

We are becoming more and more reliant of electronic devices, even in the kitchen. So having powerpoints with USB outlet is very practical. The latest in design is the EVOline®BackFlip – a pop-up in the benchtop. With a light touch, it turns the insert of the built-in point upwards and reveals two sockets and a USB Charger.

5 Ways TO PREPARE YOUR HOME

TO SELL FOR MORE THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER, THE WEATHER IS COOLING AND WE’RE ALL STARTING TO LOVE GETTING ALL NICE AND COSY AT HOME. IT MUST BE WINTER. HOWEVER, WHILE THE TEMPERATURE IS DROPPING, THE PROPERTY MARKET IS HEATING UP ACROSS SYDNEY’S NORTHERN BEACHES. PEOPLE ARE LOOKING TO BUY AND THE COMPETITION IS HIGH. SO, IF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT SELLING, NOW IS A GREAT TIME. To put your home up for sale, you can start preparing now so that it presents well, stands out from the rest and leaves a great impression on buyers. Doing this can make your home more desirable and increase its appeal, ultimately resulting in a higher sale price.

5

To help, your local Upstate Property Specialists have prepared the following five tips to get you started.

Property

START WITH A DEEP CLEAN As obvious as this sounds, this is the best place to begin. Giving all of your windows and glass doors a thorough spray and wipe down will make them sparkle in the winter sun as potential buyers look around, especially if your home is near the water! Steam cleaning the carpets and polishing wooden floors will keep every room bright, and having everything clean will make people feel comfortable.

DECLUTTER TO CREATE SPACE A cluttered house can make your home appear cramped, and that’s the last thing you want your buyers thinking. So, it’s time to create some breathing room. Walk around and think about what you can remove to keep rooms looking light and spacious.

GIVE THE GARDEN SOME LOVE People take in your whole home, and that includes the garden, the lawns and even your pot plants and flower boxes. However, winter can take a bit of a toll on the greenery. So, put that green thumb to work. Purchase some colourful plants and pots, rake up those dead leaves, remove weeds, fertilise early before your buyers arrive, and turn on the sprinkler. If you don’t have a garden, buy some internal plants and arrange some florals in the flower box on the veranda. People love that extra touch as it creates a warm and welcoming mood.

REPAIR AND RENOVATE Getting those much-needed repairs and renovations done before you sell can make a huge difference to the final result. Why? Buyers love a home that looks fresh and well-maintained because it’s less they have to do after they become the new owners! Most importantly, they’re willing to pay more for this convenience too. Rust, peeling paint, chipped walls, creaky floorboards and damaged finishes all make a bad impression, however, if everything is looking great, they will feel far more confident about making a bid or placing an offer.

GET YOUR HOME PROFESSIONALLY STYLED When people look around your home, they take everything in and make a decision based on the whole picture.

This means that the styling of each room, from the furniture to the paintings, the fruit bowl and even the smell of a candle can influence how they value your home in their head. So, consider having your home professionally styled by a specialist who can offer you everything to make your home really pop.

BONUS TIP: LEAVE IT ALL TO THE UPSTATE PROPERTY CONCIERGE TEAM If you’re looking to sell and get the best price, you’re welcome to use our complimentary Property Concierge service. DISRUPTION HITS THE PROPERTY MARKET. WITH HISTORICALLY LOW INTEREST RATES (THANK YOU CORONA VIRUS) SYDNEY’S PROPERTY MARKET IS BOOMING. AND WHILE GETTING ON THE LADDER MAY FEEL DAUNTING FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS, NEW COMPANIES ARE DISRUPTING THINGS FOR THE BETTER, SAYS WMW LAWYERS.

Companies like BrickX have revealed innovative new ways to invest, and created fractional property platforms where ordinary individuals can buy up to 5% of the 10,000 bricks in any given property. In addition to being able to sell your bricks, to earn potential capital returns, owners of bricks can also earn rental income per brick. By disrupting the traditional home acquisition method, this ingenious model provides an opportunity for ordinary Australians to potentially obtain a stake in incredible properties across Sydney and all-around Australia.

FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS When it comes to the power of collaborative asset procurement, the possibilities of entering the property market are certainly not limited to BrickX. Entering the market with a family member or trusty friend may not only strengthen your borrowing position but may also increase your borrowing capacity. By dispersing and dividing the many moving cogs of acquiring property, joint ventures with two or more parties allow those involved to focus on their strengths. For instance, one individual may have a readily available deposit whilst the other may have the ability to service the loan. In such scenarios, there are several financial and legal tools available which may help parties manage their purchase. Loan facilities, for instance, can be compartmentalised so each individual is

responsible for their own personalised principal and interest repayments. Ownership can also be divided into percentages and if you wish to do so, you can pass on your interest to a party who is not the co-owner of the property. Similarly, family pledges allow for a family member to guarantee part of your home loan whilst also being able to choose how much of the loan they are guaranteeing. This option may help individuals satisfy the deposit requirement and may even eliminate the need to pay the Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) altogether. To avoid paying the LMI, purchasers will usually need to have at least a 20% deposit or have part of the deposit guaranteed. There also exists, however, a number of industry and government related exceptions to this rule.

EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS The First Home Loan Deposit Scheme (FHLDS) and the Family Home Guarantee allows eligible people to purchase a property with as little as 2-5% deposits. Similarly, industry related incentives usually originate as a result of bank policies relating to low-risk borrowers. For instance, solicitors who apply through some banks and employees of banking institutions are only required to pay a 10% deposit without having to incur the hefty LMI fee. Other government-related incentives include the First Home Assistance Scheme which provides significant concessions or exemptions to Stamp Duty, or the First Home Owner Grant

which allows first home buyers buying a new home or substantially renovating a home to receive a $10,000 grant. The First Home Super Saver Scheme (FHSS) allows individuals to save money for a first home inside their superannuation fund. This could help first home buyers save faster with the concessional tax treatment within their super. Finally, for those individuals who love to rent but also dream of owning their own home, there exists Rent-to-Buy or Rent-to-Own schemes whereby individuals can pay rent to build equity in a property whilst also having the option to buy the property at the end of the renting agreement.

Property

By thinking outside the box and harnessing the power of strategies akin to crowdfunding, “where there is a will, there is a way”, has never rung truer for those wanting to jump on the Sydney property market.

Although these agreements have higher risks, costs and interest rates involved, it may be a viable alternative to renting for indefinite periods of time. Similarly, under a Shared Equity Platform deal, a tenant will pay normal market rent whilst acquiring a fractional percentage in the property. Over time, this interest in the property may grow and the tenant may sell their percentage to use as their deposit. With so many financial products, incentives and policies designed to disrupt the linear and traditional property purchasing method, entering the property market may be more possible than previously envisaged. If you’re thinking about making the move, begin by exploring the plethora of options that could work for you, seek advice and guidance from the appropriate professionals, and begin the exciting journey towards property ownership.•

COVID HAS INFLUENCED MANY FACETS OF THE WAY AUSTRALIANS LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY. THE HOUSING MARKET AND HOME DESIGN TRENDS ARE NOT AN EXCEPTIONS TO THE CHANGES WE HAVE SEEN IN CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR OVER THE LAST YEAR. With lockdowns and general social distancing, not to mention the increase in work flexibility, COVID has had a meaningful impact on how we use the spaces in our home. Now that Australians have become accustomed to working from home, remote learning, exercising in the home, and having to socialise in open air spaces, they are requiring homes that fit this new lifestyle.

Property

People have more time than ever to spend in their homes, meaning new little things people didn’t used to want to spend the extra money on are becoming increasingly important to the modern Australian market. Time restraints were the biggest thing that prevented people from building their own home in the past. The cumulative time it takes to go to display homes, talk to the design contact, choose colour schemes, and everything in between was too much for the average Australian to handle. But now more people are finding themselves with the time to think about what their dream home looks and feels like and are willing to engage in the time and financial investment to achieve this. The most notable aspects of home design affected by COVID include:

HOME OFFICES

OUTDOOR SPACES

More and more Australians are choosing to work from home for at least a portion of their working week, and while working on the dining room table may have been suitable for a few days, they are now seeking permanent home office solutions included in their home design.

The biggest trend is the request for resort style homes. These tend to include central courtyards with a more cohesive indoor to outdoor design approach.

HOME GYMS As more people realise that they can have access to the same type of experience through virtual instructors and classes, they are continuing to prefer exercising without the gym commute. This has translated directly to a demand for home designs that consider space for a home gym or workout area.

STORAGE People are buying more gym equipment, recreational toys, clothes from online shopping, and long-lasting food and hygiene supplies – meaning modern home designs need an increased consideration for storage.

NATURAL LIGHT Families are more focused on how to build the home for winter sun, the summer sun, and their general orientation. This trend is proving great for customers, as having the right orientation can save money on power and makes the house more pleasant to live in.

ADAPTABLE AND FUNCTIONAL LAYOUTS People are focusing more and more on practical spaces and adaptable functional living spaces while they spend most of their time in the home.

OPEN SPACE Open space homes are also becoming more and more popular as people want a space to relax with friends and families. Social activities are also being brought into the home, and home designs are now expected to accommodate these events with large open spaces.

LESS BEDROOMS AND MORE OPEN PLAN A lot of people are now pushing for less rooms and instead, larger living spaces like kitchens, living rooms, and outdoor lounge areas. Overall, the number of bedrooms is decreasing for the average home, as spare bedrooms no longer seem necessary in lieu of home offices, home gyms, and recreational spaces.
