Randomly Speaking Performance Pay...

W

hile I was watching some racing I thought of what could be the solution professional athletic sports - It lies in Performance.

Let me explain, to increase performance in a race car, assuming you’ve got the expertise, all it takes is money. Call any engine builder and the first words out of their mouth will be, “How much you are willing to spend?” It always depends on how fast you’re wanna go. They plug in the required cubic inches vs cubic dollars formula and sure enough, whatever you spend will (almost guarantee) to make you go faster. But not so much with human beings...

Sports team owners have been paying big dollars in order to lure the best athletes for years, but it seems like these highly paid players haven’t been performing in relation to the amount of money they’re making.

Round by round I watched the cars, some who increased sponsorship from the year before, now had the money to increase horsepower and went faster. But some, even though they had bigger bucks, were beaten in an elimination round, which in turn told they weren’t getting any part of the purse money and probably weren’t going to get

their sponsorship contract renewed the following year. Such is the life of a drag racer. It all boils down to, “You’re only as good as your last round.”

Ive also talked with some of the teams who told me about sponsor deals that require “X” number of first round, semi and final round appearances, TV interviews, newspaper and magazine coverage articles. Sponsors are now demanding more “bang for their buck” when it comes to sponsoring race cars.

Human being performance is a different story. You can only increase speed and agility by so much, no matter how much money and steroids are thrown at the player. Today’s astronomical salaries guarantee nothing but high ticket prices and foster very little in the performance end of things.

Sports should start paying for performance. Let’s say an owner gives a running back a base salary of $200,000 (my god, who could live on anything less?). Then pay him per rushing yard, say $1,000 p/yd.

If a running back gets 50 yards he’s gonna get $50,000 at the end of the day. Multiply that by 10 games and he’s brought himself to a very respectful Continued on next page...

Imagine a similar formula for a quarterback.

Bonus money could be paid for completions, come-from-behind-wins and even “on the nickel throws”.

I smile when I think of a quarterback getting paid for a ball thrown directly into the hands of a tight end, but a dropped ball would only penalize the receiver. Overall team efforts, it would seem, might rise when the absence of money looms large.

Lineman would get money for the number of sacks and would get penalized for the number of missed tackles. Even coaches would be paid the same way.

The drag racers anthem would be forever burned into the side of their helmet, “You’re only as good as your last game!”. I think professional sports should seriously consider my new performance method.

Remember the root word in performance is what’s missing in professional sports - PERFORM. ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

EI (Design Engineering) and the City of Avon Lake got together last year for their annual Cruise-In. They upgraded from their original backyard and got a bigger, more visible downtown location at Weiss Field and like the years prior had a large collection of of hot rods, trucks, classics, and race cars. Many Team DEI Race Teams will also be there to show their cars and racing.

The next event is scheduled for June 16, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at their new location - 33401 Webber Rd. The Rain Date has been set for June 17 the next day.

There will be raffles, dash plaques, and DEI merchandise available for sale in a new and improved vendor area. Tom Miller, DEI director of marketing and sales, says, “Previous events were a phenomenal success. We are very appreciative of the support we have from the City of Avon Lake. Our goal is to build on this event every year and connect with all the enthusiasts we have in Ohio that have a passion for everything automotive.”

shland, located in North Central Ohio, was invaded by nearly 600 antique, classic, and muscle cars and Saturday’s weather was perfect for this wonderful event. One local said, “It’s nice to see so many people bring such a variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles, for everyone to enjoy with the backdrop of our historic downtown”. The event committee, is very pleased to share the news that our benefit, (Ashland County Shop-With-A-Cop), will receive $14,000 this year! Shop-With-

UMTR is divided into two classifications with Street Stick and Quick Stick divisions and then they race in a bracket format. Regionally, the UMTR is broken into the North and South groups. The members are passionate about encouraging the construction and development of new stick shift/manual transmission cars.

This was my first visit to the Dragway 42 since the concrete pour last November. The facility continues to make progress and I expect that to continue. Look for great things in 2018! The hillside seating seems to be a popular feature!

T

his month I want to introduce a different direction in covering local weekly cruises and feature smaller gatherings. These have either small parking areas or limited space avaliable to park cars! We’ve all been to them, but how many have been around more than one or two years?

One of the most notable is The Wickliffe Flower Barn on Euclid Ave. in Wickliffe.

This former Denny’s Restaurant began welcoming cruisers around seven years ago. What began as an experiment grew into a locally popular car cruise hosting as many as fifty cars and generally gathering 25 to 40 on Wednesday nights! One of the reasons for this popularity is the unusual food they fix for the cruisers and, with the help of some of the regulars bringing dishes, they have enough food and drink for all who show up!

1967 C10 Matthew North Ridgeville, OH. I bought this truck as a project to do with my dad. A build I could hold on to forever.

It started as a ‘67 c10 rolling chassis, we replaced every nut and bolt and made it new. Then we found a cab and front clip.

We fabricated a new floor, rocker panels, and cab corners. Along with some patches on the doors. Next we found us a ‘67 bed with beautiful patina to give our truck the perfect look. We wanted to build a cool old truck to use for the shop, but also to have fun in on the weekends. So we built a 409 sbc for it with a 5 speed manual trans behind it, and what a blast it is to drive!

The truck now serves as the shop truck and helps promote my business, T&A Rods. We take it to local car shows and love telling the story. I’m proud to have a truck that will remind me of my dad forever.

1962 Galaxie 500xl Aaron Hinckley, OH. I made a deal with Ruth in that we would build us a car and we would drive it to Las Vegas and get married since we both hadn’t seen much of the country. Route 66 here we come! I purchased “the box”, a ‘62 Galaxie 500xl from a friend in a what seemed like a million pieces. We had a vision of what we wanted and needed out of the car and I went to work in my home garage at night after work. I did all the fab work fitting the motor, trans and making headers. Once that was tackled I moved to body and paint. My amazing friends Mark and Matt handled the leather and wood trim on the interior. Doing everything myself except for the sewing and we feel the car exceeds all our expectations! Now after almost exactly one year we are working on putting some miles on it and working out some kinks before our cross country trip! This car will be a piece of our marriage for us to remember for ever and who knows maybe one of the kids will use it to do the same in years to come!

Getting Ready for Spring

N

ow that spring time is upon us, it’s the perfect time for that interior deep clean. There’s a myriad of dirt issues that are the result of winter time and taking care of those problems now will benefit you in many ways for years to come.

First off, if you like to take care of your interior carpets there are a few things you can do to keep them looking as clean as possible, for the longest time possible. If you have access to an air compressor, that is a plus, and/or many “wet/dry” type vacuums allow you to move the hose to have air blowing out of it, rather than sucking it up.

Step #1 is to thoroughly vacuum the entire vehicle, including the trunk area.

I personally like to do 1 quadrant at a time, however, you may have another way that you have found to be the best way for you. Doing 1 quadrant at a time lets you focus your vacuuming to where the worst areas are, while at the same time, you will want to look under the seats for any loose debris, old food wrappers and the like. You will also be able to identify “problem areas” that may have been overlooked. Once you have completed this vacuuming process, you will want to send high pressure air underneath the seats to blow out what you missed with your crevice tool. Many times there is a random French fry, coin, pebbles or a piece of paper in areas you cannot reach and this will allow you do so. Re-vacuum after this step.

Step #2 is the removal of any salt build-up that will mostly be around the gas and brake pedals. This is an area that you would have vacuumed already.

The best way to remove this salt stain is by repetitively putting hot water in these areas using a microfiber cloth and perhaps a glove to help protect your

hand from the waters temperature.

The hotter the water the better. The steam and heat from the water will help breakdown the “crustiness” of the salt build-up with as little to no chemical as possible. You will simply let the water do the work for you.

Using a microfiber cloth is a great choice because of how much water it holds. You can squeeze the cloth as needed to release water. One thing you will want to avoid is getting the carpets/fabric too wet. To avoid this, keep your “wet/dry” vacuum close by. After you have worked the area for a little while, you can suck up as much water as possible and continue this process until the salt has been removed. Using a tooth brush is another good way to work the water in while loosening the debris of which you are trying to remove. Rubbing a very well wrung out microfiber cloth or a completely dry one into the wet carpeting is another excellent way of removing bulk water.

Step #3 is to identify any stains you may have found on the carpets, fabric, seats and any leather and/or vinyl you may have and cleaning those areas too. If you end up doing a complete interior shampoo and although you did your best to remove as much water as possible, leaving the windows cracked a little on both sides will help eliminate your windows from fogging up, while the water dries. You can also run the vehicles heat on the floors as well to speed it up. Less water is better, less chemical is better.
