More Than One Valve Or Pump Choice for Every Application With hundreds of different types of valves in the industry today and thousands of manufacturers globally how do you know which is the best product for your process? Chances are that there may be several good alternatives that could serve you well with a high mean time between failure (MTBF). But the solution is not always 100 per cent clear. The reason there is not a one size fits all. Solution is that every process has variables. The variables can be numerous and certain types of valves will perform better in one set of variables than another. It is often not as simple as just the pressure, temperature and the medium.
P
ressure, temperature and medium are excellent starting points though. But what about other variables?
Other factors that may impact your valve selection may be: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Specific gravity of medium Percent solids Vertical valve installation Isolation required in both flow directions Minimum, normal and maximum flow Manual, pneumatic, electric or hydraulic Supply air pressure provided Size of valve Threaded Connections Velocity of flow Percent solids Horizontal valve installation Isolation required in only one direction Concentrations of chemicals contained Required tightness of valve Voltage of electricity provided Pipeline material in which the valve be installed Flanged connections
The valve manufacturer or representative who asks a high number of questions and requires specific information will probably be the ones that you should trust. By capturing as much information as possible hopefully leads to less headaches and troubles for the owner. Acceptable MTBF varies from process owner to process owner and also in various applications. In some brutal processes, a valve that needs to be
repaired every six months may be acceptable. In certain processes, if a valve fails or needs repair every 10 years then that valve can be considered poor quality or the wrong choice for the application. If your process is clean and non-corrosive you may choose from a wide variety of inexpensive ball valves. Even when there are corrosive chemicals, you still choose a ball valve with different alloys that are able to survive in corrosive chemicals. Ball valves are produced by the thousands and are widely utilized in a high number of industries. Dealing with Abrasive Mediums What choices do process owners have when they have an extremely abrasive slurry? The valve selection quickly becomes more limited. Of course the owner can decide to standardize and stick with a ball valve or similar. However, by doing so they are likely to face frequent repairs or replacements of that valve. If the slurry is 35 per cent solids, lime slurry, or 60 per cent minerals slurry then the options for a valve with long MTBF becomes even more limited. For instance, lime slurry is unique slurry utilized in a multitude of industries such as chemical processing, mining, pulp and paper, power production, iron and steel, and many more. Lime causes many troubles for various types of valves because it combines the abrasive aspect of the slurry as well as the tendency to scale inside the pipeline and on stationary surfaces. Lime does not dissolve in solution but rather is a

suspended solid. It is necessary to keep lime slurry in motion or the particles will settle out of solution and create more process problems. Valves that have areas for material accumulation will likely have problems dealing with lime slurry. For instance, with a ball valve, the metal ball will become coated with a build-up of scale and this scale will be dragged through the Teflon seats when the valve is opened or closed. This action will begin to destroy the Teflon seats and the valve’s ability to continue to close tightly. Also the body cavity area of the ball valve will collect build-up that will force operating torques continuously higher. This can lead to the valve actuator stalling and ball valve stem breakage. In slurries containing minerals of up to 60-80 per cent solids, a standard valve will not be likely to survive the abrasive nature of the medium. So process owners might consider different alternatives than their standard valves. Two types of valves that are suited for abrasive slurries are rubber-lined knife gate valves and pinch valves. Pinch valves utilize a rubber sleeve that lines the entire inside of the valve body. This rubber sleeve completely isolates the internal moving components during normal operation. In most On/Off applications the valve sleeve is 100 per cent full bore and has no areas for material accumulation. A pinch valve is also one of the only selfcleaning valves available. Any material build-up on the interior of the rubber sleeve is cleaned when the valve is closed. The rubber sleeve is flexed with

each opening and closing thus breaking up scale and the build-up material is flushed downstream. Also, having all moving components of the valve isolated from the process medium insures smooth trouble-free operation. Rubber-lined slurry knife gates also use rubber sleeves to combat extreme wear caused by abrasion. Many rubber-lined knife gates incorporate a flushing port on the bottom of the valve. This allows built-up material to be pushed out the bottom of the valve to allow for troublefree operation. With scaling and highly sticky medium, the process owner might be wise to use a Teflon-coated knife gate to prevent and allow easy release of any scaling material on the gate. In a large majority of mineral-based slurries the Teflon-coated knife is not required. A secondary seal in the valve body helps to clean the gate of material build-up.
Figure 2. Flowrox SKW Rubber Lined Knife Gate
Another unique valve is a rotary disc valve. This product operates similar to a knife gate valve with a linear operation of the closing mechanism. However, instead of a metal gate used for closing, it utilizes a rotating disc. The disc rotates in a circular fashion on every opening and closing. The advantage is that the sealing surface is constantly being rotated so that the slurry does not continuously impact a single location every opening and closing. The disc secures tightly into a wedge upon closing and can incorporate rubber and polyurethane sealing in the seating area. This type of valve is suited for extremely

high-pressure slurries up to 1,500 psig and higher temperatures. Pumps like valves face the same types of challenges. Pump selection can be much more costly compared to valves if the incorrect pump is chosen. Pumps are dynamic and a working piece of machinery. If the pump is not running then the process is not flowing. Selection of a pump with a low MTBF may result in numerous process stoppages per year and costly maintenance and repairs. Similar to the above discussion of valves, which pump should you choose when dealing with abrasive and high per cent solid slurries? There are multiple alternatives but let’s examine a few well-known styles. The first highly-utilized type is centrifugal pump. They are very good for slurries up to approximately 40 per cent solids. In most cases these pumps will have rubber -lined internals and rubberlined impellers. Certain manufacturer’s do in fact manufacture and sell pumps for slurries up to 50-60 per cent solids. However, process owners may learn that by pumping such thick slurries with this style of pump may increase repair frequency and repair costs quite substantially. Progressive cavity pumps can be a viable alternative as well. This type of pump can vary substantially regarding the per cent solids it can handle and is greatly influenced by the nature of the medium being pumped. For instance, with a waste water sludge this type of pump can handle

between 8-20 per cent solids. However, if the medium is homogenous then it may be capable of up to 65 per cent solids. One key downside to a progressive cavity pump is that it cannot be allowed to run dry or damage will occur to the rotor and stator. New designs incorporate even-wall stator technology and 2D and 3D rotor geometry. These newer designs can result in up to 17 per cent greater hydraulic efficiency and more pressure produced per stage. The result is progressive cavity pump that runs at lower RPMs resulting in less wear and greater pressure produced in a smaller footprint. One other new advancement is the ability to change the mechanical seal without disassembling the rotor and stator or the motor and frame. This can save numerous maintenance hours and allow a mechanical seal to be removed and replaced in approximately one hour without removing the pump from its location. The final pump product that is capable of very abrasive mediums up to 80 per cent solids is the peristaltic pump. This style of pump can run dry for extended periods without damage to pump. By pumping
Figure 5. Shoe design Peristaltic Pump.

80 per cent solids, a massive amount of water can be eliminated when trying to move mineral-based slurries. If a process owner moves a significant amount of minerals or slurries then the entire process plant can be downsized by pumping 80 per cent solids versus 30 per cent solids. A peristaltic pump also has the ability to perform suction lift applications. The nice feature of a peristaltic pump is that the only two normal wear components are the rubber hose and a small amount of glycerin in the housing. It is important to mention that not all peristaltic pumps are similar. One style incorporates two metal shoes that compress the rubber hose. This style generates a significant amount of heat and requires a massive amount of glycerin in the pump housing to dissipate the heat that is generated. Also, this older shoe style design compresses the hose twice per revolution, which results in early hose failure. New peristaltic designs incorporate a single roller that rolls over the rubber hose only once per revolution. This
Figure 6 Flowrox LPP-T Rolling Peristaltic Pump
design eliminates the requirement for massive amounts of glycerin in the pump housing. Also, since the rubber hose is only compressed once every 360 degree revolution, the hose typically lasts 2-5 times longer than shoe design peristaltic pumps. The single roller design allows peristaltic pump availability to be significantly greater than old designs Conclusions When dealing with abrasive process mediums, users may have to invest more time and effort to find the best products to survive in these processes. The time spent trialing various products may reap some significant rewards. Process downtime and frequent costly repairs can be minimized. Certain types of valves and pumps can result in repair costs in excess of $100,000 per year. As technology advances there may be better alternatives that can eliminate or severely minimize these costs. When dealing with slurries of an abrasive nature, total cost of ownership (TCO) can have an extreme impact on the operating cost bottom line. â—˜

We co-ordinated this presentation with our authorized integrator P I Alimentarios GARA (specialized in automation and installation) to make the presentation of our hybrid powder mixer (HPM).

Marketing Initiative
• The footprint of the equipment was limited because of the small space available. • Last but not the least, the price of the hybrid mixer should be competitive compared to other solutions of other competitors.
The Alfa Laval Hybrid Powder Mixer at a customer's plant
The first step was to ask for the Central Support in order to check the application and optimize the selection of the most suitable HPM.
It was an important goal due to mainly the following reasons:
According to the recommendations of our Central Support, Model HPM-S15 was quoted.
• We had to show that our hybrid mixer is more accurate than the existing mixer from Inoxpa.
With the HPM-S15 we covered the main demand of the customer and optimized the price.
• We had to add value to the actual way to mix the solids (sugar and other additives) with water, improving the performance and also the quality of the final product.
Our authorized integrator P I Alimentarios GARA supplied the rest of the valves (Alfa Laval single seat valves) and part of the installation where the HPM was integrated.
It was the first sale of this kind of equipment. In fact it was the first HPM-S15 supplied from our factory. After more than 6 commissioning we can our HPM-S15 is working performing much better equipment.
months of assure that properly and that the old
Because of this excellent result, we are trying with the rest of factories of the company in Spain to introduce other equipment as Isomix that can combine ◘ with the HPM. PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE Pressure relief valve is a self-operating valve that is used to relieve pressure by allowing the pressurized fluids (liquids. gas or gas liquid mixtures) to flow from an auxiliary passage out of the vessel or process system. Pressure relief valves are designed to protect chemical feed systems from overpressure damage caused by defective equipment or deadheading. When the set pressure exceeded, the pressure relief valve is forced to open and the portion of the fluid is diverted to the auxiliary route. As the fluid is diverted, the pressure inside the vessel or process system will drop and once it reaches the valve’s resetting pressure, the valve will close. This will protect the vessel or process system from damage due to abnormal excess pressure conditions. Valves are available in 1/4” to 2” sizes in PP, PVC, PVDF, SS-304 and SS-316. Enhancing Capacity of Existing Column Energy conservation is the absolute need of the hour in today’s world. Engineers thus look for ways and means to get the best out of the given systems. So, when it comes to a Packed Tower then a Liquid Distributor and Feed Device play an indispensable role to get an optimised solution.
W
e are in times where energy conservation is the absolute need of the hour – as much for mother earth’s survival, as our very own. One thus looks for ways and means to get the best out of the given systems, without changing much and with least possible investment. So, when it comes down to more for less, in a packed tower system, the first thing which comes to the mind of any engineer seeking to increase capacity of the plant is to go for a larger diametre column.
of the key ones are – feed devices that introduce the fluids inside the tower, distributor for distribution of fluids, bed limiters as an insurance to retain the packing within its intended location, support plate for supporting the packing, collector trays to take partial or total draw offs, etc. (See Figure 1) Here, we shall examine at length the most critical internals to bring out their salient features, namely the feed devices and the distributors.
However, when the user is introduced to high capacity packing (be it random or structured), which saves one from the need to change the tower itself, the user is delighted beyond expectation and starts believing that the problem is solved. Therein lies the fallacy, as while high capacity packing is a good solution, it is definitely not a complete one. While selecting mass transfer equipment, one needs to be correct, and often the cumulative accuracy lies in the finer details.

Let us examine the typical sequence adopted by the designer of packed tower system. Once the simulation of the system is done and the stages required for carrying out the separation or absorption is ascertained, the next focus is on selection of the packing. One assumes that once the packing is selected, the task is done and the results are assured. In particular, the confidence gets compounded especially when one plans to employ the high capacity packing over the conventional type. But, for the best results, high capacity packing also demands deployment of complementary well designed high performance internals for achieving the optimum results. Inside a packed tower, all hardware other than packing are known as internals and some

Features
Liquid and Gaseous Feed Devices (Pre-distributor) The first and foremost are the feed devices that inject the liquid at the very top of the tower or the gas/vapour at the very bottom of it. These have to be designed carefully so that they are not only compatible with the mouth of the external pipelines and their orientation for ease of installation but also the next tower internal to which they introduce the fluid to. The top liquid feed device feeds the top distributor. It must be so sized that the optimum pressure is maintained in it to prevent any back flow, while at the same time ensuring the liquid reaches the far end and is released at the optimum velocity. They must further be designed in conjunction with the distributor so that the liquid introduced from the feed pipe does not fall atop the gas risers located on the distributor below. Similarly, we have gas or vapour feed device at the bottom of the tower. Though these are relatively less sensitive to operation than liquid feed device, nevertheless, they can create tower malfunction if poorly designed. These are placed below the support plates or support grids that hold up the packing or sometimes below the collector trays. Care must be taken in their design to ensure that the gas/vapour do not enter with such a velocity that they blow away or dislocate the tower internal above the feed device. Also, they must be so located from the elevation point of view, that they allow some time for the gas/ vapour exiting it, to adequately spread before encountering the equipment next in line above.
Figure 2: Liquid feed pipes, vapour feed pipes and plates
collects the liquid from the liquid feed pipe above and typically allows (not always) the liquid to build up into a reservoir on its deck or in its troughs. This provides a calming zone of sorts for the liquid, before allowing it to exit from the openings. The liquid which was until now constantly moving (horizontally) at a higher velocity, is somewhat made stationary in the distributor, relatively speaking. It also ensures the liquid, as far as possible, moves slowly downwards (vertically) only, as it exits the distributor
under the hydrostatic head of the built up reservoir. Thus an attempt is made to ensure a steady state flow downwards and no liquid gradient is formed on the distributor. The said liquid reservoir also cushions the flow from the exit openings, from the possible vigorous flow variations in the feed lines and the feed device above the distributor. The idea is to distribute the liquid evenly across the cross-section of the tower, with as far as possible, each exit opening of the distributor receiving the same amount
Liquid Distributors (Main Distributor) The liquid distributor is extremely critical and difficult to design. The distributor, as the name suggests, distributes the liquid and irrigates the packed section below it through delicately placed and sized openings from which the liquid exits out and on to the packing below. Before the same is done, the distributor

of liquid stream. To prevent entrainment or upward carry-over of the liquid by the force of the gas/vapour, separate channels are provided on the distributor for gas/vapour flowing upwards. When the distributor is located between two beds for collecting the liquid raining from the packed bed above and then redistributing the liquid to the packed bed below, it is called a ‘redistributor’. (See different types of distributors in Figure 3) Importance of Liquid Distribution Packed tower design is based on the fundamental concept of equal liquid and gas superficial velocity across the column section. The pressure drop across the packing provides an impetus for the upward flowing gas to become uniformly distributed across the column area. The liquid flows down the packed bed by gravity and unlike a gas, the liquid has poorer cross-mixing tendencies. It is therefore imperative to manage and ensure very uniform liquid distribution at the top of the bed. Distributors are internals installed above a packed bed, which perform the job of providing a finite liquid distribution over the packed bed. A distributor allows liquid to be distributed over the packed bed in discrete streams. This can be done either through orifices or V-weirs located on/in the distributor. Distributors also provide a separate passage for the upward flowing gas. Once liquid enters the packed bed, the packing tends to redistribute the liquid by virtue of dispersion and after some height, the liquid profile adapts to the natural distribution tendency of the packings, which generally, is worse than the initial liquid distribution provided by the distributor. Because of this, liquid distribution in packed beds tends to break down after fixed heights and liquid redistributors are provided to collect all the down flowing liquid and redirect it uniformly into next packed bed. A packed bed irrigated by a very good distributor allows one to realise the full separation potential (number of stages) of the packed bed.
Categories of Liquid Distributors The liquid distributors are divided into two broad categories - gravity type and pressure type. The models under gravity type feed are pan type, deck type, trough type, V-weir type, etc. The models under pressure type feed are spray nozzle type, pipe arm distributor type, etc. Distributor Testing • Liquid distributor testing is also done to ensure the proper distribution. It is found that the tested distributors at shop facility also perform very well in actual service condition. To carry out the distributor testing appropriate test facility shall be available with sufficient size for entire distributor. • The test facility should comprise of the following features: -Feed system with different pumps -Freshwater inlet and recirculation system -Flowmeter system -Support structure for mounting and levelling of distributors -Collecting funnel, measuring vessels, scale, stop watch, etc -For testing purpose, water is used as testing fluid Pre Arrangements Testing

from multiple point is collected using funnels and measuring vessels and the coefficient of variation is checked. • The large distributors can be checked partly considering the size of distributor. A distributor test facility with up to 500 m 3/hr (17,500 ft 3/hr) and up to 8 metre (26 ft) diametre testing is not uncommon. Design of Redistributor

• Select suitable type of distributor/ redistributor based on various parametres like column diameter, service, flowrates, range of flowrates to be handled, installation feasibility, fouling service, etc, suitable type, eg, deck, pan, trough, flow multipliers, weir, with/without drip tubes, etc, is selected. • Once the type is finalised number of irrigation points are decided based on the type of the packing. More numbers of points are provided for packings with higher surface area. Moreover, traditional packings require comparatively lesser number of distribution points than modern/third generation packing. Selection also depends upon type of packing, viz, random or structured. ◘
Distributor
After liquid distributor is mounted on test ring, it should be levelled properly. The test instrument shall be calibrated. After starting the test system, keeps the system running for a minimum of 15 minutes to ensure steady flow from feed pipe or pre-distributor. Testing Methods • For good performance of liquid distributor within given operating range, it is tested for maximum and minimum liquid loads. Checking of the liquid head is done across the distributor/different channels of distributors. • When specific guarantees are to be maintained, then actual outflow

truly indigenous design with form and features comparable to international PLC brands, ECIL's PLC is IEC 61131-2/3 compliant and amenable to independent verification and validation. Programmable Logic Controllers commonly known as PLCs are used basically to automate the process control in chemical plants, steel plants, nuclear plants, transportation and building automation , etc. PLCs have three basic functions of control, input and output. The PLC has a control programme resident in the memory and the programmes are executed as part of repetitive process referred to as PLC Scan Cycle. PLC Scan Cycle begins with the PLC reading the status of its input. The application programme is executed and based on this information the values of output are generated. The PLC then performs internal diagnostics and communication tasks. The scan cycle gets completed by setting the outputs and the cycle starts all over again. The cycle time of a PLC scan depends on the size of PLC programme, the number of I/0s and the amount of data exchanged during communication phase. PLC mainly performs function such as logic sequencing, timing, counting and arithmetic control and process control.

Products available include liquid and gas flow measurement and level/distance detection, while additional ultrasonic assessments can be made including the identification of fluid quality and chemical concentration.
Siemens Ltd offers the Ruggedcom RX1400, a smart multiprotocol network node with integrated firewall. The device combines the functionality of Ethernet switch and router with various connectivity options for Wide Area Networks (WAN). Among the device’s various applications is its use for secure communication of metering data to a Smart City’s Control Center via a wired Network or a wireless Wide Area Network (2G or 3G). It is also ideal for oil and gas facilities, substations of power distribution systems, switch cabinets for traffic and rail transport control as well as applications in any harsh industrial environment. The router is primarily designed for communication via commercial long-term evolution (LTE) networks, where it leverages the extensive advanced LTE functions for Quality of Service/QoS management. The router’s dual SIM card slot allows automatic failover between mobile service providers in case of network failures, if necessary. Users can equip the device with two optional fiber-optic SFPs (Small Form-factor Pluggable) to establish wired communication connections where needed.
The latest example of Morgan’s class-leading expertise in harsh environment technology comes in the form of its ultrasonic level sensors, which are applicable to a surprisingly large and diverse range of settings. These include automotive, aerospace, rail, marine, medical, pharmaceutical, industrial, chemical, oil and gas and food/brewing applications. One of the reasons why ultrasonic sensors are so popular when used with liquids is their inherent tolerance to contamination from particles, ice crystals, foam and fluid opacity. REFRIGERATED TYPE AIR DRYER Mellcon offers various types of dryers for removal of moistures from compressed air and gases. For various industrial applications a dew point of the order of +4 oC at line pressure is sufficient for the smooth operation and production. In such case, Mellcon offer refrigerated type dryer, which is a reliable and economical way of eliminating the moisture. In this system the air is cooled down to +2 oC.and then moisture contents are separated out from it. The cooled air then cools the incoming air to the dryer through a heat exchanger and gets heated in return. Thus the air leaving the refrigerated air dryer will have a dew point of +2 oC to +4 oC at line pressure, which is equivalent to –18 o to –22 oC at atmospheric pressure. SCALING WATCH Flowrox offers scaling watch, which is of high relevance to oil and gas pipelines supplying the energy industry. The Flowrox scaling watch is of instrumental value to energy companies seeking to reduce or eliminate pipeline damage by monitoring and controlling the buildup of asphaltene depositions and paraffin wax that can create choke points that reduce the flow of heavy oils. Beyond the instrument’s ability to monitor deposition in the pipeline, the Flowrox scaling watch also has the ability to provide multiphase flow images, such as percentages of oil, sea water or sand. Flowrox’s patented algorithm monitors depositions with a 3D view of the pipe, tracks data on buildup growth rates and reports the available volume within the pipe—all leading to a proactive maintenance approach, rather than having to repair or replace a pipe after the damage. Thanks to its ability to show pipeline deposits and the downward trend in pipeline capacity available, the Flowrox scaling watch offers a unique perspective on proactive maintenance that can prompt pipeline operators to take corrective action. Common compounds found in oil pipelines that can lead to damaging buildup include a variety of resins, hydrocarbons and paraffin which increase the viscosity and decrease the mobility of fluids during the transportation process.

New 'Designer Carbon' Boosts Battery Performance California, USA: Stanford University scientists have created a new carbon material that significantly boosts the performance of energystorage technologies. A new 'designer carbon' invented by Stanford "We have developed a scientists significantly improved the power 'designer carbon' that delivery rate of this supercapacitor. is both versatile and controllable. Our study shows that this material has exceptional energy-storage capacity, enabling unprecedented performance in lithium-sulfur batteries and supercapacitors," said Zhenan Bao, senior author of the study and professor of chemical engineering, Stanford. According to Bao, the new designer carbon represents a dramatic improvement over conventional activated carbon, an inexpensive material widely used in products ranging from water filters and air deodorisers to energy-storage devices. "A lot of cheap activated carbon is made from coconut shells. To activate the carbon, manufacturers burn the coconut at high temperatures and then chemically treat it," Bao said. The activation process creates nano-sized holes, or pores, that increase the surface area of the carbon, allowing it to catalyse more chemical reactions and store more electrical charges. Turning paper industry waste into chemicals Schloss Laxenburg, Austria: A new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change shows that, when looking at the production site alone, growing biofuel crops can have a significant impact on climate depending on location and crop type. The study is the first geographically explicit life cycle assessment to consider the full range of greenhouse gases emissions from vegetation and soil carbon stock to nitrogen fertiliser emissions in all locations in the world. In the last couple of years, research has begun to raise questions about the sustainability of biofuels. Life cycle assessments—a method that calculates the environmental impact of a product through its entire production and use cycle—have returned uncertain results on biofuels, and new research has also begun to consider carbon emissions caused by land use change. Zurich, Switzerland: Material scientists at ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam have developed a new type of sensor ETH researchers’ miniature CO2 sensor: that can measure carbon dioxide chip with a thin layer of the polymernanoparticle composite. (CO 2). Compared with existing sensors, it is much smaller, has a simpler construction, requires considerably less energy and has an entirely different functional principle. The new sensor consists of a recently developed composite material that interacts with CO2 molecules and changes its conductivity depending on the concentration of CO2 in the environment. ETH scientists have created a sensor chip with this material that enables them to determine CO2 concentration with a simple measurement of electrical resistance. The basis of the composite material is a chain-like macromolecule (polymer) made up of salts called ionic liquids, which are liquid and conductive at room temperature. The name of the polymers is slightly misleading as they are called «poly(ionic liquid)s» (PIL), although they are solid rather than liquid. Read more on https://www.ethz.ch/
Tiny Semiconducting Crystals Show Promise for Solar Cell Architectures Washington DC, USA: Ames Laboratory scientists discovered semiconducting nanocrystals that function not only as stellar light-to-energy converters but also as stable light emitters. Honing methods to fine-tune optimal characteristics of materials that convert light to energy may lead to more efficient materials, as performance depends critically on composition, crystallinity, and morphology. These perovskites could be used in the construction of new solar cell architectures, as well as for light-emitting devices and single particle imaging and tracking. Perovskite materials, such as CH 3NH 3PbX 3 (X = I, Br), are known to display intriguing electronic, lightemitting, and chemical properties. Researchers at the Ames Laboratory synthesised a series of perovskite nanocrystals with different morphologies (i.e., dots, rods, wires, plates, and sheets) by using different solvents and capping ligands. The Ames Laboratory team tested the nanocrystals to explore their morphology, growth, properties, and stability under various conditions. Characterisation studies of photoluminescence, like that seen with glow-in-the-dark paint, found that the rods and wires showed higher photoluminescence and longer photoluminescence lifetimes compared to other shapes.
