Designed to work with both the most common and the most aggressive solvents, Saurus939 guarantees:

• Absolute safety for both operators and the process • Easy round-the-clock operation • Unrivalled performance • Nominal flowrate up to 3,800 m3/h • Vacuum level up to 0,03 mbar • Minimum operating costs, thanks to: • Low energy consumption motors • Innovative LubriZero system, with negligible oil consumption • Easy and economical maintenance. Saurus939 vacuum pump is particularly suitable for the most demanding applications, ensuring constant vacuum level and flow rate over time. Powerful, efficient, but absolutely safe: Saurus939 guarantees optimum safety through the whole process and complete purity of the final product. In other words, ensures an uncontaminated vacuum.

Use in the Fine Chemicals Industry Fine chemicals, which are used as raw materials in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and agrochemical sectors, differ from basic chemical products because of their high purity. Producing fine chemicals involves many processes of synthesis and purification employing vacuum technology. These processes include reaction, drying, distillation and crystallization. Reaction Processes Chemical reactions are widely used in synthesizing compounds, where vacuum is required to avoid high temperatures and to remove oxygen and secondary products. Reactions normally take place at temperatures around 10/20 mbara. Vacuum reactors generally have a volume between 1 m3 and 10 m3. For these applications, it is often sufficient to use a vacuum pump with a nominal output between 80e 380 m3/h. Here, the double stage Saurus939 is the ideal solution, thanks to its resistance to corrosive solvents and reliability in the most demanding work environments. Examples of areas where the Italvacuum vacuum pump has been used include the synthesis of: • Compounds for the agrochemical sector, where the ATEX Zone 0 version of the Saurus939 is used • Performance additives for the lubrication market, where the Saurus939 piston pump is the only technology that can be used because of the aggressive solvents and significant amount of powdered materials involved.

a volume between 1 m3 and 4 m3. For these applications, it is often essential to employ the Saurus939 vacuum pump in combination with a Roots compressor. Thanks to uncontaminated vacuum and continuous recovery of extracted solvents, the Italvacuum vacuum pump maintains total finished product purity. Use in the Pharmaceutical Industry Vacuum pumps are among the most widely used types of equipment in the pharmaceutical industry. They are employed at all scales, from pilot to industrial production, and by all sectors, from manufacturers of intermediates to producers of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).

Figure 2: Saurus939 use in the chemicals industry

fine chemical industry, vacuum drying is a batch operation and can be carried out using a variety of technologies, depending on the product involved. Applications for the Italvacuum vacuum pump include drying: • Raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry, where the double stage roots compressor version of the Saurus939 piston pump is used • Raw materials for the biopharmaceutical industry, where the basic double stage version of the Saurus939 vacuum pump is used. Distillation Processes Vacuum distillation is a process in which the pressure above a liquid mixture is reduced to less than the latter’s vapour pressure, thus causing the more volatile liquid to evaporate. This process is used when the liquids to be distilled have low volatility (Teb > 150°C) or can undergo chemical decomposition at temperatures near their atmospheric boiling point. Vacuum distillation is also used to remove impurities from temperature sensitive materials such as flavorings. The pressure at which distillation is carried out may vary according to the compounds to be separated, ranging from values near absolute vacuum up to 60 mbara. Vacuum distillation columns generally have a volume between 5 m3 and 20 m3. For these applications, it is advisable to combine the Saurus939 vacuum pump with a Roots compressor in order to increase nominal output and reduce limit pressure. 8 | April-May 2018 | Chemical Products Finder

Applications of the Italvacuum vacuum pump include distillation of plant-based fragrances and flavorings for the cosmetics and food industries. Crystallization Processes This is a process in which a solid compound is precipitated from a solution. Crystallization is employed in cases calling for extremely low operating pressures, obtained under very low absolute pressures, and for applications that involve relatively small amounts of high value-added material. It is thus usually a batch operation. Crystallization cycles last from 2 to 8 hours. The pressure at which crystallization is carried out can vary from near absolute vacuum up to 30 mbara. Vacuum crystallizers generally have

Figure 3: Saurus939 use in the chemicals industry

A typical process calling for vacuum technology is drying, which is a crucial step in the pharmaceutical production sequence. Drying takes place immediately after centrifugation or filtration. It is a process that removes the moisture from a wet solid by introducing heat. This operation is performed under vacuum in order to dry heat-sensitive or hygroscopic substances at temperatures that are lower than would otherwise be possible. In the pharmaceutical industry, drying is a batch operation and can be carried out using a variety of technologies, depending on the product involved. Crystalline products produced by synthesis (reactors) are chiefly processed using dynamic dryers (ie, rotary and horizontal

Figure 4: Saurus939 use in the pharmaceutical industry

paddle dryers). These products, in fact, must have a very specific particle size and very low humidity. Amorphous or plant and animal based products, on the other hand, are normally processed in static dryers. Particle size is not usually a determining factor for these products, since they are subsequently ground, and the moisture content is never as strictly controlled. Dynamic Drying In a dynamic system, the drying process’s effectiveness depends not only on the system itself, but also on the vacuum unit. This is the typical case found in the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs)

using rotary dryers and horizontal paddle dryers. Here, the vacuum pump must cope at the same time with aggressive organic solvents such as acetone, toluene and so forth, and the potential interaction with solid powder particles (especially if they are not adequately removed by the filter systems). The Italvacuum vacuum pump can deal with both these issues. Where very low final moisture content is required, dynamic dryers are often combined with pumps coupled with roots compressors. For processing purposes, these compressors must be activated at the final stage of drying in order to extract the last traces of solvent retained in pharmaceutical powders. Under

In drying APIs, other vacuum technologies are less effective than the Saurus939 pump. Rotary vane pumps and liquid-ring pumps have a number of shortcomings when used with aggressive solvents, including a short life cycle and limited application in severe operating conditions. Dry pumps, on the other hand, have difficulty dealing with processes involving a great deal of interaction with solid particles, as they are particularly susceptible to damage by minimum quantities of dust. Static Drying By contrast with dynamic dryers, static dryers, which are universal systems capable of drying any product, rarely need roots compressors. In addition, this technology only sporadically requires a filter between the dryer and the vacuum unit. An example of application consists of drying plant extracts, a typical process used in today’s booming herbal industry. This sector combines the most modern extraction technologies with the vacuum drying techniques that the pharmaceutical industry has used from its beginnings. Natural and plant-based products are subjected to solvent extraction. The batch resulting from this process is then dried in order to retain all its heat-sensitive properties without change. The vacuum pump and the condenser unit are activated during this process. Both remain active for the entire duration of the process. The double stage version of the Saurus939 vacuum pump is used with or without a roots compressor. ◘

these circumstances, the condenser which is always mounted upstream of the Saurus939 vacuum unit is bypassed and the positivedisplacement compressor is activated. With the compressor’s help, it is possible to reach very high vacuums – at least an order of magnitude below the levels that could be reached with the vacuum pump alone – together with extremely high output (here again, the output increases by around one order of magnitude).

Solar Telescope Project Team Selects Griswold Pumps for High-performance and Fast Delivery Griswold 811 Series Centrifugal Pumps meet specs and timetable for critical thermal-control functions

F

aithfully rising each morning for uncountable generations, our familiar sun remains a master at hiding the significant secrets of its fundamental physics. Its behaviour can have major effects on our everyday life on Earth. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections can negatively affect or even completely shutdown radio communications, GPS satellite availability and the power grid. Scientists, in their ongoing quest to learn more about Earth’s nearest star, are continually creating new models to explain its nature and predict its behaviour. As the complexity and sophistication of these models grow, they require increasingly advanced solar telescopes with resolutions beyond the capabilities of current installations, even those in space, for validations. To meet this important need, the National Solar Observatory (NSO) is constructing the Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) at an elevation of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) on the Haleakalã volcano summit in Maui, HI. NSO is funded by the National Science Foundation under a cooperative agreement with the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. All research

here is based in part on data collected with the DKIST, a facility of the NSO. While the DKIST’s innovative adaptive optics will provide the sharpest views ever taken of the solar surface, obtaining precise optical performance will require close control of the telescope’s thermal environment. This entails closely matching the surface temperature of the observatory dome’s exterior to the ambient air temperature in order to eliminate any density differential in the air that would degrade the optical path. Maintaining the precise dome temperature in the extreme weather environment atop the volcano requires high-pressure coolant to circulate throughout a network of sheet heat exchangers that are mounted onto the observatory structure. In selecting a suitable pump for this task, the NSO set high operating specifications, including a wide temperature range, and also called for an extremely tight delivery schedule in order to keep the aggressive construction timeline on course. The DKIST To provide solar scientists with a telescope capable of observing the sun at the required high resolution, a collaboration

of 22 institutions, headed by the NSO, National Science Foundation (NSF) and Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), joined together to build the world’s largest solar telescope. The $344-million DKIST will allow observations with unprecedented spatial, spectral and temporal resolution via sub-second spectroscopic and magnetic measurements of the solar photosphere, chromosphere and corona. Its location on Haleakalã was selected for its reliable, clear daytime atmospheric viewing conditions. Construction at the DKIST site began in January 2013, and full operational capability is scheduled for 2020. Controlling Observatory Exterior Surface Temperature – A Critical Function When telescopes operate with such high resolution, all factors affecting performance must be managed to ensure maximum equipment accuracy. One of those factors is control of all observatory and telescope thermal surface environments, which is overseen by LeEllen Phelps, NSO Thermal Systems Manager. Phelps manages the design, equipment acquisition and

Figure 2: The Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) under construction on the Haleakalã volcano summit in Maui, HI, will provide the sharpest views ever taken of the solar surface, but requires precise thermal control of its dome exterior, which will be provided by Griswold 811 Series Centrifugal Pumps. construction of all facility thermal systems at the DKIST. “It is critical that we control the thermal environment of every optic, every instrument and every path that the optical train passes through,” explained Phelps. “To do this at the required precision, we must install numerous thermal-management systems throughout the structure. Our goal is to maintain the instruments and facility at a uniform temperature matching that of the ambient air within ±2°C (±3.6°F). Only so much of that degradation can be compensated for in the optics of the telescope.” An important thermal environment that must be controlled is the exterior surface of the telescope enclosure. The dome presents more than a quarter acre of surface area whose temperature must be precisely regulated to closely match the ambient air. Any temperature differentials between the ambient air and the building surfaces create what scientists call “seeing,” which is a density differential within the air that degrades the optical path and results in image distortion. According to Phelps, the pumps are the heart of the coolant-distribution system that manages the thermal environment of the observatory exterior. “We will use pumps to circulate 10 different temperatures of closedloop heat-transfer fluid to cool different components of the observatory, including the exterior, to a very precise temperature that

Figure 4: JCH Sales Engineer Dean Newbold and LeEllen Phelps with Griswold 811 Series pumps ready for shipment to Hawaii. (Photo Courtesy of Griswold Pump Company, part of PSG)

follows whatever the ambient temperature happens to be at a given time. Several closed loops will circulate coolant a few degrees below the ambient temperature to keep the exterior skin temperature at a state constantly matching ambient conditions even with the sun hitting the surface and with varying wind conditions.” Pumps used for this purpose must meet strict specifications. “In this application, we are using an ionic brine for the heat-transfer solution in a regime of low temperatures that are much lower than what conventional HVAC pumps could handle without freezing up and having issues,” said Phelps. “It’s mostly the low temperatures in some of the cooling regimes that determined the most important pump-specification parameters. Energy efficiency was also an important factor because of the high cost of power on Maui.” Griswold Meets Critical Construction Schedule From the onset, the NSO set an aggressive construction schedule, and thermal-system component selection and acquisition were no exception. After a competitive-bid process, the pump contract was awarded to James, Cooke & Hobson, Inc (JCH), a major industrial equipment distributor based in Albuquerque, NM, USA, with offices in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California and Nevada.

JCH Sales Engineer Dean Newbold was assigned as lead on the project, but knew immediately that meeting the aggressive deadlines set by the NSO would be a challenge. At that point Newbold contacted Griswold Pump Company, Grand Terrace, CA, USA, part of PSG, a Dover company, based in Oakbrook Terrace, IL, USA, for assistance. “Because of the fast-track nature of the project, only Griswold could meet the required testing and delivery timelines, as well as the strict pump-performance specifications,” said Newbold. “This was not a small project because there were 26 pumps, motors and baseplates needed. I had dealt with Griswold in the past, so I went to them first when the scheduling issue came up because Griswold is known for its quick deliveries.” Griswold worked closely with Newbold to meet the deadlines by building, testing and delivering 26 811 Series ANSI Centrifugal Pumps in nine different sizes and configurations, including some with a low-flow configuration. NSO staff personally monitored pump testing to measure suction pressure (psi), discharge pressure (psi), power (HP), speed (rpm), flow (gpm), fluid temperature (°F) and vibration. Exceeding standard ANSI construction requirements, the 811 Series offers many design innovations that deliver long-term operational reliability, including: Chemical Products Finder | April-May 2018 | 11

• Heavy-duty shaft that minimizes vibration and shaft deflection, resulting in optimized pump life, and bearings that are sized for a 10-year life span. “The Griswold 811 Series is perfect for demanding applications like this,” said Newbold. “The NSO staff was very impressed with the construction quality and the performance.” Conclusion Thanks to Griswold Pump Company and its ability to quickly meet tight delivery deadlines with high-quality pumps, the construction of the DKIST’s exterior thermalcooling system is right on schedule.

“Griswold was incredible in ensuring all timetable commitments were met, and we were especially impressed since everything occurred during the holiday season,” said Newbold. “Griswold is a partner we know we can count on, no matter what, plus their pumps have the quality and workmanship needed to meet rigorous specifications, including those for the cooling systems on the DKIST.” Griswold is a global leader in centrifugal pumps from PSG, a Dover company. Headquartered in Oakbrook Terrace, IL, USA, PSG is comprised of several of the world’s leading pump brands, including Abaque®, Almatec®, Blackmer®, Ebsray®, EnviroGear®, Finder, Griswold™, Mouvex®, Neptune™, Quattroflow™, RedScrew™ and Wilden®. Helium is an essential resource for industrial use. The gas has become invaluable for leak detection as well as cooling down magnets in medical equipment. This is why its consumption is increasing and its price is rising rapidly. To combat the looming shortage, new methods of helium recovery are becoming more important than ever – specialised compressors play a vital role in this.

D

ue to its characteristic properties, helium is used for a large variety of industrial applications. With the lowest boiling point of all gases, it is used in cryogenic research for example, as a coolant for magnets found in computer tomographs. Because of its small atomic diameter, it is able to permeate even the smallest

openings. This is what makes the gas an ideal choice for leak testing. The fact that it is inert and almost non-reactive makes it extremely versatile. Helium is also used for quenching in metal working as a superior alternative to oil. The noble gas prevents discoloration from oxidisation. In addition, it eliminates the need for subsequently cleaning the

workpieces, thus increasing efficiency and improving cycle times. Rethinking Required Helium is mostly derived from natural gas, in which it is contained in low concentrations. Rising natural gas prices have contributed to helium also becoming increasingly expensive over the last few

years. Given the growing scarcity, this development is expected to continue, since there are no viable alternatives for helium production. This requires a new approach. For long time, helium, used as a tracer gas for example, was simply expelled into the atmosphere after serving its purpose. Today, an entire industry is looking into ways of recovering and reusing the precious resource. Specially designed recovery systems store the helium in large balloons after its use in leak testing. A compressor siphons the helium and compresses it to 200 bar. In this state it can easily be bottled and stored for later use. Breathing Air Compressors Do Not Meet the Demands of Helium Compression Many manufacturers sell breathing air compressors that are used in diving equipment for compressing helium. However, these compressors are not designed to meet the requirements of the task, because they are not sufficiently gas-tight so as to prevent costly helium leakage. In addition, with an average service life of 200-1,000 hours, breathable air compressors are not made for longterm use. Actual helium compressors are 14 | April-May 2018 | Chemical Products Finder

designed to operate for up to 7,000 hours per year. A Special Gas Calls for Special Means The unique properties that make helium ideal for technical applications are the same properties that complicate its compression. Given the gas’s low atomic size and viscosity, special valves and gaskets are necessary in helium compressors. The use of adhesive sealants further helps to prevent costly leakages. Oil-lubricated compressors in particular tend to have shaft sealing rings that are installed to prevent oil and gas leakage. The problem: these seals only provide one-way leak tightness. The risk of contamination from the outside thus remains high when using standard air compressors. To counteract this, compressors designed for helium applications are doubly sealed. Two opposed shaft lip seals both prevent oil and gas leakage and keep contaminants from entering. Helium compressors are equipped with enclosed safety valves at each compressor stage. When they close, the superfluous gas is not expelled into the surrounding air but redirected to the compressor's priming chamber that is connected to the safety valves. The condensate separator in standard air compressors proves another difficulty

when it comes to compressing helium, as it not only expels condensate but also gas that then needs to be recovered. For this reason helium compressors have condensate drains that enable recirculation of the gas. Accurate Testing for Helium Compressors In order for helium compressors to meet the requirements of the demanding gas, thorough testing is required. Many manufacturers only measure a static leak rate by subjecting the compressor to overpressure during standstill. However, this is not enough to get reliable test results and to ensure sufficient gas tightness. Sauer Compressors, based in Kiel, Germany, has devised an extensive 16-hour test procedure for its helium compressors that is unprecedented in the industry. The goal: maximum leak tightness for the lowest possible loss of helium and the highest attainable gas purity. Instead of using air for testing, Sauer’s specialised helium compressors are fully tested with the gas itself. First, a bubble test is performed to ensure that no gas is leaving the compressor. For this, the compressor is

Economic Use of Resources Besides helium, recovery of other noble gases with similar characteristics, such as argon and neon, will become increasingly relevant in the coming years. In order to ensure an economic use of these resources, specially designed compressors will remain invaluable in the long term.

The WP6550 BasSeal-He from the Sauer Compressors 6000 Series is the largest helium compressor in the manufacturer’s portfolio. Its 5-stage compression enables final pressures up to 350 bar.g and a volume flow of up to 270 m³/h.

subjected to overpressure and completely immersed in water. If a leak is present, it can be localised via the emerging bubbles. The compressor is then subjected to a vacuum in a pressure rise test to ensure protection from contaminants from the

outside. Finally, Sauer Compressors is the only manufacturer employing a pressure decay test in a hermetically sealed helium cycle, measuring a possible loss of helium during operation at final pressure of for, example, 230 bar (g). The result of this

Improving Level Measurement at Ethylene Plants

I

n ethylene plants, balancing environment, health and safety is essential while maximizing productivity. Each part of the ethylene production process has its own challenges and considerations when it comes to monitoring level and ensuring safety and efficiency. Proper level instrumentation can improve this process and bring peace of mind to plant operators. Magnetrol produces a wide range of level instrumentation that can be used in ethylene plants. This article features the stories of two ethylene plants that were able to better manage their processes using MAGNETROL instrumentation.

Case Study #1: Visual Level Indication In Cryogenic Applications An ethylene plant in China required a clear visual indication of level from challenging cryogenic applications including methane, ethane, ethylene and propylene. Specific gravity in these applications ranged from 0.3-0.8. The plant needed a level indicator that could withstand these challenging conditions and provide unobstructed visual indication. The Orion Instruments Atlas Magnetic Level Indicator (MLI) has physical floats in the MLI chamber that can simultaneously meet cryogenic and low specific gravity requirements. The careful float design allows level to be tracked accurately even as temperature and specific gravity shifts. Cryogenic visual flags or indicators, also known as frost shields, prevent frosting to provide a clear visual indication of liquid level. By using ATLAS in their applications, the plant was able to obtain the clear visual level indication that was required.

and control devices to meet safety loop requirements. One proof test requirement was for the mA output to be set below 4 mA and above 20 mA; this was the necessary output range to meet the NAMUR NE43 recommendation. The ORION Jupiter JM4 magnetostrictive transmitter was chosen to fulfill these requirements. It allowed current output to be taken low or high per NAMUR NE43. The advanced diagnostics of the JM4 allowed users to pull echo curves from the transmitter display or access them externally using a PC by wiring into the current loop. MAGNETROL offers numerous level and flow solutions for ethylene applications. To learn more about the products they offer and how they can help increase the efficiency and safety of ethylene plants contact. â—˜

Case Study #2: Meeting Safety Requirements A refinery and petrochemical facility in Canada that primarily produces ethylene needed to upgrade its level measurement devices to meet safety regulations. The facility’s reliability and safety groups needed level devices that met SIL requirements for emergency shutdown (ESD) and safety systems. Both SIL 1 and SIL 2 applications exist at this site. FEP ENCAPSULATED O-RINGS & GASKETS The seamless, uniform Teflon polymer encapsulation provides the chem-rings near universal sealing capability, whilst the continuous reset and the constant pressure of the encapsulation on to the sealing point is performed by the elastomeric core. The result is an overall sealing compression that increases with media pressure. The chem-ring behaves like a highly viscous fluid, any pressure exerted on the seal is transmitted practically undimished in all directions. The chem-ring is an O-ring, consisting of a seamless and uniform Teflon encapsulation, which completely encloses the core material of Silicone or Viton. In brief, the seal is manufactured by pressure injecting the rubber core material into thin wall Teflon tubing. This eliminates any potential gap between the core and the tube wall. The Teflon tubing is joined by a special heat moulding process to give a true, seamless encapsulation. On Shree Gaurav chem-ring, the mould area exhibits no discernible different characteristics to the rest of the circumferance of the seal. There are no joints or ridges to affect the seal’s performance or life. The nature of the moulding process is critical to the quality of the ring. Standards for the manufacture of moulded rubber O-rings call for close tolerances on the IDs and particularly, the cross-sections of the rings. Outside these tolerances, any step in the cross-section can severely affect the O-rings ability to seal. FEP encapsulated O-rings are hand moulded in a very precise and skilled operation. Analysers do not need to be complicated. Here again, plug and play with Memosens Technology and the user-friendly Liquiline operating concept make for easier commissioning and operation. In addition, the analysers offer advanced diagnostic options that can be availed of easily by remote access. In Sum parameters, to assess the organic load in water and wastewater, the four main parameters measured are TOC, SAC, BOD and COD. In Nutrients, modern wastewater treatment plants remove not only carbon but also nitrogen and phosphate. Online measurement of nutrient parameters plays a key role here. In metals and other waste-treatment parameters, the requirements vary between industrial sectors. However, most process water is softened and almost all manufacturing processes require corrosionfree water that does not exhibit turbidity, has no colour and does not contain iron or manganese.

The stationary and portable samplers enable the automatic extraction, distribution and preservation of liquid samples. Regardless of whether they are used in wastewater treatment for the monitoring of water bodies or in drinking water, the sampling process complies with all international legislation. Failsafe temperature monitoring prevents corruption of the sample. Open communication standards make for easier integration into your process. One standardised menu for all devices be it in the sampler or in the Liquiline field device, prevents you from making operating errors. Thanks to modular hardware and flexible software, one can adapt the sample to all applications and sampling conditions with just a few hand movements. Simulataneous sampling and measurement of different parameters used for modern environmental monitoring.

FOAM CONTROL & MONITORING SYSTEM Level measurement experts Hycontrol offers a new SureSense foam control and detection system. Foam causes issues across a wide range of industries from wastewater treatment to food production. Problems caused by foam include pollution, contamination, product loss and downtime, and clean-up costs. Excess foam can also damage equipment such as pumps, compressors and filters on applications such as AD digesters in energy from waste. Anti-foam agents are effective in reducing or removing foam but are expensive and hard to dose correctly as foam is a varying process and a constantly changing substance. The traditional solution to this has been to constantly dose anti-foam chemicals in high quantities, whether foam is present or not. This overdosing is not only wasteful but extremely costly. To overcome this, Hycontrol’s SureSense system utilises patented IMA (Intelligent Multi-Action) technology to monitor and reactively control foam levels in a process. This purpose-designed system is reliable, accurate and is not adversely affected by product build-up or contamination on the probe. SureSense can have up to three foam probes connected to one controller with independent dosing control. Liquid detection capability also provides greater process control and a proportional dosing algorithm further reduces unnecessary anti-foam usage to cut expensive waste to the absolute minimum. Probes can have up to three sensor points, across a length of up to 3 metres. Additional features include additional relay outputs and a clear LCD interface which provides a simple menu-driven set-up. CASE PACKER Packing sensitive liquid food pouches is particularly challenging. Meypack is the specialist for individual end-packaging solutions and with the VP600 case packer it meets the current demands of the market. In a fully automatic process, the machine packs formats ranging in dimension from 70 x 50 x 80 mm up to 200 x 150 x 200 mm (W x L x H). A very small number of finely tuned format parts enable fast and reproducible format changeovers that can be carried out without any tools. A high degree of accessibility is made possible by the use of low-maintenance linear bearings and guiding elements as well as self-cleaning vacuum valves. The product infeed of the VP 600 is carried out via a paddle chain with interchangeable belts that have product-specific pockets and paddles and are able to stack and erect products. With a fast changeover function, the belts can be exchanged immediately and then automatically adjusted for tension and positioning. The blank magazines, which can be adjusted in height, are easily loaded and can be equipped with saw-tooth belts for the tray transport. This prevents the creation of too much pressure at the blank pickup. The interchangeable format-dependent safety guards, also equipped with quick-change elements, provide additional magazine protection in addition to the certified SICK sensors (Safeguard Detectors). Meypack will also be completing a model of the VP 600 Series to efficiently pack miniature bottles (glass and PET) as well as small cans and jars. A future variation of the model with a larger machine footprint will process wrap-around cases, shoulder trays and trays with external lids. PROCESSING MACHINE

HOT MELT DEVICE

The laboratory-scale version of the Romaco Innojet VENTILUS V 5 is used for granulating, drying and coating particle sizes from 10 μm to 2 mm. Due to its special design and enhanced processing efficiency, the VENTILUS V 5 allows up to 25 per cent shorter batch times. The homogeneous flow conditions inside the cylindrical product container enable extremely gentle intermixing of the batch. The process air is controlled by the ORBITER booster, an ingenious container bottom consisting of overlapping circular plates. Together with the ROTOJET, the central bottom spray nozzle, the ORBITER booster forms an innovative functional unit that meets all the requirements for linear scale-ups. The air flow bed technology ensures accurate control of the product movement and equally precise application of the spray liquids. The resulting formulations can achieve the required release profile with between 10 and 15 per cent less spray liquid.

This CIP innovative Innojet IHD 5 hot melt device for pharma applications complies with all GMP requirements for coating and granulation with organic waxes and fats. The fact that there is no evaporation during the hot melt process is a crucial advantage. The processing times are up to 85 per cent shorter as a result. What’s more, since there is no need to heat the air in order to dry the product, energy efficiency is improved. The IHD 5 features a design with all components – including the valve block, dosing unit and melting container – integrated in a compact, block-like housing. This makes it easy to connect the mobile device to the VENTILUS V 5 whenever this is called for by the formulation. All laboratory equipment in the VENTILUS V 5 series can simply be fitted with the spray air heater which is essential for hot melt applications. Heating the system to 120°C prevents the coating liquid from cooling down in the feeding channels and clogging the spray nozzle. The pulsation-free application of the pharma hot melt coating ensures outstanding precision and product quality.

Jet Fuel Demand Touching the Sky! India: The country’s demand for jet fuel has touched record highs this year, thanks to the push to connect more cities via airports as an expanding middle class increasingly takes on to skies as their favoured travelling option. Years of breakneck economic expansion have helped India become the world's fastest growing major domestic aviation market, according to the International Air Transport Association. That has been underpinned by ambitious government plans to overhaul the nation's infrastructure, including a push to build airports and offer airlines incentives to fly to smaller cities. Further adding to the fact is the domestic tourism that is attracting and encouraging the travelers with amusing packages.

Under a flagship government scheme, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to invest ` 175 billion ($2.7 billion) in upgrading airport infrastructure over 2019-20. Average monthly demand for jet fuel could break through 700,000 tonnes this year, up from 2017's record 623,000 tonnes and from 566,000 tonnes in 2016, several industry analysts estimated. That would be an annual growth rate of around 12 per cent, comparable to what China achieved during its main boom years in the early 2000s. India used 2.02 million tonnes of aviation fuel from January-March this year, up 9.4 per cent from a year earlier, the latest government data showed. FGE forecasts a 10.5-per cent year-on-year increase in Indian demand for jet fuel in 2018, while energy consultancy Trifecta expects growth of 12-15 per cent. LNG supply from Gazprom to Commence from May India: India's state-owned gas supplier and developer GAIL Ltd plans

to buy 0.5 million tonnes or eight cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia's Gazprom in 2018/19. GAIL renegotiated the terms of a long-term 2.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase deal with Russia's Gazprom in January. This was the third such renegotiation by India with LNG suppliers to make the imported fuel more affordable, using its position as one of the world's biggest energy consumers to strike better bargains for its companies. India has also renegotiated long-term LNG deals with Qatar's RasGas and Exxon Mobil Corp as spot prices declined substantially amid a supply glut that turned trading of the seaborne gas into a buyers' market. GAIL is planning to get as much as 5 million tonnes of LNG from the United States as well, equivalent to about 80 cargoes throughout the fiscal year. GAIL is also working on implementing a national gas grid that is aimed at connecting the under-served eastern part of the country to the rest of the nation 48 | April-May 2018 | Chemical Products Finder

Industry News to cater to consumer demand, and drive the growth of the baby feeding bottles market.

Amtala, India : Wacker Metroark Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. is expanding

Baby feeding bottles made out of polycarbonate are known to contain a harmful chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA). This BPA is a harmful chemical, and is known to mimic a hormone in the body which activates the progression of cancer and interferes with the development of the reproductive system. Due to its harmful nature, the usage of this chemical has been banned by many government bodies as far as baby feeding bottles are concerned. In recent times, even BPA-free polycarbonate has been found to be harmful for infants, which has led to mistrust amongst consumers towards the bottles made out of polycarbonate material. This factor has largely affected the segmental growth of the baby feeding bottles market.

its existing silicone production at its Amtala site near Kolkata with a new hydrosilylation plant for manufacturing functional silicone fluids. The plant with an annual capacity of over 6,000 metric tons was officially opened at a ceremony in Amtala. The expansion is WACKER’s response to growing regional demand for specialty silicones for use in the textile, personal-care, rigid and flexible polyurethane foam and agrochemical sectors. The investment for the plant amounts to around €6 million. “With this expansion of our production, we are broadening our product portfolio and can thereby open up new markets in the growth regions of India and Southeast Asia,” explained Christian Hartel, Executive Board member at Wacker Chemie AG with responsibility for Asia, at the opening ceremony today. “This investment underscores the commitment of WACKER to the Indian market and shows that our company is continuously growing its technical expertise and capacities in Asia.” Hydrosilylation is a chemical process in which organofunctional groups, such as glycols, olefins or ketones, are “docked” onto the periphery of silicones. This is done in order to modify the properties of the end product and render a silicone fluid, for example, hydrophobic (water-repellent) or hydrophilic (water-attracting). Hydrosilylation silicone products reduce the incompatibilities between oils and water, thereby improving the compatibility with organic systems. The second application area of the new products manufactured in Amtala are polyurethane foams, in which functional silicone fluids serve as additives for adjusting the cell structure. Such foams are used in car interior trim and insulation materials. Silicone fluids and emulsions are also used in personal care products (eg, shampoos), in softeners for the textile industry and in agricultural applications. “Our new hydrosilylation plant enables us to address promising new markets where we haven’t been represented in India and Southeast Asia until now – for example the market for silicone functional fluids with its many sales opportunities,” said Soumitra Mukherjee, Managing Director of Wacker Metroark Chemicals. “In this way, we intend to secure our position as the market and technology leader for silicones in the region and provide a basis for further growth.”

Baby Feeding Bottles to Reach Worth USD 3,556.4 Mn by 2025 India: According to the latest market report published by Transparency Market Research titled ‘Baby Feeding Bottles Market’: Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2017-2025’, the revenue generated from baby feeding bottles was registered over US$ 2,469.9 Mn in 2017, which is projected to increase at a CAGR of 4.7% during the forecast period (2017-2025)

Safe and convenient baby feeding bottles are occupying the most space on the shelves in the market. Parents are also looking for durable baby feeding bottles. Products with extra features and which offer optimal safety to babies are becoming increasingly important for manufacturers

In 2017, the European Commission, which is an organization monitoring the proposals of European legislations, and implements decisions for the European Parliament, extended its ban on the use of BPA in baby feeding bottles to other products which come in contact with food and drinks, such as drinking cups and bottles. This signifies the potential of BPA as a harmful chemical in the body, and is also a strong restraint in the growth of polycarbonate baby feeding bottles. On the basis of region, the market in APAC is anticipated to dominate the global baby feeding bottles market both in terms of value and volume through to 2025. This trend is attributed to consumer dependence on baby feeding bottles as baby population is increasing exponential in this region. Moreover, China is projected to exhibit significant CAGR in terms of value during the forecast period. Some of the major companies operating in the global baby feeding bottles market are Philips AVENT, Artsana USA Inc., Novatex North America, Linyi Shansong Biological, Mayborn Group, Handi-Craft Company, Munchkin Inc., Tupperware, BABISIL, Pigeon India Pvt. Ltd, Narula Overseas Industries Pvt. Ltd., Bonny Baby Care Pvt. Limited, Wuxi New Swiss Baby Products Co., Ltd., Alpha Baby Care Co., Ltd., Paul Manufacturing Company, Narang Plastics, Chemco Group, Linco Baby Merchandise Work's Co., Ltd., Farlin and Vital Baby.

Project Update

New Contracts/Expansions/Revamps The following list is a brief insight into the latest new projects by various companies in India. CHEMICALS Coal India is planning a ` 10,000-crore joint venture along with GAIL India, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF) and The Fertilizer Corpn of India Ltd (FCIL) to set up a urea and ammonium nitrate chemicals complex that will run on gasified coal. Coal India has appointed Projects and Development India (PDIL) to conduct a feasibility study on the project. The plan is to use around 6-million tonnes of coal from coalfields at Talcher in Odisha and manufacture about 3-lakh tonnes of urea annually and around 300-400 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per day. Ammonium nitrate is the principal ingredient for making explosives used as blasting material at coal mines. The country is facing a crunch in the supply of ammonium nitrate and explosive suppliers often jack up prices, resulting in higher input costs for the company. Songwon Industrial Co Ltd of South Korea has launched its new pilot plant in Panoli (Gujarat), thereby strengthening the organisation’s overall specialty chemicals development capability. Built on Songwon’s Indian site with all the necessary main unit operations, the new plant is equipped with the most up-to-date technologies and materials for producing a wide range of chemicals for a broad spectrum of applications - from one kilo up to several hundred kilo samples. To reinforce the organisation’s position in existing areas of business and enhance its ability to enter new areas, the new pilot plant will be supported by the Songwon’s strong local R&D team in Panoli, as well as its central technology innovation center located in Maeam, Korea. AkzoNobel a Dutch specialty chemicals company and Atul Ltd have agreed to jointly set up a manufacturing plant for monochloroacetic acid (MCA) at Atul’s facility in Gujarat. Each partner will hold a 50 per cent stake in the venture. The partnership will build on Atul's status as a leading global supplier of the herbicide 2,4-D (which uses MCA as a key raw material), and AkzoNobel’s leading global position in MCA market, with plants in the Netherlands, China, Japan and the US. The investment is subject to regulatory approvals and signing of final agreements. The partnership will use chlorine and hydrogen manufactured by Atul to produce the monochloroacetic acid, taking advantage of both Atul's existing infrastructure and the leading eco-friendly hydrogenation technology supplied by AkzoNobel. From an initial annual capacity of 32-kilotonnes (KT) at start-up, the plant has been designed for future expansion to 60-KT. GVMC has initiated a process to take up bio-mining of the accumulated waste renewing its efforts to re-mediate the solid waste dump-yard at Kapuluppada. To begin with bio-mining is proposed to be taken up in five acres of the dump-yard. GVMC has sought the involvement of private companies under corporate social responsibility (CSR) or by investing money to salvage the dump yard to which garbage is being transported

for nearly two decades and piled up there. About 60 of the 100 acres in the dump yard has been filled up, according to officials. The cost of bio-mining is roughly put at ` 400 a tonne going by the experience of other civic bodies. With the city generating about 1,000 tonnes of garbage the cost comes to a whopping ` 4 lakh a day. Spending ` 1 crore a month on fuel alone to transport the solid waste to the dumpyard, GVMC has recently come out with plans to set up organic waste converters at six Rythu Bazars and Poorna Market and asked bulk generators like hotels to go in for OWCs. Also separation of waste in 72 colonies of as many wards has also been taken up. The Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 lay down that local bodies should investigate and analyse all old open dump-sites and existing operational dump-sites for their potential of bio-mining and bio-remediation. The rules also specify that only non-usable, non-recyclable, no-biodegradable and non-reactive inert waste and pre-processing rejects and residues from waste-processing facilities should go to sanitary land-fill. In bio-mining, the waste is levelled first and recyclables removed from it. The waste is then sieved and material useful for compost is again separated from it. The remaining waste goes to the landfill. NTPC Ltd the State-owned power generator hopes its captive coal production will reach 100-million tonne (MT) as soon as its five coal blocks commence operations, aided by faster regulatory clearances and the part-privatization model of Mine Development and Operator (MDO). The success of the plan would determine fuel security of the operations of India's largest power producer. KIOCL will revive mining after a decade in Karnataka, after the State granted the company a lease of over 474 hectares at Devadaru hills in Ballari. Once approvals are given, it would invest ` 1,500-crore in a pellet plant and also a unit to enrich iron ore from the mines. After suspension of mining, KIOCL had shifted to operating 3.5-million tonne per annum pellet plant in Mangaluru. Last year, it produced 1.46-million tonnes, utilising half its capacity, as against almost nil production in the previous year. The company's blast furnace Unit having a capacity of 216,000 tonnes of pig iron is ready for operation for producing foundry grade pig iron adding towards its profitability in the coming financial year Western Coalfields has received the environment clearance for its ` 263-crore expansion project in Nagpur district, Maharashtra. The proposal is to enhance the production capacity of the Gokul open cast mine to 1.875-million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from the existing 1-MTPA. The mine, located in 767.17 hectare, has a mineable reserve of 14.50-million tonnes. Among the conditions specified, the company has been asked to get 'Consent to Operate' certificate from the State Pollution Control Board for the existing production capacity of 1-MTPA and also the 'Consent to Establish' for the proposed capacity of 1.875-MTPA prior to enhancing the production capacity. With regard to transportation of coal, the company has been asked to carry out by covered trucks and take mitigative measures to control dust and other fugitive emissions all along the roads by providing sufficient numbers of water prinklers. The company has been informed to adopt controlled blasting techniques to control ground vibration and flying rocks. It has also been told to implement a progressive afforestation plan covering an area of 376.04 hectare at the end of mining. Of the total quarry area of 231.73 hectare (on floor) and 291.21 hectare (on surface), the backfilled quarry area of 115.39 hectare should be reclaimed with plantation and there will be no void left at the end of the mining operations. The land after mining should be restored for agriculture purpose. Chemical Products Finder | April-May 2018 | 53

CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS Author : Johann Friedrich Gülich Price : $279.99 No of pages : 1,116 pages (Hardcover) : Springer (3rd Edition) About the book: This book gives an unparalleled, up-to-date, in-depth treatment of all kinds of flow phenomena encountered in centrifugal pumps including the complex interactions of fluid flow with vibrations and wear of materials. The scope includes all aspects of hydraulic design, 3D-flow phenomena and part load operation, cavitation, numerical flow calculations, hydraulic forces, pressure pulsations, noise, pump vibrations (notably bearing housing vibration diagnostics and remedies), pipe vibrations, pump characteristics and pump operation, design of intake structures, the effects of highly viscous flows, pumping of gas-liquid mixtures, hydraulic transport of solids, fatigue damage to impellers or diffusers, material selection under the aspects of fatigue, corrosion, erosion-corrosion or hydro-abrasive wear, pump selection and hydraulic quality criteria. As a novelty, the 3rd Edition brings a fully analytical design method for radial impellers, which eliminates the arbitrary choices inherent to former design procedures. The discussions of vibrations, noise, unsteady flow phenomena, stability, hydraulic excitation forces and cavitation have been significantly enhanced. To ease the use of the information, the methods and procedures for the various calculations and failure diagnostics discussed in the text are gathered in about 150 pages of tables which may be considered as almost unique in the open literature. The text focuses on practical application in the industry and is free of mathematical or theoretical ballast. In order to find viable solutions in practice, the physical mechanisms involved should be thoroughly understood. The book is focused on fostering this understanding which will benefit the pump engineer in industry as well as academia and students.
