Golfing Fever
Few could miss the start of the Illawarra on the South Coast of New South Wales, where the mountains meet the sea and the postcard views rival any you’ll find along the Coast. It’s an easy drive from Sydney, with lots to see along the way. • Turn off into the Royal National Park – the second-oldest in the world – and take a scenic drive to the popular hanggliding site of Stanwell Tops. • Drive down the coast and explore the
Northern Wollongong Coastal Villages, famous for their beaches, cosy cafes, arts and antiques. • New South Wales’s third-largest city, Wollongong, is just an hour’s drive from Sydney and this thriving holiday hub offers everything from adventure sports to relaxation, great shopping and gourmet restaurants but if you’re searching for some calm and inner peace visit the Nan Tien Buddhist Temple – the largest
Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere. • Water sports abound in nearby Shellharbour, home to Lake Illawarra, plus famous local surf spot The Farm in Killalea State Park. • There’s also great hiking and refreshing swimming holes to be found in Macquarie Pass National Park on the Illawarra escarpment. • Further south is Kiama, a picturesque
fishing village famous for its ‘Blowhole’ This natural spout is fed from the sea below and can shoot a stream of water up to 60 metres high! • Adrenaline junkies can also get their kicks at Jamberoo Recreation Park, which is just a short drive from Kiama. • If you’d rather flake out on a beach with a good book, you’re sure to find a slice of heaven around Gerringong and Gerroa.

Professor Gerard Sutton: University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor
power With his schoolboy-like grin, Professor Gerard Sutton has every reason to smile. The University of Wollongong’s Vice-Chancellor reveals to Image’s Stella Lauri, his satisfaction in mixing business with pleasure.
It’s a title which comes with enormous responsibilities. University Vice-Chancellor. In business terms, Professor Gerard Sutton is Chief Executive Officer of the region’s second largest company. To his 1,500 staff and 22,000 students, he’s in charge of catapulting the institution beyond the realms of academia. “The University is the future of the whole Illawarra region because it’s our responsibility to diversify the economy from what are our strong

traditional roots of mining and steel,” he says. Diversified, it has. Apart from a 1950’s picture log, there aren’t any remnants of the dairy farms and coal wash, which once occupied campus land. Standing tall amongst a landscape of perfectly manicured gardens are towers of knowledge. The university’s strength is not just in its teaching, says the Professor.“We are one of Australia’s leading research universities and that has been a dramatic shift.” With 4,000 international students from more than 60 countries studying on campus, the ViceChancellor hasn’t just drawn the world to Wollongong; he’s successfully taken Wollongong to the world. “We have a campus in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and we have 2,500 students there, making us one of the largest western universities in the Middle East,” he says. Raised in Lakemba, in Sydney’s south-west,

Sutton’s rise to the top was gradual, but always remained on course. With a degree in Electrical Engineering, he joined the State Rail Authority. His own move towards research came on completion of his Masters Degree. “I worked at the Australian Atomic Energy Commission and then with the Royal Australian Navy researching sonar detection of submarines,” he says. After joining the University of Technology in Sydney, the Professor became involved with a geoprospecting company searching for oil in the Timor Sea. He soon became the institution’s Foundation Pro-Vice Chancellor, followed by the University of Wollongong’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor – a position which would ultimately groom him for the top job. At the helm for the past eleven years, the man from the west proudly displays all the habits of the east. And when asked about his passion for surfing, the
Professor quickly loses his principal composure and adopts the personality of a cheeky first-year student. “I don’t go out on a board, I’m a real man. I body surf,” he laughs. His position has taken him all over the world and after building a solid reputation as CEO, there have been many offers. But leaving Wollongong, he says convincingly, isn’t an option. “Why would you move from God’s country – it’s the best spot in the world. There’s no better place to live in the world than this area. Unpolluted ocean and so close to the rainforests. The mountains being so close to the ocean turns Wollongong into a picturesque area. But the people make it!” Besides, there’s still plenty of work to be done. From his office window, Gerard Sutton points to the scaffold foundations of what will be the Medical School. To be opened next year, the new
faculty will be crucial in breathing life back into the country’s ailing health system. “This is a completely new model. We will recruit from rural and regional areas, and train them in GP and specialist practices,” he says. While the towers continue to rise, it soon becomes apparent that the Professor’s pride isn’t measured in bricks and mortar. Instead, the University of Wollongong and its leader’s success will always be measured with every new enrolment and passing graduation. “The most rewarding part of this job is the satisfaction that I receive by ensuring that the students who study here are regarded as amongst the world’s best. That’s what we’re here for.” As a former University of Wollongong student, I leave the Vice Chancellor’s Chambers feeling that same sense of pride – and privilege.

“INJECTABLES” – THE MODERN DAY SOLUTION TO RESTORING YOUTH! WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?
beauty
For many people a fuller and more sensuous mouth comes high on their wish list. With a number of options to achieve an array of desired lip shapes, you can enjoy a more pronounced mouth or a soft pouting look with the body’s own material. With using either Collagen, Restylane or Perlane, Lip augmentation can be carried out in two steps; pouting and contouring. To create a more pronounced mouth and fuller lips, product is injected into the inside of the upper and/or lower lip. This is often combined with the marking of the contour of the lip by injecting the gel along the lip line. Redefining this edge leads to a more youthful and appealing look. It also prevents lipstick “bleeding” into the small lines around the lips. The lines that go up towards the nose (philtrum ridges) can be defined by injecting the gel into them. To achieve the optimal result, a combination of these steps is often used. Lips are usually enhanced 2-3 times per year and results are immediate with a small amount of swelling for approx 24hrs.
COLLAGEN
BOTOX Botox is a natural purified protein that helps create a smoother improved appearance to wrinkled areas around the eyes & on the forehead by creating a blocker between the muscle & the nerve endings preventing them from communicating. A small amount is injected into the areas where frowning & squinting have created permanent folds and wrinkles thus creating a heavy look to the facial features. Botox is also commonly used as a wrinkle preventative in younger people wanting to prevent lines & wrinkles before they have the chance to develop. Most common treatment areas are: • Horizontal forehead lines • Vertical frown lines (between eyebrows) • Crows feet • Eyebrow lift To eliminate excess sweating of armpits, palms of hands & soles of feet. Treatment takes just a few minutes & is relatively pain free. Initially you will require repeat treatments every 3-5 months. After 3 to 5 consecutive
Sometimes, no matter how young you feel, your face tells a different story. Sun exposure, pollution, natural aging and lifestyle factors can all diminish the collagen layer that supports the skin. And where collagen diminishes, unwelcome lines and wrinkles may appear. Now, you can temporarily replace your skin’s lost collagen through innovative new treatments made from human collagen. They are CosmoDerm® and CosmoPlast® and they’re changing the face of beauty. As the only FDA-approved commercially available dermal fillers made from human collagen, CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast offer important advantages. • Immediate treatment – no pre-treatment skin test required! • Formulated with an anesthetic for comfort • Treatment and recovery usually take less than one hour • Treatment results last up to six months They can be used to fill in worry lines on the forehead, frown lines between the eyes, crow's feet, smile lines and acne scars, to define the lip border and to minimize deep creases on the side of the mouth.
treatments results last longer for up to 6-12 months.

JAMES HARRIGAN [story_susie burrell] [photography_cybele malinowski]
At just 22 years of age, local boy James Harrigan has a big, fast future ahead of him. In 2005, James was placed 2nd in the Lotus Trophy Championship, the event that precedes the V8 Supercar races. A taste of speed has left James wanting more and he now dreams of becoming one of Australia’s professional race car drivers. In the midst of his discussions with various race car teams, James sat down with Image’s Susie Burrell to talk about driving very fast, but only on the track of course!
SB: How did you first become involved in motor sports? JH: My dad has always been involved in motor sport. Dad used to work on race teams so I was brought up around cars. When I was just 5 ? years old I knew I wanted to race and was racing go-karts when I was just 6. Gradually I progressed from karts to cars. When I finished school I took a year off and worked with the Ford Credit Ute team. Since then I have raced Aussie Race Cars and Lotus. My longterm goal is to race V8 Supercars professionally. SB: Can you outline your success in motor sports so far? JH: When I was racing Sprint karts I won a number of state and national championships. When I moved onto Aussie Race Cars (a popular support

class before the V8s) in 2003 and 2004 I was consistently placed in the top 5. Runner up in the 2005 Lotus Trophy National Championship has been my biggest success up until now. Since then I have been considering my future in the V8 series. SB: What are your immediate and long term plans? JH: At the moment I am concentrating on my immediate future and would love to get a spot on a major race team and experience racing success here in Australia. Long term, it would be great to race overseas.
SB: How do you prepare physically for car racing? JH: One of the simplest things that you can do, funnily enough, is practice car racing on the Play Station. The simulations help to quicken your reflexes, which is perfect preparation for car racing. I also try and keep pretty fit physically as the conditions in a race car can be pretty tough. It can get up to 60°C, and you lose an enormous amount of fluid in the car. I try to run regularly and swim in order to keep my body weight down so I am I good shape for racing. SB: What other characteristics make a good race car driver? JH: Motor sport is 80 per cent mental, so race car drivers tend to be able to focus and block out a lot
of negative energy. Naturally quick reflexes and mental toughness are key characteristics. SB: You are also studying commerce at university. How do you find the time to fit everything in? JH: It is important to me and my family that I also build a career away from car racing so I have something to fall back on in the future. The business training a commerce degree offers is actually very useful in the motor sports arena, as to a certain extent, motor sport is all about good marketing and building business partnerships with the companies who support us. SB: Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far? JH: Probably my Dad as he was the reason I was exposed to race cars so early. I also admire the Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna, as he lived and breathed his sports with such passion and mental focus. SB: What does it feel like to be in a race car traveling at over 250kms hour? JH: There is a mixed sensation of fear and excitement. It is good to have a little fear to ensure that you don’t take any major risks but enough stimulation to race effectively. I also feel that the sound and vibrations within the car add to the excitement. SB: What is a race car driver’s dream car? JH: I would love a Lamborghini or a Ferrari! One day…

I met lots of fantastic industry professionals, made contacts and friendships, and as a result have been working in show biz for the past 10 years.

MO: What do you think makes a good host? BM: Someone who is natural, genuine and relaxed. Someone who doesn’t over do or over act, but still energetic. A good host needs to be able to relate and allow people to feel comfortable and enjoy watching the program… not be distracted. MO: What’s is your Favourite Band? BM: In Musicoz, I love Blue King Brown and Nathan Leigh Jones has so much charisma and talent. In the signed artist category I am a huge INXS fan, also Maroon 5 and No doubt. MO: What do you think about the Independent music scene? BM: There is so much unsigned talent out there and I have the pleasure of seeing and working with these guys all the time. Australia needs to be subjected to these bands/artists/dj’s immediately! It’s like nothing you have ever heard, fresh young new talent. MO: Where to Next? BM: I would like to continue to working closely with presenting music and helping unsigned artists. Plus, continue writing my own material, perform and also a dabble in the acting scene is on the cards. If you’re an unsigned artist, send your clip on mini DV and a bio to: Musicoz, PO Box 1201, Wollongong NSW 2500. There are no broadcast costs involved for the artists.

Variety is the spice of life. My career and life is a dynamic one in an everchanging environment and I find myself needing to be a very adaptable person able to appreciate things from a variety of angles and levels. I love a huge range of music and can genuinely find great pleasure in music of a wide variety. I was brought up to appreciate a lot of things and music was always a valued part of my families enjoyment as I grew up. winefinds with brendan bate
Understanding the wine is really quite important to appreciating it. I still believe that some of the best chardonnays come from fruit grown in the cooler districts of Australia
chardonnay A.B.C.is a phrase that may take you back to your childhood schooling days, but alas it is also a too easily bandied-around idiom used by some of the snobs who move in wine circles. By my recollection the phrase first appeared about 10 years ago. I was sitting at a lunch with colleagues and when asked what wine we would like to drink, the call came from across the table “ Oh, A.B.C. - ‘Anything But Chardonnay!’ ” Australia was in the midst of Chardonnay frenzy, and every wine producer in the country was making one. By “making one” I mean some managed to get it right while many others failed dismally to grasp the true style of the wine, and we saw anything from peach nectar to bland, sterile wines, while some of those heavily oaked numbers were just like chewing on an HB pencil. No wonder the poor bugger didn’t want to drink one. As our export market boomed in the following years, we as a winemaking nation became our own worst enemy when it came to the Chardonnay style we put up for the world to see: usually an overripe, fruit salad concoction that tasted mildly like “fruit
salad pulp in a bottle”. The Americans loved it, for a while, and the Poms warmed to it, for a while, yet by the beginning of the turn of the century they were becoming tired of ‘bit-fruity’ chardonnay, but we weren’t listening. Our markets suffered as a consequence, but that’s another whole story…. At the 2006 Sydney Royal Wine Show held in February, visiting International Judge, Matthew Jukes of the UK made a startling reference to the quality of Chardonnay he had seen at this years’ show, and praised the “new breed” of Australian winemakers for their pursuit of “elegant, well made wines with expressions of clean, rich flavours.” He noted that the cooler climate areas of our country were now finally responsible for some outstanding, world class chardonnays, and once again, praised the winemaking teams for their intelligent use of oak, expression of the vineyard, and wines showing finesse yet character. At the tasting for the show, I got to try most of the Gold medal winning chardies, and you will see the style he is alluding to if you seek out these wines. The key gold medals went to the 2004 Vasse
Felix, along with gold medals to the 2003 Oakridge, 2004 Penfolds Bin Reserve 04A and the 2005 Tempus Two Copper. Certainly worth mentioning was a high pointed silver medal going to the 2004 Wirra Wirra Adelaide Hills Chardonnay - it was my pick from the room. I have always been a chardonnay ally and through a fortunate career in wine have tasted many styles. Understanding the wine is really quite important to appreciating it. I still believe that some of the best chardonnays come from fruit grown in the cooler districts of Australia, and have spoken before about Tumbarumba and Orange in NSW. I am also a big fan of the chardonnay produced by Coolangatta Estate on the Shoalhaven coast. If you’ve ever coined the phrase A.B.C. with reference to Chardonnay, give yourself an uppercut right now, tip that bottle of Sauvignon Blanc down the sink, and go buy a good bottle of Chardie. After all, Kath and Kim can’t be wrong. Contact your nearest independent bottle shop retailer to hunt down these wines. >63 imagemagazine

Wright at home [ STORY _Marilyn Rodrigues] [ PHOTOGRAPHY _Kane Weeks] [ PHOTOGRAPHY _Mark Weeks]
One of the world’s most famous houses, designed by visionary 20th Century architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was the inspiration for this Wollongong home which has many examples of his innovations. Fallingwater, a house built over a waterfall in the remote Western Pennsylvanian forest, is a national treasure drawing thousands of visitors each year. It is said to be a supreme example of the American architect’s concept of organic architecture, promoting harmony between buildings, their occupants and nature through design.
The third rock wall in the centre of the house separates the kitchen and dining area and the living room.
