“The markets are become global and every manufacturer has to raise its product quality and standards to meet the global expectations” “The Indian chemical industry, in the recent years has transformed drastically to meet the international global standards set by the developed market like US and Europe.
There was a time, few years
back when developed market products were considered good and developing market product were un-acceptable to that market. The same is not true today, as Indian manufacturers have raised their standard of products and successfully compete at par with developed market products. In order to manufacture such products, the need for good pumps and process plays an important role,” says Rajesh Malhotra, Managing Director of Everest Group. In an interview with Chemical Products Finder, he further discusses emerging trends in vacuum pump and blowers industry, growth potential of market, expansion plan for company and much more… Rajesh Malhotra Managing Director Everest Group What is the new development in the vacuum pumps sector? Vacuum Pump industry is fast growing in India. Currently this industry is dominated by foreign players as Vacuum Pumps and related technology is new to our country. Application of Vacuum finds use in Nuclear and semi conductor industry and for this reason, India was always kept at a distance and had a limited access to this technology. “Everest” has been working in vacuum related processes and technology and applied it to use in various Chemical processes including Pharma, Agro, Food Processing. Everest has developed new processes using combination of Vacuum

Pumps and allied accessories which is widely accepted by the Pharma and Chemical industry. Everest was the first to introduce high vacuum oil-free Boosters 20 years back and now is again the first Indian manufacturer to successfully design and manufacture Dry Screw, energy efficient Vacuum pumps, to meet the ever-growing industrial demand. Everest has to it’s credit development 100% indigenous MVR Mechanical Vapor Recompressor, both for pressure and vacuum duty applications. EVEREST Group companies are proud recipients of National Awards from the Hon PM, for their outstanding work in R&D and related areas.

Interview
Discuss the trends in the Blowers industry? Everest is pioneer in Blowers and Pumps covering the entire range -both pressure duty applications and vacuum duty applications. The group has two primary laterals, one catering to the pressure duty applications while the other caters to Vacuum duty applications. The both laterals are fast growing as there is consistant growth in both the sectors. The pressure duty applications cover Effluent Treatment Plants, Sewage Treatment Plants, Portable drinking water plants, Chemical plants, Pneumatic conveying applications, Furnace, process industries etc., whereas the vacuum applications cover Vacuum dryers, Used oil refining, edible oil refining, Zero discharge plants, Roll Metalizers, CVD and similar applications. How do vacuum pumps have an advantage over steam/water based pumps? Dry vacuum pumps are a great technical development over the conventional steam/water based pumps, mainly due to following reasons. • Highly energy efficient over the conventional steam/water based pumps. •
Since they do not require any motive fluid like water or steam the effect on environment is practically NIL.
•
They do not require any pre-treatment and post treatment plant like water softener or pollution equipment.
•
They are compact, reliable and easy to operate.
•
They allow greater level of automation and regulation, permitting greater process flexibility.
•
They are economical and have short payback period.
What is the growth potential in emerging markets related to the vacuum pumps/systems?
Vacuum industry in India is still in its infancy stage. There are very limited indigenous manufacturers offering products and services to global standards. This has created a market for foreign players and large quantum of advanced vacuum pumps, gauges and allied accessories are being imported. Now there is a growth in the Indian industries who are gearing up to meet the international levels of design and manufacture and this would result in a good growth in Vacuum Pumps and Blowers, especially when solutions offered are energy efficient and ecofriendly. The general awareness to conserve energy and minimize pollution is a great factor for all Companies to switch to modern pumps and blowers, replacing the old inefficient polluting options. What is the growth potential in emerging markets related to the Blowers industry? India is developing at a fast pace and is probably fastest growing economy as on date. Industrial development brings in improved process having least impact on the environment, consuming minimum energy, economical and reliable. Emerging markets, like India, have to go a long way for development of equipment and processes targeting low energy intake, High product quality and Zero effect on environment meeting our PM, Honl. Narender Modiji“ZED” concept - Zero Effect Zero Defect vision. EVEREST is able to offer all the above expectations for their pumps and blowers and expects a good growth in this segments. The same may not be true for industries who are not able to meet the expectations of the industry. What are the key factors driving the global industrial vacuum pump market? Application of medium to high Vacuum environment is finding use in practically all areas associated with Nuclear, Solar, Semiconductor, Space, Chemical, Pharma, Agro, Polymer, oil refining, Solvent recovery, Zero Discharge etc processes. The growth in the above sectors has

created in the need for quality, reliable Vacuum Pumps and allied equipment to improve the process making them energy efficient, fast and less polluting. The markets are become global and every manufacturer has to raise it’s product quality and standards to meet the global expectations. This global awareness has created opportunity for many to research in the vacuum field for new products and processes. Compare the chemical industry vacuum pump requirements of Asia Pacific (developing) markets with the US/Europe (developed) markets. The Indian chemical industry, in the recent years has transformed drastically to meet the international global standards set by the developed market like US and Europe. There was a time, few years back when developed market products were considered good and developing market product were unacceptable to that market. The same is not true today, as Indian manufacturers have raised their standard of products and successfully compete at par with developed market products. In order to manufacture such products, the need for good pumps and process plays an important role. Indian Companies have started in investing in-house R&D and moving away from “copy technology”. Today we have hundreds of products manufactured in India and accepted well in all developed countries. Everest has to it’s credits Export of Pressure and Vacuum systems to advanced counties line Germany and USA. What is the level of automation that is available for the pumps? and What are the customer demands in terms of the vacuum pumps? Improved processes and process reliability has raised the level of automation. Every process and allied equipments like pumps, blowers etc., go through many process variation and in order to work effectively

While centrifugal pumps have traditionally been the dominant technology in this realm, the flow-rate, viscosity and efficiency advantages of screw pumps make them a viable alternative
A
s human beings, we are programmed, whether consciously or subconsciously, to embrace the familiar. At the same time, when asked to complete a task, we are apt to identify the easiest way or choose the path of least resistance, to get it done. When these two things – familiarity and ease – merge, a sense of complacency can be created, a feeling that “this is the best way and there’s no reason to consider any others.” Which brings us to the oil-and-gas industry. It is a complicated business, one that spans from the discovery of underground reserves to their recovery, gathering, refining, manufacturing, transport, storage and eventual marketing as consumer goods ranging from motor fuels and asphalt to chemicals and cosmetics. Throughout the various point in this massive production and supply chain, pumps are required to move fluids and gases to and from numerous points.
can oftentimes be a more versatile, reliable and efficient choice than centrifugal pumps in critical fluid-handling operations in the wide-ranging oil-and-gas industry. The Challenge The most obvious challenge – and perhaps the toughest to overcome – in making the screw pump more prevalent in oil-and-gas applications is convincing the industry’s operators to move away from a technology that has become ingrained in their minds as the best one for numerous jobs. Generally speaking, the bulk of the fluids that are handled during oiland-gas production in North America have very low viscosities and must be transferred at very high flow rates, which plays to the operational strength of centrifugal pumps. Because centrifugal pumps have been successful in North America, other oil-
producing regions of the world, especially the Middle East, have taken great pains to replicate the North American production infrastructure, which includes significant use of centrifugal pumps. In many cases, oil-and-gas production and processing systems have been designed around the pumping technology, rather than the other way around. This means that engineers are first familiar with centrifugal pumps and attempt to work within their operational limits. They know how centrifugal pumps operate, know their benefits and are confident that they are the best technology for what they are trying to accomplish. To illustrate this mindset, in some cases a design engineer – instead of considering an alternative pumping technology – will blend or heat raw crude oil as a way to manipulate the process and get the viscosity of the fluid
For many years, the pumping technology of choice in many fluid-transfer applications in oil-and-gas production has been the centrifugal pump. To be fair, centrifugal pumps have performed admirably in these situations. Their method of operation – fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into the volute discharge port – makes them well designed for the high-volume, severe-duty transfer applications that are common in the industry. Centrifugal pumps also work especially well with thin, water-like fluids that must be transported through networks of piping with variable flow rates. So, it is easy to see why centrifugal pumps have gained a reputation as a goto technology in oil-and-gas fluid-handling applications. Still, there is an understandable sense of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” thinking when it comes to considering alternatives to centrifugal pumps by operators in the industry. This article, however, will illustrate how a different technology – positive displacement twin- and triple-screw pumps –

take longer, which may be costly • The performance of a centrifugal pump will be adversely affected when pumping a fluid that has a viscosity greater than 100 cSt. These inefficiencies will lead to higher utility bills and have an undoubted effect on the operation’s bottom line. The Solution As mentioned, the solution to the shortcomings of centrifugal pumps can be positive displacement (PD) screw pumps. The problem is not only overcoming the built-in advantages of the centrifugal pump’s vast installed base, but getting design engineers to acknowledge or even become aware that there are alternatives like screw pumps.
Blackmer S Series twin screw pumps with timing gear (WTG) have been designed with external bearings and a timing-gear transmission, which produces double-suction, self-priming operation with no metal-tometal contact between the pump’s internal components. This design helps the pump achieve the highest flow rates of any rotary PD pump, even at varying back-pressures and viscosity levels.
down to less than 300 cSt, which makes it easier for the centrifugal pump to transfer the fluid. What they are doing in this instance is reconditioning the fluid to fit the pumping technology – irrespective of the cost impact. In other words, when measures like this are taken to satisfy the needs of the pump, the popularity of centrifugal pumps in oiland-gas fluid-transfer applications becomes something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Despite the ability to recondition the fluid to meet the operational needs of the centrifugal pump, operators must still take care to ensure that the centrifugal pump is operating on what is known as its “Best Efficiency Point,” or BEP. The BEP is the point where the centrifugal pump is working at its highest level of efficiency. Centrifugal pumps rarely operate at their exact BEP because pristine pumping conditions are rarely realized, but a centrifugal pump that is able to function in a window between 80% and 110% of its BEP is said to be functioning adequately. However, when the operation of the pump moves too far off its BEP uneven pressure will be applied to the impeller, which can result
in increased radial thrust that will cause the pump’s shaft to “deflect.” When this deflection occurs, higher loads will be placed on the bearings and mechanical seal, which can lead to damage to the pump’s casing, back plate and impeller. Ensuring operation at the BEP can be a time-intensive task as the pump must be monitored constantly and adjusted, which costs time and money. Additionally, meeting production rates and quotas has always been job No 1 in oil-andgas operations, but as operating costs have continued to rise, there has been a call for increased operational efficiency in terms of the amount of energy that is required and consumed during pumping operations. In this area, centrifugal pumps can also fall short: • Due to pump-selection complexity, oversized pumps are often chosen, resulting in increased operating and maintenance costs, inefficient operation and higherthan-necessary energy consumption • As pump differential pressure increases, the flow rate decreases. Therefore, timesensitive operations that are dependent upon maintaining a constant flow rate will

Simply put, many engineers are not taught about screw pumps in their studies, and many who are aware of them have a preconceived notion of their shortcomings, or that they are nothing more than lube pumps capable of handing only low flow rates. In reality, today’s screw pumps have experienced remarkable advancements in terms of the flow rates that they can handle, with flow ranges from 220 gpm (833 L/min) to 11,000 gpm (41,635 L/min) not uncommon. In truth, the design of PD screw pumps makes them capable of handling various liquids – even those with higher viscosities, such as the crude oil that is now being recovered in some areas of Canada and the rest of the world. The operating principle sees opposed screws engaged to form a sealed cavity with the surrounding pump casing. As the drive screws turn, the fluid is shifted and steadily and constantly conveyed to the discharge port of the pump, which creates a volumetrically consistent flow rate regardless of the pumping pressure. The list of benefits provided by screw-pump technology in oil-and-gas fluid-handling applications is a long and impressive one: • Ability to handle a wide range of flows, pressures, liquid types and viscosities • Constant flow, even in the presence of varying system backpressures due to viscosity changes • High volumetric and overall operating efficiencies, resulting in reduced operational costs • Controllable output via variable capacities • Low internal velocities • Self-priming operation and good suction characteristics
Blackmer S Series triple screw pumps are made to handle clean lubricating fluids without solid content across a wide range of viscosities, temperatures and pressures. This method of operation delivers smooth, constant product flow with low noise and high levels of energy efficiency, which are critical concerns in oil and gas fluid-handling applications.
• High tolerance for entrained air and other gases – a prime consideration in oil production • Low mechanical vibration lengthens service life • Intrinsically smooth and quiet operation • Extremely low pulsation reduces stress and prolongs life of associated fluidtransfer components (piping, hoses, etc) Realizing the operational advantages that can be achieved when using screw pumps in oiland-gas fluid-transfer applications, Blackmer, Grand Rapids, MI, USA, a leading provider of pumps and compressors for industrial use, and a product brand of PSG, Oakbrook Terrace, IL, USA, a Dover company, has developed the S Series Screw Pump product line. Specifically, Blackmer recommends two of its S Series pump models –Twin Screw With Timing Gear (WTG) and Triple Screw – for oiland-gas fluid-transfer activities. The Twin Screw (WTG) pumps have been designed with external bearings and a timinggear transmission, which produces doublesuction, self-priming operation with no metalto-metal contact between the pump’s internal components. This design helps the Twin Screw (WTG) pump achieve the highest flow rates of any rotary PD pump, even at varying backpressures and viscosity levels. In fact,
the deliverable flow rate of a PD screw pump, unlike a centrifugal pump, actually increases as the fluid’s viscosity increases. These design characteristics also make screw pumps suitable for all types of transfer applications, including low- or high-viscosity, lubricating or non-lubricating, neutral or aggressive, and clean or contaminated fluids. The Triple Screw pumps are made to handle clean lubricating fluids without solid content across a wide range of viscosities, temperatures and pressures. They are designed with a male drive spindle, two female secondary spindles and a case that contains the screws, which allows the fluid to move smoothly and continuously in an axial direction from suction to discharge. This method of operation delivers smooth, constant product flow with low noise and high levels of energy efficiency.
But when we become entirely wedded to one way of doing things we become blind to alternatives that may be even more successful than the status quo. Such is the case with PD screw pumps and the role they could play in optimizing fluid transfer in oil-and-gas operations. While screw pumps may have a higher purchase cost than centrifugal pumps, it is best to remember this old bromide: “buying cheap just means you will have to buy it again.” And, anyway, the main operational advantages that screw pumps have – the ability to handle a wider window of fluid viscosities at higher rates and pressures, lower energy consumption and no BEP to be concerned about – leave them poised to become a more efficient, reliable and versatile alternative to centrifugal pumps in critical oiland-gas fluid-handling applications. ◘ For more information on Blackmer’s full line of pumps and compressors, visit website blackmer. com or call (616) 241-1611. ngineers often experience a variety of challenges during the heat exchanger and pressure vessel verification and design processes, including time constraints and inherent delays. With everincreasing safety requirements and need for improved efficiency, EPC companies across the globe are exploring new ways to guarantee safer and faster heat exchanger design and analysis. In addition, as the geographical diversity of greenfield projects increases, the ability to adhere to both international and regionspecific code rules is needed to ensure quick and efficient client delivery process. Many key companies in the industry are working with engineering solution providers such as Hexagon PPM to take advantage of the latest technologies to improve efficiency and gain competitive advantage. Erika Ahvenainen, Hexagon PPM, and Jana Miller, CADWorx & Analysis Solutions, outline how to improve heat exchanger and pressure vessel design and analysis.
Case Study 1: On Line Design & Engineering Ltd, England
The owner operator wanted to avoid replacing the nozzle as this could be a timeconsuming and potentially very costly due to the necessary system downtime. To avoid a plant outage, On Line Design & Engineering needed to implement a fitness for service solution that enabled the heat exchanger and piping to safely remain in operation. The Challenge CAESAR II pipe stress analysis software was used to create a model of the entire piping system, including a connection from a tower to the heat exchanger nozzle. The main objective was to avoid any costly shutdowns and to have a better understanding of the current state of the piping system. Initial modeling and analysis combined with a site inspection proved the whole system to be very sensitive to the stiffness values of nozzle connections and certain pipe supports. The challenge was to accurately calculate the stiffnesses of critical components at and close to the nozzle. This was of most significance in calculating accurate loads and stresses.
The Solution On Line Design & Engineering implemented CAESAR II for qualification of piping systems in accordance with appropriate design codes to ensure compliance with site and industry standards. Paulin Research Group NozzlePRO software supplemented the solution by carrying out local finite element analysis on pipe components, included on the pipe checks. Using CAESAR II and NozzlePRO, On Line Design & Engineering found that the piping system in question was safe since the loads produced on the equipment nozzle using the more refined and accurate model were lower than the owner operator originally believed. The analysis showed that the nozzle connection was still compliant with site and industry standards, enabling the owner operator to avoid an unnecessary nozzle exchange and an unproductive and lengthy shutdown of the system.
Background On Line Design & Engineering Ltd, established in 1982, provides engineering and management services nationwide in the United Kingdom in petrochemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and general engineering industries. The EPC was employed to search for possible solutions to maintain piping system operations within a major oil refinery after fitness for service measurements revealed potential problems. During an inspection phase, a nozzle connection to a critical item of equipment (shell and tube heat exchanger) was found to be corroded. The plant owners were concerned that the remaining thickness to safely retain the fluid during operation was non-compliant with the site schedules and safety standards.
Figure 1: A variety of stiffness values were calculated by On Line Design Engineering.

The Solution NEWES chose to use CAESAR II for all of the stress calculations in accordance with ASME, EN and RToD codes, whilst Visual Vessel Design software was used for the internal pressure calculations according to ASME and EN codes. First, the piping system stresses were checked with CAESAR II and the resulting nozzle loads for the boilers were checked according to the EN13445 with Visual Vessel Design.
Figure 2: An example of the three boiler connections that was included.
The Future Prior to using CAESAR II and NozzlePRO, On Line Design & Engineering outsourced such complex engineering projects to other thirdparty organizations because these tasks require a high degree of accuracy and speed of analysis. Outsourcing was not only more expensive, but it also meant that control over project timescales and completion was more difficult. Plus, it prevented the development of engineering expertise, a vital component in selling its services.
was contracted to perform pipe design for a new power plant that would be generating process steam for a chemical plant.
The successful implementation of CAESAR II and NozzlePRO on this project provided On Line Design & Engineering with expertise to expand its solution offerings to similar indepth projects in the future. The company is planning to further train its employees in Hexagon PPM solutions and has already invested in Paulin Research Group FEATools finite element analysis software to further facilitate more accurate analysis. The aim is to prevent unnecessary piping system modifications while ensuring compliance with site and national standards.
All of the systems were to be designed within the PED (European Pressure Equipment Directive) according to the Dutch laws for pressure vessels (RToD). This way, the goal of the project was to design and install a functional power plant in accordance with the European legislation, ensuring customer satisfaction.
Case Study 2: NEWES, The Netherlands Background NEWES is the largest maintenance and service company for the steam boiler industry in The Netherlands. The company
The scope included creating a DN500 steam line from the three boilers to the pressure reducing stations that have connections with the existing steam piping systems. This also comprised safety lines to safety valves with blow out lines. In addition, NEWES was asked to create a DN350 feed waterline from the boiler feed water tank to the boiler feed water pumps.
The Challenge The three cylindrical boiler connections with low allowable forces and moments made the steam line design especially challenging. The distance between the three boilers was only seven meters and one or two of the boilers could be out of service at times. In addition, the main obstacle for successful design and implementation of
The key benefits NEWES realized by using the software included: •
True international code flexibility thanks to the ability to perform stress calculations in accordance with all international design codes.
•
Shortened project time due to efficient and accurate pipe stress and pressure vessel analysis.
•
Accurate and correct stress and pressure vessel analysis.
The Future NEWES will continue to use CAESAR II and Visual Vessel Design on its upcoming projects for ensuring design safety. Stefan Wesseling, service specialist at NEWES, commented, “One of the key benefits of using such software is the ability to use the created 3D model also for CAD engineering. This model gives the user a global overview of designs and calculations, helping to prevent mistakes.” Case Study 3: Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering Background L&T was assigned the design and manufacture of five large diameters,

feed water lines were the allowable forces and moments on the feed water pumps. To overcome these challenges, NEWES chose to design an expansion loop between each boiler connection and the main steam line. The system would be checked according to various design cases, ensuring compliance with the specified loads and accuracy of the design.

The Solution L&T designed complete equipment with all related design conditions and represented supporting calculations for review by the client and any third-party inspectors assigned to that task. L&T was able to deliver client requirements within the planned timeline and receive the milestone payments from the client as scheduled. PV Elite provided fast and convenient calculations and control of the various revisions required by the client, saving time and expense. The company was able to reduce design time with the user-friendly interface and accurate output. “The software’s 3D PDF feature impressed the client. This enabled our client to feel and understand the complete design package,” Patel said. Conclusion As the experiences of On Line Design Engineering, Newes and Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering show, smarter software solutions can significantly improve the quality of the overall analysis of heat exchangers, pressure columns, and pressure vessels whilst contributing to an overall improvement of design efficiency. ◘
Figure 3: Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering designed and manufactured several pieces of critical process equipment at the heart of the entire refinery. Five large diameter heavy pressure columns measured 4.5 m in diameter and 30 m in length.
high pressure columns for a refinery facility in Liwa, Oman. The project required complete mechanical design and fabrication per ASME Sec VIII Division 1 and 2 codes and included the nozzles, platforms, internal components, pipe loading, and other elements. The columns had diameters ranging from 2.9 m to 4.5 m and lengths of 26 m and 30 m. The Challenge Designing such large-sized columns – the heart of the entire refinery – while addressing the many design conditions of the client and following the international code requirements to ensure safe operation can be very challenging. In addition, the contract delivery date was very stringent. “With a project of such large size and complexity in design, PV Elite helped us to efficiently resolve various calculations
and double-check possible conditions for our client,” said Apurva Patel, Assistant Manager of Engineering at L&T. Meeting deadlines is very important for manufacturers if they are to satisfy the client’s requirements and build trust for future business opportunities. With the use of modern engineering software, L&T was able to avoid experiencing delays at the start of the project that would have impacted the whole subsequent manufacturing cycle time due. This would cause a loss of money and lower the level of trust of the client in the firm’s capabilities. The large complex design benefited from the PV Elite 3D model, which allowed for checking for clashes and other issues before preparing the drawings. L&T could then finalize the locations of nozzles to accommodate piping requirements.

Reverse osmosis membranes are now commonly used for water purification. This article looks at how operators should deal with operational challenges such as falling rejection and a reduction in performance.
R
everse osmosis is a standard water treatment technology that has steadily gained increasing acceptance over the years. Handy design programs, helpful literature and improved knowledge have led to this technology becoming much more commonplace. For example, reverse osmosis is no longer limited to use in industrial water treatment facilities, but also now has a domestic application such as for treating mains water. Whatever the application, however, the fundamental problems that can be observed in membrane processes have not changed, namely: • Falling rejection • Reduction in performance (reduced flow or higher pressure) When such problems occur, the first question to be clarified is whether there have been any changes in water quality or temperature. To make it easier to localize problems, it is important to document basic parameters such as temperature, flow, pressure, yield and conductivity. In addition, it is also helpful to measure the pressure loss, preferably between the concentrate levels. Reverse osmosis membranes are not only common in industrial scale plants but also at a smaller scale in homes These data should be normalized, ie, expressed in relation to a standard situation so that it is possible to assess whether the change in performance is due to the system or changed inflow parameters. Calculation tables for this purpose are provided by the membrane manufacturers free of charge. Aside

from this, it is vital to check that other facility components such as measuring equipment, anti-scalant dispensing units and ion exchange systems are running smoothly. If after normalization the data deviates as follows: • 20 per cent higher salt passage (definition: salt passage = 100 per cent rejection [%]) • 10 per cent reduction in flow • 20+ per cent of pressure loss along a pressure pipe The reason for this deviation should be investigated more closely. Frequently, small facilities only record a few measurement values and these are generally not normalized. Where this is the case, the influence of temperature and variations in the salt load in the water should be taken into account. The rule of thumb here is that for each degree
Celsius the temperature drops, flow is reduced by approx. 3 per cent. Investigating the Problem It goes without saying that the investigation process depends on the problem observed. If the salt passage has increased, ie, the rejection has worsened, this can indicate chemical or mechanical damage to the membrane or element. Reduced flow, on the other hand, is generally due to organic, biological or inorganic fouling. The following table provides an overview of the tendencies and potential reasons for a drop in performance. It is difficult, however, to localize and then deal with the problematic point in the system. Increased Flow and Deterioration of the Salt Rejection When there is increased flow and a deterioration of the salt rejection,

the conductivity of the permeate in all pressure pipes is checked in case any of the values are significantly elevated. If any single pipe is conspicuous, the element can be identified using the “central pipe testing method. This involves passing a flexible hose into the central pipe of the coiling element to the end of the pressure pipe and then slowly pulling it back out, catching some of the permeate in the hose. This sample can then be tested for conductivity. Should this suddenly rise at any point, the location of the leak can be identified based on the length of hose that has been pulled out. Testing times: The central pipe testing method involves passing a flexible hose into the central pipe of the coiling element to the end of the pressure pipe, to catch some of the permeate and then testing for conductivity.
The leak might either be due to damage to the element itself or to the interconnector between the elements. If all the elements demonstrate significantly increased conductivity with higher flow, this could indicate permanent damage. This can be a result of oxidation agents such as chlorine, solvents that have dissolved some of the polymer membrane, or can be caused by over-pressure in the permeate, which causes delamination of the membrane. The upstream elements are more likely to be affected by oxidation than the downstream ones. Delamination, on the other hand, is more likely to affect the downstream elements; since this is where permeate over-pressure is likely to be highest. Final clarification in this case can only come through an element

autopsy, as this kind of damage cannot be assessed from the outside. Increased flow and reduced rejection are clear indicators of a leak in the system that has to be remedied. This can frequently only be achieved by replacing the elements or small parts (eg, O-rings, interconnectors). Reduced Flow If there is reduced flow or if greater pressure is required, there is soiling (fouling). Depending on how pronounced it is, this can also lead to a reduction in salt rejection. Fouling is often associated with increased pressure loss along the entire pressure pipe, as the flow channels become blocked. While organic fouling primarily leads to blockages on the upstream side, the higher salt load on the downstream side is more likely to cause salt-precipitation, ie, inorganic fouling or scaling. Biological

Figure 1: Central pipe testing method with an example of increasing conductivity fouling can spread throughout the entire system and can therefore be found at various points. It is generally possible to determine the nature of the fouling by opening the pressure pipe. A quick inspection is usually enough to find an organic blockage, white salt crystals or biomass. Uninstalling and weighing the element will determine the degree of fouling. It must be drained for approx 15 minutes before determining the weight. If, for example, an 8-inch element that normally weighs approx 16-kg suddenly weighs more than 17-kg, this could be due to heavy fouling. In most cases, cleaning the element in good time can restore performance. Alkaline cleaning should be used to clear organic or biological fouling, while complexing agents are used for inorganic fouling in acidic ranges.
Summary A significant increase in flow combined with a simultaneous reduction in rejection must always be assessed as critical, as it can be attributable to damaged elements or seals. It is generally necessary to replace the damaged parts.
test of the element and a surface analysis. Ultimately, however, it is important to test whether the cause of the drop in performance can be eliminated so as to ensure a stable process. ◘
Decreased flow is usually caused by fouling. In this case, it is essential to determine the degree and nature of the fouling so as to select the appropriate cleaning strategy. If initial examination does not provide clear enough results, an element autopsy can be useful. This can be conducted at appropriate institutions such as the IWW Water Centre (Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wasserforschung gemeinnützige GmbH) in Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, and involves both a

The extruder spheroniser is a selfcontained compact system for the special purpose of making pellets with GMP compliance. System is specially used for making dense pallets for controlled release solid dosage of oral form with minimum expicients. Extruder is the necessary first step for spheronisation. Extruder is often used to eliminate dust in formulation even when spheronization is not the final objective. The raw material to be extruded is introduced axially from the feed hopper into screw housing where it is exposed to rotating screw which conveys the material towards rotor. Rotor forces the material to pass through the mesh with the effect of scraping impact resulting in formation of cylindrical extrudes. The size of the extruder screen operature will dictate the size of the spheroids. The extrudes are dropped axially from the feed hopper into the spheroniser on the rotating checker plate to get sized; further exposure to the checker plate results in conversion of the extrudes into the shape of spheres, ie, pellets. The groove pattern used for the checkered plate is crosshatched square pattern, which forms a grid of truncated pyramids on the processing surface.

Typically the raw water pretreatment units include media filtration, softening and ultrafiltration unit as standard feature. Media filtration is an important first step to achieve clean water to feed to RO. The sand media is carefully selected and graded to ensure highest results. All pre-engineered standard package plants have FRP vessels as per ASME Sec X with manual multiport valve or frontal valves and piping assembly. The filters can be supplied in fully automatic mode of operation on request. Typically the pre-treatment also include a softener for removing monovalent cations causing hardness to ensure scale free plant operation. We use uniform particle size resin which gives highest regeneration efficiency and lowest hardness in outlet water quality. As a standard feature all softening plants are supplied with manual mode of operation, however, on request we can supply softening plants with automatic mode of operation also. Ultrafiltration in the pre-treatment ensures a consistent RO feed water quality of SDI less than 3.0. This minimises the fouling of RO by particulates and other suspended impurities. The UF used is hollow fine fibre constructed of either PVDF or modified PES to achieve a high quality of the filtrate. Typically we adopt a conservative approach in UF design to ensure a long troublefree operation. An important feature of our UF is provision of online UF membrane integrity test facility which warns of UF fibre breakage if any. All UF plants are fully automatic.

DOSING TANK STATION
Ashland offers its comprehensive solutions for waterborne industrial and architectural coatings. Aquaflow non-ionic synthetic associative thickeners (NSATs), for high-performance waterborne paints and coatings, build rheology through self-association and interaction with other ingredients. Easy-to-handle Aquaflow liquid rheology modifiers are based on hydrophobically-modified polyacetal-polyether (HMPAPE) chemistry and are often drop-in replacements for urethanetype (HEUR) thickeners. In waterborne latex paints, Aquaflow XLS NSAT grades improve the usability and efficacy of paints and coatings. They deliver virtually drip-free application, better viscosity retention after tinting, and provide outstanding flow and leveling to paints and coatings. This helps eliminate brush marks and enhances applied hiding, enabling fewer coats while achieving beautiful, lasting finishes. Natrosol and Natrosol Plus represent the most widely specified thickener brand for waterborne coatings. They are non-ionic, free-flowing powders that are based on hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC). Natrosol offers pseudoplastic or shear-thinning characteristics, biostability and best-in-class colour compatibility for waterborne paint applications. Drewplus foam control agents are non-ionic blends of hydrophobic silica, silicones and paraffinic oil, and are formulated for use in water-based coatings. These highly efficient foam control agents offer easy incorporation and quick bubble break performance, with excellent persistence and compatibility. Because Drewplus functions as an air release agent, it is particularly effective on microfoam in spray-applied industrial coatings.

POWDER TRANSFER SYSTEM
SS STORAGE VESSELS
Toshniwal has expertise in manufacturing vacuum pump for more than three decades for varied application. The vacuum conveying technology is a proven method of moving dry bulk solids and powders in a range of applications. It is widely used in food, pharma, chemical and industrial environments. Frequently noted benefits of vacuum conveying systems include cleanliness due to the closed conveying lines, reliability, low noise, simple operation, gentle material transfer with dilute to dense phase conveying, easylow cost maintenance, lower operating cost and safety. The most common vacuum conveying systems use a batch process. The transfer line is sealed, a vacuum pump is activated and the process material (powder or granules) is conveyed to a receiving vessel. When the batch is complete, vacuum is released, and the material is dropped or transferred from the receiving vessel to the desired destination. The system is again sealed and vacuum is reintroduced to get the product flowing again. The selection of the vacuum pump is one of the most important elements of the system design. The vacuum pump needs to be able to quickly evacuate air from the line, pull and maintain enough vacuum to induce product movement, and provide a volume of air that is sufficient to transfer all the material needed in a given time. The plate heat exchanger consists of a plate stack composed of advantageously circular grooved plates, welded together. The clearances between the plates form flow ducts for flows of a heat supplying medium and a heat receiving medium. The plates are provided with holes which form inlet and outlet channels for the flows of the heat transfer media. Atleast one of the holes on the plates is located substantially in the center of the plate. The plate heat exchanger operates on the cross-flow principle. When the plate heat exchanger is provided with a partly opened mantle which connects the end plates together and the central channel is provided with a partly opened pipe to control the flows, the plate heat exchanger is made to function both on the counter flow principle and the forward flow principle. The outside air and the inside air are completely separate from each other. It finds application in ventilation systems, industrial ventilation systems and adiabatic cooling.

ROTARY VACUUM PADDLE DRYERS
BATCH MIXER
Chemiplants rotary vacuum paddle dryers are used to attain dry powders from wet cake or solutions. Mostly these dryers are operated under vacuum and are a batch operation. It consists of a fixed cylindrical shell with a central rotating agitator. The rotating shaft is hollow and heated with hot water/steam circulation through the same. Both the utility side and the vacuum side are provided with mechanical seals. A large heat transfer area is achieved due to the heated shaft and the heated paddles giving a max heat transfer co-efficient. The drive mechanism consists of a reduction gearbox with a chain sprocket system coupled to the drive motor. The entire assembly along with the dryer chamber is mounted on a skid which avoids foundation cost and reduces the maintenance cost. Materials of construction are usually SS AISI 316 and other special alloys namely C22, C276, etc, can be supplied on request.
The batch mixer operates on the hurling and whirling principle introduced by Lodige to the mixing technology and technical literature. The mixing elements ensure constant and total involvement of all product particles preventing the formation of dead or low movement zones. In that way components of extremely different bulk density and structure can be mixed; even mixing in of aerosils for example is achieved homogenously and without demixing. The resultant individualisation of the particles in the mix (fluid bed) allows the addition of liquids and coating of the particles with ease. If necessary, high-speed choppers provide additional support of the mixing process. Ploughshare Shovels can be modified for intensive and gentle mixing of fragile components even at low speeds. Reducing the peripheral speed to <1 m/sec is possible, depending on the product properties. Pastes and pumpable mixture can be processed with suitably adjusted mixing elements.

AGITATED NUTSCHE FILTER DRYERS The S2 ANFDs are innovatively designed and engineered to help improve plant operational process efficiency. S2 Engg’s ANFDs feature a differential mixing agitator that moves vertically for thorough mixing. It has a series of sharp curved blades that achieve mixing penetration in difficult cakes without causing undue product stress. While moving and lifting the cake media around the vessel, agitation mixing efficiency is achieved through differential velocities. A key benefit of the S2 design is that the dried/semi-dried cake can be washed after filtration by reslurrying the cake within an automated operational cycle for as many times as required. The cake is then discharged by lowering the agitator and rotating it in such a manner that it brings all the cake towards the discharge port. S2 Engg provides integral barrier isolator (glove box) technology for contained discharge and charging operations of hazardous potent and toxic products. The S2 solution minimises any waste cake through innovative equipment design. Chromate is useful in many industries – in the production of pigments and dyes for textiles, paints and colored glass, anodized or plated on to metals for surface finishing applications, as an oxidizing agent to tan and process leather, and as a corrosion inhibitor in industrial cooling towers. Chromate easily leaches from soil to ground and surface waters and can enter the air through evaporation and combustion processes. Monitoring waste streams containing chromate is extremely important because chromate is highly toxic even in minute concentrations; a property which is enhanced by the high solubility of chromate and its affinity for leaching. In the method concerned, the target analyte is mixed with reagents in a fully automated procedure, resulting in a soluble product which can be measured photometrically at a wavelength of 560 nm.

This can be experienced on the shop floor when colorist matches colour in a fluorescent light, which appears to be total mismatch to the colorist when viewed in daylight and vice-versa. Scan-O-Lite is compact colour matching booth, which is equipped with standard light sources. Most important benefit of evaluating colours with Scan-O Lite is the consistency of illumination, whether it is day or night or whether you are examining the colour in your factory, office or at customer end, you are assured of the same uniform and standard illumination. Scan-O-Lite will be very important for your modern laboratory on your shop floor.

Industry News The Year 2017 for Vedanta Cairn Oil and Gas
New Delhi, India: Oil and gas industry has seen steady year on year growth every year in last one decade. The year gone by is not an exception as well. As the growing demand suggests that India’s oil demand is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6 per cent to 458 Million Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (MTOE) by 2040, while demand for energy will more than double by 2040 as economy will grow to more than five times its current size. According to Boston Consulting Group report Indian Government take from domestic oil production is the highest in the world, despite India being an oil-importing country. Gas production will likely touch 90 Billion Cubic Metres (BCM) by 2040, subject to adjustment to the current formula that determines the price paid to domestic producers, while demand for natural gas will grow at a CAGR of 4.6 per cent to touch 149 MTOE.
Mumbai, India: Vedanta delivered a strong set of results this year and took important steps towards achieving strategic objectives. Record production levels across several of businesses were met this year along with the confidence of continued successful ramp-ups across the world-class assets. Also, the company moved toward streamlining its strategic approach to deliver better results in 2018
India’s domestic oil and gas production touched a five year low in 2016-2017 dropping more than 20 per cent to 68 million tonne. The country’s import dependence for crude shot up to a five year-high of 83.4 per cent, data from the oil ministry’s arm Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed. Total domestic oil and gas production in 2016-2017 stood at 67.9 million Tonne of Oil Equivalent (MTOE) as compared to 85.7 MMTOE in 2011-2012. However, during the same five year period, the country’s oil and gas production from international assets grew more than 84 percent to 16.2 MTOE in 2016-2017. Looking at this trend, the year gone by does not seem to be a boost to India’s planning towards the vision of energy security. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) announced its plans to invest USD 11 billion in exploration and development of blocks in the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin, which is expected to increase gas production by around 30 per cent over the next three-four years. Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have signed an agreement to build an integrated refinery-cum-petrochemicals complexes, which would have a capacity of 60 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and cost approximately US$ 40 billion. The refinery is expected to commence operations by 2022. BPCL plans to invest Rs 1.08 trillion (USD 16.88 billion) over the coming five years for expansion of operations across business segments, of which the company plans to invest Rs 45,000 crore (USD 7.03 billion) in the petrochemicals segment. The total investment by oil marketing companies (OMCs) on fuel upgradation programme will reach Rs 90,000 crore (USD 13.95 billion) by 2020, according to Mr. K D Tripathi, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. World’s largest oil exporter Saudi Aramco is planning to invest in refineries and petrochemicals in India as it looks to enter into a strategic partnership with the country. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had set the target to bring down India’s import dependence on oil and gas by at least 10 per cent by 2022. If this goal has to be achieved, the government needs to take proactive steps in boosting domestic production and cutting reliance on imports. While the government is committed, the Industry looks forward to some bold steps in 2018. The cess of 20% of per barrel cost as per current policy is a highly nonconducive operating environment for the producers. The government must look at addressing the issue in the upcoming budget.
An important milestone for Vedanta this year was the completion of the merger of Vedanta Limited and Cairn India, and this simplified the group structure. This strategic restructuring is expected to support strong shareholder returns There has been successful ramp up from Mangala EOR with production level of 56,000 boepd in Q4 at Vedanta Cairn Oil and Gas Vedanta Cairn emerged as one of the biggest bidders for oil and gas blocks of future in 2017. This approach clearly emphasizes the company’s vision to gradually increase its contribution to India’s energy security Vedanta Cairn also plans to invest $1 billion in five projects that the company plans to develop in near future. Vedanta Cairn is also looking at investing further in its Barmer fields and is also considering a technology partnership Vedanta Cairn Oil & Gas strengthened its leadership team to drive its growth plan, excellence and innovation. The role of the following four seasoned leaders have been enhanced as they are entrusted with new targets and opportunities to drive Cairn to the next phase of growth and enable the company’s vision to contribute 50% of India’s crude oil & gas production. Mr. Sudhir Mathur, Mr. Suniti Bhat, Mr. Pankaj Kalra and Mr. Sharad R. Goenka take up the responsibility of CEO, COO, CFO and Chief Strategy & Policy Officer respectively.

Overall Development in the Oil & Gas Sector 2017
Project Update
New Contracts/Expansions/Revamps The following list is a brief insight into the latest new projects by various companies in India. CHEMICALS Coal India is planning a `10,000-crore joint venture along with GAIL India, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF) and The Fertilizer Corporation of India (FCIL) to set up a urea and ammonium nitrate chemicals complex that will run on gasified coal. Coal India has appointed Projects and Development India (PDIL) to conduct a feasibility study on the project. The plan is to use around 6 million tonnes of coal from coalfields at Talcher in Odisha and manufacture about 3 lakh tonnes of urea annually and around 300-400 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per day. Ammonium nitrate is the principal ingredient for making explosives used as blasting material at coal mines. The country is facing a crunch in the supply of ammonium nitrate and explosive suppliers often jack up prices, resulting in higher input costs for the company. Songwon Industrial Co Ltd of South Korea has launched its new pilot plant in Panoli, Gujarat, thereby strengthening the organisation’s overall specialty chemicals development capability. Built on Songwon’s Indian site with all the necessary main unit operations, the new plant is equipped with the most up-to-date technologies and materials for producing a wide range of chemicals for a broad spectrum of applications - from one kilo up to several hundred kilo samples. Pentaerythritol, a white crystalline polyhydric alcohol containing four primary hydroxyl groups, is used as building blocks in alkyd resins for coatings, radiation curing monomers, polyurethanes, rosin esters, synthetic lubricants and explosives. Perstorp currently manufactures producing penta in three different production plants in Germany, the US and Sweden. The related market for coatings in India is growing fast in the country.
IOL Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd (IOLCP), a producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), has increased the production capacity of ibuprofen to 6,200 tonnes per annum (TPA) at Barnala plant in Punjab. Expansion follows a de-bottlenecking project undertaken by the company at an estimated cost of `24 crores. IOL Chemicals already exports ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used as painkiller, to regulated and emerging markets, ie, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, etc. With the recent approval from US FDA, the company is expanding its ibuprofen business in the US as well. Being the only integrated ibuprofen player globally, IOL Chemicals aims to build and sustain the growth of its APIs business in coming years by exploring the higher value regulated markets. MINING NTPC Ltd the state-owned power generator hopes its captive coal production will reach 100 million tonne (MT) as soon as its five coal blocks commence operations, aided by faster regulatory clearances and the part-privatization model of Mine Development and Operator (MDO). The success of the plan would determine fuel security of the operations of India’s largest power producer. KIOCL will revive iron ore mining after a decade in Karnataka, after the State granted the company a lease of over 474 hectares at Devadaru hills in Ballari. KIOCL had suspended mining in the eco-sensitive Western Ghats following a Supreme Court directive in 2006. The company has already prepared an action plan and initiated the process for obtaining the necessary statutory clearances. Once approvals are given, it would invest `1,500 crore in a pellet plant and also a unit to enrich iron ore from the mines. After suspension of mining, KIOCL had shifted to operating 3.5 million tonne per annum pellet plant in Mangaluru. Last year, it produced 1.46 million tonnes, utilising half its capacity, as against almost nil production in the previous year. Under the Make-In-India programme, International agencies have already implemented pilot projects by bringing high grade iron ore from South America, Iran and other parts of the world and utilising KIOCL’s facility, have taken away pellets facilitating better utilisation of its plant capacity and profitability utilising its manpower. The company’s blast furnace Unit having a capacity of 216,000 tonnes of pig iron which was put under suspension since 2009 has been taken for repair and the Unit is ready for operation for producing foundry grade pig iron adding towards its profitability in the coming financial year. The firm earned a profit of`47.93 crore in FY17 as against a loss of ` 80.15 crore the previous year. Revenues grew 353 per cent to ` 929.36 crore from `205.57 crore in the previous fiscal. JSW Energy, part of the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, is believed to be in the race for buying out the thermal power assets of Monnet Power and Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (JITPL) in Odisha. Monnet Power’s 1,050-MW coal-based power plant near Angul was in advanced stage of commissioning. Monnet Power’s parent company, Monnet Ispat & Energy had won the Mandakini coal block in Odisha in competitive bidding, it surrendered the block later on grounds of economic unviability.
Monnet Power had accumulated debt in excess of `5,000 crore. Though lenders had earlier denied a haircut in JSW Energy’s prospective deal to acquire majority equity in Monnet Power, the Sajjan Jindal-owned firm is still believed to be in the hunt for the asset. Besides Monnet Power, JSW Energy is also eyeing takeover of BC Jindal controlled JITPL’s 1,200-MW coal-based plant at Derang near Angul. The first unit (600-MW) of the 1,200-MW plant had begun commercial operations and started power supplies to the Odisha grid. But, coal paucity and absence of firm linkages had caused disruptions in the operations of the power plant. This project has been completed at a cost of `7,537 crore which includes a debt component of `5,900 crore. JITPL has power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Odisha’s Gridco Ltd, Kerala State Electricity Board and Tata Power Trading Corporation. Apart from JSW Energy, JITPL also had competing offers from Adani Power and Singapore’s SembCorp.. NLC India (formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation) which is in the hunt for buying out power assets is understood to have shown interest in the 700-MW Odisha plant of Hyderabad-based Ind-Barath Power Infra Ltd (IBPIL). The power plant located at Sahajbahal, near Jharsuguda, has commenced commercial operations. Though the exact size of the potential deal is not known, the valuation could be anywhere in the range of ` 5,000-5,500 crore. In August last year, NLC India had floated an Expression of Interest (EoI) from companies owning coal and lignitebased power projects, for a possible acquisition. NLC India’s installed thermal power capacity is 3, 240-MW. It runs a 10-MW solar power unit and wind power assets with a capacity totalling 37.5-MW. Western Coalfields, state-run Coal India arm, has received the environment clearance for its `263 crore expansion project in Nagpur district, Maharashtra. The proposal is to enhance the production capacity of the Gokul open cast mine to 1.875-million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from the existing 1-MTPA. The mine, located in 767.17-hectare, has a mineable reserve of 14.50-million tonnes. Among the conditions specified, the company has been asked to get ‘Consent to Operate’ Certificate from the State Pollution Control Board for the existing production capacity of 1-MTPA and also the ‘Consent to Establish’ for the proposed capacity of 1.875-MTPA prior to enhancing the production capacity. With regard to transportation of coal, the company has been asked to carry out by covered trucks and take mitigative measures to control dust and other fugitive emissions all along the roads by providing sufficient number of water sprinklers. The company has been informed to adopt controlled blasting techniques to control ground vibration and flying rocks. It has also been told to implement a progressive afforestation plan covering an area of 376.04-hectare at the end of mining. Of the total quarry area of 231.73-hectare (on floor) and 291.21-hectare (on surface), the backfilled quarry area of 115.39-hectare should be reclaimed with plantation and there will be no void left at the end of the mining operations. The land after mining should be restored for agriculture purpose. OIL & GAS Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), India’s second biggest state-run refiner, plans to spend about `13,000 crore on expanding its Numaligarh refinery in Assam by 2017-18.The company plans to expand the Numaligarh refinery to 9 million tonnes from the current 3 million tonnes.
