Randomly Speaking Restrooms They are known as bathroom, washroom and johns, anyway you look at them, they seem to be dramatically changing over the years. Gone are the outside privy, thank god. I remember using them as a kid and there was always a small can of lime hanging from the door. You were supposed to sprinkle a couple of scoops of it down the hole to help in the fermenting process. I guess that was the first ‘water-less’ bathroom. You can still find a outside privy down south but they’re all required to have hand sanitizers on the door. Now it’s all about concerving water, electricity and money. The normal toilet flush uses 4-7 gallons of water and recent building codes require installation of a toilet that uses only use 2 gallons in a flush. In any case, I now understand why all those restaurants at downtown festivals don’t want you using their bathrooms. Figuring thousands of people flushing 4 times that water could amount to a huge water bill. I noticed when I was at the Summit Motorsports Park (Norwalk), Their bathrooms were of the flush-less variety. While standing there I had memories of the old “Pee trouphs at the old Cleveland Stadium, which used the ‘gravity system’. It must have worked because there were always guys lined up waiting to use it. In Europe, men are given an entire wall to pee against, while in this great nation we must hit a target which is at best only about a foot square. It seems most don’t hit the target as evidence by the pee stains on the floor under the urinal. Some bars have the daily sports section fixed to the wall above the urinal so you have something to read while you’re in there. I’ve never had to pee that much to read the newspaper. I just want to get in and get done and get out. On the paper towel end of things. I remember when restrooms had those hand cranked paper towel dispensers. It required cranking this tiny handle about 15 times just to get enough paper to dry your hands, it was fun. Remember the cloth dispenser where a giant loop of cloth came out and then went back in? 6 Cruisin’ Times ~ April 2020

Next they came out with a dispenser that mimicked a tissue box. The attendant filled it ,and once you pull one sheet out, the rest were interlocked and the folded would follow. That kind of thinking works well for the women’s bathroom, but when a bunch of guys start ripping paper towels from a metal device, you wind up with jammed paper and a dented dispenser, now sitting on the floor. Researchers and health officials noticed that an airblower might not only dry your hands but you wouldn’t have to touch anything. I hate that thing and I don’t know why. I did like the one they have at Beech Bend Drag Strip that’s got an actual mini turbo behind the wall (honest). You put your hands in front of the blower, hit the handle and I defy you to keep your hands in the air. Everybody walks out of the bathroom laughing. Today’s high tech bathrooms are now of the no-touch info-red variety. There’s no touch sink that you’ll find at all the rest areas on the turnpike. I don’t like them either. Does the water come on when you break the beam or when you take your hand away from the beam? Then there’s the infa-red paper towel dispensers. I’ve stood there moving my hands across the damn thing waving, and just before I open the door to leave the bathroom, a small piece of paper comes out. Great, now I’ve touched the door and gotten all of the germs from everybody that’s walked through. Then, as luck would have it, I meet somebody passing by the bathroom and they want to shake hands, I do and then think, they probably think I peed all over my hands! It aint easy going to bathroom these days. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

he Mahoning and Trumbull County area is fortunate to have numerous organizations, clubs and businesses that promote and take part in car shows, cruises and other automotive events. The National Packard Museum and the Mahoning Valley Corvette Club joined forces to promote a show open to all brands and genres of the motor vehicle. Both the museum and the car club are active in several events throughout the year.

The Packard Museum is next door to the Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio and combined parking area is very spacious. It is worthy to note that Warren was the original home of Packard Motorcars and the Packard Electrical Co. (now Delphi) The museum houses a huge Packard display along with other notable classics and also hosts a rotating display of cars, trucks and motorcycles. It was a bright mid-summer day and the turnout provided a great mix of classics, Corvettes, muscle cars, restorations and hot rods. There was even a true barnfind Corvette convertible brought to the show by Baier’s Corvettes. Food and product vendors were on hand to add to the variety of this event. The show’s location boasts easy access and plenty of space for gearheads, their cars and even for spectators. This is one to keep in mind when you set up your 2020 show schedule. his was the 37th Annual edition of this show and, yet, it was the first I had heard of it. There is promoted as offering “Something for Everyone” each year. The event is located at beautiful Atwood Lake Park in Mineral City, Ohio during the first weekend in October. The Atwood Area Fall Festival reaches a wide audience with food, music, homemade crafts, handson displays, entertainment, interpretive demonstrations, exhibits, and so much more. In cooperation with the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, the Atwood Area Fall Festival Committee Inc. coordinates all the weekend’s activities.Visitor’s wishing to spend the weekend can camp at Atwood Lake Park. Reservations for camping can be made at the Atwood Lake Park website. As the weather cools and the colors change, bring your family and friends to Atwood Lake Park to discover the beauty, quality, and fun of the Atwood Area Fall Festival where there truly is “Something for Everyone” The Annual Atwood Fall Festival Car Show was presented by the Festival Committee with Wild Wes Paintworks & the Hot Rod Factory. This is a three day event with the car show taking place on Sunday afternoon. My day was great except for the off and on rain (mostly on). The rain seemed to be almost finished as I was preparing to leave and the drive home was completely dry. Still, it was well worth the trip as the location was excellent and turnout was good considering the weather and the mix of rides was very nice too!

The trophies certainly were unique and they were presented to a large number of classes. There is plenty of room for more cars should the weather cooperate better next year. Spacious parking is available for spectators as well with shuttle service that will take you around to the various activities. It was a pleasant drive down through the country with the fall colors in abundance. My GPS decided it would be best to take a winding hill-country gravel/dirt road for a longer than appreciated portion of the trip. Be sure to check the route and stay on the main roads especially if approaching from west of Atwood Lake. This event is one to keep in mind when you set up your 2020 show schedule. or the 8th straight year the hard working folks at the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club brought their Wild Hot Rod Weekend to the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel in Mahwah, New Jersey. With a picture perfect weekend records were set each and every day of the four day event. All sorts of cool cars came pouring in to fill each and every square inch of the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel making for a car lovers paradise. The show is made up of all pre-72 cars from hot rods, customs, race cars, rat rods, muscle cars all the cool stuff that make the car culture scene so great. The show actually got started on Wednesday with a cool get together where folks got to come out and check out the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel and listen to some great music. This kick off lead into a great next four days of fun and a place for folks to get together and check out cool cars. With over 3000 cars and nearly twenty-thousand people all coming out to support the show. Thunder Alley is one of the largest collection of vintage drag racing cars put together in one spot. With over twenty cars on the grounds made up of funny cars, dragsters, gassers, all firing up and making noise three times a day much the delight to all those that came out. Thunder Alley is put together with help from the fine folks at POR 15, Grundy Insurance, REZ Beverages, Racing Junk Com, Motor Car Manor, Lucas Oil, CRC Industries, Meguiar and Tub-O-Towels. Each and every time the cars fired up the fine folks from the Deuce Bags car club passed buckets around to collect money that is donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. All the car owners come out and donated their time and fuel to put on a great show and along the way and raise money for a fine cause.

Inside the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel’s ballroom one can find a great collection of cars on display. Each and every year Dead Man’s Curve very own Mario looks to keep improving the display with cars that folks have not seen in many years. From famous tv, movie and show cars it is all on display which this year included a pair of Zingers made famous back in the day by car designer Chuck Miller. Chuck Miller came out to the show this year to check out everything that went on during the run of the show. In addition he signed autographs and talked to fans about all the cars that he designed over the years. Catherine Bach who played Daisy Duke on the long running tv show Dukes of Hazzard was on hand as well taking photos with fans and signing autographs and telling stories about her time on the tv show. Outside in the car show folks were treated to the Horny Mike of Counting Cars tv show fame brought his Horny Mike traveling road show to Wild Hot Rod Weekend. Ryan Evans the talented artist from the very same Counting Cars show came along to spend time at the show with Horny Mike in his road show. Both of these talented folks had a super time checking out all the cars and telling stories from the tv show. The Pinstripers Corner was made up with many, many talented folks put together by Mr J. All of these talent folks were hand putting their fine work on anything that might need that little extra fine artwork. As well as selling all sorts of cool pieces of artwork which folks could purchase. All types of vendors of all kinds could also be found selling all sorts of cool goodies for folks to take home with them. Over thirty bands played during the run of the show filling the air with great music. In between the bands their were live radio broadcasts from many local stations. The great trio of Dead Man’s Curve Dj’s made up of Jimmy Fun-Zul, Johnny Tiki-B and Chris Oldie kept everyone entertained even more with their great collection of cool classic tunes. Each and every year more and more car clubs make the Dead Man’s Curve Wild Hot Rod Weekend there selection for the place to come out with all their cool cars and spend time with their fellow car clubs. From the Beatniks, Tiki Kings, Deuce Bags, Boulevard Bombers, Jersey Gassholz, Stateline Car Club, Moonshine Motors, Panel Kings, Bronx Mopars, Rumblers, were just a few of the many and many car clubs that came out to lend their support to the show. A very cool selection of one of a kind trophies were handed out at the end of the show. These trophies hand made each and every year are the ones that everybody works hard to try to take home. A new one this year was the Sparky Memorial Trophy which was given out to the best Rat Rod in memory of Sparky. Sparky a long time friend of the club who always put together his own gathering of Rat Rods at the Syracuse Nationals, Sparky passed away earlier this year. There is no doubt that with each and every year the Wild Hot Rod Weekend put on by the Dead Man’s Curve Car Club is fast becoming the show to attend and check out. Folks make it point to get their hotel rooms booked at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel so they will not miss out one minute of the four day run of this great classic car show. ~John

his is one of the years’ favorite events held on the beautiful campus of the Sisters of Notre Dame Cathedral Latin College in Munson, Ohio. They have a massive barbecue and boutique that lures folks from all around the Northern Ohio area to enjoy their generous hospitality. Included are all kinds of events that feature the finest music offered by DJ Al Piniecki... a cruiser favorite!

The cruise is a big thing in Geauga County! I have only attended recent cruises included in the event from 2013 through 2015. The Sisters of Notre Dame include the car cruise as part of their annual open house every year. They serve barbequed chicken and ribs for folks to enjoy along with that special boutique for the women. The 2015 gathering was slightly off from previous years because of potential rain, but the weather won’t keep most cruisers away! The last festival I attended was the 53rd annual event cruise in 2015! They continue hosting the barbecue and boutique annually and still include the car cruise even though the cruise is not well publicized. Robert’ s 1964 Avanti Newcomerstown, OH. This was a graveyard car that sat for 15 years in a yard under a canvass. Then 10 more years till I started restoring it. The project took 3 years to complete. I was told by the previous owner that this Avanti was a graduation gift to a son of a executive in Massillon Oh. It was delivered to the Studebaker garage in the Downtown area. The Lady I purchased it from bought in in Aug 1964. It had been in an accident before she had it. Apparently too much car for a young driver.

John’s 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner Brunswick, OH. This is my 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner. I bought it in 2013 and did a complete rebuild from top to bottom. My car is equipped with a 542ci stroker motor that’s electronically fuel injected and runs on anything from premium gas to E85 Ethanol. The motor is backed by a Tremec TKO 600 5-Speed transmission and a Dana 60 rear end with .410 gears. I’m very proud of the 614 horsepower produced at the rear wheels. I like to attend as many cars cruises as possible, l love driving my car!

1966 AMC Rambler American that I bought 4 years ago and started building it from the ground up for cruisin’ and drag racing on weekends. I built a Mopar small block stroker 408 CI with tunnel ram and 2 holley four barrels, Hurst 4 speed and a narrowed Mopar rear with 391 gears. The car was a shell when I bought it and I built everything on it including the 408 engine myself. It took about 3 years to get it on the road and last summer I raced it at Thompson drag raceway with my best friend of 35 years (Mike), shown in the picture cruisin’ the streets of Akron in his Gasser and my American. I hope to have it painted this year and take it to the local cruise spots finally, and to the drag strip a few times too.

‘Wheels of Freedom’

e all wind up sharing stories about our first cars and how awesome they made us feel. The freedom, the independence. Well let’s face it, those were not our first taste of wheels. Engines, maybe, but not wheels. My gray matter started thinking back to pre-car days and running through some of the exploits my friends and I had while pedaling our bikes, and it occurred to me that THIS was really the time I felt some freedom. First was turning our banana bikes into SUV’s, Softball was squeezed between the sissy bar, glove went over the sissy bar, and the bat fit in between those, and you’d zip to the school yards for pickup games. But for a couple years, as I got closer to driver’s license time, say 13 to 16, I started using the bike to venture beyond the local ‘invisible fencing’ of the neighborhood. My friends and I would start thinking of other places we could go, places we used to bug our folks to drive us to. Thing is, we now know that a typical 13 to 16-year-old in the 70’s didn’t have ‘planning’ as a key strength. Our actions were usually based on, ‘Sure, let’s go’ and let the adventures begin. And these trips usually began with my nephew and I coming up with these brilliant ideas. Now, my nephew, Wally, and I are basically the same age (5 mo. apart). We stayed at each other’s houses a lot, so we grew up more like brothers. He hung with all my friends and we shared good, bad and ugly together. Bike trips were no exception. These were always eventful, but fortunately, mostly on the cool side. Two of these, for whatever reason, came to mind recently, and brought back some really good times, so here goes.. Wally and I thought that it’d be cool to go to The Flats and ride around the Cuyahoga River. So off we went. Only about 5 miles from home. We flew down Columbus Rd. hill and as soon as we got to the bottom, there was a freighter docked right there. We parked our bikes and started scoping things out. Ship looked empty and the ramp was staring at us saying. “Hey come on up and have a look around”, so, we did. Walked all around the vessel until we got the dreaded, “Hey!, what are you doing here?” Gulp! We told the guy we were just looking around and not looking to take anything. Turned out to be a decent fella and told us we had 5 minutes to see what we wanted to see, then ‘Git!’, just don’t go inside anywhere. “Whew!”. So, we stayed a few minutes and took off. We pedaled all through the flats and saw plenty along the river. Time to go home. Only issue, going back UP Columbus Rd. hill. Ate good when we got home.

The next trip was with a group of about 6 of us. We loved going swimming at a place called Wildwood. But our parents or my brother would drive us. Well, we figured, we know the way so why don’t we take our bikes there? This is where that ‘planning’ (or, lack of) part comes in. One guy’s bike was notorious for popping its chain. Most of us had 10- speeds. Wally, however, had the 5-speed banana bike with the little 16” front tire. Not exactly a road tourer. So what. The route we were used to when we were in a car was down Rt. 237, other wise known as Berea Freeway. Cars go 55 and we’re pedaling on the side at, 6 or 7 mph? Were there other ways to go besides pedaling on this freeway? Sure. Did we know that? Nope! Did we realize how far this was from home? Nope. We just knew that we were there in less than an hour when people drove us. How long could it take? After a few hours, and fixing someone’s chain about 4 times, we got there. Boy, were we ready to jump in some cool water. After about an hour, one of us started looking at the time and figuring that, if it took us that long to get there, we probably would need to leave soon to get back before dark. So, off we went. Should be a breeze home cuz’ we know what to expect, right? Um, ‘negatory, Ghost Rider’. The guy with chain trouble? Yeah, popped off again and it got jammed behind the sprocket. Tools? Hah! Just when we were ready to phone home for someone to pick him up, ‘Eureka!’, got it loose. But now the guy is riding at walking speed. When we finally made it back home, we told my older brother of the trip. That’s when he told us that Wildwood is over 16 miles from home and told us all what geniuses we were for not even taking a pair of pliers, knowing about the guys chain…or fixing his issue BEFORE we left. Yeah, some lessons learned there. But trips like this really were my first sense of Freedom. Hopping on my bike and knowing I could go a lot farther and see more things beyond the neighborhood. Hope this triggers some of your own Freedom Journey’s from the way-back machine. They’re fun to visit. ~ Mike J
