In production processes of sulphuric acid and other products, measuring the sulphuric acid strength (%wt) online is important to ensure safety, resource efficiency and product quality. The LiquiSonic analyzers by SensoTech are based on sonic velocity measurement providing clear and high-precision concentration values. The real-time information can be sent to process control systems.

T

he production of sulphuric acid is an important process, because sulphuric acid is one of the chemicals most commonly used. Two main methods for the production of sulphuric acid are the double contact process and the WSA process. Both processes occur, for example, in the chemical, petrochemical and mining sector. The produced sulphuric acid is used as raw material or catalyst for the production of diverse products including processes like alkylation, syngas drying, fertilizer production, etching and pickling baths or mine-ore processing. Monitoring the sulphuric acid strength (wt%) online and in real time enhances safety and efficiency of the plants. Manual sampling is time-consuming and may involve security risks. The laboratory analyses provide only delayed data making a timely intervention in the process impossible. With inline measuring methods, the sulphuric acid strength can be monitored directly in the process and in real time. Such methods enable a continuous measurement providing the data online.

Rebecca Dettloff Marketing Manager SensoTech GmbH, Germany E-mail: info@sensotech.com

Due to the physical properties of sulphuric acid, the most suitable measuring method for determining the acid strength is sonic velocity measurement. In production processes of the chemical, petrochemical and mining industry, the relevant concentrations range from 70 wt% to 100 wt% sulphuric acid, 20 wt% to 35 wt% oleum or 50 wt% to 60 wt% oleum. Here, sonic velocity meters provide clear and high-precision data of the acid strength. In pickling and etching baths of the metal and chemical sector, the concentrations usually range between 0 wt% and 30

Features

wt%. Also in such processes, the sensors reliably measure the acid strength. In the bath, sonic velocity is combined with a second physical value to determine the salt concentration as well. If the measuring values exceed or fall below critical process thresholds, a signal will be sent immediately ensuring timely countermeasures can be initiated. The real-time information significantly increases work environment safety and product quality and reduces costs caused by acid wastage and failed production. Both a too high and a too low concentrated acid is reliably detected. Signaling a too low acid strength, sonic velocity meters are also used to recognize acid runaways. This avoids security risks, damages from corrosion and costs resulting from lost production. Furthermore, an online monitoring reduces the consumption of sulphuric acid to optimize the process efficiency. For example, in alkylation units in refineries, sonic velocity meters enable a lowering of the spent acid and an efficient control of the rate of fresh acid addition. The LiquiSonic analyzers of the company SensoTech (Figure 1) are based on sonic velocity measurement and are successfully used to determine the sulphuric acid strength in plants worldwide. The sensors are installed directly into existing pipes or vessels. Due to modern and high-end technology the sensors provide stable measuring results updated every second with an accuracy of up to 0.03 wt%. For process automation, the real-time data can be transferred to process control systems via 4-20 mA signal, digital outputs, fieldbus or Ethernet. Chemical Products Finder | June-July 2016 | 11

Features Figure 1: The LiquiSonic analyzer of SensoTech monitors precisely the sulphuric acid and oleum strength (wt%) and provides the data online and in real time.

Made of Hastelloy C-2000, the sensors are absolutely resistant to corrosion. The robust construction requires neither gaskets nor moving parts, so

the sensors are maintenance-free with long-term stability. The LiquiSonic measuring method is based on a travel time measurement, sending a sonic

signal from one to the other side of the sensor (Figure 2). Because the distance between transmitter and receiver is known and constant, the sonic velocity can be determined using the data of path and time. The concentration and sonic velocity in the acid form a clear, functional relationship. Since sonic velocity also depends on the temperature, the LiquiSonic sensor includes a highprecision temperature measurement. From the data of sonic velocity and temperature, the temperaturecompensated and repeatable calculation of the acid concentration is possible. The LiquiSonic controller displays the measuring values and in the event of deviations from reference values, a signal is sent to control systems. The measuring values are completely stored in the controller and the clear trend view provides a quick overview of the process course. Through secure remote access options via network, modem or web server, the user can operate the controller from the PC at the workplace. The analyzer is delivered as plug and play system, so a simple commissioning is guaranteed. As up to four sensors can be connected to one controller, the investment costs get lower with several measuring points. â—˜

ompression packing has been around since the beginning of the industrial revolution and is still used extensively in types of equipment in which a stuffing box seal is required to prevent loss of process fluids to the environment. While advanced sealing solutions for rotary applications, such as mechanical seals, emerged over time, compression remains an important industrial tool.

Built-in lubricants are gradually lost during pump operation, often requiring further gland adjustment. Gland pressure is regulated to provide the optimum lubrication to seal and prevent overheating. Over time, loss of the lubricant and wear of the packing rings contribute to gradual decreased effectiveness, leading to the need to replace the packing. Packing Material

Gland Pressure A compression packing seal is established by installing the packing ring set into the stuffing box (see Figure 1). Then, the gland on the back of the stuffing box is tightened to compress the packing between the shaft and stuffing box wall. Once compressed, the packing expands, exerting a radial force to the sides of the stuffing box and against the shaft. Built-in lubricants are released from the packing as gland pressure is applied. These lubricants are particularly important during equipment startup. Eventually, the process fluid, or an external flushing fluid, takes over the packing’s lubricating function and provides a continuous film of fluid to reduce friction. Heat dissipates through the shaft, packing, pump housing and process fluid.

The choice of packing material affects the operating costs of centrifugal pumps, but little is known about the relationship. The Fluid Sealing Association (FSA) and European Sealing Association (ESA) began to address this lack of data by developing industry standard test methods to shed light on how packing behaves. The acronym “STAMPS” can be used to remember key considerations that can determine which packing material and construction should be selected: Size–What are the stuffing box dimensions? Temperature–What is the temperature of the medium? Application–What type of equipment is it? Media – What medium is being sealed? Pressure–What is the internal pressure being sealed?

Shaft speed – What is the surface speed of the shaft? Compression Packing Failure One common mistake is the tendency to maximize the packing’s time in service to a perceived point of failure before replacing it. Defining failure is more a matter of opinion than science. Signs that the packing has failed include increased leakage, smoke at the stuffing box or uncontrolled leakage at the gland. Safety-conscious operators service the pump and replace the packing at regular intervals. However no common criteria for determining the replacement frequency or relating it to the packing material are available. An acceptable replacement cycle time is heavily dependent on the application, the equipment and the packing. The confusion occurs because of the forgiving nature of compression packing. Pump operation is not impaired until the packing fails. It should be replaced long before this occurs. For any type of packing, operating costs are relatively fixed when it is functioning correctly. As performance deteriorates, operating cost increases are much larger than the initial cost of the packing ring set.

Based on the way packing works, three factors affect costs: 1) Power loss, shaft/sleeve abrasion and material wear caused by friction 2) External flush fluid leak rate from the stuffing box to dissipate heat caused by friction 3) Labour to adjust gland pressure to maintain minimal leak rate from the stuffing box The best practice is to monitor changes at the stuffing box and replace the packing before costs increase. There are many costs, and depending on each application any of these costs could be the most significant. For example, the cost of product loss and product dilution could be much higher than power consumption or flush water losses depending on location and the cost of labour. Signs of Failure After the pump and auxiliary systems

•

have achieved a steady state, measure the temperature at the stuffing box and record the difference from the ambient temperature. For example, if ambient is 65 0 F and the stuffing box is 110 0 F, the operating baseline differential is 45 0 F. Measure the drip rate from the stuffing box in drips per minute and record that as well. Over time, operators will adjust the gland follower to maintain this drip rate. Signs that the packing is failing and needs to be replaced are now easier to identify and can include any of the following: •

•

•

The pump is shut down for maintenance, and the packing shows signs that the material is becoming hard or brittle.

Following these simple steps and replacing the packing can improve performance and save money by avoiding excess loss of power and process fluid. Increased adjustments to the gland and extending of the shaft/sleeve life are no longer needed. â—˜

The baseline drip rate can no longer be controlled through normal gland follower adjustments. The stuffing box/ambient temperature differential increases dramatically relative to the baseline reading taken when the packing was first installed (+25 percent). The packing is extruding from the back of the pump.

hen Newton Tesla sets up new variable speed drives for their customers, they can do configuration, re-programming and monitoring from any location. By connecting a Netbiter gateway to their drives systems, they can offer their customers immediate assistance and do remote commissioning during the critical start-up period.

Newton Tesla drives control and Netbiter

Newton Tesla is one of Britain’s leading experts in variable speed drives and a supplier of advanced automation systems to factories and plants across the world. Specializing in Mitsubishi products, they have been working with drives and inverters since 1987. When commissioning an automation system, it is often hard to solve everything in one go. Usually, there are certain processes you have to wait for or other systems that need to be installed before everything is 100% finished. That means that you often have to go back to the site several times resulting in expensive and time-consuming service trips. Another issue is physical access. George Newton, Managing Director at Newton Tesla and drive system expert explains: “At some

Remote commissioning of a crane

sites, we need special permits or have limited access to our drives. For example, we recently built a system for a silver and platinum processing plant in America. Security was so tight that our mechanical commissioning engineer could not take any tools, mobile phone or even his laptop into the area. This makes on-site commissioning a challenge.” To get access to their drives systems remotely, Newton Tesla had been looking for a remote management system for some time, but no system had quite lived up to their demands. George Newton continues: “I always had the fear that a remote management system would be complex — that it would be hard to establish a connection and, above all, that the connection would be unstable which could really be a problem if you are programming a PLC. But when we found Netbiter, it was surprisingly easy.” How it works When Newton Tesla delivers a new drives system, they connect a Netbiter EC350 gateway to their Mitsubishi PLC which controls the drives. The Netbiter communicates via the cellular network and sends data from the PLC to the cloud-based Netbiter Argos service. By logging into www.netbiter.net, Newton Tesla can see data such as operating frequency, running hours, energy consumption and much more. By using the function called “Remote Access” they can also use the gateway to establish a secure data tunnel to the PLC, through which they can debug, program and commission the drives system. They simply open the tunnel, and can then access their Mitsubishi PLC, just as if they were connected on site.

Connection stability important When programming a PLC, you do not want the connection to go down as it can corrupt your programming and cause the system to malfunction. So naturally, connection stability was a main concern for Newton Tesla. “The Netbiter connection is really robust which is very important for us,” says George Newton. “In fact, I have so much confidence in the connection that I even operate our drives remotely. On a recent project, I moved a crane to a specific position from the office, being confident that the connection wouldn’t be interrupted.”

Industrial Internet of Things: Drives Commissioning from Anywhere

Quick return-on-investment The first time Newton Tesla used Netbiter in a customer project, was when they shipped a system to a customer in Phoenix, Arizona. After the initial set-up on site, they could handle the rest of the commissioning remotely from the office in Warrington, UK. “Naturally, the Netbiter quickly paid for itself on the Arizona project, but the return-on-investment is quick even if the customer only is a few kilometers away,” says George Newton. “If you calculate the costs for a service engineer to get all the gear ready, take the car to a customer and connect everything on site, you quickly realize that even a short service trip is costly.” Nowadays, Newton Tesla always equip their systems with a Netbiter EC350 gateway. Since the Netbiter itself is quite easy to connect, this process can be done by someone who isn’t a PLC programmer, giving the PLC programmer more time to focus on the system itself. “Netbiter has given us the convenience of not having to travel to the site every time we need to adjust a system. It has given our offering an edge since we can spare our customers expensive service trips and offer faster support and commissioning,” finishes George Newton. ◘ For details contact: HMS Industrial Networks India Pvt Ltd “Corporate Plaza”, Unit 1A & 1B Senapati Bapat Road, Nr Chaturshrungi Temple Pune, Maharashtra 411 016 Tel: 020-25630211 Fax: 91-020-25639190 E-mail: in-sales@hms.se

Automated Controller

W

hen Greg and Jaimie Blanchard took ownership of Pro Chem Cleaning Systems, they immediately began modernizing the plant to improve productivity, efficiency and safety. These upgrades included replacing an outdated manual pumping system with an ARO EXP Series air-operated diaphragm pump and closed-loop Controller. Among the outcomes, the plant reduced tank filling time from hours to minutes, fully automated pumping and lowered certain safety risks. Now the company is getting ready to expand production and triple its capacity. For nearly three decades Pro Chem has been producing commercial detergents, degreasers and custom cleaning products for car washes and pressure washers used to remove graffiti and scrub bridges, buildings and sports stadiums. However, outdated processing equipment limited the plant’s performance and profitability. When the new owners took over in 2014 and decided to install new processing equipment and technology, they turned to Ingersoll Rand and its ARO brand for a pumping solution that could meet the high demands of a plant that produces dozens of hazardous and non-hazardous soaps, detergents and degreasers.

Fluid Intelligence to manage multiple products and hazardous substances For a company like Pro Chem that produces cleaning chemicals, success depends on safe and efficient fluid management. The company produces nearly 30 product lines – with names like Pro Chem Pink and Grease Away – and each line involves different formulations with varying properties, viscosities and hazard risks. Production involves blending, batching and packaging the products quickly enough to meet customer demand, while maintaining product quality and avoiding risk of leakage, spillage or worker injury. The facility must also meet strict regulatory compliance and always be prepared for unannounced audits from OSHA or other agencies. Pro Chem produces up to 15,000 gallons of products per week at its 23,000-square foot facility in Arlington, Texas. Making the cleaners involves formulating hundreds of combinations of ingredients, such as solvents, surfactants, thickeners, additives and fragrances. Raw materials are combined in underground blending tanks, which hold 3,000 gallons, pumped into bulk tanks, which can hold up to 18,000 gallons, and then transferred to batch tanks ranging from 55 gallons to 320 gallons. From

there, the product is pumped into large commercial dispensers or into individual packages, like gallon jugs. Prior to the improvements, the plant was relying on a subpar manual pumping system, which made filling tanks time-consuming, inefficient and required constant operator attention. Pro Chem replaced the manual pumping system with a new 1-1/2-inch ARO EXP Series metallic air-operated diaphragm pump and closed-loop controller. The company now has a fully automated system for batching and tank filling. The controller’s remote operating capabilities provide a user-friendly touch-and-go system that allows operators to perform other tasks while the tanks are filling. The owner says this has significantly increased processing productivity. Tank filling goes from hours to minutes “The new setup has cut down our pumping and bottling time tremendously,” says Co-owner Greg Blanchard. In fact, it has reduced the time to pump product from the blending tank to bulk tanks from several hours to less than an hour, and bulk tank to batch from 45 minutes to 13 minutes. “Previously the operators had to eyeball the tanks to see if they were full -now they can set it to 55 gallons, for example, and it dispenses just the right amount into the tank,” says Blanchard. The new pumping system also controls the pressure, increasing efficiency and diminishing foaming, which was a problem in the old system. The plant’s operators agree that the Controller’s remote feature increases their ability to do more tasks in the day and reduces the tedium of having to stand and watch the tanks fill to make sure nothing goes wrong. If the controller senses a problem in pressure or process, it sounds an alarm.

New ARO automated Controller

Improvements also include wider piping and a manifold connected to the pumping system, enabling easy flow management between multiple tanks. ARO experts worked closely with Pro Chem to configure and install just the right pump and control system to meet the company’s needs. The new setup, with smoother pumping and wider piping, also prevents foaming, which was problematic with the old equipment.

ARO Electronic Interface Pumps customized control without the cost

In addition to the ARO controller’s alert system, safety features include the ARO pump’s leak-free fluid handling. Also, with automated pumping, operators do not have to keep traveling back and forth to check the tanks as they did with the manual pumping system, reducing the risk of tripping or falling.

The ARO Electronic Interface Diaphragm Pump provides all the benefits of an airoperated pump with the controllability of an electric pump. All ARO EXP Series electronic interface pumps seamlessly integrate with the ARO automated controller.

Other benefits of the ARO pump include that it is available in materials that handle a range of fluids, including some caustic

ARO air-diaphragm pump and controller.

Safety, leak prevention and no-stall operation Safety is a priority for Pro Chem, as with any chemical manufacturer. “If there were a leak or spill of hazardous materials, that could pose a major risk to the people working here,” says Blanchard. “We

chemicals, and engineered to hold up under the rigor or chemical applications. It also has a patented “unbalanced” air valve for reliable no-stall operation. As Pro Chem embarks on expanding production, with a goal of tripling capacity, Blanchard plans to apply the same new technologies that are working so well in the existing plant now. “We’re extremely pleased with the results,” he says. “And we’re prepared to grow significantly in the coming years.”

The Present and Future of Thermal Insulation Coatings

W

hen nanotechnology-based thermal insulation coatings (TICs) first were developed by innovator, Industrial Nanotech, Inc in 2004, factory plant and facility managers did not yet know what a big impact they would have on sustainability, energy efficiency and corrosion prevention. This patented line of coatings, under the brand names Nansulate and Heat Shield, have been on the market for over 11 years and offer a new way to insulate, by painting on layers of a coating, while at the same time preventing corrosion and resisting moisture and dust infiltration. The coatings are based upon nanoscience and use a coating system as the ‘carrier’ or ‘glue’ for a nanomaterial that has extremely low thermal conductivity and is moisture repellent. Multiple companies from around the world have used TICs to solve issues they have with insulating pipes, tanks, equipment and buildings. The coatings are used across many different manufacturing sectors, such as, chemical and petrochemical, pulp and paper, food and beverage, oil and gas, and more. Their unique combination of characteristics, which include insulation, surface temperature reduction, corrosion and chemical resistance, and the ability to stand up to moist and harsh environments without degrading make them an important choice for long-term cost savings. They typically last 5-10 years, with consistent performance, where, depending upon the environment, fiberglass and rock wool tend to degrade much faster and need replacement sooner.

While some companies are new to this 21 st Century technology and have yet to fully understand the benefits, there are others who are already exploring the future of how this material could solve other critical issues in their industry. By

Elasteks Chart

exploring the case studies below it should help give a better understanding TICs both in present use and what innovative manufacturers are envisioning for the future of this technology. PRESENT: Case Study: Elasteks Textile Manufacturer, Dyeing Machines & Equipment Elasteks is a textile manufacturer of a variety of yarns used in garments. A few years ago, they were looking for a way to lower energy costs and worked with Industrial Nanotech distributor, Kolorgen Ltd, to insulate their yarn dyeing machines, condensate water tank, and steam and condensate pipes with Industrial Nanotech’s High Heat and EPX4 coatings. Following application and cure time, they used a hot water meter to measure condensed steam to gauge the energy use, and their data showed a reduction in energy consumption of 51% after insulating with the technology.

The steam consumption in kilograms per dyeing process cycle was measured over a period of 3 months, comparing before and after application consumption: Before the insulation coatings: 1,326 kg steam consumption per process cycle After the insulation coatings: 651 kg steam consumption per process cycle A savings of 675 kg steam consumption per process cycle. The TICs also stood up well without degrading in the factory environment. Case Study: US Hospital System, Steam Pipes A large US Hospital recently did an initial trial with the High Heat TIC. It was used for steam pipe insulation, replacing the foam wrap that had previously been used but that was very thick. The coating gave the ability to insulate in a much thinner, more durable, and moisture resistant layer. The application used an 8-coat coverage, which is approximately 8/1000 ths of an inch

Seshasayee Paper and Boards explains, “Cold-end corrosion of all flue gas air preheaters of boilers is inevitable. Invariably these tubes have to be replaced on a regular basis causing air ingress and boiler downtime and hence nonavailability of the same. We propose that the flue gas air preheater unit shall be divided into 2 sections –large and small. The large section would be conventional type in that flue gas flows through tube interior whereas combustion air flows outside across the air heater tubes. The small section shall be designed with air going inside and flue gas across the tubes. The tube exterior shall be coated with the Nansulate TIC so as to protect the tube surface from corrosion. The benefits would be that cold end corrosion of APH tubes is avoided. Boiler availability is hence increased, thereby resulting in increased plant productivity.” Industrial Nanotech is working with Seshasayee Paper to explore this application which would be an important one for this industry and others. This comparison savings was further extrapolated using the US EPA’s carbon greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equivalency calculator, and for every 93 m 2 (1,000 SF) of steam pipe surface area insulated with the TIC, it equated to a reduction of 162 Metric Tonnes of GHG emissions, and was the equivalent of carbon sequestered by 4,141 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.

new technologies to benefit cost and energy saving activities in their pulp and paper factories. An early application of the coatings at one of their facilities was to solve insulation issues over dryer end covers, lowering the surface temperature and insulating without interfering with the machine process. Their pioneering efforts to seek out new energy efficient technologies brought them two awards within the past year for energy conservation from BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) in India and the Indian Paper Manufacturers' Association.

Seshasayee Paper & Boards Innovations for Insulation and Corrosion Control

They continue to explore new innovative concepts with the Industrial Nanotech Coatings, the latest is exploring how the coatings can benefit cold-end corrosion in the air preheater of power boilers.

FUTURE:

The pace of change and innovation this Century is happening at lightning speed for computers, smartphones and communications, and it is no different for the world of coatings, nanotechnology and energy efficiency. If facility and plant managers are looking to solve a difficult insulation or surface protection issue to which there is currently no good solution, they can challenge innovative companies like Industrial Nanotech to come up with a solution — and in doing so they help not only their own facilities, but their industry as a whole and help to evolve TICs to the ◘ next level. WIPED FILM EVAPORATOR

WFE has several advantages: the operation is continuous with a single pass; the self-cleaning continuous contact wipers produce and renew the thin film. Such an operation improves product yield, avoids residue and colour formation. It has an internal condenser (optional) that minimizes the pressure drop and maintains vacuum. Feed is introduced at the top of the unit and spread on the shell inner surface by the rotating distribution plate. Specially designed wipers wipe the feed thus creating and renewing the film. This thin film enables an efficient heat transfer even for highly viscous fluids. The low boiling component evaporates and passes through an entrainment separator. This minimizes the carryover of liquid droplets along with the vapours. The vapours are removed through the vapour line to an external condenser (optional) and condensed. For specific applications which demand low pressure drop, the central section of the evaporator is provided with a condenser, thus making the unit a short path/molecular distillation unit. In this case, the vapours are allowed to condense on the outside of the tube bundle and flow out of the vaporator via the condensate outlet provided at the centre. The high boiling component flows along the shell wall and is discharged from the product outlet. Wiper action is important in promoting downward flow. The product/concentrate should be in fluid form at the operating temperature. Different designs of rotors are available depending upon the product, its viscosity and the process pressure. SCRAPPER MECHANISM FILTERS Scrapper mechanism self-cleaning filters are widely used for continuous filtration requirement without any replacement of filter consumables and without exposure of operators. Like auto backwash filter, scrapper mechanism self-cleaning is used for preliminary filtration following the same principle of differential pressure; the only difference is that it is used for applications where back washing medium is not available. Scrapper mechanism self-cleaning filter is used wherein one cannot introduce any additional substance for back washing. The filtration process becomes smooth because of automatic continuous on-line filtration. The gear motor runs against the spring actuated scraper and the concentrated solids are drained off by the system, thereby keeping the function of the cartridge well. PLC control function means differential pressure cleaning, scheduling of cleaning process and manual cleaning. The differential-pressure is an important parameter for operation and can be connected with the central control room. Validated by practice, this filtration process is highly effective and using the wedge cartridge, it can be easily cleaned with less abrasion. In many fields, this filter can replace the traditional filters like sand filters, filter press, etc.

FALLING FILM EVAPORATOR

MIXERS

A falling film evaporator is used for concentration and evaporation of relatively low viscosity liquids. Steam, hot water or hot oil is used as the heating media and the process is carried out under atmospheric or vacuum condition. The evaporator is used for volume reduction where dilute products are concentrated to a medium concentration. The process is continuous. The liquid to be concentrated is fed from the top and a distributor ensures proper feed distribution in each of the tubes. The distributor also ensures that all tubes are wetted and that the liquid flows in a film. The liquid and vapour both travel vertically downward. Due to a relatively thin film, the heat transfer coefficient is better than that obtained in reactors and simple shell and tube evaporators. If further concentration is required, the concentrated product can then be fed to the WFE.

Toshniwal mixer is a new generation powder mixing equipment that helps to meet the customers’ modern times demand such as reduced source and achieve excellency in quality improvement; low power consumption - higher yield and short time operation with reduced maintenance cost.

CARTRIDGE FILTER SYSTEMS

FILTERS & STRAINERS

Cartridge filter system offers wide range of flow capacities and contaminant holding capacities. Cartridge filter housing diameters can accommodate around 1 to 500 cartridges. Cartridge filters are normally used as polishing filter in almost all process industries. Cartridge filter is constructed of filter housing, filter cartridges, tube sheet, positive sealing arrangement for cartridge depending upon type of cartridge and choice of end connections. Positive sealing arrangement for cartridge filter assures no particle migration or fiber migration, even after high differential pressures.

Cipriani Harrison’s filters and strainers made from SS-304 and SS-316 are highly polished and come standard with FDA silicone seals. These filters and strainers consist of a housing with an inlet and outlet either inline or 90o angle orientation. Inside the housing is the straining element that is fixed in such a way that the product flow is forced through it. This element consists of a backup tube and straining mesh. The housing with the element assembly inside it is then fitted between two stainless steel flanges by means of sanitary clamps and gaskets. These filters/strainers are 3A authorised.

TURBINE OIL FILTRATION PLANT

Ultra-filtration treatment (UF) is a pressure-driven barrier to suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, endotoxins and other pathogens to produce water with very high purity and low silt density. Typically, ultra-filtration will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials, silt (SDI), and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules. It serves as a pretreatment for surface water, seawater and biologically treated municipal effluent before reverse osmosis and other membrane systems. Brisanzia Ultrafiltration is a separation process using membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.001 micron. Unistar offers ultra-filtration systems that are extremely effective for treating heavy surface water. Ultra-filtration treated water can be sent for reverse osmosis and recycled or further taken for portable application. With ultra-filtration, costly and unreliable methods of water waste pre-treatment before reverse osmosis is not required.

FILTRATION SYSTEM

FILTRATION PLANT

Filtration is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass. The fluid that passes through is called the filtrate. Oversize solids in the fluid are retained, but the separation is not complete; solids will be contaminated with some fluid and filtrate will contain fine particles (depending on the pore size and filter thickness). Filtration is used to separate particles and fluid in a suspension, where the fluid can be a liquid, a gas or a supercritical fluid. Depending on the application, either one or both of the components may be isolated.

Yash Filters offers wide range of filtration plant using high quality raw materials as per the customer’s requirements. While manufacturing each and every product they maintain quality standards, which are highly demanded.

Filtration as a physical operation is important in chemistry for the separation of materials of different chemical composition. A solvent is chosen which dissolves one component, while not dissolving the other. By dissolving the mixture in the chosen solvent, one component will go into the solution and pass through the filter, while the other will be retained. This is one of the most important techniques used by chemists to purify compounds. Filtration is also important and widely used as one of the unit operations of chemical engineering. It may be simultaneously combined with other unit operations to process the feed stream, as in the biofilter, which is a combined filter and biological digestion device. EFFLUENT EVAPORATORS

NANO-FILTRATION SYSTEM

Effluent evaporators due to the ascending force of the vapour bubbles, which are produced during boiling, the liquid and vapours flow upwards in a parallel flow. Simultaneously the vapour quantity also increase thereby forming a climbing film on the walls of a tube. Due to this there is a high turbulence in the liquid and these evaporators are advantageous for heat sensitive, highly viscous and moderately scaling liquids.

Nano-filtration is a technique, which is used most often with low total dissolved solids water such as surface water and fresh groundwater. Divalent and larger ions are generally targeted to be removed by Nano-filtration. Monovalent ions pass through Nano-filtration membrane so it is widely used for desalting application. Removing hardness and dissolved organics from water, arsenic removal from drinking water, heavy metal ions recovery from electroplating waste water and separation of pharma from fermentation broths are some of the examples of industrial applications of nano-filtration. NF has properties that lie between ultra-filtration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) with pore size of 0.01-0.001 μm. Since all NF membranes have their origins in RO membranes, they are called loose reverse osmosis membranes or tight ultrafiltration membranes with respect to its permeate flux and separation performance.

BED MIST ELIMINATORS

ENERGY STORAGE

Fibre Bed Mist Eliminators are used to provide the highest possible collection efficiency for process conditions requiring stringent performance levels. The Everfibre Bed Mist Eliminator is manufactured under license from Begg Cousland & Co Ltd, UK. The unit consists of fibres packed between a pair of concentric screens. Both screens are made of suitable corrosion resistant materials. Type, orientation, fibre bed depth and packing density are tailored to the needs of specific applications.

The energy storage market is constantly looking to increase capacity for applications such as electric vehicles. Ashland addresses this need with its new Soteras MSi binder. The new anode binder is based on breakthrough technology specifically for use with silicon to increase the capacity of lithium-ion batteries by as much as 30 per cent. This step-change in battery capacity could prove significant for cell developers supplying the electric vehicle market. Soteras MSi binder is a unique water-based binder that can easily be processed using standard industry practices. Soteras MSi binder controls swelling, resulting in superior cycle performance at capacities greater than 400 mAh/g when used with silicon oxide (SiO), silicon composite (SiC), silicon oxide composite (SiOC), or silicon graphene (Si-Gr) technologies.

Coarse mist particles are removed by impaction and direct interception. Finer particles are whisked away through Brownian diffusion. These particles coalesce into a liquid film which is forced by gas flow downstream of the fibre bed. The liquid then flows by gravity into the drain. The Everfibre Bed Mist Eliminator is designed to rid air/gases of emissions which could harm human and plant life, affect downstream equipment and cause plume opacity. It finds wide application in the field of sulphuric acid, sulphonation plants, chlorine plants, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plants and compressed gas applications. AMETEK Drexelbrook offers density compensation module (DCM) for its Universal IV InLine Water Cut Monitor (CM). The module automatically compensates for density changes that may occur in the composition of products and reduces the calibration requirements due to those changes. The Universal IV CM is designed for high-accuracy water in oil measurement. The DCM allows the Universal IV CM to maintain its stated accuracy with variations in density up to 10 API, ensuring measurement accuracy from load to load regardless of changes in product composition.

General Products

DENSITY COMPENSATION MODULE

The Universal IV utilizes an electrical measurement (capacitance) and correlates that to water cut (% of oil in water). Those measurements can be affected by changes in density. Density compensation is done to correct for changes in electrical properties that may impact output measurement and is particularly suitable for midstream refinery and oil pipeline operators. Along with the optional DCM, the Universal IV CM features an in-line probe design that allows it to analyze a large representative sample of flowing fluid in real time. Its sensing element extends into the main process line, taking an average of the capacitive property of the fluid over its entire length. The monitor’s onboard electronics then computes the relationship between capacitance change and water cut. The Universal IV CM also offers the industry’s highest pressure and temp capabilities (1,500 PSI and temp up to 450 oF) as well as field-proven Cote-Shield technology, which ignores coating build-up on the probe. In addition, a temp-compensation (TC) version is available that measures product temp internally and calculates a true water cut reading at any temp as long as the water is in liquid state (eg, 32 to 212 oF at ambient pressure). Applications for the Universal IV CM include automatic well testing (AWT), lease automatic custody transfer (LACT), basic sediment and water (BS&W), separation vessels, pipeline slug detection, truck unloading, pipe protection, dielectric analysis and machinery lube oil monitoring.

DISK PACK COUPLINGS The high performance and robust ROBA-DS disk pack couplings by mayr power transmission are especially suited for operations in extreme environmental conditions at sea. The type approval by the DNV GL confirms the high quality and reliability of the couplings and ensures max possible operating safety on the high seas. The nominal torques stated in the catalogue can be utilised without any limitations using the ROBA-DS disk pack coupling. A reduction of the nominal torque due to misalignment, overall load configuration or balancing requirements is not necessary. The couplings are compact and feature a high performance density and small dimensions – ideal for ship engines, in which only little installation space is available. In case of providers who have to take misalignments and alternating torques into consideration when dimensioning, a larger coupling frequently has to be selected for the same nominal torque and also the same speed. The ROBA-DS disk pack couplings transmit torques up to the nominal torque absolutely backlash-free and with a consistently high torsional rigidity. The shaft misalignments stated can be utilised to 100 per cent without influencing the transmitted torque. The disk pack couplings compensate radial, axial and angular misalignment of shafts, and as a result protect the bearings against undesired loads, and therefore against unnecessary downtimes and costs. Converting Solar Energy into Fuel Villigen, Switzerland: Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI and the ETH Zurich have collaborated to develop a ground-breaking alternative to this approach. The new procedure uses the sun's Caption: Ivo Alxneit, chemist at the Solar thermal energy to convert carbon Technology Laboratory, Paul Scherrer Institute dioxide and water directly into (PSI), preps for an experiment synthetic fuel. "This allows solar energy to be stored in the form of chemical bonds," explains Ivo Alxneit, chemist at the PSI's Solar Technology Laboratory. "It's easier than storing electricity." The new approach is based on a similar principle to that used by solar power plants." Alxneit and his colleagues use heat in order to trigger certain chemical processes that only take place at very high temperatures above 100 0 C.

Engineering Researchers Strive to Create Third-generation Solar Cells GA, USA: Sandip Das, Assistant Professor of Electrical

E n g i n e e r i n g i n t h e S o u t h e r n Po l y t e c h n i c C o l l e g e o f Engineering and Engineering Technology, along with a team of three undergraduate research assistants, has recently fabricated the delicate solar cells, which are about 100 times thinner than a human hair. The future of solar power generation is in these flexible solar cells, Das said. He and his research team are investigating various nano-materials to fabricate the third-generation solar cells. The researchers hope to develop a superior photovoltaic technology that produces cheaper and more efficient solar cells. "The most fascinating part of doing this research is the enormous potential that this new technology offers, such as integrating flexible solar cells on wearable electronics, backpacks and self-charging cell phones and electricity-generating layers on windows, especially on skyscrapers, and solar power's ability to supply a large amount of clean, renewable and cheap energy for the future," said David Danilchuk, an Electrical Engineering major who is an undergraduate Research Assistant on the project. Technology News Scientists Unlock 'Green' Energy from Garden Grass London, UK: A team of UK researchers, including experts from Cardiff University's Cardiff Catalysis Institute, have shown that significant amounts of hydrogen can be unlocked from fescue grass with the help of sunlight and a cheap catalyst. It is the first time that this method has been demonstrated and could potentially lead to a sustainable way of producing hydrogen, which has enormous potential in the renewable energy industry due to its high energy content and the fact that it does not release toxic or greenhouse gases when it is burnt. Co-author of the study Professor Michael Bowker, from the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, said, "This really is a green source of energy.

"Hydrogen is seen as an important future energy carrier as the world moves from fossil fuels to renewable feedstocks, and our research has shown that even garden grass could be a good way of getting hold of it." The team, which also includes researchers from Queen's University Belfast, have published their findings in the Royal Society journal Proceedings A. Hydrogen is contained in enormous quantities all over in the world in water, hydrocarbons and other organic matter. Up until now, the challenge for researchers has been devising ways of unlocking hydrogen from these sources in a cheap, efficient and sustainable way. A promising source of hydrogen is the organic compound cellulose, which is a key component of plants and the most abundant biopolymer on Earth. In their study, the team investigated the possibility of converting cellulose into hydrogen using sunlight and a simple catalyst -- a substance which speeds up a chemical reaction without getting used up.
