Randomly Speaking Sleep Magic...
A
s you get older, it seems to take longer to go to sleep, and shorter to take a nap. I can “nod off” with the best of them. Sit me down in a comfy chair, in front of the TV and I’ll be in dream land in a matter of seconds. But by the time I turn off the TV, turn off all the lights, lock the house, go upstairs, and put on my PJ’s it takes me forever to go to sleep. I love taking naps. That great feeling of having your eyelids get heavier and heavier is absolutely wonderful. My youngest son Andy used to call it getting his “sleep magic”. At first you start to fight it, then you move to the second stage of which is closing your eyes for a moment, waking yourself up because you’ve got work to do. Finally you say, “Oh, I’ll just close my eyes for a little bit!” Wrong, you’re a goner. The only way you’ll wake up is when someone embarrasses you by waking you up. An old high school friend of mine named Bud and I used go to the Saturday movies and buy an extra bag of popcorn just to wake up ‘ol Ernie, who was Bud’s Mom’s boyfriend. He’d come over to the house the night before to watch TV. He also loved popcorn and he loved to nap. So every night like clock
work, he’d recline in that ‘0l Lazy Boy chair with his popcorn in his lap and before you could say “Sweet Dreams” his head would start to lay back and his mouth would open wide - just asking for trouble. We’d come back from the movies with an extra bag of popcorn and sit across the room throwing those fluffy white popped kernels into his mouth, until he started to choke. Then “Boom”, out comes all the popcorn all over the place and he’d say, “Oh, boy, I must have fallen asleep last night! Pretty cruel trick but he had the last laugh; he knew how to get the sleep magic. I figured out there are three ways to get that magical dust. The first way is to treat it medically. There are various sleep disorder centers and lots of doctors that will synchronize your body clock with your brain, by prescribing all sorts of sleeping pills. It costs thousands and only works 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time you get addicted and you tend to move on to harder drugs. You do eventually get to sleep, but the dreams are frightening. The second way is to use Ernie “the popcorn” meister’s method. What method you say? You see, it wasn’t the chair, and it wasn’t the popcorn, it was the TV that made him sleepy. Buy a TV and a DVR . Don’t get ahead of me now. There’s lots of people who put a TV in continued on page 9

their bedroom so they can fall asleep watching the 11 O’clock news. But what if you want to get up real early one day. Trying to fall asleep by 8pm and the sandman won’t visit for a couple hours because your body clock has already been set. That’s where the DVR comes in. By pre-taping some political C-SPAN you’ve got yourself a “ready-made-sleep-magic” recording that can be played back again and again, at anytime, that, in turn, will adjust your body clock and brain into thinking it’s 11 O’clock at night. The third method is the “budget method”, but it’s also the fool proof method. In fact, I defy anyone to tell me you won’t “fall off” with this one. But be aware, it’s only for those people who really, really need to fall into never, never land. If you’re right handed then you’ll want to lay on your left side. If you’re left handed, you’ll need to get on your right side. Position yourself as close to the absolute edge of the bed as you can. I’m talking “absolute edge”. You sort of have to inch your way over the edge - ever so carefully, but make sure you’re laying on your side. Once you’ve gotten yourself on the edge of the bed - just close your eyes. That’s It! Whether it’s an event, exhibit, or new acquisition, the Crawford is always celebrating Northeast Ohio’s rich transportation history. One of its two major exhibits, Setting the World in Motion, tells the story of how the Northeast Ohio impacted the auto and transportation industry. Many don’t realize that the area was poised to be the original Motor City, at one time boasting over 100 auto manufacturers.

Car Washing Taking your vehicle to the do-it-yourself car wash can offer you a great experience when washing your car / truck while at the same time it can offer you some benefits that perhaps washing in your driveway cannot. Some of these benefits include, high pressure water, good foaming soap, car wash brush, hot wax rinse, the ability to hang your mats for pressure washing, shade, vacuums, trash bins, good place for cold weather washing and more. What I recommend is taking all of your cleaning supplies and putting them in a “milk crate” type box or small wash bucket. Wheel cleaner, tire dressing, drying blade, a couple towels and that’s about it. You can also keep your wax in there as your other detailing supplies. Do not be afraid to use the wash brush hanging on the wall. I have never had a bad experience and with the kind of soap that billows out coupled with the soft, often times hogs hair bristles there is no scratching of any kind. Plus, the management makes sure there are no problems or else they’d have problems! The first step is to immediately go to the high pressure soap and start to rinse down the vehicle while keeping your wheel cleaner close by so you can spray as you go. Usually $5 - $6 is all you need and this can be done in under - 8 minutes without rushing. Take (20) quarters to start which is $5 and keep the other buck or two in your pocket. You don’t want to let the timer run out because you then have to start over with the beginning amount of money required. Sometimes there is a “courtesy” beep(ing) on the final 1 minute countdown so just be aware!! If you hang your mats up on the mat clamps don’t forget about them before www.cruisintimesmagazine.com
your time runs out. Using the high pressure water from the wand very close to the grooves on rubber mats as well as in the wheel wells is a good way to release caked on dirt without a lot of (Or sometimes any) scrubbing. Here are the steps: Starting out with the high pressure soap from the wand, go around the vehicle and wet it down. Use your wheel cleaner at that time. For vehicles that require it and for those of you comfortable with it, put the dial or button on foaming brush, grab it and go to town. You’ll have to change direction a few times in order to keep the hose from slapping your vehicle (With either brush or water wand) but the good news is that the way it is mounted allows you 360 degree access to all sides. Once you are done brushing or hand washing immediately change from foaming brush to high pressure rinse to get all the soap off and then to “hot wax” for the final rinse (Sometimes called rinse aid). I think all other product offered is more of a time waster as it comes out very slow and time is important in the bay. More so than that, having your own product, like wheel cleaner is much more effective because the strength is so much better.

1973 Monte Carlo Chris and Karen Painesville, Ohio Since 1984 Ive been a MonteHolic. Ive had 25 Montes flow through my hands. In the mid 90s I had 4 at one time. In 2002 I found my keeper. It is a 73 factory 454 with all factory options. It was also a 2 owner car with only 76,000 miles on it. In the 14 years of ownership, its come a long way.
