The 426 Hemi

Introduced by Chrysler in the 1960s, the 426 Hemi engine is one of the most iconic and revered powerplants in automotive history. Also known as the “Elephant Engine” due to its size and power, the 426 Hemi V8 is perhaps the most legendary engine Mopar ever produced.

The name “Hemi” is derived from the hemispherical design of the engine’s combustion chambers. This shape allows for an efficient, centralized location of the spark plug, as well as improved airflow within the chamber, which, when combined with large valves, results in immense power output. This unique feature was not only a hallmark of the engine’s design but also became a key marketing term for Chrysler, helping to brand the 426 Hemi and other Hemi engines as superior performance options in the public’s eye.

Built at a time when the roar of a V8 was the ultimate expression of automotive freedom, the 426 Hemi became synonymous with the muscle car era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, powering iconic vehicles such as the Dodge Charger, Plymouth Barracuda, and the Plymouth Road Runner. These engines, off the showroom floor, produced a whopping 425 horsepower! With simple after-market modifications, they could produce over 500 horses.

Hemi-powered Dodge and Plymouth cars for the model years of 1966 through 1971 have become collector’s items. In 2014, a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible equipped with the 426 Hemi engine sold at auction for $3.5 million. Not a bad return considering the sticker price for the car was $4,371.

When July rolls around in Ohio, hot rodders from all genres take a trip to Columbus for the Goodguys show. Last July, the Goodguys crew pulled into the Ohio Expo Center to set up for “The Big One!” The 25th edition of the Summit Racing Nationals, presented by PPG, brought six thousand vehicles and thousands of spectators through the gates. This is a weekend everyone looks forward to.

A few groups had organized to cruise together from the previous Goodguys event in Des Moines, IA. One of those groups, Jerry Dixie’s Road Tourians, followed the Columbus event with additional travel up to the Syracuse Nationals. Their journey included a couple of stops in the Youngstown area.

Thursday evening’s activities featured a Kickoff Party for early arrivals at the Crowne Plaza parking lot. Then, on Friday morning, rods, customs, street machines, muscle cars, trucks, classics, and just plain exciting vintage rides rolled into the massive facility.

On Saturday, several dozen vehicles lined up to compete for the Top 12 Awards of Goodguys’ biggest prizes in both the Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year and PPG Street Machine of the Year categories. These two coveted Top 12 Awards always attract the nation’s most elite builders and shops and the coolest new rides. Both categories were competitive, with more than twenty street machines and more than a dozen street rods vying for the honors.

During a special Saturday evening awards ceremony, Jon Hall’s ‘27 T roadster, built by Greening Auto Company, was crowned the Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year, while Danny Shaffer’s ‘67 Mustang, built by Ironworks Speed & Custom, took home the PPG Street Machine of the Year title.

The weekend’s events included the unveiling of the 2023/2024 Goodguys Grand Prize Giveaway ‘32 Ford coupe, completed at Streamline Custom Designs. Great activities took place in every corner of the enormous Expo Center property. The Top 12 Awards, the Goodguys CPP Autocross Series, a Burnout Competition, and ground-shaking Nitro Thunderfest exhibitions attracted the attention of both cruisers and spectators alike. The Kasich Building housed a spectacular indoor display of past Top 12 winners that helped establish Goodguys’ 40-year history. A wide selection of vendors, utilizing both inside and outside locations, showcased new and established product lines.

Each day included a full schedule of fun happenings. Two sets of The Builder’s Choice Top 10 awards, the Pro Street Roll Out, and a large swap meet anchored separate locations on the vast grounds all weekend. These were some of the coolest cars and trucks with

many of the best builders and enthusiasts in the hobby. A rain shower briefly interrupted the events around mid-day on Saturday. Everyone seemed to head for cover and check out the indoor vehicles and vendors, like having an intermission!

If you became tired from walking around, it was easy to grab a beverage and/or a bite to eat. You could sit on one of the benches or curbs and take a break. The best part was the steady stream of great rides driving by for you to check out, offering a sort of reverse drive-thru service. Great stuff! This has always been one of my favorite features of the huge shows.

This was a very busy weekend, jam-packed with great activities. Goodguys Columbus is called The Big One for a reason, as the overall size, scope, and stature of this event make it one of the largest hot rod parties anywhere. If you have never been, this is an event you should put on your schedule for 2024!

PISTON POWER SHOW

The annual Piston Powered Auto-Rama will be returning this year on April 5, 6 & 7. As you might know, it is the largest indoor showcase of custom cars, trucks, antique construction equipment, motorcycles, tractors, planes, military equipment and more of its kind in the world! Vehicles of many descriptions from all around the country and Canada will be competing for awards in a host of classes. Show cars from the ISCA circuit, Ridler Award winners, and other builders like Pro Comp Customs bring their works of art for all to enjoy. The I-X Center will be loaded with hundreds of other immaculate builds as well that you wont want to miss out on!

The Slick Devils Car Club is going back to its roots and “It’s – It’s the Ballroom Blitz” as the I-X Center Ballroom opens its doors again for the 2024 show. The Hot Rod Asylum will feature vehicles OLDER THAN 1949 including cars and trucks that have a nostalgic appearance. Post-war vehicles that are custom sleds or gasser inspired will also be featured.

The John Shapiro Cruisin’ Times All Stars will also be on display next to the Cruisin Times Magazine booth. In early years, John would go to hundreds of cars shows and cruise-ins every year looking for fresh or unique builds to feature in the magazine. Eventually he invited the owners to show off their cars alongside the booth at the massive indoor show called the Cleveland Autorama.

Just like in the magazine, CTM always attemped to have a nice blend of vehicles from all walks of life: Antiques, Customs, Muscle Cars, Antiques, Land Speed Record Holders, Funny Cars, Roadsters, Wheel Standers, and even as far as a Jet Powered Amish Buggy!

Artists will be showing off their skills and artwork at the Krazy Paint booth to raise money for the Career and Technical School Foundation. The money helps kids attending local trade and vocational schools, giving them a jump start on their careers. And, collectors will be going home with some absolutely amazing art.

Event sponsor, Summit Racing Equipment always has a display comprised of a variety of vehicles that exemplified the wide range of products they provide to their customers. There is also a swap meet, and a variety of displays at the event including motorcycles, military vehicles, and even a model car contest!

I could go on and on and maybe end up with a far too long story, but the show photos will have to serve that purpose for now. It’s certainly not too early to begin making plans to attend the 2024 Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama!
