Company helps to bring innovative, selfcleaning systems in evaporators for customers in the Indian market. These evaporators do not require jet cleaning, thus saving time, reducing costs and maintenance while ensuring seamless production. The cleaning particles made of glass, ceramic or cut metal wire and with diameters varying from 1.5 to 4 mm create a scouring effect on the tube wall surface and removes developing of fouling layer at an early stage of formation. After passing through the heat exchanger, the cleaning particles are disengaged from the liquid in a specially designed separator and are returned to the inlet channel through an external down-comer and the cycle is repeated.

A Guide to Selecting and Configuring Portable Mixers Pumps may grab the headlines in industrial applications, but mixers are the leading technology for many critical mixing and blending tasks, provided they are configured and utilized properly.
P
umps are the acknowledged workhorses in industrial fluid-handling applications, capable of reliably, safely and consistently transferring thousands of gallons of varying commodities at a rate that helps plant operators satisfy the strict demands of challenging production schedules. However, there is another technology that, while not necessarily as highly regarded as the pump, plays a significant role in critical production and fluid-handling processes in industrial operations. This technology is known as the portable mixer, and properly designed and engineered mixers can provide the operator with many years of trouble-free service in a wide variety of blending or mixing operations. Indeed, while the pump’s main job is to facilitate the movement of fluids from Point A to Point B in the most efficient manner, mixers are more of a jack-of- all-trades that possess the ability to perform a number of important tasks, including blend fluids of varying viscosities, suspend or dissolve solids, disperse immiscible liquids (think water and oil), and disperse small amounts of gases in liquids. This makes
them ideal for use in a variety of different applications – from water and wastewater treatment to batch chemical preparation – and with a number of commodities with viscosities ranging from 1 to more than 25,000 centipoise (cPs), including paints, varnishes, polymers, textile dyes, pharmaceuticals, food products and soaps. But like any other piece of industrial equipment, portable mixers only operate at their highest level of efficiency, effectiveness and reliability if they are properly configured for the specific mixing or blending task. With that in mind, there are a number of operational variables that must be taken into consideration when choosing and implementing a mixer. This article will identify the variables that should be considered before choosing the mixer technology that will result in an optimized mixing or blending operation. Portable Mixer Categories Portable mixers can be separated into many categories with the main ones outlined below. • Style: The most common are lab and

pail, drum and tote, and light- and heavyduty mixers. Lab and pail mixers are very small and are most often used, as their name suggests, in labs for mixing in small vessels or industrial applications where a liquid product is provided in a pail. The most commonly used portable mixers in industrial operations are the drum and tote tank-mixer designs. Drum mixers are utilized with the 55-gallon drums in which many industrial chemicals are shipped. Tote (IBC containers) sizes can vary anywhere from 220 gallons to more than 500 gallons. Drums and tote tanks generally have a lid or top opening that have a bung connection or a larger opening. The mixer will require that a small fixed or folding prop be attached to the end of the mixer shaft so that it can be properly inserted into the drum or tote opening. Most models of portable mixers are either gear-driven with speeds of 350 or 420 revolutions per minute (rpm), or direct-drive, with speeds of 1,750 rpm. Most can be fitted with variable-speed drives or air motors that can provide variable speed, if needed. • Mounting: There are three main types of mounting configurations for non-drum or tote portable mixers. One is c-clamp, which normally has an adjustable angle of entry that is controlled by a ball-andsocket design. The angle riser provides a fixed 10-degree angle of entry into the mixing vessel and the flange mount to attach to the flange on the tank. Drum and tote mixers can be threaded into the bung opening in a drum or tote, c-clamped above the vessel, attached to the drum lip or have special brackets designed to mount on the tote or bulk tank. These brackets can be unattached when the mixing process is completed. • Props: There are three common models of portable mixer propellers that can be used: Square Pitch; 1.0 pitch, or marine prop, which is one of the most effective pumping devices; and Super Pitch, which has a 1.5 pitch that allows it to deliver higher pumping

4-inch square pitch prop at 1,750 rpm delivers a pumping rate of 250 gpm, a portable mixer could be selected. Keep in mind, however, that as liquid viscosity increases the pumping rate decreases. Mixer Positioning The goal of any portable mixer is to either blend, dissolve or disperse, and to do this in the most efficient manner. With that in mind, the position of the shaft and prop in the mixing container is a critical concern.
Many operational variables and characteristics must be considered before selecting a mixer. These include mixer type, fluid viscosity, rate of agitation, tank shape and volume, and pumping rate.
rates at the same diameter as Square Pitch, though it does require more horsepower to operate. Specialty Hydrofoil blades, which offer a more directed flow pattern, can also be advantageous for the user. • Shafts: The rule of thumb for portable mixers is to position the mixer propeller 1-2 propeller diameters from the bottom of the tank, which will determine shaft length. It is desirable to position the prop closer to the bottom of the tank (1 diameter) when mixing slurries or products with solids that have a tendency to settle out. Mixer Agitation Rate When sizing a portable mixer it is important to
know the degree of agitation required for the application. Mild agitation is normally 1/2 to 1 tank turnover per minute, medium agitation is 1-1/2 to 2 tank turns per minute, vigorous agitation is 2-1/2 to 3 turns per minute and violent mixing has tank-turnover rates of more than 3 turns per minute. The prop’s pumping rate is available from mixer manufacturers for each mixer model type and size at the various rpms at which they will operate, and is normally measured in the gallon-per-minute (gpm) pumping rate of water. Sizing and selecting a mixer can be easily done with this information. For example, a 100-gallon tank of a water-like chemical requires vigorous agitation, or 2-1/2 turnovers. Knowing that a
Angling the portable mixer off-center is the recommended position when rapid turnover of the tank contents with good bottom washing is needed.
10 | June-July 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
In most mixing applications involving small cylindrical tanks of 1,000 gallons or less, the mixer is clamped to the side of the container. Effective mixing patterns will be achieved if the mixer is angled 10 to 15 degrees away from the vertical, either off-center or oncenter. Angling the mixer 15 to 20 degrees off of the tank’s centerline is preferred when good material turnover is required, as when mixing a slurry. On-center angling is better for gentler mixing and creates a vortex. Vortexing occurs when the contents of the tank swirl around the walls of the tank without much top-to-bottom turnover; this creates a lessefficient mixing operation and the possibility of uneven mixing or blending. Cylindrical tanks with capacities of more than 1,000 gallons may require that the mixer be mounted directly in the center of the tank with the shaft in a vertical orientation. In this configuration, it is recommended that the operator put baffles on the walls of the tank in order to prevent the contents of the tank from turning in the direction of the mix, or creating an inefficient vortex. When this occurs, the mixing action in the tank will be poor. It is suggested that four baffles be used in this situation with them placed 90 degrees
On-center mixer angling will produce good blending with minimum vortex creation, resulting in gentle but thorough tank turnover
When mixing in larger tanks, the mixer should be positioned vertically and on-center. In this configuration, the attachment of baffles to the tank walls is recommended in order to prevent the tank’s contents from rotating and creating the vortexing that will hamper proper top-to-bottom turnover.
apart on the walls of the container and sized approximately 1/12 th of the tank’s diameter. The baffle should not fully extend to the bottom of the tank and a noticeable gap, usually 1/2 to 1-inch in size, should be left between the baffles and the tank walls if solids are present or for viscosities over 500 cPs to prevent a buildup where the baffle connects to the tank wall. If baffles are required in a square or rectangular tank, they should be placed at the midpoint of each of the four walls, with the same sizing and positioning parameters for baffles that are placed in circular tanks acknowledged. Be advised, though, that the presence of vortexing during the mixing or blending process is not always detrimental. For example, creation of a vortex is desirable when solids or powders are added to the top of the batch, or liquids need to be drawn rapidly into the batch.
Another consideration in the realm of vortexing may be the need to use two props on the shaft. Since it may be difficult to create a vortex in a baffled tank, a solution can be to use dual props. In this case, one prop is placed at the top of the shaft, near the surface of the liquid, while the second is located in its traditional position at the bottom of the shaft. This configuration can produce the vortex that is required to draw in powder or liquid materials, even in a baffled tank. In general, dual props will also be required in any container whose height is greater than 1.5 times its diameter. In this case, the props should be located at least two prop diameters apart and the upper prop should be submerged at least two prop diameters below the fluid surface to ensure good mixing. Keep in mind, though, that when determining mixing rate that dual props do not produce twice the flow of single props. This is because a mixer with dual props of the same diameter has a higher head capacity and will produce an increase of flow of around 20% (dependent on propeller spacing), but will require an 80% increase in power to create that increased flow.
information in mind when selecting the perfect mixer for the specific fluid type:
Conclusion Pumps may get the glory in industrial manufacturing or fluid-handling applications, but portable mixers can play an undeniably significant role in optimizing the effectiveness of the entire production operation. As with any technology, knowing the do’s and don’ts of mixer selection and operation, as well as the handling characteristics of the fluid to be mixed or blended, will play a major role in selecting the technology that is perfectly suited for the specific operation. ◘
Fluid Type The mixer type and related components can only be chosen when the viscosities of the fluids to be mixed or blended are known. Operators should keep the following

Powder Dryer End-Point Detection for Aqueous and Solvent-based Drying Process mass spectrometer and laser-Biode analyzer pinpoint when a product has dried as much as possible
A
METEK Process Instruments offers powder manufacturers across a variety of industries a system for continuous, real-time monitoring and control of the powder drying process, whether it is aqueous- or solvent-based. For years, drug manufacturers have relied on AMETEK ProMaxion mass spectrometers to monitor their pharmaceutical solvent drying processes. Better suited for aqueousbased systems is AMETEK’s 5100 analyzer, which utilizes advanced tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopic technology to quickly and accurately measure water vapour concentrations during the drying process. Manufacturers across industries currently rely on a combination of approaches involving heat, pressure and vacuum to remove water and solvents from their products. The mostcommon methods require that the process be stopped and a sample removed for Loss of Drying (LOD) or Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis. This time-consuming process must be repeated until the LOD achieves a predetermined value. On-line, real-time detection avoids the need to stop, analyze and then restart the drying process. Large-scale drying operations involving thousands of pounds of product

can take upwards of 24 hours or more to complete. The repeated interruption of that process to accommodate manual analysis can add hours. In addition, many of the solvents used are flammable or pose other hazards, so there are added risks to manual analysis as well. AMETEK’s on-line, real-time solution affords manufacturers the ability to pinpoint, without operator intervention, the exact moment when a product has dried as much as possible. It works by monitoring moisture and solvent vapours in the dryer exhaust line. The amount measured is directly proportional to the amount remaining in the product. In addition, data from the ProMaxion and 5100 can be used to better understand the drying process. Common off-line tests measure only the final LOD and provide little detail about internal processes. The ProMaxion and 5100 not only provide the data needed to confirm dryness at the end point but can be used to control all aspects of the drying cycle from product entry to removal. The ProMaxion process mass spectrometer from AMETEK Process Instruments provides fast on-line monitoring of Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs) with a reliable, easy-touse instrument. It comes equipped with a membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS) that provides data at 10 to 15 seconds per sample stream and is between 10 and 50 times faster than most gas chromatography methods that require separation prior to analysis. Mass spectrometry offers direct quantification of the species of interest, as well as a total reading. A single mass ion can be chosen specific to each compound and these masses can be continuously monitored. If a total concentration is required, the mass spectrometer can survey all VOCs, total them within the software, and output real-time concentration. This technique also avoids sounding false alarms. AMETEK is experienced in designing complete systems with the ability to automatically control single or multiple dryers. The ProMaxion has multiple sample inlets, so a single unit can monitor multiple dryers, with each assigned its own individual configuration. The analyzer comes packaged in an explosion-proof housing and is certified Class I, Div. 1 for hazardous environments. The analyzer can periodically scan for mass intensities across the operating range and

TDLAS has three key attributes that have contributed to its success. They are excellent specificity, high sensitivity and fast response speed. Tunable diode lasers have emission bandwidths that are on the order of 10-4 to 10-5 cm-1. That allows them to achieve extremely high spectral resolutions, such that a TDLAS analyzer can isolate a particular analyte species from a single rotational-vibrational transition. In addition, analyzer’s laser can be tuned rapidly, making it easy to implement such techniques as wavelength modulation spectroscopy, which yields dramatic enhancements to sensitivity over a direct absorption approach. And, because the TDLAS is a non-contact optical technique, it offers very fast response speeds, which can mean substantial savings in both time and cost for such applications as powder drying among others.
AMETEK Process Instruments has broadened its line of 5100 Series gas analysers to include a portable version. The Model 5100P provides simple, easy-to-use moisture analysis using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). The durable, lightweight natural gas analyser is the tool-of-choice for users needing to perform water vapour measurements in remote locations or to verify fixed analyser installations.
The ProMaxion draws on AMETEK’s more than 30 years of experience in mass spectrometer design and manufacture and the 5100 more than 40 years of experience in the design and development of sophisticated process analyzers. AMETEK offers the industry’s most extensive product line, offering analyzers based upon eleven differentiated technology platforms. Prevent Endemic Waste in the Water Sector TALIS publishes new report to help company’s better meet their most challenging needs. A new report has been launched to help companies prevent endemic waste in the water sector, as poor buying decisions are causing issues and costing them increased operating expenses.
T
ALIS, one of the world’s leading providers of water flow control solutions, is acting to help prevent endemic waste in the water sector, stemming from what it believes is a failure to make the best buying decisions for non-standard applications. In its report ‘Going Beyond the Catalogue’, TALIS highlights a 5-point plan to create more intelligent design, specification and procurement processes. It details the ways in which poor decisions are causing costs to rise, using the example of mechanical joints to help illustrate its case. In particular, it cites a need for water companies, suppliers and manufacturers to work more closely to share expertise and capabilities, and for suppliers to show a willingness to be flexible, providing
bespoke and innovative solutions which will offer tangible benefits. Hervé Dumont, Product Strategy Director at Talis, says: “Conversations that end at price and delivery dates are never going to be enough to meet the complex needs that can arise when dealing with water networks. “There needs to always be the option to put the catalogue aside and talk about better, bespoke solutions where these can reduce costs or increase efficiencies. “When the partnership between customer and supplier is working perfectly, standard needs should be business as usual, leaving time and focus for nonstandard needs to be the areas where customers and suppliers can work closely to explore the ‘art of the possible’, working to co-design solutions that will
save time, money and resources. “This is something we encourage all our customers to do, working with the experts across our group to look at specially engineered solutions where required.” Within its 5-point plan, TALIS encourages water companies to ask themselves some key questions when they have to look beyond the standard solutions. Hervé Dumont comments: “One area in particular that water companies should focus on is to invest time in understanding key factors in the manufacture of components, to help customers improve their design and specification processes. “For example, in the case of mechanical joints for challenging applications, fabricated joints made from steel components are often the only solution. These can be manufactured to operate at large diameters (up to DN 2800) and high pressures up to 100 / 150 bar). “However, to achieve these standards and still work effectively, it is crucial that components are manufactured using best practice techniques such as cold expansion, flash butt welding and using vulcanized rubber gaskets. “By developing an understanding of such techniques, water companies can make better-informed decisions that ultimately will save time, money and energy across the running of their networks.” ◘

How can advanced technology make manufacturing companies more competitive? As pressure builds to provide increasingly customized products, companies are investing in simulation, additive manufacturing, autonomous robots, and the data analytics that are needed to capture and make sense of the information these systems generate. The article by Rajesh Angadi, Program Manager at Cisco Systems related to Data Science, IoT, Big Data Analytics and Agile Product Development explains to us how tomorrow’s production centers will produce – and benefit from – inexhaustible streams of information. Essentially artificial intelligence-driven selforganizing Internets-of-Things, they will operate holistically and flexibly, allowing their human workers, robot assistants and additive and subtractive manufacturing systems to optimize flows of materials and energy.

ndustry 4.0 is for the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing. Industry 4.0 is commonly referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 creates what has been called a “smart factory”. Within the modular structured smart factories, cyber-physical systems monitor physical processes, create a virtual copy of the physical world and make decentralized decisions. Over the Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems communicate and cooperate with each other and with humans in real-time both internally and across organizational services offered and used by participants of the value chain. First came steam and the first machines that mechanized some of the work our ancestors did. Next was electricity, the assembly line and the birth of mass production. The third era of industry came about with the advent of computers and the beginnings of automation, when robots and machines began to replace human workers on those assembly lines. And now we enter Industry 4.0, in which computers and automation will come together in an entirely new way, with robotics connected remotely to computer systems equipped with machine learning algorithms that can learn and control the robotics with very little input from human operators. For a factory or system to be considered Industry 4.0, it must include:
Interoperability-machines, devices, sensors and people that connect and communicate with one another. Information transparency -the systems create a virtual copy of the physical world through sensor data in order to contextualize information. Technical assistance-both the ability of the systems to support humans in making decisions and solving problems and the ability to assist humans with tasks that are too difficult or unsafe for humans. Decentralized decision-making ability of cyber-physical systems to make simple decisions on their own and become as autonomous as possible. Industry 4.0 roadmap visualizes every further step on the route towards an entirely digital enterprise. In order to achieve success in the digital transformation process, it is necessary to prepare the technology roadmap in the most accurate way. In today’s business, Industry 4.0 is driven by digital transformation in vertical/horizontal value chains and product/service offerings of the companies. The required key technologies for Industry 4.0 transformation such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, machine learning, cloud systems, cyber security, adaptive robotics cause radical changes in the business processes of organizations. Manufacturing organizations are able to accumulate large amounts of plant floor production and environmental data due to advances in data collection, communications technology, and use of standards. The challenge has shifted from collecting a sufficient amount of data to analyzing and
making decisions based on the huge amount of data available. Data analytics (DA) can help understand and gain insights from the big data and in turn help advance towards the vision of smart manufacturing. Modeling and simulation have been used by manufacturers to analyze their operations and support decision making. Manufacturing has always had Big Data. We have been collecting data with historians, MES (Manufacturing Execution systems) for decades. It is just a new buzz word for the marketers. Manufacturing is an untapped market for Big Data. There is lots of data, lots of different types of data, and hardly any of it is being used for analysis today. It is not uncommon in manufacturing to hear of Smart Connected Assets like jet engines producing petabytes of data each flight or Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) collecting millions of process variable measurements from the plant each shift; however, running reports on large data sets does not qualify as Big Data analytics in manufacturing. Smart manufacturing system requires capabilities and technologies for designing and improving the overall system performance through diagnostic and prognostic assessment based on (big) data analytics. The right insight derived from big data could lead to right actions for enhancing sustainability, productivity, flexibility, and competitive advantages and enabling sustainable and agile manufacturing. modeling for Smart Manufacturing Systems. An initial set of topics includes (but is not limited to) manufacturing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Methods, Technologies, and IT Infrastructure for Big Data and Data Analytics; Standards and Protocols; and Business Best Practices for Smart Manufacturing Systems. Manufacturers have been collecting and storing data for years, but now big data technologies enable more constructive use of this information, including how to increase throughput, boost yields, improve efficiency, and reduce downtime. Big data is characterized by huge data sets and varied data types (e.g., images, text, and machine log files), which the production line is producing at a much faster rate than ever before. When this data is analyzed using new tools available in the market, manufacturers can gain valuable insights derived from finding patterns, extracting meaning, and ultimately making decisions that lead to greater efficiency. Big data analytics, Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are the substantive foundation that enables advanced levels of smart manufacturing performance. That’s why companies are working hard to drive a data revolution in smart manufacturing that will yield new productivity and efficiency gains. IoT Solution Blueprint is easier than ever to learn how big data analytics applied to factory equipment and sensors can bring operational efficiencies and cost savings to manufacturing automation processes. However, many machine tools operate in relative silos, so it is a major challenge to collect, analyze, and act on data generated across the factory floor. This is why companies have assembled various Cloud, Internet of Things and big data technologies that provide the connectivity, security, interoperability, and analytics capabilities that enable higher-performance manufacturing automation. Big Data Analytics in manufacturing is about using a common data model to combine structured business system data like inventory transactions and financial transactions with structured operational system data like alarms, process parameters, and quality events, with unstructured internal and external data like customer, supplier, Web, and machine data to uncover 16 | June-July 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
new insights through advanced analytical tools. This definition of Big Data Analytics differs from the traditional approach most manufacturers and vendors have taken to dealing with manufacturing data. In most cases, manufacturers have invested heavily in data collection and visibility, mainly through legacy MES, EMI (Enterprise Manufacturing Intelligence), and Data Historians. Big Data analytics promise is all about plucking insights, knowledge and trends from deep reservoirs of raw data. But the reality is that massive troves of data are difficult for commercial and institutional computer systems to collect, sort, manage and analyze in a cost effective and speedy way. Curating and “cleaning” data to improve quality requires access to powerful computing power. Data analytics infrastructures entail complex techniques such as machine learning, visualization and cloud computing - to name a few. Businesses, government and other organizations looking to big data analytics to gain insights and solve challenges typically do not have the core competencies required to process and analyze giant databases.PARC, a Xerox company, (R&D services), Cisco (Networking and IT leader), Hitachi Data Systems (big data storage) and Quantiply (enterprise architecture) have created the Big Data Foundry (BDF) that pools together experts in software and hardware who can help enterprise harness data in a more powerful and efficient manner. The foundry offers a Big Data Rapid Experimentation Platform made up of readily available technology and an “algorithmic toolbox” designed to accelerate experimentation and reduce risk. Much of this machine intelligence is symbolic and heuristic. Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines. In computer science, an ideal “intelligent” machine is a flexible rational agent that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is applied when a machine mimics “cognitive” functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as “learning” and “problem solving.AI research is divided into subfields that focus on specific problems or on specific approaches or on the use of a particular tool or towards satisfying particular applications. The central problems (or goals) of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, natural language processing (communication), perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects. Approaches include statistical methods, computational intelligence, soft computing (e.g. machine learning), and traditional symbolic AI. Many tools are used in AI, including versions of search and mathematical optimization, logic, methods based on probability and economics. The AI field draws upon computer science, mathematics, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience and artificial psychology. Demands towards Smart Manufacturing Systems in an enterprise are as follows: • A possibility of collecting and processing different types of information from all sources, both internal and external, in order to acquire and model knowledge necessary to make decisions at all levels of decision process in an enterprise. At the same time a possibility of modeling knowledge and processes, based on human thinking, is required. • In a decision process, at decision selecting,
the decision maker’s subjective evaluation based on his experience and intuition should be taken into account in IMS. • There should be a possibility of preliminary information handling and analysis with analytical methods as well as modern artificial intelligence technologies. • A possibility of detecting emergency and critical situations and of prompt reaction to them. There must be a possibility of situational data analysis in real time, necessary in an emergency inside the production system or in its surroundings. • A possibility to allow for complexity and comprehensiveness of decision-making issues in strategic management support. • Taking into account the lack of stability and change dynamics, both in the surroundings and inside the enterprise, the IMSs under design should have the capability for learning from experience and adapting the experience to intensive alteration of working conditions. • In intelligent manufacturing systems, the following selected contemporary methods and techniques of knowledge and decision process modeling should be integrated: • Artificial neural networks – the most fascinating tool of artificial intelligence, capable of modeling extremely complex functions and, to some extent, copying the learning activity in the human brain. • Fuzzy logic – technologies and methods of natural language formalization, linguistic and quality knowledge processing and fuzzification. • Genetic algorithms and methods of evolutionary modeling – learning algorithms based on theoretical achievements of the theory of evolution, enriching the artificial intelligence techniques. The combination of these tools, in which knowledge is represented symbolically, with the traditional expert system will make it possible to create complex programmatic tools for solving difficult decision-making problems at each stage of enterprise functioning. software algorithm looks at feedback from a situation, then actuates the decision (closedloop control) without human consultation, or the software recommends a course of action with human consultation (open-loop control). Control engineering or control systems engineering is the engineering discipline that applies control theory to design systems with desired behaviors. The practice uses sensors to measure the output performance of the device being controlled and those measurements can be used to give feedback to the input actuators that can make corrections toward desired performance. Control engineering is the engineering discipline that focuses on the modeling of a diverse range of dynamic systems (e.g. mechanical systems) and the design of controllers that will cause these systems to behave in the desired manner. Although such controllers need not be electrical like many are and hence control engineering is often viewed as a subfield of electrical engineering. There are two major divisions in control theory, namely, classical and modern, which have direct implications over the control engineering applications. The scope of classical control theory is limited to single-input and single-output (SISO) system design, except when analyzing for disturbance rejection using a second input. The system analysis is carried out in the time domain using differential equations, in the complex-s domain with the Laplace transform while modern control theory is carried out in the state space, and can deal with multipleinput and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This overcomes the limitations of classical control theory in more sophisticated design problems. Control engineering was all about continuous systems. Development of computer control tools posed a requirement of discrete control system engineering because the communications between the computer-based digital controller and the physical system are governed by a computer clock. The equivalent to Laplace transform in the discrete domain is the Z-transform. Today, many of the control systems are computer controlled and they consist of both digital and analog components. Therefore, at the design stage either digital components are mapped into the continuous 18 | June-July 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
domain and the design is carried out in the continuous domain, or analog components are mapped into discrete domain and design is carried out there. In manufacturing, a machine running a webbased process may have similar situational awareness. There may be a perfectly good reason to leave the machine running when the last material runs through the rollers and an operator is standing in a certain location. If the machine is unattended at that particular moment, embedded code may begin an orderly shutdown as the best response. Control Engineering relates to the next big thing (TNBT) which is the second generation of smartphones, which have the software capacity to provide situational awareness. TNBT devices will be able to recognize what is going on inside your area or site and determine when something is out of normal but not yet in alarm. Information for this awareness may come from traditional fixed sensors or even by listening for sound patterns such as hisses, whistles, clangs, and bangs. TNBT devices will become true operator assistants; always watching and always listening for out-ofnormal conditions or for events that require manual intervention. Seven Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have proved to be useful with sensor systems (part of IoT’s): Knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic, automatic knowledge acquisition, neural networks, genetic algorithms, casebased reasoning, and ambient-intelligence. Applications of these tools within sensor systems have become more widespread due to the power and affordability of presentday computers. The appropriate deployment of the new AI tools will contribute to the creation of more competitive sensor systems and applications. Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps computing in four ways: 1. Natural language understanding to improve communication. 2. Machine reasoning to provide inference, theorem-proving, cooperation, and relevant solutions. 3. Knowledge representation for perception, path planning, modeling, and problem solving. 4. Knowledge acquisition using sensors to learn automatically for navigation and problem solving.
5. Artificial intelligence’s ability to function as a safety measure and provide another set of eyes, so to speak, can be extremely beneficial to worker safety in manufacturing. It can also enhance our ability to understand what’s happening around us and offer solutions that might not be readily available.
Will artificial intelligence (AI) take control of human race during Smart Manufacturing? The answer to this question seems to be positive. Several experts of AI have similar comment as “everything that humans can do machines can do”. Stephen Hawking also warned us during an interview with BBC that “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Ex Machina, a recent enthralling science-fiction film presents the possibility of a robot that has cognitive capability to think, feel and even manipulate human beings. Self-driving cars, Siri on your iPhone, weather forecasts, face recognition on your Facebook photos, etc are all examples. A Japanese company with Deep Knowledge found out an Artificial Intelligence (AI) as one of the directors due to its ability to predict market trend that is “not immediately obvious to humans”. Replacing human with robot in manufacturing is a trend that we can’t stop or avoid. As technology advances, the low cost, high-accuracy and efficiency of robot is going to benefit the human society as a whole on a broader level. ◘

t is considered indestructible and when it comes down to it, it saves human lives. The fire hose is one of the most important tools in the fire department’s arsenal. It is deployed roughly 3.5 million times per year in Germany alone – the fire hose is always on the scene. From burning garbage cans to apartment fires to fires that spread to entire houses or industrial warehouses: Situations like these are often dangerous and demand a high level of safety – for both persons affected and the fire department’s emergency personnel. This is why, when it comes down to it, fire fighters have to be able to fully rely on their technical aids. Daily Duty Requirements for fire hoses are appropriately high. Ultimately, they are
not only exposed to a range of hazardous factors during use, such as heat or aggressive substances, but also have to withstand both extreme water pressure and remain flexible at the same time. Another factor is the ground that the fire hose is pulled across – regardless of whether it is plain asphalt or a carpet of broken glass. It must withstand all of this no matter the situation.
hoses have to withstand is specified in fire hose regulation DIN 14811. The minimum bursting pressure – ie, the maximum pressure that a hose has to withstand before it bursts – is 60 bars. This is the equivalent to thirty times the pressure of a car tyre. However, this is far from the reality of the scene of action. Usually, fire fighters use water pressure of between five and eight bars to extinguish fires.
In order for emergency personnel to be equipped for any situation, there is a total of about 20 fire hoses on board a fire engine, in various sizes: from narrow hoses with a diameter of 25 millimeters for small fires up to hoses with a diameter of 75 millimeters that are used during major fires. The water pressure that these
Long Live Rubber A fire hose can serve for up to 20 years – depending on the intensity of use and the strain that it is subjected to. Producers ensure this long lifetime by adding chemicals. These chemicals are put into action during rubber processing, at the end

A Shield Made of Polyester Threads Flames, extreme heat, chemicals and high water pressure: In order to withstand all of the strain that it is subjected to, a shell made out of different, tearresistant polyester threads protects the interior rubber hose. This prevents the hose from stretching out like a balloon and rupturing when it is being filled with water. The wafer-thin threads, which are mechanically plaited into thick strands, are wrapped around the rubber hose like a shield. This means that the fire hose remains flexible, but cannot stretch out too widely. Then, during vulcanization, the rubber hose and polyester shell are adhered together using heat and pressure. Here too LANXESS products are used. The Vulkacit vulcanization accelerator can significantly shorten the length of this process – depending on the temperature, by roughly 50 minutes. Safety in Schools and in Public Buildings It is not just firefighters who have to be able to rely on technology in the event of a fire. In public buildings and schools, the tools that are used during first aid must function without a hitch in case of fire. This includes the tubing in permanent wall fire hydrants. The hoses contained in these hydrants usually just consist of a number of layers of rubber and are not protected from external influences by a polyester shield. Anti-degradants such as Vulkanox are all the more important here too, as they ensure longevity and the best performance – where it counts. ◘

of which a rubber tube and thus the inner workings of the fire hose emerge. Antidegradants in the rubber, for instance, make the hose resistant to oxygen and ozone and make sure that it does not become porous or cracked. For instance, products by LANXESS such as Vulkanox or Vulkazon can be deployed. “Oxygen, heat, ozone, UV rays, certain rubber toxins and daily use can damage rubber in the long run,” Melanie Wiedemeier20 | June-July 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
Jarad, Technician in LANXESS’ Advanced Industrial Intermediates division, explains. “Our products can delay this process.” The deciding factor in this regard is the chemical structure of the materials. “There is no one product that is universally effective,” Wiedemeier-Jarad continues. “Our products can be effective against just one or a number of aging processes.” A spectrum that is reflected in the broad range of LANXESS anti-degradants.

ryers and ovens in the chemical processing industry, and many other industries, come in all shapes and sizes. This makes it difficult to insulate them uniformly, causing energy waste, which increases the manufacturing cost of the products. Large batch or conveyor industrial ovens and dryers often have openings that make it impossible to wrap them with an insulation that requires an aluminium covering. Rotating dryers are another
piece of equipment that is very hard to insulate with older materials due to the constant motion. Many plant and facility managers are working hard to keep production running smoothly and to hit corporate goals, so they may not be aware of some of the innovative insulation technologies that have been introduced this Century. Thermal insulation coatings (TICs) are the future of effective, durable, and “fit everything” insulation. Advantages
that TICs have over older 20 th Century technology include: • Easy to spray on to any size or shape equipment • Can be applied while equipment is in service • Can be used on ends of rotating dryers without interfering with the process • Are durable in factory and outdoor environments • Do not require exterior covering • Last for 5 to 10 years or more with no maintenance needed • Can be sprayed around openings in dryers and ovens • Do not cause corrosion In this article, we will highlight two case studies for thermal insulation coatings on dryers/ovens to give you an idea of what is possible with this innovative technology. Insulation of Rotating Drying Cans in Denim Industry When a denim manufacturing company in Turkey contacted energy efficiency expert, Kolorgen Ltd, they had an interesting challenge. They had never been able to insulate their rotating drying cans to save energy. This was due to the limited amount of space and the constant rotation during the manufacturing process. Traditional materials like fiberglass, mineral wool or foam were not suitable to use because they would interfere with the equipment process. They were introduced to Synavax patented thin film thermal insulation technology and decided to try on the ends of the rotating dryer cans.
Boiler safe touch.
Their steam temperature was 160 oC (320oF) and they were losing a lot of heat energy due to the lack of insulation. The denim factory used Heat Shield High Heat, a TIC that can be used up to 204 oC (400 oF). The coating allowed an easy spray-on Chemical Products Finder | June-July 2018 | 21

application that did not interfere with the rotation of the drying can assembly. They were pleased with the savings and grateful to have finally found a solution for energy savings on this equipment. This manufacturing client achieved: (see Table 1) Rubber Manufacturer Chooses Heavy Duty Thermal Insulation Coating A rubber manufacturer in South-East Asia was looking for a better solution for insulating their conveyor drying ovens which had bare aluminium panel walls. Their goal was to reduce their energy consumption and use a product that would last longer than mineral wool and would be maintenance-free for at least 10 years.
Table1: Daily Energy Savings of 2,000 kg (2.2 tons) steam Overall Energy Savings of 10% Before Thermal Insulation Coating Energy Consumption
Two coats were specified for their project since their equipment operated at a lower temperature range. This provided an estimated temperature reduction from 50 oC (122 oF) down to 138 oC (100 oF), with a calculated expected energy savings of 40.03 BTU/h.ft 2. Due to the performance of the product, the estimated payback on their project was less than one year and the product has a 10 year warranty. This case study illustrates the value of newer technologies, which may at face value seem more expensive, but offer a better payback and ongoing return on investment that weaker insulation materials cannot match.

square meter or square foot with a TIC, it may seem like you are saving money by staying with the older technology. But that is missing the longevity factor and other cost savings provided by thermal insulation coatings.
They chose a chemical-resistant TIC by Synavax called Heat Shield EPX-H2O. This two-part heavy-duty product has the benefit of a fast cure time (in just 4872 hours‌ shorter if coated on to a hot surface).
Understanding the Value Benefit of Innovative Energy Saving Coatings Not fully understanding the shortterm payback and ongoing return on investment of innovative TICs keeps many organizations at a disadvantage because they stay with outdated materials instead of realizing the cost saving benefits of these innovative materials. If you take fiberglass or mineral wool with cladding and compare just the cost per
After Thermal Insulation Coating
For example, an application of a rust control coating, 4 cm mineral wool, and aluminium cladding, may cost about $3.06 USD per SF, a coverage of 4 layers (0.1 cm) of the Heat Shield EPX-H2O coating would be about $3.68 USD per

SF and could provide a similar thermal insulating benefit. A typical lifespan for the mineral wool application is 1-2 years before it begins degrading and causes corrosion of the surface. The TIC is warranted for 10 years (no maintenance needed). So if you look at only product replacement over 10 years, the TIC comes out costing much less. If you choose to leave the mineral wool in place for 5 years or more, there is going to be a significant loss of energy saving benefit, and you will most likely be dealing with corrosion under insulation (CUI) caused by the product. Thermal insulation coatings are designed to also prevent corrosion, which improves asset integrity and decreases costly repairs. Even replacing the mineral wool at 5 years, the TIC comes out ahead with a cost saving of $2.44 USD per SF. Considerations When Deciding on a TIC Technology There are a few things you’ll want to take into consideration when choosing a TIC to use in your facility: 1) They are not designed for submerged service, so you cannot use them internally on equipment where they would be in direct contact with liquids. 2) There are smooth finish and pebbled
surface options, each has its pros and cons. For example, the smooth finish TIC is thinner and takes more layers to achieve similar results than the other. The pebbled finish product has additional splash resistance to chemicals, but will need a coat of the smooth finish coating for UV protection outside.

working
Conclusion Organizations dealing with heat loss from dryers, ovens and other heat process equipment can find 21 st Century solutions in thermal insulation coatings designed to conform to any shape of surface and can even be used on rotating equipment while providing energy savings and surface protection benefits. While TICs may have been thought of as “new” several years ago, today they have nearly 15 years of operational experience in a wide variety of industries and applications behind them and have proven themselves to be effective and versatile. ◘
3) The coatings are easy to apply, so you may choose to use your own maintenance team and request online video training from the manufacturer. 4) TICs are typically water-based and non-toxic. 5) If you plan to do thermal testing, use surface contact thermometers, not laser/infrared. Laser thermometers can give false readings over light, uneven, or reflective surfaces. Direct surface contact thermometers are more accurate. 6) TICs can typically only be used on surfaces up to 204 oC/400 oF maximum. Additional Benefits Innovation often brings more benefits to a product and this is especially true with thermal insulation coatings. They combine several advantages into a single product to further increase their value to the user. Some of the additional benefits include: • Energy savings

MULTI-TUBE FILTER Subodh multi-tube filter consists of elements made up of multi-tubes and dressed with seamless filter hoses to obtain clear filtrate. The number of elements housed in a pressure vessel on tube sheets and various registers are externally fitted to avoid complexity and corrosion due to deposition of solids on pipes if located inside the vessel. Pressure vessel designed under ASME Code filtration is done with moderate pump pressure and initial circulation of slurry to obtain the clear filtrate. As soon as the filtrate is clear the clear liquid is collected in the receiver. Soon the slurry exhausts in the tank, pumping is stopped and compressed nitrogen supply is restored in the filter vessel which filters the hold up till the end; the heel volume is filtered through single cartridge sintered metal filter fixed in inlet line. In order to effectively discharge the cake in solid form the deposited cake is further blown with compressed nitrogen and dried to permissible limit. Special system is designed to collect the solids in closed bin through chute fixed with cloth sleeve to dissipate the clean air while solids are received by the bin. Special actuated butterfly valve is fixed at the drain point. In case of catalysts applications the same candles after drying the cake is back-flushed with clean liquid being hydrogenated in subsequent batch so that entire catalyst is re-slurried and collected in the reactor. CARBOXY METHYL STARCH
The plate pack assembly consists of plates with interlocking cups, plate rings, perforated screens and filter media. Interlocking cups arranged one above other forms single pipeline. The unfiltered liquid is centrally fed under pressure from bottom inlet. The liquid spreads out equally on each plate fitted with filter media. Solids remain on the filter media and clear filtrate flows through gaps on the supporting ring and collects in the shell, which is led out through outlet pipeline. In this process, solids are evenly distributed on each plate. At the end of the cycle the cake can be dried maximum by applying air or inert gas.

MEMBRANE CONTACTORS Liqui-Cel membrane contactors are offered by Membrana, USA, makers of liquid degasification contactors. Liqui-Cel membrane contactors are widely used for removal of dissolved gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and ammonia in aqueous solution. Membrane contactors are typically shell-and-tube device containing microporous hydrophobic, hollow fibres. The MoC of hollow-fibre is polypropylene having internal dia 200-220 microns, outer dia 300 microns and having an average pore size of 0.03 microns. Water is passed on outside of the membrane (shell side) and a gas is passed inside of the membrane (lumen side). Since the membrane is manufactured using a hydrophobic material and the pores are small, water does not easily pass through the pores. The membrane essentially acts as a support between the gas and liquid phases and allows them to interface at the pores. Gases, however, freely pass through the pores on a molecular level, sweep gas as air or nitrogen and either/or vacuum is applied inside the fiber which results in reducing the partial pressure of the gas to be removed. The water leaving the membrane contactor will be degassed. It finds application in boiler feed water (oxygen removal); pharma (carbon dioxide removal); removal of non-condensable gases in pure steam generator; power and microelectronics (oxygen and carbon dioxide removal); beverage (carbon dioxide injection and oxygen removal); humidification of gases in pharma and process industries; and printing (degassing of inks and coatings). ELECTROPURE EDI
Prism integrated granulation lines as per current GMP requirements is fully contained during processing to protect operators and environment. Also improves productivity through closed materials transfer, automation, increase yields and efficient cleaning procedures. An integrated granulation line for solid dosages is available from 2 to 1,200 litre working capacity; closed process technology for grading, mixing, granulating, drying, milling, blending and tabletting; reduced amount of transfer operation; better containment for highly potent materials; materials transfer by vacuum transfer system; and sophisticated PLC controls with HMI touch screen.
The Electropure EDI is manufactured by SnowPure LLC, USA, makers of high purity water modules. The EDI module replaces the conventional mixed bed DI unit which produces high purity water up to 18.2 Meg-Ohms-cm resistivity unlike mixed bed unit, which requires regeneration. Electropure EDI does not require regeneration. The Electropure EDI design combines two well-established water purification technologies – electrodialysis and ion-exchange resin deionization. Electropure’s EDI removes ions by forcing them out of the feed streams via an electric potential. This process uses a combination of ion-selective membranes and ion exchange resins sandwiched between two electrodes (anode (+) and cathode (-) under a DC voltage potential) to remove ions from RO pre-treated water. Result is very low conductivity ultrapure water which can be produced continuously up to 18.2 Meg-Ohms-cm resistivity, It finds application in pharma industries, purified water, water for injection (WFI), automobile industries, power stations, boiler feed water, process industries, laboratories for process water, etc.

GAS ANALYZER LYONS, CO – AMETEK MOCON’s Baseline 9100 Gas Analyzer performs the analysis of residual solvents in air p ethanol, isopropanol (IPA) and acetone—that are used insemiconductor cleanroom environments, ie, solvent stations. During semiconductor fabrication processes, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted primarily from diffusion and cleaning during wet-etching processes. The residual presence of these solvents can be detrimental to production yields and to worker health. MOCON’s Baseline 9100 Gas Analyzer combines the selectivity of gas chromatography with the sensitivity of a photo ionization detector (PID). The analysis provides an interference-free response to ethanol (if desired), IPA, and acetone in air - no preconcentration necessary. Competitive analytical approaches that require preconcentration exhibit much longer analysis times, are much more costly, more complex, and suffer from poor reproducibility. The solvents are detected and accurately quantified to sub-ppb levels in under 3 minutes with ethanol producing no interference. The instrument is sensitive to below 5 ppb for both IPA and acetone employing MOCON’s standard Baseline PID, and <0.1 ppb using MOCON’s high sensitivity Baseline PID. MONITORING AND CONTROLLING BRAKES INTELLIGENTLY Brake technology 4.0 stands for intelligent monitoring modules, by which mayr power transmission sets new standards. The modules such as the ROBA-brake-checker and the ROBA-torqcontrol monitor safety brakes easily and quickly or facilitate the even and smooth deceleration of machines and devices. The ROBA-brake-checker module operates without sensors. Instead, it analyzes current and voltage and recognizes the movement of the armature disk. In addition to the switching condition, the module can also deduce the temperature, wear and tension path or tensile force reserve, ie, whether the magnet still has sufficient force to attract the armature disk. On reaching the tensile force reserve, the ROBA-brake-checker emits a warning signal, early enough so that a defined operating time of the brake is still possible. Within this time, the machine operator can undertake specific maintenance in coordination with their work process. The ROBA-brake-checker is now available in a design for AC voltage. Another version of the module will also in future take on the supply of the brake, and as a result, replace the rectifier. Switching condition monitoring and brake control are therefore combined in one device. For applications, which require braking torque control in addition to status monitoring, mayr power transmissions provides ROBA-torqcontrol. It shares the features of the ROBA-brake-checker and can also change the level of the braking torque in operation through purposeful influencing of current and voltage. As a result, devices and machines can be evenly and gently decelerated. The ROBA-torqcontrol module permits the development of control loops and brakes movements intelligently. Another module to continuously monitor the switching condition of the brakes is the safe brake control ROBA-SBCplus. This module has been developed in collaboration with the company Pilz for the protection of people according to standards regarding functional safety. The ROBASBCplus module must reliably interrupt the current in the magnetic coil when the brake is switched Off. The module operates with wearfree electronic semi-conductors, and as a result achieves practically unlimited switching frequency and switching reliability. Furthermore, an integrated plausibility check is conducted through the evaluation of the release monitoring signals. The evaluations of the switching states and the return signal therefore permit reliable error diagnostics. This permits creep errors which influence on the switching times, eg, increasing wear, to be detected in due time. The reliable ROBA-SBCplus brake control unit is type-certified by TÜV Süd (Technical Inspectorate, Southern Germany) and can be used up to the highest Performance Level PLe and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3. ULTRA HIGH SHEAR INLINE MODELS
ZPD gear pumps were specifically designed for dosing applications, oil hydraulics and process technology. Due to different types of toothing and modules, the medium is being delivered with low pulsation, so that exact dosing requirements can be realized the best possible way. By doing so, volumetric efficiency values of over 90% are achieved with characteristic curves largely independent of the operating point. That means that the dosing quantity can be set precisely through the pump speed. It finds application in dosing technology. process engineering and technology. lubricating oil supply and system technology.

ULTRASONIC SENSORS FOR MEASURING STORM WATER RUNOFF Ultrasonic level transmitters, on the other hand, are a widely recognized alternative to hydrostatic pressure level measurement for storm water applications. AMETEK Drexelbrook’s USonic-R level transmitter is a perfect choice for storm water measurement. USonic-R is FM and ATEX approved. It has a patented SmartGain feature that eliminates the issue of false echoes. SmartGain quickly recognizes pumping station obstructions, such as ladders and pipes in sewage wells, helping ensure accurate level readings. USonic-R picks up data from two separate ultrasonic sensors placed at different locations. Data is logged, flow calculated from weirs or flumes and signals can be sent to emergency pumps. The transmitter also can deliver crucial data, showing the state of sewage wells, basins, drilling mud and fluid in tanks. USonic-R incorporates a converter and a datalogger. Data is delivered either as a 4-20 mA or Modbus signal, which allows for easy integration into the most common SCADA systems. The instrument works seamlessly with RTUs, simple pump controls or PLCs. This is important for remote installations in which intelligent or autonomously operation is required for level measurement, flow calculation or pump activation when necessary. The versatile USonic-R even allows two individual ultrasonic sensors to be connected, enabling users to calculate the sum or differential of pumped volume by measuring each side of two basin walls. The unit is weather proof, IP66/NEMA6-P rated and UV protected, meaning that, in general, the device requires no additional protection. Drexelbrook offers a full range of level measurement solutions, including RF Admittance/Capacitance, TDR/GWR, Radar, Ultrasonic, Magnetostrictive, Hydrostatic, Vibration, Conductive and Float Devices. RAS PULSED-NEUTRON TOOL Probe offers the Reservoir Analysis System (RAS) pulsed-neutron tool, a three-detector system that uses sigma and carbon-oxygen (C/O) techniques to measure reservoir fluid saturation of oil, water and gas. The system quantifies water and oil saturation, water flow velocity, and detects gas and porosity. The RAS pulsed-neutron tool was developed by Hunter Well Science, an independent alternative specialist and a subsidiary of Probe, to measure reservoir fluid saturation of oil, water and gas. It operates in three basic modes: sigma - water saturation detected via thermal neutron decay; C/O - oil saturation detected with gamma spectroscopy; and water flow - water velocity from oxygen activation In addition, in sigma mode, the three-detector array can be used to measure gas saturation. For wells with limited data, the tool can make standalone porosity and lithology measurements. By using modern, ruggedized electronics, the pulsed-neutron tool has been streamlined into a compactrobust device. The tool and telemetry-gamma ray casing collar locator (CCL) together constitute the shortest reservoir analysis tool string in the industry, measuring a combined 16.9 feet (5.14 m). At the center of the pulsed-neutron tool is a rugged neutron generator that operates in temperatures as high as 320°F (160°C) and has a typical service life of 1,000 hours, nearly double the lifespan of many other reservoir analysis tools. It is used in a variety of applications, particularly in casedhole and openhole completions in surface read-out and memory-operating modes, on conventional tubing, e-Line, e-Coil, conductor and conventional slickline. To help operators gather definitive saturation data, the pulsed-neutron tool is effective for the following applications: saturation logging of water, oil and gas; time-lapse reservoir monitoring; contact logging and time lapse contact logging; oxygen activation (water flow) to determine water phase velocity; openhole emulation; and wellbore performance (in combination with production logging). The pulsed-neutron tool is offered for purchase to oilfield service companies, NOC’s and IOC’s. For details contact: Probe 6824 N Sam Houston Pky W Houston, TX 77064, U.S.A. ICUE DIGITAL ANOMALY DETECTION APP Clarus Subsea Integrity offers the iCUE Digital Anomaly Detection App, technology that provides rapid, accurate detection of anomalies by reviewing inspection video footage of subsea assets. By using the App to assess footage of subsea risers, pipelines or moorings, for example, operators immediately receive a more accurate account of conditions that might otherwise go undetected. In addition, the speed at which it analyzes footage and identifies anomalies is at least 10 times faster than manual review, which is significant when assessing whether an asset is fit for continued service or requires attention. To achieve this, the App automatically carries out an engineering assessment of the inspection footage. The App is based on machine learning, and draws upon image analysis technologies. Clarus trained it with a machine-learning algorithm to accurately qualify an anomaly by using a structured data set of positive examples of anomalies. Integrity managers can also use it to trend anomalies from multiple inspections conducted on an individual asset field life. This is useful when considering a possible extension for an asset that is approaching the end of its original design life. Armed with more accurate detection reports, they are fully apprised as to the extent, nature and severity of anomalies to determine whether they must be addressed immediately, require ongoing monitoring or remediation before qualifying the asset for life extension. Indorama to buy M&G’s Brazil PET plant Bangkok, Thailand: Indorama Ventures Public Co Ltd. (IVL), has entered into an agreement to acquire M&G Polimeros Brazil SA in Ipojuca Brazil for an undisclosed amount. In a March 16 statement, Bangkok-based IVL said the plant is the largest PET facility in Brazil, with capacity of 550,000 metric tons per year. 50 | June-July 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
According to IVL, the plant is strategically located and benefits from virtual integration with a manufacturer of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), a key feedstock to PET. The transaction is expected to be completed in second quarter of 2018, subject to regulatory approvals. The acquisition in Brazil follows a series of takeovers and investment in recent months by IVL, which claims to be the world’s No. 1 PET player. Industry News A Houston chemical plant company did not properly prepare for hurricane season, resulting in a toxic accident during Hurricane Harvey last year, federal regulators have found. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board on Thursday released an extensive investigation into the flooding-induced chemical fires at the Arkema plant in Crosby, Texas, finding that while the company's insurers flagged the high potential for flooding a year before Harvey, plant employees were unaware of the risk. The investigation also found that plant officials based flooding preparation plans on memories of long-term employees rather than more sophisticated estimates, faulted "limited industry guidance" on flooding, and concluded that other plants in the area may be similarly ill-prepared. "Considering that extreme weather events are likely to increase in number and severity, the chemical industry must be prepared for worst case scenarios at their facilities," CSB Chairperson Vanessa Allen Sutherland said in a statement.

MINING KIOCL will revive mining in Karnataka, after the State granted the company a lease of over 474 hectares at Devadaru hills in Ballari. KIOCL had suspended mining in the eco-sensitive Western Ghats following a Supreme Court directive in 2006. Once approvals are given, it would invest ` 1,500-crore in a pellet plant and also a unit to enrich iron ore from the mines. After suspension of mining, KIOCL had shifted to operating 3.5-million tonne per annum pellet plant in Mangaluru. Last year, it produced 1.46-million tonnes, utilising half its capacity, as against almost nil production in the previous year. International agencies have already implemented pilot projects by bringing high grade iron ore from South America, Iran and other parts of the world and utilising KIOCL's facility, have taken away pellets facilitating better utilisation of its plant capacity and profitability utilising its manpower. The company's blast furnace unit having a capacity of 216,000-tonnes of pig iron which was put under suspension since 2009 has been taken for repair and the unit is ready for operation for producing foundry grade pig iron adding towards its profitability in the coming financial year. JSW Energy, part of the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, is believed to be in the race for buying out the thermal power assets of Monnet Power and Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (JITPL) in Odisha. Monnet Power’s 1,050-MW coal-based power plant near Angul was in advanced stage of commissioning. Monnet Power’s parent company, Monnet Ispat & Energy had won the Mandakini coal block in Odisha in competitive bidding, it surrendered the block later on grounds of economic unviability. Monnet Power had accumulated debt in excess of ` 5,000-crore. Though lenders had earlier denied a haircut in JSW Energy’s prospective deal to acquire majority equity in Monnet Power, the Sajjan Jindal-owned firm is still believed to be in the hunt for the asset. Besides Monnet Power, JSW Energy is also eyeing takeover of BC Jindal controlled JITPL’s 1,200-MW coal-based plant at Derang near Angul. The first unit (600-MW) of the 1,200-MW plant had begun commercial operations and started power supplies to the Odisha grid. But, coal paucity and absence of firm linkages had caused disruptions in the operations of the power plant. This project has been completed at a cost of ` 7,537-crore which includes a debt component of ` 5,900-crore. JITPL has power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Odisha’s Gridco Ltd, Kerala State Electricity Board and Tata Power Trading Corporation. Apart from JSW Energy, JITPL also had competing offers from Adani Power and Singapore’s SembCorp. The valuation of the prospective deal is not known.

About the book: Water Survival Guide: (FREE Bonus Included) Purification, Filtration, Water Storage, and Extraction in the Wilderness A backpacking trip to the woods sounds like a lot of fun, but if you were to run low on water you would not be a happy camper by any means. The deadliest risk that anyone hiking through the wilderness may face is running out of water. Under normal conditions we can only go three days without water, and under more strenuous conditions such as walking through rugged wilderness paths in the hot sun, our limit is reached even faster. In order to safely make your way through the wilderness you will have to know how to not only pack enough water with you, but know how to purify and filter alternate sources of drinking water in case your own supply runs out. This book goes over the most fundamental aspects of water storage, extraction and filtration in an easy to understand manner. Buy this book and never run out of water again!
Publisher: Cambridge University Press (1st Edition) About the book: Focusing on the application of membranes in an engineering context, this hands-on computational guide makes previously challenging problems routine. It formulates problems as systems of equations solved with MATLAB, encouraging active learning through worked examples and end-of-chapter problems. The detailed treatments of dead-end filtration include novel approaches to constant rate filtration and filtration with a centrifugal pump. The discussion of cross-flow microfiltration includes the use of kinetic and force balance models. Comprehensive coverage of ultrafiltration and diafiltration processes employs both limiting flux and osmotic pressure models. The effect of fluid viscosity on the mass transfer coefficient is explored in detail, the effects of incomplete rejection on the design and analysis of ultrafiltration and diafiltration are analysed, and quantitative treatments of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration process analysis and design are explored. Includes a chapter dedicated to the modelling of membrane fouling.
