Interview
Garlock Building Safety and Reliability into your Plants and Processes Garlock, an EnPro Industries family of companies, is acknowledged as the global leader in high-performance fluid sealing and pipeline protection products for industry and infrastructure. Garlock products are at work in many specialty industries, including chemical and petrochemical, refining, pulp and paper, water and wastewater treatment and drainage, power generation, primary metals, food and pharma, infrastructure, mining and others. The company serve as an OEM provider and as a supplier to engineering and construction contractors. The Garlock family of companies continues to develop next-generation technologies that are changing the way industrial and infrastructure users meet their sealing requirements. By combining the most innovative products with unparalleled service and a strong environmental commitment, Mr Rajesh Baviskar Country Sales Manager - India, Sri Lanka Garlock India Pvt Ltd (An EnPro Industries Co) Pune, Maharashtra 411 026 E-mail: rajesh.baviskar@garlock.com Website: www.garlock.com
Garlock deliver solutions that improve plant productivity, reduce costs and comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Continued investment in research and development, new product innovations, production facilities, customer support and environmental initiatives are assurances that Garlock will retain their global leadership in sealing technologies. Mr Rajesh Baviskar, Country Sales Manager - India, Sri Lanka, Garlock India Pvt Ltd shares insights about the company in an exclusive interview with Bernard Rapose. Please share some insight into the journey till now since its inception? What has your company always been striving for? Garlock started its formal operations in the year 2007. Earlier Garlock being an export company doing its business from USA, Germany and France locations into Indian market, it was entirely different experience when Garlock local team started interacting with Indian customers. Indian process industry was less aware about Garlock and its product, service offerings. On the other side, Garlock globally had limited knowledge on what Indian industry is and what value addition it was looking for? This made two way educating and learning process for Garlock team and management. Garlock worldwide has been doing work of educating industry about the importance of right fluid sealing for their applications. In India we followed the same initiative. We have been educating industry irrespective of whether they use Garlock products or not. This initiative has built up a strong bond between Garlock and customers.

Tell us about some of the key measures that Garlock is taking towards improving overall efficiency? How does Garlock monitor its progress towards perfection? Garlock always worked on how the wastage can be reduced and how things can be used to its fullest capability to achieve the output with high efficiency. Garlock is not a mass product production company. Apart from standard catalogue parts, Garlock makes many custom parts and at low quantity on daily basis. This requires highly flexible design and manufacturing process. To achieve this Garlock always used modern technology and equipment with lean manufacturing methods which eliminate unnecessary work stations and check points ensuring high output. We believe that the person who works on the particular activity is the most capable person to do the things in more efficient way and hence that person is given authority to make his or her decisions related to the activities he or she is responsible for. We always try to achieve “First Time Right methodology towards achieving perfection.
Interview
Does Garlock deliver solutions that improve plant productivity, reduce cost and comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations? What type of assurance Garlock gives to regain their global leadership in sealing technologies? Garlock always work on improving equipment and plant productivity, reducing maintenance cost by supplying most suitable sealing product. To achieve this, we study customer applications very carefully and then recommend most suitable product to suit that application. Sometimes customer has concern about the price point as compared to the existing product they use, but when they understand how actually they are saving cost than the existing cheap product by reducing waste and improving efficiency prefer to use Garlock products Many times customers
do not think about the environment they are polluting or damaging by using cheap quality product, but when they realise it, they definitely show interest in using high quality products to save environment. Garlock global team members are on various industrial forums, committees who continuously work on concerns over environmental issues. Garlock also have internal teams which work with our R&D to design and develop products those help meet environmental regulations. Garlock product credentials and our warrantee of serving the applications lead Garlock to have its leadership in fluid sealing industry. I feel very proud when our customers refer others to use Garlock products in the applications where customers have troubles achieving results.
What stringent quality test does your company follow? Do you have a separate team to ensure that all raw materials and components are tested as per the quality plan? Garlock is very particular about quality, be it raw material quality or final product quality or even individual employees work quality. Garlock being global company, we follow all international standards and work processes. Our supply chain and quality teams work together to ensure that every direct and indirect raw material or services are up to Garlock standard. Various internal tests as well as tests done at outside laboratory ensure that no compromise is being made so that final product delivered to our customers exceeds their expectations. Stringent documentation provides the full traceability of our products which is very important in sealing components. Your company acquired RubberFab Gasket & Molding Inc. How does this add to the image and value of Garlock? Are there more such plans to acquire companies or go in for JVs with Indian or foreign companies in the near future? RubberFab is a strategic addition to Garlock portfolio. RubberFab has very innovative and high quality products. RubberFab has extensive experience in food and pharmaceutical segment. This was perfect match with Garlock vision. Garlock is very active in finding strategic partners by mergers and acquisitions in the global market place. Garlock is surely looking into a perfect suite in Asia and India to grow its market share into this region. Your company has extensive experience of executing international projects. In your view, what are the gaps that the Indian companies need to address to be successful in other geographies? For any company to be successful outside its home country, I think it is very important to have right local people to give information on ground realities of those markets. Local laws, regulations and voice of customer need to be captured carefully.

position themselves with the entry strategy to differentiate with the competitors. It is needless to say that product offering and service quality plays very important role in achieving the success! What are the various certifications acquired and what has been the key achievement of your company over the years? What is the growth rate you are aiming at during the current fiscal and how is it poised to grow in the next 5 years? Garlock complies with the regulations of all those industries where we do businesses. For example in oil and gas, we comply to fugitive emission norms, fire safe norms and necessary tests and certifications are obtained. For Food & Pharma industry we obtained FDA, KTW, Phthalate free, etc. Our manufacturing sites are ISO 9000 as well as 14000 certified. India market is slightly volatile based on global clues. But process industry never stops and hence focusing on right market gives us the growth in this volatile situation. India being one of the emerging markets, we are expecting to grow double digits in next 3 to 5 years. How do you ensure SHE (safety, health and environment) is implemented? What sort of training do you impart on your work force? Garlock is always concerned about safety at work place. Not only at Garlock locations but also at our customer locations. We make our customer work places safer by supplying them superior sealing solutions for their critical applications. We are proud to be named as Americas Safest Company in 2006, 2011 as well as in 2016. Our dedicated EHS committee continuously works with global locations to ensure all norms are followed and implemented. What steps has your company taken to bring science and innovation together to maintain the growth momentum in the current scenario? What strategy do you adopt to keep up with the changing demand trend? Our customers are our motivation to work on their challenging applications. As industry
is looking to achieve more efficiency with reduced resources, processes are becoming critical for sealing product suppliers. We value voice of our customers and take that forward up to our innovation team to come out with suitable solutions. This is why Garlock is able to lead in innovating products which cater to those demanding and challenging applications. How has the market evolved for Garlock products and what has been your strategy towards acquiring greater share in the market? What are the shortand long-term plans of the company? In my observation, over last 15 years Indian market and customers are now more concerned about good quality sealing products. Price factor is still important in India, but it is no more the only consideration. No one wants to use low quality products for cheap prices and keep worrying about high servicing and maintenance costs. I have seen customers are now knowledgeable on sealing products. Garlock does many training programs to spread knowledge to our customers and we involve customers in the process of designing and selecting sealing products for their applications. This makes our customers comfortable working with us and using our products. What is the market sentiment across the industry now? In your opinion, what key growth drivers will fuel this demand? With change in global political situation, India still has advantage of exporting technology products and services. In my view, our local consumption is the key to growth. Many initiatives taken by Indian Government will help industry grow. Growth in infrastructure, power and defence segment has lot of opportunities and potential to grow. Now that GST bill has been cleared, how do you see the impact on your company? What kind of opportunities do you see for Garlock in India? In my view, until GST is implemented it is not a reality! Impact of GST should be positive
12 | December 2016-January 2017 | Chemical Products Finder
for businesses. Reduced paper work, reduced ease of filing is also an advantage. People will focus more on the business than worrying about complicated compliances. I do not think there are sufficient initiatives taken by Government to educate industry about GST. What is the roadmap, how it will be implemented, what readiness company has to have, etc. Large corporations are getting ready themselves by appointing consultants, but not everyone (especially small and medium sized companies) can afford to have consultant to educate them on GST. I feel there will be chaos for some time when GST gets implemented and most importantly people are not aware where to go for help they need! How does ‘Make in India’ help Garlock and other private players of the country to take advantage of this situation? What will be the message to the industry? Under “Make in India” if large industrial multinationals come to India with their manufacturing sites, this will help Indian industry to grow their businesses, also job creation can improve. India is an emerging market, all global companies wants to do business in India and most of them want to do trading business in India. When it comes to having manufacturing site in India, these global companies still hesitate. When people talk about India globally, I still see their concerns over India position on ease of doing business, corruption index charts and complicated laws. In my view, not only Government but also we as a people of India should work towards changing our image globally so that we come real part of global economy. ◘

Revolutionary Vacuum Drying Concept Planex® System: multi-patented m o v e m e n t e c c e n t r i c a g i t a t o r.
I
talvacuum, one of the most known manufacturers of vacuum dryers and vacuum pumps for the production processes of chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, has recently introduced on the market an innovative horizontal paddle dryer. It is Planex System, a multi-patented machine, which is conquering the most demanding operators from all around the world, by guaranteeing results that were unthinkable till now with conventional systems, both horizontal and vertical. Designed to dry wet feed from filtration and centrifuging processes Planex System is ideal for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), fine chemicals and intermediates. The major added-value of Planex System is the eccentric agitator with two independent movements that can simultaneously revolve around its own axis and rotate tangentially to the drying chamber. The combined rotations of the agitator and its small size compared to the drying chamber diameter, ensures the perfect mixing of the entire batch, and allows consuming at least three times less energy than conventional dryers with concentric agitators. This means a

three-fold reduction in mechanical and thermal stresses on the batch being dried (Analysis by Politecnico di Torino’s Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering). As a result, even the most delicate and temperaturesensitive products are treated with maximum care. But there is more. The Planex System control software allows to automatically command the agitator movements with the Stop & Swing program. In this way, the agitator swings back and forth, thus remaining all the time immersed in the product, and guaranteeing its continuous mixing. This approach is particularly effective when processing small batches. Moreover Planex System, thanks to its agitator’s ZeroFriction planetary movement, prevents the product from being rubbed against the drying chamber walls and thus heating up due to friction, a typical problem in conventional paddle systems. In addition, the rotation of the paddles tangentially to the chamber walls, conveys the product into the small clearance between the agitator and the chamber surface, preventing lumps formation and guaranteeing an even more effective drying and a controlled final particle size distribution, which is impossible to achieve with conventional dryers. The minimum clearance between agitator profile and chamber walls not only prevents product build-ups, but it also makes discharge significantly easier. In addition, there is a specific automatic program for the discharge operations. These operations are even more effective thanks to the “pendulum” movement of the agitator (the agitator “pendulum” movement), which swings by 90 degrees in the discharge area. As a result, the amount of product left in the Planex System chamber after
ZeroFriction®
planetary
discharge is truly minimal, averaging less than 1% of the volume. Planex System also features outstanding loading flexibility. The system is available with total volumes ranging from 150 to 3,200 liters. Maximum loading capacity depends on the product to be processed, and can vary from 15% to 80% of the chamber volume. The system can meet all the production needs of the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as it is capable of processing small amounts of product as well as large batches. Planex System is safe for operators, the environment and the product, because it is designed and manufactured in compliance with European Union ATEX Directives and CE marking requirements, as well as with the increasingly stringent US FDA standards and cGMP Current Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations. Manufacturing Materials All the parts of Planex System that come into contact with the product are made of AISI 316L stainless steel, but other weldable materials such as Alloy C-22 and AISI 904L are available on request. The drying chamber walls, the agitator shaft and the access hatch are heated by diathermal fluid circulation to prevent cold spots that could cause solvent condensation or product buildup. Internal surfaces of the drying chamber are lapped or electropolished to optimize corrosion resistance, reduce adhesion

and friction on the product, improve powder flow behaviour and facilitate cleaning operations. The shaft of the agitator is complete with a double mechanical seal system, studied to guarantee the perfect vacuum tightness and the absolute purity of the dried batch, avoiding any risk of contamination of the product. The mechanical seal may be of conventional type with wet flushing or run dry with nitrogen immission. Cleaning Planex System is designed and developed to make cleaning operations outstandingly fast and effective. This is an important consideration for any machine, and one that is absolutely essential for a dryer that customers from all around the world have selected for its versatility and ability to be used in multi-product assets. Ease of cleaning, in fact, means that all the operations involved in washing the interior of the dryer, removing the internal parts, inspecting the unit and cleaning the exterior are simple and straightforward.
Clean room installation.
Pilot Trials
The fully accessible chamber interior, with no hard-to-reach zones or areas that could trap product residues, ensures that the entire dryer can be perfectly cleaned. To make the washing operation even more effective, the dryer is equipped with an efficient CIP system with retractable rotating washing head. Equipping Planex System with the CIP washing unit not only guarantees perfect cleaning, it also provides significant savings: the agitator’s off-centered position enables it to rotate during washing, thus reducing the amount of liquid needed.
In its factory Italvacuum has a range of pilot systems, which allow carrying out semi-industrial scale drying tests on customer’s products. During pilot trials, product samples can be taken for analysis without breaking the vacuum and the process parameters can be modified at any time in order to reach the ideal drying process. In this way customers can choose the Italvacuum system that best meets their needs.
Internal Parts Removal Thanks to its special structure, the agitator can be readily disassembled into removable sectors, thus making cleaning operations even more effective. This is an exclusive feature that makes Planex System a one-of-a-kind dryer: in conventional systems, the agitator is made of a single structure and removing it requires the use of bulky equipment and long system downtimes. Internal Inspection The big front-opening hatch provides full access to the entire drying chamber. Other advantages include the agitator’s offcentered position. This allows the operator to have more room to work, making it even faster and easier to carry out swab testing. External Cleaning The exterior of Planex System is also easy to clean. The entire machine is housed in a sealed external casing (cGMP particlefree configuration) which encloses the insulation and all electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic circuits. In addition, no support to the machine is present in the clean room, as the drying chamber is flange-mounted on the wall. In this way the chamber exterior can be cleaned quickly and effectively, avoiding product accumulations in slots or junctions. These features, combined with the partitioning approach, permit clean room installation, so that the clean area can be pressurized and kept separate from the technical area.

etermining which technologies to use to meet corporate social responsibility (CSR) targets, with a goal to specify across all operations, is a critical decision that can yield substantial returns to the bottom line, but the process is unwieldy and often the corporate channels for implementing new technologies are not well-defined, whether in terms of budget or in terms of the approval process. There are many options you can use for energy reduction goals, such as LED lighting, boiler economizers and thermal insulation coatings (TICs), but determining which will give you the best ongoing return on investment, shortest payback and longest lifespan can take some time. For example, the payback period for installing LED bulbs in a factory can be in the range of three years (Ref 1), but the payback period for installing a thermal insulation coating (TIC) in a factory to insulate heat process equipment can be 6-18 months (Ref 2). That’s a big difference in the time to recoup your initial investment. To make the right decision on the best technologies to implement for improved company sustainability, you also need to
review where you use the most energy and which projects make the most impact. According to the US Department of Energy, 45.3% of energy used in an industrial facility is for process heating, while the HVAC/Lighting use about 8.6%, So there is a strong case to be made for a technology that can insulate heat process equipment, where most energy is being consumed, and be used to hit multiple sustainability targets beyond just energy reduction. Do you participate in the sustainability planning and implementation programs at your corporation? If so, you may want to review TICs, such as Synavax TM thermal insulation coatings. Some of the main sustainability goals that you will see on many CSRs are: • Energy Reduction • Waste Reduction • Lowering Carbon or GHG Emissions • Improved Employee Health and Safety • Water Use Reduction The more targets you can positively impact with one technology, the lower your overall cost is for implementing a company-wide sustainability program. A unique thing about a thermal insulation coating, such as Synavax TM Heat Shield TM line of TICs, is that it can help you reach multiple sustainability targets, such as energy reduction, waste reduction. carbon/GHG emissions reduction and improved employee health and safety.
amidst the intense pressure to keep production lines running and optimized. Often times the only measures that are implemented are those that have been used for decades, such as mineral wool or fiberglass. Although these measures work, they can only go so far to impact the overall energy savings, emissions reduction and other costs savings for your operations.

The Right Technology Can Help You Meet Several CSR Goals for Sustainability
How Energy Use and Emissions are Connected According to the US Energy Information Administration (Ref 3), the key US energy-related carbon dioxide emissions sources are: • Coal •
Natural Gas
•
Petroleum
•
Electricity
•
Other combustion waste materials
There is a direct connection between energy use and carbon and GHG emissions. Fossil fuels supply 82% of the primary energy consumed in the United States and are responsible for 94% of total carbon dioxide emissions (Ref 4). Some Key Ways that TICs can Contribute to Energy and Emissions Reduction Goals • Insulate boilers, steam pipes and other heat process equipment to reduce LNG, oil and coal use
What most company leaders have in common when looking for sustainable technologies are intense time constraints having the dual responsibilities of running day-to-day operations and the mandate to improve sustainability and lower energy consumption in their focus of control from the production lines, to the power stations, to the actual physical plant itself. All our insulation coatings are low VOC, so using them won’t negatively contribute to additional emissions into the atmosphere
Did you know that a simple project with thermal insulation coatings can equate to a reduction of 162 metric tonnes of GHG emissions annually? Hospital Steam Pipe Insulation Study Synavax TM Heat Shield High Heat TIC
was used at a large hospital for steam pipe insulation. The application used an 8-coat coverage, which is approximately 8/1000 th of an inch thickness and provided approximately a 110 0F (61 oC) temperature reduction, lowering the surface temperature from 302 0F (150 oC) to 192 oF (88.9 oC) degrees. How this Equates to Meeting Carbon and GHG Emission Reduction Goals For every 1,000 SF of steam pipe surface area insulated per the results above, the following is possible: • Annual energy savings of 3,046.20 MMBtu/year •
Based on today’s energy dollars, that is $8,285.66 USD/year savings on liquid natural gas
•
Reduction of 162 Metric Tons of GHG emissions, according to the US EPA’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equivalency calculator. (Ref 5)
•
Equivalent savings of 376 barrels of oil per year
Improved Employee Safety Another CSR goal that can be met by insulating equipment is improved employee safety. Insulating hot equipment can lower the exterior surface temperature to a safe to touch range (typically about 140oF/60oC). An insulation coating can also reduce the heat radiated into the working environment from a large piece of equipment like a boiler or industrial oven, thus reducing chance of heat stroke and related issues. Reducing Waste with Corrosion and CUI Prevention While anti-corrosion is not typically the first consideration when checking the list of corporate sustainability goals, it fits right into a key category – Waste Reduction. Protecting your equipment from the damage of corrosion means a longer replacement cycle and less physical waste and monetary waste purchasing equipment before it is truly needed. It costs less to protect your equipment that it does to have to replace it early due to corrosion-caused failure. In fact, corrosion under insulation costs an estimated $2.5 trillion annually according to a study by NACE International, and implementing corrosion prevention can result in a global savings of 15-35% of that cost. It is cost-efficient to use a TIC that also prevents corrosion for insulating equipment for a dual benefit. While they are sought after most for their powerful energy saving benefits, they are a concentrated, multipurpose technology that also prevents corrosion and corrosion under insulation (CUI). Some Key Ways that TICs can Contribute to your Waste Reduction Goals: • Preserve metal assets to reduce waste and the energy required to make new items.
Textile mill heat process equipment insulated with a clear high temperature thermal insulation coating as part of a company-wide sustainability project.
•
Aid in the refurbishing and reuse of tanks, pipes and other equipment.
•
Prevent waste by coating your outdoor structures, including handrails, metal cages, awnings, statues and beams.

AODD Pumps for Chemical Processes Since their invention more than 60 years ago, AODD pumps have become pigeonholed by many pump users, who see them as only usable in utilitarian, auxiliary or basic liquidhandling and transfer applications. In reality, thanks to a series of noteworthy refinements that have economized the AODD pump’s method of operation, the unit can now be considered a true “process” pump and has gained acceptance as such in the diverse sectors of the chemical process industries (CPI), including paints and coatings, ceramics, adhesives and sealants, foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
A
ir-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps have earned a reputation as a technology that is well-suited for utilitarian, auxiliary or basic liquid-handling and transfer applications thanks to their design characteristics that allow them to obtain dry self-prime, run dry, maintain suction lift up to 30 feet (9 meters or 14.7 psia), withstand deadhead pumping conditions, operate while completely submerged and pass solids up to 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter. In reality, though, these characteristics have also allowed AODD pumps to be extremely effective in more delicate liquid-handling applications, including those that are prevalent in the pharmaceutical and food-and-beverage industries. Thanks to a series of technological advancements from Wilden® the AODD can now be considered a true “process” pump, having gained acceptance as such in diverse industries like paint and coatings, ceramics, adhesives and sealants, oil and gas, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics. When one of the largest independent chemical distributors in the United States relocated to a new, larger facility with expanded warehousing, blending, packaging, clean room and warm room areas it needed a pump technology that could perform well in a number of unique operating environments. The solution was to equip the facility with bolted AODD pumps, which possess the capability to handle a plethora of different chemicals that would need to pass safely through the facility. Then there was the case of the leader in solvent production for use in the
Indonesian paint-and-coatings market which needed to improve the operational efficiencies at its production plants, where the time needed to load and unload holding tanks was becoming prohibitive. After performing onsite tests, the plant’s operators learned that advanced AODD pump air motor technology could not only reduce the transfer times through higher flow rates, but could do so with decreased compressed air consumption compared to competitive products, thus reducing the operating costs of the fluid transfer.
operational characteristics. While air loss has been a constant concern within the operational window of AODD pumps, the earliest ADSs were designed first and foremost to battle another operational irregularity in the AODD pump’s performance: stalling and icing. It was only once those performance inhibitors were conquered that designers turned their attention to developing ways to more efficiently govern the pump’s air consumption.
Despite the fact that AODD pumps have, from day one, proven their effectiveness in utilitarian liquid-transfer applications, there has always been one annoying glitch in their operation: at the end of every pump stroke, a small, but still significant, amount of air was wasted. This kept the pump from operating at its most efficient and added to its bottom line cost of operation.
One of the first ADSs designed to promote energy efficiency featured a dial that could be used to tune the pump’s operating speed by restricting the amount of air that was allowed to enter the pump. It’s a fact of AODD pump life that a slower running pump is more efficient. For example, a dial-in ADS running at full throttle may consume 50 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of air in order to pump 100 gallons per minute (gpm) of fluid. Using the dial, the incoming compressed air can be dialed back to a 35-scfm rate, where the pump will transfer the liquid at a flow rate of 80 gpm. This is a 20% reduction in flow rate, accompanied by a 30% reduction in air consumption, which makes the pump more efficient.
Because of that, AODD pump manufacturers – led, of course, by Wilden – were always searching for ways to decrease or eliminate the air loss at the end of the pump stroke. This has led to a Series of advancements in Air Distribution System (ADS) technology that have enabled the AODD pump to optimize air usage (and cost) while still maintaining its standard-setting
While the dial-in ADS represented an undoubted advance in AODD pump operation, there was still more field that needed to be plowed if pump performance was to hit the sweet spot in optimized air consumption. That day came in 2013 with the development of a new ADS technology that featured a revolutionary air control spool, which is shaped, more or less, like an hourglass. This innovation was driven
While these examples may show that AODD pumps can be considered process pumps in critical applications across a wide variety of industries, this has only become possible once some noteworthy refinements in their operation were made. The Air In There

When working with a centrifugal pump, the fluid viscosity is a design factor in the pump equipment and its selection for a specific application. Impeller dimensions and styles are specifically tailored to be compatible with thick or thin fluids, making moving a pump from one application to the other not really workable. Working with an AODD pump, however, the viscosity need not be a factor for operation. This is the real benefit of the AODD pump in this realm – its ability to handle multiple or different viscosities without regard for equipment setup.
The chart above illustrates how the next-generation operation of the Pro-Flo® SHIFT ADS from Wilden® is able to eliminate the wasteful air overfilling that occurs at the end of each pump stroke with traditional AODD pump designs.
by an evaluation of the pressure dynamics that occur within the AODD pump during its operation. This evaluation clearly revealed that air consumption was significantly impacted by an increase in air pressure at the end of each diaphragm stroke. Specifically, when the shaft would come to a full stop at the end of each stroke a shift signal would be sent to indicate that the flow of air should cease. However, there was a small time lag between the stopping of the shaft and the sending of the signal, meaning that the full force of the compressor continued to push compressed air into the air chamber, but that air was not doing any actual work and was lost to the atmosphere upon exhaust. The function of the air control spool reduces the amount of air that is allowed into the pump at the end of the stroke, which drastically reduces the amount of
“wasted” energy that had traditionally been “force fed” into the pump. This allows the AODD pump to experience up to 60% savings in air consumption, while delivering more yield per scfm than AODD pump models that feature legacy ADSs. Through Thick And Thin The favorable reputation of AODD pumps is built on the technology’s versatility, or ability to handle a wide range of liquids with varying characteristics. One of the most important is viscosity, or the thickness of the liquid that is being transferred, since the pump’s true best operational efficiency is only achieved if the lowest possible amount of scfms of air are consumed while delivering the highest possible flow rate, no matter the viscosity. Specifically, in the operation of AODD pumps, slip is almost eliminated, regardless of the viscosity of the fluid, as
Marketing Initiative
it is controlled by the ball check valves in the pump. Other technologies such as gear, screw and lobe pumps have fixed tolerances to control slip, which makes them unable to adequately adjust to viscosity changes.
For example, gear pumps may be a good choice for very thick oil or viscous liquids, but they are poor choices for thinner liquids like ethanol or water. The AODD pump, on the other hand, is a jack-of-alltrades that does not care if the fluid is thick, thin, particulate-free or laden with particulates; its design allows it to pull in the liquid, no matter its composition, and drive it downstream. AODD pump manufacturers do publish viscosity correction tables, but these are simply helpful in predicting pump performance given specific system discharge and air inlet pressures and a known viscosity. In reality, the design of the AODD pump does not need to change for liquids that have highly viscous or very thin consistencies. AODD pump manufacturers are also taking steps to improve the flow path of their pumps, which will make it even easier to efficiently transfer highly viscous or particulate-laden liquids. In fact, some newer AODD pump models with redesigned and optimized wetted paths deliver flow rates up to 50% higher than legacy models. This enhanced flow capability may also allow the operator to use, for example, a 2-inch pump where a 3-inch model may have been the choice in the past, with attendant initial cost of ownership and maintenance cost reductions – smaller pumps, smaller price.

Marketing Initiative Among the benefits that a Wilden® air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump outfitted with the Pro-Flo® SHIFT ADS can offer chemical processors are significant savings in air consumption, more yield per standard cubic feet per minute (scfm), easy maintenance and the ability to handle a wide range of corrosive or hazardous liquids.
A caveat must be noted, though, that the AODD pump does have a few performance limitations, most commonly on the suction side of the pump, since the only pressure that is available to bring the liquid to the pump is atmospheric. In cases of extreme suction conditions, the physical location of the pump relative to the pumped media is a crucial component of application success, ie, the pump should be moved as close to the source of the fluid as possible. This will reduce the line friction leading to the pump. Whenever possible, locate the pump below the supply tank – this will enable gravity to assist the “feeding” of the pump. Also, eliminate as many fittings and elbows on the suction side of the pump as possible. Operators and system designers may additionally consider over-sizing the plumbing leading to the pump, all in an effort to reduce friction on the suction side. These are some of the tricks of the trade that can be used to take advantage of the AODD pump’s versatility and ability to optimize air consumption and liquid flow rates.
Discussing Diaphragms
Chemically Speaking
There is no question that the improvements in overall AODD pump operation and ADS capabilities have been significant over the years, and the same can be said for diaphragm materials and design. As AODD pumps have begun to be used in more process-type applications the advances in diaphragm performance have kept pace.
So, what does all this mean for the chemical-processing industry? By definition, chemical manufacture features some of the most intricate and complex industrial processes in the world. The complexity of chemical manufacture is highlighted by the number of so-called “unit operations” that must be completed during the overall manufacturing process.
Correct diaphragm material selection is critical to ensure safe AODD pump operation, with six primary factors to consider when choosing a diaphragm: chemical compatibility, temperature range, abrasion resistance, flex life, performance and cost. To help meet these diverse operational criteria, the number of effective diaphragm materials has also grown and now consists of three basic subsets: Synthetic rubber (Neoprene, Buna-N, EPDM and Viton), thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) (polyurethane, Santoprene, Hytrel and Geolast) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon). Manufacturers have experts on hand to help pump users select the best diaphragm material and design for their applications.
One of the most critical of these unit operations is the transfer of liquids along the production chain. Because of the importance of the myriad transferring operations within the entire chemicalmanufacturing process – raw materials to storage tanks, raw materials to blending tanks, finished products into fixed-weight containers, etc – facility operators need to identify the best pumping technology for the job, one that possesses the versatility to perform reliably and efficiently at any number of points in the production hierarchy. It had almost become a rote choice among chemical manufacturers that centrifugal

A closer look, through, shows that despite its reputation, the centrifugal pump does not appear to be the all-conquering technology that is required for efficient and optimized chemical-processing applications. Specifically, centrifugal pumps work best when they are operated at their Best Efficiency Point (BEP). Unfortunately, that BEP is rarely realized for an extended period of time during fluidtransfer operations, which results in flow rates that can fluctuate constantly. Additionally, consistent operation off the BEP can lead to potential problems, not only from the equipment’s operational point of view, but also in regard to the production process and the way the chemical is formulated. Also, when a centrifugal pump operates to the left of its BEP, radial loads increase due to the way the pump generates pressure along its volute by reducing the fluid velocity. This method of operation increases shaft deflection at the seal faces, which results in increased seal wear and a decrease in the pump’s life expectancy. Working to the left of the curve will also increase axial loads that can overload the thrust bearings, especially in open-impeller and diffuser-type multistage centrifugal pumps. Finally, as a centrifugal pump operates close to the zero-flow point (zero efficiency), heat will be generated at levels that can be highly harmful to heat-sensitive chemicals or products themselves, which can also adversely affect safety and the quality of the resulting product. At the other end of the spectrum, when a centrifugal pump works to the right of BEP other problems can be created. Specifically, the level of net positive suction head (NPSH) required increases, which may cause efficiency-harming cavitation to occur. Since the liquidtransfer process in the chemical industry, particularly when handling specialty chemicals, is managed in batches, an insufficient NPSH condition may be
more complicated to detect, but it will deteriorate the pump’s operational capabilities continuously, meaning that the pump’s ability to handle any cavitation that occurs will be compromised. By comparison, the fluid-delivery curve for an AODD pump is very similar to that of the centrifugal unit, without the negative behaviour that occurs when running off the BEP. The AODD pump will perform based on the inlet air pressure supplied to the pump and the system pressure it encounters. If adequate suction pressure is available, fluid will flow into the pump and be discharged based on the relationship between the air pressure operating the pump and the system pressure. The larger this pressure differential is, the faster the pump will operate, and when the differential is reduced, the pump’s operation will slow. This is referred to as “infinitely variable speed operation.” If the system pressure should increase unexpectedly, the pump will operate until the inlet air and system pressure are equal, at that time the AODD pump will stop – in what is termed a “deadhead” condition – with no equipment damage. The system remains pressurized, but no differential pressure exists to continue driving fluid. The pump will restart when the system pressure falls below the operating air pressure, which is particularly important in batch processes. In contrast, a closed valve can wreak havoc on a centrifugal pump, and with different positive displacement pump technologies operating against a closed valve can cause damage or destroy a system by reaching the burst pressure of the plumbing in very short order. If a valve is restricted on the inlet side of a centrifugal pump, the pump can cavitate, leading to impeller and volute damage. If the inlet were closed completely, the operator should expect bearing and wear-ring failure due to heat buildup. If this condition occurs when operating an AODD pump, the pump will slow and if the inlet were closed completely, the pump would
stop, waiting for the inlet line to be open once more, when it would resume its pumping operations. In summation, AODD pumps can match the supposed advantages that centrifugal pumps may have while also shining an even brighter spotlight on the centrifugal pump’s troubling operational disadvantages. ◘

pumps were the best technology for transfer operations within the chemical plant, for a few reasons.

aying special attention to rotors and coolers is pivotal to achieving high performance for centrifugal compressors. This is one example of some of the maintenance practices that will move machine performance from good to great. Leveraging Ingersoll Rand’s global expertise, this article summarizes maintenance practices that can boost system performance, yield fewer breakdowns, reduce operating costs and improve productivity. The first section of this article offers best practices in five key maintenance areas. The second section focuses on rotor assembly maintenance and the advantages of working with an expert to maintain compressors. The final section discusses rebuilds, reconditioning and rerates. 1) Conduct Preventative Maintenance Centrifugal compressors are used widely across many industries, as they require less maintenance while providing higher airflow than similar-sized positivedisplacement compressors. With few moving parts and an energy-efficient design, they are simpler to maintain and also offer lower comparative lifecycle costs. As with any high performance equipment, environmental conditions, wear or neglect can affect centrifugal performance. Conducting practical maintenance can extend the operating life and system performance levels. 2) Customize Maintenance Programs It is worth noting that regardless of how similar two facilities may be, their maintenance needs may differ dramatically. Centrifugal compressor
operators should customize maintenance programs to specific equipment by taking into consideration unique operating conditions, hours of operation, the volume of starts and stops, seasonal shutdowns, and equipment age. By following good-practice basics, including regular inspection, cleaning, adjustment and repair, compressor owners can realize greater system reliability and performance. They also can improve environmental performance, worker safety and cost-efficiency of their operation. 3) Conduct Daily Inspections Daily or shift change inspections provide operators with a baseline understanding of normal operating conditions. They are also excellent ways to catch early signs of trouble, which can include atypical noises, discolored oil, leaks, atypical vibrations, temperature variations or condensate drain clogs, before they impact the performance of the machine. A single deviation alone might not be enough to cause system failure, but when several deviations combine, the risk of failure increases dramatically. Recognizing minor changes in operation and responding appropriately can help reduce risk and keep compressors running reliably. Routine items that fall into daily inspections include recording your system’s operating parameters, wiping external surfaces, checking for leaks and checking condensate drain function.
Advantages of Preventative Centrifugal Compressor Maintenance •
Routine non-invasive analysis of compressor component condition is significantly more economical than invasive, unplanned maintenance
•
Controlled maintenance when needed can prevent catastrophic failure and reduces overall costs
•
Maintenance planning is simplified when equipment performance is confidently understood
•
Reduced unplanned downtime for increased production and revenue
Major centrifugal compressor breakdowns can result in damaged impellers, gears and motors, and an increase in repair costs well beyond the cost of scheduled preventative maintenance. Emergency repairs can run as much as three times the cost of standard maintenance work and replacing a complete rotor assembly can run many times more. Preventative maintenance involving professional inspection and timely replacement of common components is not only best practice, but it is also particularly important to avoid a protracted shutdown that could seriously affect production. A typical preventative service checklist should cover a thorough inspection of the drive motor, gear case operation, cooler and lubrication systems, control panel and valve operation, and all filter elements.
4) Schedule Routine Maintenance
5) Pay Special Attention to Coolers and Rotor Assemblies
As with any type of rotating industrial machinery, regular maintenance is key to identifying and reducing repair costs.
Rotors and cooler components are central to high-performing aerodynamics of today’s turbo machines, so regular

Inspect for inorganic debris and potentially corrosive acids. Lack of inspection and maintenance can create numerous problems with air and oil coolers including elevated temperatures that can impact overall compressor performance, affect bearing life and downstream processes. Organic and inorganic debris as well as potentially corrosive acids may flow through the coolers and foul the cooler tubes. In addition to monitoring cooling water quality to minimize fouling, it is important to conduct periodic inspections and cleanings to maintain the mechanical performance of the compressor. Routinely check cooler performance. The condition and life of any cooler can be positively affected with proper maintenance. With proper cleaning and maintenance, a heat exchanger can perform well for years. Operators should regularly check cooler performance by measuring the cold temperature difference (CTD). CTD is the difference between water entering and the air leaving the cooler and should register at 15 o F or better. Scheduled cleaning will depend on the quality of the water source and how the equipment is being used. Both the water and air-sides must be cleaned and the condensate drain should also be inspected to ensure moisture is not compromising the quality of the compressed air and downstream performance. For waterside cleaning, use an air gun or tube-cleaning kit with a range of brush sizes. Begin by probing the length of the tube with a diameter rod to check for any obstructions. If standard U-tubes are part of the cooler design, do not force the rod into the U-bend. With the tube sheets up, fill the tubes with a commercial descaling agent and allow to
stand for two hours. During this process, pay special attention to keep chemical cleaners away from the aluminum fins.
condensate drains should be inspected daily and cleaned on a quarterly basis or sooner, if needed.
Once complete, carefully drain the descaling solution from the tubes and flush thoroughly with water. Create a simple rod-and-brush assembly by attaching a soft bristle nylon or brass brush to a rod. Connected to a drill motor, this simple mechanism can be used to remove build-up from tube walls while flushing with clean water. Drain the water and refill the tubes with the descaler allowing to process for one hour before flushing again with clean water. This time with a brush sized accordingly for the diameter of the tube, use the rod-and-brush assembly to further clean tubes while simultaneously flushing with clean water.
Modern compressors are built with service and maintenance in mind. Maintenance on newer models such as the Ingersoll Rand Centac C800 and C1000 or TURBO-AIR NX 12000 air compressors is made easier with an open-cooler casing and design that offers easy access to critical package components.
For air-side cleaning, compressed air, pressurized steam or chemicals can be used when cleaning the intercooler fins. Removing the upper and lower baffle plates will provide access to the complete finned surface. Fins can be cleaned with low-pressure steam or water and if debris has accumulated use an aluminum-friendly chemical cleaning agent. Be sure to inspect and carefully straighten any bent fins before replacing the baffle plates. Inspecting and cleaning the condensate removal system following cooler cleaning is essential to avoiding contamination that can damage intercooler fins, inlets, diffusers and impellers. Often overlooked as part of preventative maintenance,

inspection and proper maintenance are key to maintaining system reliability and performance. Many of today’s modern centrifugal compressor designs allow operators greater access to perform routine inspections and cleaning tasks.
Focus on Rotor Assembly Maintenance One of the greatest advantages of a centrifugal compressor is that it has very few moving parts, which minimizes mechanical problems, maintenance and energy losses due to friction. Other than the bullgear and driver, the only other moving part in a centrifugal compressor is the rotor, making it one of the most critical components of the system. Even with routine maintenance and normal operation, the rotating assembly will attract a buildup of solids on the induction side of the impeller and can cause increased vibration on the individual stages of the compressor as well as decreased efficiency. The amount of acceptable vibration varies among models, however, as the pinion vibration increases, the likelihood of nuisance trips or even premature failure of the pinion and/or bearings increases. Failures of this type can be costly if replacement of the part is required. Routine

performed by either an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or an expert repair service will prevent premature wear, keep the compressor running at peak performance and extend the use of your original rotor assembles for an indefinite period. After acquiring vibration and phase measurements, rotor balancing may be required. The cleaning process begins with glass-bead blasting to remove all dirt and debris from the impellers. Pinions are polished on a high-speed lathe to ready them for inspection including mechanical and electrical runout analysis, which should be done prior to and after any repair work. Many corrections and repeat checks may be required to achieve precision balancing and operational reliability. Unlike cooler cleaning that can be done in the field, rotors are precisionmachined parts and balancing requires the specialised knowledge and experience of an OEM service provider with competent application capability. Rebuilds Return Long-Life Turbo Machines to Full Performance At some point, every compressor eventually requires replacement or rebuilding to regain full performance. Worn electrical components, widening tolerances between moving parts, corroded heat-transfer surfaces and other issues related to tens of thousands of run-time hours can lead to recurring failures and lost capacity. The total installed cost of new equipment can be high and difficult to justify. Managers must factor in peripheral costs such as new electrical rough-in, concrete and site work, and demolition. When capital funds are constrained, maintenance budgets can often cover the expense of rebuilding without the need for capitalization. With centrifugal compressors specifically, the best choice is often to renew or rebuild due to the long life design of these turbo machines. Virtually any element from the main oil
pump to internal parts such as impellers, diffusers, scrolls and seals can be OEM-factory reconditioned with little to no sacrifice in quality or longevity, bringing a compressor back to “like new” condition. When undertaking an extended service such as a rebuild, a safe bet is to work with an OEM known for aftermarket services. Not all technicians are equally skilled. OEM technicians at aftermarket facilities such as those at Ingersoll Rand participate in extensive annual training and are highly skilled in centrifugal rebuild specifics and tolerances. Service exchange programs will help minimize downtime, eliminate rental costs and other backup requirements. Be sure your rebuild comes with the promise of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) replacement parts and a “no weld” policy, particularly on precision parts such as impellers. Safety and quality must go hand-inhand and practices such as setting wider clearances to compensate for inaccuracies can impact the structural integrity inherent to the safe and reliable performance of centrifugal compressors. Make sure to get a performance test in accordance with ASME PTC-10 or ISO 5389 procedures. For additional peace of mind, a reputable aftermarket service provider such as Ingersoll Rand will provide assurance that a factory reconditioned compressor will perform in accordance with its day-one specifications.
maintenance including filters and fluids as well as cooler and impeller cleaning. Although designed for minimal maintenance, the long-term performance and reliability of any centrifugal compressor depends on routine onsite inspection, daily maintenance and professional servicing performed by technicians with the in-depth knowledge and experience required to keep the plant operating reliably and efficiently. Safety is important to any maintenance practice and it is imperative to follow the recommended procedures and warnings identified in the owner's manual. It is assumed that these maintenance recommendations will be performed by a trained member of the maintenance team or by a technician who is qualified and knowledgeable in the safe practices and handling of the materials discussed in this article. Modifications and Rerates can Increase the Operational Life and Value of your Compressor As plant processes change so do compressed air requirements. Reconditioning your compressor can generate savings by re-rating the system to meet new pressure or flow requirements while improving efficiency. Whether, lowering pressure or updating design, energy savings can quickly offset the cost of reconditioning. A reconditioned unit will require similar

ADM FLOW METER
LEAK DETECTION
Maintaining a NIST-Certified flow meter is easier and more convenient than ever. Now you can replace the flow meter cartridge in your own lab to recalibrate – increasing uptime while saving time and money spent on shipping and paperwork. The Agilent ADM flow meter is a reliable platform for measuring volumetric gas flow without having to know the gas composition (limited to non-caustic gases). Moreover, the Agilent ADM flow meter does not have to be shipped back for recalibration to maintain NIST-Traceable Standards. Simply order a new NIST-calibrated cartridge and replace the old cartridge yourself. A built-in calibration timer automatically warns you when the calibration cartridge needs replacing. This minimizes the risk of volumetric measurement drift. The kickstand feature allows you to conveniently operate above bench level. There is no need to ship the flow meter out every time a firmware upgrade is needed. Large OLED display lets you see the flow parameters without having to stand next to the device.
Bonfiglioli leak detection equipment represents the most modern approach for micro leak detection and head space analysers for all types of closed and sealed containers like glass and plastic vials, blow-fill-seal packs, plastic strip packs, blister packs, plastic and glass ampoules, pouches and bottles. WATER METER
The instrument works on the principle of Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. A magnetic field is generated by the instrument in the flow tube. The fluid flowing through this magnetic field generates a voltage that is proportional to the flow velocity. This voltage is measured by the electronics and a corresponding output provided. It accepts any voltage from 90 to 265 V AC. Measures the flow in both forward and reverse directions. It provides a separate totalized volume value for flow in each direction. Easy monitoring of the process even in hard to reach places. Designed to meet global requirements and available with international approvals.
The operation of the water flow meter is a simple user-friendly way to operate easily. The water flow meter is an impeller multi-jet type flow meter with measuring inserts made up of engineering plastics. The water meter has a provision for fixing of external digital pulse sensors suitable for remote and digital pulse transmissions for monitoring through BMS systems and batching purposes with PLC, etc. This flow meter is used to measure the water consumption in apartment/flats, IT park area, hospitals and malls. Industry News
New Delhi, India: National Federation of Farmers' Procurement, Processing and Retailing Cooperatives of India Limited (NACOF) have announced that it has entered into a long-term agreement to obtain Muriate of Potash (MOP) from the Canada-based Encanto Potash Corp. As per the contract, Encanto will supply minimum 5 million tonnes per year of MOP for a guaranteed period of twenty years to NACOF. Food security attained via procurement of an alternative supply of MOP and excluding middlemen for Indian farmers is an essential objective for NACOF. Stavros Daskos, President, Encanto, stated, “This is evidently a significant moment for our company and the industry. India imports 100 per cent of its potash and is prone to cartel-like practices from producers that can hurt its national food security. Establishing long term offtake agreements are difficult and necessitate a great amount of time and understanding of a country's food security policies and how they interface with the dynamics of a supply environment controlled by a small number of entities.” Factually, potash consumption in India had reached around 6 million tonnes in 2010-11, and their aim, as per the Ministries of Chemicals and Fertilizers, is to return to this level as potassium is required in large amounts to endure and grow their crop based industry. The relatively high retail cost of MOP and other potash-based fertilisers in India encouraged many farmers to support the use of fertilisers biased towards higher nitrogen content due to their lower cost. NACOF and Encanto believe a protected and stable supply of MOP at rational prices will incentivise India's farmers to progress to a balanced fertilisation program where the growth rate in consumption of potash-based fertilisers will be higher than the growth rate of consumption of substitute fertilisers. The Indian government has set an objective to double the farmer's income in the next five years, and continues its efforts to educate Indian farmers on the long term benefits and latent increases to crop yield that can be realised from a balanced and strategic fertilisation program. Soil health assessments being provided by the Indian government and constant marketing targeted at farmers will play a vital role to help prevent over-use and misuse of urea fertilisers.

Bayer-Monsanto Merger will be a Winner, says Lux Research
L & T H y d ro c a r b o n - E M A S C h i yo d a S u b s e a Consortium Bags Two Contracts from Saudi Aramco
Leverkusen, Germany: German giant Bayer’s $ 66 billion procurement of Monsanto is a winning deal that will create a global player with robust positions in key areas of agriculture innovation, comprising crop and seed traits, synthetic agrochemicals, and biologicals, as per Lux Research. However, the combined entity will be weak in Digital Ag, or precision agriculture.
Mumbai, India: L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering-EMAS Chiyoda Subsea consortium has announced that it has won two EPCI contracts from Saudi Aramco. The contract is awarded to supply and install four wellhead decks in the Safaniya field and another award to upgrade on 17 platforms in various offshore fields in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia.
Of the latest spate of megamergers in agriculture, the BayerMonsanto deal stands out not only because it is the major one, but also because it will create a company with substantial market shares in both agrichemicals and seeds. The new agriculture landscape will be even more amalgamated as the traditional ‘Big Six’ become the ‘Behemoth Four’ - Bayer-Monsanto, Dow-DuPont, Syngenta-ChemChina, and BASF. “Bayer wins by procuring Monsanto’s diversified capabilities in crop and seed traits, while the U.S. company gains Bayer’s robust IP portfolio in synthetic agrochemicals. Together, the collective entity will be much stronger than other entities in the Behemoth Four but will be lacklustre in their Digital Ag portfolio,” believed Laura Lee, Lux Research Associate and lead author of the report titled, ‘Does Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto make sense?’. Monsanto & Bayer deal having both Monsanto’s Roundup and Bayer’s Liberty brands under the same roof will give the combined entity a giant competitive advantage in agrochemicals and seeds. Monsanto’s diversified relationships across various genome editing technologies will give the duo an advantage in this space. According to Lux Research, Digital Ag is an apparent weakness. While Monsanto has built many Digital Ag partnerships, its approach is ludicrous. It has cooperated with many developers of untested technologies but ignored well-validated ones - a backwards approach. Bayer is unexpectedly strong in biologicals. Monsanto is a recognised innovator in biologicals through its partnership with Novozymes called the BioAg association. But Bayer brings its own remarkably strong biologicals portfolio, amassed through four key acquisitions – Athenix, Prophyta, AgraQuest, and Laboratorios Biagro.

The plant, which has production capacity of 12000 metric tonne per annum (MTPA), will tap the opportunity of domestic scrap accessible with the large telecom players, UPS batteries from IT offices in and around southern markets by obligating long term contracts to accumulate their pan-India scrap in cost effective manner. Being near to the Chennai port, the plant will advantage Gravita in decreasing logistics cost while exporting the finished goods. The plant, built with an investment of around ` 25 crores, will help the company to further reinforce its manifestation in Southern market and for exports in Far East markets.
The long term agreement awarded by Saudi Aramco to the LTHE-EMAS Chiyoda Subsea consortium in June last year has been very fruitful and the consortium is dignified to remain a substantial service provider to Aramco and contribute in the development of capabilities in Kingdom over the long term. “We are elated with the new awards. It is a prospect for Aramco to advantage from our flagship facility at Hazira as the centre of fabrication of the four decks in one of the contracts. It is also a prospect for our consortium to build in-Kingdom skills and capabilities to convey the brownfield work in the other project,” said Subramanian Sarma, MD & CEO, L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering. He added, “Hasbah Offshore Gas Increment Project, which is a part of the Fadhili Gas Plant is progressing well and in accordance with the plan. The consortium with our strong teams - conveying excellence in implementation and custom-built EPCI services with the state-of-the-art facilities, is dedicated to a long term contribution in Artco’s projects.”

quality products. We want to be part of that change,” expounded Jurg Weibel, Owner & Director of Granula AG.
Gujarat, India: Assocham has urged the centre government to proximately get withdrawn the notification vis-a-vis withdrawal of input tax credit on inter-state sale/branch transfer of natural gas issued by Finance Department of Gujarat government.
Granula conglomerates technological strength with flexibility to respond quickly and effectually to customer demands, from colour matching and sampling through the development of new products. The product databases of both Granula AG and GMI are interconnected, providing the new company with admission to thousands of prevailing and new formulations, and warranting the highest levels of quality and reliability across the board.
“Consequent to this announcement, cost of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) supplied by Petronet LNG to other PSU gas distributors like Gail India Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has shot up from four per cent to 15 per cent,” underlined Assocham in a communication addressed to Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman and Finance Minister of Gujarat, Nitin Patel. The letter added, “These PSUs have passed on the upsurge in tax to industry outside Gujarat, thus making RLNG costlier by 11 per cent with opposing impact oscillating from ` 2.50 to ` 3 per standard cubic meter (scm).” Considering that many industries are stuck with long-term supply agreements with PSU distributors of exorbitant RLNG and, therefore, cannot switch over to economical alternate source of energy due to ‘take or pay’ clause in supposed agreements. “This notification has thus made matters worse by making RLNG further dearer hitting industries outside Gujarat very hard. At a time when trade and industry are moving towards execution of goods and services tax (GST), this withdrawal of input tax credit is unfair for industries outside Gujarat as it is making them highly uncompetitive,” emphasized the Assocham letter.
Swiss Masterbatch Firm Granula to Set Up Production Facility in Ahmedabad Ahmedabad, India: Swiss masterbatch producer Granula AG has announced that it has formed a joint venture with Som Shiva Impex Ltd to produce and retail masterbatches in India. Masterbatch is a solid or liquid additive used for colouring plastics (colour masterbatch) or communicating other properties to plastics (additive masterbatch). The joint venture, Granula Masterbatches India Pvt Ltd (GMI), will build a masterbatch production facility equipped with the latest production technology near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GMI aims to target mainly sectors such as food packaging, medical, cosmetic and automotive in India. According to Granula, production is estimated to start in the second quarter of 2017. The snowballing need for technical proficiency in plastics in India is enhancing market demand for masterbatches. Granula claims that its masterbatch formulations transform and enhance end product properties, thus providing the reliable results that global brands depend on. “Right now, there is a giant, unmet demand for basic consumer goods in India. But this is changing fast with an enormously increasing middle class. As masterbatch producers, we see massive opportunities in the steps India is compelling to open up the domestic market and moving to higher

After a brief overview of widely used desalination technologies, this book focuses on reverse osmosis desalination. The book discusses basic principles, planning and environmental review of projects, design and selection of key desalination plant components, desalinated water post-treatment and concentrate management. Guidelines on sizing and cost-estimation of desalination plant facilities are also included in this practical resource. Coverage includes: source water quality characterization; fundamentals of reverse osmosis desalination; planning considerations; environmental review and permitting; intakes for source water collection; intake pump stations; source water screening and conditioning; sand removal, sedimentation and dissolved air flotation; pre-treatment by granular media filtration; pre-treatment by membrane filtration; comparison of granular media and membrane pre-treatment; reverse osmosis separation; post-treatment of desalinated water; desalination plant discharge management; and desalination project cost estimates.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Author: Prof A K A Rathi Price: ` 950.00 No of pages: 326 pages (Softbound) Publisher: Akar Unlimited About the book: An attempt is made in the book to include basic aspects of EIA and different components of environment, and practical guidelines on the process of preparing EIA reports for green field as well as brown field projects. Whereas what needs to be included in a typical EIA report is highlighted as output of any study and assessment, detailing of how is beyond the scope of this book considering that deep understanding is required on each environmental component and that enormous literature is available on the same. Further, the book is not intended to serve as an EIA manual though it will facilitate in preparing one. It need not be emphasized that EIA is project-specific and site-specific. Accordingly depth of coverage of environmental issues in an EIA report shall vary from project to project and location to location. It is expected that the book will be useful to the EIA professionals, EIA review/appraisal authorities, and project proponents especially in the emerging economies. The students taking courses on environmental management and EIA will find this book useful in learning practical aspects. Case studies included on some sectors, viz, mining, thermal power, port and harbour, chemical and allied, cement, cross-country pipelines, and area development and construction projects are intended for broadening horizon of the professionals interested/involved in EIA-related studies.
