CRAZY Steve Mendenhall’s 1968 Camaro

Looking to create a radical show car, Steve secured the services of Bruce Harvey of Pro Comp Custom in Pittsburgh, PA for the build. The body was both sectioned and the roof chopped three inches each. The Camaro was then channeled

Gables Engine & Machine, of Akron, OH, assembled a LS 427cid which generates 600 HP. Fuel injection by Fast Fuel sits atop an Edelbrock intake and is dressed up with Pro-Form details. The exhaust is handled by Dynomax mufflers. Power drives through a 4L80e Gearstar tranny and connects out back to a Dutchman Quick Change rear gear setup. Adding in 17” and 19” Boze Alloy “Clutch” wheels and Toyo tires and this ride is barely more than waist high when standing next to it.

If you take a slow walk around Steve’s Camaro, it is difficult to believe it was once a barn find. But, that is exactly the case as he found the car nestled away in Creston, Ohio. Steve paid $4,000 for a rough, rolling shell with a pile of parts stashed on the inside.

Pro Comp Custom covered the sheet metal with BASF “Carizzma” Candy Blue paint for a stunning exterior. Hinkle added a custom interior with racing seats to go along with a full custom dash, console and roll bar. Steve’s Camaro was introduced at SEMA and has been displayed at many cars shows since then. But, this is not a trailer queen as it is often driven more than twice a week! Steve made the 125 mile trip from his home in Wadsworth, OH to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix for their annual car show and

reports the car is very comfortable to drive. He is planning on attending the Super Chevy Show in Bristol, TN later this year. Steve’s background as a mechanic has to be, at least partly, responsible for the close attention to detail in the Camaro build. He refers to this one as “My Kind Of Crazy” and that has me wondering what kind of plans he has in store for the future! ~That’s all I have - Joe

arshallville is a small village situated in NE Ohio. The 2010 Census listed the population at 756 but, I’ve been told, it is growing! Marshallville was originally founded as Bristol in 1817. Crowing roosters might be as big of a concern as barking dogs! But, do not be deterred as there is a huge park area that fills up with cruisers and gearheads every year in October. The community is extremely friendly as many residents welcome visitors’ cars onto the tree lawns along the roadway and often share their driveways and/or yards. Many residents’ lawns even displayed Halloween decorations!

additional, large open areas at the bottom of the hill that were packed for this year’s show. Back up at the show hub, bean soup is cooked over an open fire in three large cast iron kettles and stirred with a mini boat oar and bologna is fried on the grill. Get in line early and you may even garner a piece of cornbread! If you like to eat at car shows, then you need make haste for this food attraction as it seems to sell out quickly every year. Try it, you’ll like it! There were also a few food vendors’ trailers and a church serving too. Registration is set up and some best of show prizes are awarded. But, there is also a lottery prize system where awards are handed out by drawing numbers. While the registered cars may only number two or three hundred, you can rest assured that the total count has to easily be in the four-six hundred range. The Buckets ‘n Beans show maintains a laid back atmosphere. I expect this is what attracts folks back to this little village. This is a fantastic, late season show.

ne of the things I love to do on a warm summer day is to jump into the old T-Bucket and take a drive out to eastern Lake County and get my country driving cup filled with a load of long roads and small towns. My favorite stop is the DuBonne Winery! With rolling grounds and buildings surrounding the winery, you can’t help but be taken in with that pure country feeling!!! That and a couple of glasses of red, and maybe a dinner or sandwich and the day is complete!

f you have been reading my articles over the years then you’ll know that I preach elbow grease over “miracle products” that are spray on and hose off without the results to match. If you want to keep your vehicle clean all year around, both on the inside and out, you have to repetitively clean it on a regular basis and the more you clean it, the easier it will come clean. A good vacuum 1 – 2 times per month will keep your interior carpets looking brand new and fresh, years into ownership. Car mats are a good option as well. A wipe down of the dashboard, armrests, instrument panel and other interior areas will keep your leather, vinyl and cloth looking well maintained while washing your vehicle a 2 - 3 times per month will keep your paint, tires and wheels looking good too. Initially, it’s all about the prep work. If your vehicle has dull paint, you will want to rub it out and wax it to bring its color back and once that happens, continuous washing will keep it looking sharp. If your tires and wheels are dirty, a thorough cleaning will prepare them, so when you do wash your vehicle, they will come clean quicker as well. Sometimes it can be a good idea to take your vehicle

to a professional detailer to let them bring your vehicle back to showroom new, allowing you to maintain it with greater ease. If you like to wash your vehicle often, as in 3 + times per month, you will want to wax, polish or glaze the paint at least once every 6 – 8 weeks for maximum shine. There is no need to worry about the protection from the wax at that rate. Your paint will be so slick, not much will stick to it. I have had many vehicles in my day. Some I took care of better than others and all I can tell you is that a little bit of “on the regular attention” will pay dividends on multiple levels. From compliments and trophies to a better resale value, spending a little time here and there cleaning your vehicle will definitely enhance pride of ownership. Happy Detailing! David
