WORLD BOOK DAY

To celebrate World Book day we welcomed Ruth Eastham give an inspiring talk about narrative structures and how to go about starting their own stories! The pupils were then treated to a wonderful themed lunch. A fun day was had by all!

SIXTH FORM NEWS

Hello everyone! My name is Julia and I am very happy to have the opportunity to write to you all every week updating you about life in the Sixth Form for this term. I applied to be a member of the Head Girl Team because I wanted to be a representative for the school. I am passionate about the wellbeing of every student at St Teresa’s and I aspire to be someone who anyone feels comfortable talking to.

Last Friday, we welcomed back Teresa Baron for the Year 12 PSHE to receive another one of her informative talks on healthy relationships. A lot of things were discussed in the talk, such as unfair double standards for men and women, the features of healthy relationships, and differing gender portrayals in advertising. She spoke to several other year groups, and we all found it very interesting. Aleisha A

On Tuesday afternoon this week in the Sixth Form, we had our first Senior Prefect meeting where our Academic, Pastoral and Values Senior Prefects shared their ideas for the upcoming year. They already have great plans such as developing form time with interactive activities to start the day, introducing an ‘academic buddy’ system to promote kindness and peer to peer academic support within the school and “Universally Challenged”, a teacher vs student quiz to celebrate our Year of Intellect. On Tuesday evening there was an Explore Lecture about Interior Design in celebration of our value of the year.

I would like to say a big congratulations to our Year 13 students because, on Wednesday, they finished their mock exams! They have worked so hard and, as a treat, they attended a wonderful meditative Sound Bath on Friday afternoon. We are so proud of you all!

On Thursday afternoon the whole Student Leadership Team met to share their aim for this term. We learnt about lots of exciting projects that are in the planning stages at the moment. I look forward to sharing more information with you about the projects over the coming weeks. An example for this week is from our wonderful Art Captain Neve who is launching an exciting new Art Enrichment Club, starting on Wednesday 8th March in Room 25 for all students to unleash their creativity. She was inspired by female artists for International Women’s Day which is next week. She has also started up a photography competition, where you can submit a photo that fits the design brief of ‘The Natural World”. She has emailed all students about this and we look forward to seeing the results of the winning entries later on this term.

Wishing everyone an enjoyable weekend and I look forward to updating you about life in the Sixth Form again next week.

BOARDING NEWS

Welcome back! We hope you all had a great half term!

At the beginning of this half term we welcomed our new gap, Lara! Coming from a boarding school herself, Lara lived in a small country town (Scone, Australia) and is thoroughly enjoying being a part of the St Teresa’s boarding community as she engages with the girls and a range of areas across the school!

Upon the boarders’ return, staff heard everything about the girls’ adventures over the break. Over the past week they have all settled back into school routine very smoothly and are enjoying after school activities!

To end the week, on Saturday the girls headed out to paintballing! As the girls got armed up in head-to-toe camo, the fierce competition begun! Miss Ashleigh and Miss Lara by their sides, smiles were shared all round and the girls loved the new experience!

As part of our weekly activities in boarding, on Mondays we undergo an activity based around exercise. This week we did our first session of ‘Just Dance’ where the girls aim to replicate the dance moves on the screen coordinated to music. Lots of ‘questionable’ dance moves being performed, our most enthusiastic dancer was Casilda! All the girls involved now wish to do ‘Just Dance’ every week on Monday as their preferred exercise.

This weekend we are looking forward to a very adventurous activity in London - Gripped - High ropes and zip wires!

YEAR 8 RETREAT

YEARS 8-13 PSHCE TALKS

Dr Teresa Baron, research fellow at the University of Nottingham, presented to Years 8-13 in their PSHCE lessons. She spoke of the importance of healthy relationships, the warning signs when things go wrong and good mental health. We found her talk very useful and look forward to having her present to parents in the Summer Term.

MUSIC RECITAL

On Tuesday evening Mrs Yalden and the Music Department delivered a wonderful music recital in the chapel, showcasing a range of accomplished musicians from Years 8 to 12. The music recital provided a chance for these girls to perform on either their second instruments or showcase pieces that they haven’t had a chance to before. The experience of this music recital was truly compelling for the audience, and it displayed the talent and dedication of these young musicians. It was inspiring to see these young women and girls taking ownership of their gifts.

EXPLORE LECTURE

"Good interior design is more than paint charts and scatter cushions" says Georgie Postlethwaite, this week’s guest speaker.

Georgie has always been passionate about good interior design how it makes spaces function effectively, how it affects mood and well-being and, how the perfect blend of colour, texture, pattern and finish can increase the aesthetic value of a property. Her talk was very informative!

‘HELPINGYOUR

GIRLS TO HAVE HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS’ PARENT SEMINAR

FRIDAY 17TH MARCH 3:15-4:15PM

Alicia Drummond will be giving a parent seminar on friendships in the Sixth Form Lecture Theatre. Alicia will be giving a corresponding talk to Years 8 and 9 in their PSHCE lessons on the same day.

In this talk, we will explore the complex world of teenage friendships and what parents can do to help their daughters have happy, healthy relationships with others. We will look at how our interventions can help or hinder when they fall out with others, and what to do if we are concerned that bullying might be an issue.

If you would like to attend, please fill out this Microsoft form: https://forms.office.com/e/gQctw65Xrw

YEAR 12 TRIP TO BANK OF ENGLAND

The Business and Economics Department are delighted to offer your daughters an opportunity to visit the Bank of England. Here they may catch the very next interest rate change and will have the opportunity to visit the Museum to gain an appreciation of the purpose of the Monetary Policy Committee, an insight into the history of money and how inflation erodes it, whilst also having the opportunity to hold some heavy gold bars! We will leave school at 8.30am on Wednesday 8th March, take the minibus to Effingham train station and then on to London Waterloo.

Please return the medical form and consent form to indicate your consent for your daughters to participate in this trip.

ONE OCEAN

We have extra spaces available to attend the One Ocean workshops, you do not need to be an Eco Team member. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

If you have an interest in marine biology, conservation and microplastics this may be worthwhile; you can also add this to your UCAS application.

There will be a trip in the Summer Term to Brighton, so if you sign up and attend the talks you will automatically receive an invite.

There will be a further workshop on the 9th of March at 13:30 in Room 35.

NOTICES

NEW DEI PREFECT

I am Amarie A and St Teresa’s first ever DEI prefect. This role means a lot to me, as I think diversity, equality and inclusivity are very important things in making a school community a collaborative success. I am extremely grateful to be able to represent the POC (Person of Colour) community at our school. I come from a family of leaders and my great grandfather was a human rights activist in Nigeria. This inspired me to challenge and further educate people in beliefs and systems that will ensure that everybody feels valued and gets to join a level playing field. Personally, to lead in this new role means our team of DEI ambassadors will be able to work on projects, which will enhance and make a difference in our school. Please see below some exciting opportunities you can involve yourself in.

COMPETITION - WHO ISYOUR MODERN DAY MARY SEACOLE?

We have an exciting opportunity to enter the Young Seacole Trust's upcoming competition: 'Who is your modern-day Mary Seacole?'

We also have a new photography competition where you can submit a photo that fits the design brief: The Natural World. This can be in any form; from something you find within nature to a composition you have arranged yourself. There will be a winner from each year group, and they will get the chance to have their work shown in the school bulletin and will receive merits for their hard work; this is open to all ages. All submissions should be emailed to neve.scott@st-teresas.com and must be in by Monday 27th March. We can’t wait to see your creations!

This Week

We began our reflection on the season of Lent remembering the 40 days that Jesus spent preparing in the wilderness.

We particularly remembered that during this time Jesus was tempted. When we recall that Jesus was a human like us, we also recall that he experienced all the same emotions and feelings that we experience, and, as a consequence, was tempted in the same ways that we are. While we will all have experienced those pangs over the past few days as we have begun our Lenten fast the temptations that Jesus experienced cut to the very heart of his being.

The first temptation was to turn stones into bread. This is understandable given that we know that Jesus had spent the 40 days fasting. The temptation that both Jesus and every one of us face, is to put our own needs first, particularly those need that bring us pleasure. While pleasure is a good thing, if we make the seeking of pleasure our primary goal, we will always go astray. Jesus rejects the temptation, instead recognising that only God gives us the fulfilment that we so persistently seek.

The second temptation was about self-centredness. Jesus is tempted to fling himself from the peak of the temple, knowing that God would protect him. We all face the temptation of placing ourselves in the centre of our own private universe, believing the lie that we are the most important person in the world. While it is true that we are precious and unique, that deep value that God puts on us is realised as we reach out to others, recognising that we are to be a gift to others.

Finally, Jesus faces the temptation of pride. Of all the sins, this is potentially the greatest as we seek to secure our position with the flimsy cloak of earthly power. We can never be truly ourselves if we elevate ourselves to dominate others. Instead we are called to serve, as Jesus served. Only then will we become the person God calls us to be.

We hope that you are all well, but please remember to pack enough layers for riding. It has been very bitter with the wind lately and we don’t have too many spare coats on hand!

It was an incredible result of NSEA competitions last weekend, have a look on our Facebook page for a video of the events!

There was an NSEA competition at Merrist Wood last weekend and there were really good results from the riders!

At STE, the Chiropractor came round and gave some of the horses a really good treatment. And we are happy that the lessons are back on as normal from this week!

The horse of the week is… Mouse!

NSEA News

An incredibly busy weekend for the STE NSEA teams; two venues, two disciplines, heights from 40cm-1m, some riders at their first competitions and with new ponies, great riding, great team spirit and they all went back to school for a rest on Monday!

At Merrist Wood show jumping on Saturday, Claudia B went double clear in the 70cm for 8th and Harriet L jumped a brilliant double clear at her first ever competition.

In the 80cm we had two teams, the Blue team of Amber B (individual 4th), Lilly S and Saskia TvV all jumped double clear for 2nd place, and qualified for the Champs in October. Meanwhile the Green team of Claudia B, Antonia S (10th) and Pernille A finished 4th, qualifying for the Plate Champs in October.

The 90cm team of Amber B, Lilly S, Chloe B and Izzy L finished 2nd, also qualifying for the Champs in October with an individual 4th for Chloe and 7th for Amber.

Onto Sunday, and it was a very busy day at Coombelands with Arena Eventing and Show Jumping going on.

In the Arena Eventing Pernille had a great round in the 70cm to finish just outside the top 10. In the 80cm there were lots of great rounds jumped but highlights were an individual 4th for Lilly S and 9th for Amber B. The 90cm team of Lilly S, Chloe B and Lulu S finished 4th, with Lulu placing 4th and Chloe 5th individually. Lulu S also did the 1m as an individual to come 7th.

In the showjumping, Holly C and Jess R both had great rounds in the 50cm for a double clear finishing just outside the placings. In the 60cm Jess R finished 2nd, and Antonia S also finished 2nd in the 80cm.

In the 90cm Windsor Qualifier the team of Amber B, Chloe B, Antonia S and Izzy L put in a strong performance to finish on 4 faults and 5th out of 12 teams, with Chloe finishing 3rd individually out of 45 riders.

A mammoth weekend and a huge thank you to all the parents, supporters and riders for all their hard work and representing the school so well! We are very proud and look forward to continuing the great teamwork and camaraderie throughout the rest of the year and beyond!
