Relay For Life Car Cruise

The first US president to ever ride in an automobile was President William McKinley. The Ohioan’s venture took place in 1899 when he participated in a demonstration by Freelan Stanley showcasing a steam-powered automobile. During that era the prevalence of motorized vehicles as a conventional means of transportation was far from certain, and McKinley had no way of knowing the ride would secure his legacy as the first motorized president. His second and final ride was on September 6, 1901. While visiting the World’s Fair in Buffalo, New York, McKinley was shot. He was swiftly transported to a nearby infirmary, this time in an electric-powered ambulance. McKinley died 8 days later.

Motorization continued to advance and the gasoline-powered engine was introduced as an option. During the late 19th to early 20th centuries, there was ongoing debate regarding the most effective means of powering the advancing modes of transportation. Several factors influenced the decision to prioritize gasoline over steam and electricity as the primary fuel for early automobile manufacturers. A steam car took half of an hour to warm up before driving. Battery technology at that time had a notably lower energy density compared to gasoline. Additionally, as the Model T entered mass production, gasoline engines proved simpler to manufacture compared to electric drivetrains, aligning with Ford’s pragmatic business strategy.

Jerry Dixie’s Road Tourians: On the Road Again

The Quaker Steak & Lube chain welcomes gearheads on cruise nights at most franchises throughout the country, including, I believe, the Austintown restaurant. The Austintown location appears to have a higher level of participation than most, partly due to its proximity to I-80, I-76, and OH-11, all within three miles. Additionally, their Sunday evening time slot works favorably as many cruisers stop by on their way home from other earlier events. I believe I have attended more cruises at this location than any other. To be honest, I must admit that I live less than four miles from the Austintown QS&L!

The weather this Sunday was nearly perfect, and the local Mustang Club organized an outing there, promising a great evening. Earlier in the week, I was informed that the Jerry Dixie Road Tourians would be stopping in the area during their trip from Goodguy’s Columbus event to Syracuse, NY for the Nationals. I was aware of Jerry’s connection to Youngstown and his local shop, Ohio Truck & Van. However, I had no prior knowledge of the Road Tourians group and their travels.

Jerry served as the Road Tour Director for Street Rodder Magazine for 25 years, from 1996 until 2020. He attended every NSRA event in the United States from 1996 to 2005, driving a different street rod each year. In 2006, it was decided to invite readers to join the week-long road tours in their own cars. Jerry organized eight tours each summer and traveled with couples who signed up for the week.

While that must have been a dream job, it ended with the 2019 season when Street Rodder Magazine ceased publication. Then Covid hit and disrupted everything for a year. The following year, previous tour participants reached out to Jerry, expressing their longing for the road tours and the friends they had made along the way.

Jerry Dixie’s Road Tourians

Jerry and his wife, Mary Ann, considered the situation and decided to revive the Road Tours concept. The tours became “all-inclusive,” covering hotel accommodations, admission to museums and collections they visited, some meals, special parking, and admission to the rod-runs they attended. They limited the number of cars to 25-30, ensuring the group remained small enough to manage. The response was overwhelmingly positive.

As I learned more about the Road Tourians, I became increasingly intrigued by their operations. This was their second tour of the 2022 season. They departed Columbus on Sunday after the Goodguy’s Columbus show and drove through Amish country on their way to Youngstown. Jerry would be back in his hometown, traveling with a group of friends in their vehicles.

The Road Tourians were the featured guests at the weekly Sunday night cruise at Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown. DJ “Big Rick” and crew helped reserve spaces for their anticipated arrival. The “tour” descended the hill shortly before 5 PM. Rick Guerra and Greg Rhoton were there capturing video footage and conducting interviews for the Armstrong Street Scene cable network. As for me, I was present, doing what I usually do when I have great rides in front of my camera. I was content with that! It was an excellent evening, and it was interesting to see the Road Tourians’ license plates from Tennessee, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and other states.

I caught up with the group again on Monday when they stopped for lunch at Firestone Farms in North Lima. Before their lunch break, the group had already visited a private car collection in the morning and was headed to the Snyder Collection afterward.

Jerry Dixie’s Road Tourians

On Monday evening, there was a picnic at Jerry’s place, with food provided by the Mark Cole Agency of Youngstown. Local hot rodders know Mark from his regular attendance at cruises. Mark is a car enthusiast and writes specialty vehicle insurance policies through American National.

On Tuesday, I lost contact with the group as they headed north and later stopped to visit the Lucy and Desi Museum in Jamestown, New York, Lucy’s hometown. In the afternoon, they arrived in Niagara Falls, where they enjoyed a ride on the famous Maid of the Mist.

Wednesday’s route took them along the northern coast of New York, offering magnificent views of Lake Ontario. Later that day, they arrived in Syracuse and began preparing for the Nationals activities. The participants’ kickoff party at Lake Oneida was scheduled for Thursday. I have not attended the Syracuse show, but it must have been cars, cars, cars, and more cars (probably a couple of trucks too – LOL!) until the event’s conclusion. The Tourians had special parking and a hospitality tent serving as their headquarters to enjoy the Syracuse Nationals, which filled the New York State Fairgrounds.

In any case, I found this entire experience to be quite cool. It is definitely something I would be interested in if I had a vehicle that fit the bill! Relay for Life Car Cruise

The American Cancer Society teamed up with Michael Adamski, the founder of the Mahoning Valley Car Cruises Facebook page, to host a big car show at their annual Relay for Life event on Saturday, June 17, at the Southern Park Mall Debartolo Commons from 4-8 PM. Registration was set to begin at 2 PM, but the gearheads were pulling in at noon, eager to pick out their favorite spaces. The first 100 registered participants received a dash plaque. The event also offered the usual door prizes, 50/50 raffle, awards, and basket raffles. All proceeds were to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The Debartolo Commons location hosts The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club’s weekly cruise every Tuesday night with DJ Thomas John. It is the perfect location for car shows as the mall offers spacious parking and great food options at Double Boogies and Steel Valley Brew Works. Additionally, the mall entrance is nearby for those who might want to walk in and shop at all the amazing stores. Southern Park Mall is the premier shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in the Boardman area. Several food trucks were also on hand to satisfy the thirst and hunger cravings of the cruising crowd. An estimated 150 vehicles attended this event.

A bounce house was popular with the younger crowd, and a few from the older crowd decided to take on the challenge too. It was a great evening for cruising!

1966 Chevy Chevelle. This car was an ebay find. Alot of work went into the 427 Big block engine, Interior and paint to make it presentable for driving. Added some 17” American Racing polished aluminum wheels and tires to make her pop. Smooth running, nice rumble draws attention everywhere she goes.

Sandi’s 1960 F100 Avon Lake, OH.

In 2021 I saw the truck I’ve always wanted on a online auction. It was in Dallas TX where she had spent her entire life. I purchased and shipped her here and she went under an 18-month restoration where I replaced almost everything mechanical about her. Her drive train was in good shape so her 223 straight six was completely rebuilt along with most everything else under the hood. The interior and window glass were replaced and I repainted the cab, bumpers and had a custom bedliner sprayed on. I did not change the color of the truck. I had a Dakota dash installed along with dash bezel and air cleaner dipped in 2nd. amendment art, custom lettering, and much more!

The coolest thing about her is when investigating her VIN I discovered that we were born on the exact same day. Her name is Glory, but I call her Betz. I am looking forward to driving her this summer and entering her in some car shows for the very first time. It is such a pleasure to go out in the morning for a cup of coffee and a drive to the farm market. She is quite the celebrity when we are out. I enjoy the three on the tree and just the way she drives and the way she smells. She is my Glory. My father worked for Ford for 43 years. I think the saddest thing about my truck is my dad lost his life in an automobile accident the week I bought her and he never got to see her or ride in her. But I feel when I take her out somehow he’s always in there with me riding along and smiling. God bless America and God bless American trucks.

This is our 1955 Chevy Bel Air. We purchased the car in 2011 from a gentleman whose grandfather bought it new in 1955! It’s all original, straight six, two-speed power glide. We won’t win any races, but have fun driving it!
