Nagda and Jhagadia sites have a cogeneration plant which is fuelled by biomass. By utilizing a renewable source of energy (soya or mustard husk), LANXESS has significantly reduced its carbon foot-print by 70,000 metric tonnes of coal per year and thus reduced annual CO 2 emissions by about 120,000 tonnes. This co-generation plant, being the largest consumer of Biomass in the region, benefits farmers financially. Taking another step towards sustainability, the waste water post treatment plant was commissioned at the site. This plant treats the discharge from the existing Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) in a manner that virtually no liquid effluent is discharged from the site. This initiative not only prevents contamination of the river Chambal, which is primary source of water for the villagers downstream but also significantly reduces dependence on conventional water sources. Further, to significantly reduce carbon foot-print, 96 per cent of Jhagadia’s and 60 per cent of Nagda’s export consignments have been shifted from road to railways. There is a growing demand for clean drinking water due to a booming population and the trend towards urbanisation in India. How will you treat industrial water for the semiconductor and plasma industries, food production and power generation? In many parts of India, large swathes of the population still do not have access to clean drinking water, and it remains a top priority for government in our country. The diversity of LANXESS’s product portfolio necessitates the use of many chemical and technical processes. Uniformly high standards for planning, constructing and operating facilities are applied to ensure the maximum possible process and plant safety. A comprehensive safety management system (SMS) sets out regulations governing all safety-relevant processes at production plants. Regular checks and intensive staff education and training programs ensure that the SMS is implemented consistently and help to prevent accidents. How do you intend taking CSR (corporate social responsibility) to the next level of PSR (personal social responsibility)? Figure 3: Production facilities at the LANXESS site in Jhagadia
LANXESS products play a key role in rendering water safe for drinking all around the world. LANXESS’ Lewatit ion exchange resins and Bayoxide arsenic adsorbers remove pollutants from water and other liquids. LANXESS has developed an iron oxide, called Bayoxide E33, which is designed specifically for the removal of arsenic from water. The water treatment system is built around a solid bed of ironoxide beads. The specially-engineered beads have finely structured surfaces that adsorb pollutants when contaminated water flows over them. Another widely used water treatment process is ion exchange with Lewatit, which is used to remove pollutants such as nickel, nitrate or certain hydrocarbons from drinking water. During the ion exchange process, contaminated water flows through a container filled with ion exchange resins. What is the role of your R&D? How do you give direction to your innovative process and how committed is LANXESS to ongoing innovation? Our research and development activities are closely allied to the needs of the market and our customers. Each business unit therefore has its own development
14 | October-November 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
capacities. In addition, our central R&D unit of the Group Function PTSE supports the business units with chemical expertise as well as central facilities for experimental investigations on laboratory and pilot plant scale. Our common goal is the successful execution of research and development projects from the first idea to the finished product. In addition to the development of new products we also focus on new applications for existing products as well as on product modifications. How do you ensure SHE (safety, health and environment) is implemented? What sort of training do you impart on your workforce? LANXESS plants boast of state-of-theart green technology. For example, wastewater is thoroughly pre-cleaned before being released into the large treatment plant. The pre-cleaning process takes place in a separate, ultramodern LANXESS treatment plant and ensures that all used water is already near drinking water quality when it leaves the company premises. It is treated again at the chemical park’s own treatment plant.
At LANXESS India Private Limited, we act in accordance with the principles of responsible care and sustainable development to safeguard our employees, customers, stakeholders, society and environment. In doing so, we ensure compliance with globally accepted social and ethical standards and values. Consequently, the Company makes decisions based not only on financial parameters, but also taking into consideration the social and environmental impact arising out of the actions of the Company. The Company endeavours to make CSR a key business process for sustainable development, through its integration in the overall business approach. While we meet the legal requirements concerning CSR, our approach towards CSR projects is similar to PSR as you term it. We have been associated with organizations like Teach for India and Stree Mukti Sanghatana among others wherein, our colleagues actively get involved in the projects. Our intervention is not limited to monitoring the project but extends to contributing time and energy in personal capacity, too. ◘

Digital transformation combined with digital engineering processes can act as a catalyst to unlock enterprise-wide innovation, enabling chemical companies to diversify their business. According to the Construction Intelligence Center (1), 2018 wittnesses a significant amount of new multi-billion chemical projects, making it more crucial than ever before for the key players to adopt new technologies. In this article, Hans Kouwer and Erika Gracés, Hexagon PPM, discuss the current and upcoming challenges in the chemical industry and how technology can help. Chemical Industry Challenges
Hans Kouwer Information Management Principal for Global Business Development Hexagon PPM E-mail: hans.kouwer@hexagon.com
One of the key challenges for chemical companies is the ongoing stream of mergers and acquisitions. More and more companies are looking for ways to improve profitability and diversify the business by joining forces with other leading companies in the field. This requires the
handover and consolidation of enormous volumes of data and documentation as asset ownership is transferred. In addition, the complexity and scale of projects related to the chemical industry is continuously growing, making efficient collaboration between different, globally dispersed stakeholders increasingly important. Companies need to be able to reduce complexity of projects, integrate asset information across silos, and streamline workflows across the entire global value chain. This is happening at the time when regulatory authorities’ requirements are growing increasingly stringent, affecting the way chemical engineers and others that work on facilities perform their daily tasks. Having access to the digital asset information is becoming more important for any engineer who wishes to execute their work safely and compliantly. ¬ One of the key ways for chemical companies to facilitate the challenges mentioned above is to adopt Industry 4.0 principles, in other words, to go through a digital transformation that would enable the creation of smart facilities, and allow access to digital asset information for all employees. Chemical Industry and Industry 4.0 According to the European Commission’s Digital Transformation Monitor (2) , approximately 15 million jobs are linked to production of goods and chemicals. Similarly, according to the 2016 Global Chemical Products Finder | October-November 2018 | 15

scanned. The equipment is highly portable and can be moved quickly between scanning stations to cover the whole plant. The laser's range means there is no need to get close to hazardous equipment and working at height can be minimized. Using the free Leica Truview software the scan data is presented as a point cloud, in which each pixel has X, Y and Z co-ordinates. This means that even without building a new 3D model, the point cloud can be used for measurements and comparisons with existing CAD models of the plant.
Industry 4.0 Survey by PwC (3) , the 2000+ companies that responded to the survey are expecting to dramatically increase their overall level of digitization. While just 33% of the responded rate their company as advanced today, over 70% expected digitalization to advance by 2020. As digitalization of engineering processes and the Industry 4.0 approach are becoming key for any (chemical or otherwise) company to survive, it’s useful to look at the key issues holding the industry back from adopting Industry 4.0 principles. One of the key issues is that many companies are still working with document-centric, and often even paper-based, information management systems. Their existing data is often located in many different sources: paper archives, local databases, Microsoft Excel lists, legacy systems, 3D models, point clouds, etc. To make it even more complicated, every internal discipline or department has their own set of data that is not shared with other departments in the organization. There are many challenges related to a document-centric approach to asset information management – lack of transparency, low quality of data, duplicated information, and difficulty 16 | October-November 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
of finding what users are looking for. In addition, not having a virtual overview of the current status of the physical facility, and access to digitalized asset information, makes leveraging the Industry 4.0 principles impossible, or at the very least extremely burdensome. Creating a Digital Twin What are the first steps needed for a company to get started with digital transformation? In other words, what is needed for a company to move towards adopting Industry 4.0 principles? The starting point is quite simple: moving away from a document-centric approach to having a data-centric environment for engineering information. This would involve hosting all data and, documentation in a centralized location, and therefore having a complete representation of the physical asset in a virtual format, eg, creating digital twin. To facilitate this, more and more owner operators are using laser-scanning technology to capture the as-built information of their assets. The whole process starts with surveying the plant with a laser scanner. Each scan only takes about five minutes and captures millions of data points, and high definition photographs of the area
Together with the photographs, the captured brownfield data and the point cloud data makes it possible to do a virtual walk-through of the plant, from one scanning station to another, and to take measurements. Based on this information, a virtual presentation of the physical asset can be created, and the owner would have a digital twin of their existing plant. This kind of data-centric environment is based on a single instance of an object, and the intelligent, dynamic relationships between them. These relationships allow owners to manage, change and find what they are looking for based on what they know, without having to worry about duplicates or inconsistent data. Once engineering information is more actionable, accurate and up-to-date, smarter software solutions can bring yet another paramount benefit to the chemical industry: the ability to access engineering information via a zerofootprint client. This type of a web browser-based application enables secure access to critical information at any time, on almost any platform with a simple link, providing decision makers with the information they need in a timely , and efficient manner without installing any software. When combined with augmented reality solutions, zero footprint applications
Features
provide chemical companies an unprecedented access to real-time data of their facilities. Once the digital twin is established, it can be further leveraged through value-added work processes such as management of change, process safety information management to provide greater efficiencies and reduce risk on facilities. The digital twin also provides the single authoritative source of information for facility configuration information that can be provided to other key operation systems such as maintenance, inspection and reliability systems. Real-life Digitalization Example One of the biggest global chemical companies has recently started the digitalization of their production processes and engineering technology. The key goals for the project were firstly to enable better collaboration between the engineer, production and maintenance departments across their different production sites. Secondly, the company aimed to move away from a documentcentric approach a data-centric approach and to prepare the company for a digital transformation by adapting Industry 4.0 principles. One of the key ways to achieve this was to invest in a platform to establish a standardized set of applications and asset information for the complete asset
life cycle. To achieve this, the company invested in Hexagon PPM technologies to establish fully digitalized facility operations. The first step will be to set up an environment to support the company’s upcoming greenfield projects based on Hexagon PPM’s integration capability between engineering, information management and design tools. During the next phase, this platform will be extended to support operations and maintenance processes, and provide a single source of truth for all of their asset information. This step includes also a concept of moving all the existing data and documentation to the new environment. The final goal of the project is to increase efficiency over the full plant life cycle, and to prepare for the digital age by leveraging the Industry 4.0 approach.
Furthermore, condition-based advanced maintenance will in the future enable chemical companies to develop tools that allow remote control of equipment and automated prevention and prediction of failures. Access to a digital twin is a cornerstone for adopting Industry 4.0 approach in the chemical industry. This will also positively affect the chemical engineering as a principle, as engineers can improve decision-making and efficiency by having access to all the relevant and up-to-date data anytime and anywhere. ◘ References 1.

A
Revolutionary
A multi-patented machine which is conquering the most demanding operators from all around the world, by guaranteeing results that were unthinkable till now with conventional systems, both horizontal and vertical. Planex System is a special horizontal vacuum paddle dryer with an eccentric agitator featuring two independent movements, allowing it to simultaneously revolve around its own axis and to rotate
Figure 2: Italvacuum Workshop Vacuum Dryers
tangentially to the drying chamber, ideal for the production of APIs. The combined rotations of the agitator and its small size compared to the drying chamber diameter, ensures the perfect mixing of the entire batch, and allows consuming at least three times less energy than conventional dryers with concentric agitators. This means a three-fold reduction in mechanical and thermal stresses on the batch being dried (analysis by Politecnico di Torino’s Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering). As a result, even the most delicate and temperature-sensitive products are treated with maximum care. But there is more. Planex System, thanks to its agitator’s ZeroFriction® planetary movement, prevents the product from being rubbed against the drying chamber walls and thus heating up due to friction, a typical problem in conventional paddle systems. In addition, the rotation of the paddles tangentially to the chamber walls, conveys the product into the small clearance between the agitator and the chamber surface, preventing lumps formation and guaranteeing an even more effective drying and a controlled final particle size distribution, which is impossible to achieve with conventional dryers. Thanks to the agitator movement controlled by the “Stop & Swing” program, it is also ideal for drying small batches.
The central body is made of a double cone chamber, characterized by smooth surfaces without edges and sharp corners. During the rotation, this structure helps the total and continuous revolution of the mass to be dried and allows a homogenous and delicate mixing. The double cone shape of the rotary chamber would not be effective in itself if it did not contain inside the two powerful electric lump breaker units – which are a peculiar characteristic of the CRIOX System – allowing for the increase of the product surface exposed to the evaporation and to enhance the agitation
MULTISPRAY Cabinet Dryer, A Consolidated Ever Evolving Technology Best results, ergonomics, safety and flexibility for any product batch. These are the qualities that have always characterised MULTISPRAY vacuum tray dryers, result of Italvacuum's consolidated experience in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical industry process applications. But that’s not all, because the important added value that differentiates MULTISPRAY innovative dryers from conventional systems
CRIOX System, Powdering While Drying An international great success patent, which consists of a rotary vacuum dryer/ pulverizer, counting more than 400 units installed in more than 30 countries.

efficacy of the system. The lump-breaker units not only breaks down the eventual preexisting agglomerates in the wet powders thus preventing the forming of lumps, but they also allow for grinding and powdering during the last drying phase, limiting the use of the mill. This helps having bulk products ready for bagging or powders with checked final particle size distribution, where the next operation is often limited to a sifting phase. CRIOX is versatile and profitable: specific solutions have been studied for the products automatic loading and unloading and also in order to wash, to clean through and to inspect the plant before changing the batch. This means the opportunity to pass quickly from one product campaign to another, as production demands.

Power, load flexibility, drying speed, easy unloading, maximum quality of dried product. All important and fundamental values, but Italvacuum went even further. Improvements in operational efficiency coupled with the ability to handle most chemicals make the air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump a perfect choice for chemical processors
S
ince its invention in 1955 as a mining pump, the air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump has established a well-earned reputation as a technology that is ideally suited for utilitarian, auxiliary or basic liquidhandling and transfer applications. AODD pumps excel in these types of applications because they possess design characteristics that allow them to offer simple, sealless operation and enable them to self-prime, run dry, achieve suction lift up to 30 feet (9 meters or 14.7 psia), resist deadhead pumping
conditions, operate while submerged and pass solids up to 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter. It did not take long for companies to see why these operational characteristics would be highly desirable in many process applications and why AODD pumps are in actuality true “process” pumps that are capable of performing efficiently, reliably and safely in a wide range of critical fluid-handling applications. AODD pumps also hit the operational sweet spot in many of the fluid-handling tasks that are prevalent in the chemical-processing industry. In fact, there are four key areas in which AODD pumps will outperform competitive technologies in terms of efficient, reliable and cost-effective operation. Chemical processors who are looking to optimize their operations would be wise to consider the advantages that AODD pumps can provide in these areas. Let’s take a closer look at all four:
Figure 1: While plastic pumps are typically a go-to pumping technology in chemical processing, there can be instances where metal pumps are a better choice for the operator. Specifically, bolted, ductile-iron AODD pumps from Wilden can meet the needs of the processor through efficient operation and reliable prevention of leaks and cross-contamination, and they do it at a lower price point than stainless-steel models.
1) The Importance of Air As their name states, the operation of AODD pumps relies on compressed air, which can be found in most chemicalprocessing plants around the world. Leveraging this ready availability of air can make the AODD pump a true plug-and-play device that requires no infrastructure upgrades to incorporate. Additionally, the use of air to power the pump is the key source of one of its most sought after capabilities, the ability to deadhead without damaging the pump, system or fluid. This makes AODDs very easy and flexible pumps to operate. Keeping air usage low is critical to maintaining a healthy environment and a healthy processing plant, and recent
technological advances have taken significant steps towards realizing these goals. The advances have been focused around one slight shortcoming in AODD pump operation - at the end of every pump stroke, a small amount of air is consumed that does not contribute to the movement of the fluid (Imagine hitting the gas pedal in a vehicle that is on ice; the wheels spin, but the car does not move). Because of that operational challenge, the manufacturers of AODD pumps were constantly searching for ways to decrease or eliminate the air (or energy) loss at the end of the pump stroke. AODD pump developers kept working to conquer the air-loss quandary and eventually reached a new pinnacle of air-distribution system (ADS) operation in 2013 when the engineers at Wilden Pump and Engineering Co, completed the development of the Pro-Flo SHIFT ADS technology. This redesigned ADS features a revolutionary air control spool that reduces the amount of air that is allowed into the pump at the end of the stroke, which drastically reduces the amount of “wasted” energy that had traditionally been lost to the atmosphere. This allows the AODD pump to realize up to 60 per cent savings in air consumption (over competitors), improves the pump’s suction-lift capabilities and enables the pump to better handle high inlet pressures, all while delivering more yield per standard cubic foot per minute (SCFM) of air consumed than AODDs that feature traditional ADS technology. 2) Low Maintenance Costs through Proper Diaphragm Selection Diaphragm pumps have a unique benefit when compared to many rotating-pump Chemical Products Finder | October-November 2018 | 21

Four Reasons to Choose AODD Pumps for Chemical Processes
Marketing Initiative Figure 2: A true innovation in AODD pump operation occurred in 2013 when Wilden completed development of its Pro-Flo SHIFT Air Distribution System (ADS). The design of the Pro-Flo SHFT, which features a revolutionary air control spool, eliminates costly air loss at the end of the pump stroke, resulting in up to 60 per cent savings in air consumption when compared to competitive models.
technologies in that they do not require any seals. Elimination of the need for packing or expensive mechanical seals means that maintenance costs tend to be inexpensive and infrequent. Combined with the ease of operation, AODDs are a true “set-and-forget type of pump, provided the right diaphragms are selected for the application. Diaphragm material choice, shape and pump design all play a role in enhancing the life of the diaphragm. Along with the advances in ADS design and operation, the improvements made in diaphragm construction and function over the years has been meaningful. Chief among them is that long-life diaphragms that have been engineered for use in chemical-processing activities require less maintenance, which lowers repair costs for the operator. Wilden has stepped forward in this area, as well, with the creation of the Chem-Fuse Integral Piston Diaphragm (IPD). Unlike conventional diaphragms, the outer piston in the Chem-Fuse IPD is completely encapsulated within the diaphragm’s 22 | October-November 2018 | Chemical Products Finder

thermoplastic (TPE) elastomer material, which provides several benefits. First, the IPD design removes the phenomenon known as outer piston abrasion, which is when the outer piston rubs against the diaphragm as it cycles and over time, like sandpaper, wears away the material. Removing the outer piston eliminates this failure mode, therefore dramatically increasing diaphragm life. Secondly, it also removes a known leak point in traditional diaphragm designs around the outer piston, improving overall safety when handling dangerous chemicals. Finally, the IPD eliminates an area along the outer piston where pumped fluid can be trapped. In summary, with the Chem-Fuse diaphragm, Wilden has been able to create an advanced IPD that uses the same length shaft as conventional diaphragms, so operators can get all of the product-containment, safety and lifetime benefits without sacrificing flow, suction lift or efficiency. In the end, the downtime and maintenance that unplanned failures can incur are typically more expensive for the facility
operator than the spare parts required to keep the AODD pump operating. The use of IPDs allows the pump to run longer before requiring diaphragm maintenance and will translate directly to a healthier bottom line. 3) Versatile and Compatible By definition, chemical processing requires the completion of some of the most intricate and complex industrial operations in the world. One of the most crucial operations is the transfer of liquids along the production chain. Due to the importance of the many fluid-transfer operations along the breadth of the chemical-manufacturing chain, facility operators need to identify the best pumping technology for the job. The technology must possess the versatility to perform reliably and efficiently at any number of points in the production hierarchy. AODD pumps can match the supposed advantages of competing pump technologies because of a number of operational advantages:
Marketing Initiative
• They are appropriate for use with highviscosity fluids and can handle fluids that range from water-like to medium and very viscous liquids • They can run dry and strip discharge lines without getting damaged; if the pressures get to be too much, the pump will just stop running, but it will not break • They are simple devices and their control relies solely on solenoid operators, pump-cycle counters and surge-dampener assemblies
• Their operating costs can be lower when all of the maintenance, accessories and controllers are included, and in many cases their total cost of ownership is lower over their entire operational lifespan when compared to competitive pump styles Additionally, a new generation of AODD pump styles – highlighted by Wilden’s bolted pump models – has been designed to be direct bolt-to-bolt and pipe-to-pipe drop-in replacements in existing pumping systems. This makes them a cost-effective
Figure 4: Wilden Chem-Fuse Integral Piston Diaphragms (IPD) are designed with a piston that is integrated into the diaphragm itself. The result is that unlike conventional diaphragms, the Chem-Fuse IPD has no outer piston abrasion, which is a key failure mode for conventional diaphragms, and eliminates a potential leak point around the outer piston. This means improved diaphragm life and peace of mind when handling hazardous liquids.
way to upgrade fluid-transfer performance while simultaneously realizing the benefits inherent in the operation of an AODD pump that features an advanced ADS – reduction in air consumption and expense, optimized product handling and containment, and scaled-back maintenance and replacement costs. Finally, the design and operation of AODD pumps allows them to transfer wide range of liquids with varying handling characteristics. One of the most prominent is viscosity, or the thickness of the liquid that is being transferred. The operation of AODD pumps virtually eliminates product slip, regardless of the fluid’s viscosity, since the pump’s ball check valves control fluid transfer. Conversely, gear, screw and lobe pump technologies use fixed tolerances to control slip, which means that they are unable to adequately adjust to viscosity changes. 4) Pump Construction Quality pump construction is a key when handling dangerous chemicals, and using a pump designed with the right materials is important to the safety of a plant. To satisfy these demands, AODD pumps are available in a wide range of materials of construction in order to meet a variety of chemicalhandling needs. Common chemical-pump materials include polypropylene, Kynar, stainless steel, ductile iron and Hastelloy, with some companies, like Wilden, possessing the capability to offer special materials like super duplex when really unique materials are required to ensure uninterrupted production processes and the safety of plant personnel. If metal pumps are required, one overlooked material in the chemicalChemical Products Finder | October-November 2018 | 23

processing world is ductile iron, which works well in both acidic and basic pH application ranges of 4 to 10. Provided that the chemical compatibility is correct, operators who use ductile-iron pumps can realize all of the benefits of stainless steel, but at a lower price point. Wilden has a range ductile iron pumps available in bolted, sealless designs. A bolted design can offer the best features for the user since bolted pumps do not, as mentioned earlier, rely on packing or expensive mechanical seals to prevent leaks. In this case, the most important benefit of bolted pumps is their ability to offer the highest level of product containment. This is critical for two main reasons: many raw or finished chemicals
are high-value products and any loss through leakage can be detrimental to the operation’s bottom line and, second, most chemicals can be harmful to humans and the environment. A final benefit is that all Wilden bolted metal pumps also have improved flow paths for increased flow rates. This enhanced flow capability can allow the operator to use, for example, a 1.5-inch pump where a 2-inch model may have been required in the past, which equates into capital-cost savings. Conclusion Thanks to its simple yet innovative design, the AODD pump has proven to be able to consistently meet the demands of chemical processors while building a
Putting The Pieces Together Everyone knows that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. In the industrial world it can be said that a pumping system used in chemical-processing applications is only as reliable, efficient and safe as its weakest component.
reputation as a go-to pumping technology where basic fluid-transfer capabilities are required. The AODD pump, which possesses a stable of notable operational characteristics, has become a first-choice technology for chemical manufacturers who are searching for a pump that meshes cost-conscious air consumption with reliable and safe production rates. Based in Grand Terrace, CA, USA, Wilden is the global leader in air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps and a product brand of PSG, a Dover company. Headquartered in Oakbrook Terrace, IL, USA, PSG is comprised of several of the world’s leading pump brands, including Abaque®, Almatec®, Blackmer®, Ebsray®, Finder, Griswold™, EnviroGear®, Mouvex®, Neptune™, Quattroflow™, RedScrew™ and Wilden®. For more information on Wilden or PSG, please go to wildenpump.com or psgdover.com. ◘
That’s why Wilden has devoted so much time and effort to making its many models of air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps and their components the industry standard for chemical-processing applications. It is also why Wilden recommends that chemical processors construct their pumping systems with their industry-leading AODD pump, air distribution system (ADS) and diaphragm technologies: •Bolted Metal AODD Pumps: Feature chemically compatible ductile-iron construction with a re-engineered flow path that can increase flow rates by up to 54 per cent. They are direct drop-in replacements for existing models and are designed with fewer fasteners for faster assembly/disassembly for shorter downtime. • Pro-Flo SHIFT ADS: Stainless-steel construction and a revolutionary design allows the AODD pump to achieve up to a 60 per cent savings in air consumption over competitive AODD pump technologies, while providing higher flow rates per SCFM. Also costs 50 per cent less to operate than electronically actuated ADS units, is submersible and has fewer operating parts, which reduces maintenance and repair downtime. • Chem-Fuse Integral Piston Diaphragms (IPD): Chem-Fuse IPDs solve many of the critical issues faced by chemical companies that generally rely on conventional diaphragms. Chem-Fuse IPDs eliminate the potential leak point at the outer piston when pumping critical or dangerous fluids. They also eliminate any outer-piston abrasion for up to six times the diaphragm life, depending on the application, especially when pumping abrasive fluids. Lastly, for faster product changeovers and the prevention of product contamination, Chem-Fuse IPDs are quick and easy to clean. The inclusion of these components can create a simple and successful equation for the plant operator: AODD Pumps + Pro-Flo SHIFT ADS + Chem-Fuse Diaphragms = Chemical-Processing Success.

f you own refrigerated trucks or trailers, you know that every inch of space counts. Insulating these to reduce heat loss with something thick means you lose valuable cargo space. The same is true for buildings with solid walls that need to be insulated for energy efficiency and to reduce energy costs. Insulating a 4,000 SF metal building to reduce heating/cooling costs with a foam or fiberglass insulation could take up approximately 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) of your space along each exterior wall, potentially reducing the usable area of your building by over 3 per cent. Another tight area where thick insulation is just not possible is onboard ships, where space is at a premium. Insulating hot pipes and equipment with a thick covering means the headway or walkway space is even more severely limited.
with additional abrasion and chemical resistance. The 1-part clear coatings are applied at just 100 microns (0.0039 inches) per coat and dry to just 19 microns; about the same thickness as a coat of paint. A typical application is between 3 to 6 coats. So, even at 6 coats, you have taken up just 0.0044” of space in dry film thickness. The 2-part heavy-duty industrial coating, Heat Shield EPX-H 2O is a little thicker at 254 microns (0.01”) per coat, but still very thin when compared to inches of older insulating materials. A typical 6 coat application of the coating on a pipe or oven would be just 0.06” (less than one tenth of an inch!) Any area can benefit from a thinner insulation, but here are a few where it is particularly useful: • Solid block walls
Here are two examples that illustrate their insulating and energy saving abilities. Case Study – South Africa Paper Mill Surface: Steam Pipe Product: Heat Shield EPX-H 2O (2-part coating) Number of Coats: 6 Total applied thickness: 1.5 mm (0.25 mm per coat) Cure time after application: 24 hours Uncoated Temperature: 138 oC (280.4 oF) EPX-H 2O Insulated Temperature: 50 oC (122 oF) Temperature Reduction: -88 oC (-158.4 oF) Goals achieved: Reduce surface temperature to a safe touch level for personnel safety and save energy. Case Study – Container Vessel Surface: Tubular system and tanks of the HFO system
These are all examples of where thin film thermal insulation coatings (TIC) provide the best solution…a combination of excellent thermal insulation in a thin film coating that takes up very little space, just microns rather than inches.
• Metal buildings
• Pleasure boat cabins
Total dry film thickness: 200 microns
Insulation Does not Have to Be Thick to Work Well! The mechanism behind a leading innovative product, Synavax patented thermal insulation coatings, is the unique material used that reduces heat conduction in a very thin layer. Thousands of these heat transfer reducing particles are in each thin layer of their coatings, doing the work of a thicker insulation at just fractions of the thickness.
• Transport vehicles and trailers
Fuel Costs % Reduction: 30 per cent
These thermal insulation coatings come in two main systems, one is a smooth finish 1-part clear film insulation coating and the other is a textured finish 2-part grey or white thermal insulation coating
• Cathedral ceilings • Ships
• Shipping containers converted to building space • Equipment in tight areas (like textile process drying cans)
Product: Heat Shield High Heat (1-part coating) Number of Coats: 6
Diesel Fuel Use for Reduction: Saved 360 liters per 24 hours Payback Achieved: Within 95 days of sailing
• Ovens or dyeing machines that open/ close often
Goals achieved: Lower fuel costs, prevent corrosion, insulate in highly moist area and area with little space.
So, how well do thin film insulation coatings work? They not only are comparable to rockwool, fiberglass and other types of insulation, they are also resistant to moisture infiltration, so they do not degrade as quickly, plus protect surfaces from corrosion and corrosion under insulation (CUI).
Clearing Up Thermal Insulation Coating Misconceptions These patented thermal insulation coatings disrupt conventional thinking about how to insulate. No longer do facilities have to suffer from corrosion under insulation (CUI) or use insulation that harbours dirt, dust and mould. Chemical Products Finder | October-November 2018 | 25

Other insulation testing standards are designed for any type of thermal barrier, including thin film coatings. These coatings have been tested by multiple independent laboratories and have demonstrated a decrease in heat transfer of 34.8 per cent at a 3-coat application (ISO 8990:1999) and an increase in thermal resistance of 40 per cent at 6 coats (UKAS Guarded Hot Plate). This unique and patented technology is able to significantly reduce heat transfer in a thin film coating layer.
Figure 1: Thin film industrial insulation coating being sprayed in a tight area of an oven exterior.
Thermal insulation coatings offer a whole new way to insulate in a thin film layer and also have multiple other benefits, such as corrosion-prevention, mould/mildewresistance, UV resistance and more.
Synavax coatings do not have an R-value because the R-value testing methods were made for thicker insulations and do not properly measure the thermal resistance of thin film thermal insulation coatings.
Misconception 2: Insulation Just Does not Last Very Long While a short lifespan is often the case with fiberglass, mineral wool and other older insulation technologies, you do not have to resign yourself to a short insulation lifespan when you use thin film thermal insulation coatings. Because these coatings are highly moisture repellent and resistant to infiltration by dust, dirt, mould and other contaminants, they have a long lifespan (5-20 years or more, depending upon application) and just as importantly, they maintain
But with any new technology there can be certain misconceptions from those that are not familiar with it. Despite the multiple added benefits from using thin film TICs rather than older fibrous insulation, some facilities still drag their feet about upgrading to this newer material because they do not quite understand it. Here are few misconceptions about TICs cleared up: Misconception 1: Insulation Has to Be Thick and Have an R-value The whole reason for insulation is to reduce heat transfer. If you have a steam pipe, you insulate it to reduce heat loss from the pipe, thus saving energy. You also might insulate it to reduce the temperature, so it will not burn people. For buildings, insulation is used to reduce heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. But nowhere do the laws of thermal dynamics state that you have to have a thick material to reduce heat transfer. 26 | October-November 2018 | Chemical Products Finder

Misconception 3: Insulation Coatings are Hard to Apply Some people unfamiliar with thermal insulation coatings may jump to the conclusion that they will be harder to apply than fiberglass/rockwool and cladding. But the opposite is true.
Conclusion Insulating pipes, tanks, equipment and buildings with thinner insulation opens up many benefits, including more freedom of design. For example, if you only need a few millimeters of insulation on your piping that means more pipes can be located within the same space.
These insulation coatings do not need any exterior covering, so no struggling with aluminium sheeting and trying to screw it on to fit pipes, valves and elbows.
Factory and building layouts can be optimized for peak efficiency because less space needs to be factored into the plan for insulation.
Synavax coatings can be applied while equipment is in operation and surface temperature is as high as 204oC (400oF).
Space savings is a benefit for multiple industries, and it is a great reason to begin upgrading to thermal insulation coatings.
They are the future of insulation and hold much promise for sustainability in multiple sectors, including manufacturing, buildings, transportation, and oil and gas. Once you get past some of the common misconceptions, making the case to your organization for TICs will provide a reward in energy savings, safety and asset protection for many years to come. â—˜

Material Handling - An Essential Function in The Supply Chain Cycle Companies need to ensure that this section is regularly maintained because it plays a vital role in managing inter nal and exter nal manufacturing operations
T
he material handling and supply chain industry is a dynamic industry that keeps experiencing innovative technologies and emerging ideas. Several trends make an entry and the industry evolves to a new level with companies revamping operations to incorporate the new drift. The material handling system plays a vital role in managing internal and external manufacturing operations. The material handling products aid air transportation and storage of material in a highly systematic manner which reduces the risk of handling and transporting raw material. This augments the operational efficacy, streamlines the supply chain and handles warehouse operations through optimum utilisation. It lowers the handling cost, reduces inventory and shortens delivery time. So, there are very bright prospects for MHE industry within the manufacturing sector in general. It is better for companies to ensure that their material handling system and processes are in place for improved customer service, reduction of inventory, shorter delivery time, and lower overall handling costs in manufacturing, distribution and transportation. The global manufacturing landscape is being transformed by digital technologies such as the IoT and robotics collectively called “Fourth Industrial Revolution” or “Industry 4.0”. It is important that companies should ensure that the advanced technologies related to this revolution are a part of the material handling section too. Making a few changes as per a good material handling department to your warehousing operations can bring in several benefits.

In a country like India where the manufacturing sector is coming up as a high growth sector, the material handling industry assumes increasing importance. India is expected to become the fifth largest manufacturing country in the world by the end of year 2020. Material handling is primarily related to the movement, storage protection, and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption and disposal. Material handling also includes a host of manual, semi-automated and automated equipment and systems that support logistics and make the supply chain work. In India, Material Handling Equipment (MHE) is one of the most important elements of manufacturing sector. The budding manufacturing industries such as chemicals, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverages augment the demand for warehouses to store and manage their products. This increasing demand for automated storage, retrieval systems along with industrial trucks in the manufacturing industry shall be a key driver for industry growth in the near future due to rising investments in installing the equipment at distribution centres as well as warehouses. The effective material handling system gives impetus to the operational efficacy, streamlines the supply chain and handles warehouse operations through optimum utilisation. This process also helps in lowering the handling cost, reducing inventory and shortening delivery time. In India, the MHE industry has very bright prospects within the manufacturing sector.
Of late, this industry has started focussing more and more on automation, cost reduction, real time tracking of shipments, reducing environmental impact, and collection and utilisation of data to improve efficiencies. Companies are procuring certain quantity of raw materials to deliver at various locations. They then develop reports on inventory, pricing, order status, etc, through ERP system to get real time alerts. This is great to have better control on pricing, inventory and timely deliveries to customers. Adherence to safety requirements and telematics are some of the chief drivers for new MHE solutions. Companies have realised that the main benefit of telematics is that it has led to increased safety which results in cost saving since it helps avoid accidents, injuries and damages. The other benefits of telematics are gauging maintenance, eliminating idling, keeping track of vehicles and improve routing. In countries like India, the other drivers which are leading to growth in MHE product revenues are automation, shortage of skilled labours, and enhanced focus on safety. Adherence to safety requirement helps for less breakdown time to ensure consistent supplies which leads to a business growth. For larger volumes in procurement, an extensive reliance on strong ERP systems becomes a necessity for prompt alerts for corrective and controlling activities which make inventory available on time. This also prevents fund lock-up in excessive inventories. Close monitoring of RM prices with the help of strong ERP system is absolutely essential to protect bottom

optimize shelve spacing. This is also to minimize the chance of losing the small items.
An effective ERP (enterprise resource planning) or inventory management solution is also a good option to help by generating inventory requirements so companies can reduce on-hand inventory without reducing customer service levels or increasing stockouts. What the result is that if there is lesser inventory it means space occupied is less. So in general warehousing and storage management performance improves automatically.
There are some essential aspects needed to apply good materials handling. If companies are manually handling materials and products for distribution, storage, etc, it is better to utilize workers who will serve as material handlers. They could go to the store, distribute, etc, all the goods to their proper destinations. To ensure good material handling, effective material handlers are a pre-requisite and these are people who are well-trained in the task they are to perform. This will ensure they are going to perform materials handling well for the safety of other workers and the products.
Companies can understand the physical features of their warehouse and what materials they need to store and then take into account its flow. The next step would be to slot the warehouse to optimize storage. Frequently picked items have to be stored near the front in order to reduce the travel time within the warehouse, and small and large items should be stored in different racks to
Another requirement is efficient material handling storage systems. Companies that want to apply materials handling also need to look into efficient storage systems. This refers to storage systems that are functional and automated, and
can handle materials well so that time, money and effort would be saved. Materials handling is an extensive field if the materials that are being moved or stored are large. This process can be the cause of many warehouse accidents so care has to be taken. Companies should ensure that they are applying good materials handling process by hiring expert workers and buying efficient storage systems. â—˜

CENTRIFUGAL PUMP NeoMag is a high-performance, magnetically coupled standard centrifugal pump made from SS with a borosilicate canister, the patented BOROHARDCAN. The single-stage, non-selfpriming NeoMag pump has been developed based on the latest findings in fluid and hydraulic technology. The installation and replacement are simple thanks to modular design. With the NeoMag pump energy savings of up to 30% are possible, since the BOROHARDCAN consists of an electrically non-conductive material, whereby it does not generate any eddy currents. Hence, the pump as well as the motor and the coupling can be dimensioned smaller than before. This reduces not only the investment costs, but also the subsequent costs during operation. The NeoMag pump technology is hermetically sealed via the magnetic coupling and the canister, and therefore functions absolutely leakage-free and almost wear-free. The NeoMag pump is equipped with a soft start feature, which prevents an unnecessary stress on the aggregate. During the development of the NeoMag, it was possible to increase the hydraulic efficiency by various geometric optimisations, eg, of the impeller, to just over 70%. Such an optimization offers further energy and cost saving potentials. It finds application in water management, industrial and chemical applications, petro chemistry/mineral oil, process engineering and technology, pharma industry, biotechnology and food industry. NEW XELUM R&D Bosch Packaging Technology offers its R&D device for the continuous production of oral solid dosage (OSD) forms. The platform ensures a short time to market and optimum dosing of APIs. As opposed to the common complex mass flow rate, excipients and active ingredients are dosed as a discrete mass in the Xelum R&D. This makes it possible to dose even smallest amounts of APIs of less than one per cent. The system doses, mixes and granulates individual packages, so-called X-keys, which continuously run through the process chain and are removed successively from the machine as packages into bins. Current continuous production systems for wet granulation mostly use twin screw granulators. The Xelum system relies on fluid bed processors developed by the Bosch subsidiary Hüttlin. In the fluid bed, granulation and drying take place in the same process chamber. Pharma manufacturers obtain granulates with the desired characteristics including unimodal particle size distribution, as well as excellent flow and tableting properties combined with high production yields. The controls of the Xelum R&D correspond to a modern production system. All relevant process parameters are continuously recorded. The production and the product transfer, as well as the cleaning process are recipe-controlled and ensure reproducible results. The user-friendly handling of the system is complemented by a DoE (Design of Experiment) software support. SHEET METAL STRUCTURED PACKING EVERPACK SM Column Packing is the sheet metal version of the popular EVERPACKWM (wire mesh) and HYFLUX (knitted wire mesh) packing. Their development is a part of EVERGREEN’s continuous and comprehensive development program to improve column packing performance. EVERPACK SM is supplied in modules, which consists of parallel layers of uniquely designed embossed sheet metal strips which are corrugated and arranged vertically. These modules are then stacked with an alternating 90 degree orientation of every other layer which gives a good lateral distribution of liquid. The embossed metal strips help to draw the liquid in all directions into a thin film and provides a marked improvement in uniform wetting of the packing bed. With the improved internal liquid distribution, high volumetric mass transfer efficiency is achieved and low pressure drop is maintained. Also because liquid is evenly distributed through the packing as a thin film, the total liquid hold-up in the packing is substantially reduced. The standard packing version has specific surface area of 250 m2/m3 (EVERPACK SMY 250). However, other variants with specific surface areas of 125 m2/m3 (SMY 125), 175 m2/m3 (SMY 175), 350 m2/m3 (SMY 350), 500 m2/m3 (SMY 500), 750 m2/m3 (SMY 750) and X crimp (60 degree crimp alignment) are also. Evergreen Technologies Pvt Ltd also manufacture high efficiency column internals (distributors, collectors, support grids, etc). Good initial distribution together with systematic redistribution is critical to optimum tower performance. It finds application in vacuum distillation where relatively low pressure drop is critical to maintaining low bottom temperatures to reduce products degradation; atmospheric operations where a large number of theoretical stages are required and/or where there are restrictions to overall column height; debottlenecking/energy reduction programs with the advantages of a high efficiency packing used to reduce reflux requirements and increase throughputs; and increase product purity which is possible due to availability of more equilibrium stages from same size column. AMINE CONTACTOR TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT Temperature control is essential in amine contactors in order to minimise foaming and carry over. Quality temperature information also helps operators optimise contactor/stripper performance by locating where most of the heat of absorption profile is taking place. If temperature is too high, dirty process could be carried out of the contactor. If it is too low, stripper column energy is wasted. The Gayesco multipoint thermocouple array for amine contactors can be retrofit into existing contactors often through an unused nozzle or old thermowell location. The multipoint thermocouple array is threaded through the contactor trays and sized so that there is a measuring junction at specific tray heights. Typically 18 trays are instrumented for temperature, allowing the operator a picture of how the contactor is performing and providing the necessary tools to optimise performance. The cooler the lean amine temperature, the better H2S absorption. However, temperature below the gas inlet temperature can cause hydrocarbons to condense and possibly foam. The lean amine solution temperature needs to be higher than the feed gas to the amine contactor and good temperature indications are essential for smooth operation. The dirty process enters the column at relatively low temperature and is exposed to the lean amine. Adsorption is exothermic and the process fluid will experience a rise in temperature. Optimally, the bulk adsorption is done low in the contactor with the remaining height removing the remaining acid gas to low exit level conditions. By knowing where that heat of adsorption rise is taking place, the operator now knows where the bulk of the acid gas removal is going on and can made adjustments to the flow rate and energy consumption of the unit to maximise efficiency. The Gayesco multipoint thermocouple array for amine contactors utilises a linear multipoint design with multiple junctions inside a single sheath. This allows for a large number of thermocouples in a small cross-sectional area and minimum interference with the process flow in the contactor. The thermocouples are ungrounded and available in a variety of types and sheath metallurgies. The sheath passes through contactor trays and is supported by specialised hardware that is easily assembled in the field and does not require any welding or hot work during installation. HORIZONTAL FLOW WRAPPING MACHINE Hermetic packages protect pharma products from external influences like humidity, oxygen and light. The new Sigpack HML from Bosch Packaging Technology, allows products such as blow-fillseal vial cards, blisters and various medical technology products including pens and inhalers to be reliably hermetically packaged. The Sigpack HML is suitable for the production of both small and large batches. Depending on the desired output volume, the film reels can either be changed manually during short machine stops or with the help of a splicer. The improved splicer fully automatic connects the old and new film to avoid disturbances, such as at the film former. Products are delivered to the flow wrapping machine via a transport chain. The transverse and longitudinal film sealing uses the proven Longdwell heat sealing technology. The machine achieves an output of up to 350 sealed packages per minute. The sealing rolls used for horizontal wrapping can be opened from both sides. This prevents the film from coming into contact with the heated sealing rolls, and from being damaged during machine downtime. For particularly temperature-sensitive products, the cover plates at the sealing station can be cooled. The Sigpack HML is also available with ultrasonic sealing, allowing customers to gently package heat-sensitive products. The Sigpack HML can be equipped with options for additional product protection, such as the “no gap no seal” function. This is especially used for product piles in blister or BFS packages, which is checked once again shortly before it reaches the cross-sealing. If the pile is not in the correct position, the cross-sealing stops. This avoids product rejection or damaged sealing jaws. The optional MAP module (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) offers optimal product stability by removing residual oxygen from the hermetic packages. Sensors precisely monitor and regulate the gas content of the packages. Based on the Bosch systems competence, the Sigpack HML can be combined with other equipment, like cartoning machines as well as track and trace systems for seamless traceability of the packaged products. PROCESS HEATING CONTROL & MONITORING Thermon Group Holdings, Inc (Thermon) offers TraceNet Genesis Control & Monitoring System, a new solution for managing heat trace circuit performance on process lines, tanks and instrumentation. The TraceNet Genesis System gives instant access to comprehensive heat trace circuit information, including circuit performance history, fault analysis, and circuit drawings. Using this information, maintenance personnel can predict failures avoiding downtime or quickly restore operations minimizing downtime. The TraceNet Genesis System provides instant on-panel access to heat trace circuit performance trending and histories of up to 6 months, for up to 72 heat trace circuits. Until now, this capability was only available by networking back to a remote computer. A six-month history that reflects, eg, fluctuations or a steady decay in temperature could indicate that the system requires inspection to see whether the thermal insulation is being compromised or if an individual heater is not operating properly. By analysing this data, maintenance engineers can assess the timing, process operating conditions, and any undesirable symptoms as an early indicator of a future problem. This type of data is critical to effective circuit and overall system maintenance. Another unique feature of the TraceNet Genesis System lies in its ability to allow circuit isometric drawings to be stored and viewed locally, at the heat trace panel. As a result, maintenance engineers can quickly determine the circuit’s precise location and quickly respond to alerts. For the first time, isometric drawings need not be viewed from a remote computer monitor, but are presented on the local TraceNet Genesis touchscreen at the panel. The TraceNet Genesis System includes an easy-to-navigate touchscreen user interface. With a single touch, the user can easily navigate into circuit details in order to modify set points, manage alarms, see trending or view a drawing. SURFACE TREATMENT The nsd tupH surface treatment offered by NORD DRIVESYSTEMS is an outstanding anti-corrosion treatment for gear units, smooth motors, frequency inverters and motor starters in washdown-optimised cast aluminium housings. Applying a special method, the surface is made corrosion-resistant and harder; in this way, aluminium behaves like stainless steel with regard to corrosion protection. This is not a coating, but the surface treatment creates a protective layer which is permanently bonded to the substrate material. In contrast to painting or coating, nothing can detach or flake off. Damages remain locally restricted and do not propagate. The surface is easy to clean and largely resistant to acids and alkalis. It is even possible to use high pressure cleaners or a great variety of aggressive media. For nsd tupH aluminium drive units, all DIN and standard components, including drive shafts, are made from stainless steel. The fanless smooth motors do not spread germs and run very quietly. They are available as synchronous and asynchronous motors and comply with efficiency classes IE2 and IE3 (asynchronous motors) and IE4 (synchronous motors). NORD drives with nsd tupH comply with FDA Title 21 CFR 175.300 and for this reason are suitable for food application. They have been successfully tested according to ASTM D714 (blistering, ASTM D610-08 (corrosion), ASTM D1654-08 according to DIN EN ISO 2409 (scratching), ASTM B117-09 according to DIN EN ISO 9227 (salt spray test) and ASTM D3170 (Gravelometer). In addition, their resistance to common cleaning agents which are used in the food industry has been confirmed in tests. The nsd tupH surface treatment is advantageous for all drives used under extreme environmental conditions and for hygienically critical applications. This also includes the beverage and food industry, water treatment and sewage plants as well as offshore and onshore applications. PUSH-THROUGH STRIPS Together with Huhtamaki, the film and foil specialist, Romaco Siebler will premiere a push-through strip packaging for pharmaceuticals. The tablets can be removed simply by pressing them out of the pockets in the four-sided sealed foil pack. This innovative pushthrough strip thus combines the excellent barrier properties of strip packaging with the opening mechanism of blister formats. In direct comparison with cold formed aluminium blisters, the push-through strip scores with its lower consumption of packaging material. The thinner foil of the heat-sealed strips enables cost savings here. The new push-through strips are manufactured either from a multilayer laminated PET-PE-Al-PE/Surlyn foil or from a transparent barrier foil. The material does not tear and can therefore be regarded as child resistant. Thanks to the targeted perforation of the upper polyester layer, the pack can be opened simply by pressing the tablet out of the laminated foil with the thumb. The push-through strips are also senior friendly and as such a good alternative to tear-open strip packaging or aluminium-aluminium blisters. Huhtamaki has a patent pending for the manufacturing process used for this special foil. Romaco’s new push-through strips can be supplied either in the standard rectangular format or as so-called design strips. A Siebler HM 1-350 heat-sealing machine equipped with a special die-cutter is used to manufacture special formats. The continuous cutting station supports both round strip formats and heart, petal or even star-shaped ones. The Siebler HM 1-350 achieves a max output of 800 design strips per minute. The production of push-through strips in a heat-sealing process expands Romaco’s portfolio in the area of air, light and moisture-tight unit dose packaging. There has been a significant jump in number of Drug Approvals from 7,857 before GST July 1, 2016 to June 20, 2017 to 10,446 post-GST July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Under the ‘One Nation, One Tax’ regime, the removal of complexity of multiple taxes has reduced their cascading effect on the final product. GST is expected to decrease the manufacturing cost in view of merging of different taxes levied earlier and promote ease of doing business. It will create one single market for all stakeholders with equal chance towards development. Moreover discontinuation of Central Sales Tax post-GST, will reduce transaction costs, as inter-state transaction between two dealers will become tax neutral. Now, the pharma companies can consolidate their warehouses at strategic locations, effecting a reduction in cost of distribution. As a result, it will benefit warehouse strategy and improve supply chain efficiency in pharma sector.
hte develops accelerated catalyst aging protocol for hydrotreatment application together with MOL G hte – the high throughput experimentation company has been commissioned by MOL Group to develop an accelerated catalyst aging protocol for a diesel hydrotreatment application. With the results, MOL will be able to better predict long-term performance when selecting refining catalysts. Selecting the right catalyst in a refinery is crucial for optimizing economic profit and efficiency. When selecting a new diesel hydrotreatment catalyst it is important to consider the start of run activity and selectivity, but also to predict the lifetime, which can be several years. Evaluating long-term stability can be costly and time-consuming. Hence, hte has been commissioned by MOL to develop an accelerated catalyst aging protocol. This protocol simulates catalyst deactivation under realistic process conditions but with a much reduced test duration. Aging catalysts under actual process conditions provides more reliable information about long-term stability than empirical laboratory aging protocols. The project was completed in the third quarter of 2018. With the results, MOL is able to predict the long-term activity of its pre-selected catalysts. "Diesel hydrotreatment is an important refinery process. Being able to predict catalyst activity during the entire life span gives us more confidence in selecting the right catalyst for our refineries," says Thomas Raetzsch, Head of Downstream Research and Development at MOL Group. "We are pleased that MOL has chosen to work with hte again. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with MOL and our role in the European refining market," says Wolfram Stichert, CEO at hte. He adds that this type of protocol is adaptable to other processes and will be included in hte’s R&D Solutions offering.

Shalimar has also pledged further investment into its Nashik plant and aims to establish it as a key component within its regional distribution network, as well as its pan-India supply chain. The paint industry has been growing at a rapid rate in India and measures between 1.5 to 2 times GDP growths. Rapid urbanization, better transparency and consumer evolvement has been leading the growth of the industry. Songwon Industrial Co Ltd a specialty chemicals company of South Korea has launched its new pilot plant in Panoli (Gujarat), thereby strengthening the organisation’s overall specialty chemicals development capability. Built on Songwon’s Indian site with all the necessary main unit operations, the new plant is equipped with the most up-to-date technologies and materials for producing a wide range of chemicals for a broad spectrum of applications - from one kilo up to several hundred kilo samples. To reinforce the organisation’s position in existing areas of business and enhance its ability to enter new areas, the new pilot plant will be supported by the Songwon’s strong local R&D team in Panoli, as well as its central technology innovation center located in Maeam, Korea. Insecticides (India) Ltd has announced a ` 200-crore expansion plan to increase its capacity in the next three years. In the first two years, it would spend about ` 100-crore, followed by an investment of ` 100-crore in 2020. The firm is planning to set up an Export Oriented Unit in Gujarat with an eye on increasing export component of the business. Exports contributed about ` 35-crore in the total turnover of ` 1,109-crore in 2017-18. The firm has a share of about 5 per cent in the ` 18,000-crore crop protection market in the country. MINING NTPC Ltd hopes its captive coal production will reach 100 million tonne as soon as its five coal blocks commence operations, aided by faster regulatory clearances and the part-privatization model of Mine Development and Operator (MDO). The success of the plan would determine fuel security of the operations of India's largest power producer. Coal India aims to raise output from its troubled Rajmahal mine in Jharkhand to 60,000 tonnes a day by March 2019, having resolved landacquisition related problems which had crimped production to 20,000 tonnes per day. Coal from the Rajmahal mine helps NTPC run close to 4,200 MW of power generation plants in eastern India, which supply power to Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, and also to northern India including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. NTPC’s generation capacities were faced with depleting coal stocks and lower power generation as supplies from Rajmahal dwindled. Reserves at Rajmahal within the land acquired 52 | October-November 2018 | Chemical Products Finder
by Coal India were almost exhausted and required expansion to keep production levels intact. However, land acquisition at two villages Bansbiha and Taljhari - spanning 160 hectares, adjacent to the existing project turned out to be a lengthy process, as sorting out ownership issues resulted in inordinate delay. It led to drastic fall in supplies and stocks at the coalfield, as well as at two critical power plants in the region - at Farakka and Kahalgaon. At present, Coal India is using 15 goods trains to transport coal from the Rajmahal mine to power stations in the region. One goods train can load up to 3,500 tonnes of coal. Coal India is also sending five loaded goods trains from West Bengal’s Ranigunj coalfields to augment supplies at power stations. At present, the entire production from Rajmahal is getting delivered to power plants and there has been no stock buildup yet. CIL, ONGC to produce coal-bed methane from 10 new mines: support SAIL in one more. The Coal Ministry has identified 11 mines to produce coal bed methane (CBM). Of these, 10 will be worked on jointly by ONGC and Coal India Ltd (CIL). The two entities will also work on one mine with SAIL. Initially, ONGC will harness the gas and then CIL will extract coal from them …the first agreement for harnessing CBM through this route is expected to be signed soon. In addition to the mines with CIL, the two (ONGC and CIL) will also help develop Steel Authority of India Ltd’s Parbatpur coal block (Jharkhand). Here, too, ONGC will first harness the CBM. SAIL had surrendered the Sitanala and Parbatpur coal mines this year. In its representations while surrendering the Parbatpur mine, SAIL had said there was a reduction in the area available for coal mining due to overlapping of mining area. SAIL had engaged MECON to prepare a techno commercial viability report, which declared the project unviable. The SAIL board had then decided to return the Parbatpur mine to the Coal Ministry. OIL & GAS Indian Oil Corporation, with the final clearance from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), is all set to re-start construction activities at its ` 2,200-crore LPG import terminal-cum-pipeline project at Puthuvypeen near Kochi. Necessary orders in this regard have been issued by the Kerala government and the work is expected to commence in January. The NGT judgment has made it amply clear that there is no environmental pollution in the Puthuvypeen project. IOCL has adopted global standards on safety measures and one-third of the cost is being spent on safety. The risk analysis study conducted by Projects & Development India Ltd has estimated the risk factor in a million chances per year. The Kochi terminal, with the pipelines connecting the bottling plant, will eliminate the movement of bulk LPG by road, citing the removal of LPG tanker lorry movement from Mangaluru to Tamil Nadu after the commissioning of Ennore terminal. The Kochi project consists of an import terminal, multiuser liquid terminal (MULT) jetty, Kochi-Salem pipeline and the bulk LPG terminal at Palakkad with a total investment of ` 2,200-crore. Of this, the ` 225-crore jetty is ready and the company has invested another ` 160-crore for construction activities. The physical progress of the work is only 40 per cent complete, which includes ground improvement, land development, etc. Early completion of the project will ensure LPG availability to the households across the counter. Kerala presently has an average waiting period of 15 days to receive a LPG refill. This could go up if the infrastructure expansion does not happen. Referring to LPG consumption in the State, it was 8.4 lakh tonnes in 2016-17, which would
CPC Corp of Taiwan is planning to invest $ 6.6 bn in petrochemical project in Paradip, Odisha. In this regard, delegation led by CPC president ShunChin Lee met the Indian Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas to discuss the proposal. With an annual production capacity of 15 million tonnes, the Indian Oil Corpn’s (IOC), Paradip Refinery was selected to host the new project, which will utilise the refinery’s feedstock. It will have many downstream units for the production of a wide range of end-products and petrochemical intermediates. The National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NITT) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) have jointly established a biogas plant with a capacity to process one metric tonne of kitchen waste from the hostel. The biogas plant called NISARGRUNA will process vegetable and food wastes and waste water generated from the hostel mess. The project was executed by the DTDDF (Department of Atomic Energy Technologies Display and Dissemination Facility) Centre that BARC had established in the NIT-T premises following a MoU signed with the institution last year. The BARC experts who briefed the NIT-T authorities about the operation principle said NISARGRUNA Biogas Plant will produce biogas containing 70-80 per cent of methane and only 30-20 per cent of carbon dioxide. Processing of one metric tonne of biodegradable waste creates will lead to production of 25-30 kg Methane gas and 50-90 kg manure per day. In comparison, conventional Gobar gas plants have a single digester and produce biogas containing 55-65 per cent of methane and 45-35 per cent of carbon dioxide. The gas generated from the NISARGRUNA Biogas Plant will be used as fuel in the messes for cooking. The weed-free manure has high nitrogen contents and acts as an excellent soil conditioner. It offers ‘Zero garbage and Zero effluent’, and this technology will be more helpful for the kitchen and solid waste management at NIT-T. The NIT-T has identified five villages for pursuing UNNAT Bharat Mission. The DTDDF centre will implement the BARC technologies in the villages. Vedanta Ltd plans to expand its alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Odisha to 6 million TPA by 2021 using alternate bauxite resources as it looks beyond. The firm believes there are enough alternate resources of bauxite available to feed the expansion and has moved beyond the previously pursued high-quality bauxite beneath the pristine Niyamgiri hills. The Lanjigarh plant produced around 1.2 million tonnes of alumina last fiscal and has a current capacity of 2 million tonnes. Refusing to give cost estimates, while the plant currently imports 2.5-3 million tonnes of bauxite and sources almost an equal volume from domestic mines, the expansion project would need a total of 18 million tonnes of bauxite annually. Vedanta had intended to supply the refinery with bauxite extracted from the Niyamgiri hills by a mining company owned by the state government, which backed the project. But protests from local villagers led to the union government and the Supreme Court blocking the move in 2013. Odisha has 700 million tonnes of known bauxite reserves, of which Niyamgiri holds an estimated 88 million tonnes. Odisha has 70 per cent of India's total bauxite reserves, the world's fifth-largest. Currently, costly bauxite is imported from as far as Brazil and Guinea at a port in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh before being moved by trains 275 km to
Lanjigarh. Vedanta has environmental and other clearances in place for the expansion and does not need any new land. Oil India Ltd has signed an agreement with five PSU JV Partners in Guwahati. This agreement is in connection with construction of North-East Gas Grid Pipeline project. The gas grid project will connect eight NorthEastern States, viz, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. The proposed JV Company will have equal equity contribution from all the five PSU JV Partners. Indian Oil Corpn (IOC) plans to invest ` 20,000-crore in city gas distribution (CGD) projects in the next five to eight years. IOC, which owns a third of India’s oil refining capacity identifies compressed natural gas (CNG) replacing some of the petrol and diesel consumed in vehicles today and LPG replaced by piped cooking gas in households. The company plans to invest at least ` 20,000-crore for the CGD business in those projects won during the ninth round of bids. The investment will mainly include setting up of CNG dispensing stations as well as laying pipelines in cities to transport gas to households for cooking purposes and industries for commercial use. According to oil ministry figures, India needs to invest an estimated $100 billion in natural gas infrastructure by 2022, including setting up a gas grid across 228 cities, Indraprastha Gas, India's biggest city gas retailer plans to add a record 60 CNG dispensing stations and give piped cooking gas connections to at least 2 lakh households this fiscal as it steps up efforts to achieve the government's target of a gas-based economy. IGL the company, which retails CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to household kitchens in Delhi and its suburbs, has adopted a dealer-franchise model in the push for rapidly expanding the network. The company, with 452 CNG stations in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Rewari, has started to give the franchise to dealers who own land. The company, which currently has over 9.6 lakh piped cooking gas customers, has a target to add 3 lakh this fiscal. The government is aggressively pushing for use of CNG as a transportation fuel to cut on use of polluting liquid fuels like diesel. It also wants PNG to replace costlier LPG in kitchens with a view to cut oil import dependence and push up the share of natural gas in the country's energy basket to 15 per cent from current 6.2 per cent. India currently imports 81 per cent of its oil needs. In its push towards a gas-based economy, the government is targeting 1 crore PNG connections by 2020. The country, currently, has 45.26 lakh household kitchens using natural gas as cooking fuel. Gujarat has the highest number of PNG users at 19.07 lakh, followed by Maharashtra at 12.73 lakh. Delhi ranks third. Both, Gujarat and Maharashtra have multiple companies retailing CNG and PNG. In 2018-19, the government is targeting 20 lakh PNG connections all over the country, up from 12 lakh of 2017-18. In 2019-20, the target is 40 lakh. ENERGY Juwi group has completed a 135-MW solar PV plant for Energon Soleq Ravi India Power Resources in the southern Indian State of Karnataka. The plant covers an area of 243 hectares and is situated near the village of Guttigoli, Belgaum district. It is expected to generate more than 226 million kWh of electricity each year. Operation and maintenance of the solar power plant will be performed by juwi India, which provides maintenance, monitoring and reporting services. With this project, juwi India’s current total O&M portfolio has reached 347-MW and is expected to cross 500MW by this year’s end. juwi has also finalised the contracts for building a portfolio of 250-MW in South Africa after being selected as preferred EPC contractor for three utility-scale PV projects in bidding round 4. Project Update
touch 13.2 lakh tonnes by 2022 and 22.7 lakh tonnes by 2028. India imports 50 per cent of its LPG requirements. With the boom in LPG requirement, imports are expected to go up. To meet the huge growth in volumes, infrastructure must be improved. LPG is imported through the major ports on the coast and there are 13 import terminals. Kochi is next on the list. The design of the terminal has been approved by regulatory agencies, who will inspect during the construction stage and prior to commissioning.
