The

Phantom Corsair

In 1938, Rust Heinz, of the Heinz ketchup dynasty, set out to build the car of the future. He envisioned building a car that would capture the imagination of the public and push the boundaries of what was technically and stylistically possible in the late 1930s. The Phantom Corsair, featuring a streamlined, aerodynamic body with no running boards and integrated fenders, embodied his vision and provided a stark contrast to other cars of the day.

The interior of the car was just as innovative. For example, despite its sleek exterior, the Phantom Corsair was designed to comfortably seat six people, and the dashboard included a compass and altimeter.

What makes the Phantom Corsair so rare is that only one prototype was ever built. The car was intended for production, but the untimely death of Rust Heinz in 1939, coupled with the high cost of the vehicle, meant the Phantom Corsair never went into mass production. Today, the lone Phantom Corsair is a prized exhibit at the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) in

It was a bright sunny day and there was a great mix of vehicles on the grounds. The owners and spectators alike were catching up with fellow gearheads while checking out some of the builds they had not previously seen.

The Dropt N Destroyed gang always shows up with an eclectic selection of trucks and other unique rides. Dozens were sitting down on the grass as is both common and customary for these folks. The exterior finishes ranged from original and faux patina all the way out to high end custom designs. The variety is what makes photographing their events so enticing.

The venue was a bonus too. “Farmer” Bill’s Maize Valley location hosts regular Thursday evening cruises plus several special shows. Their weekly gatherings also draw an excellent variety of rides. Together with the “Dropt” folks, made for a show I was looking forward to covering.

The gentle rolling grass covered hills where everyone was parked helped with the photo backgrounds and made for a cool surface to walk on. Although I guess I do appreciate a blacktop parking lot when the weather has been rainy. You cannot have everything! There are a few large trees and several farm buildings that contribute to the photo ambiance. Really good stuff!

As the name might suggest, Maize Valley Winery & Market is a Winery, Craft Brewery, Farmers Market and Family Fun Zone where you can enjoy a quick bite or sit back for lunch or dinner. When you need a break from checking out the hot rods, you can eat inside to escape the sun or grab something from the outside grille which I understand will be expanded for 2024.

I always find something I have not seen before at this show and the variety is a bonus for sure. This is probably one of the largest weekly “cruise-ins” in the area. The fact that Bill is both a gearhead and a farmer helps make it enjoyable. He has a Model A Roadster relic that he has named “Bernice” and he raced it at the Put-In-Bay classic this past summer. There is also a 1966 Chevy resto-mod sitting in the garage. Bill is one of us for sure!

It is a perfect place to check out the cars, hang out with your buds and just have a fun time. The 2024 Meet in the Meadows season begins on May 2, 2024. Check out their FB page for details.

Sometimes the event location lends a ton of impact to a cruise or car show. Since I am about attached to my camera, the ambiance influences where I may end up heading on those perfect or near perfect summer evenings. This diner is restored to the classic style of the vintage diners that some of us remember from the 50s, 60s and perhaps even the 70s.

Rhonda’s Emerald Diner in Hubbard, Ohio is one of those locations I consider kind of special. Access is a “piece of cake” as it is situated less than a mile off I-80 at the SR 62 exit. Hubbard is about mid-point between Youngstown, OH and Sharon, PA which usually yields an excellent mix of hot rods on cruise night.

Owner Rhonda Boos said, “The diner has been here for a long time.” However, it did have a fire in 2012. It took a five-year restoration to make it what it is today. The combination RR station next door was originally built in 1887 and then torn down in 1981. The property owner

has added more vintage buildings, signs, semaphores and even an old steam locomotive, tender and caboose. All these elements provide great backgrounds for photos of your ride!

DJ Mike plays everyone’s favorite 50s and 60s music and helps with raffles and giveaways. Most nights you can order food and beverages both inside and outside. The interior décor has the traditional booth seating and a juke box to go along with an excellent menu of tasty options.

The buildings provide shade from the sun. You will usually find 25-50 cars to check out. This is a laid-back event where you can catch up with fellow gearheads, check out the railroad memorabilia and satisfy any hunger or thirst cravings you may encounter.

I purchased the Road Runner in 2000. It has an original 383 motor, bored/stroked, 4 speed transmission, restored interior and Hurst competition shifter. The paint color is Turbine Bronze.

1935 Ford 5 Window Coupe (Model 48), 2 tone blue/grey with fenders matching the interior, and rumble seat. Side engine compartment panels are included, but not shown. A Southern California hot rod up until late Spring of 2015. Vehicle is a rolling chassis minus the flathead V-8, T-5 transmission, and drive shaft, as they are in the process of being rebuilt for a new hotrod project. Built in 2010. it has a Henry Ford steel body, rust free, coming from a CA dry environment. Stock frame, with a Ford 8”/ 3.50 ratio (from a Grenada I believe), ”Posie” rear suspension (leaf springs, shocks and anti sway bar), and a Mustang II front end with chrome coils and shocks. The vehicle is setup with a TBI EFI fuel system with Mega Squirt II software on a laptop that handled 21988 Ford Escort TBI’s (a custom 2010 EFI setup) that was on the Flathead V-8 ( minimal work is needed for a newer up to date EFI setup), Southern Air AC, and a reinforced trans mount for a modern transmission (stick or automatic). Build completion was in 2010, and a CA appraisal (comes with sale) had the vehicle valued at $44,000. The vehicle just needs either a Chevy 350 or a Ford 302 V8, including a manual or automatic transmission, radiator, correct engine mounts and a driveshaft for a nice cruiser. If you want to install your own flathead, I’ll include the radiator and intake manifold with the 2 -1988 Ford Escort TBI’s that it was running with, so only a T-5 trans or a Ford C4 automatic with an adapter kit and a drive shaft is needed to be up and running. With the current stock frame, this vehicle is meant as a cruiser and NOT as a muscle machine. A muscle machine would require a new high performance frame. $31,000.00 / no trades. 216-524-2006. Ken
