THE DETROIT AUTORAMA - JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS MORNING Photos and story by Joe Secka
My first trip to the Detroit Autorama, at what was then called Cobo Hall, is still a very, very vivid memory. I became “addicted” to custom cars and hot rods years before I even obtained a driving permit. Note: I did get my driver’s license in 1959! Rod & Custom, Car Craft, Hot Rod Magazine and others were almost like bibles. Anyway, it was back in 1962 and I was hooked up with a Kodak Brownie camera. I was intent on getting photos of all of this Candy Apple and chrome which I was about to see in person. This included, of course, the legendary George Barris creation, The Ala Kart. Roger’s ’32 Hudson, Stewertstown, PA.
It was cold during that winter. Other trips to the shores of the Detroit River have been equally as cold. However, in spite of the weather, my ride to Detroit was filled with anxious anticipation of what there would be to see in person. The Ridler Award and Great Eight competition ensured there would certainly be something new. The Oakland Roadster Show (now The Grand National Roadster Show) had already taken place and there was a likelihood several of those cars would arrive from the West Coast. Did I mention this show is at least as exciting as Christmas Morning for me? Yep, it sure is!

OK, let’s get back to 2020! Fortunately, last year the Autorama was able to be completed. The Covid-19 pandemic pretty much destroyed the balance of the car show and cruising seasons through and into late summer. The “cancellation effect” is still rearing its ugly head as the 2021 Autorama has already been pushed back to the April 30 - May 2 weekend.
Upon arrival, I was able to see the GM corporate offices towering in the background of the TCF Center and then walk through the doors and past the giant Joe Louis statue in the lobby on my way to “Christmas Morning!” I certainly was not disappointed! Once again, there were so many amazing builds that I know I left a few “unwrapped” and unseen. Premier builders from around the USA and other countries had their builds positioned in every corner and up and down every aisle. Automotive specialty vendors were plentiful with both products and information. The Michigan Hot Rod Association, the show organizers, done real good! Numerous celebrities were on hand if that attraction appealed to you. Chip Foose, Gene Winfield, Roy Brizio, Barry Meguiar, WWE star Ric Flair, Faster with Finnegan and Roadkill star Mike Finnegan (Motor Trend), former Top Gear host Rutledge Wood, Cody Walker from Furious 7, and Spider-Man (yes, the real one!) were in attendance. There was a display called “The Most Significant Hot Rods of the 20th Century” (Ed Roth’s Beatnik Bandit and Outlaw, Tommy Ivo’s 1929 Ford Model T Roadster, Bob McGee’s 1932 Ford roadster, and Norm Grabowski’s “Kookie” T-bucket), plus the 10 customs in the Cavalcade of Customs exhibit, and more. It almost felt like I was walking

through a portion of the Charles Dickens’ novel (A Christmas Carol) with the Christmas Past! Yeah, I know, knock it off already! I went back and forth and around in circles shooting multiple angles of the vehicles. I stopped for a quick lunch and a few minutes to rest my weary legs and then it was off to the basement for the Autorama Extreme exhibition. The vintage hot rods and customs, rat rods, old gassers, Winfield’s Garage, a band and Miss Autorama Pin-Up Girl contest along with everything else you could possibly want to see did not disappoint. On the way back up the escalator, I remembered I had not checked out the pinstripers and artists’ area where their work was going to be auctioned off for charity. I quickly checked that off the list and made my way to an area set up for model car builders to show off their talents. Hmmmm! I still have a fairly large collection of unbuilt model cars! OK, enough with my daydreaming already! Check out the photos and start thinking about making your plans to attend the 69th edition of the Autorama. It covers three days and I now realize have never done that. What would three straight days of “Christmas Morning” be like? Tis the season! LOL! - Joe

Ridler Winner - Brad, Brady and Cory Ranweiler – New Ulm, Minnesota – 1963 Chevrolet Wagon “Impressive” - The Ranweilers completed the car in their own shop, Show Cars Automotive, in downtown New Ulm, Minnesota. ”Impressive” is built on a custom Art Morrison chassis equipped with 14inch Wilwood disc brakes at all four corners. Evod Industries in California machined a one-off set of wheels mounted on Pirelli tires. The red leather and carpet is from M&M Hot Rod Interiors. Show Cars Automotive, built the engine, which started as an iron block 409 (bored and stroked to 509 cubic inches), topped by a Hilborn EFI system, and paired to a 4L80E automatic transmission.
Bob Matranga - Newport Coast, California - 1955 Chevy “Brute Force” - The premise behind building “Brute Force” was, “What a 1955 Chevrolet would look like if it were built to today’s standards of a modern supercar?” The car was built in the owner’s shop. The entire front end is hand fabricated with perfect fit and finish. The chassis for Brute Force is a Morrison Tri-Five chassis with IRS (independent rear suspension) triangulated rear control arms. A 540 cubic inch Merlin V-8 with Arias heads delivers 800 horsepower.

Jerry Logan - Toledo, Washington - 1934 Ford Pickup “Staxx” - The owner/designer of this project says it began in 1972. Richardson Custom Auto & Body laid down the color while Mike Curtis Design created the one-off wheels from aluminum billet. Ron Mangus did the upholstery using Stingray, the first time ever used in an automobile. Power is supplied by a highly detailed 312-inch Ford Y-block engine topped with a Magna dual-scroll supercharger fed by a modified Borla fuel-injection system.
Tim Wheeler - Muskogee, Oklahoma - 1969 Chevy Camaro Candy Apple Red Axalta paint catches your attention on this Camaro built by Steve Crook Creations. The interior boasts Vintage Air, Dakota Digital and stitching by Gabe Lopez. Don Hardy built the LS3 – 418 inch engine which registers 650 hp on the dyno. Advanced Plating of Nashville provided the shiny stuff! Brakes and Suspension are by Baer Brakes and Detroit Speed.
George Conrad - Huron, Ohio - 1966 Ford F-100 Truck - An Art Morrison chassis is the foundation of this build and power comes from a Whipple blow n 5.0 Coyote serving the automatic transmission, a Ford 6R80 6-speed. Borla supplied fully polished stainless steel exhaust and instrumentation is from Classic Instruments of Boyne City, MI. Custom aluminum parts include Budnik billet aluminum wheels and billet aluminum steering wheel while leather upholstery is featured throughout the truck.
Jerry Hess - Woodland, California - 1956 Olds 98 Convertible “Oldssled” The owner said the idea was to build an old school 1950’s style custom with modern technology. Check out the Corvette grille, the Classic Instruments custom designed dash panel, the frenched-in Continental kit, and even Packard inspired tail lights. This seven year project was built by Mike Fillon of Prodesign Hot Rods. Power comes from a fuel-injected first-generation Chrysler Hemi. Advanced Plating, House of Kolor Paints and Bill’s Auto Upholstery were all critical to the build.
Frank Hinman - Genoa, Wisconsin - 1955 Cadillac Coupe Deville “Sandman” - One of the first things you notice on “Sandman” is the suicide rear doors! Iconic Metal Works’ Kory Gray in Nashville is the fabricator and Bakersfield, California’s Kal Koncepts’ Dion Giuliano gets the credit for body and custom paint work. The leather interior was done by Mike Wray at Cayucos Auto Interiors in California. Vintage Air keeps things cool inside while a duel-fueled 598 cubic inch Chevy big-block blown with a Procharger heats things up under the hood.

Greg and Gail Wilson - Louisville, Kentucky - 1929 Ford Model A Truck “Driftwood” - Hercules Motor Car Inc. of Tampa, Florida built the body while Mike Sullivan of Louisville turned the hardwoods into fine cabinetry. The Ford Flathead V-8 engine was built by Miles Machine of Louisville with pieces from Pete and Jake’s Hot Rod Parts of Peculiar, Missouri and Hot Rod Carbs. DOVER DRAG STRIP NOSTALGIA DRAGS Photos and words by John McCartney When it comes to Nostalgia events on the East coast there are many to pick from and attend. However there is one that has lasted and continues to grow each and every year. The Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags which is powered by JK Motorsports is celebrating ten great years at its home in West Lebanon, New York at Lebanon Valley Dragway. However the event has been around for 12 years of cool nostalgia action. Dino Lawrence works very hard each and every year to put on one of the best nostalgia events. Lawerence gathers all sorts of cool cars, racers and fans from all over the East coast and brings them together to spend three days of fun and racing. Perhaps the thought of three days of fun, racing and car show came from another event Woodstock that was held very close by in Woodstock, New York. No matter what you are into you can find it on display at the event whether in the car show area, racer’s pit area, staging lanes or on the famed Lebanon Valley Dragway drag strip. Everywhere that you look there is something cool and classic just waiting to be checked out and explored. The racing gets underway bright and early on the drag strip has record turnout to all sorts of classic cars do battle in various Dover eliminators classes. North East Timing Organization (NETO) had two classes in the form of NETO Comp and NETO Nostalgia. But there is much more to be seen and heard as the show cars took to the track twice a day to lay down super smokey burnout, wild wheel stands and sometimes fill the air with that sweet smell of nitro. There was the Mohegan Sun Funny Car Shootout which had a great selection of car doing battle. The East Coast

Fuelers had a number of front engined dragster waging war on the quarter mile as well. The Supercharged AA/Gassers of America were on hand with a number of vintage gassers complete with back up girls, wild side by side burnouts, a super racing action. The very extreme altered from the Hot Rods from Hell lined up for an outstanding quarter mile slugfest. When fans had to make the tough choice to turn away from the racing action on the track there was so much to check out. A giant Time Tunnel Rod & Custom car show which was packed from one end to another with hundreds and hundreds of classic cars on display all looking to take home a special Top 40 favorite awards and special 4 foot Best of show trophy and a chance to make a parade down the return in front of the grandstands. If you needed to check out some of the vintage race cars that raced back in the day at Dover Drag Strip then Drag Alley sponsored by S&W Race Cars was just the place for you. For here in Drag Alley Nostalgia Race Car display sponsored by S&W Race Cars there were many Dover Drag Strip Originals. If you find yourself looking to pick up some special part or cool item for your home or ride you were in luck. During the run of the event there was a huge flea market with all sorts of cool vintage items just waiting to be purchased and taken home. Over in the Drag Strips Gone. Com you could pick up an event t-shirt of other cool posters, stickers, or cool items. Glory Days Fiberglass, Don’s Speed Shop, Hillary Hot Rods, Racing Junk. Com could be found on hand as well with cool products. There were many other vendors along the midway with many other great collectibles on sale just waiting to be picked up. With the 12th Annual Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags powered by JK Motorsports in the books you can count on lucky 13 the 2021 edition of the Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags powered by JK Motorsports to be back bigger and better once again taking over the Lebanon Valley Dragway in West Lebanon, New York for three days. Three days of great nostalgia action both on and off the track for all to enjoy and take part in action. he AACA Northern Ohio Chapter, along with the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, hosted a gathering of Cleveland and Northern Ohio-made automobiles in 2015. At the turn of the 20th century, there were over 80 automobile manufacturers in the city of Cleveland alone. In Northern Ohio, there were over 115 manufacturers including: Winton, Stearns, StearnsKnight, Owen Magnetic, White, Peerless, Royal Tourist, Cleveland, Chandler, Jordan, Templar, Packard, Studebaker-Garford, Baker, Rauch & Lang, and many others. This cruise was a first-ever celebration of Northern Ohio-made cars. T
he Fourth of July has been a great day for car cruises in recent years. While all of the patriotic reasons area an incentive to schedule a show, the recent Covid-19 have been a constant deterrent and has caused numerous events to be cancelled or, at least, postponed. The city of Westlake decided to move forward with their 31st Annual Charity Classic Car Show at Clague Park. It was a hot and sunny day as vehicles arrived. There was judging and trophies for entries 1900-1980. Dash plaques were handed out to the first 150 arrivals. A huge grassy spaced the vehicles with plenty of room to roam around and view. Music, a Martial Arts Demonstration, picnic areas, family activities and games were also offered for those in attendance. The charities sharing proceeds included the St Baldrick’s Foundation for Pediatric Care and the Westlake Community Center. Keep this show in mind for your 2020 schedule of cruising!
