Autumn, my favourite season. Cool pleasant days, great ocean temperature and plenty of beach days left, without the crowds. Sure there’s the odd 38 degree stifling day but, just like the political polls, you simply can’t pick it.

Traditionally, it’s an interesting time of year. Holidays have been ticked, schools back, swim carnivals, Surf Life Saving Titles, footy in all codes is coming alive and the sound of the netball hooter at Curl Curl Netball Courts is about to start firing.

I just love it.

It’s time to get the wheels turning. And that brings me to this season theme: ‘Freedom Hunters’

I think we all want to be one of these. Free to spend the days doing what you want and hunting down your dreams!

For me, my freedom days would be an early morning surf, a brekky muesli fruit bowl with the tin lids, a long lunch at my local favourite restaurant, obligatory afternoon ‘Nana Nap’, a bear hunt for dinner at my local fresh-fish monger, butcher or grower’s market, quick beach swim, family dinner, movie snuggle with the wifey on the couch, sleep… and repeat.

What does your Autumn freedom look like?

Okay, first cab off the rank. On March 25th, we’ve got to vote in the upcoming NSW election. I ask you to think about this. Who’s going to get things done and provide the Beaches with the best funding scenario? And, as the pesky Meerkat says on TV: “It’s Simples!”

We have lots of ‘freedom’ things happening this Autumn. There’s Easter, ANZAC Day, Taste of the Beaches, Sydney Surf Pro and OpenAir Cinemas. There’s also some great events like the Manly Fun Run and Harvey Galleries artist exhibitions. You won’t want to miss out!

Pittwater RSL will feature Conrad Sewell on The Deck on ANZAC Day. Harbord Diggers has a ‘Gin Thing’ on 25 March. It’s Colormaker’s 65th birthday! Why not grab some paint bargains this April. After 10 years together as a band, 12 national tours and three International showcases, Bad Pony are ready to share their debut album, ‘Forever Up & Coming’ with the world.

An album marked by sincerity, it’s an indie-pop-rock gem that is polished, explorative and filled with genuine artistry reminiscent of iconic front runners and fan favourites, Foals, The Wombats, Two Door Cinema Club and alt-j.

“The album is a spectrum of all types of music we love, and it’s designed to take the listener on a descent into darkness,“ says the band. “We want there to be something for everyone on it. Thematically, it covers some ground about loss, depression, triumph, addiction, religion, community, but we think most of all, love.”

Sydney indie-pop four piece, Dande and The Lion have released their powerfully curated new track, ‘Children of the Hour.’ Following their previous single, ‘Harder to Breathe’, the band continue to pour their emotion into their beautiful lyrics, expressed through the powerful vocals of Natassa Zoe and Abbey Gardner.

‘Children of the Hour’ is a single that highlights the dynamic that Dande and The Lion have bolstered across a strong run of releases, stretching back to debut single ‘Wasting Time’ in 2019. The band’s musicianship manifests here; nuanced and open lyricism fusing together with bright, rich instrumentation.

The song’s narrative focuses on relationships and the chemical reaction we have when meeting a person that seems to come out of nowhere and have a huge impact on your life.

“‘Children of the Hour’ was inspired by a play I read by Lillian Hellman - ‘The Children’s Hour’ that was later adapted into a film starring Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine,” says Natassa. “Hellman’s story played a part in helping to initiate my songwriting process and I started to reflect on how this related to experiences in my own life at that time.

“The single centres around the push and pull within an intimate relationship; meeting someone who takes you completely off-guard and shakes up your world in a totally unexpected way.”

Collaborating with ARIA-nominated Producer, Xavier Dunn (Jack River, Graace), Dande and The Lion created auditory magic in Dunn Studios, Sydney, with mixing and mastering provided by engineer, Klaus Hill (Diplo, Snakehips).

This 10-track album is a culmination of three years of writing, refinement and recording. It showcases a band who has found confidence in their sound and honed their craft.

“As soon as we returned from playing at South by Southwest (SxSW ) in Austin, Texas (2018), we wanted to make an album. It’s been a dream of ours and though it was a long process, we’re so psyched with the end result.”

‘Back To Basics’ opens the album with a gentle opening swirling of strings, acoustic guitars and spacious vocals that pulls you in. Halfway through, they flip the switch and unleash their power, setting the stage for the remainder of the album.

The album then morphs and twists through various vignettes that map themes of loss, triumph, addiction, community, and love. Dabbling in pop arrangements, cathartic rock choruses, punk, orchestral and rap. On the

surface, this might seem an ambitious undertaking, but the result is a refined distillation of pure artistry linked by an overarching genre of power packed pop/rock that Bad Pony has been known to deliver.

Bad Pony will be delivering an explosive live set to venues in a national tour in support of their debut album ‘Forever Up & Coming’. Watch this space.

NOEMME

Noemme, an emerging indie-pop artist from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, is known for her powerful vocals and catchy melodies. Noemme began writing and performing music at a young age and has since developed a strong following in the local music scene. Her music is heavily influenced by the music she grew up listening to including Erykah Badu and India Arie. More recently, she has been inspired by artists such as Joesef, H.E.R. and Eloise.

Noemme’s new single, ‘Come Down’ from her upcoming debut album released in January 2023 has been met with positive reception and has been well-received by critics and fans alike. The songwriter’s upcoming album promises to showcase her growth as an artist, while sharing her lessons in love and life.

Noemme’s new single is about the toxic relationship she left behind. The single was originally created with just guitar and vocals in her signature neo-soul style, but Sydney-based Producer Dylan Nash (Meg Mac, Eleura, Dean Lewis) helped create this electronic pop banger for 2023. Noemme’s new single was released on Friday, January 20th 2023, in line with the worldwide trend of #NewMusicFriday.

“I was hurting and healing when I wrote this,” says Noemme. “Knowing the progress, I decided to release myself from a toxic relationship and wanted to share with others who know that exact feeling or are seeking it. I also wanted to make something people could blast in their cars or add to their shower tunes.”

Noemme will be releasing more music from her upcoming album in the coming months. She also intends to head overseas to see where she can take her music and collaborate with other artists.

Noemme has performed in a variety of venues throughout Sydney, including high-scale functions and festivals. Back in 2022, she was on the line up for Sunsets Festival in Warriewood, debuting a set of many of her unheard original music, further increasing her exposure. With a growing fanbase, Noemme is poised to make a big impact in the music industry.

With a mini tour planned for the east coast to promote the album, fans can expect to see Noemme’s live performances in various venues in the coming months.

Get ready, Northern Beaches! Singer-songwriter, Conrad Sewell, is bringing his hit songs ‘Firestone’ and ‘Start Again’ to Pittwater RSL. Mark your calendars and gather your friends for an electrifying evening of pop, rock, and soul tunes.

Conrad Sewell may have the down-toearth candour of a pub singer, but his voice belongs in stadiums. “I still get butterflies just before going on,” Sewell says with a glint in his eye; his golden hair peeking under a wide-brimmed black hat. “It’s like jumping out of a plane. I love it.”

The acclaimed Brisbane-born singer and songwriter, 34, has been singing professionally from a young age, long enough to appreciate the effect his voice has on people. Case in point, 2015’s “Start Again,” a spare piano ballad showcasing Sewell’s powerhouse range, went to Number One in Australia from his debut studio album, LIFE

So when it came to recording his longawaited follow-up, TKalbum, Sewell was adamant; it needed to sound raw. “I’ve

never sounded as good on a record as I do in person,” he says. “There’s just a power there that doesn’t come across any other way.”

Sewell started with a personal playlist of 60s, 70s and 80s soul pop and rock greats—Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, George Michael, and more—as his musical North Star. Sewell spent six weeks in Jackson Browne’s Santa Monica studio, where he wrote, produced, and cut all of the new material the old-fashioned way; in-person and with a cadre of like-minded soul addicts, including John Mayer, guitarist, Zane Carney, and Black Crowes’ keyboardist, Adam MacDougall.

“There were definitely those moments where we’re thinking, ‘Are people going to get it? Are these slick enough for radio?’” Sewell says. “But then we were

like, you know what, we need to make this the album we’ve been dreaming of. There’s a lot of heart in this music, and it’s important for the world to hear some stuff like that now.”

The stripped down approach with TKalbum represented personal unburdening for Sewell, of all the expectations he never felt he was meeting in the music industry. Sewell signed his first major label deal at age 17. Sewell had the whole package, boy-band good looks, endless charisma, and a pliable soprano that conveyed the emotional depth of someone twice his age.

He spent years touring the world and fine-tuning his sound, first in the pop band, The Frets, then the rock band, Sons of Midnight. Sewell rebranded as a solo act after his song with the Norwegian DJ/Producer Kygo, “Firestone,” ignited the charts across Europe. Before long, Sewell was opening arenas for superstars like Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and Jess Glynne.

In retrospect, Sewell questioned whether he was artistically ready to walk through the doors that kept opening for him. “I was like a puppet,” Sewell says. “I loved to write, so when someone would tell me to write an album like Calvin Harris or Sam Smith, or whatever, I did it. But when it didn’t connect, I questioned everything. Is it me? Am I not good enough? What am I missing?”

After a long period of disillusionment, Sewell made it to the other side.

are orchestral swells, Houses of the Holy guitar solos, Daptonestyle blues, and even bagpipes.

“Ego,” Sewell says, is the song that encapsulates the album. The bluesy track begins with hushed brass and syncopation that slaps you across the face. Sewell enters the confessional and holds nothing back. “I’m the ultimate people pleaser,” Sewell says, “And this song is really about me getting over those tendencies, letting go of my ego, and having an honest look at myself.”

power ballad “Rolling Thunder” “Just know that we’re broken. so many words left unspoken,” he sings.

“Caroline” offers the colder side of “Ferris Wheel”. It’s a gorgeous string and acousticguitar ode to the long drives and glistening night skies of young love. “Slipping Away” follows that nostalgic thread but with a sensual ‘70s flair. Here, Sewell’s falsetto reaches Bee Gee altitudes, as he basks in the glow of a ripping saxophone.

TKalbum kicks off with the vibrant punch of “God Save The Queen,” a Stones-y party jam about shaking off the invisible chains holding you down. “Ferris Wheel” is Sewell’s ode to big, harmonicablessed heartland rock. It’s hard not to think of John Mellencamp or Bruce Springsteen as Sewell sings of flashbacks and fairgrounds over a sun-dappled southern guitar. Similarly, “Believer” thrums the electric intensity of chasing an unrequited love. “Said you would leave me for dead, but I woke up in your bed,” Sewell purrs.

All of this emotionality builds to “Precious”, the album’s undeniable tour de force. The song was originally a ballad until Adam suggested doing a take that was faster, rougher around the edges. “I swear to God, it was like Joe Cocker came into the room and took over my body for six minutes,” Sewell says, still incredulous. “I started singing in this different voice, freestyling all the verses and everything that came out of my mouth just made perfect sense.”

Just as Sewell said when he set out to make this record, the final version is nearly identical to that raw cut. And with all due respect to the ghost of Joe Cocker, Sewell wasn’t possessed in that take. He was experiencing, maybe for the first time, what it is to be truly free.

“My gut’s always right, but I never trusted it,” Sewell says in his gentle, self-deprecating way. “And it took hitting rock bottom for me to realise my music depends on me believing in myself.” •

Beaches COVERED. columnist, Jill Healy-Quintard, from Body and Balance has been travelling around Australia in a van. Here’s what she’s learnt about freedom and what’s coming next.

Six months of #vanlife in spectacular Australia has definitely turned me into a freedom seeker.

Seeking new places, new experiences and opening up new horizons have introduced exciting new concepts and collaborations while still maintaining a wellness business in varied locations, from the outback and the city to farm life.

After 43 years working and awarded in the fitness and wellbeing space, 22 of those years in the North Steyne Surf Club, Manly, I have built a wonderful community, from the first Mums and Bubs on the Beaches in 2001 to A45+ Women’s Fitness and Wellbeing and more.

I have worked with amazing special guests including Melanie from Canada, with her Groove Movement, and now I am handing over the long running North Steyne Surf Club Wednesday 9.30 am class to fabulous instructor, Samantha Hillier.

For now, I will continue to coach ‘Live Your Best Life Now’ through MindBody Fitness and Wellbeing, via Zoom, and live stream YogaPilates Fusion, BodyBarre and TRIBALGroove from amazing Australian locations.

I will also present face-to-face in various places and run the online Body and Balance courses and webinars. I will continue to work one-on-one with clients and run small group programs over Zoom that include everything from breathwork to motivational affirmations, gentle stretches to high vibrational dance, nutritional advice and more.

Once again, I have been invited to present at The Wise Women’s Gathering on sacred Dharug people’s country in May and look forward to reconnecting with the many wise and wonderful women sharing knowledge, life experiences, diversity and equity. For Northern Beaches Photographer, Tamara Toon, photography is all about finding joy in the ordinary and magic in the mundane. A group of friends enjoying a picnic at the beach, a surfer heading to the breaks, kids being kids – her images capture the everyday in a unique and candid style that has become synonymous with her brand.

Describing her work as salty, seaside, feel-good imagery, Tamara aspires to convey to the ‘joie de la vie’ of life.

“I want people who see my images to feel a sense of fun; to associate them with good times and happy memories of carefree summer days and childhoods spent by the sea,” Tamara explains. “I’ve always lived near the ocean, and for me, it’s my happy place, a place where I can re-set, unwind and just feel a sense of peace. I aspire to share this feeling with others through my work.”

Having started her career as a photojournalist, it was here she found her love of imagery and of being able to tell a story not only with words, but also pictures.

“I’ve worked for small country newspapers where everyone was everything, so you had to be both the wordsmith, photographer, editor, you name it.

“I think my current work really reflects my background in that I endeavour to see things in a completely different light to anyone else. I love being able to take a photo of a place or experience that perhaps has been photographed a hundred times before, but with a completely different spin, one unique to me,” says Tamara.

“Choice of equipment comes down to personal preference. My current kit consists of my workhorse Canon Mark IV with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8.

I’m really keen to get my hands on a drone this year to complement my kit. It’ll definitely give me an exciting new canvas to draw from.”

With her media and corporate communications background, Tamara also offers her unique spin on imagery to provide her business clients with every day, natural looking photography to highlight their products and businesses.

“Whether someone is looking to buy one of my images for their wall or hire me to provide photography for a business or product, my style is always the same. Candid, real-life, fly-on-the-wall imagery.”

“I also really love Slim Aarons’ vintage style of photography; therefore, people might get a sense of that when they look at my work. For me, the 50s, 60s and 70s were all about fun and freedom so it really gels with my style.” •

Felicia Aroney is a contemporary artist from Western Australia whose weapon of choice is a palette knife, which she expertly wields to create sculptural paintings on canvas. It’s no surprise that Harvey Galleries have chosen to showcase Felicia’s captivating and multi-sensory artwork at their Sydney Road gallery. Her work is an incredible celebration of the beauty and complexity of the Australian environment, sure to leave a lasting impression.

Felicia, we love your striking work in acrylic and oil. How would you describe your artwork? I’d say my artwork is textural, sculptural, organic, contemporary and fluid femininity with a masculine application and edge.

What inspired you to become an artist, and when did you realise that you wanted to pursue art as a career?

My environment played a huge role. My father loved sketching and encouraged my artistic practice, and my European grandparents taught me to love cooking, using large utensils to stir ingredients and spread fillings over sheets of pastry. Later in life, it was the irregular architectural surfaces of European streets and old walls that captured my imagination, and I love the imperfections and antiquity of them. I strive to capture their essence in my paintings.

Who are some of your biggest artistic influences, and how have they impacted your work? I admire Andrea Bocelli. Not only is he a remarkable singer, but he’s also incredibly humble

and honest in his songs, presentation, and storytelling. As for artists, there are several whose work has influenced me, Sally Gabori, Clara Adolphs, Vincent Van Gogh, Dale Frank, and Guy Maestri for their unique approaches to their craft and their honesty in their artistic expression. I often use this term because one cannot fool your audience. Art must be relatable.

What’s your tone? Cool and calm or frantic crazy, something in between. My work is so physical. I’m often on my feet for hours at a time as I use my palette knife to move paint around the canvas. With my abstract landscapes, I strive to achieve a balance between drama and tranquillity, creating areas of visual interest alongside moments of calm.

One of my signature techniques is to use fluid, water-like strokes in many of my paintings. These strokes are particularly effective in my abstract landscapes, where they evoke the movement of the natural world. In contrast, my architectural “cubic” abstracts are designed to be easy on

the eye, with graduated blue tones that represent the sea and sky.

My florals are more figurative and calming, with a focus on natural beauty and organic shapes. Regardless of the subject matter, my goal is always to create an immersive and visually engaging experience for the viewer, with a balance of texture, colour and movement.

Your work is very textural, almost jumping off the canvas in 3D. What feelings do you hope the paintings evoke? How it has evolved over time?

My work is becoming more and more textural. I look back at works I painted 12 months ago, and I think my latest body of work has 50 percent more paint on the canvas. I love dragging the knife across my palette, witnessing numerous tones merging and applying it straight onto the canvas creating marbled effects. I hope it evokes curiosity, interpretation, depth and intrigue.

Your approach to colour is balanced and considered. How do you choose your palette? I sometimes have periods where I find myself craving a certain colour. In my most recent solo exhibition, “Nature Walk,” with Harvey Galleries, I introduced yellow to my repertoire. Although I typically favour blues, naturals, and greens, I found it incredibly exciting to experiment with a new colour and see how it interacted with my existing palette. Colour is essential to any painting, as is the importance of light and shade. By playing with contrast and value, I aim to create paintings that are both visually striking and emotionally resonant.

Have you studied art or are you self-taught?

I have a degree in Graphic Design (Curtin University WA) and studied Fine Arts as a minor subject at University. I found Graphic Design too rigid for me,

Who Gets Your Vote?

The 2023 NSW State Election is here, and it’s poised to be a significant event in Australian politics.

With the current government facing criticism over issues such as housing affordability, climate change policies, and public transportation, the election is expected to be closely contested.

According to Beaches COVERED.’s political pundit Mark Smith, “Perhaps we can expect a hung parliament with Independents holding balance of power. It’s tough to win again for the Coalition and may be a similar situation to the Federal election where the government was in power for a long time.”

How does a State Election work?

A state election must be held in New South Wales on the fourth Saturday in March every four years.

So as we head to the polls on March 25th, it’s time to decide. Will you give the Coalition a fourth election victory or return Labor to power for the first time since 2011? It’s up to you.

New South Wales is divided into 93 state electoral districts.

During a State election, voters must elect representatives to all 93 seats in the Legislative Assembly (a ‘general’ election) and half the 42 seats in the Legislative Council (a ‘periodic’ election). pp

MP, MEMBER FOR MANLY JAMES GRIFFIN }

As the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Manly and NSW Environment and Heritage Minister, James Griffin is seeking re-election in the upcoming New South Wales State Election. With a deep connection to the community and a proven track record of delivering results, what can we expect if James is reelected on March 25?

You’ve done a lot for Manly in your time. What have been your top three achievements for the area to date?

A lot of the work I’ve done have been behind the scenes, helping people who come through the electoral office wanting support and assistance. It’s hard to boil five years of effort into three key points but they would have to be:

• Opening Australia’s first hospice for young adults – Situated in the old Manly Hospital site, the $19.5m construction is now complete, and we will be welcoming clients in the coming weeks.

• Public school upgrades – $118m was invested into improving our local public schools including Manly Vale, Curl Curl North and Harbord.

• Post Covid tourism and economy task force – We implemented this to help get businesses, community events and tourism back to full strength with the likes of Encore Manly, the Barracks, Experience Manly and Surf competitions.

How important is it to have a local member in Government to deliver for the local constituents?

The decision making is done fundamentally by the Cabinet. I am a Cabinet minister – Minister of Environment and Heritage. As a result, I can take the concerns and voice of Manly directly to the heart of the government. If you elect someone who isn’t a member of the government, then they have the same level of opportunity as anyone else, elected or not, to knock on the door of and ask for funding or support for a community. It is vitally important people back and support

a Member of Parliament who is going to be a member of government because that is how you get the real work done. It is about being involved in policy and decision making and getting things done. You can talk, advocate and lobby but what have you actually done? I’m proud to stand here after five years and say, ‘Here is my record of delivery’. That is why you can trust what I’m saying I’ll deliver for the next five years.

What were you up to before politics? I did have a life before politics! I worked at KPMG in a management consulting practice. In parallel, I grew up playing junior rugby for the Seaforth Raiders, I was a member of Manly Life Saving Club, and I helped to chair Little Manly Community Forum to advocate for local issues.

What issues are going to shape this election?

There are many global factors like inflation and interest rate rises that are affecting the budget and ultimately people’s back pockets. The government is working hard to keep the economy strong so we can keep investing in roads, rail and public transport. There is a lot of effort required to continue building a resilient economy so we can have the best local jobs and keep them here.

Do you have a solution to the rental crisis?

We have implemented two policies to help people into the housing market, whether you are a grandparent wanting your grandchildren to live with you or a key worker wanting to stay in the area. We have ditched stamp duty in properties under $1.5m. The government is going to contribute 2% towards the price of a deposit for all key workers.

“I’m excited to get out there and get going. To continue building a local economy that is thriving and diverse.”

What we are saying is that these are the people we need in our community.

What’s your take on the Northern Beaches road link?

We have a unique geography on the peninsula that doesn’t leave much space for new road and rail developments. The government has introduced a $50 cap per week on the Manly Fast Ferry service in a bid to get more people off the roads. We have also increased the B-line bus services and introduced the B2 – an express service that runs from Dee Why to Chatswood.

At the moment, tunneling machines are going into the second Western Harbour Tunnel which will eventually take the pressure off the existing tunnel, bridge and Military Road. We are still committed to upgrading the Warringah freeway.

How do you see our energy transition roll out to renewables?

We are super excited to be the leading state in EV development. The WWF annual report shows we are top in the country in our transition to renewable energy. The NRMA is set to deliver 20,000 charging stations across the state so EV drivers will never be far from a charging port.

If you’re elected, what does the first 12 months of the new Parliament look like?

I’m excited to get out there and get going, to continue building a local economy that is thriving and diverse. I plan to restore Manly Lagoon. I’d love to get people swimming there. There are also plans for upgrades to NBSC Balgowlah Boys Campus and continued improvements to public transport systems. •

TOBY WILLIAMS }

• Northern Beaches Hospital –This incredible public health facility has dedicated and caring staff, and world class facilities. I was particularly pleased when Brad announced an $11.4million boost for Northern Beaches Hospital’s Youth Mental Health Services. It’s important that appropriate treatment and support is available to young people and their families.

• The new Forest High School –  This will be the first new school on the Northern Beaches in decades, and I’ve worked with Brad to ensure it meets community expectations. The end result will be a 21st century school providing excellent learning facilities for local students.

LIBERAL CANDIDATE FOR WAKEHURST

Referees Association to name just a few. My involvement in the local swimming community has resulted in two Life Memberships.

What issues are going to shape this election?

I’ve chatted to countless residents and the top issue that comes up is the cost of living. There is a substantial need to ensure our state’s strong economy is maintained so we are able to ease pressure on local businesses and family budgets. I am interested in expanding mental health facilities for young people, and protecting our local environment by opposing over-development, such as the development proposed for Lizard Rock.

Toby Williams is the Liberal candidate for Wakehurst. As a lifelong resident of the area, he has a passion for public service and a strong track record of community involvement. He also spent the past seven years working alongside Brad Hazzard. In Toby’s words, “A future Member for Wakehurst could not ask for a better apprenticeship.”

With Brad Hazzard retiring, the Wakehurst community needs a strong, local voice. Why are you the one for the job?

For almost seven years, I worked alongside Brad Hazzard to provide compassionate and helpful assistance to residents in Wakehurst. During the pandemic, he trusted me to take frontline responsibility in the electorate by attending community events and meeting locals to ensure he, as Health Minister, could focus on the COVID-19 crisis.

What have been your top three achievements for the area to date, under Brad?

• The B-Line bus service – Our big yellow buses revolutionised public transport on the Northern Beaches providing frequent, efficient and comfortable services to and from Sydney CBD.

How important is it to have a local member in Government to deliver for the local constituents?

It is absolutely crucial. You only need to look at what Brad’s passion and work ethic has delivered for our community to understand why. Brad ensured Wakehurst received its fair share of support for our schools, health, facilities, roads and transport, and our beautiful beach and environment. Our B-Line buses, Northern Beaches Hospital and Warringah Road underpass – none of this life changing infrastructure was delivered under Labor! Now is not the time to stop the momentum the Liberal Government has built over 12 years. A vote for Labor or an Independent candidate on March 25, 2023 will jeopardise the future of our electorate. The people deserve an elected representative whose voice will be heard at the very heart of government. Someone who can get things done!

What were you up to before politics? Before I worked alongside Brad, I worked with the Hon Natasha Maclaren-Jones MLC and the former Member for Mackellar, the Hon Bronwyn Bishop AO. I have substantial experience in community organisations including, Deputy Chairman of the Northern Beaches Red Shield Appeal Committee, Secretary & Race Secretary of Warringah Amateur Swimming Association and President of Manly Warringah Football

What’s your take on the Northern Beaches road link? Locals want to see Beaches Link completed. If elected, I will be able to advocate for a continued focus on Beaches Link, as well as the broader infrastructure project that will deliver the Western Harbour Tunnel and Warringah Freeway. I am keen to ensure the $75 million investment by the Perrottet Government goes to upgrade the Wakehurst Parkway and delivers improvements that help people spend less time in traffic and more time doing what they love.

How do you see our energy transition roll out to renewables?

Under Liberal, the shift to renewables has begun and a re-elected Liberal Government will ensure the energy sectors’ transition will continue. The Liberal Government introduced the Electric Vehicle Rebate and Electric Vehicle Stamp Duty Refund. As the number of electric vehicles increases, so should the availability of charging stations. I am not opposed to installing charging stations in public car parks.

If you’re elected, what does the first 12 months of the new Parliament look like?

I am ready to hit the ground running. When Parliament is not sitting, you’ll see me working hard in the electorate office and being out and about in the community. I know the essential job of a MP is to listen. •

GEARING

towards E-Bike Safety

When you see a duo of wet suited teenagers hooning towards the surf in tandem on an E-Bike, it evokes equal parts joy and fear. Local business Owners, Michelle and West Ashton from Energy Electric Bikes, and local politician, James Griffin MP, Member for Manly and Liberal Candidate for Wakehurst, Toby Williams, talk about how we can gear towards a greener, safer, two-wheeled future.

They’re fast becoming a Beaches’ phenomenon, and it’s not hard to see why. E-Bikes have become so popular in recent years thanks to their effortless and eco-friendly nature.

Michelle Ashton is the Owner of Energy Electric Bikes in Brookvale and an expert when it comes to electric bikes.

“Our vision was always for E-Bikes to give more people the ability to ride around Northern Beaches’ hilly terrain with ease, allowing them the freedom to explore their beautiful backyard without relying on their cars,” says Michelle.

The list of pros for an E-Bike is long; efficient, economical and seriously cool, they keep people active, and you’ll never have to worry about peak time parking again. There is a lot to love; however,

one growing concern is the safety surrounding younger riders.

“We have an awesome E-Bike community and we’ve seen it grow very quickly,” says Michelle. “But what was an adult luxury has become a must-have accessory for all ages and herein lies the problem.

“You only have to drive 10 minutes before you see a teenager firing along. We are seeing lots of kids going way too fast on roads, doubling up and not wearing a helmet. We love the freedom and fun young riders are having, but we are deeply concerned about the possibility of accidents to themselves and pedestrians.

So, what can we all do to prevent an accident that feels like it’s waiting to happen?

“The increasing number of young riders without a helmet needs addressing, and we are always looking at ways to encourage riders to wear a helmet. One thing we have implemented is a ‘No Helmet, No Service’ policy,” explains Michelle.

Energy Electric Bikes have partnered with Thousand, an American helmet distributor, who have created a stylish vintage helmet that meets Australian Standards. It has become hugely popular with riders of all ages.

“There is nothing cool about a head injury,” urges Michelle. “We are encouraging the community to set an example and wear a helmet and significantly improve your chances of a good outcome should you have an accident.”

Michelle’s sentiments on safety are thoroughly supported by James Griffin and Toby Williams. The Liberal candidates back her crusade towards safety, and their message is clear. “Kids, wear your helmet!”

“It is not the failure of the seller, but the responsibility of the parent and the rider,” says James Griffin, MP for Manly.

and active is important and children that cycle to school are likely to have improved mental health and more independence.

“The community also benefits from reduced traffic, especially around highly congested school zones where students are opting to ride. Kids have more freedom and can travel independently to sport or work which gives parents a break too. We would love to see the council create better lanes for bikes so pedestrians and cyclists can commute safely together.”

James and Toby share Michelle’s passion for promoting the wholesome mode of transport in a positive and safe way and keeping kids on the beaches outdoors, doing what they love, safely.

“It is about striking the right balance. We want to keep people safe without over-regulating. Ultimately, we want to get people out of their cars so we need to pull the reins in on unsafe practices regarding E-Bikes. If we focus on education, it will be beneficial all round,” says Toby Williams, candidate for Wakehurst.

As your State Member of Parliament, I am focused on supporting our frontline services for the long-term by hiring more doctors, nurses and teachers to recover from the strain of the pandemic as well as building a diverse local economy so we create and keep great jobs in our local area.

I am proud of my record. Even just the past couple months, there have been significant announcements for our local environment, improving local transport, and tackling the issue of problem gambling.

A $3.95 million investment is great news for Manly Lagoon. I recently announced $3.95 million in funding to build a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge across Manly Lagoon at the corner of Pittwater Road and Aitken Avenue. This will take pedestrian and bike traffic off the existing shared bridge, where cyclists must dismount to cross, improving pedestrian and cyclist safety and resolving a significant choke point for cyclists and pedestrians.

Manly Lagoon is an important biodiversity corridor at the heart of Manly’s natural environment; that’s why I am proud to announce my four-step plan to protect Manly Lagoon for future generations and help return it to swimmable conditions.

• Monitor water quality and take action to prevent weed infestation.

• Support natural regeneration and start a program to improve water quality.

Don’t be misled, The NSW Government has dealt with PEP 11. Time for the Federal Government to Step Up. The deeply troubling decision by the Federal Labor Government to end the court case against Asset Energy has brought PEP-11 back from the dead. I have always opposed PEP-11. In 2019 I tabled a notice of motion in Parliament stating my opposition. Since January 2022, it has been NSW Government policy to oppose offshore mining, and now a re-elected State Liberal-National government will go even further by legislating a ban on offshore drilling. We are doing this because of the uncertainty created by the inaction of the Federal Government.

Continuing to Improve Local Public Transport and fixing the buses. The past few months have been a struggle for local public transport due to combination of increased demand as people return to the city for work, and driver shortages caused by global and national labour issues. However, after months of work behind the scenes with Keolis Downer and Transport for NSW, I am happy to announce a three-pronged strategy to improve transport in Manly. This includes:

Commencing a new on-demand bus service for the Manly area. This service will connect commuters with designated transport hubs such as the B-Line stops and Manly Wharf, as well as other popular destinations like shopping centres and hospitals within your service area. A similar service has been operating in Pittwater since 2017 and has carried out over 600,000 trips with 97% customer satisfaction. This is due to its affordable prices and the ability to schedule pickups.

We will also launch a B-Line service that commences in Brookvale during the morning peak hour ending long waits.

Spurred on by the NSW Crime Commission’s report into money laundering and desire to tackle problem gambling, the NSW Liberals State Government has announced generational reform to poker machines. These measures include:

1. Supporting all eight recommendations of the NSW Crime Commission

2. Delivering mandatory cashless gaming through legislation

3. Player identity verification linked to a single bank account

4. Requiring players to set loss limits for a 7-day period

5. Ban credit and automatic top-ups, with gaming funds only allowed to flow from a bank account

6. Mandated breaks in play

7. Implement a state-wide self-exclusion register

8. Enable third part exclusion by a family member

9. Prohibit the use of VIP Lounge signage and ban political donations from pubs and clubs

10. Remove 2,000 machines from clubs and pubs by 2028

11. Work to transition NSW night life away from gambling

I’m proud to be tackling problem gambling and support Premier Perrottet in getting this important reform done.

All elections are important. This State Election is especially so. It’s easy to forget that under the previous Labor Government, this State was back of the pack and our area was overlooked. Let’s keep moving forward!

These numbers show that in both houses, the Government is leading in a minority. So to achieve a majority, the coalition must win 2 seats while the Labor party must win 10.

This may seem like a tough bridge to cross for the Labor party, but I see several ways in which it is quite possible, especially when the Liberal party keeps shooting themselves in the foot.

The obvious issue that first comes to mind is time. The Liberal/Nationals coalition have been in power for 12 years now in NSW and are asking the people to give them another four.

As seen with previous long-serving Governments, voter fatigue with either a particular PM or party comes into

Personalities very much come to mind when voters are making choices. While Bob Hawke was both liked and respected, Paul Keating and John Howard were probably more in the ‘respected’ category.

It seems at least one of these characteristics is necessary to win the voters over. How does this relate to Dominic Perrottet? After he took over from a very popular Premier in Gladys Berejiklian.

Mr Perrottet has been Premier since October 2021, by the time the election is held, he will have been in office for about 18 months. This is plenty of time for him to show voters who he is and what his agenda is.

I believe voters, in general, see the Premier as a devoted family man with integrity. The much hyped ‘Nazi uniform scandal’ didn’t appear to have much negative effect, probably because it happened over 20 years ago. Many of us have done things that might not look good in the public eye much later on. I think most accepted his apology and moved on.

Policy wise, Perrottet seems to have stuck close to the agenda of Berejiklian. I therefore don’t believe his personal standing with the electorate will have much effect on voting.

On the female representation front, the Liberal party may struggle as did the Federal Liberal party, the perception is that they don’t understand women’s

This pre-selection process is voted on locally by the Liberal party members of those seats from the 100 or so members of the local Liberal party branch. Toby’s credentials are, sound having been a staffer of Brad’s for many years. He’s young and passionate. Rory Amon is also an upstanding Northern Beaches Councillor who’s record of community service is impeccable, however I would have thought with the opportunity of choosing a popular female candidate in these seats, that would have been the smarter move from a party perspective. Female candidates ran in the pre-selection process but when the decision was made, they were overlooked.

It begs the question. Was this a deliberate move, even possibly at the expense of the Liberal party and its voters in this seat?

I won’t be surprised if these party people have simply handed the seat of Wakehurst to Mayor Michael Regan as people on polling day simply know who he is as an example.

In Pittwater, it seems another battle ensues; the Liberals vs a very enthusiastic Teal in Jacqui Scruby.

This promises to be an intriguing contest between two major parties that seem lacking in any sort of imagination in a changing political space. This, to me, seems to be leading to more independents (including ‘Teals’), Greens and other Crossbenchers being voted in, and being able to dictate terms to whoever wins the most seats, especially if they don’t win a majority.

The Question being, is this going to be beneficial to the people of the Beaches?

If Labor wins a majority, Chris Minns becomes Premier. Will the Beaches be hung out to dry, funding wise?

I’ll leave that up to you. •

Sophie (Year 12) and Isabelle (Year 10) Lavis live in Manly and are senior students at Queenwood in Mosman. Here, the sisters talk about life on the Beaches and their experiences and memories at Queenwood.

What do you love about living on the Northern Beaches?

ISABELLE: I am always close to the beach and the Beaches have always felt like a community. SOPHIE: The beautiful beaches, the great surf breaks and the community – enjoying all of this from sunrise to sunset.

Tell us about one of your earliest memories at Queenwood?

ISABELLE: My first day at Queenwood was at the end of Year 1, and I remember sitting in a classroom on the floor in a circle. My teacher was Mrs Baker and I felt so welcomed by all the girls and instantly loved it. SOPHIE: My first day at Queenwood was in Year 3. As I walked into the playground for the very first time, I remember the girls in my class running up to me with grins on their faces, excited to show me around the school.

What’s something you do or are a part of at Queenwood that surprised you?

ISABELLE: I never thought I would do water polo because I am not a very fast swimmer, but now it is one of my favourite sports, and I am improving every day. SOPHIE: Recently, the school offered me the opportunity to help support a new initiative with Mahboba’s Promise, a group of Afghan children who have recently found refuge in Sydney. On Saturday afternoons, we bring them to the Queenwood pool for an afternoon of activities. This has been such an eye-opening experience and so I am grateful to have met these children.

What does Queenwood teach you outside of the curriculum?

ISABELLE: Over my time at Queenwood, I have participated in all types of sports such as soccer, dance, water polo,

netball, tennis and hockey. I have also taken part in music opportunities such as guitar ensemble, saxophone and piano. SOPHIE: Queenwood offers an amazing variety of co curricular activities. In Senior School, I have been involved in surfing, an engineering course, dance, guitar ensemble, tennis and the Social Justice Club.

How do you balance school life and other activities?

ISABELLE: My teachers are flexible and understand the challenges of balancing co-curricular and schoolwork. I normally have enough time to do both and am often not in a rush. SOPHIE: My two passions are surfing and dancing. When I was dancing five days a week, it was challenging to meet the demands of school, but it helped me to become more organised with my time management. Now in Year 12, I find that surfing gives me the balance I need and helps clear my mind.

What are some of the best things you experienced at school?

ISABELLE: Some of my best memories have been made at school. Queenwood (has) challenged me to experience new things and make life-long friendships. One of my favourite moments would be the House Music Festival in Year 8, where my friends and I participated in a dance-off called Junior Item. The process of learning the dances and laughing when we all fell over made my year so much brighter. SOPHIE: One of the best things I have experienced at school has been the sense of community, and the encouragement not only from the teachers but from the girls in my cohort. We also take the Queenwood bus which picks us up from Manly.

What does Queenwood instill in you for your future endeavours?

ISABELLE: Queenwood has taught me to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals by overcoming the challenges thrown my way. SOPHIE: One of the school’s values, ‘Service’, has taught me to always consider others and the importance of giving back to the community and those in need.

What do you think is unique to Queenwood? ISABELLE: I think Queenwood is unique because each year group contains roughly 100 people. This has created a strong community within each year group and to strengthen the friendships between year groups, Queenwood has started to introduce Q-munity groups. This is where a few people from each grade come together for fun activities. This has expanded my social circle, especially in my younger years when knowing an older girl gave me the confidence to thrive at school. SOPHIE: Nancy the Cow , haha! (A cow statute in the playground with school history behind it). The location of the school along the beautiful Balmoral Beach is one of my favourite unique features about Queenwood. In PE, we are lucky enough to do different sport activities such as running along the esplanade and playing sports on the sand. •

THE NORTHERN BEACHES PROPERTY MARKET CONTINUES TO HOLD STRONG

Right now, the Northern Beaches auction clearance rate is hovering around 74%, which is still considered quite strong.

Between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, we launched several properties live to market, which helped get the jump on that traditional boost in supply that comes around Australia Day and this generated a huge amount of enquiry and interest early on.

“We’ve seen enquiry across the Sydney Metro market down about 28%, however on the Northern Beaches, we’re only down about 3%, once again showing the resilience of our market,” says Peter Mosedale –Upstate Director.

THE SECOND ANNUAL UPSTATE CONFERENCE

In early February, we held our 2023 Upstate Sales Conference, and it was another enormous success.

We had over 40 of our staff kick off the day with personal training, before sitting down to listen to several key speakers to keep them informed, get them engaged and train them in the best techniques to help our clients maximise their real estate results.

It was another inspiring day for our team at Upstate and a fantastic way to begin another stellar year ahead in 2023.

So, what does the future hold for Upstate?

Recently, our entire team sat down with a prominent market economist to gain a better understanding of the real data in the Sydney property space right now and keep up-to-date with what’s going on around us.

We were told that the majority of the Australian real estate adjustment has already taken place, and there may only be a little more to go at the worst.

This would explain why we continue to see huge volumes of enquiries about our open homes.

“Last week, we had 76 groups through a single property, and on average, we’re seeing 22 groups through every open home inspection. This indicates it’s still a strong market,” Peter tells us.

Of course, where the market is going to go from here, no one truly knows. What we do believe, however, is that interest rate rises are slowing. This is helping to bring confidence and optimism back into the market and tells us that there are blue skies ahead.

VINCENT WEST UPSTATE REAL ESTATE

Let’s recap on the year that was and our predictions for 2023.

We had a very busy year at Upstate Commercial, with more than 250 completed sale and lease transactions plus substantial growth of our asset management portfolio. Our highest sale price for 2022 was $26 million.

The average sale price for Commercial property in 2022 was $2,275,000 and the average lease price was $46,500 + GST.

Domain/Commercial realestate.com reported to Upstate that we were the number one agency for listings, with 3 times more views than their number 2 agency. This proves the size of our business, and the way we present properties is benefiting our owners that list through Upstate, with faster transactions and a greater choice of buyers and tenants. With over 35% market share across the Northern Beaches, we’ve identified the latest movements and trends for commercial property markets.

WAREHOUSES

The year remained strong for warehouses across the board with the big end of town being a little more cautious but still transacting with realistic vendors. The main buyers are owner occupiers with quite a few being downsizers who were selling their family homes to move into an apartment and keep their toys.

Other buyers are businesses that are doing well and expanding. With a distinct lack of stock, these buyers are paying more than investors to secure a place for their business as they know it will give the business security and will be a long-term hold.

Investors needing to borrow were not so successful in securing warehouses as they were unable to justify the yields against commercial lending rates and seeking circa 5% Net. On the flip side, investors who are cash buyers are still seeing value at 0.5 – 1% below cap rates of borrowing investors.

For investments with shorter lease terms that an occupier could access within a year or so, warehouses are being sold on even tighter yields of 1.25 – 1.75% less that average investment yields depending on the tenancy duration.

RETAIL

Tenanted Retail is still attracting investors around the 5 – 5.5% Net range depending on the price point, type of tenant, term of lease and location. Strong retail locations including places like Manly, Dee Why and small suburban retail centres are performing well and still have interest with a wide array of investors. Historically the case has been a mixed bag for the owner-occupier market for retail. Some businesses are keen to secure themselves a position, but typically in smaller suburban retail centres whereas main retail centres are still dominated by investors and tenants.

OFFICES

For the smaller investors, offices were popular as they attracted buyers that couldn’t afford to get into the residential market. These were being sold at around 5% – 6% Net returns. The higher the yield of course, the greater the risk, and it has been slower on the leasing side for these properties in areas like Belrose, Frenchs Forest and Warriewood. However, strata office vacancy rates in Dee Why and Manly are at all time lows with a big uptake on space getting people out of bigger offices in the CBD and out from working at home.

THE OUTLOOK

Savvy vendors wishing to sell are seeing the benefits of listing now to reduce the amount of competition with potential for more listings coming on with interest rates still rising. It took a century for the Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club to blow the candles out on its 100th birthday – and it might take just as long to recover from the biggest party this much-loved venue has seen.

The “Skiffies” was tested on and off the water over the Summer months and came through with flying colours.

The Australian 13 & 16ft Skiff Championships in early January was a resounding success, with close to 100 boats facing the starter’s gun across the week.

After a week of “dirty’ weather leading into the event, competitors were greeted with near perfect sailing conditions. The heat was on from the get-go.

The 16-footers division, featuring National and State champions, Olympic gold medallists and America’s Cup sailors, was arguably the toughest national regatta in its 115 year history.

The title came down to the last race, and fittingly, it was a Manly entrant left standing on the top step of the podium after the most dramatic of finishes.

Typhoon, owned by club great, Craig Nicholls, and crewed by skipper Nathan Wilmot, Malcolm Page and Zac Barnabas, did a “Steven Bradbury”, coming from mid-fleet to pass stricken St George boat Noakes, which unluckily lost a rudder pin and unable to continue.

“The whole race we were just working as hard as we could thinking anything could happen,” Typhoon skipper, Nathan Wilmot, said.

“We got a bit lucky in the end, but that’s sailing for you. Our consistency throughout the regatta put us in a position to cash in.

“It’s great that we were able to keep the title here at Manly in the club’s 100th year.”

It proved a double celebration for the host club, with 13-footer siblings Jemma and James Hopkins blitzing their class aboard EBIX.

The Hopkins teenagers picked up four wins, three seconds, a third and a sixth in a variety of conditions to record one of the most emphatic wins in recent 13s history.

Jemma said, “We sailed Manly Juniors when I was five or six and that didn’t really work out because we argued a bit, but it’s all good now.

“We worked really well together all week. It’s great to win it for Manly.”

The pace was no less frantic inside the clubhouse as a host of events were rolled out to coincide with the Australian Championships.

There was an Old Buffer's Day for former sailors, Ladies Day celebrating the amazing feats of the club’s female contingent and a Junior's Day for the area’s best up-and-comers.

Huge numbers poured into the licensed club to watch the action from the deck and via Sail Media’s excellent live streaming service.

All this activities have flourished at a time when Manly was busy keeping one eye on “sister” club St George, which hit the ground running and was throbbing with visitors and vibrancy after opening in early Spring.

Manly’s season culminated in the official centenary anniversary party –celebrated exactly 100 hundred years to the day the club held its first race on February 25, 1923.

“There are not too many Northern Beaches institutions to have reached the century mark and to do so in such good health,” Northern Beaches Council Mayor, Michael Regan, said.

“Everyone knows the skiff club. It’s a place to bring visitors when you want to wow them or just to enjoy a couple of beers on that deck and watch the world go past on the world’s best harbour.

“The skiff club has also been home to thousands of sailors, some of whom have gone on to Olympic and International success or won State and National titles.

“I’m sure those 1923 pioneers would be proud of where the club sits a 100 years later.”

Secretary-manager, Matt Hazell, added, “It’s a tribute to our hard working staff and those involved with the sailing program that we were able to successfully pull off probably the busiest time in the club’s history.

“To host the National championships on top of all the 100 year celebrations and the opening of St George was a huge achievement. We now look forward to carrying that momentum into the Autumn and Winter months.” •

Here, Owner and Performance (Gold) Licence Coach of Olympians, Narelle Simpson, discusses the importance of prioritising all these elements, to help swimmers reach their ffull potential in the pool and open water.

Recovery, including proper nutrition and adequate rest, cannot be overstated when it comes to athletic training, particularly in a physically demanding sport like swimming.

The right nutrition is essential to maintain energy levels and support muscle recovery and sleep is critical for swimmers to recover and perform at their best. When we’re asleep, the body repairs and regenerates cells and getting enough sleep can also help swimmers avoid injury and illness.

Narelle understands the importance of good nutrition, sleep and recovery for all swimmers.

What role does recovery play in a swimmer’s performance and how do you incorporate it into your training program?

The most important part of any training is your recovery and that includes getting a good night’s sleep. If your body isn’t recovered, ready for the next training session, you cannot apply 100% to your training because your body isn’t ready. In turn, that can cause unnecessary risks. These risks can be pressure on your heart, muscles, ligaments and can over time manifest into injuries and health problems

How important is nutrition for swimmers, and what kind of dietary guidelines do you recommend for optimal performance?

Nutrition, like sleep, shares a very important part in enabling athletes to train and compete at their full potential, especially during prolonged events such as all day carnivals and open water events. To perform properly, your body needs the fuel and energy to complete

whatever event or training you are doing. If your body has no fuel, it is swimming in a depleted state and eats into your muscles to find energy. It is always good to consult a dietitian or nutritionist to ensure you are fuelling your body adequately, especially pre and post events including training.

Research has shown that there should be no screen time two to three hours before sleep. Mobiles, laptops and iPads need to be avoided at night. Everyone should aim for a minimum of seven to nine hours sleep depending on your age to allow your body time to recover. There are many studies that say if the body has completed some hard, intensive exercise for one to two hours, not only does it need sleep and great nutrition, but it also needs anything from 24 hours to 56 hours recovery time depending on age and muscle mass, before doing another intensive workout. Hence the importance of sleep, great nutrition, and hydration to achieve your goals. •

When she lost two of her best friends and her Mum in 2022, Soulhub Founder, Blythe Rowe, decided she had no time to waste. Inspired by her loss and her two beautiful daughters she created Soulhub Freshie, a vibrant new space built on wellness, community and love.

Located by the zebra crossing behind Harbord Kindergarten, a brand new vibe has been bubbling. Soulhub Freshie opened its doors on February 11, sparking a new destination for friendship and fitness. Unlike traditional gyms, Soulhub features luxe fit-outs and studios, a community kitchenette, infrared saunas and more – everything one needs to become a happier, healthier human. Beaches COVERED. caught up for a soulful chat with friendly Founder, Blythe.

Blythe, your studio is beautiful! What inspired you to open Soulhub Freshie?

I have always been passionate about my own fitness and wellbeing, but I never thought I‘d invest the time, energy or money into opening my own studio. I have zero experience in this field. My expertise is in people, culture and leadership, not in running a start-up wellbeing space. But last year the universe threw a lot of things my way which led me to opening Freshie’s newest, high-tech, luxe wellbeing space.

What was the turning point?

A franchise opportunity that I was invested in emotionally and financially didn’t pan out, creating two options for me. One, decide it wasn’t meant to be or two, bite the bullet and do it myself. My two teenage daughters said, “Mum, you know what you have to do”. Clearly, I took the latter option.

So we have your girls to thank for this!

Yes! My girls have been an integral part of this entire journey, from naming the business and branding ideas, to designing the space and assisting in daily operations. Teaching my girls business was a huge part of my motivation. Another factor was that in the space of three months last year, I lost two beautiful young friends as well as my biggest supporter, my Mum. This was the final catalyst I needed. We live once and life can be short. I wanted to create something really special; a space that would help inspire other people to live healthier and happier.

What classes and services do you offer to the community?

We have a variety of hubs so there’s something for everyone. Our two Soul Fitness Studios are high-tech, playful and cater for beginners to pilates junkies. We offer a variety of reformer classes from stretch, overall body sculpting and cardio-inspired amplified class plus barre and mat pilates. Our other hubs are dedicated to wellbeing. We have two large infrared saunas, LED light therapy for skin rejuvenation and zero gravity chair for relaxation, plus an automated spray tan machine.

But the real magic of Soulhub is our Soul Squad. Every single one of our Squad is dedicated to making our Soulmates’ visit the best part of their day.

Do you get many men working out at the studio?

Absolutely! One of our primary goals is to reframe the belief that pilates is just for chicks! Reformer improves core strength which helps with back issues and injuries. It’s also a great strategy to improve flexibility for tighter bodies, which men often need if they only focus on weight training.

You have recently launched a new teen program too!

Yes! As a mother of two beautiful teenage daughters, I am passionate about the health of all teenagers – physical and mental. There seems to be a growing trend with many teenagers to quit competitive sport, in their mid teens and undertake very little movement. The risk to a teenagers health, especially their mental health, is huge. We created a program specifically designed for teens to come together weekly in the school term to connect, move, laugh and have loads of fun in a safe, inclusive environment.

What can a client expect on their wellbeing journey at Soulhub Freshie?

The reason we get out of bed in the morning is to inspire healthier, happier humans! No two Soulmates’ experiences will be the same as everyone is on their own wellbeing journey. We are immensely proud we have created an environment where all souls, regardless of fitness or experience levels, feel like they can get value. Every one of our Soulmates should expect to feel a little bit healthier and happier when they leave. •

Jennifer Jones from Zing Fresh has a passion for creating visually stunning and delightful dishes. She knows no bounds when it comes to culinary innovation and has been exploring the frontiers of food for years. Beaches COVERED. sat down with her to talk about “free” food and find out about her interactive workshops and upcoming events which will win the hearts of everyone’s stomachs.

As 2023 kicks off, Jennifer is thrilled to continue creating with Zing Fresh. Based in the vibrant community of Brookvale, there are many opportunities to collaborate with other free-thinking and creative individuals who share her love of innovative culinary experiences.

“Over the years, I’ve reinvented myself several times, exploring different industries from health and fitness to interior styling. As an innovative caterer, I’ve combined my passions and pursuits to create deliciously memorable food experiences for my clients. For me, the ability to do what I love on my own terms has always been a driving force,” explains Jennifer.

The Creative Director loves to push boundaries, explore ideas, and express herself through original presentations.

“This creative freedom is what inspires me to constantly carve out creative culinary experiences and share them with my clients. I love nothing more than encouraging adventurous tastes and inspiring curiosity in those who try my culinary experiences,” says Jennifer.

Persian Pears

Honey Roasted Pears with Orange-Blossom Syrup and Yoghurt

Simple, quick and delicious dessert to make, we love this dish. It’s amazing to serve at functions and parties and also fantastic to complete a dinner at home.

Prep time: 10 mins

Cook: 35 mins

Serves: 10

INGREDIENTS

• 200 gm honey

• Juice and thinly peeled rind of 1 orange and 1 lemon

• 1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped

• 5 beurre bosc pears, unpeeled, halved and cores removed with a melon-baller

• 2 tsp orange-blossom water, or to taste

• Thick plain yoghurt, chopped pistachios and rose petals to serve

METHOD

Preheat your oven to 200°C.

Simmer honey, orange and lemon juices, rinds, vanilla bean and its seeds in a small saucepan over medium heat. Reduce to

a light syrup. This should take roughly 8-10 minutes.

Place pears, cut side up in a roasting pan, large enough to fit the pears snugly.

Pour the honey mixture over the pears and roast for 20 to 25 minutes, basting occasionally until tender and beginning to caramelise.

Remove pears from the roasting pan and place on your favourite serving plate. Drizzle the leftover orange-blossom syrup over the pears.

Dollop with thick yoghurt and scatter the chopped pistachios and rose petals.

The pears can be prepared ahead and gently warmed just before serving.

Happy Little Warriors

In a martial arts studio in the back of Brookvale, a tribe of local kids are learning the art of fitness, discipline and respect through kickboxing. Beaches COVERED. spoke to Founder, and local Dad-of-three, Mick McSevney, about his latest program, Little Warriors.

Fifteen months ago, the Little Warriors Training Program was born in Brookvale. Set up by local Dad, Mick McSevney, it’s a dynamic and fun kickboxing program for five to 12 year olds.

“There is definitely a focus on fitness, discipline and respect – all the typical benefits that come from martial arts,” says Mick.

With three kids of his own, Mick is no stranger to pre-teen energy.

“My eight and six year old boys were in the class, but they’ve had a change to their schedules this year with music and other activities. My three-year-old daughter though, she’s there every week,” he laughs.

The Warrior Training Academy is the home of Legacy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Northern Beaches and the Wimp 2 Warrior Program. It also offers kickboxing, MMA and functional fitness, and caters for beginners to the competitive athlete.

START’EM YOUNG!

Little Warriors is a great program that equips kids with self confidence, discipline, respect and an understanding of teamwork. While some parents may be concerned about sparring for the little ones, Mick says there is nothing to worry about.

“Something that has come up a lot when we speak to parents is punching,” he explains.

“A lot of parents get put off with punching, but there is no punching to the head. The kids have light padded contact and spar with each other, but there are definitely no head shots.”

The Little Warrior program runs in conjunction with the school term, and Mick says he is conscious that parents have plenty of costs when it comes to raising kids.

“For the parents, I don’t want to make it crazy expensive – that’s something I’m really conscious of. As for the kids, they really love the gradings!”

“We grade via T-shirt colour, and there are eight grades for them to progress through. They build up skills and each time they progress through a new grade, they get a different coloured shirt.”

As for the future, Mick is starting to consider a teen’s program.

“We believe martial arts is a tool to help guide you through life, and we want to help as many people as possible discover their path and assist them on their journey.” •

Collaroy Kitchen Centre’s designers, John and Helle Olsen, have once again demonstrated their design expertise with this stunning and highly functional kitchen.
