The Evolution of the Species CosmoDryÂŽ System: horizontal paddle vacuum dryer with concentric agitator, fitted with a shaft dismountable in sections, for a maximum ease of cleaning and inspection.

M

CosmoDry System is safe for the product and the operators, because it is designed and manufactured in compliance with the increasingly strict safety standards and according to cGMP and ATEX regulations.

aximum ease of cleaning, maintenance and internal inspection: a mix of qualities that make CosmoDry System the ideal solution even for multi-product applications. CosmoDry System is the innovative horizontal paddle vacuum dryer created by Italvacuum international manufacturer of vacuum dryers and vacuum pumps - as the result of a deep analysis, conducted in co-operation with the most demanding customers, regarding the most urgent requirements of their production. Power, loading flexibility, drying speed, ease of unloading, maximum product quality, these are all fundamental values. But Italvacuum went further, in order to facilitate cleaning and internal inspection. A quality that allows to maintain over time the machine’s perfect efficiency and to optimize the production processes. CosmoDry System is based on an operating philosophy conceived for the drying of wet powders coming from filtration or centrifugation stages and it is suitable for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), fine chemical and intermediates.

Constructive Details For the parts that are in contact with the product CosmoDry System is built in AISI 316L stainless steel, but other weldable materials are also available if requested by customers, for instance ALLOY C-22 and AISI 904L.

thus allowing the treatment of thermosensitive products. But that is not all. Its special features allow to reduce product deposition at a minimum, providing an easy and efficient unloading operation, for which a dedicated operative cycle has been introduced. Finally, a value that has always been a milestone for Italvacuum: safety.

The walls of the drying chamber, the port lid and the agitator shaft are heated through diathermic liquid circulation. Internal surfaces are mirror-polished or electro-polished in order to optimize resistance to corrosion, reduce friction on the product and simplify cleaning operations. The agitator shaft is equipped with a double mechanical seal system, conceived to guarantee perfect vacuum tightness and absolute purity of the dried batch, avoiding any risk of product contamination. The

CosmoDry System consists of a horizontal cylindrical chamber, equipped with a concentric agitator, fitted with an heated shaft dismountable in sections: this is the great added value of the CosmoDry System, setting it apart from conventional paddle vacuum dryers. The peculiar configuration of the agitator enables continuous stirring of the product and facilitates its thermal exchange, reducing drying time. Moreover, it was designed to limit mechanical and thermal stresses,

he growing scarcity of fresh water due to rise in domestic water demands and a changing climate is increasingly seen as a major challenge for the industry. Consumer awareness, private sector initiatives, governmental regulations and targeted investments are urgently needed to move towards sustainable water use. Looking at scarcity of water and the benefits of having zero liquid discharge (ZLD); the government has made it compulsory for every industry to have ZLD. Raj Process Equipment and Systems Pvt Ltd has employed the advanced zero liquid discharge (ZLD) treatment technologies to purify and recycle all of the waste water produced by the industry. It is only the solids that need to be discharged out of the industrial premises. Also, Raj Process have separated out particular salt like sodium chloride from waste water by using MEE and the client is using salt back into the process. ZLD technology includes pre-treatment, ie, effluent treatment plant (ETP) followed by either reverse osmosis (RO) where reject will be

Multiple effect evaporator (MEE).

treated into multiple effect evaporator (MEE) or differently to MEE depending on the characteristics of waste water. To prevent fouling during the reverse osmosis process, ultra-filtration is

often used to eliminate suspended solids. The multiple effect evaporator (MEE) concentrate the industrial effluent until the dissolved solids precipitate as crystals. These crystals are removed and dewatered by using ATFD or any kind of centrifuge. The water vapours from evaporation are condensed and recycled back after proper treatment. In the case of distillery effluent, we have references where we are burning solids from multiple effect evaporator followed by dryer in ordinary boiler with bio-mass and the complete water is recycled back after proper treatment.

Clear condensate from multiple effect evaporator

Normally, the steam is an available heat source for the MEE. Raj Process has successfully used other forms of energy available like turbine exhaust, flue gases, hot water, etc.

Raj Process has supplied more than 200 ZLD plants in the last two decades to various industries in more than 10 different countries. Raj Process have an experienced team of engineers in process, purchase, execution team who are able to take care of any requisite needs of ZLD. Due to dedicated R&D unit, well equipped factories and experienced team of engineers, the company is able to deliver the plant on time as well as able to give good after sales service. U

niversity of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia, chemists have invented a new, cheap catalyst for splitting water with an electrical current to efficiently produce clean hydrogen fuel.

Marketing Initiative

New Ultrathin Material for Splitting Water Could Make Hydrogen Production Cheaper

The technology is based on the creation of ultrathin slices of porous metal-organic complex materials coated onto a foam electrode, which the researchers have unexpectedly shown is highly conductive of electricity and active for splitting water. “Splitting water usually requires two different catalysts, but our catalyst can drive both of the reactions required to separate water into its two constituents, oxygen and hydrogen,” says study leader Associate Professor Chuan Zhao. “Our fabrication method is simple and universal, so we can adapt it to produce ultrathin nanosheet arrays of a variety of these materials, called metal-organic frameworks. “Compared to other water-splitting electrocatalysts reported to date, our catalyst is also among the most efficient,” he says. The research by Zhao, Dr Sheng Chen and Dr Jingjing Duan is published in the journal Nature Communications. The water splitting technologies developed by Associate Professor Zhao and his team are one of the foundation projects for the UNSW-China Torch Initiative and the Torch Innovation Precinct at UNSW, unveiled by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Prime Minister Kequiang Li in April 2016. Zhao was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship, with a grant of $960,000 to develop ionic liquid-based nanoporous composite catalysts for the efficient electro-chemical reduction of carbon-dioxide into valueadded chemicals and fuels. Hydrogen is a very good carrier for renewable energy because it is abundant, generates zero emissions and is much easier to store

than other energy sources, like solar or wind energy.

solves the big problems of conductivity, and access to active sites,” says Zhao.

But the cost of producing it by using electricity to split water is high, because the most efficient catalysts developed so far are often made with precious metals, like platinum, ruthenium and iridium.

“It is ground-breaking. We were able to demonstrate that metal-organic frameworks can be highly conductive, challenging the common concept of these materials as inert electro-catalysts.”

The catalysts developed at UNSW are made of abundant, non-precious metals like nickel, iron and copper. They belong to a family of versatile porous materials called metal organic frameworks, which have a wide variety of other potential applications.

Metal-organic frameworks have the potential for a large range of applications, including fuel storage, drug delivery and carbon capture. The UNSW team’s demonstration that they can also be highly conductive introduces a host of new applications for this class of material beyond electro-catalysis. ◘

Until now, metal-organic frameworks were considered poor conductors and not very useful for electrochemical reactions. Conventionally, they are made in the form of bulk powders, with their catalytic sites deeply embedded inside the pores of the material, where it is difficult for the water to reach. By creating nanometre-thick arrays of metalorganic frameworks, Zhao’s team was able to expose the pores and increase the surface area for electrical contact with the water. “With nanoengineering, we made a unique metal-organic framework structure that

Practicing Perfection Ofichem Group BV, one of the world’s leading developers, manufacturers and distributors of APIs, meets good manufacturing practice (GMP) guidelines with Almatec AODD pumps

T

he story of Lab Ofichem is an interesting example of how the movements of a highly regulated market can change the face of a company. Originally founded as Laboratorium Oldenziel Fine Chemicals in 1975 by Dr O H Oldenziel and his wife, H H OldenzielMeursing, Lab Ofichem established itself as a successful family-operated developer, manufacturer and distributor of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for use in the global human and veterinary-medicine markets over the next few decades. That began to change in the late 1990s when Europe and North America began mandating to incorporate Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in their operations, meaning they had to define how and under what conditions a product was manufactured. While an admirable goal, the required use of GMPs had unintended consequences for many API manufacturers, namely higher production and equipment costs that enabled India and China - which were not subject to

the mandates of GMPs - to intrude on the global APIs market more and more. So, in 2006, Dr Oldenziel made the decision to introduce the GMP guidelines into Ofichem’s API-manufacturing operations. Dr Oldenziel did not get a chance to see the full blossoming of his vision, as he passed away in December 2006, but his legacy of innovation at Lab Ofichem, now part of a larger umbrella company (along with other subsidiaries Ofipharma and Indopharm) known as the Ofichem Group BV, continues in both execution and name, as his and H H’s son, Weite Oldenziel, is now General Director of the Ofichem Group. “In combining the knowledge of Lab Ofichem with the network of Ofichem BV. and Indopharm we can help our customers more specifically with their questions and problems,” said Oldenziel. “We can also produce and analyze APIs, and have the facilities to be able to store a large amount of APIs in our own warehouse. In short, we have laid the foundation for a company that is ready for the future.”

That future already includes a global reach, with the Ofichem Group operating satellite sales offices in Barcelona, Spain; Hamburg, Germany; and Paris, France, while it also has two purchasing and auditing offices in China, where a lot of the company’s product research and development is performed. Diversify and Conquer Unlike many API producers that choose to focus their manufacturing efforts on a small number of specific types and categories of APIs, Ofichem develops a wide range of APIs for use in the creation of human and veterinary drugs and medicines, for example: • Sulphonamides: Antibiotics that slow down the growth of bacteria in animals and humans • Cytostatics: Used in Cytostatic chemotherapy treatments for cancer patients • Fumarates: Used in the treatment of skin diseases like psoriasis

Remco Vree Egberts, R&D Manager and Project Leader (right), and Wim Ekkelkamp, Technical Manager (left), at Ofichem Group BV’s Lab Ofichem API-manufacturing facility have chosen the Almatec E-Series air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump (inset) because of its ATEX Certification for handling dangerous materials and leak-free operation.

“We have a lab that analyzes every product that we produce,” said Egberts. “In that lab there are different sections, a wet section and a dry section, with specific equipment in each.”

Remco Vree Egberts, R&D Manager and Project Leader for the Ofichem Group. “We have our products that we produce all year long and sell to the market, but we also have the capability to produce customerspecific products, which are only produced when the customer orders them.”

Ofichem’s API production takes place in three production areas ranging from smallto large-scale facilities. In the large-scale production area, for example, as many as 500 kgs (1,100 pounds) of solvents, acids or powders will be transferred in a single day, with various liquids also used to facilitate any number of chemical reactions. One of the most dangerous chemicals Ofichem handles is hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive and must be handled with extreme care. To that end, because of the toxic, corrosive and dangerous nature of many of the raw materials that Ofichem uses, safety for both site personnel and the environment is an overriding day-today concern.

While Ofichem may produce a vast array of APIs, they all have one thing in common: they must be manufactured to exacting standards. To ensure the quality of any produced API, various methods of quality-assurance analysis - high liquid

“If you look at safety issues, our highly toxic products are kept in special areas, things like carcinogenics that cause cancer,” said Egberts. “Also, if there happens to be a fire, we mandate that the area should be enclosed for at least 60 minutes.”

In nearly 40 years of operation, the Ofichem Group BV. and its Lab Ofichem facility in The Netherlands has grown into one of the world’s leading producers of APIs for human and veterinary-medicine use.

• Biofosfonates: Inhibit the degradation of bone tissue and are used to combat various skeletal disorders • Levasimole/Piperazine: Used in the veterinary world to destroy parasitic worms • Histamines: Used to test for allergic reactions “A lot of companies are specialized in a certain product range, but we are one of the companies that have a large product range; we do about 50 products,” explained

performance chromatography (HLPC) and gas chromatography are two examples— are performed to see if any impurities have made their way into the final API.

The explosive, flammable, corrosive, toxic and hazardous nature of many of the liquids used in API production requires extreme handling precautions. Leak-free, ATEX-Certified Almatec AODD pumps help ensure that the highest levels of safety are met.

Marketing Initiative The safe, reliable performance of the Almatec CX Series AODD pump has helped put smiles on the faces of Ofichem’s Wim Ekkelkamp (Left), and Gerrit Klaassen of Holland Air Pumps.

Pumping Perfection Handling corrosive, toxic and flammable materials is a fact of daily life at the Lab Ofichem facility, which is why it is critically important that the correct type of pump be identified and incorporated into the production process. Wim Ekkelkamp is Ofichem’s Technical Manager and the man responsible for purchasing the pumps that are used in the Lab Ofichem production facility. “We have to keep production moving, we have to keep downtime as low as possible, and we have to be safe, so when we are purchasing any new equipment, the quality is very important,” he said. In 2007, Ofichem was looking to upgrade the pumping equipment at the lab and reached out to Gerrit Klaassen, Commercial Director of Holland Air Pumps, Oirschot, The Netherlands, for some recommendations. “For me, it was obvious that Ofichem needed a safe pump in this environment, one that has no leakage,” said Klaassen. “A plastic pump that is easily cleaned and has no corroding parts, that would be ideal for the application.” As it happens, Holland Air Pumps is a distributor of air-operated doublediaphragm (AODD) pumps from Almatec, Kamp-Lintfort, Germany, which is a product brand of PSG, a Dover company,

Oakbrook Terrace, IL, USA. In analyzing Ofichem’s API-production setup, Klaassen determined that the Almatec E-Series and CX Series AODD Pumps would be the ideal solutions. E-Series and CX Series pumps are made of solid-block PE conductive and rated for use in explosion-protected areas as they meet the ATEX requirements of European Directive 94/9/EG regarding the use of equipment or systems in potentially explosive atmospheres. In terms of operation, these pumps are self-priming and dry-run capable, and possess the ability to empty containers completely. Air consumption and operating cost are optimized through the incorporation of the patented, maintenance-free PERSWING P air-control system. “Ofichem chose these pumps because they are reliable, they are very easy to clean, both on the outside and the inside, they are ATEXCertified, which is very important in our production areas, and they have very quiet operation; these are the reasons why we use the Almatec pumps,” said Ekkelkamp. “The thing is, quality is also important, because if you buy a cheaper pump but have downtime of one month every year, then the pump is not cheaper,” added Egberts. “With these pumps we have very low downtime and that’s the most important for us because if our production time is down one day we will lose at least

€7,425 ($ 8,723.). That’s why we choose pumps based on quality, not price.” Conclusion When the Ofichem Group - for almost 40 years a global leader in the critical industry of API production - decided that the time had come to introduce Good Manufacturing Practices to its API-production operation, it knew that this meant that each and every aspect of production would have to operate at the highest level of efficiency and safety. So choosing the proper pump technology became a top-of-mind concern for Ofichem’s daily handing of many different types of hazardous, toxic, flammable and corrosive chemicals. Any concerns have been assuaged through the incorporation of Almatec AODD Pump technology in its chemical-handling applications. “It’s very important that our pumps don’t break, that they have solid-block construction and that they don’t have any corrosion,” said Egberts. “If there is any corrosion in the pump, I can’t use it anymore. We chose the Almatec pumps because they are capable of handling the products we are using. It’s a personal-safety issue - you don’t want any leaks, you don’t want people getting products on them. It’s also a productsafety issue, which in our business is very important. We have been using

FALLING FILM EVAPORATOR

FLUID BED DRYERS/COOLERS

A falling film evaporator is used for concentration and evaporation of relatively low viscosity liquids. Steam, hot water or hot oil is used as the heating media and the process is carried out under atmospheric or vacuum condition. The evaporator is used for volume reduction where dilute products are concentrated to a medium concentration. The process is continuous. The liquid to be concentrated is fed from the top and a distributor ensures proper feed distribution in each of the tubes. The distributor also ensures that all tubes are wetted and that the liquid flows in a film. The liquid and vapour both travel vertically downward. Due to a relatively thin film, the heat transfer coefficient is better than that obtained in reactors and simple shell and tube evaporators. If further concentation is required, the concentrated product can then be fed to the WFE.

Fluid bed dryers/coolers are widely used in the industry for gentle drying/cooling of free-flowing solids. In fluid bed systems, the material is fluidised with the help of air stream using specially designed perforated plate. In addition to this, the fluidiser can also be made vibratory to assist the fluidisation by imparting mechanical energy. Drying/cooling media (air/gas) area admitted in the plenum below the perforated plate. Fluidised state enables intensive interaction of the material and drying/ cooling media (air/gas), hence high rates of heat transfer are achieved. Product residence time can be adjusted through adjustable discharge weir. Product drying and cooling is possible in single unit. AVM offers customised fluid bed drying systems with variety of configurations.

WIPED FILM EVAPORATOR Wiped film evaporator (WFE) is used for evaporation/concentration of heat sensitive liquids and slurries under vacuum conditions. It employs thin film technology which yields high heat transfer coefficients making the process highly effective. Due to a short residence time, higher jacket temperatures are possible without thermal degradation. The evaporator is used for concentration, distilling, stripping, dehydration and deodorisation of products which are heat sensitive or viscous. The equipment can handle a very wide range of feed compositions ranging from 1% to over 95% concentration. WFE has several advantages. The operation is continuous with a single pass, the self-cleaning continuous contact wipers produce and renew the thin film. Such an operation improves product yield, avoids residue and colour formation. It has an internal condenser (optional) that minimises the pressure drop and maintains vacuum.

MULTI MILL

MILLING

Multi mill relies on impact in air. Material is dropped axially from a feed hopper into the comminuting chamber where it comes in contact with blades rotating at high speed. Differentially edged (flat and knife) blades in desired direction of rotation achieve shear. Material entering the chamber is imparted to the periphery and passes through the circular screen tangentially and radically achieving size reduction.

MASS FLOW CONTROLLERS Designed specifically for OEM and process integration, BASIS is Alicat’s smallest footprint instrument. It controls gas flow rates used for mixing or diluting, or supplied into processes - such as gas analyzers, custom blending manifolds and burners. BASIS has been qualified and accepted by customers within gas chromatography, gas mixing, and sputtering for film coating, as well as burner applications. The BASIS is accurate at very low flow rates (eg, 1 sccm), performing better than other mass flow controllers in its price class. Its high turndown ratio - as high as 200:1 - means that fewer devices are needed to control a wide range of flow. Fewer instruments and a compact size ensure a space- and cost-saving fit, without sacrificing performance. BASIS also has a rapid control response time of 100 ms, not attainable on most flow controllers of its size and ease of use. Its industrial interface facilitates rapid integration into gas flow systems. The BASIS line of mass flow controllers come in three flow ranges: 1-100 sccm, 5-1000 sccm and 0.1-20 slpm. They can be configured with six selectable gases - Air, Ar, CO 2 , N 2 , O 2 and N 2 O - or with He or H 2 . FLOAT-OPERATED LEVEL TRANSMITTER Stem carrying series of reed switches and resistors forms a potentiometer circuit, which extends to the full indicating length of the transmitter. As the float travels through the indicating distance, the magnet located within it top off the reed switches, thereby varying the resistance fed to the electronics, which in turn converts the change in resistance to industry standard analogue output. The solution is ideal for monitoring flow along water pipes. The solution includes a controller and GSM/GPRS modem, and two additional digital inputs for monitoring. Data is sent to centrally located server through GPRS/GSM at programmed frequency through

Capacitance level transmitter works on the principle of change in capacitance value, due to change in liquid level. Here the liquid acts as the dielectric, the probe and tank wall as electrodes. The change in capacitance value is converted to 4-20 mA analogue output. It is available for conductive as well as non-conductive liquids. PTFE sleeve is provided to the electrodes for better insulation and to withstand high temperature. It finds application in diesel tank, solvent tank, STP tank, water tank (RO, DM, soft, raw), acidic and alkaline tank.

SHRINKWRAP MACHINE After completion of filling, capping and labelling, product containers are being fed automatically to lane divider and start moving in a single lane form on the collating table in a matrix form. Required container pack matrix formation is being done by collation through a pneumatic pusher, which after completion is transferred forward for the web sealer position. Immediate after proposed matrix enters into web sealer, the welding bar activates to complete the wrap and the pusher returns to prepare the next collation of product. As the welding bar ascends, the pusher advances to transfer the new collation into the welding position, at the same time displacing the previously wrapped collation on to continuously moving shrink tunnel conveyor. Once proposed wrapped matrix enters the shrink tunnel chamber, re-circulated hot air causes the wrap to shrink and tightly conform to the contours of the contents. Once the pack comes out of the hot chamber, air cooling is used to tighten sleeve wrap to achieve a strong, secure pack ready for stacking on pallet or a placing on a shipping carton. In semi-automatic shrinkwrap machine the pusher mechanism will be manual and respective specification and feature changes. MOTORISED DIVERTER

DIGITAL TIMERS

Motorised diverters can be offered where there is a requirement for transfer of filled and stitched bags to another conveyor at an angle approximately 120 degrees with the main conveyor. This can also be used in the rejection system. The more the angle the better will be the transfer. The motorised diverter consists of the geared motor (vertically mounted), frame and pulleys for belt operations, pneumatic mechanism for diverter operations, fixing and angle adjustment mechanism and belt The belt moves towards the delivery side. In case of accepted bags, the pneumatic mechanism of the diverter remains parallel to the rejection conveyor allowing the bags to transfer to the next device. If the bag is rejected at previous device then the pneumatic mechanism turns into the path of the rejection conveyor and the bag is diverted out of the conveyor.

Programmable timer is 4-digit timer in 72 x 72 mm housing. This has four models – On delay, Off delay, Cyclic On First, Cyclic Off First. Time is selectable by user. Output offered is through 2 changeover relay contacts. Time toraliser/hour meter is used for time management. Count and display time is either on hours, minutes or hours, minutes, sec and is offered in 6-digits. Sequential timer is suitable for process automation having sequence of operations. The unit has a relay output, which are sequentially made On and Off.

FLAMMABLE GAS ANALYSER

ANCHOR/GATE TYPE IMPELLER

The SERVOPRO 4210 multi-gas analyser is designed to monitor flammable gas samples including H 2/CO, HYCO or Syngas mixtures for trace level contaminants and per cent level components. The 4210 offers oxygen control using servomex’s unique paramagnetic cell, trace level measurement of CO, CO 2, N 2O and CH 4 using photometric sensor technology and IR technology for measurement of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane at per cent levels.

Anchors/Gate Type impellers are closeclearance impellers that fit the contour of the vessel. These impellers provide adequate mixing under the laminar flow conditions encountered in high viscosity applications for heat transfer. These impellers sweep the whole wall surface of the vessel and agitate most of the fluid batch through physical contact. Anchor impellers are used for liquid viscosities between 5,000 and 50,000 cP. When reaction/mixing homogeneity is required, other types of impellers are recommended.

FEP ENCAPSULATED O-RINGS & GASKETS The seamless, uniform Teflon polymer encapsulation provides the chem-rings near universal sealing capability, whilst the continuous reset and the constant pressure of the encapsulation on to the sealing point is performed by the elastomeric core. The result is an overall sealing compression that increases with media pressure. The Chem-Ring behaves like a highly viscous fluid, any pressure exerted on the seal is transmitted practically undiminished in all directions. The Chem-Ring is an O-ring, consisting of a seamless and uniform Teflon encapsulation, which completely encloses the core material of silicone or Viton. In brief, the seal is manufactured by pressure injecting the rubber core material into thin wall Teflon tubing. This eliminates any potential gap between the core and the tube wall. The Teflon tubing is joined by a special heat moulding process to give a true, seamless, encapsulation. On Shree Gaurav Chem-Ring, the mould area exhibits no discernible different characteristics to the rest of the circumferance of the seal. There are no joints nor ridges to effect the seal’s performance nor life. The nature of the moulding process is critical to the quality of the ring. Standards for the manufacure of moulded rubber O-rings call for close tolerances on the IDs and particularly, the cross-sections of the rings. Outside these tolerances, any step in the cross-section can severely affect the O-rings ability to seal. FEP encaspsulated O-rings are hand moulded in a very precise and skilled operation. HEXAPOD Aerotech’s HexGen hexapods represent a significant advance in six-degree-of-freedom positioning performance. The HEX300-230HL, is targeted at medium-load, ultra-precision applications ranging from sensor testing to synchrotron sample manipulation. Aerotech’s HexGen hexapods are the only hexapods on the market today that provide positioning accuracy specifications below 5 μm. The HEX300-230HL is actuated with six high-accuracy struts built with precision preloaded bearings, ball screws and drive components. Unlike competitive hexapods driven by DC brush servomotors, the HEX300-230HL is driven by Aerotech’s AC brushless, slotless servomotors that maximize its performance and longevity. Directly coupling the AC brushless servomotors to the ball screw results in increased drive stiffness, higher positioning accuracy and better minimum incremental motion (20 nm in XYZ and 0.2 μrad for x/y/z), compared to competitive designs using belts, gearheads or compliant couplings. Specially-engineered strut pivot-joints provide low friction and high stiffness, enhancing the hexapod’s overall performance. The HEX300-230HL’s superior structural design offers the user a generous load capacity of up to 45 kg. The HEX300-230HL’s platform and base can be easily modified with user-specific features or mounting patterns. It features a 100 mm dia clear aperture in the platform, while a 60 mm dia clear aperture in the base allows workpiece access from the bottom. Solartron ISA’s Dualstream meters are designed for direct installation at a wellhead or flow line, either top side or subsea. Stable and reliable with a typical lifespan greater than 20 years, Dualstream meters are ideal for unmanned platforms and marginal field development as well as for ultra deepwater installation. The Dualstream family consists of four products: Dualstream Venturi, the original wet gas metering system, is a cost-effective solution for allocation or monitoring gas flow rates. Applications include tie-ins to existing infrastructure and multi-well fields, in which production fluids remain relatively constant throughout the field’s life. The Dualstream Venturi is generally used in combination with test separators or tracer dilution techniques. Dualstream 1 is a multiphase measurement solution for allocation or monitoring gas condensate wells. It is typically used on a per well basis at the wellhead or in the flow line. Standard field instrumentation makes it ideal for remote wellheads or unmanned platforms. The Dualstream 1 is recommended when real-time, high-accuracy gas measurement is a fundamental requirement, and water measurement accuracy is required for efficient well operation. Dualstream 1 replaces the need for test separators or tracer dilution techniques. Dualstream 2 is a multiphase measurement solution typically used on wells with high levels of liquids, which can cause gas rate over read. The Dualstream 2 uses a dual pressure differential technique to measure liquid levels and a proprietary algorithm to achieve real-time, multi-phase measurement. Dualstream 3 utilizes a unique, patented Solartron approach for water fraction measurement for real-time measurement of phase fractions in wet gas applications. Its flow meters incorporate multipath, non-intrusive sensors that have demonstrated excellent performance in oil and water continuous flow and proven to be extremely robust in handling changes in field hydrocarbon compositions. NEW PLATFORM OF HMI WORKSTATIONS Eaton has expanded its range of MTL GECMA HMI workstations, introducing two new products – a Thin Client (TC) and Personal Computer (PC) version. The company can now offer a complete range of workstations based on a common platform design. As such, Plant Managers can reduce operation costs, optimise productivity and increase plant safety, with the additional benefits of reducing space in the cabinet and future-proofing the plant. The TC and PC versions complement the existing MTL GECMA Remote Terminal (RT) which has a unique modular design. These next generation HMIs feature state-of-the-art technology to offer unparalleled levels of safety and are approved to global hazardous certification for Zone 1 environments. As a result they offer safe handling on site and guarantee high reliability in hazardous EX zone areas in chemical, pharmaceutical, refinery plus the oil and gas industries worldwide. The TC version is designed for virtualisation applications, eg. batch control. The workstation works with a client server in the safe room across a LAN. This saves space in the cabinet as users do not need a dedicated PC and the user can control up to 255 HMIs from a single server. The PC version is stand-alone working across the LAN. It has state-of-the-art system hardware, which meets the needs of the most complex applications with high computing power demand, eg, packing. The workstation has a watch dog function which automatically monitors the operating system and if there is no input from the system it automatically restarts itself. This avoids hard re-starts, which saves time associated with turning the system On and Off, and minimises any stress on the system for increased reliability. RT is a point-to-point device, with one workstation assigned to one PC in the safe area. It features a keyboard, mouse and video, and is perfect for controlling tablet coating or dry granulation machines. The RT terminal’s modularity means upgrades to existing installations are quick and easy, which can save time, and minimise costly maintenance and downtime. Traditionally, the whole unit would have to be dismantled off-site, but with MTL GECMA, individual parts can be replaced simply on-site, increasing plant availability.

DENSITY COMPENSATED WATER CUT MONITOR AMETEK Drexelbrook has enhanced its Universal IV Density Compensated Water Cut Monitor with updated firmware to allow for up to 10 different density calibration points to reduce recalibration requirements and ensure maximum accuracy load to load. The new Universal IV In-Line Water Cut Monitor (CM) with Multi-Cal Density Compensation automatically compensates for density changes that may occur in the composition of products and reduces the calibration requirements due to those changes. The Universal IV CM is designed for high-accuracy water in oil measurement. The DCM allows the Universal IV CM to maintain its stated accuracy with variations in density up to 10 API, ensuring measurement accuracy from load to load regardless of changes in product composition. All Universal IV CMs come factory pre-calibrated and require only one-point validation. Field configuration can be done anywhere along a two-wire loop with the STExplorer software. Users also can configure the instrument via local display/keypad without the need for a laptop or handheld communicators. The Universal IV CM utilizes electrical measurement (capacitance) and correlates that to water cut (% of oil in water). Those measurements can be affected by changes in density. Density compensation is done to correct for changes in electrical properties that may impact output measurement and is particularly suitable for midstream refinery and oil pipeline operators. Along with optional Density Compensation, the Universal IV CM features an in-line probe design that allows it to analyze a large representative sample of flowing fluid in real time. Its sensing element extends into the main process line, taking an average of the capacitive property of the fluid over its entire length. The monitor’s onboard electronics then computes the relationship between capacitance change and water cut. The Universal IV CM offers the industry’s highest pressure and temperature capabilities (1500 PSI and temperatures up to 450oF) as well as field-proven Cote-Shield technology, which ignores coating buildup on the probe. A temperature-compensation (TC) version is available that measures product temperature internally and calculates a true water cut reading at any temperature as long as the water is in liquid state. Applications for the Universal IV CM include automatic well testing (AWT), lease automatic custody transfer (LACT), basic sediment and water (BS&W), separation vessels, pipeline slug detection, truck unloading, pipe protection, dielectric analysis and machinery lube oil monitoring. CeramTec has developed a drip chamber level sensor solution which draws on the company’s unparalleled materials expertise to deliver superior measurement accuracy and performance in medical applications. Designed in response to the needs of medical device manufacturers as well as CE and FDA regulations, the innovation provides a level of measurement accuracy crucial in so many medical devices, including haemodialysis machines and other liquid/ blood handling applications. Featuring ultrasonic technology, the level sensor can easily distinguish between liquid and foam, unlike capacitive sensors, helping to ensure that the presence of non-liquid materials does not interfere with the accuracy of measurements. For flexible chambers of approximately 20mm diameter the level sensor is designed to clip firmly onto the chamber and can be easily removed as required. The level sensor can be suspended from the chamber or alternatively, mounted to the machine via screw fitting and subsequently positioned against the chamber. Furthermore, it has been specially engineered to ensure continuous operation in temperatures of up to 105°C and can even withstand up to 130°C. Finally, the level sensor is designed to be easily cleaned with most commonly used medical cleaning agents and is sealed to IP67. For rigid chambers, a derivative of this level sensor has been made that dry couples to the chamber and can transmit through most plastics, glass and even aluminium. This design utilises the electronics and sensing elements from the sensor, which can then be housed in a mount that is available in a wide range of dimensions and can be tailored to meet individual customer requirements. Because of the compact nature of the level sensors elements, multiple levels can be monitored as close as 4mm apart, giving continuous feedback to the machine which can then be used to control pump speed.Richard Miles, Business Manager at CeramTec, explained: “Increasingly our level sensor technology and custom design capabilities have been called upon to solve level sensing problems associated with tight spaces, complex geometries and challenging materials where the safe and reliable operation of the machine with no nuisance fault alarms ensures medical staff can concentrate more on their patients and supporting their needs. Our new standard level sensors ideally complement our existing sensor range to offer great versatility in non-contact applications where safety cannot be compromised.

Unrivalled accuracy in level sensors used for non-invasive level measurement

Following its success in the lab, Covestro plans to further develop the new process together with partners from industry and research. The first step is to upscale the process in a pilot plant with the ultimate goal of enabling the production of bio-based aniline on an industrial scale. That would be an unprecedented achievement in the chemical industry. Unprecedented achievement About five million metric tons of aniline are produced annually worldwide; the total volume has been increasing by an average of about five percent every year. With a production capacity of about one million metric tons, Covestro is among the leading producers. The company requires aniline as a precursor for rigid polyurethane foam, a highly efficient insulating material used in buildings and refrigeration systems. “The market is showing great interest in ecologically beneficial products based on renewable raw materials,” said Covestro Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Markus Steilemann. “Being able to derive aniline from biomass is another key step towards making the chemical and plastics industries less dependent on fossil raw materials and market fluctuations. With this, we are pursuing our vision of making the world a brighter place.” “The process currently under development uses renewable raw materials and produces aniline with a much better CO2 footprint than that manufactured with standard technology,” said Covestro project manager Dr. Gernot Jäger. “This also enables our customers to markedly improve the CO2 footprint of their aniline-based products.” And the reactions would take place under milder conditions. The ecological aspects of the process are also being thoroughly evaluated by external institutes.

Covestro achieves a breakthrough in research

100 percent of carbon from biomass The industry currently derives aniline from benzene, a petroleumbased raw material. But industrial sugar, which is already derived on large scale from, for example, feed corn, straw and wood, can be used instead. The newly developed process uses a microorganism as a catalyst to first convert the industrial sugar into an aniline precursor. The aniline is then derived by means of chemical catalysis in a second step. “This means one hundred percent of the carbon in the aniline comes from renewable raw materials,” explained Jäger. Covestro is working with the University of Stuttgart, the CAT Catalytic Center at RWTH Aachen University, and Bayer AG to further develop the process. “This interdisciplinary, motivated team combines all the needed expertise at a very high level and is the basis for continued success,” said Jäger. The long-term research project will receive funding for a period of two and a half years through the FNR (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V.), a project agency of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Covestro has scored a research breakthrough for the use of plant-based raw materials in plastics production: aniline, an important basic chemical, can now be derived from biomass. The materials manufacturer achieved this by collaborating with partners on the development of a completely new process, initially in the laboratory. Until now, only fossil raw materials had been used for the production of aniline, which plays an important role in the chemical industry and is used as starting material for numerous products.

Covestro is already using renewable raw materials in a number of different products. A hardener for coatings that the company developed is one example: up to 70 percent of its carbon content is derived from plants. And CO2 is also increasingly being used an alternative raw material. Used in place of petroleum, CO2 accounts for up to 20 percent of the raw materials used in a precursor for flexible polyurethane foam that Covestro began producing in 2016. The company is also researching and developing many more products based on CO2. Chemical Products Finder | June-July 2017 | 45

PITTSBURGH, PA – Industrial Scientific, the global leader in gas detection, is pleased to announce that effective immediately, all products will be manufactured according to European Union Directive 2011/65/EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Standard. All products shipped from Industrial Scientific manufacturing facilities to European customers will meet RoHS compliance standards. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU prohibit the sale of electronics with certain hazardous materials to member countries. The substances include lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. The goal of RoHS is to reduce the impact of global consumer electronic waste. Each of the prohibited chemicals has been shown to have negative health effects on humans through direct contact, even at low exposure levels, and when electronics containing the chemicals are discarded. “Industrial Scientific is dedicated to preserving human life, so it only makes sense that we are also fully committed to protecting the environment and reducing exposure to hazardous chemicals,” said Justin McElhattan, president and CEO of Industrial Scientific. “By eliminating the restricted materials from our products, Industrial Scientific is protecting our employees from any potential exposure while reducing the environmental impact our products have on our communities.”

The product designation “ULP” stands for “Ultra Low Pressure,” because the advantage of these membranes is their ability to remove such organic compounds almost entirely even at low operating pressures. “Drinking water systems process tremendous volumes of surface water often on a daily basis. Therefore, to minimize investment costs, it is desirable to have a membrane that displays high water permeability and thus a high flow rate, like those in our Lewabrane RO ULP line,” explains Scheffler.

from drugs, household chemicals, industrial chemicals, cosmetic products and crop protection agents, they are introduced into the water system by household and industrial wastewater.

To reduce the formation of organic deposits – i.e. typical biofouling – in wastewater, the ULP membrane uniquely has the most hydrophilic surface of all the Lewabrane product grades. Thanks to this hydrophilic behavior, a thin, protective film of water forms on the membrane surface, which reduces the adsorption of organic substances. The ASD feed spacers, which are inserted in the membrane elements to create space between their surfaces for flowing water, also reduce fouling. They have an alternating strand design (ASD), comprising filaments of different thickness, which cause uniform overflow and thus counteract biofouling. This lowers operating costs because fewer cleaning chemicals are required and the interval between cleanings can be extended. Multi-ReUse Project: Lewabrane in end-of-pipe solutions

LANXESS expands range of membranes for reverse osmosis Specialty chemicals company LANXESS is expanding its range of membrane elements for reverse osmosis (RO). The new Lewabrane RO ULP line has three product grades available immediately for water treatment. They display higher water permeability than the standard elements, while offering the similar high level of rejection of critical substances. The operating pressure required in the pressure vessel is 40 percent lower, which reduces operating costs. Furthermore, the new membranes are a good option for removing trace elements from wastewater and drinking water. “The new ULP products are recommended for applications in which a high flow rate, moderate salt rejection and low power consumption are the primary design parameters. Fields of application therefore are the cost-efficient filtration of drinking water and high-tech wastewater treatment,” says Alexander Scheffler, director membrane business in the LANXESS Liquid Purification Technologies business unit (LPT). “Our customers are so impressed with the performance profile that we already have received numerous pre-orders,” he adds. The research project on “Modular Treatment and Monitoring in Wastewater Recycling (Multi-ReUse)” was launched in 2016 with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This project aims to develop and improve processes for the economical use of wastewater. Against this backdrop, the Oldenburgisch-Ostfriesische Wasserverband (OOWV Water Management Association) joined forces with research partners – IWW Zentrum Wasser GmbH and the Biofilm Center at Duisburg-Essen University (UDE) – and equipment companies – inge GmbH, IAB Ionenaustauscher GmbH Bitterfeld (a wholly owned LANXESS subsidiary) and De.EnCon GmbH – to develop flexible processes for producing defined water qualities and volumes. To achieve its goals, the consortium is using innovative processing combinations and new developments in the field of membrane technology. At the same time, fast and reliable methods are being developed for process control and for monitoring the quality of hygienerelevant parameters. The results are being implemented at the Nordenham water treatment plant in Lower Saxony in collaboration with the OOWV. This pilot facility is due to go into operation in July 2017. It incorporates membrane elements from LANXESS, including the new ULP products. “We are studying the fouling and rejection behaviour of our membrane elements in long-term practical trials,” explains Scheffler. Industry News Topsoe to help HMEL meet BS-VI fuel specification on fast track Indian refinery company HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd (HMEL) has chosen Topsoe’s diesel hydrotreater unit and hydrogen generation facilities to meet their upgrading requirements. The revamped refinery in Bathinda, Punjab will meet the BS VI (equivalent to Euro VI) fuel specifications, when completed in the last quarter of 2019. Topsoe’s bundled technology solution and the fast project implementation will make it possible for HMEL to meet the BS VI fuel specification deadline. This solution requires less investment than competing solutions along with shorter project implementation time, while providing optimal feed flexibility to meet processing objectives. The solution offers substantial project cost savings using a new diesel hydrotreater unit supplemented by revamp of the existing hydrogen generation facility with two of Topsoe’s proprietary heat exchange reformers (HTER). The compact HTERs are always individually customized for each plant to provide capacity increases up to 30% with a very small footprint. The diesel hydrotreater unit will be optimized to take full advantage of Topsoe’s HyBRIMTM TK-611 ultra-low sulfur diesel catalyst that deliver 25% improved activity for both nitrogen and sulfur removal and longer cycle lengths while processing complex feeds. “HMEL has chosen this solution based on Topsoe’s insight into processes, hardware, and catalysts for ultra-low sulfur diesel. We are very satisfied to be able to deliver such a highly effective integrated solution in a very short time,” says Morten Schaldemose, Executive Vice President, Refinery Business Unit, Haldor Topsoe. BASF introduces first new class of public health insecticide for malaria prevention in more than 30 years LIMBURGERHOF, Germany- BASF has received a recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for Interceptor® G2, a long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito net (LN) based on Chlorfenapyr. Chlorfenapyr is a completely new insecticide class for combating mosquitoes for public health. This is the first WHO recommendation for a product based on a new insecticide class in more than 30 years.

Working with the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in a collaboration lasting over a decade, BASF’s scientists successfully repurposed Chlorfenapyr to be effective on mosquito nets and meet stringent WHO performance thresholds for public health. Dave Malone, IVCC Technical Manager, said “The collaboration with BASF gave us access to an insecticide with a rare combination of attributes: New to public health, effective against resistant mosquitoes, and able to coat polyester netting with a long-lasting formulation.” A second Chlorfenapyr product, an indoor residual spray named Sylando® 240SC, is also in the final phases of WHO evaluation. Around the world, every two minutes a child dies from malaria and there are more than 200 million new cases every year. Malaria is also a major cause of global poverty and its burden is greatest among the most vulnerable. Long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets (LN) and indoor residual sprays (IRS) are the cornerstones of malaria prevention, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. But 60 countries have already reported resistance to at least one class of insecticide used in them. Part of the problem is that there were previously only four WHO-recommended insecticide classes for adult mosquito control: Only one of them, the pyrethroid class, was recommended for LNs. Continual use of the same insecticides enabled the highly-adaptable mosquito to develop significant levels of resistance. Independent trials in Benin, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Ivory Coast have proven the efficacy of Interceptor G2 and Sylando 240SC against local insecticide-resistant mosquitoes. Medical entomologist Professor Hilary Ranson from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has studied the problem for many years. “We’ve got to take insecticide resistance very seriously,” she said. “In some countries, the local mosquito population has increased its level of resistance 1,000-fold. It has been years since a new class of public health insecticide has appeared on the market. Alternatives are urgently needed.” Following the WHO recommendation, BASF will start preparations to launch Interceptor G2 for malaria prevention. Depending on local registration processes, the new mosquito net is expected to be available to health ministries and aid organizations starting towards the end of this year. “New resistance management products are desperately needed to prevent mosquito-borne diseases and save lives,” said Egon Weinmueller, Head of BASF’s public health business. “This development breakthrough strengthens my personal belief that we really can be the generation to end malaria for good.”
