Interview

Outokumpu: A Stainless pillar to support Make in India and Zero Defect Vision of the Prime Minister With a decade-old presence in the Indian Stainless Steel Industry, Outokumpu India Pvt. Ltd has played a vital role in strengthening qualitative aspirations of the end users in their quest to achieve the Zero Defect, thus contributing to their commitment of building corrosion free India. Speaking on the eve of successful completion of a decade serving the industry with its new age products and applications for stainless steel, Yatinder Suri, Managing Director & Country Head, Outokumpu India Pvt Ltd discusses about setting up well-known European brand in India, India’s growing stainless steel demand, Duplex Stainless Steel solution, Global Sustainability Benchmark, Make In India initiative and company’s future Mr. Yatinder Suri Managing Director & Country Head Outokumpu India Pvt Ltd

plans in an interview with Mittravinda Ranjan. Congratulations on successful completion of a decade at Outokumpu India Pvt Ltd. Please share insight into the journey till now since its Indian establishment in 2006?

sharing ideas and knowledge through presentations, brochures and technical specification handbooks. We continue doing this even today since our advanced R&D set up keeps inventing new products and creating new applications every year.

Please elaborate on challenges faced during the initial phase of setting up well-known European brand in India?

In your opinion, what opportunities did India offered decade ago for MNCs like Outokumpu to enter the Indian market?

From the first baby steps from New Delhi, we are now present in four locations i.e. Mumbai, Baroda, Delhi and Chennai - all stainless steel intensive regions. The stainless steel intensity in the eastern parts of the country is nascent so we are nurturing it from Delhi at the moment till it reaches the inflection point. Western India uses about 52 per cent of the total stainless requirement, 32 per cent comes from the Delhi area and around 15 per cent comes from the South which is growing pretty fast now.

Outokumpu came to India in 2006 with new age products and applications that didn’t exist in terms of wider product forms and specialty grades for hostile applications. From day one, we declared a war against corrosion in India. Naturally, so because if you trace the origins of stainless steel, you will find the same in Outokumpu. The initial challenge was to create awareness about corrosion mitigation by using the new age products. We had to break the myth about stainless steel being expensive by enlightening the end user and educating the consultants and the decision makers on the competitive advantages they could derive. First few years were spent educating stakeholders, doing workshops, 8 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

The per capita use of stainless steel in India is less than 3 kg as opposed to that of >12 kg in China. The “Make in India” campaign will improve our manufacturing base and the need for stainless steel for industrial equipment will increase. Hopefully, in the next decade we can aim to achieve per capita mark of 5 kg. In 2013, Outokumpu celebrated 100 years of Stainless Steel by organising a conference in New Delhi with a theme – Building Corrosion Free India.

Interview

To be very honest, our presence in India in past decade has strengthened the qualitative aspirations of the end users in their quest to achieve the ZERO DEFECT and Make In India For The World vision. Outokumpu caters to an array of manufacturing industry. Please share insight into the prospects of stainless steel in terms of infrastructure in India? •

What assistance does the company provides to the local industry on its efforts to reach ever higher quality and efficiency standards?

Outokumpu offers the broadest range of stainless steels to meet the exacting standards of today’s emerging megatrends due to robust economic growth in India. Whether the application areas are in hinterland or the applications are onshore or offshore, upstream or downstream, we have the appropriate grade of stainless steel to neutralise the corrosive environment and retain the aesthetic beauty of infrastructure investments. Our Duplex and Super-Duplex Stainless steel products offer profitable and competitive advantages to the project owners in Oil storage , chemical storage, distribution pipelines, Metro coaches, Railway coaches , Railway wagons , Road and Rail bridges , skywalks , Chemical tanker ships , Food processing, Desalination, water treatment , storage and distribution systems. Duplex storage tanks have also been made to store oils and corrosive chemicals in tank farms at sea ports. Stainless steel is preferred for desalination of sea water into drinking water and also for drinking water storage and distribution for humans in safe and hygienic manner. Railway coaches, Metro coaches, wagons will become maintenance-free and lighter to save on haulage energy as well as wear-and-tear costs. Railway bridges along coastlines will also become maintenance-free with the use of Duplex stainless steel. As the nation upgrades to Euro VI in auto exhaust emissions, there will be a need for micro alloyed heat resisting grades of stainless steel from Outokumpu. 10 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

These are some of the new applications we are supporting successfully for the emerging Indian infrastructure as well as smart cities. Outokumpu stainless steel products have been used for decades in various oil and gas applications including flowlines, umbilicals, manifolds, heat exchangers, burners and flarers, structural components and safety systems As one of the largest suppliers of stainless steel for the oil and gas industry, we offer NORSOK approved Duplex and austenitic grades .

For piping and related applications the functionality is critical in terms of: •

Extreme performance is vital for main process piping where extreme conditions require extreme measures, for which 2205, SAF 2507® and 254 SMO® are perfect choice.

Enhanced corrosion resistance for oil and gas coolers is needed since many of the tube heat exchangers in oil & gas coolers use seawater as a coolant. The enhanced corrosion resistance provided by 254 SMO® or SAF 2507® are ideal.

The fluids in manifolds are just as corrosive as in main process piping. When pressures are high, 2205 and SAF 2507® are perfect choices.

For subsea processes the areas, our stainless steel plays vital role: •

Combatting corrosion in flowlines: CO2, chlorides, H2S, the formation of water condensate, as well as high flowrates and temperatures require the toughest materials, e.g. LDX 2101® or 2205.

Welded tubes for umbilicals: Welded stainless steel tubes have replaced seamless stainless tubes in recent years with LDX 2101®, 2304, 2205, SAF 2507® offering good choices.

Ease of welding and top durability for wellhead equipment and Xmas trees

• As H2S rises, risk of SSC or hydrogen embrittlement requires LDX 2101® or 2205, which are also formable and easy to weld. Also possible are SAF 2507®, 254 SMO®, 1.4565 and 1.4529. For topside construction the critical requirements areas are: •

Superior strength and minimum maintenance are required for blast, firewalls and living quarters where 1.4404/316L and 2304 offer the necessary properties, while 2205 is recommended for areas requiring even greater corrosion resistance. True safety and cost-efficiency are needed for cable trays, stairs, tread plates and walkways. Although 1.4404/316L has become the benchmark, LDX 2101® and 2304 combine high mechanical strength and excellent corrosion resistance to form a far more economical choice.

At higher temperatures and for better corrosion resistance, seawater piping with 254 SMO® and 1.4529 have been highly successful in systems operating at up to 30° C. Combined with 1.4565 for flanges or other parts prone to crevice corrosion, service temperatures can be increased. Referring to some successful cases, for Al Shaheen oil field project in Doha , some of the pipes for sensitive sections in the top side equipment on the offshore platforms were exposed to very high corrosion, especially due to the aggressiveness of crude oil, the super-austenitic grade 254 SMO® was used. Gansu Lanke Petrochemical Equipment of China has extended the service life of its oil refineries from 1-3 months to 2 years and beyond by using Outokumpu grade 2205 duplex stainless steel in plate air-cooler and plate shell heat exchangers. Sosta used Outokumpu 2205 duplex stainless steel coil to manufacture welded Duplex stainless steel flow-line pipes for a natural gas flow line at the Burhan West field in Oman. The project is developed by Petroleum Development Oman. In India too, looking at the diverse and on project experience of Outokumpu expertise, Outokumpu is in discussions with many local oil companies to opt for Duplex solutions. The outcome is very positive.

Interview

As per World Steel Association report, India’s steel demand will grow at 5.4 per cent to 88.3 MT in 2017. In your opinion, what key growth drivers will fuel this demand? •

With low oil prices, reforms and policies to increase infrastructure and manufacturing output. How brightening is India’s prospect as world’s third largest steel producer? China’s slowdown has impacted its steel demand. According to you, how will it impact global market demand & India in particular?

Stainless steel production share is around 4 per cent of the total steel production in India as against the global average of 2.5 per cent. Sadly enough the per capita use in India is barely 2.5 kg as compared to 12 kg in China. This is because of our low share of manufacturing in GDP i.e 14 per cent only as compared to 44 per cent in China. India needs to pursue accelerated substitution strategy to replace carbon steel with stainless steel to create surge in demand for stainless steel which will also eliminate the current over capacity in the long products as well as flat products segment. There are over 400 grades of stainless steel which can be used for the diverse range of applications depending on the operational environment. In India the dominant demand comes from the utensils and kitchenware application segment which is using non-standard grades with production share as high as 60 per cent. This is the lowest end application growing @ 6 per cent annually being catered to by over three dozen induction melting route manufacturing units as well as the four integrated manufacturing plants. This is also the grade which has seen flooding of imports. It is unfortunate that the stainless steel quality control order excludes this non-standard grade from its purview and thus the flood of imports in this nonstandard grade continues unabated. This must be stopped if India wishes to succeed in its intent to serve the Make in India for the World vision. To become a hub for manufacturing quality products for the world, conforming to international standards is the first step. 12 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

The industrial and infrastructure applications constitute 35 per cent of the overall demand (around 800,000 tons per annum). As our economy is stepping up the GDP growth, stainless steel for industrial applications is observing the fastest pace of growth, as high as 1520 per cent. The capital goods segment is also enhancing its presence in global markets with stainless steel conforming to international standards. With banning of seconds and defectives by stainless steel quality control order, the demand of prime products will increase further. Corrosion is a serious issue in India due to our long coast line of 7000 kms. Hence all steel related infrastructures must use stainless steel mandatorily. Almost 4 per cent of our GDP is lost to corrosion and being cash starved nation, we cannot afford the luxury of allowing infrastructure built with carbon steel to corrode. Corrosion Mitigation is a national priority now. Stainless steel usage will eliminate the extra cost of replacement or frequent repairs. Stainless steel is cheaper than carbon steel on life cycle cost basis. In 2015, the Government had imposed an anti-dumping duty ranging from 5 to 57 per cent on import of cold-rolled flat products of stainless steel from China for five years. Please share insight into your thoughts on this? The domestic stainless steel manufacturing industry is facing problems due to high level of imports at low prices as well as overcapacity which is as high as 50 per cent. In zeal to fill capacity, there is a downward spiral in prices which hurts every domestic mill in the long run. Imposing Anti-dumping duty on dumped imports is the fairest way to eliminate unfair competition due to dumping. With reduced imports, the domestic players surely need to follow a responsible pricing strategy to improve their bottom lines. Product upgradation from plain Vanilla grades should also be a strategy to expand the pie.

Domestic sale and Import of Defectives, second choice stainless steel materials as well as products not conforming to International standards should be banned. This will automatically curb imports in a big way and create profitable demand for prime products from domestic mills. The import duty structure should be logical to ensure that demand for domestic stainless steel from downstream end users is healthy and end users will also be protected from unfair dumping of imports. There is no R&D capability in domestic stainless industry. Government should encourage co-operation between the global majors and local mills to upgrade domestic capabilities in the long run which will increase sale of domestic mills profitably. India must follow BIS as well as international standards to ensure that Indian products travel to all regions of globe and serve Make in India for the World vision. Over the last 3 decades, premature deterioration of reinforced concrete structures has become a serious problem globally due to corrosion of the embedded steel. How beneficial will stainless steel reinforcement solution prove to be for the industry? •

How Outokumpu does plans to overcome the issue as well assist the industry with its Duplex Stainless Steel solution?

Outokumpu is committed to make India corrosion-free. India has extremely ambitious growth plans and infrastructure will play a pivotal role. The long Indian coastline of 7000 kms faces the vagaries of highly corrosive environment. Duplex stainless steel is the answer and there are plenty of global success stories where duplex structural elements and reinforcing bars have been used to achieve more than 100 years of maintenance-free life. The new application area of the stainless steel rebar usage along the coastal areas is an idea whose time has come. More

logically for civil RCC structures in coastal and hilly regions, if stainless steel rebar is used selectively, the cost of the project could go up by less than 1 per cent, but the maintenance free life can go beyond 100 years. We have actively supported the preparation of a BIS standard with samples, test data and very soon the standard will be released in print. The Outokumpu vision is to create a world that lasts forever; we are pursuing this vision aggressively in India as well. With the largest R&D set up, a wide range of high performance grades makes us a standout amongst the competition to cater to all process and environment conditions. Our willingness to share our 100 years of experience with end users is yet another impactful differentiator in the competitive arena. As per Dow Jones, Outokumpu enjoys global benchmark in sustainability in steel segment. Please elaborate on company’s varied sustainable initiatives in India? •

What is the significance of stainless steel in the context of sustainability?

Sustainability has always been, and continues to be, a key element of our strategy. Stainless steel is 100 per cent recyclable, corrosion-resistant, durable, hygienic material and the environmental impacts resulting from its use are almost non-existent. Outokumpu strongly believes that stainless steel is the key building block for a sustainable future, playing an important role in the sustainable development of global infrastructure. New business opportunities are emerging from humanity's growing demands for clean energy and pure water. Renewable energy solutions such as solar power, hydel power, biofuels and wind energy require components and materials that can be sustainably sourced and yield low life cycle costs. Stainless steel is an optimal choice in such areas. We strongly believe that our integrated production routes with high proportion 14 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

of recycled steel (>80 per cent), energy efficiency and low-carbon energy (>80 per cent) have enabled us to systematically decrease our products’ environmental footprint, making us one of the global leaders in sustainable stainless. India being a developing country with limited financial resources needs sustainable infrastructure. Our innovative sustainable products have made Indian end users competitive in the global markets and even the domestic industry has gained knowledge from the products and applications which India is not capable to offer currently. Our in-house research and development on products and processes is the largest in the world and has led to development of many new grades and applications. Being the oldest and emerging leader in stainless steel, we have so much to offer to India. The nation needs us and we are ready to do our best to build Stainless India. Please share your views on “Make In India” initiative? Stainless steel is the fastest growing segment of the metals industry, its applications are diverse and new applications are constantly being developed. The demand for the corrosion free metal is on increase. Indian stainless steel production is mostly in low end grades and applications which is a barrier to go global. R&D is an area where India needs support from global leaders like Outokumpu so as to develop capabilities to Make In India for the world. We are well established in the Indian market as a leader in stainless innovations. Our Corrosion Handbook is a guide to the end users on material selection since it contains the wisdom we acquired in last 103 years of stainless innovations. The local competition is emulating us in developing new grades locally. Our presence strengthens and enhances the capability of local players to fulfil the Zero Defect and Make In India vision of the government. The Indian economy is embarking on a robust

planned growth trajectory at the moment with strong positive trends to serve all regions of the world. India and USA have signed a vision statement which aims to make India corrosion free. This is a very healthy development which will support our efforts to eliminate corrosion in infrastructure and industrial applications with improved metallurgical products. It is an ongoing activity and already there are many visible successes and milestone achievements. What are the future plans of the company in India? Outokumpu having been a leader in high performance stainless steels and running the most efficient mill serves the world with the full range of high performance stainless steel. With our expertise and experience in manufacturing advanced and sustainable materials, we are reducing the pace of consumption of our mineral resources in the planet and thus in a significant way making the world last forever.

Talking about India, the industrial and the infrastructure applications constitute 35 per cent of the overall demand (around 700,000tons per annum). Since the range of production capability of domestic integrated plants is rather limited at this point of time, imports are vital to meet demand for high end advanced materials for the accelerated infrastructure growth. Outokumpu presence in India is very relevant for the emerging high end grades and higher dimensions. Being the oldest and largest stainless steel player in the world, we have positioned ourselves as the wise stainless men who are educating the domestic end users on new grades and applications and also giving new opportunities to the domestic mills to learn from us and upgrade their capabilities. We are here to grow by actively supporting and serving the Zero Defect and Make In India for the world vision. ◘

There are different International Standards like ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 13834 Part 5, CMAA (Crane Manufacturers Association of America), FEM (European Federation Standard), HMI (Hoist Manufacturers’ Institute), DIN (Deutsche Industriennorm) Standards available for selection and design of EOT cranes. EOT cranes are suitable for the following movements: •

Long travel

Cross travel

Vertical lift

EOT cranes can be divided into two types: single girder EOT cranes and double girder EOT cranes. If the capacity of the equipment is less than 5-T and length of the span is less than 12-m, going for single girder EOT cranes is more economical rather than double girder EOT cranes. This value can only be used as a thumb rule. Selection of underslung or overhead EOT cranes is based on the following thumb rules: 20 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

EOT cranes can move and cover both cross- and long-travel hook approaches

In compressor and turbine buildings, these are cost-effective, since one is used to handle equipment from different locations in the same building

Fast and precise load movement

Hook approach will be more in case of underslung EOT cranes compared to overhead EOT cranes of same span

Disadvantages •

EOT cranes are costlier than HOT cranes, monorail hoists and chainpulley blocks

Lift availability will decrease in case of underslung EOT cranes compared to overhead EOT cranes of same girder elevation

Their hook coverage area is defined and cannot be used for other locations

If the capacity of the equipment is more than 20-T, underslung EOT cranes are not desirable. It would be more advisable to go for overhead EOT cranes

Additional civil structure is needed to take care of the load

Head room requirement is less in case of underslung EOT cranes, which is not desirable compared to overhead EOT cranes

Before constructing the building, proper head room requirement for the crane should be considered, otherwise going for special designs may unnecessarily increase the expenditure of the equipment. Also, while selecting the motors (two speed motors/VFD/mechanical gear drive), two speed motors are costeffective compared to other speed reduction options for creep speed. VFD is also acceptable if it is cost-effective for creep speed achievements. Similarly, one needs to take into consideration proper safety requirements like limit switches, safety hatch,

HOT (Hand-operated Traveling) Cranes HOT cranes (hand-operated) and EOT cranes (motor-operated) are similar except there are no motors for the movement of HOT cranes. Generally, HOT cranes capacity is limited. However, here more manual effort is required for the movement of girder, trolley, etc. HOT cranes are suitable for the following movements: •

Forklift Trucks Forklift trucks are used for package handling, sludge handling, erection of the equipment, etc. These are generally diesel-operated or electrically battery-operated forklift trucks. Electrically battery-operated are available up to 5-T approx; above that diesel-operated forklift trucks should be considered. Inside the plant optimum speed should be less than 8-kmph and outside the speed cannot be more than 12-kmph. However, these speeds are based on HSE requirements of the plant. Any special attachments for handling the equipment should be informed during procurement itself. Otherwise, the cost may increase due to late information and so too delivery time. These are suitable for handling the equipment from one place to another through pallets. Shape of the equipment should be reviewed before selecting the type of forklift attachments.

Mobile Cranes Mobile cranes are available on the market in different ranges up to more than 1,000T. Following parameters need to be taken care of during erection of this equipment. •

Conclusion Before selecting any materials handling equipment, suitability, accessibility, type of operation and classification should be done. For one-time equipment erection-based on capacity, before erection of building, using mobile crane or forklift truck may be suitable. It may be cost-effective to use a hoist/chain-pulley block for maintaining pumps in same line of arrangement instead of EOT cranes. In remote area where electricity is not available based on capacity and suitability either chain pulley blocks or HOT cranes are preferred options. Project philosophy for materials handling equipment should be checked before selecting the equipment and always check the feasibility of low-cost equipment if all equipment are suitable.

Minimizing the amount of chemicals lost during the connection and disconnection of coupling systems is a significant benefit to the health of the environment and operators, but it can also provide substantial cost savings. High-value chemicals are used throughout the manufacturing industry and utmost care must be taken to reduce any losses to maximize profits. This article from OPW Engineered Systems discusses how dry disconnect coupling systems can help reduce the risk of handling these high-value chemicals.

B

utadiene. Xylene. Toluene. Sulphuric Acid. Potassium Hydroxide. Even the names of these hazardous chemicals sound dangerous. In addition to potentially harming the health of humans and the environment if mishandled, they have another thing in common: they are very expensive to produce. That is why manufacturers, processors, shippers and distributors of highly hazardous, high-value chemicals enter into a tacit agreement with their employees, the environment and bank accounts: these incredibly volatile and valuable fluids must be handled with the utmost care, from the manufacturing plant through the railcars and tanker trucks that ship them and the bulkstorage facilities that house them, lest any damage be done to any of their constituent parties. A key link in the chemical-processing supply chain is the equipment that is used to facilitate the transfer of volatile chemicals from the manufacturing facility to transport vehicles and then to the storage terminal. For years,

the accepted technology for the dry disconnect couplings that would enable the connection of hoses to storage tanks and transport vehicles has featured a poppet-style design.

OH. What sets the Epsilon apart from traditional coupling technologies is the use of a ball-valve design instead of poppets to facilitate opening and closing of the coupling.

The use of poppets, however, can compromise safety and create potential problems for the handler who is looking to ensure the safety of employees and the environment because the shape of the poppets inside the coupler housing form areas where chemicals can nest, meaning that there will always be the possibility that some type of product spill can occur when the couplings are disconnected. This is not a big issue if the fluid being handled is non-hazardous and inexpensive, but a potential problem when handling hazardous and high-value fluids.

When utilizing poppet-style disconnects, (see Figure 1). liquid transfer is initiated when the poppets are opened by the operator (Step 1). The liquid-transfer is completed when the operator closes the poppets (Step 2). However, at this time, a small amount of liquid can be trapped and during disconnection, it is possible that the trapped liquid can escape, leading to a minor product spill (Step 3). When hazardous, high-value chemicals are being handled, this potential product spill can be harmful to site personnel and the environment.

Fortunately for the handlers of dangerous chemicals, there is an alternative dry-disconnect coupling technology that addresses all of the operational shortcomings that are inherent in poppetstyle coupling designs. It is called the Epsilon Dry Disconnect Coupling from OPW Engineered Systems, Lebanon,

The unique ball-valve operation (see Figure 2). of the Epsilon disconnect allows a convex ball to seat with a convex ball when the valve is opened (Step 1). This straight-through design allows the liquid to transfer through the adaptor and coupling with no reduction in flow rate (Step 2). Upon disconnection there are no cavities created in which product can nest,

and bearings. Also, no special tools are required for replacement of the seals.

In addition, the Epsilon was also engineered for easier maintenance when compared to a poppet-style design. The Epsilon allows for quick replacement of the transfer seal without any lockout. This helps minimize downtime when replacing the seals, stems

Other standard-setting features and benefits that enable the Epsilon Dry Disconnect Coupling to stand apart from the competition include:

When there is a demand for reliable transfer of hazardous, high-value chemicals, the ultimate choice is the Epsilon Dry Disconnect Coupling from OPW Engineered Systems.

As with anything with moving parts, from our knee and elbow joints to bearings in wheel assemblies, lubrication helps equipment operate smoothly and last longer. The performance of industrial machinery, such as compressors, depends largely on the reliability of its moving parts. A critical factor in achieving a highly reliable and long-lasting compressor is proper lubrication.

T

oday’s newer compressors use synthetic lubricants, such as diesters, polyglycols, polyalphaolefins, polyol esters and silicon based fluids to run efficiently, stay cool and extend product life. These newer lubricants are capable of handling wide temperature ranges and high flash points. Whatever lubricant you choose for your compressors should be well matched with the application and your airend’s moving parts and compressor’s seals.

a quality lubricant from a low-grade lubricant and can make a significant difference in the performance and longevity of your compressors.

and friction in the bearings, this type of lubricant helps the compressor run cooler and more efficiently, even when the operating temperature is high.

• Oxidation Stability Extends Compressor Lifespan - Lubricant is designed to extend the life of and maintain optimum performance of compressors, and a high quality nonfood grade rotary lubricant should last 8,000 to 16,000 hours at normal operating conditions.

For rotary screw compressors, fluid is injected into the compression chamber to lubricate the intermeshing rotors and associated bearings. The lubricant also takes away most of the heat caused by compression, and acts as a seal within the areas between the meshing rotors and rotor housing.

Lubrication Keeps Compressors Moving Fluid acts as a lubricant for the compressor’s meshing rotors, roller and plain bearings, as well as a sealant and coolant. Rotary screw air compressors use a fixed volume of air, that when compressed, increases in temperature, along with the increased pressure of the gas. This increase in temperature and exposure to compressed gas creates extreme demands on the lubricant. There are four key attributes that distinguish

• Protection Against Wear A high-grade lubricant will protect a compressor’s components, and in particular, a compressor’s rotors and bearings.

Ultra coolant

• Corrosion Protection - A quality lubricant will ensure the internal airend components and lubrication system is protected from corrosion. • Performance with Air and Water The way a superior lubricant performs in the presence of air and water will extend a compressor’s lifecycle. Lubricants Impact Compressor Components A quality lubricant will coat seals and allow parts to move smoothly, while simultaneously preventing the formation of varnish, extending the compressor reliability and lifespan. Ingersoll Rand Ultra Coolant is an example of a quality lubricant that provides varnish-free operation and dissolves residual varnish left by other lubricants. With a high thermal conductivity value allowing greater levels of absorption of the heat generated by the air compression cycle

Most oil-injected rotary screw compressors use the air pressure in the oil sump or separator, after the discharge of the airend, to circulate oil through a cooler and a filter prior to re-injection to the compression chamber. Alternatively, some designs may use an oil pump. Bearings at the end of each rotor carry the radial and axial thrust loads, and they are lubricated directly with the same filtered oil that is injected into the compression chamber. A similar configuration is used with built-in spiral and turn valve for capacity control. It is critical that the lubricant be maintained on a regular basis to ensure the compressor’s moving parts, seals and bearings are well protected against heat, friction and corrosion. Lubricant is injected to the compression chamber to mix with the incoming suction air and absorb heat from the compression cycle. The injection temperature and subsequent airend discharge temperature is controlled to avoid condensation of moisture. To avoid condensation of moisture that would mix with the lubricant, the discharge temperature must remain above the pressure dew point. it is important not to mix different types of base fluid chemistries and to use a product that matches the quality of the existing lubricant. Fluid analysis is an important part of a proactive maintenance program that can increase a compressor's reliability while revealing problems before they result in system failure. To protect compressor systems, Ingersoll Rand offers a fluid analysis program that will test any type of fluid from any type of compressor.

Ultra EL coolant

lubricant being circulated to flow through or bypass the oil cooler to maintain the desired temperature over a wide range of ambient temperatures. An appropriate temperature and viscosity of the lubricant is required for optimal lubrication, sealing and to avoid condensation in the oil sump. In addition to oil cooling, an air aftercooler is used to cool the discharged air and remove excess moisture. In the majority of oil flooded applications, an opportunity exists to recover the heat of compression either for heating or other types of energy recover. A proper routine maintenance schedule will ensure reliable compressor operation and maximize the lubricant effectiveness. This can be done by regularly sampling the lubricant. It is important to regularly check the lubricant analysis for potential metal wear components, additive content, acid level and water in the system, and if elevated levels are found, to take corrective actions. Other scheduled maintenance practices should include: checking the pressure drop across the oil filter and replacing when necessary, checking the connections between the hoses and the airend for leaks, and making sure to change the lubricant before it reaches its end-ofservice life. When topping off lubricant, 26 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

The High-cost of Low-cost Lubricants A quality non-food grade lubricant should last at least 8,000 hours or two years, whichever comes first, depending on the operating environment and how frequently the compressor is used and maintained. While the initial price of a low-cost lubricant will save money upfront, it will cost more in the long run as many low quality lubricants need to be changed up to eight times more often than a high quality lubricant. For example, Ingersoll Rand Ultra Extended Life (EL) is formulated to last up to 16,000 hours, which is twice as long as other rotary lubricants thus reducing the change-out frequency by half and ultimately reducing costs. It is important to be aware that low-cost often means lower quality. And when it comes to protecting your investment in compressors and maintaining them, it does not pay to skimp on the lifeblood of your compressor. This can lead to problems such as shorter fluid life, reduced component life, higher operating temperatures and reduced operating efficiencies, which can significantly shorten the compressor lifecycle. There are other reasons low-cost lubricants cost more over time. By purchasing a high-quality lubricant, operators can actually save money by reducing lubricant carryover and lowering the maintenance and energy costs that are inevitable with inferior lubricants. There are customers in the field that have chosen low-cost lubricants to save money and ultimately paid a high price in the end. These lubricants created a varnish around

the airend, coolers separator tank and oil filter, which eventually ruined the airend, requiring it to be replaced. The customer saved a few hundred dollars on the lubricant each month, but ended up spending $25,000 to replace the compressor’s airend. Not all Lubricants are Created Equal Quality is key when it comes to lubricants and the longevity of your compressor. A quality lubricant will help rotary screw compressors maintain their peak performance at a full range of operating temperatures and extend the lifecycle of the compressor. Many factors should be considered when selecting the appropriate lubricant for your application, including: lubricant properties, corrosion protection and service life. Below are three levels of lubricant quality that can be used to protect your airend and lubrication system. Standard Lubricant: A typical standard quality engineered synthetic lubricant will last two years or 8,000 hours, and will deliver up to 50 per cent lower carryover than mineral oils and polyalphaolefin (PAO). With a high thermal conductivity value, it will also provide better compressor performance and maintain an appropriate operating temperature. Extended Life Lubricant: Extended life lubricants can last up to 16,000 hours or three years, and are formulated for highdemand, multi-shift operations. This higherquality lubricant will reduce the frequency required for changing the lubricant, which reduces disposal costs. Extended life lubricants will also lower varnish buildup that leads to early component failure and additional cleaning for more frequent condensate drain clogging. Another advantage is better cooling capability so compressors are protected and operate more efficiently, even in high-ambient temperature environments. These lubricants are also highly efficient with anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation additives. Extended life lubricants should have a flash point at least of 262oC or of 505 oF, and a pour point of at least -30 oC or -53oF.

yeast or mold colony but also provides exceptional neutralization performance protecting the lubricant from spreading colonies. Food-grade lubricants can last 6,000 hours, depending on the application and operational conditions. They also resist the formation of foam, sludge, varnish and corrosive acids. A food-grade lubricant should have a flash point at least of 262 oC or 505 oF, and a pour point of -30 oC or -53 oF. Quality Lubricants Lead to Quality Performance To keep compressed air systems working at their best, quality lubricants that have been tested and rated for high-quality performance will pay off in the long run. When you depend on reliability and longterm performance, look no further than the quality of your lubricant—it is the best investment to reduce lubricant disposal costs, improve efficiency and extend the life of your compressor. Food-grade Lubricant: Concerns over food safety have never been higher and industry regulations have never been so stringent. Ingersoll Rand Ultra FG food-grade lubricant utilizes chemical technology that meet or exceed industry requirements for food contact while extending lubricant life. Food processing and pharmaceutical industries use several levels of food-grade lubricants, H1-H3, depending upon whether the lubricant will come in contact with the product. This lubricant should support all rotary screw compressors applications that require a USDA/NSF food-grade lubricant. Ultra FG is an Alkylated Naphthalene-based lubricant that offers improved temperature stability, detergent action and stabilizers to keep the lubricant from breaking down, and prevent acid formation and ingested material deposits from accumulating in the compressor. Unlike many food-grade lubricants, Ingersoll Rand Ultra FG has an antimicrobial additive that not only inhibits growth of an established bacteria,

Effective Boiler Insulation Keeps Your Boiler Energy-efficient and Safe

B

oilers, which are the heart of the heat generating process, are a key piece of equipment in factories, hospitals, universities, institutions and many medium and large buildings. Unfortunately, they can be a challenge to insulate with fiberglass or mineral wool for a number of reasons, including that the size of the boiler does not make it easy to wrap and cover, fibrous insulations cause corrosion issues, and it is not always possible to take the boiler offline for work to be done. Conductive and Radiant Heat Loss Heat emanates from boilers during operation, not only causing energy costs to go up, but also creating hot conditions in the room where they are located, making the working environment uncomfortable and unhealthy for those that need to work in the same room. Boilers are also notorious for being “hot areas” for employee burn risk. If you power your factory or facility building using steam, then I imagine you have seen rusting boilers or boilers where traditional insulation has become soggy and moldy. You may also have one of those hot boiler rooms that are like walking into the middle of a heat wave due to all the heat radiating

from the surface. This is something we see and solve all the time with a unique patented form of liquid insulation called Synavax™ Heat Shield™. The coatings, which are based upon nanoscience, are easily sprayed on to the boiler and they prevent corrosion, CUI, lower surface temperatures to a safe touch level and insulate for energy savings. And if you do not have a boiler, you may have other types of hot or cold surfaces, like hot water heaters, A/C ducts or processing tanks that could use similar insulating against heat loss or heat gain. Considerations when costing and choosing insulation materials for boilers or other heat or cold process equipment:

During a recent boiler trial at a large paper mill in the US, we showed the Plant Manager just how powerful our technology works. Even through heat was radiating around the small test patch where our EPX-H20 coating was applied on the end caps, which of course reduces the overall results, the thermal images below show that our coating resulted in a clear and substantial difference. Synavax Heat Shield EPX-H20 is an easy all-in-one thermal insulation coating that can be easily spray applied to boilers to provide both insulation and corrosion and CUI prevention. It does not require the equipment to be taken offline, you can spray while the surface is hot and feel it get cooler with every coat. It dries to the touch in approximately 1-4 hours, depending upon surface temperature.

Surface temperature reduction to safe touch

The CEO of Synavax recently visited a factory where hot boiler surfaces were an employee safety issue. Their boiler was at approximately 275 oF and they needed a safe touch solution right away. We sprayed on several coats of Heat Shield EPX-H20 coating and by the end of that same day, they were able to safely touch the boiler with no issues. The coating cures quickly, in approximately 1-2 hours, when applied to a hot surface, it is dry to touch. It was sprayed on while the boiler was in-service, so there is no downtime. Before insulation coating surface was 110 oC. After 6-coats, it was 57.8 oC.

Henateks Energy Savings Average 20 Per Cent Henateks is a textile manufacturer for Nike, Adidas, Tommy Hilfiger and other well-known US clothing brands. They discovered Synavax insulation technology many years ago and used it to coat their boilers, steam pipes, and textile dyeing machines. Their project payback was in just 7 months, annual savings averaged 1 million cubic meters of liquid natural gas, which at the time of their reporting in 2006-2008, equated to approximately $460,000 USD per year. Easy Application Insulation = Even More $ Savings When facility managers are comparing different types of heat insulation materials for their pipes, tanks, boilers and other heat process equipment, one type of savings that is not always factored in is the savings from easy to apply insulation or liquid insulation. While a wrap material may initially look less expensive on a per square meter or square foot basis, when elements such as longevity, extra benefits and ease of application are considered,

using an easy to apply insulation coating can drastically change the results of the cost comparison.

Easily fit application into your own schedule, you can divide application over days or weeks.

Older forms of insulation, like mineral wool and fiberglass have to be protected from exposure to dirt, dust and moisture, so they typically require an aluminium sheeting or cladding to be attached over the top of them. This covering is then affixed into place with either metal banding or screws and often cladding over joints or valves can be nearly impossible, so heat can be lost at the noninsulated bends or odd shaped areas of equipment that cannot easily be wrapped and covered. Cutting of the aluminium cladding is also factored into the labour to install, which can further raise the overall installed price.

Product can be sprayed on while equipment is in service, no costly downtime.

Added savings factors from having an easy to apply insulation, spray-on coating include: •

You have no more uninsulated “holes” in your thermal envelope due to elbows or valves.

You save money from being able to install with your own team rather than hire someone.

There is no expensive equipment needed.

One of the world’s largest textile manufacturers of industrial threads and yarns reviewed our liquid insulation coatings thoroughly, doing year-long trials at two of their factories and charting the energy savings. After insulating their dyeing machines (tanks that hold heated dye used to dye yarn) with the Heat Shield High Heat and EPX-H20 products, they first charted energy savings at the initial trial factory. The result? It was so unbelievably good that they extended the trial to a second factory. That factory also showed the same exceptional energy savings, which is typically an average of 20 per cent as reported by multiple industrial customers. After seeing the performance of Synavax coatings, they knew that they wanted to do a global sustainability project, insulating the dyeing tanks throughout 38 factories in 28 countries. After hearing that the coatings were an easy application insulation, they thought they could save even more on the massive global Chemical Products Finder | October-November 2016 | 29

energy saving project by having their own maintenance teams, many of which did routine painting at their factories,

install the coatings themselves, which not only saved the cost of hiring an outside company, it gave them more flexibility to fit the application in with other activities their teams had on the schedule. To facilitate a smooth process with so many different personnel in factories around the world our Sustainability Simplified™ team set up a 4-day “Train the Trainer” event at their US-based facility and they flew maintenance team captains from each global region to go through the application and make sure they understood everything well. After the training, they felt confident that they could go back to their respective regions and train the maintenance teams at each of the 38 factories for a successful project. The extra savings from doing it themselves contributed to their overall payback being less than one year. Liquid Insulation that Fits Your Equipment and Schedule So, if you have been putting off the

prospect of insulating your boiler, tanks or pipes because you did not want to deal with the scheduling or disruption that it might cause in your normal daily production cycle, you may want to check out easy to apply, nanotechnology-based liquid insulation coating. They may save you more than just the energy costs you are initially looking to achieve. ◘

Abaque Series peristaltic (hose) pumps meet the requirements of the chemicals industry. These self-priming pumps can run in forward or reverse and offer suction-lift capabilities to 25.5 ft, as well as the ability to run dry without adversely affecting performance, pressure and accuracy (no slip). Abaque pumps are available in ductile iron and SS construction, allowing higher discharge pressure up to 232 psi (16 bar). The Abaque Series’ pumping action is achieved by compression of a circular loop of elastomeric hose with two diametrically opposed rotating shoes. This rotational motion forces the fluid in the hose to move ahead of each shoe. When each shoe reaches the end of the loop, the reinforced hose immediately returns to its original shape, ensuring suction and priming, creating a strong vacuum pulling more fluid inside. This results in a pump that features higher performance, increased reliability and the ability to handle the toughest pumping challenges, including extremely abrasive and aggressive fluids. The hoses are available in natural rubber (highly resilient with excellent abrasion resistance and strength), Buna-N (highly wear resistant to oily products), EPDM (high chemical resistance when handling concentrated acids, alcohols and ketones) and Hypalon (resistant to chemicals, temperature extremes and ultraviolet light). Abaque pumps are available in 13 different sizes, with flow rates ranging from 15 to 77,000 LPH. WEIGHING SYSTEM A checkweigher is an automatic machine for checking the weight of packaged commodities. It is normally found at the off-going end of a production process and is used to ensure that the weight of a pack of the commodity is within specified limits. Any pack that are outside the tolerance are taken out of line automatically. A checkweigher incorporates a series of conveyor belts. Checkweighers are known also as belt weighers, in-motion scales, conveyor scales, dynamic scales and in-line scales. In filler applications, they are known as check scales. Typically, there are three belts or chain beds: an infeed belt that may change the speed of the package and to bring it up or down to a speed required for weighing. A weigh belt is typically mounted on a weight transducer, which can typically be a strain-gauge load cells or a servobalance (also known as a force-balance) or sometimes known as a split-beam. Some older machines may pause the weigh bed belt before taking the weight measurement. BIOCHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND ANALYSER BOD is a measure of the DO consumed

by

microorganisms

during the oxidation of biodegradable substances in waste waters.

A

high

BOD

would

therefore imply a higher depletion in the DO content. Water with high BOD if discharged into common streams and rivers, will starve the rest of the aquatic life. Wastewater is therefore treated to bring down the BOD value to levels below those prescribed by pollution regulatory bodies. The Forbes Marshall BioSens uses a revolutionary BOD measuring technique. This technique helps to determine the BOD value within 40 minutes in contrast to the 3 or 5 days required by the BOD3 and BOD5 methods. Isolated conductive filaments and a zero-maintenance conductive bronze rotor provide premium connectivity in harsh conditions. The Smart Ground Monitor alerts users in real time of non-optimal contact between the filaments and shaft. Contact is measured through the Smart Terminal that comes standard on every Smart CDR and Smart MGS. Smart Shaft Grounding solutions meet NEMA MG1 31.4.4.3 and CSI 23 05 13 specifications and are available in standard sizes or custom engineered solutions.

Trace oxygen analysers are essentially leak detectors. Portable trace oxygen analysers have the additional requirement that they should not be affected while being connected and disconnected to systems using tubing that is full of the very oxygen the analyser is supposed to measure. The AIM 1000RS uses a special version of the AMI patented Cell Block specifically modified to deal with these problems. There is a special 4-way sample selection valve built in to the block that seals off the sensor when not in use, while allowing the sample to bypass the sensor through the needle valve and flowmeter. This allows the tubing used to connect to the sample source to be flushed out before exposing the sensor to the sample of interest, thus allowing the sensor to respond immediately when the valve is turned On without a long comedown time and safeguarding the sensor from excessive air exposure. The design also allows for simple and foolproof gas connections using a single quick disconnect fitting with no breaking or making of tubing fittings, and no complicated sequence of plugging and unplugging connections required. As usual with AMI analysers, the sensor itself is immediately accessible behind the front panel The analyser can be used with flammable samples. It is battery powered with up to 350 hours of life, and it contains a datalogger so that it can be left monitoring a gas system for several days in order tocatch intermittent oxygen spikes. MASS FLOW CONTROLLER

ORB PILOT FOR REACTION SCALE-UP

The MCRH can accommodate flow rates of up to 5000 slpm, without compromising speed or precision of gas control. The highly stable controller manages industrial processes with more chaotic upstream fluctuations, such as control of industrial combustion gases or mass flow into food and packaging processes. The MCRH 5000 slpm precisely and rapidly controls mass flow rate, volumetric flow rate or back pressure of gases in high flow processes. To overcome the poor turndown ratio and slow response of existing methods (such as interlinking a meter with an external valve) Alicat designed a new flow geometry. This new design accommodates the higher flow rates, with a low pressure drop of 14.1 psig at full scale. A dual valve design enables a fast 100 millisecond control response time without significantly raising instrument power requirements. The instrument’s Gas Select firmware includes a library of up to 130 preloaded gases, user selectable in the field. The MCRH 5000 slpm can be programmed with the instrument’s pushbutton menus and onboard display or via remote connection. Digital communications options include RS-232 or RS-485 Serial, Modbus, or PROFIBUS, as well as analog 0-5 V DC, 1-5 V DC and 0-10 V DC or 4-20 mA.

HUMANOID ROBOTIC HAND The German Aerospace Centre (DRL) has developed a new robotic hand in conjunction with the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). The new DLR-HIT Hand II has five fingers, each with four joints and three degrees of freedom and is smaller and lighter. Four fingers are required for clasping conical parts, and a thumb is used as an outer support. The mechanical range of movement must be properly controlled and monitored to enable the hand to be used fully. The motors are fitted directly into the fingers. This means that particular attention has to be paid to the control processor’s information with positioning and operating data. Every finger joint is therefore fitted with a selfdeveloped non-contacting angle sensor and a torque sensor. Due to the application, both sensors must resolve very highly. A high-speed bus transmits the data flow. Rapid feedback for comparing target and actual value is crucial for the function of the controller, particularly in precise and elicit applications. Therefore, aside from the data volume, speed of transfer is also vital. Each finger needs several drives that can all be controlled separately. Maxon motor’s EC 20 flat drives meet several key requirements. The motors, including Hall sensors, create a unit that is only 10.4 mm long with an outer dia of 21.2 mm. Each motor weighs 15 g. They are mounted with harmonic drive gears from the HDUC 05 range, which have the same dia. The 3 W motors are available in a 12 or 24 V version and provide max torque of 8.04 mNm. Good dynamic behaviour and preloaded ball bearings ensure precise response behaviour of control commands, including changing the direction of rotation. The motors idle at 9,300 rpm. INDUSTRIAL ROTARY DRYERS Saka Engg Systems Pvt Ltd offers industrial rotary dryers consisting of a relatively long cylindrical shell, which ranges from 0.6 to 5-m in dia and from 5 to 30-m long, supported by two riding rings running on a set of rollers (rotation speed up to 25 RPM). They are slightly inclined from the horizontal, the slope enables material to move from the feed to the discharge end under gravity. They are suitable for a wide range of materials with varying size and composition. The feed rate ranges from less than 1 to 500-tonne per hour. Internal lifters, or flights are used to lift, distribute and transport the material. This produces a shower or cascade of wet feed material through the hot gas stream, which promotes evaporation of the moisture and breaks up lumps to produce a more uniformly dried material. The hot air is introduced either at the feed end such that it moves in the same direction as the material (co-current) or at the discharge end such that it moves in the opposite direction (counter-current). The co-current direct-heat rotary dryer is the most common, wet material in contact with the hot gas stream as its highest temperature, which causes rapid evaporation of surface moisture. As it progresses through the dryer, heat energy is lost to the material it is drying and it leaves the dryer at a comparatively low temperature. In co-current dryers, the initial heat transfer is high, which causes a considerable drop in temperature thus preventing overheating of the material and the dryer itself. The final dried product is discharged with the gas stream at its lowest temperature, which ensures the moisture content can be readily controlled. Counter current dryers are more suitable for material that must be dried to very low moisture contents or where the last traces of moisture are difficult to remove. Rotary dryers are commonly used in the minerals industry to dry a range of commodities including clay, gypsum, kaolin, limestone, mineral sand, potash and silica sand. L&T ties up with Chiyoda Corporation for Emission Control Technology

Kribhco and MoroccoÊs OCP to set up Fertiliser Plant in Krishnapatanam

Mumbai, India: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced that it has entered into a long-term technical licence agreement with Japan’s Chiyoda Corporation for its Chiyoda Thoroughbred 121TM (CT-121TM) flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) technology. The agreement grants L&T limited rights to undertake EPC of CT-121TM FGD systems.

Andhra Pradesh, India: Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (Kribhco) and Morocco’s OCP has announced that it has formed a 50:50 joint venture firm to develop a large-scale Greenfield NPK fertiliser plant in Krishnapatanam, Andhra Pradesh.

As per the announcement of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued in December 2015, new limits on sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions has been presented for coal-based thermal power plants in India. The move, which makes Indian emission norms among the most severe in the world, has called for compulsory installation of FGD systems in upcoming power plants, comprising those currently under construction and many that are at present operational. “As a responsible corporate citizen, L&T is dedicated to covering emissions and has always conformed to the relevant government norms. The agreement with Chiyoda Corporation is yet another major step in that direction,” said Shailendra Roy, CEO & MD, L&T Power and whole-time director (power, heavy engineering & defence), L&T. Ryosuke Shimizu, Director & Senior Vice President (Technology Development, Investment & Project Operations), Chiyoda Corporation, added, “We are very happy to contribute to India’s development of energy and environment in concord with our own technology.” The CT-121TM FGD process is a distinctive technology developed by Chiyoda in which sulphur dioxide is captivated from flue gas generated by coal-fired, oil-fired and other types of boilers and removed as gypsum. Unlike conventional processes in which the re-agent slurry is sprayed on flue gas, the CT-121TM process uses Chiyoda’s unique absorber, the Jet Bubbling Reactor (JBR), in which the flue gas is blown into the reagent slurry, forming a fine bubble bed where SO2 is absorbed, oxidised by injected air, and then neutralised by ground limestone slurry. This technology is extremely proficient, facilitating low-cost removal of flue gas SO2. Furthermore, it safeguards that the plant remains compact and easy to maintain. 56 | October-November 2016 | Chemical Products Finder

The plant, to be built with a preliminary investment of nearly $ 230 million, will have an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonne (MT) of NPK fertilisers. Moreover, the project also comprises the development of logistical infrastructure in the region. “Planned JV is a distinctive example of global cooperation between two prominent organisations joining hands for making available phosphate based fertiliser products to Indian farmers by channelizing their relevant strengths. Farmers of the country shall benefit with continual supply of several NPK grade products based on best quality phosphate in the world,” said Dr Chandra Pal Singh, Chairman, Kribhco. Fertilisers are one of 25 core sectors recognised for Make in India campaign by the Government of India. The JV will provide quality home-grown NPK fertilisers to Indian farmers by leveraging on Kribhco’s deep knowledge of market and farmers requirement, as well as OCP’s world-class industrial competences and expertise. Mostafa Terrab, chairman and CEO, OCP, stated, “OCP has always been, and remains fully dedicated to contribute to India’s agricultural development. We believe large scale local investments designed to respond to farmer’s specific needs is the crucial ingredient to successful agricultural ecosystem development. As one of the major cooperatives in India, Kribhco is a brilliant partner to develop a farmeroriented agricultural input joint venture. This partnership is designed to be truly a win-win project for all the stakeholders involved but foremost for India’s agriculture and principally for Indian farmers.” OCP-Kribhco joint-venture is anticipated to be the first step in a wider strategic cooperation between both groups that could include Kribhco’s investment in a phosphoric acid unit in Morocco.

RIL’s profit after tax (without exceptional items) was up by 43.1 per cent at ` 7,206 crore as against ` 5,035 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. The company’s petrochemicals business revenue for 2Q FY17 registered year-on-year (YoY) growth of 5.6 per cent to ` 22,422 crore, largely due to rise in volumes of fibre intermediates and polyester products. Petrochemicals segment EBIT was at a record level of ` 3,417 crore, supported by strong volume growth and firm margin environment. Robust demand growth during 2Q FY17 across polyester products (+14 per cent) and polymer products (+10 per cent) underpinned segment earnings. Petrochemicals segment EBIT margins expanded to a 14 quarter high of 15.2 per cent during 2Q FY17 as product deltas held up well despite lower prices. According to the company, the domestic market for polymers continued to witness a healthy growth rate. During 1H FY17, domestic polymer demand was higher by 11 per cent YoY. PVC demand witnessed the highest growth rate of 20 per cent among all polymers; driven by strong off-take from downstream converters PP demand was higher by 7 per cent aided by good demand from raffia packaging, non-woven, and fibre filament and appliances sector.
