his event continues to be one of those “Can’t Miss” shows. East Main Street, SR 59, is sometimes referred to as Ravenna’s most exciting quarter-mile. It definitely wears that nickname very well. The event is scheduled to run from 5 to 9 but cruisers have already been seeking out their preferred parking spaces for several hours if you show up “on time!” It doesn’t matter whether you approach the cruise from the West at the bottom of the hill near the A&W Root Beer or if you pull in at the top of the hill by between Mongoose Motorsports, Portage Trim and the Pizza Hut. There appears to be a block party going on and it is quite the spectacle! Vehicles are parked on both sides of the street and numerous businesses along Main Street allocate a portion of their parking lots for the cruisers as well. The car count has been estimated at 1500 and higher along with a spectator count between 5000 and 10000. Yep, it’s really that big of a deal for the gearhead community. The sheer size of the event indicates you will see multiple vehicles you have never seen before. Shiny paint, chrome and horsepower are everywhere! Remember, this is a rain or shine show. So, don’t let that issue hold you back from attending. This is a perfect place for checking out some of the amazing vehicles, catching up with old friends and making a few new ones. Car clubs and smaller groups often arrive together and are able to park in the same areas.

There are many restaurants along Main Street and they do a great job of providing food and beverage to the crowd. You will likely find a large display of semi-trucks, a few tractors and farm equipment. Hot rods, muscle cars both vintage and new, Corvettes, antiques and restorations are just parked there for you to check out. Around 7 P.M. the cruisers rev up their engines for the “Ravenna Rumble” which has become a tradition that seems to delight nearly everyone. This event has regularly been voted Crusin’ Times #1 Downtown Event of 500+ cars more than once. They take that distinction seriously with an active campaign taking place during the event each year. I’m not suggesting you get there when the sun rises, but you might want to exercise good judgement if you want a premier parking spot! It might be a good idea to begin making plans to be there or be square. That’s all I have - Joe

he famous historic town of Wildwood, New Jersey sits nicely along the jersey shore just a stones throw away from Atlantic City and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. During any given year the town of Wildwood plays host to all sorts of folks who just want to spend time on the beach and the boardwalk. Well, that all changes for one week when The Race of Gentlemen comes to town. What is The Race of Gentlemen surely you have heard and read about this yearly get together of the hot rod car culture. If you have not then let’s fill you in with a quick history on the event and the men who put this all together. Well, it all started a number of years ago from the creative mind of Mel “Van Riper” Stultz, you see Mel had this idea. A idea of getting a number of pre war hot rods and motorcycles all together in one place to race on the beach. Once the first event took place the word spread like wide fire and folks started to build and restore all of the hot rods and motorcycles to take part each and every year. All of these racers looked forward to being able to race on the beach right near and sometimes it seems in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s this unique backdrop seems to attract racing fans as well as the events that are always

packed for this event. There is something that can be said and for sure has to be experienced watching cars and motorcycles racing on the beaches doing battle against each other along with the elements. Racers have to figure out the sand of the beach along with getting all their runs and races in before the tides comes in. The racing starts when the tide is low and must get done before the high tide comes back in and takes back the beaches. This year’s event got started early in the week as racers and fans started to come into town. There is a great swap meet held in the parking lot which also serves as the pit area for all the racers right across from the host motel, the Blue Palms. As the pit area fills up very fast so do all sorts of cool hot rods and motorcycles start to fill the streets of Wildwood, New Jersey. There is something that can be said for seeing the great blend of cars, bikes and the unique backdrop of vintage hotels and buildings which is know as Wildwood. When dawn breaks on Friday morning the flood gates of cool stuff are swung wide open and the streets and parking lots are filled to the brim with so

many great cars, bikes and people all coming together to have a fun time in the sun. When the sun sets there is another get together know as the Night of The Troglodytes. This event takes place at the Binns Motel and features great music, and a super selection of vintage choppers and classic vans. A great way to end the start of The Race of Gentlemen and get everyone ready for the racing action that will take place on the beach the following day. Bright and early on Saturday morning racers and fans make their way onto the beach of Wildwood just near all the famous rides and attractions on the boardwalk. The pit area by the ocean is fills up fast and cars and motorcycles get ready to take their place in line waiting to race down the beach in front of the fans who line the beach to check out all the action. As along as the tides hold out and the ocean allows the beach to be used as a race track, the racing takes place. However if folks feel the need to take a break from all the racing there is a great car show on the beach for them to check out. Customs By The Sea continues to showcase a great selection of all types of hot rods, customs and great rides. There is a good selection of food and drink to keep everyone fueled up as well. Each and every year Mel and his staff come up with a great one of kind 20 Cruisin’ Times ~ August 2022

of souvenirs. The line for these one of a kind items seems to go on forever but is well worth the wait. In addition to all the great racing action, car shows, food, drink there is so much to check out and enjoy. Each and ever race is flag started just like back in the day by a great selection of lovely young ladies who never seem to tire out from jumping high in the air and waving the flag. All of the starting line officials are all dressed in period correct uniforms as is most of the drivers, and all of their crew members. Saturday night comes to an end with a giant bon fire and another great music sets by more cool bands. The Race of Gentlemen comes to an end on Sunday when the racing is completed with winners be awarded in various classes. If you’ve never attended The Race of Gentlemen, you need to come by and check it out. It’s always a one of a kind get together that takes place in a very special place.
