turned 49. Determined not to let a childhood dream escape him, he made the decision to begin a ’32 Ford coupe build! Ron was introduced to cars at a young age as his grandfather raced stock cars and, along with Ron’s dad, was always in the garage. Ron headed out to Outlaw Performance in Avenmore, PA and liked what he saw. A chassis and body were delivered in short order. Ron’s uncle also purchased a Deuce body and they began their builds together in the Learn garage. Yep, space soon was in short supply and the two projects had to continue in different garages.

The Outlaw Performance chassis was fitted with a Pete & Jakes front suspension and shocks. Wilwood provided the front discs and rear drum stopping power. A Borgeson/Vega steering box manages the turns for this ’32. Out back, a 4 bar triangulated with coil overs stabilizes a Ford 9” rear axle holding a Currie-Moser center section with 3.90 gearing. Weld Racing wheels, 15x5 in front and 15x12 in the rear, were mounted with Mickey Thompson rubber 15x6 steering and 15x16x31 providing the traction. Pair of Holley 390 cfm carbs supply the fuel through a Weiand Tunnel Ram to the 1970 Chevy 383 stroker motor. Transfer Machine went to work on a virgin 4 bolt main block going .30 over along with performing the line boring and decking tasks. A Callie crankshaft and rods, Comp Cams Big Mother Thumper and Moroso 7qt oil pan were installed before the engine was sent off to Ron. MSD Ignition fires through Taylor plug wires. Hamburger fabricated valve covers and a Vintage Shotgun air scoop add some engine bay glitter. Sanderson headers, Flowmaster 40s and a full stainless 2.5” tubing exhaust create a nice rumble you can hear coming around the corner. A Tremec TKO-600 5 speed tranny and driveshaft from Rowe’s Auto Service send the power out back. Finally, a Powermaster starter and a 100 amp alternator were added along with a Griffin radiator and Wix oil filter so Ron’s dream ride could hustle down the highway.

The chassis had all welds filled prior to paint. A few small defects in the body were corrected as well. The goal was to have a very clean build when it finally would hit the road. The fiberglass body has a 3’ chop for that sleek vintage appearance. Ron’s friend Kurt, from First Place Fab, laid down the Rally Yellow PPG base coatclear coat finish. The Ultra Leather tuck and roll interior with hidden stitching was created at home by Ron and Nancy. It helped that Nancy was a seamstress. Well, that was a hidden advantage for sure! The mandatory interior credits go out to Wise Guy seats, Outlaw steering wheel and shifter, Auto Meter gauges and tach, Lokar pedals, Bullring door pulls, Summit 32’ tilt steering column, So-Cal dash panel and Art Deco knobs. Believe me; the finished product is absolutely stunning. As with most home builds, “The Crew” (Bob, Ron Sr., Wibb & Kurt) spent some long nights fitting, modifying and discussing all of the aspects of this project. Ron said special a thanks go out to Kurt for the guidance and late phone calls and most of all to Nancy, his wife, for allowing a dream to come true. Yes, good things do happen! It wasn’t an easy project as numerous parts had to be modified or completely hand fabricated. Ron’s experience as a Die Technician helped him see the light at the end of the tunnel when progress seemed to stall. Although the build took about six years, the reward of sitting in a completed interior and firing the power plant for the first “real” time was a memorable event for sure. Ron said finishing the Deuce and realizing he had built and turned every bolt was a totally rewarding experience and he would do nothing different at all. Ron, Nancy and their Yellow Deuce Coupe have picked up numerous awards at cruises and car shows. He is especially proud of receiving the Bob Lorei Family Choice Award at the 8th Annual Bonnell’s Rod Shop CruiseIn last year. Every time I see Ron’s hot rod “showing off” at a cruise, I have to ask myself, and any other procrastinator out there, what’s holding you back! Get crackin’ on that build you have been putting off! A
rgus Park would be almost hidden from public view if it was not for the sign near the road. You have to take a short drive back into the woods to find the huge pavilion and well-manicured grounds where the vehicles were staged. A 50/50 raffle was being offered along with numerous Chinese Auction items. That familiar aroma of food being grilled was welcome attraction to anyone who was even a bit hungry. I have to mention that a line was formed near the grille every time I looked that way. The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 out of Youngstown was set up with a patriotic display and accepting donations for vets in need.

If you enjoy a relaxed cruise with a lot of open space and away from the blacktop heat, this show would work well for you. There was no shortage for parking and I will offer a conservative guess that the car count was over 100. Many of which I have seen before but also quite a few new ones to look over. I
t seemed very fitting while driving up to Island Dragway in Great Meadows, New Jersey to attend the Funny Car Throw Down show, a local radio station was playing a show called Time Warp. On this week’s show they were time warping back to 1972 which was idea because that was one of the years that was hey day of funny cars and their match racing. For you see the funny car match race at Island Dragway features that feel and approach of the classic funny car days. Funny cars from all over the Northeast put together in part by Chris Massarella who works hard at getting all the racers together for a fun day at the track. Two great rounds of funny car action kept all the fans entertained with side by side action complete with long smokey burnouts, back up girls and fast quick times. This event is run as an open style laid back day where racers come together to have fun time. While having fun is a great thing taking home bargain rights in several classes and some money is important as well. The fastest time slip went to Joe Morrison who took a week off from his Top Fuel driving duties along the NHRA Camping World drag racing series and jumped behind the wheel of Rocky Pirrone’s funny car. Morrison took home the low et with a great run of 6.40 for his efforts he took home a 100 dollars put up by Steve Bell

of Bell Signs. Marisa Hornberger who served as the back up girl for the Time Bomb Vega funny car collected 100 dollars which was put up by Ricks Auto Recovery for the best back up girl. The family owned Generation X Vega funny car driven by Matt Stambaugh took home the big cash prize for the best burn out in the amount of 350 Dollars which was put up by Ricks Auto Recovery, Steve Musser, and Dave DeAngelis. Stambaugh was the hands down winner with a long smokey cockpit filled smoke filled driving the Vega funny car. Rob Bundy returned to the funny car match racing wars after taking a few years off and on this day was presented with the Rocky Roxlau Determination Award. A great selection of nitro and ally burning fuel coupes came out on this day. When the funny cars were not running fans could check out a great car show along with racing in several other racing classes. NETO the North East Timing Organization held a double header weekend with racing action on both Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday part of their weekend featured a
special Wally Race and the winner of the Wally was Brian English who took the win in the Comp class first over Jim Mullen. For the Wally trophy English took on Steve Consentino who had won the Nostalgia class, and English was the big winner. Consentino was the winner in the his class over Frank Paradiso. On Sunday the Comp class Jerry Deslandes took the win over Brian English who made it once again to the final. In the running of the Nostalgia class Al Zimbaldi got the victory over Steve Consentino. This year’s running of the Island Dragway Funny Car Throw Down was another one for the record books. It is so great to see all of the classic funny car racers come out to support the history of Island Dragway and put on a super show. With the success of each and every show plans are already in the works for another great show for the fans coming up for 2022. Fans should make plans to come out and check out this old time funny car style race you will surely make a trip in the Time Warp back to the good ole days of fun. ~ John

Michael’s 1940 Ford Deluxe Chardon, Ohio. Here is my custom built 1940 Ford Deluxe with a SVT cobra drivetrain. The interior seats, instrument cluster were custom interior by Bobby Griffin. It has a all original body and a custom build frame to fit the body and a custom drivetrain. It has a supercharged automatic transmission, and heights front and four wheel disc brakes.
Bob’s 1956 Chevy Gasser Youngstown, Ohio. This is my 56 Chevy Gasser that ended up being a 6 1/2 year love affair! It is fitted with a Blown 671 427C.I. with 780 carbs backed by a Muncie 4 speed and Ford 9” with 430 gears. Other mods include tilt steel frontend. With help from my son and several friends including Guy Shively who did the artwork we were able to complete this at home.
